4 Anyone Can Whittle Simple Tomte Move over, shelf elves! This easy-carve tomte is bound to become the prankster of the household. He has minimal features—making him a wonderful project for beginner carvers—but still includes plenty of fun movement, thanks to tall, curvy hat, round nose, and thick, wavy beard. Have fun with the design and make your own, and then have fun moving him around the house for a bit of mischievous merriment! Getting Started Transfer the pattern onto the blank using graphite paper and pencil, and then cut it out with a band saw. Before you begin carving, make sure your tools are sharp. Keep them sharp as you go with periodic stropping. MATERIALS Basswood, 2" (5.1cm) square: 6" (15.2cm) long Pencil or marker Graphite paper Acrylic paints, such as Apple Barrel®: marsh green; such as tompte red; such as DecoArt® Americana®: light buttermilk Finish, such as Howard Feed-N-Wax® Paper towels TOOLS Carving knife V-tool (optional) Paintbrushes: assorted Shoe brush: horsehair Always wear carving glove and thumb guard. The photos were taken without them to clearly show hand and knife positions. ! 8 9 Anyone Can Whittle Simple Tomte Painting and finishing. When cutting in the hair and beard texture, make lazy S-cuts that vary in depth and never cross one another. The key is to be as random as possible. 11 12 Simple Tomte Patterns Shape the nose. Use the knife to round the nose into ball. Shape and gently round the edge of the hat brim all the way around. Mark the toes. Round the big toes, and then add three fat toes on each side of the big toes, instead of crowding in four little ones. Use the knife to shape the feet. Add small V-cuts to separate the toes. Add smile. Draw the mouth, and then turn these lines into stop cuts. Use V-cuts to remove material inside the lines. 8 9 10 Instead of ditching your food waste, why not whittle it into a unique piece of jewelry? —By Anna Prikazchikova Anyone Can Whittle Avocado Pit Owl This owl pendant is simple project for carvers who are new to the craft, and unique enough to entice experienced carvers to try something new. Plus, when you’re carving an avocado pit, there’s a lot of room for creativity and individual expression. Copy the pattern exactly, or add your own variations to the shape of the eyes, head, body, and wings. Gift this one-of-a-kind pendant to special someone—or keep it for yourself! Getting Started Prepare the blank. Remove the pit from the avocado. Let it rest for few days (see Tip at right). Peel off the thin layer of brown skin, and then find the seam that divides the pit in half. Separate the halves by inserting your blade between them and carefully twisting the knife. Once there is a gap, you can “open” the pit with your fingers. Avocado pit Pen Sandpaper: 220-grit Finish, such as Danish oil 1/32” (1mm)-dia. Napkins or paper towels Carving knife, such as X-Acto® Paintbrush A Note on Discoloration The steel of your blade might react with the juice of the pit and leave dark strokes on the pit. This is fine. Also, it’s likely that you will see pit change to a darker color as it begins to oxidize. Do not be concerned—this is also normal part of the process. Sharpening a Knife
9 CARVING woodcarvingillustrated.com Light pressure on the push stroke. Coarse stone sharpening marks. Marker ink. Unsharpened Pull the knife across the stone, working away from the cutting edge. Without changing the angle of the knife blade on the stone, bring the blade forward. This creates long oval-shaped path for the blade. Use firm pressure on the pull portion of the oval and light pressure on the return push stroke. Continue for 15 to 20 strokes. 4 Inspect your work. Hold the knife edge over sheet of white paper. Check along the edge of the blade to see how much of the ink remains, and where that ink falls along the edge. Any remaining ink shows where the knife blade has not touched the sharpening stone. The coarse stone also leaves visible, distinct working lines in the metal of the blade. In the photo above, you can see the manufacturing lines of the blade, the ridges left from the coarse stone, and the unworked front cutting edge. If you have marking ink along your cutting edge, return to your coarse stone and work the knife blade in 15 to 20 more oval passes as described in Steps 2 through 4. Use the same amount of air space (about two credit cards) between the blunt, back edge of the knife and the stone as you did in the first set of coarse stone work to retain the same bevel angle. 6
SharpeningCarvingToolsforBeginners Mark the edge. Using a wide-point permanent marker, draw a line along both sides of the cutting edge of a bench knife. You will use the pen line to check the accuracy of both the coarse- and fine-stone beveling. 1 Set the bevel angle. For narrow, low bevel, as used in relief carving, lay the bench knife against the stone. Lift the back (blunt) edge of the knife above the stone to the thickness of two credit cards. 2

Carve a deep groove to separate the upper eyelid from the eye socket with a small V-tool. 19 Sketch in the eyebrows. The circles drawn earlier are only the rough shape of the eye sockets. Refine the overall shape of the eyebrows to make bright, large, open eyes. 18 Face 19 Deepen the corners of the eyeball. Use a carving knife and a 1/8" V-tool. This helps add shadow and helps make the eyeball appear round under the eyelids. Use a detail knife to carefully smooth and round the eyeball. 20 21 NEW 7 Study Sticks Now Available! 79 Font Templates Photocopyat100%. 32 Lettering on Wood, Paper, and Leather Serif Fonts A serif font is when small accent—taking the form of a curve, straight line, or block—is added to the corners of each letter. You often see this font used in print because the extra element can make the letter easier to read. This can also be used for when the letters are meant to look more formal. The Abril Fatface font uses both an extended straight line and an inner curve for letter arms, making this serif font. The wide stems of this particular font are perfect for shaded or texture fills. This piece uses all lowercase letters from the Bevan font (pages 76–77). Here, each letter uses an extended block at the base of the letter’s stem. TOLL FREE: 844-307-3677 / FoxChapelB2B.com
