PERFORMANCE SNOWSHOES

Yukon Charlie’s is about performance and recreation. We design our entire snow line with key elements to ensure consumers make the most of their winter experience. We know snowshoes are essential for getting around in the snow, whether you’re walking on a flat terrain, hiking on rolling snow, or climbing a mountain. Our line features “something for everyone.”

Meeting everyone’s outdoor expectations. Our dynamic line of snowshoes incorporates the key elements of snowshoeing. Frame styles, binding types, and crampon needs are the feature factors we consider in the development of every snowshoe. Overall, from the recreational hiker to the adventurer climber, we’ve got them covered (not in snow!).

PERFORMANCE ELEMENTS

FRAME OPTIONS

Our line features three types of frames: aluminum, carbon, and composite. Aluminum frames are light weight and strong, carbon frames are extremely light weight and stronger, where composite hard plastic frames are durable, but a bit noisy on snow.

DECK TYPES

Decking can be made of plastic, coated nylon, polyurethane or other synthetic materials. Most of our frames are either a coated nylon called Tech-Weave or HDPE (high density polyurethane). HDPE is our thickest and most durable decking option.

Snowshoes feature teeth, similar to cleats, called crampons. These “metal teeth” help you grip the snow as you hike. There are three types of materials used to make crampons:

• Aluminum – very common, lightweight

• Manganese Steel – stronger than aluminum, known for high impact strength

• Stainless Steel – stronger and feature better functioning, highly expensive

AXLE AND BINDING SYSTEMS

One of the essential elements of a snowshoe is the binding system: this helps keep your shoe securely in place as you walk on the snow. The type of axle system on your snowshoe determines how your foot flexes. For climbing, you’ll require more rotation in your step as you ascend upwards. For hiking, you’ll demand less movement to keep your stride. Some snowshoes offer a balance of both when you’re hiking in multiple terrains.

BINDINGS, AXLES, CRAMPONS

Snowshoes come in a variety shapes, sizes and of course, materials. These shoes are designed for use on multiple terrains.

• Flat Terrain - Perfect for beginners. Designed for easy walking and ideal for families.

• Rolling Terrain – Best for hikers and backpackers. Designed for hiking on steep terrain and are suitable for most conditions.

• Mountain Terrain – for advanced hikers and backcountry snowboarders. These types of snowshoes are made with climbing style crampons and rugged bindings.

How you secure your foot to the snowshoe is determine by the type of binding you choose. The binding type dictates the ease-of-use in placing your foot on the snowshoe and securing it. However, how you walk in the snowshoe is dependent on the type of axle system the shoe has built in. These two essential elements work together as you’re hiking or walking.

BINDINGS

There are many styles of bindings to secure your foot onto the snowshoe. These systems range from easy-to-reach dials to a simple, one pull executions. Yukon Charlie’s snowshoes feature the following types of systems:

• 1-Pull – Minimalist binding

• 1-Pull SPIN – Minimalist with dial binding system

• Spin by Northwave - Dial binding system with integrated toe hold

• FastFit – 1-Pull (easy pull) bindings

• Quick Clik II – Ratchet bindings

• Ripcord – Easy-Pull bindings (youth models only)

AXLE TYPES

Yukon Charlie’s boasts a wide range of axle types. However, essentially there are two specific axle constructions: Fixed Axle are connected with heavy duty rubber or bands that do not pivot much. This type of binding brings the snowshoe tail up with each step for a comfortable stride. Floating, or Rotating Bindings, pivot under the balls of your feet where they attach to the decking. Floating bindings vary among models: some bindings are attached with metal rods and pivot 90 degrees or more. The pivoting allows the end of the snowshoes to shred snow as you walk, which reduces leg fatigue.

SNOWSHOE CRAMPONS
