THE OVERLAND TRACK IS A 65KM MULTIDAY HIKE THROUGH THE HEART OF TASMANIA. CARVED OUT BY GLACIAL MOVEMENTS OVER 2 MILLION YEARS THIS UNIQUE WORLD HERITAGE LISTED AREA IS HOME TO RUGGED MOUNTAIN RANGES, LAKES, ALPINE FORESTS, WATERFALLS, MARSH LAND PLAINS AND DEEP VALLEY RAIN FORESTS. WITH BREATH TAKING SCENERY, AN AMAZING VARIETY OF FAUNA AND WILDLIFE THIS CHALLENGING TRACK IS FOR MANY THE JOURNEY OF A LIFETIME. DURING THE PEAK SEASON FROM OCTOBER 1 TO MAY 1 PEOPLE MUST WALK THE OVERLAND NORTH TO SOUTH (FROM CRADLE VALLEY TO LAKE ST. CLAIR) AND YOU MUST BOOK IN ADVANCE.
BE PREPARED TO EXPERIENCE ALL TYPES OF WEATHER DURING THE TRIP. ITS NOT UNCOMMON TO HAVE FOUR SEASONS IN ONE DAY ON THE TRACK. HAVING WATER PROOF OUTERWEAR AND BOOTS ARE ESSENTIAL ALONG WITH GAITERS FOR THE MUDDIER SECTIONS. WARM CLOTHES FOR NIGHT TIME AS IT DOES GET COLD ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE CAMPING. SUN PROTECTION IS ALSO NEEDED FOR HOT DAYS AT ALTITUDE.
PREPARATION: GENERAL PACK FITNESS IS A MUST FOR THE TRACK. IT’S ADVISED TO BE ACCUSTOMED TO CARRYING A HEAVY PACK (17KG - 20KG) FOR LONG PERIODS AND SOME MULTI-DAY HIKING / CAMPING EXPERIENCE WOULD BE AN ADVANTAGE. KNOWING HOW YOUR EQUIPMENT WORKS SHOULD BE AN ESSENTIAL PART OF YOUR PREPARATION BEFORE YOU LEAVE.
ACCOMMODATION: THE HUTS ALONG THE TRACK HAVE WATER TANKS AND TOILET FACILITIES. SOME, BUT NOT ALL HAVE HEATERS THAT CAN OPERATE WHEN THE TEMPERATURE DROPS. TENTS ARE COMPULSORY ON THE TRACK SO EVEN IF YOU EXPECT TO STAY IN THE HUTS YOU MUST TAKE YOUR TENT. AROUND THE HUTS ARE TENT PLATFORMS. THE HUTS CAN FILL UP FAST AND ITS NOT UNCOMMON TO FIND AFTER A SIDE TRIP THAT WHEN YOU ARRIVE THERE IS NO ROOM IN THE HUT. EVERYONE IS WELCOME TO SHELTER AND COOK IN THE HUTS WITH PLENTY OF BENCHES TO SHARE AT MEAL TIMES.
TERRAIN: SOME OF THE TRACK HAS PLANKING, DUCK BOARD AND CORDWOOD. BUT EXPECT LARGE SECTIONS OF NATURAL SURFACES LIKE ROCK, GRAVEL, MUD AND TREE ROOTS. SOME STEEP UPHILL SECTIONS AND NATURAL STEPPED DESCENTS CAN BE HARD ON YOUR KNEES. HIKING POLES ARE A GOOD INVESTMENT.

When you’re out for the day you can carry all the water you’ll need with you but for overnight and extended trips away from the car you’ll need to pick-up water along the way. When choosing a creek or river to collect water look on your map to see where the water has flowed from, if the water catchment area for that creek or river is all natural bush then the water should be safe to drink without treating, however if the catchment includes farmland or populated areas then the water should be treated before drinking. Water can be treated with purification tablets, filtered or by boiling.

> CHOOSING A BUSH CAMPSITE One of the great advantages of camping is the freedom of making your home away from home anywhere, within reason of course, but we are lucky in Australia and have many parks, reserves and forests that allow bush camping. A bush campsite generally won’t have any facilities so you’ll need to bring everything with you but you’ll also have the freedom to choose the perfect spot and really get away from it all! Look for a flat site large enough for your tent, slipping off your mat all night on a sloping site is no fun. Check for ant nests and clear away sticks and stones that may damage your tent floor. Check for trees above your tent site, gum trees are notorious for dropping branches so don’t camp to close. If you are planning to have a campfire set your tent up a safe distance away, preferably up wind.

> HOW TO MAKE A CAMPFIRE There’s nothing better than sitting around a campfire on a cold night with a bunch of mates telling tall stories and staring into the flames. Before you head off on your camping trip check whether campfires are allowed and check for fire bans. Also check the local rules for collecting wood, at popular campsites you may need to bring your wood with you. If there is already a fireplace at your campsite use it rather than making a new one If you are allowed to collect wood near your campsite pick up dead sticks and logs from the ground, don’t pull down live trees, it’s damaging to the environment and fresh, green wood won’t burn anyway.
You’ll need a mix of tinder (small twigs, and dead leaves), kindling (thin sticks) and larger logs. Start with the tinder, this can be helped along with some newspaper to get the fire going then add the kindling, once that’s alight add some bigger sticks and logs. If you are planning to cook on the fire it’s a good idea to get it started a while before you want to cook as it’s easier to cook once some of the wood has burnt down to coals compared with trying to cook over the flames.
