“Are
“Our story sounds made up. But sometimes truth is better than fiction. I know it is for us.”
4 The Blind Woodsman Our story sounds made up. But sometimes truth is better than fiction. I know it is for us. It was early July of 2012, and a friend of mine had told me about a volunteer opportunity to paint a piano for a fundraiser at a local piano repair school. She knew was always looking for something to keep myself busy. Growing up in the area, was very familiar with the school. They also called it “The Piano Hospital” because it was a repair business as well. also knew that the students who attended the school all had one thing in common: they were all blind. was painting a small spinet piano, blocking the doorway to a classroom. I thought was the only person in the whole school beside couple administrative folks on the other side of the building. heard some shuffling and looked up to see a tall, handsome man with a white cane bump into the side of the piano and place his hand on top of it, smack dab into the wet paint. I was a little embarrassed and could tell he was too. He held his hand up, smiling and asking, “Did do much damage?” Luckily, the paint had been drying for a bit so there wasn’t much on his hand. He had a beautiful smile with big dimples, and his eyes were totally
closed. apologized and stood up from the floor where had been working. Putting my paint-covered hand out to shake his, smiled and waited. And then it dawned on me, he couldn’t see my hand hovering in the air in anticipation. “My name is Anni.” “I’m John. Nice to meet you.” He wiped his hand on his khaki carpenter pants just in case he had gotten paint on it during our meet-cute.
“No, it’s okay. The more, the merrier. Would be nice to have some company, it gets a little quiet around here during the summer.” looked behind me, realizing he had a workstation already set up for a project he was in the middle of. John gracefully glided past me, using his white cane to navigate the tight space of the classroom. “Bridle straps,” he said. Sensing my confusion, he laughed and said again, “Bridle straps. It’s the project I’m working on.” He held up what looked like a dangly, bendy match stick. Its thin, white strip was capped off with a short, oblong, red tip. “They make it easier to remove and reinstall the action from a piano.” At this point, he had already sat on a tall stool by his workstation, beginning to trim the end of each strap with a razor blade.
you working in here? can find another space if it’s too crowded.”
John still has the first bowl he ever made. John has always loved working with his hands, so woodworking was a natural fit. John has an amazing memory and can remember by the shape, thickness, or uniqueness of the boards or pieces of wood.

O
Consider all the worlds Thy Hands have made . . Have you not known? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary, his understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength. Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; but they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint. —Isaiah 40:28–31 (RSV) Design Originals, www.D-Originals.com —Genesis 1:1 (KJV) God created the heaven and the earth. Then sings my soul, My Savior God, to Thee, How great Thou art, How great Thou art.

Young Explorers Trees is perfect for scouts, young outdoor enthusiasts, naturalists, and budding arborists. Includes an introduction with information on what a tree is, the two main categories of trees, names of trees, indigenous trees, where different species grow and where and what to look for when identifying trees: the trunk’s bark, the leaves, the fruit and the bud. 50 trees are identified by a physical description, the leaves, flowers, and fruit and includes something special about that particular species, such as its leaves would make a good herbal tea, or that it is very versatile. Children also learn which trees are toxic and how to recognize dangerous plants.
Young Explorers Wild Plants
Jean-Marc Lord, Andre Pelletier
A great field guide for young explorers, including scouts, young outdoor enthusiasts, naturalists, budding botanists and ecologists. Book includes 50 species of wild plants. The wild plants are broken into four categories “World of Plants,” “Plants to Avoid,” “Plants of the Woods,” and “City and Field Plants” and are color coded for easy reference. The plants are identified by its most common name, other common names, and its scientific (Latin) name so there can be no errors in identifying the plant along with a physical description. Any plant that is poisonous is marked as such, and if there are two or more plants in the book that are similar, a table explains their subtle differences.
