What is Step-Up to Uni?

Step-Up is a scheme to introduce you to university. We’ll invite you to come along to a number of events – completely free of charge – where you can spend time on campus, hearing about what students’ lives are like, finding out what studying at uni is like first-hand, learning skills that will help you do better in your exams, making friends from all over the country, and getting a real flavour of how much fun it is to be a student.

The pupils loved it and so did I! The performance poets were both ace...and the giant Jenga went down really well. Dylan Moore, Teacher on English Revision Day

Our events can be anything from getting help with your GCSEs to university course tasters. Our GCSE support days include Maths and English Revision, Welsh, French, German, and Spanish Practice Days. University tasters tend to focus on subjects you might not study at school such as Law, Journalism, Psychology, Marine Geography and many more. Some of our Yr 12 events include a social event such as bowling and Slam Poetry, while others may include an overnight stay so you’ll get a chance to live in a hall of residence student flat!

Uni’s great because it sets you up for a better job and you make loads of new friends. I love it. Ben Keen, a 3rd-year student of Economics at Cardiff University

What’s all the fuss about uni? Studying at uni will help you get a job: it’s as simple as that. If you want to be a doctor, lawyer, or a teacher, a degree from a university is vital. Many other jobs, now, also require Higher Education degrees. With a degree, it’s also easier to get a promotion to take your career to the next level. This means you have more options to do what you want to do. In terms of money, graduates earn on average £120,000 over a career more than those without a degree. It can be more than that. Although going to uni requires an initial investment, the return on that investment is well worth it! The most important aspect of uni is that you’re happy with what you do. Uni is all about choices, and opening up more options for you so you have the choice.

You’ve probably heard the saying, ‘The friends you make at uni stay with you for life’. That’s the great thing about uni – you meet so many new people, and have the opportunity - possibly for the first time in your life – to live away from home and gain some independence. There are also sports and other activity societies that you can get involved with such as Extreme Sports, Christian Union, the Real Ale Society, and many, many more!

All in all, Cardiff Uni is a great place to study, and 60% of students say the freedom, independence and social life you get in uni is what they like best.
