ANCHORING & MOORING

Anchoring & Mooring Anchoring, mooring, tying up, all require certain techniques and appropriate ground tackle to ensure safe and secure anchoring is achieved. Basic anchoring consists of common sense, determining the location, dropping the anchor, laying out the rope and chain and assessing where the vessel ends up. Every situation will be different but the basics remain the same, determine a suitable location, survey the surrounds (GPS, chart or sounder often confirm your visual view), be mindful of prevailing wind, tide and other vessels. If the location is good, approach from the stronger down wind or down current and as you arrive at the desired location the vessel should be stopped and the anchor quickly lowered,

remaining under control, creating a relatively straight lie for the rope and/or chain. When feeding out the rope or chain a general rule of thumb in generally smooth water is to let out a minimum of three times the depth of water to set the anchor and between five and seven times the depth if you are to stay at anchor and the surrounds permit. The vessel should then be gently put astern to help set the anchor and to provide indications of possible dragging. If the anchor continues to drag, or sets after having dragged too far, it should be retrieved and moved back to the desired position or another location chosen.

Self align anchor Plough anchor

Sand anchor

Reef anchor

What constitutes the right anchor for the type of bottom and what’s best, rope or chain? Sand anchor: The most popular of all anchors. Suitable for use in mud or sand. Generally fitted with a retrieval eye for ease of removal if snagged. Stows flat and generally finished in hot dipped galvanising for longevity. Plough anchor: Ideal for sand and mud bottoms. Provides safe and sure anchoring for heavier craft. Generally fitted with a retrieval eye for ease of removal if snagged. Lead filled tip aids in setting the anchor. Generally finished in hot dipped galvanising but also popular in stainless steel. Self align anchor: Suited to sand and mud bottoms. Self align anchors roll upright, irrespective of initial drop attitude, within

Chain: The primary advantage of chain is its inherent weight and that it will not chafe over aggressive sea beds as will rope. The obvious disadvantage when primarily stored in an anchor locker in the bow is its weight. In light winds chain gives a perfect horizontal pull to the anchor and the best holding. In moderate wind, its weight provides for a perfect shock absorbing effect but in strong winds can become tight, increase the jarring effect and possibly dislodge the anchor.

two shank lengths of engaging the seabed. High holding power is obtained by the highly efficient fluke and shank design. Low retrieval force results from the short, broad, single fluke. Retrieval force is generally 30% of the prior holding power. Generally finished in hot dipped galvanising but also popular in cast 316 grade stainless steel. Reef anchors: Suited to temporary reef anchoring. If snagged in reef conditions the prongs are designed to straighten with the retrieval load. Vessels anchored with reef anchors should not be left unattended. Finished in hot dipped galvanising.

Rope: The primary advantages of rope is its inherent elasticity which creates a shock absorbing effect and its relative light weight. Common types include three strand ‘silver’ (polyethylene staple), three strand nylon (premium rope with excellent elasticity and recoil) and three strand polyester. With the introduction of large drum type rope spoolers an eight or sixteen plait rope is often employed for its non-kink characteristics.

Sea Anchors

Traditional hard holding anchors with strong flukes for holding in difficult conditions. Flukes quickly dig into even hard bottom conditions and remain snug. Every anchor is equipped with a 30mm trip ring in the base. When used amongst rocks, the anchor line is commonly secured to the trip ring, with only light lashing around the line and the top ring. If snagged, a tight pull on the anchor line usually breaks the lashing, reversing the anchor to pull free.

Collapsible reinforced PVC sea anchor. Supplied complete with rope towing bridle and stainless steel ring. Attachment point fitted to the base for ease of tripping. Ideal for fishing boats to slow and control wind drift rate.

EVA Flat Foam Fenders

Moulded Fenders

Made from EVA foam that won’t absorb water. Rectangular shape for use as a conventional fender or screw mounting either singly or in series on marinas and jetties. Doubles as a cockpit or dinghy seat cushion.

Manufactured from a combination of TPR and EVA plastics these traditionally shaped fenders feature raised ribs to prevent rolling along hull. Rope attachment points at either end. Pneumatic energy absorbing construction. Non inflatable fenders are air filled but do not have a valve to allow pressure adjustment. Economical protection for trailer boats.

Patented combination boarding step and fender. It is manufactured from the same injection moulded PVC construction as Dan heavy duty inflatable fenders. The unique shape provides hull protection as well as a boarding step. The high topsides of many modern vessels make boarding difficult from either a marina finger or from small dinghies. The combined fender and step feature allow it to be rigged before entering a marina, allowing the crew to safely and easily step onto the pontoon without resorting to leaping.

Anchor Retriever

Anchor Mate

Used in conjunction with existing anchoring tackle, the stainless steel ring fits around the anchor rode for deep water anchoring. Motoring forward at 5-6 knots lifts the anchor to the float ring. When the anchor chain has fully passed through the ring the anchor is held at the surface. This allows easy retrieval of the anchor rode without the continuous weight of ground tackle.

Anchoring device made from extruded aluminium with welded ring. Designed for tinnies, it allows the anchor to be set beam-on to the boat. The aluminium channel simply hooks in at any position along a tinnie gunwale. Suited for fishing in protected waters only.

Dan Multifunction Dock Fender System

ANCHORING & MOORING

One product, multiple use options! This new innovative heavy duty dock fender system from Dan Fender provides a versatile and significantly enhanced level of topside protection for all boats when docking. The dock fender gives superior protection against damage when berthing by providing a true inflatable fender buffer action. The unique design allows the multifunction dock fender to be adapted to suit most marina, pontoon, dock or wharf applications. The one piece adjustable design allows for the user to easily shape the dock fender to any angle up to 90°. An additional feature is the incorporation of an integral fender hanging point. This allows the fixture of an optional 141502 fender to be easily added, providing additional protection. Four heavy duty top and integral side fixing points provide safe and secure attachment no matter what the application. Features: • Pre-inflated providing a low pressure fender for boat protection • Suitable for marina, pontoon, dock or wharf applications • Top and side bolt through points for secure fastening • Extra deep design for additional boat protection • Integrated central mounting point for optional 141502 Dan Fender • Simple and easily adjusted design to suit angles to 90° • Metal inflation valve 180mm

When selecting a mooring buoy for your required application please apply the following recommendations: Dan fenders test mooring buoys to their maximum values. Buoys/fenders are completely submerged in freshwater when buoyancy tests are conducted. We therefore recommend 60% of the value stated as the units working capacity. All measurements and buoyancies are calculated with a pressure of 0.15 bar (2 psi) at approximately 20ºC (68ºF)

Dan Mooring Buoy

Dan Fender Hand Pump

Injection moulded from tough flexible red vinyl. Features metal inflation valve, large pick-up handle and solid injection moulded eye attachment point.

Due to most inflatable fenders having a form of internal valve the problem of controlled inflation arises. Some hand pumps not designed for this purpose can often cause damage by pushing the valve inside the fender or buoy. The Dan Fender hand-pump is designed and manufactured to fit into the centre of the metal Dan Fender valve and most other common fenders for easy and gentle inflation. This hand pump is small and compact at only 200mm long and has an inflation action on the in and out stroke.

Silver Rope

Shock Absorbing Mooring Line

Silver rope (polyethylene staple) is the most popular general purpose rope. 4-12mm is soft medium lay for ease of splicing. 14mm and larger is a medium lay to suit anchor capstan winches while still being spliceable. Ends can be heat sealed to prevent unravelling, U.V. stabilised, resistant to grease and oil. High abrasion resistance, non absorbent with good grip for handling. Silver rope is a floating line.

These premium mooring lines combine the appearance and high strength of double braid polyester with a unique and integral stretch, shock absorbing section. Virtually eliminates the sudden jolt when vessels swing to the end of mooring line reach. All black jacket, 300mm soft loop at one end.

Braided Rope Lanyards All black U.V. stabilised polyester braid, pre spliced with 300mm of soft loop at one end. High strength and smart aesthetics for the discerning boat owner. Uses include mooring lines, painter line and fender lanyards.

Nylon Three Strand Rope Polyamide fibres are used to manufacture this three strand rope, which gives it exceptional strength, extension and recovery. Having easily twice the strength of silver rope and the ability to repeatedly elongate safely by approximately 20-30%, makes this a most suitable rope for anchoring, mooring or towing where shock absorption is required. Non-floating, U.V. stabilised, resistant to grease and oil, soft grip and good knot holding are just some of nylon’s advantages. Ends can be heat welded to prevent unravelling.
