AUTUMN / WINTER 2013
T
hat’s how I started, looking out the window and finding beauty in that view. I decided to recreate it - in each small gesture that leads to the creation of a sofa. Handmade. The word elegance has always fascinated me. Ever since I had a view of a Palladian villa from the window of my workshop; an example of beauty, harmony and balanced form that continues to be the essence of my work. It was right there I started producing sofas, making them by hand in that small workshop in the province of Vicenza, not that far from the romance of Venice. It was 1977 and I could feel the full, positive influence of that view, of this my beautiful land Veneto, in the North-East of Italy. I liked the idea of seeing the value of beauty and harmony grow. Of turning these qualities into new objects. Of sharing them, giving them to the world. I really loved what I was doing; that search for perfection, but taking my time and looking at everything. So I opened my factory and set up one of the most innovative companies on the Italian design scene, knowing that I’d be working in the same way I was in my workshop. Not even mass demand could rush the steps to creating a sofa, which had its own timescales, requiring equal amounts of dedication and passion. I was sure that this passion of mine would take my sofas far. And that’s how it was - I’ve seen them in shop windows in New York, Moscow, Hong Kong, Miami, and Beirut. I’ve also seen them among the pages of the most important fashion and design magazines, such as Interni, Wallpaper, Harper’s Bazaar and many more. And I’ve seen them included twice in items selected for the Compasso d’Oro award. And me, I’ve never stopped exploring the world for them, travelling to find new colours, new materials, working with some of the greatest contemporary designers. Learning all the time - because beauty is something I live like a long, wonderful journey. I still crave elegance. We need it, nowadays more than ever. And those who know how to bring it to life. It’s been 35 years since I started in my workshop. And now I feel ready to start making handmade sofas again. Nowadays it’s so hard to think of a craft that takes up so much time just imagining how it will turn out, imagining its shape and creating its very being. Instead I decided to start a new phase using the word that had inspired my work so much as a starting point - elegance.
It’s no coincidence that my new design is called Black Tie, because it originates from my need to find and create elegance, although it also originates from my personal belief that making a sofa demands the best – the best suit – to use a metaphor which has become my trademark – from those who plan it, design it, and create it. I still believe this today - elegance has to be a way of thinking, long before it becomes an object. I feel Black Tie pays homage to true beauty and elegance, the fascination of equilibrium, and handmade items. Things which are so difficult to find in a sofa nowadays. Black Tie has originated from my desire to match elegance and design with quality using the human touch - that Italian craftsmanship which unfortunately is disappearing, getting swallowed up by market forces. I want to offer customers who share my desire for elegance a sofa which has been designed and tailor-made. Something completely outside mass market rules, which demands the best materials and most exclusive upholstery. The way a Black Tie sofa has been designed and made means it can’t be bought just anywhere; it can only be bought from highly select furniture shops and interior designers, which I’ve selected personally. It’s been a meticulous choice, governed by my desire to find the same quality that I guarantee when I design and make a sofa, in anybody who is selling it. Working as I’ve chosen to work means the masses can’t belong to the Black Tie world. Handcrafting requires time, dedication, and even more time than was imagined at the beginning. It doesn’t matter as long as you feel what you’re working to achieve counts for something. Black Tie sofas have to be produced in limited numbers. No more than ten sofas per day which I always check personally, one by one, because experience and taste are in my eyes first and foremost. This is my way of giving substance to the word exclusiveness.
