Electrical Cooling Compressors Explained
REFRIGERATION
There are two main types of DC cooling compressors: (1) Piston Compressor The piston compressor, as used by Isotherm refrigeration units, is more efficient than the swing compressor option. The electrical piston compressor utilises a crank-shaft, connecting rod and piston configuration, driven by a highly efficient brushless, three-phase, electric motor. The three-phase current is created in a small microprocessor, achieving power savings of between 20 - 50% compared to swing compressors operating from a regular 12 volt power supply. On hot days when refrigeration is needed most, the pressure on top of the piston increases. The mechanical nature of the piston compressor ensures displacement of the same volume of gas on every stroke of the piston, guaranteeing high efficiency and excellent cooling, even in high temperatures.
SWING TYPE
PISTON TYPE
(2) Swing Compressor The swing compressor consists of an electric solenoid with a compressor piston attached to the end. Alternating the current in the coil causes the piston to move up and down, thereby compressing the gas. As the temperature increases, so does the pressure on top of the piston. In a swing compressor, this increased pressure prevents the solenoid piston from travelling it’s full stroke. Eventually the pressure increases until the piston is hardly moving at all while still consuming maximum power. This results in very low efficiency.
Classic Compact Systems
- Air Cooled
12-24 volt fan cooled refrigeration units suitable for mounting in new or existing ice boxes. The fan cooled compressor can be mounted up to two metres away from the evaporator box or plate. Box type ‘O’ evaporators provide an internal freezer compartment as well as cooling the entire refrigeration compartment. Units are supplied pre-gassed with re-openable quick fit connectors for ease of installation. A choice of ‘O’, ‘L’ and flat evaporators are available. Flat evaporators can be carefully formed to suit box size. Low voltage cut off and radio interference suppression are fitted as standard. Temperature is adjusted by a rotary thermostat incorporating an on/off switch. Connection of the evaporator plate to the compressor requires only a 30mm hole to be drilled in the ice box compartment wall. Utilises R134A ozone friendly refrigeration gas.

REFRIGERATION
12-24 volt power sensing refrigeration unit, suitable for mounting in new or existing cool boxes where battery power is at a premium. The ASU (Automatic Start Up) system senses when surplus power is available, during engine, alternative power or genset operation etc, and speeds up the fan cooled compressor to rapidly freeze the eutectic type holding plate. As available power decreases, the ASU reduces power consumption accordingly. Low voltage cut-off and radio interference suppression are fitted as standard. Compressor unit comes complete with a fast fit mounting bracket for either vertical or horizontal mounting and three metres of pre-gassed tinned copper piping, incorporating re-openable quick-fit connectors. The stainless steel holding plate, with an average holding temperature of minus 9ÂşC, can be mounted at any angle high up in the cool box. Utilises R134A ozone friendly refrigeration gas.
Isotherm ASU has the Advantage Over Traditional Refrigeration Units When the engine is started, the compressor always operates in it’s high speed mode, thereby producing maximum refrigeration effect.
When sailing or with the engine stopped, the deeply frozen holding plate in the cool box supplies refrigeration. During this phase, the compressor is at a standstill and no battery power is consumed.
Only when the holding plate’s supply of refrigeration has been consumed to a pre-set level does the compressor start at low speed and for short periods only to maintain this level.

ASU/SP Systems
- Water Cooled
12-24 volt (SP) Self Pumping, seawater cooled refrigeration units suitable for mounting in new or existing cool boxes. Recommended for tropical conditions or installations where conventional air cooling of the compressor unit is not practical. These units have the power saving advantages of the ASU units, teamed with the even greater efficiency of SP (self pumping), seawater cooling. The compressor is cooled by a uniquely designed heat exchanger incorporated into the dual purpose through hull fitting which is most commonly used as the galley sink outlet. High efficiency and quiet operation is achieved through the full flow heat exchange that eliminates the requirement for compressor cooling fans or water pumps, both of which can contribute to substantial power drain. The through hull fitting is manufactured from salt water resistant brass with the internal heat exchanger being constructed from copper nickel alloy. There is a one metre, pre-gassed line from the through hull fitting to the compressor and a three metre line from the compressor to the eutectic type holding plate, both featuring re-openable quick fit connectors for ease of installation. The stainless steel holding plate, with an average holding temperature of minus 9ºC, can be mounted at any angle high up in the cool box. Cruise Matched Refrigerators and Freezer
REFRIGERATION
Cruise fridges and freezers have identical external sizing which enables them to be matched; either side by side or one on top of the other. This identical sizing provides the flexibility of combining fridges and/or freezers in either left or right hinged configurations to suit any galley lay out. The front door panel facia can be easily changed by the installer to suit individual decor, adding to the versatility of these units. Supplied standard as right hinged, but easily converted to left hinged if required. Powered by Danfoss compressor unit which accepts either 12 or 24VDC. The CR130 is a 130 litre, traditional combination fridge freezer. It includes an integral eight litre freezer compartment, three shelves and a vegetable bin. The door includes three shelves and is available in standard air cooled or ASU models. The CR130D is designed as a drinks fridge, without the freezer compartment. It is supplied as standard with the same shelf configuration as the CR130, however designated bottle racks (as pictured) are available as an option. The CR90F freezer unit has extra thick insulation resulting in the reduction in capacity to 90 litres. It has three shelves and four separate lids. 381912 flange available to suit all models for build in fit out.

REFRIGERATION
Isotherm evaporator plates, complete with two metres of pipe and re-openable quick-fit connectors are supplied as replacement parts. Although they are factory pre-gassed, the complete system must be evacuated and recharged with ozone friendly R134A refrigerant upon replacement to ensure correct operation. The evaporators are made of malleable aluminium, enabling them to be carefully shaped to suit virtually any cooler box configuration.

‘Spill Over’ Control Valve
Isotherm ASU Control Unit
This damper control valve is thermostatically controlled to open on demand and allow cool air from the freezer compartment to ‘spill over’ into the refrigerator section. No other parts or wiring are required as the control is actuated by the integral temperature probe. Allows the adjacent refrigeration section to the freezer to be fed cold air without the need for an extra evaporator plate.

Isotherm Travel Box
- Fridge Freezer
Stand alone portable refrigeration/freezer box. The Danfoss fan cooled compressor is located within the housing making the unit ideal for transfer between car, boat, van, camp site or barbecue. It operates on 12-24 volt and is manufactured from roto-moulded polyethylene with 50mm polyurethane foam insulation and is robust enough to be used as a seat or step. Features a removable lid for access in confined spaces. Recessed handles can also be used to secure the unit while travelling. It is designed to operate in outdoor conditions and will continue to operate in up to 50mm of water. Quick Release Compressor Mount Bracket
Danfoss compressor complete with condenser, tubing and quick connect couplings supplied as a replacement part for Isotherm refrigeration units. The 381834 compressor includes a fan. Although they are factory pre-gassed, the complete system must be evacuated and re-charged with ozone friendly R134A refrigerant upon replacement.
