INTRODUCING THE GCMA ARTIST OF THE YEAR FINALISTS Artist of the Year is proudly sponsored by Southern Cross University.
Words by Anthony Gebhardt | Photography by Georgia Wallace
The Artist Of The Year award, this year sponsored by Southern Cross University, is one of the most coveted accolades to be bestowed upon a lucky (and highly worthy) Gold Coast act as part of the GCMA’s. Last year’s winner, country rock king-pin Casey Barnes, is once again in the running for the gong, not that he’s feeling the pressure in any way, mind you; “To be honest, I'm just extremely grateful to be nominated again! We've got SO much incredible talent here on the Goldie now, across every genre... there’s lots to be proud about!” Despite the challenges of Covid, the ARIA nominee and two-time Golden Guitar finalist has had an impressive 12 months, signing a deal with Michael Gudinski and Mushroom Publishing, releasing a new album, the critically acclaimed 10 song opus, ‘Town Of A Million Dreams’, which smashed it out of the park on a commercial level, catapulting him to the top of music charts across the country. The album’s first two singles, ‘Sparks Fly’ and ‘We’re Good Together’, held down the number one spot on the singles charts for seven weeks and five weeks respectively. To be part of the excitement of discovering who takes out the gongs at this year’s GCMAs, be sure to get along to the awards ceremony, taking place on Saturday 4 September at HOTA, Home Of The Arts. All of the action will be kicking off from midday with red carpet arrivals followed by award presentations and live performances from award finalists Beckah Amani, Karl S. Williams, Mass Sky Raid and DENNIS. And of course, an after party to follow. To secure your tickets, head to gcmusicawards.com.au. For those that can’t get along in person, be sure to tune into the livestream of the event. To RSVP to the livestream head over to the GCMA Facebook page.

But there’s a swag of incredible talent nipping at his heels this year, led by the righteously riotous hip hop force of nature Jesswar, who shot to prominence over the past 12 months off the back of her explosive track ‘Venom’, which took out the Hip Hop/Rap Award at the recent QMAs (the first female artist to take out the category since its inception four years ago.) Having recently released her debut EP, ‘TROPIXX’, she also recently took time out from the studio to hit the North Queensland tropics to headline the ‘Grrrls To The North’ travelling regional tour in late June, where she played shows in Rockhampton, Mackay, Townsville and Cairns as part of an all-female hip hop line-up showcasing a remarkable mix of talent curated from each region. Eclectic, psych-infused crew Peach Fur have rapidly followed up on their ‘Emerging Artist’ nomination at last year’s GCMA’s, off the back of their killer live show and vibrant tracks
such as ‘Glimmer’, the ‘Doreen Drive’ EP, which has garnered them over 100,000 monthly listeners on Spotify and their most recent EP, ‘Awake’, featuring the cosmic delights of recent single ‘Preloved’, which has been nominated in the Song Of The Year category. And speaking of emerging artists, last year’s winner in the Breakthrough Artist category, Eliza And The Delusionals, are also in the running for the major gong this year. 2020 brought the pop inflected indie-rockers huge success, with the release of both ‘Sentimental’ and breakthrough juggernaut ‘Just Exist’ bringing the band to international acclaim, breaking them into the North American market and accumulating nearly 5 million streams worldwide. Hollow Coves, the indie-folk inflected Gold Coast duo of Ryan Henderson and Matt Carins, followed up on their initial acclaim (touring the world prior to covid), to release their well-received debut album, ‘Moments’, in 2020. Their singles, ‘Coastline’, ‘Home’ and ‘The Woods’, collectively garnered over 100 million streams on Spotify. Another highly worthy candidate for Artist Of The Year is the man with the goosebumpinducing vocal timbre, the humble and extraordinarily talented Karl S Williams. A multi-faceted talent (singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, visual artist and poet, he is all of those) Karl distils the essence of blues, roots, folk and Americana into a unique wellspring of wonderment. 2020 saw him release his highly anticipated second album, ‘Lifeblood’, which was described in these pages as possessing “intense swagger and taut urgency” And rounding out the list of nominations for Artist Of The Year are power packed alternative prog-rock outfit Mass Sky Raid. Initially forming back in 2011 the band released their debut record, ‘Science Of Fiction’ in 2018 and since then have gone from strength to strength, playing Progfest in Brisbane in 2019, with their latest singles, ‘Breakthrough’ and ‘Arrows’, consolidating their reputation as a band on the cusp of greatness.

The Song Of The Year category at this year’s GCMA’s has offered up an outstandingly diverse array of tracks from twelve of this city’s finest musical talents. This year sponsored by CBD Live, here are the songs that will be battling it out to lay claim to the title. Song of the Year is sponsored by CBD Live
JESSWAR | VENOM
THESE FOUR WALLS | WHITE LIES
CASEY BARNES | COME TURN ME ON
Hip-hop femme-de-force Jesswar is a compelling presence on the music scene, with her tough as nails, righteous raps a conduit for emblazoning her proud Fijian heritage and emboldening women to stand proud and step forth. She dropped her longawaited debut EP, ‘TROPIXX’, in March, with the track ‘Venom’ an explosive, tough as teak, ‘come and get it’ call to arms that lays down her mantra and consolidates her ever burgeoning reputation.
Relocating to the Gold Coast from New Zealand a few years back, where they’d forged an enviable reputation, melodic hard rock juggernaut These Four Walls put out their third full length album in April 2020. One of five singles to have already come from the album (which has amassed over 1.5 million streams to date), ‘White Lies’ locks into a punchy groove augmented by an anthemic chorus built for shout it out loud stadium rock moments.
PEACH FUR | PRELOVED
AYA J | SHINE
Country rock heavyweight and carryover GCMA Artist Of The Year Casey Barnes is a consummate performer who needs little introduction to music fans, from #1 albums on the iTunes Country Album Chart, through to ARIA nominations and tours supporting Bryan Adams and Mariah Carey. With ‘Come Turn Me On’, (which he wrote with previous collaborators Nashville-based song-writing duo Brown and Gray), Casey delivers an outstanding amalgamation of modern country and commercial pop which has seen him gain an ever-growing legion of new fans.
Much loved local four-piece Peach Fur met in high school and have since been serving up their delectable, psychedelic infused surf-pop vibes, with their 2018 seven track release 'Doreen Drive’ reaching over 1.3 million streams. Taken from their splendid third EP, 'Awake', their song of the year nomination ‘Preloved’ sees the band lock into a rollicking, free spirited, cosmic jam of foot tapping, hear warming proportions.
Innovative electro pop act AYA J consist of Singer-songwriter and Gumbaynggirr man Angus Field and American drummer Sam Miller. Forming during the pandemic, the dynamic duo have made a rapid impact, consolidated off the back of the sweet and shimmering pop sounds of their debut EP ‘Tenth Street’. Their dazzling track from the start of the year. 'Shine', delivers stripped back beats and a soulful, chillaxed groove complemented with a silky-smooth vocal from Angus.
SAINT LANE | WHEN DID WE GROW UP? Of Fijian/Kiwi descent and now calling the Gold Coast home, indie hip-hop practitioner Saint Lane channelled personal tragedy and betrayal into an uplifting and moving hip hop/roots hybrid with his magical 2020 single, 'When Did We Grow Up'. On a bright and breezy acoustically-strummed bedrock, Saint Lane lays down his pain and redemption, rounded off by a classy vocal cameo from talented First Nations singer / songwriter Robbie Miller.
8
DVNA | ALL MY FRIENDS Since boldly announcing herself with the 2018 release of her debut single, ‘Girl On The Move’, sassy electro-pop-soul chanteuse DVNA (pronounced Da-na) has continued to make all posts a winner. She is on fact the carryover GCMA Song Of The Year title holder (for her track ‘Looking Like A Snack’) and in the past 12 months she’s once again come out with a killer new contender in the form of ‘All My Friends’, the track delivering a slinky, R&B inflected neo-soul vibe with a contemplative, emotionally charged undercurrent.
BECKAH AMANI | STANDARDS With her soulful folk-pop channelling the likes of Adele, Ed Sheeran and Angie McMahon, talented newcomer Beckah Amani made an instant impression on the musical universe with her jaw droppingly beautiful track, ‘Standards’. A stripped back delight that showcases her uniquely mesmerizing vocal presence, the track caught the attention of many, including international superstar, Tones and I, who went on to place it in her Instagram-based competition, That One Song.
DENNIS. X FDVM | RUN LITTLE HOUSE Yet another previous award winner (having taken out the inaugural Gold Coast Music Prize last year), electro indie-pop princess DENNIS has been going about consolidating her ever-growing reputation over the past 12 months, day-glo’ing up the airwaves and making you feel alright with the release of singles such as collaborative effort ‘What You Do’, with rapper Professor Paul. Her 2021 GCMA Song Of The Year nomination ‘Run Little House’ is a swooningly chilled and melodically bouncy collaboration with FDVM, which has hit over one million streams and counting.
Blank - issue #90 - September 2021
ELIZA AND THE DELUSIONALS | SENTIMENTAL Alternative pop-rock hit machine Eliza And The Delusionals were last year’s GCMA Breakout Artist Of The Year winners. Eliza Klatt and the boys recently stepped up and broke in the North American market off the back of brashly infectious tracks of the calibre of ‘Sentimental’, a measured, indie (power)pop hook-fest which swells and rouses in all the right places and further displays their mastery of crafting immaculate alt-rock radness.
GENIIE BOY | FOOL’S PLAY Indie pop sweethearts (literally) Geniie Boy is a match made in heaven, melding the talents of renowned multi-instrumentalist and producer Scott French and sassy indie-pop singer song writer Alisha Todd. This particular collaboration has an extra element of pizazz due to the fact that Alisha and Scott are also partners in life as well as music. The first fruits of their melding of art and heart took the form of a debut single entitled, ‘Fools Play’, which was produced by Scott at his Love Street Studios. The track showcases their talent for harmony-laden, danceable indie-pop framed within Alisha’s warm and distinctly Antipodean vocal stylings.
LASTLINGS | TAKE MY HAND And last (but certainly not least), electrodance duo Lastlings (comprised of siblings Amy and Josh Dowdle), channel a classy amalgamation of moody electronica and cinematic dance-pop that has recently seen them deliver their acclaimed 2020 debut album, ‘First Contact’. With ‘Take My Hand’, the pair have sculpted an atmospheric and movingly euphoric electro-dance anthem that will make you lose control. Words by Anthony Gebhardt

I recall seeing The Angels way back when I was at UNSW. They rocked Basser College like never before. Years later, when we moved from Sydney to the Gold Coast, Ruth and myself were fortunate enough to own and run the famous Trocadero Lounge at the beachside end of Hanlan Street in Surfers Paradise. I distinctly recall those crazy nights watching great local bands perform as well as high-energy alternative punk act Tism. Whatever happened to those masks? Even then, our focus was on promoting local bands wherever possible. As we all know, the memories of a fantastic live music act, bad dancing and late, late nights stay with us for years, if not decades. Today’s Gold Coast is vastly different to the 1990s with modern indoor and outdoor venues, a world-class convention centre, large sports and events stadiums and a suite of boutique sound stages and bars all capable of hosting great live music. Our Council is committed to maximising the live music industry through both our Music Action Plan and associated industry groups as well as changes to our City Plan. Through the music plan, Council has invested in developing creative skills for the local music sector as well as providing access to resources and funding. I’m pleased to see that almost 100,000 people have benefited from our plan since 2018. The recent City Plan amendments are designed to give greater opportunity to live music in the Southport Priority Development Area (PDA).

It will invigorate that CBD precinct, allowing businesses to take on more live music opportunities - with relevant local laws in place to ensure they are given the best opportunity to succeed. As Mayor, I know that council’s vision for the coast is one where artists and the music industry is valued and are provided with the opportunity to develop sustainable careers while continuing to live in the city. It is a vision where the coast community and visitors have easy access to world class music that brings economic, cultural and social benefits to everyone. We understand the value of the ‘night economy’ and want the coast to be recognised for making a national and global contribution to music. After all, the next Tism or Frenzal Rhomb are probably polishing up their act in a Gold Coast garage right now. Tom Tate Mayor

That pounding in your chest, those vibrations through your entire body, the sweat, the crowds, the energy up on stage… there’s nothing quite like live music experiences. Most of us have a handful that stand out for a variety of reasons, and this year’s crop of Live Act of the Year finalists are no different. And as professional musicians, for some of them it’s their own live experiences that get to live rent free in their heads year-round. Lucky! Words by Natalie O’Driscoll
KARL S WILLIAMS I remember seeing Leonard Cohen when he toured out here (in 2013 I believe). He hadn’t toured in years and I never dreamed that I could see him live. I was way in the back of the Brisbane Entertainment Centre and it struck me how that distance just shrank away to nothing - his generosity of spirit really reached out across the room. When he played ‘Chelsea Hotel #2’ it really struck me hard that I was in the room with the guy who had been there with Janis Joplin and written that song all those years ago. It was as if all that history suddenly became real for me in one paralysing instant.

At one of our gigs in the early days, there was a gorgeous young Swedish woman having a great time, who took all her clothes off on the dance floor and started naked dancing in the crowd. She got kicked out, so then she started climbing the lamp posts out the front. The venue manager started chasing her around the car park later in the night, but she was a fair bit nimbler than he, and the chase went on for a bit. It was all pretty hilarious!
It would probably be the last 3 shows I played on the TROPIXX tour!! We got lucky and were able to put on three warehouse shows before all the lockdowns. The energy was hectic! It felt like everyone had been holding on for so long and we had one night to rage!
PEACH FUR (DENNY) HUSSY HICKS We once played a show in the Piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere which is one of the most beautiful places in Rome. Hearing our songs bounce off the walls of that ancient square was unbelievable. Almost no one in the crowd knew who we were but minutes into our very short set everyone became totally engaged and we finished in a frenzy of appreciation reverberating around those same walls definitely one of the most incredible stage experiences either of us have ever had. Live Act of the Year is sponsored by Gold Coast Music.

One of the most memorable would have to be Groovin The Moo, 2015 in Newcastle. As a whole day but in particular, Flight Facilities’ set was next level. It was just after we formed the band and met Lemme, our bass player and decided on the name Peach Fur. Benny and I were walking through the crowd when we ran into a guy with a peach coloured furry wig on, that just solidified the name. FF then delivered one of the most life changing musical experiences ever. This is what inspired one of our first songs called ‘Vibrations’.

CASEY BARNES On a personal note it’s probably my first ever BIG break in music when I got to open for Bryan Adams for A Day On The Green. I'll never ever forget that.... that's what basically kickstarted everything for me.

GCMAs 2021: Taking The Ticket To Ride With Oztix Words by Anthony Gebhardt
Oztix are an online ticketing platform that have been connecting people with event ticketing for nearly twenty years, in the process becoming Australia’s largest independent ticketing provider.
and Rockinghorse Records in Brisbane. Promoters would drop off batches of hard tickets to each store personally and then you would need to call every day to see how many had sold. It was such a manual process.
They’ve also been a long-time proud sponsor of the GCMAs, putting their support behind the Venue Of The Year category since 2017.
Online ticketing at that time was only just starting to take off – so Oztix was born! And all of a sudden you could log in to see your ticket sales, as all record stores were networked up to the system and there was no more running around and physically taking tickets to stores when they ran out of allocation. The Zoo in Fortitude Valley was one of the first Oztix partners in 2003 and is still a key part of the family nearly 20 years later!
To get an insight into the machinations of Oztix and how they’ve been able to navigate the perils of the pandemic, we recently had a chat with the company’s Business Development Manager, Brad Hinds. Can you give us a rundown of the Oztix story and what it’s like to work for the company? The business has been operating since 2003 and is Australia's largest independent ticketing provider. The two founders have a long history of managing events such as the Gold Coast Big Day Out and the Livid Festival. The ticketing options in the early 00's were all about hard tickets at record stores like Sunflower Music at Pacific Fair

After some years of working at venues like the Troccadero in Surfers Paradise and the Coolangatta Hotel, I came on board as the company's first Business Development Manager in 2008. The team is very tight and are like a big family and the business model is all about doing good things with good people. Its very relationship-based and is all about getting the best outcome for clients.

CBD Live: Wired For Sound At Southport RSL Words by Anthony Gebhardt
CBD Live, located on Level 1 of the Southport RSL Club, is a state of the art, 1200 capacity live music venue which has traditionally hosted up to 60 events a year. Revamped and relaunched in 2018 under the CBD Live moniker, the venue is renowned for being one of Queensland’s best sounding auditoriums and while the impacts of the pandemic have made things tricky, the venue continues to play host to a range of original artists as well as some of Australia’s finest tribute acts, with a number of shows scheduled to take place again from late September. To find out more about the venue, how they’ve been managing during the pandemic and what’s in store in the future, we recently chatted with Marketing Manager Madeline Lambert. Can you give us a brief rundown on CBD Live as a venue - how long has it been operating, who are a few of the biggest acts that have played there so far and what makes it stand out as an outstanding live music venue? The venue is one of the Gold Coast’s largest auditoriums and has housed live music for over 20 years, providing state of the art light and sound production, a full stage, green rooms and the capacity to accommodate up to 1200 guests. A significant rebrand in 2018 was when CBD Live was officially born. Since then, it has grown from strength to strength and continues to establish itself in the Gold Coast music scene and to foster our local talent.

Getting Dressy For The GCMAs With Racy & Lucky Words by Anthony Gebhardt | Photography by Cam Attree
For the past few years Queensland fashion label Racy & Lucky have been ‘dressing the music’ for the GCMA Awards Ceremony, designing the dazzlingly unique outfits worn by the Gold Coast Music Awards team on the big night. Owner and designer Cindy Vogels is an original Gold Coast girl with creative fashion design in her blood and initially set up her world-renowned company following a successful design stint for Lady Gaga via Brandon Maxwell studios, with her designs causing a stir in the New York scene. Since then her unique design prowess has been in high demand both here and abroad, and this year Racy & Lucky will once again be creatively partnering up with The GCMAs to dress the team. We recently managed to have a chat with Cindy to discover, amongst other things, how she started out, a few of her favourite recent clients and her lifelong love of music. Can you give us a brief rundown on how you originally got into fashion design? I grew up playing in my mother’s clothing production space. She was designing and manufacturing everything from sportswear to bridal wear. I was fiercely curious and desperate to learn everything from her. My work is heavily driven by an early understanding of stretch garment, pattern drafting and construction. My mother had me skilled up quite confidently by 16 and I’m forever grateful. Once I had completed grade 12, it was onto the Gold Coast TAFE to Study a Fashion Diploma. Who are a few of your favourite clients/outfits that stands out across your design journey so far? And who would you particularly love to dress who you've yet to work with? I was reminiscing recently over the Beijing Baby wardrobe for Jaguar Jonze, because it was the first of so many for Deena and it just feels beautiful to acknowledge what we achieved together. I feel this collaboration was particularly amazing, as prior to working together we didn’t really know each other very well. I am quite fond of my work for Regurgitator’s 25 year Quarter Pounder tour, particularly remembering Quan in his Neon pink tutu with fairy lights! Blank - issue #90 - September 2021
Dressing Emily Wurramara for her first ARIA red carpet was a deeply emotional collaboration, her silk bush dyed fabrics were created on country by her family and community on Groote Eylandt. Thelma Plum, Dami Im and Vera Blue are three on my dream list to work with in the future here in Australia. Are you a big music fan and what type of shows do you enjoy getting along to? My parents are both musicians, my earliest memories are live music provided by their band in venues while I was eating dinner. Mum would then put my siblings and I to sleep with pillows under a big table in a restaurant. Working in fashion felt strangely uncomfortable until I was working inside the music industry, I have a comfortable affinity with music artists as fellow creatives. Recently, being at the Big Pineapple Festival made my year, I loved every single artist and band on their program. I hear that you're also working with up-andcoming Gold Coast musician DENNIS. on her outfit for a show in her home town. How has that experience been so far? I had pledged to work with Dennis. after her previous GC award two years ago, but then things got messy with the pandemic, but last year at the GC music awards when she performed live I was so in awe of her performance I reconnected after she stepped off the stage. We have finally got the perfect gig in our sights, with a complimentary project soon after to maximise our collaboration. What inspires your design aesthetic and how do you keep things 'real' in terms of maintaining your ideology of fashion as an art form as opposed to a massproduced commodity? Every single artist I work with inspires their unique aesthetic outcome. I get to be the creative conduit between them and the audience, driving visibility and translating their unique style and energy existence. I can’t even contemplate duplicating those looks. Wearable art is probably a better term to describe my practice really.

Gold Coast Villages: Mudgeeraba Words by Natalie O’Driscoll
We just love how all the little villages of the Gold Coast have their own distinct personalities. So we thought we’d check in with you folks and find out just where you love to stop and shop when you’re pottering around your local precinct. For this month’s edition we asked you about your fave places in the quaint and stunning surrounds of Mudgeeraba:
Mudgee Bah Espresso
The Wallaby Hotel
Mudjira Village Eatery
The Whisky Lounge
So what is it with Mudgeeraba and awesome cafes? Is there an abundance of highly discerning café patrons living in the village? We’ll just have to assume so, because Mudgee Bah Espresso also got a big shout out from locals. Great hollandaise and a lemon meringue pie that’s better than your nan’s apparently. Hey, don’t shoot the messenger. @mudgee_bah.
I mean, who doesn’t love the Wallaby? One of the best and most long standing live original music venues on the coast, The Wallaby Hotel has seen its share of fun nights out. It’s not just for partygoers though, especially with its recent reno, huge back deck, enclosed kid’s area and really, really, tasty new menu. They don’t have an Insta, so fb.com/thewallabyhotel is your go to.
Mudjira is the Indigenous name for Mudgeeraba, and means ‘a place of many stories’. The team takes great pride in their delicious seasonal food and house-made accompaniments, with a focus on local flavours, fresh ingredients and a range of dietary-requirement-friendly fare. @mudjiravillageaeatery.
When it comes to whisky, these folks know what they’re about. The Whisky Lounge offers a wide range of whisky experiences that will lead you into the wide world of whisky, including masterclasses, private tastings and whisky flights. Visit @ whiskyloungemudgeeraba and get on your way to becoming a connoisseur.

Millers Espresso
Anekawa
Le Vintage Boutique Café
The Barbers on Swan Lane
According to our locals in the know, Millers Espresso is a strong rival to The Oak Café for coffee and friendly service. But hey, given there is no shortage of folks wanting top shelf coffee served with a smile, we guess it just means that Mudgeeraba is one lucky village! @millersespresso. Try the bagels.
Anekawa is relatively new to the scene but is already making waves. An intimate Japanese dining experience that focuses on bio-diverse, Australian ingredients from ethical resources and traditional Japanese cooking methods, @anekawagc is a mustdo for all foodies.
Okay, okay, so it’s in Worongary. But those Mudgeerabarbarians (?) can’t keep everything for themselves! Not just a great place to stop in for all the usual toasties, sweets, coffee and breakfast, it’s a pet-friendly café as well, so you can bring your beloved pooch along for some treats. @Le_Vintage_Cafe.
Hugely popular with locals, the Barbers on Swan Lane are renowned for their cheerful, flexible, welcoming atmosphere, while still being very good at what they do. Lots of loyal long-term customers tell the story. A big fave. Fb.com/thebarbersonswanlane.
Gumnut Café Bakery
The Oak Café
The Hunted Café
Tasty pies, sandwiches and sausage rolls are the go here. Oh, and definitely get the cream doughnuts. Or any doughnuts. Or how about anything off the menu? That’d be great, thanks. Nice location in Mudgeeraba Market Shopping Centre and great coffee, too. They’re not online. Old school!
A real local’s local, The Oak Café does a range of unique dishes including Eggs (not) Benny, Chicken Gyros and Loaded CPS (Crunchy Potato Squares). Drool. The service and coffee are reportedly outstanding, too. Visit @the_oakgc.
The Hunted Cafe offers amazing locally sourced coffee, tasty food, takeaway beautiful gifts and even corner store products, making it a bit of a one stop shop. All amongst stunning valley surrounds, too. Check out @thehuntedcafe.

TOMI GRAY LEAVES US BREATHLESS Words by Natalie O’Driscoll
Unique and multi-faceted Gold Coast artist Tomi Gray has dropped some breathless alchemy recently in the form of a poetic, reflective EP and its lead single, both titled 'Asthma'. At the end of last month he also released an emotive video to accompany the single, and were lucky enough to get the first looky loo. As far as process goes, the quirky Palm Beach multi-instrumentalist locks himself away for weeks at a time in his home studio, a steam train of running thought and countless hours of solitude resulting in a collection of songs. With Tomi's whole EP - but especially leading track 'Asthma' and its video - reflecting his loss of a sense of identity during these chaotic times, we are curious about how the last eighteen months has affected his output. "The general feedback on this collection of songs is, it's a more concentrated offering of the usual chaos I toss at the vacuum," he says. "During that first lockdown, I threw two bedroom EPs online that are fairly... 'confused', is maybe the word... I think when you have the freedom to reach, you'll reach far and sometimes you come back with handfuls of shiny dirt. Like, ingredients that maybe don't fit together, but now you have these new flavors to play with in the future. “I think the 'Asthma' EP is me refining my recipe a little.” And keeping with the idea that from shiny dirt comes solid gold, single 'Asthma' explores the fear and uncertainty, yes, but also the hopefulness and self-awareness that arises when someone is suddenly unable to do the thing that they thought made them who they are. Tomi (pronounced TOE-mee) expands on that concept to us. "We have a somewhat embryonic value for the arts in this country. We take her for granted that she'll be there, if and when we decide she's essential," he says. "Meanwhile, venues are closing, gigs are being canceled, bands are giving up... It's easy to get distraught when everything you rely on to be predictable is yanked away. People
22
are running out of ideas and the pressure is building, causing a lot of spillover. "BUT... if we can just try and ride this out, watch it for what (whatever) it is, there's a lot that can be taken for having lived through periods of change and discomfort. We'll be alright." With all tracks on the EP laid down by the Tomi himself, (except for a huge "YEAAAH" by producer Matt Cook, a synth solo by Josh Paul and a chorus of drunken voices - see if you can spot them), 'Asthma' is the real deal; warm and thoughtful, it's a slickly recorded oneman-band experience with no shortage of layers, psych-folk vibes and a dash of drama to round it all out. It was also mastered by Gold Coast superstar Paul Blakey, and for free, no less. "He knew musos were feeling it on the wallet during lockdowns," Tomi explains. "I hope he's ok with me bringing that up, coz he's a pretty big wheel in the GC music game. He's worked with Amy Shark, who it's my understanding, is the actual shark from that baby shark song that went viral." Well at least Tomi hasn't lost his sense of humour along with his touring slots. (How cool would it be if the baby shark really was Amy tho...) The video was conceptualised and shot by Tomi and good pal Corey Mark Fisher in Tomi's garage, actually his first home on the Gold Coast and the home studio where the EP was born, giving it that extra touch of personal significance.
how he wants people to feel when they listen to or watch his tunes. His response runs deep.
The facepaint he wears in the clip is akin to putting on a character for Tomi: "Even a thin stripe is enough to trick me into thinking I have a full mask on then can excuse myself for going deeper in the performance."
Not that we're condoning that of course. But whatever gets the party started, peeps. We won't tell.
Given how much of himself he is offering up with this musical project, we ask Tomi
"Ideally, stoned. If you can get your hands on some mushies, that's even better."
The official EP launch date is set for 5 September at Cambus Wallace in Nobbys, so be sure to hit that up for some good vibes.
Blank - issue #90 - September 2021
Tomi’s final message on the matter: "I'm in no way qualified to give advice, but here's some anyway. Things are weird at the moment, they may get worse. We'll all get through this, just try as hard as you can, not to be a c**t. That's it. And obviously, listen to the EP. But if you only have time for one, do the first." Wise words. Will Day | Countrified
THE SWITCH 4 SEPTEMBER
Words by Anthony Gebhardt
‘Countrified’, the debut album from rapidly rising country rock singer-songwriter Will Day, signals the arrival of one of the genre’s most promising new talents. Consolidating his break-out year of 2019 (where he played nine straight shows at the iconic Tamworth Country Music Festival), Day has called upon some heavy duty help to deliver his vision, pulling together a bunch of impressive co-writes from fellow country artists of the calibre of Jetty Road, Hayley Jensen and Jade Holland.

THE CROWDPLEASERS 25 SEPTEMBER
The album strikes a pleasing balance between foot-to-thefloor country rockers juxtaposed with more introspective, singer-songwriter fare. On the amped up side of the equation, the album’s title track bursts out of the barnyard with a sassy strut, its electrified rock dawg approach delivering Day with a solid hit on country rock radio playlists. This ‘tear it up’ vibe is carried over in numbers such as ‘Underdog’ and the rocking ‘Bro’s’, which features guest vocals from fellow country bros Col Finley and Troy Kemp. And ‘Won’t Break Me’ is another impressive country rocker that displays serious crossover potential. On the flipside Day is more than apt at taking things down a notch, as reflected in more introspective numbers such as the moving ‘Rare Piece of Earth’, in which Day tips his hat to his hometown of Goondiwindi and ‘Dear Dad’, which delivers a moving lament to his late father. And ‘Simple Then’ is one of the album’s high watermarks, a track of doomed love and sweetheart heartbreak, with Day sharing vocal duties with honey-larynxed country chanteuse Brooke Schubert. For those with a penchant for getting Countrified, Will Day has delivered a debut that is sure to consolidate his reputation as one of the finest new country rock talents.

FINALISTS What’s your favourite album of all time? There are two reactions to this question: either an album springs immediately to mind, or you think “IMPOSSIBLE!” We posed the tricky question to some of this year’s Gold Coast Music Awards Release of the Year finalists, and got quite an array of responses. Adding to our Spotify queue in three… two… one… KARL S WILLIAMS
It’s so hard to choose a favourite but I’m going to say Leonard Cohen’s first album ‘The Songs of Leonard Cohen’. It is one of the albums that has been with me throughout my life. I remember it being played in the house as a kid and being mystified by it then; yet I can listen to it now and find inspiration every time. It is like an old friend that encompasses a whole world I can step into at any time and like all great art, it continues to change as I change.
DOOLIE
It’s an oldie but one of my all-time faves has to be the ‘Down to Earth’ album by Flight Facilities. The album just caters to any kind of mood you’re in, there’s so many amazing collaborators on it too. It’s so diverse yet so cohesive, and it truly has no aged one bit, I will find myself still listening to a lot of the songs now.

PEACH FUR (BENNY, LEAD GUITARIST)
It’s certainly hard to choose one album to call my favourite as it’s a close call between my most loved bands like Pink Floyd, POND and Chili Peppers.. Although I’d have to say the unique work of art POND conceived on their album ‘Man It Feels Like Space Again’ takes the cake at the moment. I love the diversity of sounds and emotions they display on this record. This was a huge influence on Peach Fur’s music over the years.
JESSWAR
My favourite album is Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Good Kid Maad City’. The first time I heard this album I was blown away. Every time I come back to this album I’m still in awe. It’s like sound art, you become submerged into Kendrick’s universe. This album inspires me to this day not only as an artist but as a fan of rap music. Hands down one of the greatest albums of all time.

We’ve decided that we can’t commit to just one, so instead here is a shortlist of our all time (but in current rotation) great albums: Supertramp - Crime of the Century Mavis Staples - We’ll Never Turn Back Neil Young - Tonight’s the Night Brittany Howard - Jaime Prince - Love symbol System of a Down – Toxicity
CASEY BARNES
Tough to narrow it down to just one album but I've always had a soft spot for ‘Brothers In Arms’ by Dire Straits as it was the very first album I ever received as a kid and ended up being my first live concert too. So I'll never forget that. Release of the Year is sponsored by, well, us actually!

MEET AMY ROBERTS Whether she’s volunteering as a music teacher in Nepal, singing and playing guitar at a local gig, or listening back to one of her 629 recorded voice memos for material, Amy Roberts lives and breathes music. We caught up with Amy to get an insight into her incredible musical brain. What’s your favourite thing about being a musician? The coolest thing to me is when I hear someone humming my song or singing my lyrics. I find it wild that anyone would care, because there’s so many talented people that you can listen to! So, its super fulfilling and humbling. You’ve been gigging full-time for 2-3 years now. What made you want to start studying Contemporary Music at Southern Cross University on top of that? I actually found that I had heaps of free time because most of my gigs were towards the end of the week. So, I figured that it was the perfect thing to compliment what I was already doing. Anyone can be self-taught at anything, but I just wanted to improve and it’s nice having a structure to help you do that. How have you found it so far? Its so fun, I love the practical classes! We have a class called ‘creative music practice’ where you get put into bands and you get to just make music with other people. Also, the teachers are so friendly and I’ve received plenty of opportunities from them.

That’s awesome! Do you have a stand-out opportunity you’ve received? Well through my musical theory teacher, Sam, I’m actually playing my first festival at the next Bluesfest! He was already playing and they needed another singer so he recommended me! The teachers really help in getting gigs, which is so nice. Where do you get inspiration to make music from? I do a lot of journaling and I have a very active dog, so I walk a lot and record a lot of voice memos. Ahh yes the voice memos, every musician's staple in 2021! How many do you have recorded in your phone right now? *checks voice memos* 629! It’s funny because you don’t even remember them. Every now and then I’ll just do a Russian roulette and click on a recording on my phone to listen to and it will be very hit and miss. If I’m washing the dishes sometimes I’ll just put my phone on record and freestyle. You can keep up to date with Amy on Instagram @amyjohnroberts
When The Walls Talk: Artist Loretta Lizzio Loretta Lizzio’s art stops you in your tracks. Her enchanting murals grace the inside and outside of buildings around the globe, from London to Vancouver, Darwin, Melbourne and, thankfully, the Gold Coast. An incredibly talented painter, illustrator, photographer and all around creative powerhouse, Lizzio’s public works and studio practice are equally mesmerizing. You can’t help but blissfully loose yourself soaking up the beauty, intimacy and passion of her detailed and ethereal creations. Loretta has shown in solo and group exhibitions across Australia and internationally in locations such as New York, Scotland, Los Angeles and Auckland and is regularly featured in leading mural festivals such as Wall to Wall Festival in Benalla (Victoria), Brisbane Street Art Festival, Darwin Street Festival (Northern Territory) and Vancouver Mural Festival (Canada). She has also collaborated with brands such as Element, New Balance, watchmakers The 5TH, Toyota, the Virgin Australia magazine, Voyeur, and Wacom. The Gold Coast is now blessed with several of Lizzio’s masterpieces, including a show-
stopping mural for the recent Miami Surface Street Art Festival (July, 2021) that wraps around the exterior of the Fenech Guitars Avalon Street building in Miami… This one’s so fresh you can still smell the paint. We caught up with Loretta to chat about her mural practice and her oh-so-fresh work on Avalon Street. Can you share a bit about your journey to becoming an artist? I have always been consumed with creating things. Art has been the most major aspect in my life for as long as I can remember. What first stimulated you to start painting in public space? I worked in a small café and the owner, Julie, suggested I paint a wall in the café. She let me paint the wall beside the coffee machine between making coffees. It wasn’t until I moved to Melbourne years later that it became a major part of my art practice. What do you enjoy most about creating art in public space? I love that at the end of the day you are completely wrecked. You use your whole
body to create a large scale artwork. I enjoy the challenge of working with the elements, the building owner, the building features and its surroundings. How has your style evolved over time? I feel that I have evolved A LOT over the past 10 years. I have gone from pencil work to inks and working solely in black and white to working with acrylics and oils in full blown colour. As long as I am constantly evolving and growing I am happy. What is your dream public space to create in? I would love to paint a nice flat surface of a high rise building with a fairly open time frame so its not rushed. I think I could come up with a pretty special design. Can you tell us about some of the things that inspire your murals? Music is a pretty important part of every artwork I create. One great song can inspire many many designs. I am also drawn to imagery of strong female figures in a vulnerable moment. I personally find there is something really disarming and beautiful about this.
What a talent. Here’s to more Lizzio magic on the Gold Coast! To find out more, visit Loretta’s webpage lorettalizzio.com or @loretta_lizzio. Words and Photographs by Amelia Green

CBD Sundown: It’s time to get down in Southport Southport will bloom with arts and music during Spring when the City of Gold Coast hosts CBD Sundown.
STUDENTS’ MOTION VISUALS HIT MAIN STAGE Student-generated motion visuals will put crowds into a digital daze when they hit the main stage at Australia’s biggest dance music festival – Lunar Electric. For the past few months 23 TAFE Queensland screen and media students from the Coomera campus have spent countless hours executing 10-15 minutes of mesmerizing visuals for line-up standout, Brooklyn. Diploma of screen and media student, Jack Taylor said he never expected to be working on such a high-profile real world project. “I knew TAFE Queensland offered real world experiences as part of the course, but I never expected to be creating motion visuals that would be displayed on the main stage of a major festival,” said Jack. Though they are not yet finished, the 17-year-old said the final visuals will be a progressive feast for the eyes while aligning with Brooklyn’s brand. “The crowd will be taken on a journey flooded with colourful psychedelic trances, futuristic worlds and cartoon realms that people won’t want to take their eyes off,” said Jack. "We have crafted synthwave, retro and science fiction worlds catered to Brooklyn’s style, but the final visuals will be a blending of these realms, creating something unique and original to transport Brooklyn and her fans to another world they won’t want to leave," he said. Meanwhile, some students also spent time in the studio with Brooklyn to capture mini motion clips on a green screen to be rendered into the visuals. These short clips include striking costume changes, various use of props including a Harley-Davidson and choreographed movements.
28
Together, Jack said the class will have collectively spent hundreds of hours refining and developing the visuals. “It will feel amazing to know that the hours myself and the rest of the team have put into this project will be shown to such a wide audience. It will give us significant exposure and the experience has enabled us to refine our craft for a real world client,” he said. Brooklyn, who is one of the biggest female DJs in the country provided students with a brief and mood board before meeting the class on-campus to see some of their initial concepts. “I was really impressed with the student’s ideas and loved the direction they were heading. Together we talked through my brand, the colours and what elements I’d like to see, I am super excited to see the final product,” said Brooklyn.
“These visuals will enhance my performance and complement a few other top-secret things I have planned for the set.” After Lunar Electric Festival, Brooklyn plans to take the visuals with her on tour to nightclub LED screens around the country. The student’s enticing display can be seen during Brooklyn’s set at Lunar Electrical Music Festival at The Spit in Main Beach later this year. For more information about TAFE Queensland’s Screen and Media courses please call 1300 308 233 or visit tafeqld.edu.au.

On Friday 24 September, you can immerse yourself in the arts in Southport. As the sun sets, a FREE evening of surprise and delight awaits, delivered by some of the Gold Coast’s most talented creatives. Southport CBD’s live music venues and forgotten spaces will come alive with popups, live art, music, street performance and of course, delicious food and drinks. Get lost down Regent Lane with This is Art and their ‘Memory Lane’ series featuring live painting, DJ mixing nostalgic disco tunes and vintage arcade games. Pinot and Picasso will host a free paint and sip workshop under the stars whilst Mr P.P.’s Southport’s iconic rooftop bar, will be on location mixing up your favourite beverages at their pop-up Airstream bar. The talented Anthony Pieters will be showcasing his unique ability to combine art, music and dance into a captivating visual experience which has previously been described as unexpected, meaningful, and unforgettable. Chris Nimri, performer extraordinaire in his own right, will host the evening alongside Natasha St James, the Coast’s favourite Drag Queen. “I’m so looking forward to it,” Chris tells us when we catch up for a chat. Something of a Renaissance man, Chris is a regular performer at Pink Flamingo, where he does a bit of everything. Hosting, singing, dancing, you name it. He has even put together his own roller-dancing show, which CBD Sundown audiences will be treated to in September.
Blank - issue #90 - September 2021
Surprisingly, he only pulled on a pair of roller skates for the first time during Covid last year, but with all that lockdown time up his sleeve, he got good, fast. “I would skate as soon as I got up, and then when the sun went down, I’d still be skating!” Chris tells us. Of course, such dedication rarely comes without injury, with Chris spraining both sides of his left ankle in an epic stack that, unfortunately, probably looked pretty funny. “Within the first month I fell into the bowl at Pizzey Park,” Chris laughs. CBD Sundown audiences needn’t fear however, as Chris’ in-demand rollerdancing and performance skills have seen him master the art quick smart. “I’ll be rolling around and having fun with the crowd, and doing a little bit of a show with Natasha, too.” We can’t wait. Roving roller girls, busking and plenty of other surprises are in store for curious event goers. And once the event has finished, you can always kick on at one of Southport’s many fine bars, including Mr PP’s Deli & Rooftop Bar, Vinnie’s Dive Bar, Last Night on Earth, Hello K-Pop Karaoke, Cecil Hotel, Swannie’s, CBD Live or Pacific Hotel. In fact why not do a crawl to all of them, and get home via the G:Link at Nerang Street Station? CBD Sundown is presented by City of Gold Coast, and runs from 6pm to 9pm on Friday 24 September, with ongoing Friday night activations until mid next year.
4 metres. It means that I’m upscaling my welding skills, because I’m welding it all myself, and I love a challenge. The first two were timber, definitely learnt a lot building the first one, and it’s made it a lot easier to recreate the same design, but in a different material. Each one has its own set of challenges. Why are you so in love with spirals? They just have a lot of meaning for me, they represent the flow of energy and life itself, forward and backwards through time. Yet they’re timeless. Nature always inspires me, I’m always looking at spirals in nature, and our DNA, and I’ve been previously in my textile works I’ve been doing lots of macrame knotting which is also spirals.
William Barton takes up residence at HOTA Photography by Keith Saunders
An incomparable talent bringing a timeless, ancient artform to the biggest stages of classical music, William Barton has forged his status as one of Australia’s leading composers and didgeridoo players over decades of commitment, innovation, and performance. Joining HOTA for a week-long residency, his presence, connection to community, and love for music has become an infectious force felt long before he’s set to arrive. A proud Kalkdunga man, raised on a cattle station outside Mount Isa in Northwest Queensland, Barton’s family and connection to country carry a heavy importance in his work. His uncle, Arthur Peterson, was Barton’s first mentor and teacher. Regarding his uncle’s teachings, Barton recalls:
is a language. It’s a speaking language and like any language, it’s something that you’ve got to learn over many months, and many years. It’s got to be a part of you, and what you do.” Performing alongside his mother, singer, songwriter, and poet, Delmae Barton, their incredible creative bond is captivating and needs to be experienced for the depth of the connection to be felt and understood. A constant collaborator, Barton celebrates his community, working alongside talented forces and creative muses. A celebration of William’s continually growing legacy, his connection to community, and unrivalled talent, his residency is a feather in the cap for HOTA and an unbelievable opportunity to experience a generational talent.

Meet Melissa Carey. She’s pretty swell. Words by Natalie O’Driscoll
Ethereal and enigmatic in concept, but in reality grounded in tough materials and great deal of sweat, Melissa Carey’s arts practice is not a simple one to pigeonhole. She is bringing her unique perspective to September’s SWELL Sculpture Festival, alongside a plethora of talented established artists and exciting new talent on the Currumbin foreshore this September. Her SWELL piece ‘The Spiral of Life’ is heavily reflective of her recent practice, incorporating as it does the spirals that occur in nature and giving them otherworldly placements. Melissa herself describes spirals as “transmission of energy, radiating out and drawing in, infinitely and eternally.” We had a chat to this fascinating artist ahead of her very first showing at the beloved Gold Coast arts festival.
How do you want audiences to feel when they look at your piece? The artwork is essentially a bit of a portal into another world and so when you look through the spiral you’ll be able to see where the ocean meets the sky, so it’s a combination of different elements and I just hope that people will be inspires and moved by the artwork. You teach art. What is something you ALWAYS say to students, no matter what? Everyone is creative. Everyone has their own unique form of expressing creativity. Can you name any of your favourite local artists? Irene Messia. Her works are stunning, I feel super inspired by her. Just beautiful. How are you feeling now that SWELL is just around the corner? It’s my first time, and I’m super excited to be part it. Art is such an important part of our culture, to me. Art helps us to see the beauty in the world, and to and art invokes different feelings and emotions for us which can often inspire us.
Has the move from Sydney to the Gold Coast changed your work at all?
Follow @artistmelissacarey for more.
I wouldn’t say it’s changed my work, it’s definitely improved my mental health. In Sydney the rat race got a bit much for me. I prefer living more in nature and it helps create more peace in my life. And I definitely make more art.
The main SWELL Sculpture Festival runs on Currumbin Beach from 10 to 19 September, with workshops, artist talks, guided sculpture walks, SWELL Kids Elements and much more on offer.
I understand this is the fourth piece in your spiral series. What are some of the unique challenges you face putting together a piece of that size and shape, and what have you learned through creating the series?
Community events include westerlySWELL and northerlySWELL which run from 1 to 19 September, and easterlySWELL which runs from 10 September.

When it comes to the criteria of what makes a great café, Tap & Grind Café ticks all the boxes. What’s more, it’s a gem in the heart of Australia Fair. Great Belaroma coffee from Seven Miles Coffee Roasters is the café’s heartbeat, its malty milk chocolate palate balanced with just the right level of acidity. Weekday trade begins at 7.30am with local workers grabbing coffee and ‘food to go’ from the display cabinet. Muffins, brownies and small cakes are made daily by Laura. Excellent Portuguese tarts, pastries and doughnuts are brought in daily from The Pastry Emporium at Sorrento. We’re served by a young vibrant staff, and simply blown away by the food, with some of the most beautiful plating we’ve seen on the Gold Coast. It’s spot on! Tap & Grind is owned by Vanessa Rubini, who started the café seven years ago as a 20-year-old with her dad as business partner. When Vanessa’s dad moved back interstate, Vanessa bought him out and is now sole owner. This year, Brazilian chef Laura Lima Cruz has come on board. With Vanessa, Laura has created an all-day menu of 10 dishes to suit the diverse demographic who frequent the centre. Many are regulars, the clientele who kept buying their daily coffee throughout lockdown to keep the café afloat, and others who shop at the centre less frequently.
30
While shopping centres are not always a place where you’d expect to see ‘destination dining’, with Laura’s artistic flair and attention to detail, Tap & Grind’s food stands out. Laura’s food, from açai bowls to eggs bene, and chilli eggs to beef and bacon burger is drawing a younger clientele of Southport workers. People even travel here to dine on the weekend because of the calibre of each dish. “My grandfather once told me to do everything with love to feel fulfilled and that's how I feel every day working here,” Laura says. Laura’s favourite dish is the ‘Avo Good Day’, her version of the perennial favourite Smashed avocado on toast, where she’s played with both the flavours and colours adding Danish feta, dukkah, cherry tomatoes and beetroot purée to bring us a dish that’s all her own. The menu is supplemented by a specials board. There are also daily special deals, such Muffin Monday, Toastie Tuesday, Thursday açai bowl and smoothie etc. which have their own appeal. With their drive for excellence and a commitment to buying local produce, Vanessa, Laura and the team bring us a classy café. It’s a place where you can dine at both ends of the spectrum, from a humble toastie to a work of art on a plate, a cup of organic tea or coffee to a super green smoothie. That’s the range of choice Tap & Grind provides.
When it comes to enjoying the good life, all things are not equal. Many people have dietary constraints that limit choices, meaning that joining in festivities and celebrations is often difficult. The founders of Australia’s first organic grainfree bakery, Seeds of Life, addressed that need last year with the launch of the Rainbow Bar servery in their shop at The Kitchens, Robina. Already renowned for their organic, grain and gluten free breads, bakes, slices and desserts, the new menu of ‘meals to go’ is open from 11am daily, providing absolutely delicious and nutritious lunches for healthconscious shoppers and workers. One of their latest initiatives is a Seeds of Life High Tea once a month, three tiers of delicious organic, preservative-free, vegan and gluten-free treats. It’s a game changer for those who need a little organic indulgence! It’s also a way to taste a range of dishes available at the Rainbow Bar. Seeds of Life was founded by Heidi and Peter Wiltshire, Heidi telling us that due to her own health and autoimmune issues, she and Pete had begun living a paleo lifestyle in 2013, baking their own plantbased bread which was allergy free. Acutely aware of the gap in the market for nutrient-dense non-allergenic foods through her own experience, in June 2015 Heidi, a former clothing marketing manager, began selling her keto loaves at the Marina Mirage Markets. Heidi’s bread was an immediate hit. The couple opened their

own pop-up market stall in The Kitchens at Robina Town Centre, progressing to a shop front in 2017, together with an online store. “We’re so passionate about serving the people of the Gold Coast high quality, certified organic goods free of grains, gluten, yeast, refined sugar, dairy, eggs, soy and preservatives. We focus on simple plantbased foods and ingredients that fuel their bodies with optimum nutrition without sacrificing on flavour,” Heidi tells us. As a certified-organic bakery, Seeds of Life is a ‘go to’ place for coeliacs, gluten-free and vegan diners. Their exclusive bakery range of 34 signature products includes savoury breads, such as the popular Thor loaf, sweet breads such as Banana bread, cakes, puddings such as their famous Sticky Date Pudding, wraps, pizzas, cookies, muffins, biscuits and other sweet treats, bake-at-home mixes, and even a Vegemite substitute called EveryMite. Their menu focuses on colourful wholesome meals that are as delicious as they are nutritious, including mouth-watering raw desserts. Now Seeds of Life is launching a ‘Pay it Forward’ campaign entitled Bread of Love, a way to gift those in need to improve their general health and wellbeing. Details can be found on the Seeds of Life website. NOTE: Takeaway is available from Seeds of Life, or order for delivery from their online shop. Seeds of Life High Tea is held monthly. Wallapalooza returns in 2021, and it’s massive
Sponsored by Burleigh Brewing
Biermann sees Red Words by Glenn Tozer
The Wallaby Hotel, Rebel FM and Pineapple Mafia recently announced that Wallapalooza will return on Saturday 20 November, and this year the epic live music event will be bigger than ever before. Wallapalooza is the Gold Coast’s longest running independent festival and, having been held at The Wallaby Hotel for the past 12 years, the pub venue is moving the event to the Mudgeeraba Showgrounds in 2021, meaning around 5000 music lovers will now be able to attend. The Wallaby Hotel, operated by Australian Venue Co, is synonymous with live music, holding a reputation as one of the best live music venues on the Gold Coast. Therefore, it only makes sense that its Wallapalooza event has been a breeding ground for some of the Gold Coast’s best rock, heavy and alternative bands and artists. This year, The Wallaby is working with Rebel FM and the Pineapple Mafia crew to bring the region a huge line up of stellar national and local acts to the new Mudgeeraba Showgrounds location. Up to 20 heavyweight acts will take to the stage including Aussie rockers Grinspoon as headliners who said: “Excited to join the Wallapalooza. This has been an interesting year to say the least and we can't wait to see people out in the sunshine rockin!”
Joining them are The Butterfly Effect, 28 Days, Def FX and Dead Letter Circus, igniting the Gold Coast and getting live music pumping through the veins of guests. Bodyjar, one of the first bands to return to the stage in 2021 after the Melbourne lockdown, will also entertain with tracks from their first album in almost a decade, which is due to be release later this year. The Wallaby Hotel Venue Manager and strident live music supporter, Mark Westerway added: “Wallapalooza has been a stable part of The Wallaby’s entertainment calendar for 12 years. This year we are taking it to the next level and putting it on at the Mudgeeraba Showgrounds with the expectation of 4000 guests. Live music and The Wallaby go hand-in-hand and we are thrilled to be working alongside Rebel FM and Pineapple Mafia to put on one of the best live music events the Gold Coast has ever seen.” To ensure eager fans are fed, food trucks for every appetite will be present. Wallapalooza will rock the Gold Coast on Saturday 20 November at Mudgeeraba Showgrounds. Tickets won’t last long, and both initial releases have sold out already. Visit wallapalooza.com.au.
Early in August, a young Gold Coast artist found himself amongst five national finalists from 1400 entries in this year’s Triple J Unearthed High prize. 17-year-old Jacob Biermann, already fielding praise for his new single ‘Red’ from trusted commentators like Richard Kingsmill and Tommy Faith, notes some of his influences as G-Flip, Ruel and The Chainsmokers. Formerly from Reedy Creek’s Kings College and now at JMC Academy, Biermann commented on the Unearthed High experience, “Being part of the competition has been amazing; getting to know the other artists was super fun and hearing my song on the radio was a massive highlight.” Red mixes up a heartfelt but catchy pop tune with Biermann’s impressive vocal range, and wrestles with the emotions of someone desperately seeking help but struggling with how to communicate it. “I see red when people don’t understand me,” notes Biermann, “but I know art is 100% subjective and can mean anything to anyone, which is one thing I love about it”. While NSW beating out Queensland isn’t ever really on our radars (#sorrynotsorry), Barrenjoey High in Avalon bred the ultimate Unearthed High 2021 victors, The Rions. Nevertheless, Jacob Biermann’s talent is being recognised nationally and he’ll have an EP out in the not-too-distant future. In the meantime, ‘Red’ is a must-download offering for indie-pop loving locals from this emerging Gold Coast artist. Visit @jacob.biermann for more.

ABOUT PEOPLE’S CHOICE: Words by Natalie O’Driscoll
All finalists are eligible to enter the People’s Choice Award at the Gold Coast Music Awards, and most finalists have opted in this year. The winner is decided through a two stage process that involves online voting during which three finalists are decided upon. These three finalists are then voted on in person by GCMA ceremony ticket holders (where, by a strange coincidence, Burleigh Brewing’s Twisted Palm Ale will be the official beer of the event – neat, huh?) The winner of the People’s Choice Award is the only award at the ceremony that is decided at the actual event. The winner will be presented with a trophy designed and created by Gold Coast artist Clayton Blake, who was especially commissioned by SWELL Sculpture Festival to create this one-of-a-kind award. If you aren’t able to attend the ceremony in person or watch the livestream, Blank’s socials and website will have all the winner’s deets as soon as they’re available.

For the first time last year the Gold Coast Music Awards offered a career defining prize to an artist expected to make great strides over the coming twelve months. Known as the Gold Coast Music Prize, the inaugural award was taken out by up-and-coming electro indie-pop starlet DENNIS. Supported this year by Friends Of The Arts, the winner will receive an epic industry prize especially curated to support the winner’s career trajectory (as well as a few fun treats for the artist thrown in). This year the nominations have expanded, with eight Gold Coast artists in the running to take out the honour. Here’s who’s in the running:
PURE MILK
Angular, melodically charged indie rock quintet Pure Milk consolidated their ever growing standing with the release of their buzz-worthy debut EP Garden Variety in
August 2020, working together with Brad Hosking to further define their sound. Their singles ‘Conversations’ and ‘Pressure’ were added to Double J Rotation, along with spins on Triple J Good Nights and 2020 with Richard Kingsmill. Here’s what Pure Milk’s front man and songwriter Lewis Nitschinsk had to say on what it would mean to win the award.
CHLOE STYLER
A voice for our times, young, focussed and on-the-rise country music lass Chloe Styler has been rapidly developing as a writer, singer and performance artist, touring nationally in early 2020 with UK pop icon Tony Hadley (Spandau Ballet). Her twangworthy country sound channels artists of the ilk of Maggie Rogers, Jade Bird, Gretta ray and Vera Blue.
EUCA
Soft-rock singer/songwriter EUCA is a pocket dynamo whose oeuvre

hits the sweet-spot between heavenly melodies, brawny riffs and a ‘keep it real’ emotional integrity. Renowned for her lyrical story-telling prowess, her poprock stylings channel the likes of Middle Kids, Phantastic Ferniture, Catfish And The Bottlemen and Missy Higgins. Having racked up almost half a million Spotify streams for her debut single ‘Not Champagne’, her follow up singles ‘I Hate The Way’ and ‘Spite’ have kept her firmly in the spotlight over the past 12 months.
GIRL AND GIRL
These garage inflected indie rockers straddle generations, consisting of three mates augmented with Aunty Liss on drums. They’ve rapidly gained traction across the Gold Coast and Brisbane music scenes, supporting the likes of The Moving Stills, Death by Denim and Peach fur as well as being named the music. com’s ‘top 25 rising local acts - 2021’. With three cracking tracks already under their belts, anticipation if high for their upcoming debut EP, ‘A Typical Friday Night (Shame, Sex and Misery)’
LIV HEYER
Sassy young singer/songwriter Liv Heyer is part of the up and coming ‘new breed’ progressing through the Gold Coast musical ranks. Her multi-instrumental capabilities (she’s proficient on guitar, ukulele and piano) combined with a willingness to regularly ply her trade in a live setting, performing everywhere from festivals through to pubs, cafes and even weddings, have seen her gain a steady foothold on the scene, receiving global recognition for her song-writing as well as performing with artists of the calibre of Birds of Tokyo, Montaigne, and Cody Simpson.
SELVE
Psychedelic infused alt/art rock project Selve is the brainchild of enigmatic lead singer, Jabirr Jabirr man, Loki Liddle. Renowned for their flamboyant live shows, their most recent single, ‘The Pink Motel’, came about during a 10-day artist residency at Coolangatta’s iconic Pink
Hotel during lockdown, which also produced a documentary chronicling their trippy creative adventures.
TALIA ROSE
LGBTQIA+ artist Talia Rose moved from New Zealand at the age of eleven before traversing a challenging pathway through her teenage years prior to arriving on the Gold Coast in early 2020 to pursue her musical dreams. Her strong, soulful voice wrapped around atmospheric alt-indie soundscapes are on full display in her most recent singles ‘Trash’ and ‘Pretty Little Liars’, which have both picked up plenty of radio play and Spotify streams.
HARRY J HART
Prodigiously talented young multiinstrumentalist Harry J Hart has been on an ever upwards musical trajectory since the age of 13. Renowned for his heart melting vocals, impressive song writing and dazzling guitar skills, Harry fronts his own band as well as playing as a session musician with some of Queensland’s finest acts. The past 12 months have seen him gain a slot on the Jungle Love Festival bill, perform as part of Canada's virtual Music Week and put out a handful of killer tracks in preparation for the release of his upcoming debut EP. We’ll leave it with Harry on the final word on what it would mean to him to take out the prize: “I have always sought out the most powerful learning opportunities for my music, such as attending Berklee College of Music guitar courses, studying song-writing with world renown Pat Pattison, attending a music business conference in Nashville and travelling to LA to study guitar with Tom Morello, Nuno Bettencourt, Bibi McGill and other guitar legends. I believe the Gold Coast Music Prize would help me in my continued professional development and learning, which I believe is an important ongoing part of a longterm career in this industry.” Words by Anthony Gebhardt

Eliza & The Delusionals Are On A Roll
René Le Feuvre Strips Things Back
Eden’s Spoken Word Purge
René Le Feuvre is showcasing his diversity as a songwriter with the stripped back version of his recent single ‘Euphoria’. Changing key and replacing slick electronic production for acoustic guitar, this new version gives René’s stunning vocal chance to cut through shining a light on the heartfelt, lovestruck lyrical content. Accompanied by an intimate video shot in the beautiful Gold Coast hinterland this version could almost be better than the original.
Keeping things nice and varied for our mixed bag of new music this month is local spoken word artist Eden. Her debut EP ’Moment/s’ is an up front, honest purge of love and emotion that invites the listener into the world of this bright young Gold Coast artist. Accompanied by some well put together modern RnB inspired production, the EP features a host of guest vocalists including Lord6ixx, Lucie, Ballet and Jesse Jaxe to create a solid start to finish listen. Refreshing stuff from here from Eden.
Lotus Ship Emerge From Hibernation
Will Day’s Impressive Debut
Hinterland’s Feminine Power Anthem
Eliza & The Delusionals are on a roll with yet another world class glistening pop-rock single ‘Save Me’. Again delving deep into their trademark sound of 90s / early ‘00s nostalgia, the local four-piece seem to play with the heartstrings inspiring emotions of memories lost through hooky layered guitars and the unmistakable vocal of Eliza Klatt. An incredibly well put together song here from one of the Gold Coast’s biggest musical exports.
Lotus Ship have come out of a creative COVID hibernation with a whopping 12 track journey of a debut album titled ‘Digital Future’. A stylistic melting-pot that draws wide ranging influences from INXS to Faith No More the record is experimental psychedelic rock at its core with fuzzy guitar solos, thrashing drums and song structures that will keep you guessing every step of the way. Highlight tracks include the groove heavy title track, the 8:25 mood swinging epic ‘Control’ and the skuzzy rock anthem ‘Squishy’. Top stuff here from Lotus Ship.

Will Day is keeping the country music vibes this month his impressive debut album ‘Countrifide’. Kicking the record off with two hard hitting, guitar driven tracks ‘Countrifide’ and ‘Bro’s’, Will slows things down a little with a beautiful country duet featuring Brooke Schubert. Continuing the trend of mixing mellow acoustic ballads with party starting anthems the twelve tracks solidify Will Day’s position among the Gold Coast elite collection of quality country music artists. Check out our full review in this edition.
Hinterland are proving that country music is stronger than ever on the Gold Coast right now with their slick, folk infused single ‘Giddy Up’. Led by a driving rhythm section the track sees electric guitar riffs and souring fiddle fight for attention over classic pop country melodies and punchy production. An undeniable country feminine power anthem written about showing your cheating man the door, ‘Giddy Up’ will cure that country music itch you didn’t know you had. Blank - issue #90 - September 2021
Tesh Batkins Catches You By Surprise
Casey Barnes Continues His Hot Streak
Golding Hit Gold
Jim Ottaway Takes You To Space
Tesh Batkins is turning things up this month with her dreamy electro-banger ‘Love You Just Like That’. Consciously taking a different lyrical direction to her previous work Batkins latest reflects on the good moments in relationships, focusing on the positive rather than getting caught up in the negative. With a spacious half time chorus that catches you by surprise every time it drops ‘Love You Just Like That’ is a brilliantly crafted song that showcases some serious potential from this young Gold Coast artist.
Keeping the electronic vibes strong this month is local duo Golding with their minimalist jam ‘Boxing Under Water’. Drawing influence from local powerhouses RÜFÜS DU SOL and Running Touch the awesome interplay between guest vocalist Cailin Russo and songwriter Jay Bainbridge gives the song a special kind of intimacy that builds and resonates throughout the entire track. Co-written by pop songwriter powerhouse Jarryd James, ‘Boxing Under Water’ shines brightly as Golding’s strongest release to date.
After picking up four nominations at the Gold Coast Music Awards, Casey Barnes is continuing his hot streak with his new single ‘God Took His Time On You’. Shedding some of his country roots and following more of a straight up acoustic pop sound, Casey’s latest is primed and ready to soar up the charts with its beautifully polished production, catchy hooks and relatable lyrical content. You can see Casey perform to a home crowd at Groundwater Country Music Festival this November.
Jim Ottaway is offering us something vastly different again this month with his ambient electronic album ‘Threshold Of the Universe’. A continuation of his series of “space” ambient releases the album is made up of nine tracks, all representing aspects of a space journey with the goal of taking the listener on a trip through the infinite universe. Recorded live as improvised studio recordings this album is wonderfully different and best consumed with an open mind.
Jamie Lane’s Intricate Soundscape
Another Buttered Beauty daste. Tease It’s rapid-fire releases for Buttered Debut Album
Raw Deep’s Sea Shanty
Tomi Gray’s Acoustic Pop Gem
Jamie Lane is giving us something vastly different this month with his luscious electronic gem ‘Attune’. The first single from a conceptual body of work to be released in the coming months Jamie Lane lacks no attention to detail here with an intricate soundscape that can only be truly appreciated through headphones. Written about the attenuation of suffering through authenticity ‘Attune’ is a deeply moving track, the work of a creative mastermind in overdrive.
Raw Deep are back with another epic rock single, this time adding some sea shanty vibes into the mix with their latest ‘Not All Smooth Sailing’. Leading with the epic vocal of Nathan Lindsay the track was first written several years ago then reimagined with the help of the unlikely collaborator Graeme McKean, whose resume boasts composing strings for Lord Of the Rings and touring with Sting. Released as a two track EP with a mood setting intro ‘Not All Smooth Sailing’ is a beautiful piece of music that broadens Raw Deep’s musical diversity even further.
who are back this month with another head turning statement of a single ‘Fat Heart’. Full and overflowing with dedication this sensual love song is rich with harmonies, warm instrumentation and an in the pocket rhythm section that drives the song along perfectly for its short, sharp three-minute length. With more singles to come, we can’t wait to see what these creative machines have in store for us next.
Showering us with quality releases over the past few months daste. are back yet again with the final single ahead of the release of their anticipated debut album. The short sharp teaser of a track which is all said in done in just over two minutes is simple in its presentation, showcasing the band’s ability beyond their smooth production skills into the raw talent of classic songwriting. Another nugget of gold here from daste. that has us overly excited for this full length album in October.
You never know what to expect when you hit play on a Tomi Gray track and his latest single ‘Asthma’ is no exception. Renowned for his wild and wonderful musical flavours, ‘Asthma’ sees Gray on the straight and narrow offering a low-key acoustic pop track with very little experimental moments whatsoever, and as tribute to his musical brilliance he really pulls it off. The captivating accompanying video takes an intimate look into Tomi’s creative space - a moody single garage / jam space surrounded by instruments and lava lamps. Emotive and alluring, ‘Asthma’ is the lead single from Tomi’s EP of the same name. Blank - issue #90 - September 2021
