e s o l c n o s k c a j h t A Sit down wi ion! p m a h c g n i f r u s Sup 2013 Australian ess otos: Matt Burg Interview and Ph

In incredibly testing conditions, some would say perfect for a 20km downwinder, Jackson Close came out victorious in small, onshore slop, claiming the 2013 ‘Be The Influence’ Australian SUP Crown. Matt Burgess managed to have a quick chat with Jackson after the final. Jackson you must be stoked coming first in the most testing conditions for a contest! “Yeah a win’s always you know, always so happy after a win, and ahh, when it’s in stuff as bad as it is today you’re even more happy because you’ve beaten so many of the lighter guys in this sort of stuff. Winning the Aussie titles is one of the best titles to win. Very Happy.”

How was surfing in the earlier rounds, did you find it a struggle at all? “Um, not really. The waves are small, but cleaner on the first day and fun. Just today was abit harder so I took abit bigger board out, 5L more, making it much better for these conditions. Just gets me floating abit more.

The talent that’s coming through, the depth the Aussies have, Brim Brim (Geoff Breen), Rick Jackovich, Harry Maskell, Kai Bates, Toby Cracknell.... “Yeah next year is going to be another one again you know. You’re saying a few new names and it’s awesome. Like, you want the new guys to come through and beat you, but at the same time when you can get something [the win] on a day like today it’s awesome as well.“ Issue 4 || BLADE Magazine || 9

Beau Beau (Beau Nixon) behind you chairing you up. How good! “Yeah Beau’s a legend! Beau beat me in conditions like this last year, you know so, for him to be happy for me... He’s a good guy so I enjoyed that he’s supporting me like that.”

Heading there for 2014. “ I’ll see what happens, you never know who they’ll pick for these teams” Oh true, still not a guaranteed selection? “I wouldn’t guarantee it, depends who you know.”

Rick Jackovich

Rick’s style in the final, how did you try and combat that? “I don’t try to deal with anyones style in a heat, you know. Just do your own thing and try to win. I feel sorry for those guys you know. Travel all this way across the country for such horrible surf. Being in the final, I bet he’s never surfed a day under head high in WA (Western Australia) before. Those two brothers are killing it mate. To come through and do as well as they did in this stuff.” Harry Maskell

Explain to the readers, the word went out, you’re in combo land, 5 minutes to go, what was going t your head, what was going through Jackson’s head?

“I was quite frustrated but I just said in my head ‘you can do it, you can do it’, then I hear dogman being on the microphone singing to me ‘Combo, Combo’, I was like ‘F-You Dogman! Don’t speak to me!!’ I was you cant talk about that!! Then I got a set so I made him shut up for a minute it was good”

HAHAHA! Too easy man!! Well good luck! Hopefully you get selected for ISA and congratualations o “Thanks heaps mate, appreciate it.” 16 || BLADE Magazine || Issue 4

The issue with trips, tours and contests is you always have to go back home. Back that that beachy you know inside out. Back to the disdain of numptys in your way. Back to the reality that you’ll never be happy with your home break. So..... what to do? Time to get on a boat, jump in a car, hitchike down the road, whatever it takes to find that next perfect wave
