INTRODUCTION

Well here it is. Lb#07. I have a bittersweet taste in my mouth knowing that we put together the best LikeButter Mag yet, while finally accepting the reality that this will probably be the last Lb fakeskate issue ever made.

contributed to Lb Mag and the website. Even the fucktards that got banned ten times, or spammed the chat box all day, indeed brought perspective to our community. I appreciate all of it. I hope that everyone has learned as much as I have.

When starting to build this issue, I wanted to put EVERYTHING in. All the featured photos from the website. All the best graphics. Pictures from the best parks. Team features and multiple interviews. But when it came down to filtering through all of that content, I realized that the most important thing to convey was my appreciation for dramatic and beautiful skateboarding photography. That’s why the first Lb mag issue was created. It wasn’t about teams and e-dick sizes and cap builders and fake skate videos. It was about the photographer. One photographer worth mentioning is ValleyBoy. His skills behind the camera pushed me to dig deep and find the creative energy to make the last few issues. Without him, Lb would have grinded to a halt years ago. I owe him great thanks for challenging me be a better faketographer. Whether I succeeded or not is debatable, but one thing I know for sure - I am very proud of everything we have done with Lb. And by “we” I mean everyone who has

Okay enough of that. Dig into the mag. There is actually stuff to read this time. HTIO gives a great interview, and Cuz… yes fucking CUZ, wrote a hilarious, honest and enlightening article about what Skate has meant to him. It’s rad. And for the record, the Lb website isn’t going anywhere any time soon. It will be here. I will be here. We’ve also created a little community over at LikeButterMotorsport.com for those of you who appreciate car culture in the same ways you do skateboarding. Check it out. Thanks again to the entire fake skate community, Fluckit, MagicNarcosis, Cuz, and love ‘em or hate ‘em, EA for making LikeButter Magazine possible. Looking Forward, BladderBoy

H TIO CHAT AND SESH WITH

Thanks for taking a minute to talk with Lb. Long overdue. Yeah, of course. Anytime, man. I’ll never forget when I saw your 666 video. Thanks a lot, dude. Yeah, I guess I had my breakthrough with that video. Got a lot of love from that. That wasn’t your first solo. Yeah, that was my sixth one. Were the previous 5 under the name HTIO, or Granka? It’s always been H TIO. It’s just some people who like to call me Granka. It’s my nickname in real life. Back in my school-days I had a tendency to write random stuff on the school-tables and one day I wrote “HTIO” and then I just made it “H TIO”. “Tio” in Swedish means “ten”. The name never meant anything, I just thought it sounded cool. H TIO became my gaming-nickname and Granka remained my RL-nickname. 666 really stood out to me because it was some of the fastest skating I had seen up to that point. But you never seemed out of control. Has that always been your style? I grew into it. I tried being realistic be-

fore but I kinda became bored of skating that way so I started adding more speed to my stuff. And with more speed comes the chances of skating more big gaps and stuff like that. I’d imagine you started looking at obstacles in a different way at that point. I tried skating a bit faster and crazier back in S2 after watching Eflixxx and Stevland. But my mentality kind of reset when S3 came out. And after that my style developed to what people know me for today. Do you think the more open terrain in Port Carverton led you down that path? The open terrain didn’t have that much to do with it, I mostly wanted to do something new. I tried something new and really liked it. Did changing styles present any new challenges when filming? Of course. It’s harder to get a nice steady camera-flow through a line when it’s much faster. But it didn’t take that long to get used to it. But it’s also like I grew into it, one step at a time. I didn’t like switch my style overnight. I know you like to film in real life as well. Has filming in a virtual world affected the way you film in real life?

Has it changed your perspective? The fact that I film both in real life and in Skate has helped me on both sides. Filming in real life has helped me in fakeskating to get “realistic” filming for lines. Fakeskate-filming has helped me in real life with long lenses and angles like that, the ones when you get to be a little bit more creative and experimental with. The game almost becomes a tool for practicing techniques. Yeah, exactly! Film in the game, go try it outside! Too bad you can’t glitch your real camera save money on lenses. Haha, yeah. Another aspect of your videos that stands out to me is the dark, high-energy music... do you pick a song before you skate and film? Or do you make that decision when cutting the video? When I’m editing the video. I’ve always tried to match the music to the skating, so it brings out the best of the skating. Is there a song that you have been wanting to use, but just can’t make it work? It’s tempting to force a song into a video just because you like it. Children Of Bodom - Hate Crew Death-

roll. It’s my absolute favorite-song, but it’s so hard to edit to. And when it’s my favorite-song I don’t want it to be a victim of half-ass editing. I believe it was in OG Skate. Yeah, it was. It’s quite heavy. Finnish death metal :D Sounds like something I’d like. So when you are watching fakeskate videos, what do you look for? What kind of style do you most appreciate?

27

Mostly I like to watch “crazy” skating, intense skating. Like Stevland, Cookiesupporter, Perm, Demzilla and most of the Psychonaut-dudes. But I’m down with any skating. I also enjoy watching skaters like Emericaridr, Wiltzuh, Slamooh, Roke. Do you find that skating is most important in a video? Filming? Editing? The skating is most important of course,

the filming is very important too. Because shitty filming can make a good trick go bad. I don’t stress out that much on people’s editing. But good editing of course makes it a good watch. Just look at Cookie’s stuff. No film-burns or any of that stuff. He just skates like a beast, has medium editing and still makes good fucking videos. I remember back when I met you in october of 2010, you weren’t really interested in being on a team. A lot has changed since then. Tell me about how you became a member of DP. Well I’ve been really good friends with Cookiesupporter now for a while. You, me and he chatted the day I joined the site and like the next day me and he voice-chatted and became good friends. And I started getting a lot of love on my videos from Fallingskyline and he put in a good word for me at DP. Then I released my 10th solo “Number 10” and then Stevland approached me and asked me to join the team. I was down immediately, I loved the idea of being on DP because Stev has always been a huge inspiration for me and DP was the first team that I started to watch. I also wanted to be on a team with Cookie because he’s my homeboy :D Were you at all intimidated when you first joined DP, knowing the history of the team? Or were you confident that you could jump in and crush it on day 1? It was a bit sketchy in the beginning because I’ve always seen DP as like the kings of fakeskating, the ones that inspired so many and always made banging-ass videos. But then I thought if Stev wants me on the team, I really must be good enough to become one of them and not be considered as an outsider. Stev must have given you some confidence. Yeah, Stev is the coolest guy ever. Always sends me recommendations of mu-

sic and movies. He’s been sending me a lot of korean movies lately, I’m having some korean movie-phase going on right now. But he’s super cool. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a korean film. Action films? Romantic comedies? Korean action-movies and crime-movies (police-movies). Oldboy and I Saw The Devil are the best korean movies I’ve seen. Super good movies! How did you become sponsored by Baroque? Well Adda said that he was accepting people on the team and I asked if I could get on and he was cool with it. I wanted to get on because his artwork is super good and because I think he’s a super cool person. I really wanted to be on a team with him so now I ride for him. :D

34 Yeah the Stingray guys are super creative. Any collabs with them in the future? I don’t know. It would be cool to do another collabo with Gizzler. But time will tell. Anyone else you’d like to collab with? That you haven’t with already?

Cookiesupporter for sure, he’s my fucking homie. Stev would be cool to make a collabo with. A collabo with Eflixxx is a long time fantasy but I don’t know if he’s still active. Are there any new fakeskaters out there outside of DP that are impressing you? dudes have really been pushing the boundaries, trying to keep things fresh. Wiltzuh is really good. Skates really good and has a really cool editing-style. But I don’t know if he can be counted as one of the new guys. Indeed. Are there and CAPs out there that cater specifically to your style? What’s your favorite? When it comes to CAPs I usually whip out DC Embassy by FullyFL4RED00. I like that one a lot. Been skating that

one quite a lot of times. I’ll eventually come out with a CAP-video of that one.

because the skating was sooo good and he edited it perfectly.

Have you ever created a park?

Which reminds me, Lb grew so fast the team got kindof lost in the shuffle. Hopefully your still down to rep us as a secondary in the future.

I tried in the beginning of Skate 3 but then I figured that they were all shit so then I just put all my mind to skating and just focus on that. You can’t be amazing at everything HTIO That just wouldn’t be fair to the rest of us.

Of course I am, I’m still repping as hard as I can when I have the chance. I love seeing that logo in your vids. I get all warm and fuzzy.

Hahaha!

I feel you.

What video are you most proud of?

Whats your favorite trick?

My 7th solo “Root” because it had a crazy tempo all the way through, it was also the first one I made as a member of the Lb crew. My 10th solo of course because of me getting to join DP. Aaaaaaand, my collabo with Gizzler

Wow, that’s a hard question. Hmmm... when it comes to flips I really like nollie heels. When it comes to grind/slides I really enjoy crooks and bs nose/bs tail.

Favorite obstacle? Gaps, if that’s considered as a obstacle. Sure is. What’s the last trick you learned? Must be inward heels. I’m still working on getting a bit more pop on my hardflips because I wanna get some hardflip bs nose-action on some ledges. Is there a specific trick that you find challenging to the point of frustration? Feeble-grinds, I’m terrible at them. Hardflips during big gaps, because my pop on those suck. What’s your favorite kit setup. Even though I love Doppelgänger to death I would say Psychonaut-board

because they have so cool graphics, Independent-trucks, Spitfire-wheels and when it comes to shoes I really like the look of the Nike SB Janoskis. Clothing-wise... hmmmm... well Baroque obviously, sponsored duh. And Fourstar.

worked in real-life, what would you have drop in front of you right now?

What are your future goals for your fakeskate career?

Oh yeah, for sure.

To keep entertaining people with my skating and hopefully fulfill their expectations of me. Getting myself a pro model-board of course. And just keep enjoying skating and have fun. Can’t ask for much more that that. Look forward to seeing more from you man. You haven’t failed to deliver. Thanks a lot, dude. Finally - if the Object Dropper

Zooey Deschanel in an Audi A8. Ride off into the sunset.

Thanks for your time HTIO.

You Made It This… And I Thank You by Cuz Parry

An era is coming to an end…a period of my life that will forever be ensconced in magical memories. When Bladder asked me to dust off my old blogging duties and share a little piece for his mag to commemorate the “sunsetting” (gotta love that one…almost as good as “seasonal layoffs”) of a major piece of my professional and personal being, I said it’d be an honor. When it dawned on me that I actually had to give him something, my hunt and peck fingers froze and my brain got a bad case of swirling emotions paralysis. Cue the Streisand. “Memories”. True to form I decided to just spew out whatever randomness I can retrieve from my Skate memory bank consciousness…with a full legal disclaimer that it is sure to bore. You’ve been warned. Carry on. Where do I begin? Why don’t we begin by answering the question that really is the only reason you’re even reading this: When does Skate 4 come out? Tomorrow. There. Glad to have that out of the way. Ok…that might be a bit of a stretch. Once and for all…I don’t know anything about EA’s plans for the franchise. But, based on economics, the company’s perpetual employee bloodletting, and the fact that the majority of the amazing people that made Skate(s) have either moved on to other projects (and companies) or were “seasonally laid off”, I’d guess they have other priorities. The harsh reality for those of us who skate or are Skate enthusiasts is that the return on investment in resurrecting the franchise doesn’t make fiscal sense. Invest millions into blockbuster shooty, sporty, racing, whatever games or into something that pleases a solid minority? (And… minority we are. We think we are more because everyone we hang with is like us) Do the math. They did. We’re done. But that doesn’t mean that the team didn’t accomplish something monumental. We did. The fact that you are here, years after the game’s last release…means we did something right.

The fact that a couple kids recognized me at the skatepark the other day and asked if Skate 4 was a possibility…means we did something right. The fact that the lead designer for Red Dead Redemption told me they played Skate to get inspiration for how their horse riding should feel…means we did something right. The fact that you can actually have a style of skating and that there are so many sub-genres and ways to express yourself in Skate… means we did something right. The fact that our team still gets together and hangs out every Skate Patty’s Day, and that we all know we were part of a special slice of gaming and skateboarding culture…means we did something right. It’ a cool feeling to know how deeply we touched so many rad people (ummm…that sounds a tad pervy…gross). I am honored to have been a part of that, and truly grateful to all the fans, skaters and brilliant teammates that made such an experience possible. Blah, blah, blah. Here’s some random shit you likely don’t know and probably don’t care about the skate franchise. I actually did work on Skate. I wasn’t just some kook they hired to do shitty interviews and blogs. I was there from the beginning with J-Bomb and Scootie B when EA tasked our team with coming up with a Hawk killer. But enough of that self-serving shit. We knew had had something with controls when the smart guys came up with a text prototype for Flick-it. You would do a gesture with a controller, and it would simply tell you what you did. No animations…just words. J-Bomb, the Darkman, and I played endless games of text SKATE with that sucker. So fun. I always lost. (Imagine that, random flicking didn’t pay off). Our team ruled. No everyone didn’t skate. Of course not. That would be stupid because nothing would ever get done ;)…but everyone embraced the culture and respected what it was about. We worked fucking hard…really fucking hard…and played the same way. But, it was interesting to see just how many people had experienced that one summer or year when they did roll on the stuntwood. Those memories served us well as we tried to capture the feeling of skating. The intro movie shoots were all insane experiences. The amount of wrangling it takes to get a gaggle of pro skaters to their call times on a video shoot is unbelievable. Some highlights include: Dill getting lost in the women’s prison we shot Skate 2’s intro in. (I think they filmed a Charlie’s Angels there where the Angels got deloused…sweet!). Watching Gonz ad-lib his way through surgery…to Slayer!!!!! (We win!) Reda chatting up the hot nurse in the first intro by re-enacting the movie Billy Elliot. (Busenitz and I were

dying as he told her he choreographed the whole movie.) 4:30 (AM) wake up calls for Duffy and Braydon on Skate 3. (Ummm… maybe we should just charge through the whole night. Good idea!) Haslam jumping into the way of the ambulance when he assured the director he could do his own “stunt” in Skate 1. Spending an evening in the company of the mind of Marc Johnson. Watching Drehebol “act” as he put his seal of approval on a deck. Hell this reminiscing thing is overtaking my normal stream of randomness. Here goes more random snippets: Hawk gave us a slight stink eye when we were demoing the original Skate for Hosoi in the athlete’s lounge at the X-Games. Maybe he didn’t, but we did feel bad knowing that our shit was so tight and his was on the way out. For the record, he is awesome and so were the times we all had playing his game. Times change and things evolve. Hopefully someday, someone, anyone…will come along and give all us skaters another piece of awesome like 720 Air, Thrasher Skate And Destroy, THPS and Skate did. We deserve it. Alex Chalmers wins the excellence in audio capture award for getting towed up a sidewalk at 40 mph at 3 AM while having to avoid telephone poles and manhole covers. Had to get that authentic riding over cracks at speed sound. He is a Skate hero.

Chris Cole wins the “taking it on the chin with a ton of balls” award for his willingness to be our mo-cap guinea pig. He spent a good deal of time getting mo-cap balls attached to his face only to find out that we didn’t really need them. Shitty for him but comedic gold for the sophomoric “balls on face” jokes. Was lucky enough to witness Danny Way’s Hard Rock guitar bomb drop. Vegas got even weirder that weekend. Speaking of Vegas weirdness, imagine getting put up in the Palm’s by the Maloof Bros then going out with Braydon S to party at the off the strip dives where he first learned how to party when he was a kid. The charmed life continued for me when we were convincing various musicians to do score for the game. I mean what the hell was I doing visiting Cut Chemist at his house…partying with Z-Trip…rapping with Del about skating, games, and well, rap…eating sick burritos for lunch with Tommy G near the Deluxe offices in SF…drinking a long way from home in Brooklyn with the dude from Spank Rock (sp?)…or asking the legendary Mark Mothersbaugh to make something that sounded like good Devo meeting Joy Division???!!!! Holy shit...surreal life for sure. Apologies are in order for all the people that had to complete bowl contest challenges and listen to me blather on in typically incoherent Cuz fashion. Hey, give me a break, I was loaded. Speaking of loaded, thank god my aspiration to achieve Joose sponsorship didn’t come to fruition. Seems that shit might not be too healthy for you. But I do want to thank whomever it was that posted up my Joose graphic. Still run that graphic when I go OG… well, until tomorrow ;) And thanks to everyone that figured out work-arounds to create all the sick graphics we wished we could license but didn’t! Yes, that was Shane Heyl not The Boss. The Boss is pretty reserved and figured Shane would be funnier. The Boss sat in on the recording sesh and “directed” his Chicken Bone bro. On the subject of voice recording, it’s official, ask a pro skater what he would say if he saw something amazing happen and he would say…”sick”. The Don Rickles of skateboarding award goes to Reda. He definitely teaches people the value of having a thick skin….but in all

honesty….he’s a great guy. I just wish I had a copy of this startlingly obscene outtakes reel our audio guys compiled of Reda. Holy fucking shit it was funny. The real Shingo is fine, twelve years old now, and ripping. He has an afro that will soon give Clayfighter a run for his Afro money and he has the voice of Tina from Bob’s Burgers. Wait a minute. This exercise in excavating Skate memories is getting in the way of playing Skate with the homies (for a last time?) Hopefully online play remains so I can keep getting kicked from rooms where kids with day-glo everything and crappy graphics pester me to do Superman double corkscrew backflips at The SuperDuper Megalicious Park. Gonna wrap this up with some thanks... Thanks everyone. Skaters. Skateboarding. Fake Skateboarding. The Skate Team. You. Him. Them. Like I said, everyone. Skate was a surreal period of my somewhat surreally ordinary life. I will forever be indebted to all of you for making me feel so blessed. I can say without hesitation that I am proud to still be able to meet skaters at skateparks or spots and know that we didn’t fuck up skateboarding.

Because at the end of the day…that’s all I care about…skating. Keep Rolling, Cuz PS… I’ve got loads of stories to share. If Bladder ever does this again…who knows? Maybe I can puke more out. [belch]
