THE UNUSED OPEN SPACES OF MALASAÑA ARE NOT ABLE TO ENTIRELY SOLVE THE PROBLEM OF LACK OF OPEN SPACE IN ZONE B. HOWEVER, THEY WOULD ALMOST TRIPLE THESE KIND OF SURFACE, MAKING A GREAT IMPACT ON PEOPLE’S QUALITY OF LIFE.

The roofs are open spaces very empty and available for wide range of proposals. They are interestiong because most of them are very close, so the future projects could be related with the ones of the other roofs. We consider this spaces as more private areas. They belong to a building and for access to them you have to cross throught it. This is not a disadvantage, but it can influece the decision of what to do in them.

GEMS/ CHURCHES
Calle de Gra
Churches are spaces with a lot of potential. They have a big area, they are complete buildings, facing the street and in good conditions. We think that their beautiful interior is completly hidden for the public and this must be show. But the problem that we think that they have is that because of their religious content they could not be as flexible as other spaces for host any kind of proposal.

DIAMONDS BROUGHT TO LIGHT...?
Name San Antonio de los Alemanes Location Calle de Corredera Baja de San Pablo - Calle de Puebla Category Church Owner Brotherhood of the Refuge Stories 6 Geometry
Area 470 m2 Built surface 2820 m3
History
This church is said to be one of the most beautiful temples in Madrid. Although its exterior is sober and goes unadverted, once the visitor goes in it is overwhelmed by the feeling of being inside a Baroque painting: most of its interior is covered by a huge fresco. It was founded by Philip III in 1607, as a hospital for modest Portuguese patients (when Portugal belonged to Spain), with an adjacent chapel. A century later, the administration of the building was granted to the Brotherhood of the Refuge, who is still the administrator nowadays. They carried out a labour of feeding and taking care of the poor. The priest and two helpers would walk the neighbourhood streets chiming a bell, looking for beggars in need of sanitary help or accommodation. The refuge was then “famous” for its stinking smell.
Current situation
Currently, the refuge work as a social diner, and some neighbours devote a couple of days per week to administrating a charity system of clothing interchange. However, its social role is by far much less relevant than it used to be. The church is one of the hidden jewels of Malasaña and of the whole Madrid. Most of the neighbours have never got in, and are therefore ignorant of their beauty and artistic interest. The church does not allow visits out of liturgy hours, during which on has to be extremely quiet and discrete.

History
Current situation
It is one of the most beautiful examples of Madrilian religious architecture of the XVII century. Its baroque façade is actually one of the few that survived the Civil War.
It is currently taken care of by the Opus Dei. The space is used to host most of their activities: seminaries, meetings, associations, and of course liturgies. The tomb of an important personality for this congregation is in this church. It is also frequently used by the Polish community in Madrid to host their spiritual celebrations. San Martin de Tours is one of the most centric churches in Madrid, and yet generally unknown.

The proposal here does not consist on changing the gems in any way, as they are perfect (yet undiscovered) pieces of art and history. On the contrary, the intervention aims to make them visible and attract people, both neighbours and tourists into it. A path of tiny led lamps will be embedded between the floor tiles, connecting both churches between them and with Gran Via through Concepci贸n Arenal street. It being strange and unexpected will make people follow the path and discover the gem. Additionally, the baroque front of the church will be illuminated, to make an outstanding image that, with time, may become a landmark of the area.

This buildings are in a very bad state of conservation. Most of them with critical structure conditions, almost in ruins. They are potential spaces because of their size, they have big areas for host any kind of project. Of most of them we don’t know why they are empty or abandoned. In facebook people ask for gyms or spaces for leisure in the area, could this places answer to this necesities?

Name Cines Luna Location Calle Luna, nº2 Category Cinema and site of movie producer company Owner Solder family until 2007. Current owner unknown Stories 4 Geometry
Area 440 m2
unused
Built surface 1760 m2
History
Film lover and producer Emiliano Piedra built the cinema in the middle 80s. When he died in 1991, he was in great debt. In 2005, Cines Luna was closed to the public. When the group of squatters Rompamos el Silencio broke in during the Social Fight Week , they found a collection of film prices, photographs, affiches and kilometres of movie rolls in the offices of Piedra’s producer company, International Films Española, that was on top of the cinema. In January 2008, Triball declared to El Mundo that they considered the transformation of Cines Luna as “the origin of the project and base of the change process”. However, the owner of the premises did not agree to the their proposals.
Current situation
Sources
The collective Left Hand Rotation have used the cinema for protest interventions: to denounce the invasion of security cameras in the Plaza de la Luna, they selected a series of films about social control, drugs and prostitution, printed their affiches and placed them where the affiches used to be when the cinema was active. The act was called “Left Hand Rotation re-opens Cines Luna”. Closed to the public, but apparently in good condition. Cines Luna are very linked to the imaginary and the popular culture of the area. It has even given a new name to the plaza next to it. Centro de Medios (centrodemedios.org) Okupa Tú También (okupatutambien.net) El Mundo (elmundo.com)

Plots are a space with a lot of potential. They are big open spaces at street level. They are interesting because they can be very versatil. In the case a proposal needs to close then they could be more private spaces, or you can open them completly and have a space that could be as public as a street or a plaza. Very accessible to any kind of people.

sports centers civic and social centers, they mentioned Corredera 20 as an example, and it has been recently evicted. schools parking places, they spoke about the new parking of Serrano as a possible solution for Malasaña public disposition of the plaza, the plaza seems to be of public use but when they want to make something the city council does not let them, and when it appears a private entity they allow them to make any kind of event in the plazas.
Their point of view: - It is positive to create a ”barrio marca”, change its identity and its name.- Miguel Angel Santa
image of Triball from the point of view of neighbors
- which kind of plaza is triball searching for? one for the neighbours or one for tourists?.- Isabel Rodríguez Bobillo
-It seems that they are saying ”que se vayan los feos”.-
- It is good for the neighbourhood clean its face, for make public spaces for everyone. Now with the prostitutes its not good for the kids to play in the street.- Juan Jose Cigarrán
- People live where they can not where they want.-
- Prostitution has to be treat as any other work. In your work they don't expulse you of your place, but they are expulsing the prostitutes from the street, their place for work. Camen Briz
- Attract capitalist society and tourism before neighbours.-
