SENIORS INFORMATION & RESOURCES
W
hen seeking out senior-specific fi information and resources on matters such as health, special interest groups or local fi fitness opportunities, it can be hard to know where to begin.
The supplement you hold in your hands is a good place to start but there are a few spots in Nanaimo worth considering as places to save a lot of time while finding out more about opportunities and services available locally. Seniors centres in Nanoose Bay and Nanaimo are a logical place to begin, with friendly people always on hand to offer any assistance or advice they can and many tempting opportunities for education and recreation available right there. Some numbers to jot down as contacts of interest might include the Paradise Island Seniors Society at 250-7549566 and the Harbour City Seniors at 250-755-7501 – both are indispensable resources for anyone looking to stay active in an atmosphere that promotes camaraderie and new friendships. Naturally an assortment of health issues can arise in age and the provincial government’s Health and Seniors Information Line is available during regular business hours to help at www.gobv.bc.ca/health or by calling 1-800-4654911. Just a taste of places to get informed. Happy hunting!
Seniors centres are a great starting place for information.

SENIORS HOUSING & ASSISTED LIVING
T
he beauty of Nanaimo has been attracting people for generations and in recent decades it has become a favourite retirement destination for its good weather, scenery and active lifestyle. Though vacancy rates are historically low, the region off ffers a variety of housing options for the area’s large senior population ranging from single family developments to all levels of assisted living. The area boasts a healthy development industry building condos and single family homes that may be just a little more physically accessible than in other regions, up to various forms of adult only facilities, senior specific fi housing and assisted living options. Many seniors live in single family houses, but significant fi numbers live in condos, apartments, mobile homes and other types of housing. The region also has an increasing number of assisted living options for those who need diff fferent levels of long-term care but are generally able to get around on their own. Assisted living includes a private, lockable, unfurnished unit
in a building with common dining and socializing spaces and includes two meals a day, light weekly housekeeping, laundering of linens, social and recreational opportunities and a 24-hour emergency system. The cost is based on income with residents paying 70 per cent of their monthly after-tax income, up to a maximum. If there is permanent decline in someone’s health, a significant fi increase in care needs, or an inability to make decisions on their own, people may move from assisted living to a higher level of care. Many of the area’s larger, newer senior living facilities include a range from independent living with virtually no help up to residential care options that provide 24-hour professional care and supervision for people with complex health needs. Staff ff administers medications and assist residents with daily activities such as eating, bathing and dressing. There is also a variety of home care help options and specialized housing for people with dementia or people living in the community that require specialised services such as physically accessible or drug and alcohol free.
THE CARE YOU NEED AT AN AFFORDABLE PRICE At Wexford Creek experience the freedom and comfort of home with the flexibility of customizing your services in a private suite with full kitchen.

SENIORS SERVICES & ORGANIZATIONS
Organizations, services there to help With populations in Nanaimo that include a large percentage of seniors, it’s only natural that the community as a whole has tailored much of its services and organizations around assisting our elders with their everyday needs. Nanaimo as a region provides plenty for The Nanaimo Telephone Visiting Society started more than 30 years ago with the discovery of a diary next to a dead woman’s body. The diary contained more than 39 days worth of entries, all exactly the same – ‘No one called or visited me today.’ The elderly woman’s story was reported in a Winnipeg newspaper and came to the attention of Sister Roseline Dunn, who formed a Phone a Friend Society to lessen the loneliness seniors feel. A few years later, Dunn moved to Nanaimo and, noticing the large elderly
seniors, as do private care facilities, local businesses and volunteer-based organizations - from social advocacy to music and theatre groups. Within this guide, there are a multitude of resources to choose from.
population, felt the same sort of organization was needed here. She formed the Nanaimo Telephone Visiting Ministry Society, which later became the Nanaimo Telephone Visiting Society. Christine McCubbin said there are seniors who are lonely in Nanaimo who just need someone to connect with. They just need to know that people care. She gets calls from seniors who have no one to talk to. Their friends have passed away and their family lives in a different city, province or country.
“They get desperately lonely and start to get depressed and if depression sets in everything goes downhill,” said McCubbin. McCubbin said the goal of the society, celebrating 30 years in Nanaimo this year, is to help seniors remain as independent as long as possible. Volunteers visit with clients through telephone calls and in person. To volunteer, donate or for more information about the Nanaimo Telephone Visiting Society, please call 250-756-9455, e-mail telvisit@shaw.ca or go to www.ntvs.ca.

SAVING FOR THE FUTURE
WAS THE FIRST STEP. LET US HELP
MAKE THOSE SAVINGS LAST. How much can I withdraw to do everything I’ve planned? How much spending is too much spending? Will all the years of saving be enough? If these are the questions you’re asking yourself these days, let’s schedule a time when we can sit down and answer them together. We’ll take a look at all your investments – regardless of where you hold them – to determine if your savings match your plans, or if we can adjust your plans to meet your savings.

Caregiving in Canada By Wendy Pratt, Executive Director, Nanaimo Community Hospice Some startling statistics on the issues surrounding caregiving in Canada were recently highlighted in an online report from the Canadian Association of Retired Persons (CARP) and in a fact sheet released by the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association (CHPCA). It is estimated that there are presently over fi five million caregivers in Canada and approximately 1 million of these are caregiving for a loved one in the last months or year of their life. By 2031 that number of older adults requiring formal or informal assistance will have increased by 200 per cent. In a recent study sited by CARP, 26 per cent of Canadians reported they had cared for a family member or close friend with a serious health problem in the last 12 months. Of these, 22 per cent took upwards of one month off ff work and 41 per

cent used personal savings. As a result, 8 in 10 reported suff ffering emotional diffi fficulties, 7 out of 10 reported they needed respite, 54 per cent reported fi financial diffi fficulties, and 50 per cent reported weaker physical health. Embracing an aging-athome strategy is cost effective ff and would preserve the dignity and independence of older adults and minimize the need for institutionalization and unnecessary ER visits, however this hinges on improved health care delivery and support for family caregivers. Those providing care and support at Nanaimo Community Hospice understand the growing dilemma of caregivers as the baby boomers and their parents continue to age. Hospice has many programs that support caregivers. Call 250-758-8857 for more information on free programs offered ff through Hospice.
