PFD’s Definition
PFD’s, BAGS & BOOTS
PFD Type 1. PFD (Personal Flotation Device) Type 1, is one that complies with the requirements of the Australian Standards approval code 1512 PFD-1 or 4758-100. To comply with these standards the garment must provide a high level of buoyancy, maintaining the wearer in a safe floating position, i.e. with the body inclined backwards from the vertical with the nose and mouth clear of the water. They are generally recommended for use in pleasure boats which may venture beyond sheltered waters or where the wearer may be at risk of sustaining injuries which may impede the wearer’s ability to swim. Some State Authorities require these jackets to be worn in certain situations or by determined age. Ensure to consult your State Authority for full details and requirements.

A PFD Type 3 garment is one that complies with the requirements of the Australian Standards approval code 2260 or 4758-50S. It provides a similar amount of buoyancy to that of a PFD Type 2, but is permitted to carry a wider range of style colours. PFD Type 3’s are generally recommended for use by water skiers and jet skiers in sheltered waters where assistance is immediately at hand. Ensure to consult your State Authority for full details and requirements. General Comments: A personal flotation device will help you float in the water, but it cannot guarantee safety or protection from drowning.
PFD Type 2. A PFD Type 2 garment is one that complies with PFD-2 & the requirements of the PFD-3 Australian Standards approval code 1499 or 4758-50. It is required to provide sufficient buoyancy to assist the wearer to maintain his or her head above water, but not as much as a PFD Type 1 lifejacket. It is less bulky than a PFD Type 1, making it more suitable for applications when the wearer needs to move around or swim. A PFD Type 2 is generally recommended for dinghy sailors and canoeists etc, who are required to wear a PFD for extended periods of time.
Inflatable Auto Pfd
- Type 1
Inflatable PFD type 1, automatically activated 150N Inflatable bladder, approved to AS1512 or 4758-150. Slim and designed for continuous wear, this PFD is ideal for all recreational boating. Inflatable body features 5mm radio frequency welded seams with a heavy duty PVC protective cover over the CO² cylinder and firing mechanism. The 38mm wide, webbing back strap includes a heavy duty adjustable side release buckle. An oral inflation tube, whistle and 25mm “D” ring lanyard attachment point are also included. This PFD will automatically inflate if the wearer enters the water. It can also be orally inflated by blowing into the oral inflation tube or manually inflated by pulling on a “rip cord”. If inflated by any method other then the oral inflation tube, the jacket needs to be rearmed before it can be put back into service. An annual service record chart is printed on the inflation bladder.
Special Protection for Children: Pay Special Attention to Children: It is difficult for a child to float in a face up position because of the distribution of body mass and because the child may tend to panic in an unfamiliar environment. However, a properly designed PFD of the correct size will keep a child’s mouth and nose clear of the water. A child should be taught how to put on the PFD and be encouraged to become familiar with its feel in the water. It is important that the child is comfortable and understands what the PFD is for and how it works.
