Pathway connect different levels. Circulation and path ways form landscape and exterior open space. Sunken garden, protect people from wind.
People are above the ground but have an under ground feeling. Landform approaches.

All the buildings are on the north side of the site, in order to create a big open place on the south side. A north-south path and a west-east path were created to form the major circulation path. Create view points. Out door open space.
The inside circulation and outside circulations are connected. Respond to the two major nodes.

Landform Program
. Roof structure is a combination of gardens and part of the circulation.
. The roof top offers a particular view of the ship repairing yard.
.This roof has four feet walls inside. When people sit down, it’s a closed place, but when people stand up, they have a 360 degree view.
. Marketing areas, 20 by 90 feet rental spaces.
. The museum and the market connect under ground. . Museum space one. . Museum space two. . The higher rental places are for formal restaurants, and private events. . Museum store and CafĂŠ.

Land form approach. Press down the land along the building. The wall of the museum goes down along the cut surface and become the flat ground surface.
The outdoor gallery and the court yard is connected underground. It offers a for people to go in to the ground and come back to the ground surface.
. The thearter is 16 feet below the sunken garden, and 26 feet below ground level.
. One of the out door gallery is 10 feet below the ground level, in order to protect the art work and also provide a less windy place.
. The organic garden also below ground level. It visible to the public but not open to the public.

The three major entrances are all “ V “ shape openings. They are inviting people to go in to the site. The three openings are also relatively small. I want to use these narrow entry ways to contrast people’s feeling.

From plan view, I put the programmatic places all around the site. From section view. I created these attractions to make people go from the very bottom all the way to the top of the buildings. I used both plan and section to organize the space in order to get people move around and explore the whole site.

The view points are intentionally created further away from the view. This is another strategy to engage people with exploration. People can see each other from two roof gardens. This create the connection, even conversation of people who are on different side of the site, or different level of the buildings.
In my sectional program organization, I have different attractions on different level. For example, roof garden, second floor outdoor dinning, sunken garden and underground theater. This forces people to explore in six directions.

My major design language is the over hangings. The roof structure transform in to vertical element. It offers shade and also hiding the exterior circulation stairs.
One of my significant design detail is the water feature. It is the beginning of the major exterior circulation from the west side. People walk over the water and goes down into the ground, after a 20 feet dark tunnel, the pathway introduce the open sunken garden.

Learning outcome
. How to develop details without loosing control of the big picture. . Urban design is based on responding to the history, urban actor, urban fabric, values, vision and so on. . How to use circulation to form space. . Land form approach.
. How to read a program and analyze a program. . Design process: program analysis, conceptual design, using section drawings and plan drawing to further develop design, 3D modeling, and again refine, refine, refine,refine, refine………………… . How to draw floor plans and sections that reflect the space organization and circulation. . How to deal with positive space and negative spaces. . Working with plan and section together, using only plan can make the design flat and less special. . Always develop the big idea or the main concept fist, then develop in to detail. At the same time asking myself if it is supporting my big concept, if not, make it up, if cant make it up, stop doing it just for the pretty form. . How to balance creative design and “realistic” design. . Public open space also need careful design, either put in landscape architecture or connect it to the major architecture.
. Choose one or two priority if I’m too over whelmed, this ties back to the big idea and concept comes first.
I wish this is the end, but I know there is never an end.
