of Hollywood films as well as stage productions to his name. West Australian director Adam Mitchell’s work includes the wonderful production of When the Rain Stops Falling, and Damon Lockwood’s Horse Head was just awarded the inaugural Rome Fringe Festival Prize.

We will leave you gasping for breath at a fast paced Australian comedy that sold out before it opened in Melbourne; a modern American classic, a heartbreakingly beautiful new American play fresh from Broadway, and a play with music that took the Edinburgh Festival by storm.

John Howard joins Tim Winton in another stunning collaboration, the much loved Jenny Davis, doyenne of WA theatre, makes her debut on the Heath Ledger stage, while Pete Rowsthorn, of Kath & Kim fame, finds time to come and play with us. And Brendan Hanson, fresh from proving he’s got plenty of the triple threat on the TV show I Will Survive, shows us that he sings, dances, and makes us laugh.

In celebrating the word, we bring to you some of our favourite writers of the last 100 years. Oscar Wilde, Arthur Miller, Joanna MurraySmith, Tim Winton, Jon Robin Baitz, David Greig and Stephen Adly Guirgis. Their plays sparkle, dance and weave their way through sex, betrayal, heartbreak and lots of laughter. The directors come with accolades galore: Academy Award nominee Bruce Beresford is one of Australia’s iconic directors, with a swag

THE IMPORTANCE OF

OS CA R W I LD E 06

“In matters of grave importance, style, not sincerity is the vital thing.” Oscar Wilde In Oscar Wilde’s most famous play, the dandy Algernon and dapper Jack are best friends, who, unbeknownst to each other, both employ different identities in London and the countryside. When Jack proposes to Algernon’s cousin Gwendolen, and Algernon falls for Jack’s ward Cecily, both do so using the pseudonym Ernest.

Amidst mistaken identities and giddy confusion towers Gwendolen’s mother, the imposing Lady Bracknell, as a paragon of Edwardian propriety, who refuses to be anything but earnest! This masterful comedy of manners, considered to be the wittiest play in the English language, sparkles with classic bon mots and brilliant dialogue that will lift your spirits. “A masterpiece of honed wit and formal perfection.” The Telegraph

Willy Loman spent his entire life as a travelling salesman chasing his fortune and never succeeding. Now, suffocated by debt, discarded by his boss and losing his grasp on reality, his hopes continue to rest on his son Biff, the golden boy who never lived up to the promise he showed in high school. In an unforgiving present, Willy grasps at the straws of a past he idealises and refuses to let go of false dreams for his son, despite the fact that Biff, who once worshipped his father, has come to reject him. Death of a Salesman is one of the great American plays of the twentieth century,

dissecting the country’s obsession with the American Dream and creating one of the most memorable portrayals of a father-son relationship in contemporary theatre. Awards for the play include the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award - Best Play, the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Tony Award for Best Play and Tony Award, Author - Arthur Miller. “Every audience member irrespective of their background, will likely see something of themselves, their fathers, their families and their world in this masterpiece.” The Hollywood Reporter

JOANNA MURRAY-SMITH 10

FORTY-somethings Sam and Tom are not just business partners, but good friends, as are their wives, Madeleine and Stella. Their privileged lives of business deals, dinners out and squash games are the usual urbane rituals of the middle-class. But as boredom sneaks up them, each of the four embarks on a thrilling adventure, finding their destinies on a collision course with the beguiling young strangers, Ray and Rose. The result is a web intricate and far-reaching, where erotic thrill-seeking becomes an intense flirtation with catastrophe. Love, seduction, envy, desire and revenge are the strands that wrap around their shiny lives... and it all starts very simply on day one, in the evening, in a hotel room.
