woman business owner of the year:

Lesley Blackman Pharmacist

A

s a five-year-old girl in South Africa, walking back from the pharmacy with her mother, Lesley Blackman surprised her mom by announcing that when she grew up, she was “going to be a chemist lady.” As an adult, she would make that dream come true, becoming a pharmacist first in South Africa, then in her new country of Canada. But another part of her had second dream – to own her own business. Then a decade ago, a chance stop by her husband saw a “for sale” sign on the pharmacy in the Estevan Village and a with a little encouragement, Blackman took the plunge, quickly becoming an integral part of the community. “Now I have a business that is 10 years old, in a place that’s Heaven on earth,” says the Black Press Women in Business Awards’ Buisness Woman of the Year, presented by the Women’s Enterprise Centre. Nominated by her staff, Blackman demonstrates a business ethic and commitment to her customers that makes her well-deserving of the

title, says pharmacy technician Yael Wollach. “She gives her customers excellent service and always displays genuine care and concern for their well-being. It is not unusual for her on occasion to do her own deliveries when the pharmacy is closed,” Wollach notes. The emergency number for clients is Blackman’s home number, a comfort for clients who may be going through a challenging time. “I’m a call away and just knowing there’s someone to reach out to (can help),” Blackman says. “It’s community.” And it’s what sets her apart from some of the bigger guys on the pharmacy block. “They can’t compete with the familiarity, the oneon-one,” Blackman says. Witnessing Blackman’s dedication daily, “she has a very strong work ethic and runs a ‘tight ship’ and expects the same of her fellow workers. She herself is not above doing mundane chores around the pharmacy and would never ask a co-worker to perform a task that she herself would not do,” Wollach says. Sponsored by

That philosophy extends to her fellow businesses in the village, with whom she has a good relationship, regularly referring clients to her neighbours. Blackman is also a member of the Estevan Merchant Committee, which represents the area’s merchants and residents, and has organized a variety of community festivities, including a children’s Easter egg hunt and Christmas carolling on the street. Additionally, Blackman is a big supporter of local schools, and “is also known to (have) a dog-friendly pharmacy where all the dogs of the neighbourhood know that there are doggie treats to be had, whether you’re stopping into the pharmacy or not!” Still, to be honoured as Woman Business Owner of the Year was a huge surprise. “To be recognized to this degree – I had no idea,” Blackman says, emphasizing there’s nowhere else she would want to be. “I just love what I do,” she reflects. “I can’t think of anything else I would like to do.”

rom office assistant to member service manager in two years – rising star indeed!” reads the first line of Al Kemp’s nomination of Black Press Women in Business Rising Star Award winner Carly Ludwar. “I didn’t even know I was nominated,” says Ludwar, a native of Creston, B.C. who moved to Victoria after studying marketing at university in Kelowna. “It was very surprising!” Given that the society also recently won the Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce Customer Service Award, “it’s been an outstanding year for us,” she says. Ludwar joined the society as an office assistant in 2006. Through she had little experience at the beginning, she had plenty to commend her, including her initiative to learn more about the industry, and about the current technology that could help her further the projects undertaken. “Within a year she was promoted to Member Service Representative and less than a year later moved to Member Service Manager, responsible for the overall member service function and performance of three Member Service Representatives.” What has made this amazing rise possible? “Carly’s dedication to her responsibilities, to ensuring best quality service to our 2,200 members, and to innovation and expansion of our services is without parallel. In over 40 years of managerial and corporate executive experience, I have been privileged to work with only a handful of people who would be equal to Carly in their learning ability, performance, work ethic, creativity and overall contribution to organizational success,” Kemp says. “This is an interesting place to work because you never have two days that are the same,” Ludwar says. Plus, “all the work that I’m doing, I’m enjoying,” she adds. In the last two years, Ludwar’s achievements have mounted steadily. She has single-handedly organized two successful trade shows, paired with a dinner, AGM and entertaining casino night for several hundred members. Additionally, she has designed and written articles for the bi-monthly news magazine Top

lack Press’ Women in Business Awards judges were pleased to name Pam Skelton as this year’s Eco-Entrepreneur. A former elementary school teacher, the owner of Not Just Pretty Modern Organic Clothing opened her Fort Street eco-boutique and online business six years ago, showcasing designer clothing, jewellery and beauty products with a sustainable and ethical focus. “I always wanted to open a business; it was a dream,” says Skelton, who combined her passion for the environment and interest in fashion to fill a gap in the local retail market. Inspiring her was both her mother, who when Skelton was a child, opened her own antiques business, and her daughter, who runs her own hair studio in Vancouver. Attending a trade show in Chicago inspired the concept of merging “sustainability and style. “I was very impressed with what some of the designers were coming up with.” Over those first six years, her business has grown to the degree that Not Just Pretty now offers products from more than 40 designers, compared to just 10 or so at opening. Today, the store offers not only local designers but also those from all over North America and beyond – new on the shelves, for example, is a new line of shoes, direct from London — anything with an ecological focus, she says. Skelton’s fellow Fort Street entrepreneurs also appreciate her talents and efforts, including Trevor Walker, owner of Plenty Epicurean Pantry, who calls Skelton a remarkable neighbour in the four years they have worked nearby each other. Skelton’s marketing savvy was evident quickly, he says. “Right off the bat she was suggesting that we combine our store’s grand opening with her annual fashion show to make it a bigger event. She has also been generous with her business advice and reassuring through the inevitable highs and lows of business ownership.”

Skelton also shares her time and leadership with her staff. “I have witnessed Pam mentor her own employees, even to the extent of having two of them establish businesses in the same block...In both cases Pam has maintained a supportive and collaborative relationship with them,” says Walker, who with Skelton is a member of the Green Collective, an affiliation of Victoria shops promoting sustainability and offering customers ethical purchasing choices. “Utilizing the philosophy of ‘co-opetition,’ we cooperate with other shop owners who may be in direct competition with us but who share a common vision of sustainability.” Skelton has taken a leadership role in the Collective. Additionally, she is a member of 1% for the Planet, which donates one per cent from every sale to environmental organizations. Over the years Not Just Pretty has supported The Land Conservancy, the Sidney-based Sea Change, the Rainforest Conservation Foundation and Green Kids.

Storey, a well-received trade magazine that has enjoyed increased advertising and updated design, consistently rated highly among members. On the development side of her career, Ludwar successfully trains new employees quickly and effectively, expertly preparing them for work with members. “This achievement cannot be overstated as the business of being a residential landlord is a complicated one. It is critical that every staff member has complete and accurate knowledge of legislation, contracts, rental unit operations, etc. and provides correct information in responding to our members. We analogize our performance to that of airline pilots: 99 per cent successful landings is unacceptable.” And this is just the beginning. “There is no question this young woman is destined for ‘stardom,’” Kemp says. “Although only 23, with the full support of out Board of Directors, she is being groomed to replace me as CEO. This fact alone supports her receiving the Rising Star Award.”

ominated by her son for the Black Press Women in Business Above and Beyond Award, Fran Kitson is most certainly a deserving recipient. In fact, Doug Kitson says, “those words alone describe my mother.” Fran Kitson began volunteering at the Mustard Seed Street Church & Food Bank back in 1983. After six years, “mom’s gifts were soon obvious to the Mustard Seed” and she was asked to join the staff. “It really opened up my eyes,” Fran says, “I just volunteered more and more and they came to me and said, ‘We’d like you to come on staff as volunteer coordinator,’” recalls Fran, who says she was stunned to hear of the award. It was only the start. In time her skills, personality and dedication earned her the promotion to the position she holds today, Advocacy/Interview Co-ordinator. Now, “I’ve been there for 25 years. My kids have grown up through the Mustard Seed,” she says. Bringing to her work “skills, personality and (a) gentle loving spirit...Mom wears many hats,” Doug wrote in his nomination. She works in housing, outreach to community resources such as dentists (and) doctors, and is part of the pastoral counselling staff at Mustard Seed. Additional roles include being part of the Special Events team at Mustard Seed. Fran is a drug and alcohol counsellor, working with many people seeking help with their addiction and is a part of the team for Hope Farm Healing Centre. At Mustard Seed, she works and supervises others in the interview area for those receiving food hampers. “Mom always makes the clients feel entitled to the food hamper, she encourages them that it’s not forever, she brings hope in times of deep despair; mom never stops giving,” Doug observes. Additionally, Fran is a prison liaison, working at William Head prison. “She advocates with the inmates and is respected by the institution as she is allowed to give support to an inmate in a parole hearing,” Doug says, noting his mother is also a volunteer with the Victoria Parole Office as a Community Adult Mentoring Support worker. And as a citizen escort, she takes authorized inmates to support meetings, church, or home for a

family visit. “Not everyone is called to do this type of work; for mom is a privilege,” Doug says. Regardless of what has brought the men to the place they’re at when she meets them, “it was not who he was born to be...and he can be someone different,” she says. She does not give advice, knowing that what may have worked for her or someone else is not necessarily a good fit for others. She might ask instead, “What if you could stop that addiction? What kind of life would you have? “I know I can make a difference and help someone get on that path,” she says. Today, the widowed mother of two and grandmother of five also takes time from her busy work schedule to care for her friends and family, along with time for herself with a good book, movie or play. “Plus, there’s always a home-made cookie in the cookie jar!” Doug notes. “Mom is without a doubt a lady that goes ‘Above and Beyond’ her call of duties in out community.” And at 64-years-young, Fran loves her job and shows little interest retiring! “It’s who she is.”

Customer Profiling: How to Hit the Target T

he biggest issues in marketing are budget and message. If your target market is “women,” it’s going to be pretty hard to find a single, clear message that appeals to all of them. Since women come in an endless variety of shades and flavours, with so many different interests, it’s almost impossible to find a mix of marketing and advertising media that could possibly reach them all. Well, unless you have an endless budget. To market your product or service effectively, you need information, or “the profile” of the customer you want to sell to. Trying to lump everyone together simply doesn’t work. The solution is to think truly targeted market, that small, hard-to-hit sweet spot in the middle of the target (the bull’s eye). Let’s look at how to get started.

Finding the Sweet Spot

The first step when starting in business is doing market research to define as specific a description of your prospective customers as possible. You’ll get a pretty good idea of who is likely to purchase, but until you actually get going and test the waters, it’s still only theory. Once you have a few clients in your portfolio, you’ll begin to get a sense of whether your initial ideas were on the mark or whether you encountered some surprises along the way. As you adjust your focus based on the response you’ve received (i.e. sales), you move one ring closer to the bull’s eye.

Go Straight to the Source

Ask your customers! There is no better way to understand the unique characteristics of your customers and why they choose to do business with you than asking them directly. Find out what they like, what they don’t like, what’s working for them and what’s not. Put yourself in their shoes and learn what motivates their buying behaviour.

Niche Marketing

There’s a good chance even with the more focused target market not all of your customers look exactly alike. That’s great news! Now you get to take the final step and decide precisely which bull’s eye – which sweet spot – you want to hit. Look at the shortlist of customer profiles you have identified as likely prospects, which one do you want to spend your time, energy and marketing budget on? To make that decision, you’ll want to factor in the hard facts, such as which category of customer is most profitable, with the human facts, such as which customers do you most enjoy serving? You can gather a great deal of research and experience to take you most of the way toward hitting your customer profile target, but in the end the final decision is up to you.

A little Western hospitality goes a long way at CWB A little western hospitality goes a long way – and it’s a founding philosophy of Canadian Western Bank (CWB.) Margaret Elliott, Manager, Retail Banking, has been offering her clients excellent service since she started at CWB’s Victoria branch in 1998. With an open door policy for all of her clients, Elliott is often found enjoying a coffee with a client who has popped in to say hello. “We truly believe in providing the best experience for our customers,” Elliott says. “While we are up-to-date on the latest convenience technologies, we still believe in giving our customers good old-fashioned service, respect and value.” Conveniently located downtown on View and Douglas streets, steps from the View Street Parkade, the welcoming smiles greeting clients and visitors as they walk in the front doors are typical of the federally chartered bank’s focus on customer service. “I would say that with 99 per cent of the people coming through our doors, everyone here knows their name,” Elliott says. CWB boasts more than 1,000 employees working in 39 branches in the four Western provinces and just celebrated

Margaret Elliott, Manager, Retail Banking, Canadian Western Bank its 89th consecutive successful quarter. While Canadian Western Bank is well known for commercial lending, not everyone is as familiar with its full-service personal banking. In fact, CWB offers competitive rates and all retail services. Continuing that customer-first focus, appointments aren’t necessary for most services, such as opening an account. “If you’re looking for a bank that works as hard as you do, whether you need investments, a personal bank account, a $50 million business loan, or mutual funds for your retirement, CWB can help you find the product that suits your needs,” Elliott says.

Bay manager looks to the past, present and exciting future of iconic shop By Jennifer Blyth

One of the best-kept secrets at the downtown Bay more people should know about? Ride the escalator to the top floor restaurant and enjoy a delicious, affordable meal and one of the best views in town. “You have to go up to experience it!”

I

t was Christmas, back in the 1970s, when a nine-year-old Joanne Boyer would have her first experience with The Bay. Recently emigrated to Canada from England, she and her mother were at Toronto’s Queens Street Bay store, waiting for that magical moment when the holiday windows would be revealed. “It was my first Christmas in Canada, so to see those curtains open – that was when I became very much emotionally connected to the Bay,” says Boyer, who recently took over from retiring Adele Matte as manager of the downtown Bay store. Boyer, always a big shopper, knew early on where her interests would serve her well. “It’s my pastime and my passion,” she says with a smile. Continuing a career in retail – generally fashion retail – that has spanned years, Boyer took the helm of the Bay downtown this past July. Part of what makes the Bay such an enduring presence is its unique place in Canadian history. “For me, now being part of the Bay, I am looking at the history of it even more,” Boyer says. At the same time, “how is it staying relevant for the future? It’s really exciting.” It’s also an exciting time for the downtown Bay, as both the brands and store culture are evolving. Both Victoria stores are “rightsizing,” or looking more closely at their unique place

Joanne Boyer is thrilled to be at the helm of the downtown Bay store. in the city – the downtown Bay with its more urban, city centre position and the Mayfair Bay with its more suburban setting – and ensuring they have the right products in the right places. Boyer’s downtown store, for example, where even the architecture lends itself to a different shopping experience, is emphasizing more fashion, for both men and women. Fashions for the home are also a highlight as the fourth floor accommodates a variety of furnishings ideal for outfitting both new downtown condos and neighbouring heritage homes. New fashion additions include the Coach brand of bags, plus more designers that aren’t

found at Mayfair, including Halston Heritage (linked to the actress Sarah Jessica Parker), Rachel Roy Signature, an up-and-coming U.S. designer, and the ultra-popular Not Your Daughter’s Jeans, “a miracle jean,” Boyer says. “We really want to suit the downtown customer,” she says, but adds that it’s not all about high-end; shoppers will find lines to suit just about any budget. “I think the one thing that’s guaranteed in retail is that it’s going to change. I just love the speed at which it moves,” Boyer reflects. “That’s what keeps me in it, but I love the people as well.”

And it’s not simply the interaction with her staff and customers Boyer enjoys, but actively seeking their input as well, so don’t be surprised to see the manager on the store floor, greeting customers and asking about their shopping experience. “I want to know what the customers are saying,” she says. “It’s all about working together to achieve a common goal.” Walking the talk, Boyer’s email address is prominent on each receipt, so that if there’s a compliment, complaint or observation, customers can comment directly to the boss. “It’s making a difference and it’s resonating with our customers. There are some really great things that are starting to happen.” Expect Boyer to be there to see them through. “I plan to be here for a long time,” she says. “This is just a beautiful place. The community is amazing and there’s just a quality of life here you don’t get anywhere else. “We are very proud to call this home.”

The Business of Business:

Building success from the ground up By Jennifer Blyth

S

wan’s Cara Segger tells a story about the day Swans pub was so busy that Janina Ceglarz, “the boss” not only of Swans but also of numerous buildings in Old Town, was found not in her office, but washing dishes to help the staff catch up. It only happened once, Ceglarz quickly points out with a laugh, but it points to how she approaches business. “Being at the job for 20 years, you practically master everything,” says Ceglarz, CEO of Heritage Realty Properties. Ceglarz came on board with the company at the beginning, with local businessman and philanthropist Michael Williams. Back before Swans even existed, “I was his first employee,” property manager for Williams’ lower Johnson Street buildings, Ceglarz recalls. At the same time, Ceglarz, who left communist Poland with her husband to come to Canada in 1981, was raising her young daughter and attending the University of Victoria in the evening, working toward her Masters degree in Public Administration. While a career in property management wasn’t in her plans, today, it’s

tough to envision Ceglarz anywhere but where she is. “Then Swans was opened and while I was keen to go and work for government, he offered me the job of vice-president,” Ceglarz says, noting that their complementary styles made the two good business partners: “I was business, he was the visionary. The ‘marriage’ was really great in that we also became friends.” Sadly, it came to an end 10 years ago when Williams suffered a fatal heart attack. While he had left his properties to the University of Victoria, he also asked that Ceglarz stay on to jointly manage the holdings. Today, Heritage Realty Properties is operated with a board of directors at arm’s length from UVic, and Ceglarz oversees not only those same LoJo buildings she started with, but also a selection of other buildings on Broad Street and of course, the iconic Swans. “Although I miss Michael very much, my job hasn’t really changed. He asked me to run the company as if he was alive, so I’m staying at the post. I would miss it too much. “I’m actually looking for opportunities to develop more,” she says. “Michael Williams was a pioneer of revitalization of downtown Victoria. We try to continue his vision.”

Part of that vision has to do with helping tenants, primarily small, independent shops, succeed. “We do whatever we can to help them survive in these difficult times,” Ceglarz says, pointing to initiatives such as last year’s Winter Scavenger Hunt through the shops of LoJo and the summer’s street festival that infused the area with energy and excitement. In the same vein, Ceglarz also supports bringing more people downtown to live and is excited about some of the projects reinvigorating Old Town. It’s also about mindset. “Business I think should be innovative and we should be conducting business for success, not for failure.” Complementing her business philosophy is a support for the community – supporting organizations such as the Youth Empowerment Society, for example, and Victoria Hospice. And then there’s Swans’ long-time support of C-FAX Santas Anonymous, including the campaign kick-off coming up again next month, Habitat for Humanity, Our Place and others. “We are helping a lot of local charities,” Ceglarz says. “I think every business should do that; it’s very important that we who are more fortunate in business or our personal life should support others. I Cont. on Page 34

Join the fight against breast cancer during awareness month T his month women here in Victoria and across Canada join the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation in marking Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation is the leading national volunteer-based organization dedicated to creating a future without breast cancer, and the dedication serves to remind Canadians that breast cancer is the most common cancer among Canadian women. However, if 70 per cent of eligible women had a regular mammogram, the mortality rate would be reduced by 30 to 35 per cent. Women age 40 and older are encouraged to book an appointment today by calling 1.888. GOHAVE1. Every year the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, BC/Yukon Region, along with its donors, sponsors and partners raise funds for the purpose of supporting the advancement of breast cancer research, prevention and early detection. Within the region, more than $15 million in breast cancer research grants, fellowships and research chairs has been funded by CBCF since 1992. And in 2009, almost $1 million in breast cancer research grants was awarded to five British Columbian researchers. Here on Vancouver Island, more than $1 million has been granted to local researchers since 1994, along with fellowships totalling $419,744 to support the work of innovative young Island researchers. In addition to research, Vancouver Island community grants have totalled $60,700 in the past two years, funding programs ranging from the Victoria Immigrant & Refugee Centre Society program, Healthy Immigrant and

dedicated to raising funds for breast cancer research, and education and awareness programs. Here in Victoria, the run takes place each year at the University of Victoria in early October.

Additional Breast Cancer fundraisers coming up include:

October’s Run for the Cure brought supporters together to raise funds for breast cancer research, education and awareness programs. Refugee Women – A Strategy for Prevention and Early Detection of Breast Cancer, to the Victoria YWCA’s Encore Program, providing support to women who have experienced breast cancer surgery. For many, dragon boating has become synonymous with the fight against breast cancer and with more than 220 breast cancer survivors from Vancouver Island participating each year in this international movement, it demonstrates that women can and do lead healthy and active

lives after breast cancer. Supporting paddlers’ efforts and initiatives, The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation has provided $143,500 in funding to 10 Island teams since 1998. Throughout the year, the Capital Region also plays host to a variety of events that raise both funds for and awareness of breast cancer, including the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure, Canada’s largest single day, volunteer-led fundraising event

• Through Oct. 30 at Winchester Galleries’ Humboldt Street location, the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation will benefit from the sale of works by artist Herbert Siebner. Angela Nielsen, daughter of the famed artist, and her husband Rene have generously donated more than 50 pieces of his work with proceeds to support a future without breast cancer, in memory of her father but also for her mother, Hannalore, who passed away from breast cancer. For details, call Winchester Gallery at 250-382-7750. • Wear pink or dress casual Oct. 28 and support the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. n estimated 55,000 to 75,000 Canadians have multiple sclerosis, a debilitating, multi-faceted disease that can affect each person differently. Commonly diagnosed between age of 15 and 40, and striking three times as many women as men, the impact on families is tremendous. For Tracey Gibson, Manager Development, South Vancouver Island Chapter of the MS Society, the opportunity to help has been remarkable. “When I was on maternity leave with my daughter, I realized I wanted to find a job that would provide me with a work-life balance and also the feeling of knowing that what I am doing is making a real difference,” Gibson reflects. In one of those “timing-iseverything” moments, “I received a call from the executive director wondering if I would be interested to come to chat with them. Walking through the doors of the MS Society I knew that this was a place that was really helping.” Three days after starting as Manager of Development, a woman visited the office and told Gibson she wanted to start up a walk team. Gibson learned the woman had been diagnosed with MS four months earlier. She had two children, worked full time and was struggling keeping it all together at the age of 33. When her children came home from school, she was often exhausted in bed and unable to cook dinner. She had to rely on friends and family to take the children to their activities and her son was often responsible for cooking dinner. “Looking at this women you would not see the MS, however it was changing her life daily. Coming into the MS Society was a way for her to feel connected and give her hope she and others could do something to find a way to end MS,” Gibson says. For everyone with MS, the society and the North Park Street centre is a welcoming

The MS Society’s Tracey Gibson (right) with Sukhi Tomana.

“For some people it’s a very social place for them to come and we often hear that it’s like a second home for them…” – Tracey Gibson place offering social, emotional and physical support. “It will provide something a little different for each person,” Gibson says. “For some people it’s a very social place for them to come and we often hear that it’s like a second home for them, a place where there MS is recognized by others who are going through the same things.” With MS often diagnosed in the family/career-building years, the results can be significant.

“As a woman with a career and a young family, my life is busy and there are times when I wake up that it would be great to crawl back into bed,” Gibson says. However, “there are many people living with MS who wake up and are not able to see, or their hand has gone numb and they cannot dress themselves and they literally have to crawl back into bed because the simple task of getting dressed has exhausted them. Those are the bad days.” On the good days, “many of the people that I meet continue to live life, and take each day as it comes. My inspiration comes from knowing that those who are living with MS have challenges each and every day to overcome, and that by my coming to work each day...I can work toward giving them some hope that one day we could find a cure for this disease.

Fall in Love with the New Styles of the Season

W

ith the calendar turning to October and more leaves on the ground than in the trees, it’s time to think about what fall and winter will hold for your wardrobe. For an insider’s look at what to expect this season, Hilary Jordan, Image/Wardrobe/Personal Shopping Consultant with The Style File™, offers a sneak peek. “Body-conscious silhouettes, timeless classics with a playful edge and retro opulence abound!” Jordan notes, but at the same time, “simple lady-like pieces and minimalism embrace a simple but elegant practicality.” The key, as always? “Shop for key pieces to mix and match that will give many stylish options to suit your clothing lifestyle.” Adding a modern touch to some of those classics can be a great way to stay current, without having to invest in a new wardrobe each season – wake up your fall wardrobe with these top trends:

Cyndi McLeod: Leading Royal Roads toward growth Royal Roads’ unique programs and innovative delivery model are among the university’s many strengths

P

ositioned on one of the country’s most charming campuses, in a vital, soughtafter corner of the globe, and boasting a unique education delivery model that allows professionals to pursue their studies while continuing to work, Royal Roads University has a lot to offer. Leading the charge to get that message out is Cyndi McLeod, MBA, Royal Roads University’s vice-president of marketing, recruitment and business development. McLeod joined Royal Roads last year after 10 years working at Thompson Rivers University as associate vice-president, international education, training and development, and chief executive officer of TRU World. “At Royal Roads I take a leadership role for all marketing and business development domestically and internationally,” McLeod explains. “As such I ensure Royal Roads is seen as a leader in education in British Columbia and around the world. The prestige of our programs and the high quality of education we offer is the foundation that helps us achieve our ambitious growth targets. ” With an MBA in International Business, McLeod has worked in B.C. post-secondary education for 26 years, including eight years as a dean, and in leadership roles in more than 30 different program areas. She has a success-

ful track record in marketing and business development, having worked in more than 110 countries worldwide. For her considerable efforts, McLeod received a distinguished service award from Thompson Rivers University in 2005 and an award for teaching excellence and community college leadership from Texas University in 1995. “It’s been a very exciting year for me,” she says when talking about her recent move to Victoria. “At Royal Roads we’ve seen the highest number of applications in our history and we’re still undergoing a brand rejuvenation process with more brand strategies expected to unfold in the next few months, so that will be exciting as well.” So what brought McLeod from Kamloops to Victoria? “Primarily it was the unique programs and delivery methods at Royal Roads that attracted me. When you look at other Canadian universities, Royal Roads has distinguished itself in finding programs that meet the needs of targeted working professionals and made education accessible to them,” she says, pointing to examples such as the Master’s in Tourism Management, the Master’s of Global Management and the popular Master’s in Leadership as just a few examples of the degrees that target midcareer professionals.

Cyndi McLeod, MBA, Royal Roads University’s vicepresident of marketing, recruitment and business development, looks forward to furthering Royal Roads’ position both domestically and internationally.

“It’s very exciting to have programs that stand alone in the province and are also considered unique across Canada and internationally,” McLeod says. “In terms of the delivery, designed to accommodate professionals currently working in their fields, Royal Roads also provides a more collaborative, team-based model.

With the meals, housekeeping, utilities, and security all included residents have time for planned activities with each other. West Shore Lodge is always full so we have just opened up 12 more suites to increase our wonderful family. Patricia began her career working at 15 years old at the Empress Hotel. At the front desk Patt interacted daily with guests and senior residents living in the Empress. In those days the Empress Hotel was the “Supportive Living Apartments” for seniors. It provided an apartment, meals, housekeeping, afternoon tea and security in a lovely setting. That love of the dowagers took Patt to Beechwood Village in Sidney BC where for 10 years she was the Recreational Therapist, planning all activities. When Ken Clapham made the decision to build West Shore Lodge, Patt was hired for the management position and started during the construction

period. This gave her the unique position of deciding décor, including all paint & furnishings in the building. Since then, Patt has been the Operations Manager, along with Resident Manager Stephen Robards, to provide care and all aspects of services to the seniors. In the 9 years that Patt has been at West Shore, she has welcomed some of the most incredible seniors. Here they love to laugh, dress up, party, play and dine with others, but still have their privacy. This generation has gone through wars, depression, deaths and still contribute to the wellness of others. “We may not be the Empress Hotel but the atmosphere is the same—GRAND! So the relevance of the programs is always a top consideration as the programs are developed and nurtured.” Third, there’s the strong brand loyalty that people have to Royal Roads with more than 14,000 graduates living across Canada and around the world. “The support from our alumni is overwhelming,” McLeod says. “All of our alumni talk about the transformative experience they had at Royal Roads and that energy is infectious. Word of mouth is still a very important marketing tool for us.” When Royal Roads president Allan Cahoon announced McLeod’s appointment he noted her reputation for being action-oriented. “Her track record at Thompson Rivers University indicates that she will greatly enhance our capacity to attract working professionals to our integrated and applied programs,” Cahoon said. McLeod is excited by the possibilities in her new role and the university has set ambitious recruitment targets of 35 per cent growth in domestic enrolment and 50 per cent growth in international students, plus additional growth in offshore international partnerships where the university would be working with partners abroad to jointly deliver Royal Roads programs. Among the current international initiatives being pursued is a goal of offering the Master’s in Environment and Management in China in co-operation with a Chinese university. There is a new agreement in place to offer a disaster

and emergency management program to Chinese government officials. It’s also the first year for a joint Master’s in educational leadership in China that welcomed 22 Chinese teachers to the campus for six months this past summer. An added value from these kinds of partnerships is the economic opportunities it can bring to places like Victoria and the West Shore communities. Domestic partnerships include initiatives with the Fairmont hotel chain and the Canadian Medical Association, plus a recent agreement with the University of California at Riverside that offers an opportunity for students of tourism and communication programs to study for a semester in the U.S. and potentially complete an internship with Disney. On the local front, McLeod is also looking forward to ongoing collaborations with First Nations that would allow the university to build on each other’s strengths. Certainly attracting people to Royal Roads doesn’t seem to be a challenge. “The post-secondary sector has become aggressive in its marketing these past several years as the mathematical reality of demographics has taken hold,” says McLeod. “The product we are offering not only resonates with mid-career professionals, but it also resonates with the market sector that provides us with the most opportunities for growth. “The challenge we have is to tell our story, which is one of innovation and responsiveness to the needs of the work force. That’s unfamiliar territory for most publicly funded universities; it isn’t unfamiliar territory for Royal Roads.”

Dr. Natasha Kipot

I fell in love with the ability to help people... A chance conversation with a friend at a Christmas party set Dr. Natasha Kipot on the road to chiropractic. Then on the wait-list for nursing school, that simple conversation sent her to a chiropractor to learn more. “I fell in love with the concept and the ability to help people naturally and make a change in their lives as a doctor!” Today, more than 10 years later and a graduate of Western State Chiropractic College in Portland Ore., Dr. Kipot is a member of Royal Oak Chiropractic Natural Health, an integrated health clinic with chiropractic, massage, acupuncture and laser therapy, a collective group co-treating patients “to fast-track issues and provide optimal health benefits,” she explains.

LASER TREATMENT (LILT) LILT gives a jump-start to the body’s natural healing process by delivering energy to the tissues. The result is increased blood supply and accelerated healing time. This dynamic emerging technology utilizes superluminous and laser diodes to irradiate abnormal tissue. These are particles of energy that are absorbed by a variety of molecules within the cell (ligament, tendon, skin etc), a process which initiates new blood vessels, removal of scar tissue, decreasing inflammation and many more positive physiological responses. In essence, light energy is converted into biochemical energy penetrating up to 4cm in depth thus allowing us to work in structures most therapies cannot reach. The result - normal cell function is restored. Who will benefit? repetitive stress injury bulging/herniated discs carpal tunnel syndrome osteoarthritis rotator cuff tear bursitis sprain/strain plantar fasciitis temporo-mandibular joint dysfunction rheumatoid arthritis

Her treatment encompasses soft tissue work, whether using trigger point therapy or acupressure points, stretching, rehabilitation and preventative exercises as well as nutritional survey, and manipulating problematic areas requiring work. “The more you know about your body, the more you understand the importance of self-care before the inevitable breakdown,” she explains, encouraging clients to “ask as many questions as many times as you need in order to get the answers your looking for!”

Victoria’s women through the decades

Kirsten Sweetland

A

t just 22, world-class triathelete Kirsten Sweetland is already a familiar name to many in Greater Victoria. Originally from Parksville, Sweetland moved with her family to Victoria, where she has been able to continue training in the sport she began at just six-years-old. Among her career highlight to date was winning the World Junior title in 2006, but she hopes to add to that success with qualifying for the 2012 London Olympics next year. Sweetland enjoys spending time with her family and friends and when not training, enjoys cooking and baking, music, crafts and learning French. “It’s good to have stimulating yet restful things do in the time away from training,” she says.

Black Press: What do you like about being a woman? Kirsten Sweetland: I like to be able to represent women in sport which not too long ago didn’t even exist! It’s cool to be an ambassador that way. BP: If you weren’t a triathlete, what would you be doing? KS: I have always wanted to be a chiropractor but my other sport passion as a kid was figure skating, so one of the two – maybe both! BP: What have you learned as you mature that you would like to have been able to share with a “younger you?” KS: Patience. Forcing things does not speed up the process; quite the opposite! BP: The one thing you’d like to do better? KS: I would still like to be a bit more

relaxed and patient. I’m relaxed on the start line but it’s the day to day process I’m working on. BP: Your guilty pleasure? KS: Too many sweets and the Family Channel. BP: The one thing you’d never be without? KS: My bumble bee necklace from my mom and my NormaTec MVP. BP: Your proudest achievement? KS: World Cup win in Mooloolaba, Australia over the World Champion of ‘09 which was my first comeback race after a long bout of injury. BP: For what traits would you like to be remembered? KS: I’d like to think I could be remembered as being generous and thoughtful. Also hopefully modest.

O

ne half of the father-anddaughter team that runs Accent Inns, president and CEO Mandy Farmer is both a thirdgeneration Victorian, and the third generation to run her family business. Passionate about community, Farmer sits on a number of boards including Tourism Victoria, Royal Roads Centre for Entrepreneurship and CAFE, the Canadian Association of Family Enterprise, while also working with Go2 Human Resources speaking to high school students about careers in tourism. Recognizing her many achievements – and still while in her 30s – Farmer was recently named one of Business in Vancouver’s Top 40 Under 40. A true Vancouver Islander, Farmer spends her spare time outdoors, either on her mountain bike or with her two young children.

Black Press: What do you like about being a woman? Mandy Farmer: Wearing a sassy frock instead of a boring business suit. BP: What have you learned as you mature that you would like to have been able to share with a “younger you?” MF: First, dream it (let your imagination run wild); second, map it out and do your research (to the very last detail); third, do it, now (I mean right NOW! ebra Morse has an eclectic professional background that includes working as a legal secretary, llama trainer, artificial intelligence research assistant and more recently as a social entrepreneur. She’s currently the director of the Organic Islands Festival and Sustainability Expo and a facilitator/ trainer in conflict resolution, compassionate communication and collaborative decision making for organizations. She lives in Victoria with her husband and daughter and enjoys visiting farmer’s markets and performing stand up comedy. Black Press: What do you like about being a woman? Deb Morse: Well, I’ve noticed that most wars are started by men. So what I like about being a woman is that when we’re depressed we eat or go shopping. Men invade another country. BP: Your proudest achievement? DM: Adopting my daughter from China and rais-

ing her. She’s eight-years-old and I’m very proud of her resilience and joie de vie. BP: The one thing you’d like to do better? DM: Celebrating my successes and asking this question is giving me the chance to do that. This year I had a double header: I won the CRD 2010 EcoStar Award for Community Environmental Leader and I performed stand-up comedy live on stage to help launch the Stand Up for Mental Health program in Victoria. BP: What have you learned as you mature that you would like to have been able to share with a “younger you”? DM: Don’t waste time trying to get back to your original weight. I tried for a long time and I’m nowhere near 7 pounds, 6 ounces. BP: How do you find balance in your life? DM: When I ‘believe’ in something and feel passionate, I bite off way more than I can chew. So either I need a bigger mouth or I have to learn portion control.

The Magic Wand Project is planning a HUGE spring themed clothing, shoe and accessory exchange to raise funds to purchase new items for grad. The Magic Wand Project is a non-profit organization that is run by an amazing team of dedicated volunteers. It was started in 2001 by Elizabeth Surerus and a friend when they realized there was a need for affordable graduation dresses in Victoria. Not all graduates can afford the costs associated with attending their graduation or prom, but everyone should have the chance to attend their ceremonies in style. Students come from many different backgrounds: some have single parents for whom money is stretched, others are exchange students who need help with Canadian graduation customs, and some students come to Magic Wand just to borrow attire and to ‘reuse and recycle’. Magic Wand has grown over the years and now outfits both young women and men with new or gently used gowns, tuxedos, shoes and accessories, charging just a small fee for dry-cleaning. To date, the Magic Wand Project has helped over 500 students on Southern Vancouver Island attend their graduation ceremonies in style!

Over the next two months gather your gently used, clean, up-to-date clothing, shoes, etc. In Jan. bring your donations to the venue*. Tickets $15 or $10 if you drop your items off prior to the event. Bring your friends and help out a good cause at the same time. All proceeds go to helping youth in your community. We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all of the people who have volunteered for Magic Wand over the years: Yvonne - eight years of alterations! Capital City Tuxedo at 626 Courtney Street – the only tuxedo rental shop in Victoria with stock on site and same day service. Grad Central - new location at 1211 Wharf Street. K

aren Morgan, Executive Director, Saanich Peninsula Hospital Foundation, grew up in Toronto, heading west first to Winnipeg for business school, and then to the lower Mainland. Ten years ago, the Hospital Foundation position drew Morgan to the Island. The mother of two daughters, now in their 20s, and fundraiser extraordinaire for the community hospital, Morgan enjoys the challenges and rewards that come with both roles. Her proudest achievement? “I’d like to tell you that it’s my 10 years with the Foundation, as I am very proud of what we have built. But really my proudest achievement is that I have raised two fine young women. It took a lot more strength than I knew I had to get through the tough times, but they’re great people and I’m proud to call them my friends.

work. Being able to care passionately about what you’re doing, and being able to combine that with intellectual rigour, has given me a great deal of satisfaction.

Black Press: What do you like about being a woman? Karen Morgan: When I was in business school, I was told that I had to “be less emotional…less female” and I worked diligently to be the rational business person. My career path since, which has resulted in part from opportunities presented to me as a woman with business training, has allowed me to incorporate my more “feminine” side into my

BP: What do people look to you for guidance about? KM: More than anything, I think people come to me for a sympathetic ear. I give advice about a lot of things – how to manage money, how NOT to make the mistakes I’ve made in life, how to get into fundraising, what are the politics of a certain situation, where the best washrooms are in major cities – but it isn’t always asked for.

BP: What have you learned as you mature that you would like to have been able to share with a “younger you?” KM: I would like to tell a “younger me” to not worry so much about getting settled in “real life.” Work hard, but travel more and take more risks. Have kids when you’re ready, not when the biological alarm goes off. Not that I would trade my daughters for anything, but I foolishly believed that my life wouldn’t change that much after having them. In reality, you never stop being a mother, and that means you forever make sacrifices (both large and small) to help them get established in life.

Women in Business PROFILE

Jennifer Blyth photo

BP: The one thing you’d like to do better? KM: Math. I tell people that I know enough accounting to make me dangerous. It’s a joke, mostly. Fortunately, the Foundation has a great Treasurer (who is a first-rate accountant), an assistant who can find that missing 10 cents at the end of the month, and an accountant who actually pulls together our statements. I just have to make sure everything ends up in the right accounts. Together we make a very good, and all-female, team. BP: Your guilty pleasure? KM: Rogers Victoria Creams… actually any kind of chocolate.

BP: What are the stressors in your life and how do you manage them? KM: There’s a long list of stressors: kids with problems, not enough time in the day, events…especially events. I try to focus on one task at a time and plow through, without spending time obsessing about the end goal. Then I go for a walk, listen to or play some music and have the occasional glass of wine. BP: The one thing you’d never be without? KM: Lip balm. Since the age of 10, I haven’t been able to leave the house without it.

‘Up-cycled’ jewellery works for South African children Linda Rogers’ latest project involves children in a South African school whose students are primarily orphans of the AIDS crisis. As Poet Laureate Rogers started a penpal relationship between the school and children here, and poems and stories have gone back and forth. “It became clear we had a bigger mandate to help with school supplies etc.,” she says. “My granddaughter Sofee (Rogers) had the idea of making Steampunk jewellery to raise funds.”

Today, the whole family is involved in making the unique Melting Point jewellery, sold at Verve Consignment on Government Street, which is waiving its percentage of money raised to support the school. The name Melting Point refers to the temperature at which metal melts and blends and where friendships are formed. The jewellery “up-cylces” old coins, stamps, gears, keys, cutlery, watch parts and mica to unique, trendy jewellery.

Local women making a difference

Victoria’s prominent women: the early years By Jennifer Blyth

A

s Black Press honours today’s many women in business, it’s a good time to also look back to yesterday’s notable women. The list of Victoria women involved in business and professional life reaches back to some of the city’s earliest residents, including one of its most prominent – Joan Dunsmuir. When Robert Dunsmuir died just shy of completing his family’s architectural masterpiece, Craigdarroch Castle, the coal baron’s vast business transferred not to his two sons but to his wife, says local historian John Adams, from Discover the Past walking tours. Though the decision was not without some controversy, the fact remains, at the end of 19th century, Joan Dunsmuir found herself at the forefront of the Victoria business community. “She inherited the business from her husband and she ran it for many years.” On a smaller scale, Hannah Maynard ran a downtown photography studio. In addition to her studio portraits, she also developed a threemirror technique for photographing individuals for the police department that allowed the suspect to be seen from all sides. Other creative areas of her work involved annual collages of all the babies she had photographed in the previous year and “living statuary,” where she photographed people to look as though they were statues, Adams says. “She has become quite well known and she probably was a leading figure in the business world,” Adams suggests. Harriet Carne arrived in Victoria with her

husband, Fred, by way of the Cariboo. Harriet acquired the Angel Hotel – on what is now Langley Street – and as a Methodist and member of the Women’s Christian Temperance movement, ran it as a “dry” hotel. “People said she wouldn’t make a go of it, but she did,” Adams says. Victoria is also home to Canada’s oldest Chinatown, though in the early years, very few of its residents were female, Adams notes. Among the prominent early women was Seto Chang An who in 1893 married Lee Mong Kow, the founding principal of the Chinese Public School. In 1910 they were one of the first families to move out of Chinatown, to where McCall’s Funeral home stands now, Adams says. Seto Chang An played an interesting social role in Victoria as she regularly welcomed the English society ladies to her home, where her daughter, Ida, entertained on the piano. A little later on, between the wars, Marguerite Spratt was at the helm of the Victoria Machinery Depot, which operated two plants – one near the Point Ellice Bridge and the other at Ogden Point. “Her husband, Charles Spratt, died in the 1930s and she took over the full management of the company,” especially significant during the Second World War when the company would have been heavily involved in the war effort. Before the Art Gallery took up residence in Rockland, the Spencer Mansion was home to the Spencer family, including Sarah Spencer, of the David Spencer Ltd. department stores. Sarah never married but had served overseas during the First World War with the Canadian Field Comforts Division. Back home, she also

Seto Chang An with her family, in a mural on Chinatown’s Fisgard Street presided over the Victoria Symphony Society. “A few of the brothers went on to assume management positions but during the late 1940s, Sarah took over the Victoria store,” until all the Spencer stores were sold to the T. Eaton Company, Adams says. Later, “she was the one who gave the family home to the Art Gallery to form its first permanent home.” And then there were Victoria’s “shady ladies,” including Stella Carroll who arrived in town to buy a Broad Street brothel, on the two top floors

of the Duck Building, and already “a going concern.” Stella “ran it as a rather premier parlour house,” then, in 1905, with city council trying to clean up Broad Street, Stella bought a building in the 600 block of Herald Street – what later became the Taj Mahal restaurant – and moved her establishment there. Ever the entrepreneur, Stella also bought a second property on the Gorge, near the Tillicum Bridge, dubbed “Rockwood.” (Learn more about Stella in Linda Eversole’s book, Unrepentant Madam, Adams suggests.)

International journey explores life at 50 By Jennifer Blyth

“I

t literally came to me in a dream,” says local author Donna Lynch, asked about the concept for her recent book, 50ish, A journey to 50 countries in 50 weeks interviewing women in their 50s. Lynch’s mother was diagnosed with cancer on the author’s 50th birthday, and through the course of turning 50, of helping her mom through the terminal illness, and life in general, the avid traveller – laying awake worrying one night, unable to sleep – realized she had already visited 43 countries in her life. “I had never counted before,” she recalls. “And I literally woke up the next morning and said, ‘This is what I’m going to do.’” The result is a terrific book that is both a unique mix of travelogue and exploration of the women she met in the course of her travels, including “amusing tales, compelling interviews and interesting travel ideas,” she says. “It is a travel book as much as a book about women.” Throughout are wonderful photos documenting the many people met and places visited. Born in Victoria, Lynch didn’t leave the Island until she was 16, but once she started, she hasn’t stopped. Her first four-month trip to Europe ended up lasting almost a year and, and after that, two-week vacations just never seemed enough to fully explore the world. Five summers working as a poker, black jack and roulette dealer in up north in Dawson City financed trips to Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and a safari to seven East African countries. Then came a three-month tour of South

America and another European tour, plus two Mediterranean cruises. “I like to see new things and I like to experience new things; even at home I do that,” Lynch says. The prospect of meeting other women in other countries who were also in their 50s and of actually interacting with them, rather than simply sight-seeing, seemed like a great way to work through her grief “and grasp being 50 in a positive way,” the author’s website explains. Before setting off, an email to all her friends led her to 11 future “interviewees;” the rest she met along the way. Among the questions Lynch asked the women were: • How long did you know your husband prior to marrying? • How old were you when you got married? • What is the level of your parents education? What was your level of education? What is your children’s level of education? • Is religion a big part of your life? • Where else have you lived? • Do you have menopausal symptoms? • Do you feel your life is better than your parents’? • Can you describe yourself? • Are you where you thought you would be at 50? • Are you happy? The aim of the book was to offer an interesting snapshot of the countries travelled and some of the women making their home there, explains Lynch, who approaches her subject in an easy, accessible manner. “There is no huge conclusion. It’s a story about the trip and the

Author Donna Lynch with Kansci, her “interviewee” in Nepal. women I met.” Meeting the women, though, whether it was in a tiny collection of homes in the middle of the desert or high in the mountains of Nepal, adds another dimension to the journey. “I think for me, it made it more real that we are a global community,” Lynch says. “I now have friends in many, many places.” In choosing her countries, Lynch aimed for

those she hadn’t visited before and secondly, “to follow the sun.” “Butan was high on my list because it hasn’t been open to tourists for very long and it was one of my favourites,” she recalls. Among her favourite days was in Nepal, where during the course of a cyclo ride, she learned the driver’s wife was in her 50s; together they travelled 90 minutes along a bad road to their village, one not many foreigners visit, and with their son interpreting, Lynch asked her questions. “I was able to see how the villagers of Nepal actually live. When we arrived, his wife was feeding the goats and cows and sweeping out the barn, which was actually part of the main house,” Lynch recalls. “After all her chores, she prepared me a delicious lunch on the open fire on her dirt kitchen floor. “Most importantly, I met many amazing people who shared their lives and life stories with me. Women who agreed to answer my questions after only meeting me for a few minutes and some who I was fortunate enough to spend time more with. I was humbled by many of the women who answered ‘yes’ when asked if they were happy, knowing how little they had and how hard they struggle to help themselves and their families.” As part of the journey, Lynch, with good friend Joanne Hunston, also her Canadian interviewee, held fundraisers, collecting more than $3,500 that Lynch was able to donate to several causes she came across through her journey, including a school in Laos and several restaurants in Vietnam that worked with street children. Penny has eighteen years teaching experience in both public and private schools; and when she left the classroom she was drawn to Sylvan because it allowed her to remain involved in education in a personal and positive way. “Sylvan was started by teachers,” says Penny, “it is staffed by teachers, and in our case, it is owned by teachers – teachers who have one common goal, to help children achieve success at school.”

Sylvan focuses on ensuring children have the skills to go back to the classroom and raise their standards independently.

Business of Business Cont. from Page 13 think it’s imperative that we do that.” While Ceglarz has been successful in business, it has come as the result of considerable hard work. She, her husband and daughter had been vacationing outside Poland when martial law was declared in the country back in 1981. Making the decision not to return, the next question became: Where to go? Deciding on Canada, the immigration process brought the family to Victoria, but with very few resources as they’d had to leave virtually everything in Poland. While Ceglarz had a masters degree in law and administration from Poland, they weren’t transferable here; plus, she spoke no English. Learning the language came first, and Ceglarz immersed herself in it – little notes with English words dotted the walls and ceiling of their apartment, she remembers – so that in less than two months, she could communicate. Next came UVic and part-time studies, while working and raising her

“It’s extremely important that you have a great team of people. You can have the most beautiful buildings, the most beautiful art, but if you don’t have good people, you have no business.” – Janina Ceglarz daughter, to earn her Canadian degree. “In life, I think it’s important that we set the goals high. We work hard to achieve these goals and sometimes we have to sacrifice something.” That same drive is carried forward in her approach to business: Ceglarz works hard – and efficiently – and she expects the same of her staff; at the same time, it’s essential to reward employees for their efforts, she emphasizes. In business, “it’s extremely important that you have a great team of people. You can have the most beautiful buildings, the most beautiful art, but if you don’t have good people, you have no business.”

That means taking the time to hire correctly from the start, treating staff well and, while expecting a dedicated effort, appreciating how hard they work. For Ceglarz, it also means being accessible. “My day is just crazy busy, but I have an opendoor policy so every employee can speak to me in confidence to help resolve any problem. I have to find the time because for me, it’s important.” It’s also essential to find balance between her work day and her time away from the office with family, friends and her husband of 38 years. “I must have balance, but that comes from experience,” she acknowledges.
