Letter from the president Consistency underpins everything the Blaine Soccer Club (BSC) does and strives to achieve. Our goal is to deliver a high level, consistent soccer experience for all our players: Jr. Little Kickers, Recreational and Competitive. In addition to soccer programming, we aim to develop players beyond their on-the-field skills. BSC created a new leadership position to consistently support our Little Kickers and Recreational programs. Please welcome Alex Lapp as our first Recreational Director of Coaching starting this July. To ensure a consistent experience for our youngest players, the uniform scheduling template and curriculum will continue to evolve under Alex’s direction. He will be a point of contact, soccer expert and enthusiast for players and families. At the Competitive level, we develop players at every level of play, age and gender. Blaine Soccer Club’s comprehensive curriculum for all ages is an intentional plan to develop players as they progress in age and ability. We will establish coaching consistency at age groups for all levels of play. Developing coaching specialists for age groups is especially important at the younger ages where players mature at different paces both physically and mentally. BSC is also looking to develop players beyond the pitch. A fitness training element with an emphasis on lifelong fitness habits will be part of the program for all competitive players. Education will be provided for how players and families can fuel their bodies to achieve optimum results. BSC will provide events and opportunities to foster volunteerism and service to community. Club coaches will emphasize persistence, team work and sportsmanship in soccer so players can translate these concepts to future life endeavors. We believe that consistency from BSC will lead to a lifelong love of the game and lasting success for our players and families. Scott Nielsen BLAINE SOCCER CLUB / PRESIDENT

Letter from the

Executive director Blaine Soccer Club has undergone significant changes over the past two years. Blaine Soccer Club is in the process of putting ourselves in a position where we can focus on the individual development of every player. The major ways that Blaine Soccer Club believes we can make this possible is by having a purposeful plan in place which we can execute to deliver the best soccer experience in Minnesota. To be purposeful is to be determined and to show resolve. BSC is determined to improve at every level. In 2016/17 BSC became the club in the north district with the largest amount of indoor training space. This training space, which tripled our overall amount from previous years, is just the beginning of a year round training program that is being designed to best work for the players and families. BSC is also continuously developing our curriculum to suit the needs of all players, we cannot be satisfied with having a curriculum on paper, but we need a curriculum that is applicable and workable for all players. In 2017/18 BSC has added significantly to our staff. Blaine Soccer is committed to hiring the most dedicated, enthusiastic soccer personnel in the state. Please join me in welcoming all our new staff to the BSC team for this season. Coaching, facilities, curriculum are essential in a soccer club but to achieve our ultimate goal of developing people in a positive soccer environment, BSC has developed a liveable club culture that will become the bedrock of our club. Our livable traits and values: Dedication

Purposeful

Enthusiasm

Consistency

Professional

Humble

Respectful

All of these values are applicable to all parts of our organization and we hope to see these played out in real life. The development of soccer at the Blaine Soccer Club is dependent on the environment in which we create for the players to thrive in. The individual development within the game itself, is a long and arduous process that is best experienced within a consistent training environment. At BSC we wish to build a program that is respected both on and off the field for their approach to the game. Noel Quinn BLAINE SOCCER CLUB / Executive Director

Letter from the

Director of Coaching I look forward to another great year ahead for the Blaine Soccer Club. I find myself extremely fortunate to serve as the Director of Coaching of the organization and enter my 16th year working at the club. Over the past few years the Blaine Soccer Club has invested heavily in education opportunities for their staff and club coaches. As coaches, we must be humble in that no matter our years of experience or level of coaching certifications we have obtained, to always be willing to learn from others and take advantage of the many coach education opportunities that are available to us. We must encourage our players to be humble in victory and gracious in defeat. We should celebrate victory but always know that this game has a great tendency to bring us back down to earth if we take things for granted and don’t continue to work hard. Individual player development is key and players should take advantage of all opportunities available to them to achieve their goals. We have added an excellent squad of full time coaching staff to our club this summer. This will allow us more opportunities for regular in-house training, to learn from each other and to develop our curriculum. Age group directors at the younger ages will ensure that players of all levels will be getting the same coaching experience regardless of their assigned team and will provide consistency throughout the program. We made great strides this year with the many changes that were implemented. There are always bumps in the road as we move along so we need to be humble enough to admit to any mistakes, evaluate and improve. We look forward to making great strides again this season. Director of Club Services Blaine Soccer Club is dedicated to providing quality service at all aspects related to the game. To be dedicated means to strive to do your best everyday in everything you do. BSC is committed to value and providing exceptional service to our members and I am thrilled to be part of this great team. We are attentive to what is needed to continuously improve and to elevate our programs at all levels with integrity. I started off as a parent volunteer with the Blaine Soccer Club and have been an employee for 9 years working with registrations, team and player submittals, Competitive and Recreational programs, team accounts, financial reporting and many aspects of creating and keeping high standards for our club. I have a Business Degree from the University of Minnesota Carlson School of Management. I truly enjoy contributing to making this a very well run organization and it is very fulfilling being able to combine my love of people and soccer with my work skills. I live the game by playing soccer year round on an adult league team and watching and attending professional, MASL, and BSC games. Health and fitness are important aspects of my life and I want our players to take that with them for life along with other important values gained from their experience. We are devoted to maintaining a responsible budget with detailed and accurate information to enable us to make informed decisions. It is our pleasure to create a positive culture for the development of our players and families on and off the field.

Letter from the

Technical Director My name is Armando Oster and I will lead the U8-U10 Boys beginning in the fall of 2017. This will mark my second full season with BSC and I am very excited to work with all the players in the club throughout the 20172018 calendar year. Working with U8-U10 youth players requires an ENTHUSIASTIC person to provide a safe and fun environment for these age groups. The key is to pick your moments to be ENTHUSIASTIC. I have learned to catch players doing the expected behaviors and skills during training and then inviting them to be examples of what I want all the players to emulate. When a coach acknowledges a player doing something the preferred way or how the skill was taught in the session, the player usually is empowered and then is more willing to work harder for the trainer and they leave the session with a positive feeling about their experience on the day. When a player scores a goal or is caught trying to do the right thing in training, the ENTHUSIASTIC coach will celebrate the success or effort with great enthusiasm to promote the confidence of the individual player so that he or she continues to try new things and to not be afraid to make mistakes. I look forward to the coming year as a member of the BSC staff and I wish the best for all of our club members this coming season. Armando Oster BLAINE SOCCER CLUB / Technical Director

Letter from the

Technical Director I love my job. I get to be outside on the field or indoors on the turf helping kids grow every single day. While we strive to develop better soccer players, the true successes are when players learn to channel character skills such as grit, commitment, enthusiasm, humility, and respect. As coaches and parents it is important that we set the standards for the kids under our guidance to aspire to. One of the biggest ways we can all make an impact is by showing more respect on game day to the two most important groups – players and referees. After all, you cannot play a game without either one. I will start by saying that respect does not mean being soft. To me the number one way you can demonstrate respect to an opponent is to show up and play to your maximum ability the entire game. The thing is you can do this without demeaning the opposing team or your own team. We also need to do a better job of showing respect for our referees. I have 13 years of experience as a referee, which has helped give me perspective of the challenges faced by a referee, especially one just starting out. There were too many instances as a teenager where I faced threats and constant criticism from grown adults and sadly that sort of behavior still exists in our soccer community to this day. The referees are a crucial part of the game and if we don’t support them then we will always face a shortage. What I have discovered is it is much easier to demonstrate respect to players, coaches, referees and fans when you have been in those roles yourself. As the saying goes, “You don’t know, what you don’t know,” so I encourage everyone to keep learning and get out there and play, referee, coach and watch the game as much as possible.

Letter from the

Team Manager Director As I enter my second year with Blaine Soccer Club I couldn’t be more excited about where the club is headed. Blaine Soccer Club strives to be the best soccer club in Minnesota in so many different aspects on and off the field. Our goal is to provide a positive environment for all players and to develop them at all levels of the game. I feel so lucky to be a part of BSC’s mission and such a professional, hard-working team. Team managers are the backbone of the Competitive Program and we are privileged to have such a dedicated and professional group here at BSC that go above and beyond every single day. I am happy to be able to support each and every one of them throughout the season in any way I can. I also enjoy my role at BSC working to partner with the businesses in our community. Our sponsorship partners play an important role to support our current and future members with funding and services. We look to partner with people and companies that share our same values and goals. I look forward to another great year of soccer as our professional staff at BSC continues to grow and provide even more support to our members.

USSF MANDATES The United States Soccer Federation (USSF) is the governing body for all levels of soccer in the United States. In order to bring the U.S. in line with the rest of the soccer world, USSF is in the process of implementing some rather drastic changes. This past year we transitioned to teams being formed based on birth year, rather than grade, and this year USSF will be mandating a small-sided game structure across the country. Starting in the Fall of 2017 all teams nationwide are required to play 7v7, 9v9 and 11v11 formats of the game at the appropriate age groups to help establish consistency throughout the Untied States.

Small-Sided Game Mandate: All competitive soccer in the United States will move to the same small-sided format for games. • 7v7 format for U9-U10 teams • 9v9 format for U11-U12 teams • 11v11 format for U13+ teams In addition to the change in the number of players, the fields will also look different for U9-10 games. There will be a build out line to promote playing out of the back in a less pressured setting. When the goalkeeper has the ball in his or her hands (or on goal kicks) the opposing team must move behind the build out line until the ball is put into play. Offside is in affect starting at the build out line, not the halfway line.

Competitive tryouts Competitive Tryouts are held annually in late July and are open to all players who meet our age requirements. BSC operates a two tryout session system. Players are ranked based on their tryout performance in match situations and teams will be formed based on the rankings and input from our coaching staff and Director of Coaching. Players are selected on ability first, with a consideration for work rate, attitude, commitment and coachability. In addition to annual tryouts, new players interested in our club (after tryouts or during the season) can get in contact to compete for open roster spots. A player who is placed on a 2nd, 3rd or 4th level team will be considered to move up a team if a spot opens up on the roster above. This movement will be based on player willingness and the age group rankings. Team Announcements: Teams will be released as soon as possible after tryouts. Our goal is to complete team formation as accurately and quickly as possible. Teams will be released officially via the BSC website. All players have 2 days to complete the initial registration otherwise their position will not be guaranteed and will be offered to a player on the team below. Registration 2017-18: All players must register for Summer 2018 soccer during registration. Players who elect to play Summer Only can select this option during registration. Registration must be completed within 2 days or players risk losing their roster spot. Fees: At registration, a $200 non-refundable commitment fee is required. After which, a payment plan will be in place for all players for the remaining balance. Age Group Plans: Our goal is to have a minimum of 3 teams at every age group and gender. 1st Tier Team: Our goal is to have these teams being C1 teams. All 1st Tier teams will be called Elite Development Teams and will be club driven in terms of curriculum, practice frequency and tournaments entered. EDT groups will have all inclusive player costs representing a team budget. These teams are geared towards talented soccer players with an increased level of commitment. Multi-Sport athletes are encouraged to play on these teams also. 2nd Tier Teams: These teams will have access to professional coaching, winter training program training and club curriculum. 2nd Tier team fees include all admin, coaching and Winter Training Program fees. The 2nd Tier team is for committed and talented players with an ability to learn quickly and an enthusiasm for the game. Players on the 2nd Tier team who have the desire to be promoted to the 1st Tier team in future years have an opportunity to train in a consistent environment and improve over the season. 3rd Tier Teams: Team fees will include Winter Training Program fees and coach fees for teams that have professional coaches in additional to all admin and outdoor facility fees. Not all 3rd Tier teams will have professional coaches and some may have parent volunteer coaches. The 3rd Tier team is for passionate soccer players who lack the physical, technical or mental maturity to play at the higher levels, but with a commitment to soccer development. Players on the 3rd Tier team who have the desire to be promoted to the 2nd Tier team have an opportunity to train in a consistent environment and improve over the season. BSC club guidebook / 35

Goalkeeper Academy Goalkeeping is a specialized skill set that needs to be worked on from the youngest ages. Even if players do not eventually become a full time goalkeeper, young players are still encouraged to participate in goalkeeper activities over the course of the year. Older, established goalkeepers must continue to develop their skills throughout the year. BSC offers our Goalkeeper Savings Academy presented by Anchor Bank to all players in the club. Goalkeeper sessions are generally included in club fees and all EDT goalkeepers are expected to attend goalkeeper sessions. Variations of this program will run year-round.

pursuit fitness Cam Krugerud has been training sports performance and group fitness for 6 years. With a BA in Exercise Science, and a certification with NSCA CPT, he opened Pursuit Fitness which then partnered with the Blaine Soccer Club in Fall 2016. By adding the fitness component to the Blaine Soccer Club players will receive top training, and more opportunities to make it onto higher tiered teams. With growing competition of other clubs, and the sport of soccer, the need for a soccer specific strength training program became a high demand. BSC wants to provide each member and family with the best program in the state. With top notch coaching and a comprehensive soccer training program, each player will be in an atmosphere to succeed in their soccer careers. Pursuit Fitness embodies the fitness model of training adults, athletes, and families to pursue their best self. By partnering with Blaine Soccer we have developed the F.A.S.S.T. (Fitness Agility Strength Soccer Training) Program specifically for every teams needs. F.A.S.S.T. is a 4 phase training program designed to peak players at the beginning of their competitive season. The program starts with an anatomical adaptation to teach form and prevent injury. It then goes into strength, then power, and finally power endurance to prepare players for game like situations. The F.A.S.S.T. program will test players three times each season so athletes can see their improvement. Not only will this program increase players’ speed, and strength, it will improve their confidence. This is the number one factor BSC and Pursuit want to instill in all the athletes, which will carry into their everyday lives.

Principles of the Game Learn how to play your specific position better. This position-specific program will be geared towards understanding the principles of attack and defense. Principles of Defense: Pressure, Cover, Balance, Compactness, Restraint, Control Principles of Attack: Width, Depth, Penetration, Mobility, Creativity Principles of the Game Training will be included in the fees for all EDT players, but all players in BSC will have the opportunity to sign up for this program. The program will run in March 2017.

Futsal Futsal will continue to be an integral part of BSC programming in order to offer an avenue for players to simply play the game in a fun environment. Futsal is a great way to help players develop their technique and decision making while playing indoors. Futsal is played with a smaller, weighted ball, that bounces less than a regular ball. The surface, ball and rules create an emphasis on improvisation, creativity and technique as well as ball control and passing in tight spaces.

Technical Academy All BSC players can be included in the Technical Academy. The Technical Academy is a training program geared towards the individual technical development in game-like situations. Technique is vital to the development of players and is the bedrock of our curriculum. This training program will involve small-sided games to ensure the correct use of that technique in game situations. Technique is vital, but technique with decision-making ability is the KEY factor in developing top-level players. Technical Academy will run in Winter 1 and Winter 2.

Rec Tech Rec Tech is geared towards the Recreational player who wishes to develop their skills outside of the Rec Program. This individual development program will focus on the technical aspect of soccer and the fundamentals of the game including: dribbling, passing, shooting and control.

College Recruiting Want to go to college? Want to play college soccer? BSC is committed to education and we see soccer as just one piece of the college experience. BSC is committed to helping all players (interested in college soccer or not) to work through the college selection process. From a soccer perspective, we will educate players regarding the recruitment process and from an educational perspective we will provide each high school age player the opportunity to focus on what is important to them in their next phase of life. BSC has partnered with College Fit Finder software to assist players in their college search process.

BSC Summer Camp BSC will offer every player in the Blaine Soccer Club the opportunity to participate in a week of soccer camp during the school holidays. The BSC Summer Camp will be held in early June each year and is included in each players registration fee. The BSC Summer Camp will incorporate small sided tournaments, individual skill development in age group training and team specific tactical training. This camp will give the BSC Coaching staff the opportunity to work with all teams in the club and address team goals at a mid-point of the season.

financial aid We understand that soccer can be an expensive sport, but we are committed to offering the highest quality programming at the most affordable price. Our goal is to offer the highest value possible for every dollar spent on soccer. We appreciate that not all people can afford to pay the full fees and so we are committed to offering avenues for all players to participate. Recreational players who receive free and reduced lunch are awarded 50% scholarship to their fees. This does not apply to the Competitive Program. BSC Financial Aid processes are guided by the following criteria: • Family needs • Number of children in a family • Number of players in BSC • Family income • Overall financial situation Families are eligible to apply for BSC Financial Aid through the BSC website (www.blainesoccer.org). All financial and personal information is considered highly confidential and this information is not shared with anyone outside of the Financial Aid Committee. For the privacy of our applicants, all documentation provided will be destroyed or returned upon request.

Registration Fees: Every BSC Competitive player must pay a $200 registration fee payable at the time of registration. The only exception to this rule are: • Players who receive free lunches through Anoka Hennepin School District are eligible to pay a $50 registration fee at the time of registration. The remaining $150 is added to their remaining player fee based on the team in which they are placed and must be paid. BSC Financial Aid can assist with all fees but all players must register in order to be placed on a team. • Players who receive reduced lunches through Anoka Hennepin School District are eligible to pay a $100 registration fee at the time of registration. The remaining $100 is added to their remaining player fee based on the team in which they are placed and must be paid. BSC Financial Aid can assist with all fees but all players must register in order to be placed on a team. BSC club guidebook / 70

Guidelines: • Financial need must be demonstrated for consideration. Economic hardship will be the only factor in awarding financial aid. No one will be disqualified from consideration because of sex, race, color, creed or religious beliefs. • While we try to address as much of the need as possible, financial aid amounts will be based on the number of players demonstrating need, the extent of that need and the budget available for financial aid that year. • Financial aid awards will be reviewed on a yearly basis. • NO player will receive a scholarship for 100% of their fees. • The highest awarded scholarship will be 75% • Other awards are 50% and 25%

Criteria and Eligibility: To be considered you must: 1. Complete and submit the application for financial aid. 2. Supply a copy of the first two pages of your 2015 and 2016 filed Federal Tax Returns. 3. Please include any additional documentation demonstrating financial need. 4. Applications received after the published deadline will not be considered. 5. Applications that are not filled out completely will not be considered. 6. Applications must be filled out by the adult requesting financial aid. Applications for financial aid cannot be filled out by coaches, team managers, children or friends. 7. All submitted financial information will be destroyed by BSC in compliance with the BSC document retention policies, unless the applicant requests their return. 8. Any unpaid league fees from prior seasons will result in an applicant being ineligible for financial aid. 9. Financial aid recipients must complete required volunteer time. Not fulfilling the required volunteer time will make the applicant ineligible for future financial aid. After financial aid is awarded, the remaining balance of player registration and other application fees are to be paid in full by December 15th, 2017 unless a payment schedule is in place. Failure to maintain financial good standing with BSC will result in a player being ineligible to participate. If a child chooses to leave the club, the full financial aid allocation will be due back to BSC.

parent code of conduct As parents of soccer players, you are allowing us access to your child’s life. We want to make sure the environment we are creating in our club is enhanced by your presence. Below is a range of articles that will benefit your child’s participation in our club.

Parents are not only supporters of their children, but are also role models whose actions reflect on and influence their player, team and club. BSC parents are expected to: • Remember the game is for the players, not for you • Enable players to attend all possible team events such as practices, games and meetings • Set an example of good and fair conduct and positive sportsmanship • Allow the coach to direct practices and games • Be your players biggest fan, regardless of the results • Remember that your child’s soccer career is a long-term development process • Contribute with meaningful and thoughtful communication • Encourage your child to speak up and communicate with their coach and teammates • Abide by the rules and policies of BSC and your team

Parents play a critical role in their child’s development and soccer can be used as a tool to enhance a childhood and instill life-long memories and lessons. BSC encourages you to support your child in the game in a manner that supports the spirit of sportsmanship and respect. For the purpose of developing this club and becoming a leader in respect initiatives, BSC would like you to consider the following: • Be your child’s biggest supporter. Do not withdraw your love when your child performs below their standards • Parents should not coach from the sidelines during matches or practices • Refrain from criticizing your child or any child’s performance • Do not criticize the coach. If you find yourself unhappy with the coach you should approach the coach to discuss the issue • Support all players on your child’s team • Respect and applaud the opposition players and coaches • Do not humiliate, criticize, comment on opponents, their coaches or the referees BSC club guidebook / 72

As parents, we encourage you to nurture independence and responsibility in your child. • Make it your child’s responsibility to pack their own uniform and equipment in their soccer bag • If appropriate, encourage your child to communicate directly with the coach about issues, concerns, conflicts or simply missing upcoming practices or games • Players should be reminded to take responsibility for their own performance and not place blame on others • Allow your child the freedom to practice with his or her team without your active presence or evaluation • Responsibility and ownership is an important part of maturing. Your child’s handling of these tasks on and off the field complete ownership of all aspects of being a soccer player

Parent Sportsmanship Agreement Your coach and club kindly ask your cooperation in abiding by the rules and guidelines that all players, coaches, referees and spectators are required to follow. In order to provide a fun and positive environment for everyone, BSC asks that you check the following agreement during registration: • I will be positive • I will express support and encouragement for my child and their teammates • I will respect and support my child’s coach • I understand that any coaching or instructions from the parents side of the field is not allowed • I will let the coach do the coaching without my interference • I will adhere to a 24-hour “cooling off” period before communicating with a coach • I will respect the referees and refrain from criticizing their calls • I will accept the referee’s decision no matter the result or how unfair or incorrect they may appear • I will respect club officials • I understand that soccer has rules, policies and guidelines. All decisions made by the club are made in good faith and are for the betterment of all players • I will be a good sport • I will teach my child good sportsmanship towards the opposing team and parents as well as respect for property owned by others or leased by the club • I will recognize the importance and value of club volunteers • Coaches, referees and club officials give their time and resources to provide a complete soccer experience for my child • I will accept the consequences if I behave improperly. Consequences may include being removed from games by the referee, suspension from attending games and removal from the team and club.
