Business & real estate transactions and structuring. Family and personal injury law. Wills & estates legal services.
The meaning beh b behind ind d ou o our motif: In 1996 the Squamish Nation presented Ratcliff & Company with ith a spectacut lar wood carving created by internationally renowned artist Xwa-lack-tun (Rick Harry). His three meter-wide sculpture graces our reception area. Respect for all people, regardless of race or religion is a central theme for this work of art which forms the basis for our firm’s motif, shown at top in its colours. We are honoured that Xwa-lack-tun supports our use of his sculpture as our motif.

There is a wonderful “buzz” throughout the residential and business communities of Lower Lonsdale. For years the rather run-down area of former shipbuilding sites lay vacant and decaying, with virtually no public access to the waterfront or its wonderful views. Now, revitalization of the area is well in-hand. In very recent years, many hundreds of people have moved into the new condo developments in the area. That will continue as 2 new condo towers near the foot of Lonsdale Avenue have just completed and 2 more are approved for the east end of the former waterfront shipbuilding yards. These developments have brought easy public access to a wide promenade and the 2 large public piers. Soon, “Shipbuilder’s Square” will be completed with its permanent stage for public performance, and its roof which is a piece of public art. With increased density comes greater opportunity for new businesses and greater patronage of existing businesses. The Lower Lonsdale Business Association has been proud to contribute to the expansion and vitality of both the business and residential communities, and to bring together the business community in organizing community festivals for residents to enjoy and to attract visitors. You’ll see from this guide that Lower Lonsdale has “all the business you need”, thus that’s our Association’s logo. Come to Lower Lonsdale: Everything’s Here! Welcome As Mayor of the City of North Vancouver, it is my pleasure to invite you to experience our diverse Lower Lonsdale community. With so much to see and do, and the continued enhancement of the City’s waterfront, Lower Lonsdale is quickly becoming an even more sought after area to live and must-see destination for visitors. Located on the City’s waterfront across from downtown Vancouver, Lower Lonsdale offers a wide variety of commercial and professional services, hotels, restaurants, shopping, art galleries, a performing arts theatre, recreation centre and parks. The area hosts annual community events including Party at the Pier and the Lower Lonsdale Fall Festival, and features popular attractions such as the Lonsdale Quay Public Market, Waterfront Park, Burrard Dry Dock Pier and the new Shipbuilders Square. The new Pinnacle Hotel and Convention Centre has been a popular destination for both visitors and residents since its opening at the beginning of 2010. The continued enhancement of the City’s waterfront, including the North Shore Spirit Trail, will contribute to Lower Lonsdale’s reputation as a lively, walkable neighbourhood for all ages. I hope that the time you spend in Lower Lonsdale gives you the chance to explore the many attractions, take in the breathtaking scenery and experience the warm hospitality of the Lower Lonsdale community.

5-Show Subscription Packages starting at $80! PRESENTATION HOUSE THEATRE’S 2010 – 2011 THIRD STREET SEASON Guttenberg! the Musical! Sept 22 – Oct 9 Bud and Doug, a pair of aspiring playwrights are performing a reading of their new project: a big, splashy musical about printing press inventor, Johann Gutenberg. With an unending supply of enthusiasm, Bud and Doug sing all the songs and play all the parts in their historic epic, in hopes that one of the producers in the audience will give them a Broadway contract.
9 Parts of Desire ~ Oct 14 - 30 In the news every day the catastrophic war on Iraq is superficially being played out. 9 Parts of Desire lifts the veil, giving us an intimate look at nine vastly different Iraqi women who struggle not only with the burden of tradition, but also with the anguish of war and the guilt of survival. “An example of how art can remake the world!” - The New Yorker
Trudeau Stories ~ Nov 9 -13 The enigma of Pierre Elliott Trudeau is a bug Canadians will never fully get out of our system. His presence redefined a somewhat dowdy country in the eyes of the world, leaving us with a collective anxiety about whether we quite measured up. Brooke Johnson has captured this strange ambivalence in a beautiful onewoman show about her friendship with the just-retired PM when she was only 23.
Damian ~ Nov 17 - 28 A heart-wrenching story of love and compassion about Father Damien de Veuster who lived among the lepers on Molokai Island. The play confronts his challenes of self doubt and undying compassion towards what he originally describes as a dumping place for human beings.
Visiting Mr. Green ~ Feb 10 - 27, 2011 86 year old widower Mr. Green is almost hit by a car driven by young corporate executive Ross Gardiner. Found guilty of reckless driving, Ross is ordered to spend the next six months making weekly visits to Mr. Green. What starts off as a comedy about two people who resent being in the same room together develops into a gripping and poignant drama, as family secrets are revealed and old wounds are opened.
Beautiful View ~ April 4 - 9, 2011 A Beautiful View is a seriocomic trek across the intangibles of love and our affinity for rewriting history in its name. The production features the acting talents of Colleen Wheeler and Diane Brown, with direction by Daniel McIvor.
Ali and Ali 7 ~ May 24 – 28, 2011 Series creators Camyar Chai, Guillermo Verdecchia and Marcus Youssef turn their delightfully idiosyncratic brand of postidentity satire to yet another brave new world, where the Devil President Bush has been replaced by a Nobel Prize Winner whose middle name is Hussein.

Happy (urban) trails to you You don’t have to head to the mountains for a fun ride: LoLo is loaded with great trails. The North Shore is renowned for its gnarly mountain bike trails. But you don’t have to head for the mountains to enjoy some great trail riding. Believe it or not, Lower Lonsdale is loaded with tons of great trails. Come to Obsession: Bikes and we can outline a challenging route for you that won’t require Olympic lungs and quads of steel to enjoy.
Note: These are multi-use trails – please respect others. You are riding at your own risk so be prepared. Pack a tube, some tools, a cellphone and let someone know what you are doing. Expect the unexpected. Above all, have great time getting to know your neighbourhood. All these routes are about an hour round trip – or easily combined for a longer ride.
For Instance, head west from the store and at the intersection of Marine Drive and Keith Road head into Mission Creek trails. Ride north up this network and come out either at Carson Graham secondary school or Westview Road. Go north up Westview and carefully get to the sidewalk on the southwest side of the Westview TransCanada interchange. Ride west towards Capilano Road on the sidewalk. Note the bridge ahead and ride up the sidewalk to it (about 300m ahead). Head north on this bridge and as you cross look on your right for a residential road (Colwood Drive). Turn right on this road and continue north looking for a gravel path on your right. This path goes down to the Grif!n skateboard bowl and the trails of Mosquito Creek. On the west side of Mosquito creek is a crushed-gravel route and on the east side there’s some singletrack. It’s generally frowned upon to ride down the west side so try the east.
When you reach the bottom, either head back up or cross the creek and ride up the west side. When you reach Queens Road cross and go to the end of Del Rio Drive. The trail continues north as a crushed-gravel ride or if you keep your eyes peeled you will !nd some good singletrack on the right side. If you take this singletrack you will reach Glencanyon Drive. Turnaround and repeat the route backwards!
This is just one example of a fun local route. Half the joy of having a mountain bike is exploring. Other great lines start at the corner of Keith Road and Brooksbank or at Bridgeman Park or up Grand Boulevard and into the Greenway park trails or the trails around the Lucas Centre. To help !nd good biking routes go to Google maps or stop by Obsession: Bikes for advice. James Wilson, Obsession: Bikes Spring | Summer 2010 ❚ www.lowerlonsdalebusinessassociation.com ❚ 23

Spirit Trail linking communities to each other The City of North Vancouver’s once industrial shoreline is turning into a destination waterfront as the North Shore Spirit Trail builds links between key communities offering sparkling views along a “linear park” design that has scooped national design awards. In Lower Lonsdale a key part of the city’s 6.5-kilometre portion of the Spirit Trail, a multiphase project which will eventually stretch from Deep Cove to Horseshoe Bay, has already been completed. A landmark collaboration between the City of North Vancouver and the Squamish Nation has resulted in a beautiful 300-metre stretch of trail on the Squamish Nation Mosquito Creek Marina, adorned with Squamish Nation art and signature CNV landscaping touches as well as attractive sitting areas which encourage walkers to take a break and take in the views of the Vancouver skyline and boats bobbing in the Burrard Inlet. Eventually the CNV’s portion of the Spirit Trail will have two key industrialarea bypasses, with a variety of connector choices from Lower Lonsdale to Moodyville Park, and an overpass of the CN rail tracks at the foot of MacKay Street, over to Harbourside. The logo for the Spirit Trail is a gender neutral !gure named Shewalh Stelmexw (Sha-woth Stol-molth) - which means ‘people’s path’ in Squamish. Squamish Nation representative Sheryl Fisher says visitors are wowed by the gateway to the walk, a towering and intricate carving by artist Wade Baker commissioned by the City of North Vancouver, called “Ancient Wisdom.” Baker said the shared trail has kicked off an effective working partnership between the Squamish Nation and City of North Vancouver. “Now many of our departments work closely,” Baker said. “The path is amazing and already we see many people enjoying it.”

Heidi slumps on the pavement. “She doesn’t want to go home,” Michelle Horvath says. Heidi has just visited some of her favourite places in Lower Lonsdale. The 11-year-old Dachshund loves the waterfront, her owner Horvath says. “But her favourite place is the 1st Street park,” she notes. Lower Lonsdale is a pretty dogfriendly neighbourhood. Not only are there lots of places for Heidi to play, but there are also lots of other doggies, Horvath says.
She’s been living in the area for 15 years. It’s convenient, beautiful and has gone through a lot of change, she says. “I watched my Mount Baker view disappear,” Horvath jokes. Heidi pushes her belly up off the sidewalk. Horvath takes it as an indicator that she’s accepted her home-bound fate. With that the two head for their apartment. “She’s probably thinking she is going to get a treat,” Horvath says.

secret makes it worth crossing the water
unspoiled
For the last 20 years, Fernando Bergeron has boarded the SeaBus from his home in Vancouver, crossed the water and partaken in a secret he was sure was going to be spoiled years ago. But it hasn’t. “I come here and I have lunch. I like the way they cook oysters,” he says pointing to the Quay. “They are the best oysters in town.” Lower Lonsdale is also a great place to watch the port life, Bergeron says, noting he used to own a 33-foot power boat.
“And there’s this lady that goes by, the one with the pusher,” he jokes. The New Brunswick native is retired and therefore has more time to explore the waterfront. He watches Cates Tugs do the grunt work as the freighters come and go. Then there are the cruise ships. If that wasn’t enough activity, there’s also the power boats and sail boats moored in Mosquito Creek Marina. “I also like the SeaBus,” Bergeron adds.

Tony Nardi, chair of the North Shore Waterfront Industrial Association, stands on the Burrard Pier.
Discovering the waterfront industry on the North Shore It’s another bustling day along the North Vancouver industrial waterfront: a hulking BC Ferry vessel is in for repairs at the Washington Marine Group’s drydock; tugboats near the Quay prepare to steer a bulk carrier ship to the grain elevators; and a freight train rumbles underground towards the Kinder Morgan terminals. Of course, unless you’re standing on the pier at the foot of Lower Lonsdale or have a good seat on the SeaBus, it’s nearly
impossible to see the non-stop activity taking place along North Vancouver’s along the waterfront. The North Shore waterfront is dotted with industry: ship builders, tug boat operators and export commodity terminals – to name a few. On a typical day, large bulk carriers are loaded with forestry products, grain, coal, potash and other export commodities. They then set sail for return destinations such as Japan, Korea, China, India, Brazil and other countries in

Southeast Asia and Europe. “There is a lot happening today,” explains Tony Nardi of Neptune Bulk Terminals. “It’s a busy place.” Really busy. In 2008, for instance, $10 billion worth of Canadian exports "owed through terminals on the North Shore, explains Nardi. Nardi is the current president of the North Shore Waterfront Industrial Association. The NSWIA, formed in 1999, has 12 members
and employs more than 3,000 people, many of whom live on the North Shore. “The closer you are to the (industrial) waterfront, the more people understand what it is about,” says Nardi. “There’s a lot of pride, especially here in North Vancouver, about the waterfront history and maritime connection.”
To help educate kids about the waterfront industry, the NSWIA sponsors a popular program called Working Waterfront that teaches Grade 5 students about everything from the different industries on the waterfront and possible careers to the types of cargo ships and waterfront lingo. The course culminates
with a 90-minute harbour cruise. “When you see it from the water you get a totally different perspective,” says Nardi.
For more information about the Working Waterfront program, call 604-788-8064 or email outreach@vancouvermaritimemuseum.com.

Take a break in our Community Garden The writing on the fence says “friendship gates,” a welcoming message to passersby to come in and smell the flowers at the Lower Lonsdale Community Garden. Built in June 2004, the 50-plot garden has become a popular destination for green thumbs without their own space in the dense urban jungle. They grow everything from perennial flowers to vegetables, but visitors during the summer will find an explosion of colour compared to the apartments surrounding the garden. Heather Johnstone, coordinator for the Edible Garden Project which encourages and helps the creation of community gardens, says community gardens have not only provided people the opportunity to grow things, but it’s helping create community where there otherwise wasn’t any. “It is like a starting point for building relationships between neighbours, and the community has transformed,” Johnstone said. For example, several garden plot members have been growing vegetables for the North Shore Neighbourhood House to donate to the food bank. The Lonsdale Community Garden is located at the corner of East 2nd Street and St. George’s Avenue in North Vancouver. It’s open to the public during the day.

New book explores the history of Lonsdale Avenue It’s a grainy black and white photo of men in military uniforms digging trenches. When Shervin Shahriari asks people where they think it was taken, most guess somewhere along the frontline in Europe during the First World War. When he tells them the photograph was snapped at North Vancouver’s Mahon Park in 1916, they can’t believe it.
As it turns out, the men in the photo are from the 6th Field Engineer Squadron, which was based in North Van. During WW1 they built and tested mock trenches at Mahon Park. “It’s something I didn’t expect to be happening in North Vancouver at the time,” explains Shahriari, who recently published the book North Vancouver’s Lonsdale Neighbourhood.
“That was an interesting !nding.” Shahriari, who immigrated to Canada from Iran in the 1980s, has always been a history buff and after settling in North Vancouver he began to wonder about the Lonsdale corridor’s past. A volunteer member of the North Vancouver Museum and Archives Commission, Shahriari was able to access boxes of historical pho-

tographs of North Vancouver and he began to select interesting pictures for a historical look at Lonsdale Avenue. From over 1,000 photos, he selected approximately 240 for the book, which was no easy task. “It’s always hard to narrow it down,” says Shahriari, whose father was a famous Iranian author. Next, from archival information – sometimes in the form of handwritten notes
tucked in with photos or biographies submitted by descendants of early settlers in North Van and small write-ups scrawled on the images – he wrote short stories to compliment the photos. The result is a photographic time capsule that takes readers through North Vancouver’s rich history, from the launch of Ferry 1 and streetcars on Lonsdale to Dominion Day celebrations, early settlers
and businesses at the foot of Lonsdale.
