The Mission Of Patrick Henry Boys & Girls Homes Patrick Henry Boys and Girls Homes, Inc. is a charitable, nonprofit children’s home designed to provide boys and girls with a Christian substitute home. This residential child care program reaches out a loving hand to children from broken and disrupted homes that can no longer meet their needs. Our focus is to reach children in high-risk situations to prevent delinquency, substance abuse, and emotional disturbances. This program began as a non-denominational ministry on February 1, 1961, and has developed into a multi-service program of the very highest quality. Emphasis is placed on modeling Christian family life for children and only married couples are employed as houseparents. Emphasis is also placed on developing the physical, mental, and spiritual potential of each child to the fullest extent possible. Applications for admission are made by a parent or guardian and extensive investigations are made in each case. Approval for admission is based on urgency of need and the ability of the program to meet the needs of that particular child. The program is operated by a volunteer Board of Trustees and is promoted and represented by a volunteer Advisory Board with members from various regions throughout Virginia. We operate on voluntary contributions and no government assistance is accepted. At the same time, we are truly a charitable operation and no child is ever turned away due to lack of funding for support. PHBGH takes great pride in its internal self-help efforts and our efficiency of operations. PH BGP

Change is the Only Constant
Robert Day, Executive Director
Many things have changed since the first boys came to the Plantation to live in the winter of 1961. The cars that brought them here cost only $2,600 when they were new and gas was a mere .35 cents a gallon back then. Those boys, who are now men, pay $7.09 today to buy what they spent only $1.00 to purchase then. The average new house in their day was priced at about $12,700. It is over 10 times that today, even after the housing bubble collapsed. In fact the first home built at the Plantation where those boys lived cost around $10,000 and it took the founders a decade to raise the necessary funds. But prices aren’t the only things that have inflated. In 1961, church leaders were decrying the epidemic of divorces. Of all marriages, 26% were failing. Today the epidemic has reached the unbelievable rate of 52%. Fifty years ago only 5% of births were illegitimate (out of wedlock). Today it is hovers around 41% nationwide with some areas in the country experiencing an astounding 75% illegitimacy rate. In 1961 there were 81 teenagers in Washington DC who were convicted of murder. Just three decades later, 482 teens were convicted of the same crime in the same city – the seat of our federal government.
When our first boys arrived on campus, JFK had recently challenged the nation to “ask not what your country can do for you but ask what you can do for your country” but now we are a nation of entitlement seekers. Back then Jim Crow was the law in the south but abortion was illegal. The nation was in the early stages of the War in Vietnam but the War on Poverty had not yet destroyed the nation’s work ethic. Rock-n-
Roll was popular but the “British Invasion” hadn’t yet sparked the evolution of today’s entertainment centered pop-culture. Few could have imagined in 1961 that the greatest and fastest expansion of technology and innovation in human history would explode in the next five decades. Facebook, e-mails, texting, reality TV, Skyping, and Google searches would have been very foreign to the first young men that entered our program. They communicated by writing letters (a skill and practice almost extinct today) or by telephone, if one was available. The first residents that came to Patrick Henry were undoubtedly described as needy and maybe even “at-risk” but they were less likely to be “troubled” or identified as a “problem” child. Attention Deficit Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, Eating Disorders and the myriad other disorders that professionals so readily attach to our current residents were simply not an issue in those early years. Despite billions of federal and state dollars, America’s children face an uncertain and bleak future - a future much more dire than the founders of Patrick Henry Boys Home could have ever imagined. Every pathological tendency in the culture has been visited on our children at earlier and earlier ages in recent decades. The nuclear family is at risk of becoming extinct as “alternative” families and lifestyles reject the traditional family for other kinds of relationships and environments that are proving to be devastating to children. A teen suicide rate that is has quadrupled in recent decades is ample enough evidence. High dropout rates, young women in poverty as heads of households, violent crimes and rampant drug use by undisciplined youths – all mutually reinforcing and self-perpetuating continued page 4

continued from page 3 pathologies – have become the most nationally pressing social problem. Fatherlessness is a growing epidemic that threatens to rip apart the very fabric of society. Children who live apart from their fathers will account for: 63% of teen suicides, 70% of juveniles in group homes, 71% of high-school dropouts, 85% of youth in prison, 90% of homeless and runaway children. Unless we find a way to make childhood possible again, unless we make a way to restore the traditional
family, unless we find the collective will to stand against the rising tide of destruction that is enveloping our society, not only will we be destroying our children’s present and future, we may be concocting a dismal prospect for ourselves as well. But there is hope. Patrick Henry Boys and Girls Homes can and do make a very real and tangible difference. We have been blessed with a name, a mission, a history, and with resources that can help reverse the troubling trends in our culture. And we are working very hard to channel all of those assets to help those with the greatest need. But time is not on our side.
The changes that took place in our culture over the last five decades will now take half that time. The temptations that are destroying our youth are coming at them at earlier and earlier ages and they have fewer and fewer resources and support to deal with them. We all know that children quickly become adults, especially if we are not ready for them to be. We do not have the luxury of taking our time to respond to the many calamities in their precious lives and we cannot do it alone. We need your help. To learn more about the programs we offer to vulnerable children and distressed families visit us on our newly designed website: www.patrickhenry.org. Thank you! PH BGP
Our Services
It is our goal that all of our services be founded on biblical principles, evidence-based best practices, and proven outcomes. We strive for a perfect blend of ministry motivated by faith, guided by scriptures and grounded in industryaccepted outcomes. We work hard at Patrick Henry to offer the most effective programs and services to help distressed children and families. We provide a fully integrated continuum of services and programs designed to help children and families overcome their challenges and live successfully.
Child & Family Counseling Through our Hope for Tomorrow Counseling centers we offer counseling to children, adolescents, adults, and families. Fear, anger, resentment, anxiety: these and other emotions can literally paralyze an individual or family, making it difficult (if not impossible) to have healthy relationships. Through our counseling services, we strive to help our clients develop the skills necessary to live free from harmful emotions and destructive actions and to live more productively.
Residential Care Sometimes treatment for at-risk youth requires out-of-home help. Our group homes offer counseling, constant supervision, constructive activities, and
4

spiritual guidance for youth with actingout behaviors or for those who, because of life situations or family dynamics, simply need an alternative place to live. Therefore, we offer two types of programs. One focuses on Family Reunification and the other prepares the young person for Independent Living.
Transitional Living Our transitional living program provides assistance to young adults who age out of state custody or residential care facilities. Our transitional living staff work with young people ages 17 to 22 to develop independent living skills, helping them find affordable housing, obtain healthcare, continue their education and secure a job.
Future Services Because of our Core Values we are working diligently to offer even more services. What we are doing now is never enough for tomorrow. Our entrepreneurial spirit leads us to test the limits of existing services and create new opportunities to serve when the needs of children and families demand it. We are working to get new programs in place as soon as possible. Help us dream, plan, and build these programs so that more children and families can receive the help they need and deserve. PH BGP

Updates from Our Cottages Time marches on and so does Bedford Cottage! We all enjoyed the winter, but were Bedford thrilled to see the grass turn green and buds on the trees. We have enjoyed getting outside and playing in the sun. Emily S. graduated from high school this spring and we are so proud of her as she flies out of the nest. Emily B. and Emily S. both work at Applebee’s in Bedford where they enjoy meeting new people and having the extra spending money the job brings. Our sweet Jessica, who had been with us for more than five years, went home in June to live with her family. Our hearts broke a little bit to see her go, but at the same time we are excited that she is back with her family and taking on all kinds of new experiences. “Little” Tori is not so little anymore, as she has joined the ranks of teenager and is enjoying the warm weather and getting in the swimming pool. Taylor has turned 15 and is setting her sights on getting a job and if you ask her she can tell you exactly how many days until she can apply for a learner’s permit. Lindsey has come to live in our cottage and she keeps us laughing and smiling with her infectious smile and attitude. Along with the Wolfangers’ son Jack, Lindsey is riding her skateboard at the recently opened skate park in Bedford. Mykala is our newest resident and we are showing her what a Bedford Cottage summer is like. Lindsey, Tori, Emily B., Taylor, and Jack enjoyed showing their lambs at the 4-H lamb show. They worked hard since February to raise them and train them to be just right for the competition in May.
This past semester had Marco and Dajur playing basketball for a Christian school league that Patrick Henry was involved Halifax in. Our team surprisingly made it to the championship game but we didn’t win. However, the team made remarkable progress and showed some excellent effort despite many of the members being on board for the very first time. Keante, our youngest, was on a baseball team. He was super psyched about playing and if enthusiasm could win games, his team would have the championship sewn up! This summer Josh and Dajur graduated into high school.

One good change in our area is the new Hope for Tomorrow Counseling Center– South Boston. This means our guys who go to counseling will not have to go all the way to Lynchburg. This will save a lot of time, money and gas. With the increasing price of gas, this is a huge blessing! Speaking of Hope for Tomorrow-South Boston, this will be the last Halifax Cottage update by us (the Lewandowskis a.k.a. the Ls.) Sandra has accepted the position of office manager for the Hope for Tomorrow Counseling Center. So, we have recently wound down our almost eight years of houseparenting here in Cluster Springs. We’ve had a lot of fun through the years and have weathered living, loving, molding and mentoring 27 boys in all shapes, sizes and colors through those years. We’ve been blessed. Thanks for all your prayers through the years, and please continue to pray for us. You can never be prayed for too much! We love this community and will continue to live in South Boston.
The spring semester was extremely busy and active for the now eight residents in Plymale Cottage. Steven and Damion Plymale were our seniors! Their days were filled with tux fittings and senior prom plans as well applying to and receiving acceptance letters from various colleges and universities. Damion finished up the William Campbell High School varsity basketball season in February, while Steven participated in two forensic competitions and had a solo in the Patrick Henry Choir in the spring. Chris and Colbie, our juniors, both worked at Food Lion in Brookneal for a couple of months. Both boys took great pride in their work and received wonderful reviews from their employer. Dasmine will be a junior next year and Scott a sophomore. They enjoyed their spring semester. They both also enjoy attending youth group at Childrey Baptist Church on Tuesday evenings. We also gained two new residents this spring! Jakell, age 9, is from Lynchburg, and is by far the youngest resident in our house. He enjoys playing outside, watching out for the Fulmers’ dog Zeke and their young son, Cohen, playing with his D.S., and doing arts and crafts. He has a great sense of
summer
humor and is a delight to be around! Ryan, age 15, is from the South Boston area. He enjoys basketball, music, and while he seemed quiet at first, is a very honest and skilled conversationalist. A lot changed in our house in the spring. We are excited about the changes and challenges that have come our way!
Rustburg Cottage had a very busy spring. Moesha and Rosa, our newest residents, brought a lot of personality to Rustburg the cottage. We also spent time getting our two seniors, Sammy and Mary, ready to graduate from high school. Summer was busy with her two goats and with riding lessons a couple of times a week. Libby was involved with her school soccer team and had a very active social life. Savanah completed a session of karate with the church outreach teams. We had an exciting event in early April with Libby’s Sweet Sixteen Barn Dance. This was a fun time with lots of friends and family to come together and celebrate her very important 16th birthday. Rustburg was the Cottage open during Spring break this year. During that time we were able to take the residents out to eat, shopping and to the movies. We also had some time in the cottage just hanging out and working outside in the yard.
It has been a busy six months at Stephens Cottage. Yuri came to live with us three days after Christmas. He is a Stephens sixteen year old sophomore and already made the honor roll in January. He has been active in the youth groups at Falling River Baptist Church and at Childrey Baptist Church. He likes to take things apart and put them back together. Most importantly Yuri knows Jesus as his savior and made that known publicly at his baptism on Palm Sunday at Falling River Baptist Church. Our youngest resident, Larnza, has been active in William Campbell High School concert band, as well as the jazz band. The concert band received all ones, the highest mark a band can receive in a recent state competition. Larnza is looking forward to football season so he can continue to grow as a player.
2011
Devin continues to participate in the Patrick Henry Choir and was the keynote speaker (preacher) on Youth Sunday at Falling River Baptist Church. Devin also played on the Patriot basketball team which placed in the Lynchburg Church League. Devin will be starting weight lifting in preparation for football when the new season starts. Judah, like Larnza, is active in the WCHS concert and jazz bands, as well as involvement in the Virginia Youth Band Ensemble concert and Jazz band. His musical talent has been enjoyed by members of Falling River Baptist Church and Brookneal Baptist Church where Judah glorified the Lord by playing his saxophone to the delight of church members. Judah has also been active in forensics at WCHS. He placed 1st in the district completion, 1st in the region, and 2nd in the state wide completion. Judah’s hard work has been rewarded by receiving placement in Governor’s School for Visual and Performing Arts this summer at Radford University. Tevin completed his season on the varsity basketball team, and he made the honor roll while competing. Tevin also competing on the WCHS track team running in the 100 and 200 meter dashes, anchor on the 4x100 meter relay team. In addition, Tevin high jumps, long jumps, and competes in the triple jump at field events. Tevin placed well in all events with multiple 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place finishes in district and regional meets. Last but not least is our newest “resident”. Parson Mathis. Parson is several months old and is three pounds of pure energy. His mother is a rat terrier, but fortunately he has the cute face of his beagle father. All of the campus kids love him.
Well, we had a lot going on at the Wylliesburg Cottage (Pineland) during the spring with the beautiful flowers Wylliesburg blooming and the warm weather having arrived. It let us enjoy the outside and listen to the birds chirp. Sarah was on the track team for Randolph-Henry High School and made Patrick Henry Honor Roll. Alexis also made Patrick Henry Honor Roll. She enjoyed her spring break at home with her family and friends. Jasmine is doing well in the Pineland home with her second family. She loves the color purple. Rachelle recently came to our Pineland home. She had a great time over spring break with her aunt. She had all B’s on her progress report and was also on the Patrick Henry Honor continued page 8

Roll. Crystal also made Patrick Henry Honor Roll and enjoyed the time with her family over spring break. Yasmeen (our littlest sister) enjoys playing outside, riding bikes, skateboarding, and her new school. She enjoys being with us, when she gets her way! She is a great joy to be around. Victoria was a new resident to our home. She is a very sweet girl. She loves everyone in the home and came to this country from Russia by way of Iowa only a couple of years ago. We had fun events take place during the spring. The Moreharts took us to an Easter play in Farmville. Also, they came over for dinner when we had Mrs. Pierantoni and her mother come over. We had pizza, cupcakes, salad and drink. We all had a very wonderful time with them. We also went

fishing at the nearby pond. Yasmeen was the only person to catch a fish that day! Earlier in the year we went to the Rustburg Cottage and picked up rocks to help keep the horses safe. Later that night, we had pizza and brownies. We also have had a good time with the Millners coming over. They are a lot of fun and a joy to be around. And more recently, Antioch Baptist Church blessed us with loads of toiletry items and gifts. We are so thankful. During the summer we’ve gone fishing, swimming, and to parks and other fun activities that all of us enjoy. There are also times when we work on the yard, and volunteer for others. Oh yeah, and don’t forget trips to Wal-Mart! PH BGP

Thank You June & Paul Renaut Think of very special “grandparents” who invite you to their home each Summer and each Christmas, provide lots of fun on the water, delicious food, gifts and lots of love, and you have a picture of June and Paul Renaut with the Patrick Henry children! For many years the Renauts have invited the entire Patrick Henry family to their beautiful water-front home on Smith Mountain Lake in July and to a special Christmas Party each December. They have a talent for remembering individual “likes” (food-wise) of the children and they make a special effort to always include these special “likes” on the menu. Picture the spread which includes German potato salad, broccoli salad, macaroni and cheese, German pickled cukes, Rice Krispie treats, chocolate chip cookies, brownies, and ice cream along with patio grilled hamburgers and hotdogs. The Renaults lived in Queens NY, Columbus OH, Kansas City MO, and Radford VA before settling down at Smith Mountain

Lake 25 years ago. Their first experience with Patrick Henry children was at a Smith Mountain Lake Ruritan Club Christmas Party some 15 years ago when the PH Choir performed. They sat with individual children at dinner and enjoyed firsthand conversations about life at Patrick Henry and what it meant to each child. June says, “Lake Days and Christmas Parties grew out of this experience and we now feel like ‘grandparents’ to many PH boys and girls.” Clearly the feelings are mutual for the PH children. In fact, The Renauts were some of the first guests to arrive at the 2011 Awards Ceremony on the Brookneal Campus this past June. They were among the “proudest grandparents” there! Thank you, June and Paul, for your hospitality, your generosity, and most of all for the love you give our Patrick Henry children. You are very special people to all of us at Patrick Henry! PH BGP
PHBGH Volunteers Are Special Many months have passed since I took on the role of Volunteer Coordinator. There continues to be an increase in excitement as we expand into our various Hubs to meet more needs in carefully targeted ways. When people consider volunteering, they might make the assumption that they would have to come to Brookneal to volunteer. While that is certainly welcomed and needed, we also realize that convenience and time management for our volunteers is necessary. It is wonderful to pinpoint and determine where someone would like to volunteer and to make that a good fit. We are blessed to have a unique volunteer force of various ages, genders, experience and gifts. Many of our college volunteers definitely prefer to help near their campus as many don’t have the means to do a lot of travel. Some want to be able to help near to where their jobs are located or near their homes. Barbara Pavone is a new volunteer in our Lynchburg Hub. Being able to volunteer with us in the Lynchburg Hub has offered convenience, but much more. Barbara says: “After moving to Lynchburg seven years ago, and hearing about PHBGH, my first thought was what a wonderful idea--I’d never heard of anything like this before. Growing up as the oldest of six children and living in an environment that for the most part was very unstable, there were times when my siblings and I could have benefited from a PHBGH. The fact that PH provides a secure and loving faith-based environment for children lacking these basic necessities in their lives, through no fault of their own, struck a chord in my heart. I fully believe in what the organization stands for and by volunteering my time, I feel I am helping PH and these children in their goal to obtain a happy and productive life.”
On the flip-side with our new hubs, our residents have the opportunity to connect more fully with the communities in which they live. Bedford Cottage residents, for example, have had the opportunity to help PH volunteer Barbara Berry with some painting improvements at her home and have also established a special relationship with the Bedford Area Pregnancy Center. Won’t you see which Cottages are located in your “hub” and consider building a PH relationship today? Back To School Fund Becomes The Childrens Fund
Hat Creek Golf Course Partners With PHBGH
For many years Patrick Henry supporters have given to what we referred to formerly as the Back to School Fund. This Fund now has a new name, The Childrens Fund, which better describes its function in the lives of our boys and girls. While there are always additional expenses involved with the beginning of the school year, many of these costs continue throughout the entire year. The Childrens Fund includes school supplies, school lunches, clothing, shoes, haircuts, personal hygiene items, dental and medical expenses, birthdays, and other typical items involved in the costs of raising children. Please note The Childrens Fund option on the enclosed gift envelope and consider making a donation to this Fund to help us “raise” these deserving children.
Thanks to the generosity of Bill and Michelle Singleton, owners and operators of Hat Creek Golf Course, Patrick Henry residents and staff are able to play golf free on this beautiful 9-hole course which is only five miles from our Brookneal Campus. With Hat Creek’s partnership, in July, we started a golf program for our residents. Golf is a great sport to teach principles of etiquette and character. Many young people who might not be stellar athletes in other sports can foster a life-long love for golf. In consideration of other golfers, Patrick Henry residents must be accompanied by PH Coach Adam Spencer and they will be playing only at non-peak hours. Boys and girls of all ages regardless of skill level are invited to participate. Thank you, Singletons, for this wonderful gift!

Spotlight on a Talented Resident Picture a sixteen year old boy with a broad smile, an enthusiastic disposition and a winning personality…that’s Judah Arrington! He came to Patrick Henry from Fredericksburg three years ago and is a wonderfully talented resident in Stephens Cottage on the Brookneal Campus. A rising senior at William Campbell High School, Judah was recommended by his school to participate in The Governor’s School for Humanities and Visual & Performing Arts at Radford University this summer. This required auditioning and being accepted for the month long program where he is focusing on music and classes in performing arts. This is “right up his alley” since Judah is considering a career in film. Judah says in his spare time he likes to cook, especially preparing sauces and unusual foreign food. When Judah was encouraged by his houseparents , Carma and Pierce Foulk, to get a summer job, he was dreading it because , according to Judah, “I assumed I would be flipping burgers at some greasy fast food restaurant” but he would “endure it because it would mean a paycheck”. As he began to brainstorm and think about “other types” of jobs he learned again from his houseparents about the possibility of being an employee at Patrick Henry which meant an office job. He jumped at the chance, especially when executive director Robert Day implied that he wanted Judah to do some work with filming and videography. The rest is history! Judah began with filming the Horse Show, did work uploading videos on YouTube and our website, created a virtual tour of campus, filmed a day in the life of a resident, and plans to film the Patrick Henry beach trip in late July and early August. Who knows what else Judah might accomplish this summer with his varied talents and his winning personality! PH BGP
The Library Media Center of Jefferson Forest High School (JFHS) in Bedford County recently hosted its annual Scholastic Book Fair and also sponsored a fundraiser to purchase books for the residents of Patrick Henry Boys and Girls Homes. Jefferson Forest students donated money in their fourth period class and were able to raise over $474, which was used to buy books and posters from the book fair. Caitlyn Leach and Chaquille Cozart were members of the fourth period class that raised the most money, and Courtney Otey donated books from her personal library. They presented the books and posters to residents of the Bedford Cottage in the spring. Thanks go to the Jefferson Forest teens who were so generous to the Patrick Henry teens! PH BGP

Welcome New Residents Rosa came to Patrick Henry in February and she lives in the Rustburg Cottage. She moved from Brookville, MD which is near Rockville. Her birthday is October 23. As an 8th grader at Rustburg Middle School, Rosa enjoys meeting new friends at school while getting used to living with a roommate in the Cottage. Rosa says her favorite pastimes are being with her friends, listening to music and straightening hair. She lists watching TV and shopping as her hobbies. In addition, Rosa enjoys all types of sports. Yasmeen, age 7, has added a new dimension to life in the Wylliesburg Cottage where she is by far the youngest resident. She arrived at Patrick Henry from Norfolk. VA in February and was in the first grade this past school year. She lists her first grade teacher, Mrs. Tucker, as one of her special (new) friends. She describes school as “kind of fun”! When asked what she likes to do, Yasmeen’s list goes like this: “spend time with my friends and my (new) family, go skating, go to the computer lab, do art, go to the library, read, and collect shells”. Yasmeen’s birthday is April 7. She describes Cottage life as having “lots of big sisters and one best friend, Nicholas”, who is the 8 year-old son of flex houseparents Tammy and Richard Hinchey. Being so close in age, Yasmeen and Nicholas share many common interests such as “just playing outside together.” Victoria came to Patrick Henry in March and lives in the Bedford Cottage. She is 13 years old and her birthday is May 14. Born in Russia, at age 9 Victoria moved from there to Michigan. She lived in Michigan for three months then moved to Iowa and from there to Wylliesburg. A calm young lady with a winning smile, Victoria has made many friends along the way. Among those she describes as “most special” are the girls at
her church in Iowa who belonged to GEMS (Girls Everywhere Meeting the Savior). Victoria describes herself as an “inside person, not an outside person”. Victoria asked for her favorite Bible verses to be included in The Orator: Psalms 51:1-2, Philippians 4:6, and Philippians 2:14-15. She describes these verses as helpful to her because they deal with forgiveness and they help her not to worry. Jakell came to Patrick Henry from Forest, VA in February and lives in Plymale Cottage on the Brookneal Campus. He is 9 years old and in the second grade. Jakell’s birthday is the day after Christmas, December 26. He describes the “best parts of school” as lunchtime and recess although when asked about subjects he likes, he mentioned science and math. He added that he liked “learning about Egypt and the Nile River in school last year.” Jakell enjoys playing with animals and playing video games. Also among his favorites are dirt bikes and motorcycles. He considers the older boys in Plymale as “big brothers.” Ryan is 15 years old and came to Plymale Cottage on the Brookneal Campus in March from South Boston, VA. His birthday is July 17. A rising sophomore in high school, Ryan is described by his houseparents as a “laid back guy”. He enjoys listening to music and hanging out with the other boys in his Cottage. His favorite subject in school is English and he even enjoys learning grammar. Favorite pastimes are video games, basketball, football, and “just being with family”. “C. J.” moved to Stephens Cottage on the Brookneal Campus in early June from Lynchburg, VA. His birthday is Sept. 27 and he is in the 8th grade. His favorite subjects in school are math and science. He especially enjoys playing La Cross in league competition, and playing other sports as pickup games “just to have fun”. C. J. likes to play strategy games and to read sci-fi books. continued next page

continued from page 16 Mykala moved to the Bedford Cottage in April from Rustburg, VA and is in the 10th grade at Liberty High School. Her birthday is April 13. She likes to take pictures, listen to music, and to go swimming. When Mykala “grows up, she wants to be a CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant). Her mom and dad are at the top of the list as persons she admires. James came to Patrick Henry in early July from Brunswick County, VA and lives in Stephens Cottage on the Brookneal
Campus. His birthday is November 7 and he is in the 9th grade. James enjoys all kinds of sports: football, basketball and swimming. He especially likes living on the Brookneal Campus where is close to the Patrick Henry pool. He describes himself as an athletic person who also likes studying science and English in school. James smiled from ear to ear when he described the 4th of July fireworks at Red Hill which he saw soon after coming to Patrick Henry. He even liked helping to clean up the Red Hill grounds the day after the fireworks display. PH BGP
Alumni News Much is going on in the lives of our alumni. Even though they are scattered all over the United States, they continue to keep in touch to let us know what they are doing. We enjoy hearing from them because it lets us know the difference Patrick Henry has made in their lives. God continues to bless our ministry here at Patrick Henry. Mike Michelson is having knee surgery soon. He does not have a date yet but he is going to keep us posted. He is looking to go back to college soon.
Holly White is expecting a baby in March. This is her first child. She works for Fire House Subs in Lynchburg Va. She is actively communicating with Patrick Henry. Margeret Haun had a close cousin pass away recently. She is asking that everyone keep her in our prayers. She and her family are looking to visit Patrick Henry very soon. Buddy Smith is volunteering for Lynchburg General Hospital. He answers phones and shows people where different places are in the hospital. On top of his volunteering he has made contact with a couple of alums. He is working on getting them involved again.
Karie Snow has a new job working at Bedford Memorial Hospital. She is looking to become a nurse very soon. Kevin Adamson is still working in video production. He produces music videos for Christian music artists all over the world. He has even had the opportunity to interview some professional athletes. One in particular was Michael Vick. Tonya Martin is another of the many alums that is doing well. She works for the City of Danville. She is an active volunteer for Patrick Henry.
We get many stories like these. We plan to continually update everyone on the successes of the children that have come through the program. Congratulations to all of our alums and their successes. Please continue to keep in touch. If you know of any other alumni that have lost contact with us, please have them contact us so we can celebrate with them in their successes and pray for them in their areas of need. Until next time may God bless you and all that you do. PH BGP

Harwood-Omohundro Family Gives Memorial Patio and Benches
Harriet J. Whitten Director of Development
Thanks to the generosity of Patrick Henry Trustee Elizabeth Omohundro Harwood, her husband Doug and her mother Ellen Leonard Omohundro, the front entrance to the administration building on the Brookneal Campus has a welcoming new look. The Harwoods and Mrs. Omohundro have given a patio which incorporates the United States flag, the Virginia flag, and the Patrick Henry bell along with a connecting walkway across the driveway leading to the front doors. The patio is given in memory of Richard Omohundro Harwood, eldest of the three Harwood sons, who died at age 16. Richard enjoyed soccer and basketball as well as playing checkers and chess
with his friends. He loved hunting and fishing on his family farm in Goochland, VA, enjoyed the companionship of his brothers Charles Douglas and Otway Preston, and spending time with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Richard A. Omohundro, who lived next door. Richard had a keen interest in spiritual things as he studied the Bible and asked many questions about God and His son, Jesus. He was a sophomore at Piedmont Christian School when he passed away in 1989. In addition to the patio, the HarwoodOmohundro Family has also given two beautiful benches adorned with the new Patrick Henry logo for the front porch. One bench is a memorial to Richard while the other is in memory of Elizabeth’s father Richard A. Omohundro. We are grateful to the Harwood-Omohundro Family for these very meaningful gifts which not only help welcome guests to our main campus, but also help us remember the important places that family and young people play in the lives of all of us. Buy A Brick and Honor Someone Special In celebration of Patrick Henry Boys & Girls Homes’ 50th Anniversary, we have initiated a Commemorative Brick Program to provide a lasting tribute to individuals and groups who are special to Patrick Henry. Each brick paves the way to Patrick Henry’s future and allows the donor to recognize a deceased family member or friend, honor a special person or people, or commemorate a special occasion. Commemorative bricks will be installed in the Memorial Patio in front of the administration building on the Brookneal Campus. Think about it, each time you visit the Patio, you will be reminded of those who have played an important role in the history of this special place. What better way to provide a lasting memory on the Patrick Henry campus than to see the names of individuals, organizations, and others who have made their marks on the lives of the children and families served by this ministry. We invite you to purchase a commemorative brick or bricks, the proceeds from which will support the ministries of Patrick Henry Boys and Girls Homes. Naming dedication ceremonies will be held in the Spring and Fall each year. Each brick contains three lines of copy with up to 18 spaces in each line (includes spacing and punctuation). Bricks are $500 each and may be reserved by completing the order form provided. Brick order deadlines are November 1 and May 1. For questions or further information about the Commemorative Brick Program, please contact Harriet Whitten at 434-239-1139 or hwhitten@patrickhenry.org.
