T
he British Basketball League (BBL) has been at the pinnacle of British hoops since its inception in 1987, and represents the highest level of the professional game in the UK. The league has a colourful twenty-one year history including great teams, dynasties, memorable moments, and unforgettable players and coaches. Much of this fascinating history is documented within the pages of this website, click here to visit the history section. In the present day there are twelve franchises in major towns and cities across the nation, spanning Plymouth in the southwest all the way up to Glasgow north of the border. For more information about the current twelve franchises visit the teams section of this site. Franchise development is at the fore of the league’s strategic intentions, in order to bring top-level basketball to as many people as possible. BBL clubs are increasingly built on the foundations of strong community programmes, driven by the league’s Hoops4Health initiative. Whilst providing positive role models for young people, clubs are also actively involved in developing the next generation of British basketball players and promoting the sport, and associated healthy lifestyles, to young people in their localities. Worcester Wolves Tel: 01905 855000 about this highly acclaimed programme, and increasingly important aspect of the BBL, head over to the Hoops4Health section of this website. The BBL is a key partner in the development of basketball in Britain, and is striving for home-nation success in the 2012 Olympics and beyond, whilst also providing somewhere for local people to pick up a basketball in the constituencies of BBL clubs. The BBL consider both the national governing body, England Basketball, and the Team GB national programme, run by British Performance Basketball, to be prominent partners in the development of basketball in Britain. Further information about these organisations can be obtained via the links section. The BBL is owned and run by a twelveperson board, which includes one director from each club, and the league is administered by a central office. Email me with any queries: andy.webb@bbl.org.uk.

Heat to take on Eagles in Trophy final THE HEAT WERE the first team to qualify for the final cour tesy of a 187–161 two leg success over the Airwaves Plymouth Raiders. Surprisingly it was on the Raiders’ own floor where Heat took control of the tie with a 76-97 1st leg success making the return leg a formality for the Surrey based team. The Eagles made sure it would be a repeat of last season’s Trophy final match up with a 176-159 victory over the high flying Ever ton Tigers. Like the Heat, Eagles took the initiative in the tie with a 1st leg victory on the road (82-88) before finishing the job off at home (88-79).
It was to be sweet revenge for both teams who were eliminated by the same opposition at the same stage of the Cup competition earlier this season. In a new addition to the event this season, the BBL Three Point Shootout champion will be crowned as the sharpest shooters from around the league converge on Guildford for the final of the competition. Add to this the fabulous Kukri Allstarzz Dancers and you are guaranteed a day jam packed full of top class sporting enter tainment. The BBL Trophy has an illustrious twentyone year history and has been contested
ever since the BBL’s inception in 1987. The competition sees the BBL’s twelve clubs split into four groups. They play one another home and away within those groups and the teams that finish atop each progress to the semi-finals. This event is the culmination of that journey for the two most successful clubs and allows them a shot at the BBL Trophy. Tickets are selling extremely quickly with a sell out anticipated. Tickets are priced at £15 for adults and £10 for children and are available from Guildford Spectrum Box Office on 01483 44 33 33 or go online at bbl.org.uk.

Jelson Homes DMU Leicester Riders will face the final full month of the regular season shorn of their two leading scorers, as both Bradd Wierzbicki and Phil Missere face length spells on the sidelines. Wierzbicki, Riders’ top scorer averaging almost 20 points per game, tore ankle ligaments on Saturday night against Plymouth and faces three weeks of complete rest followed by another three weeks rehabilitation, meaning he may just return before the season ends.
Missere out for 4 weeks THE MISSERE, WHO tops the BBL charts in rebounding and blocked shots, had an MRI scan on a knee problem which has revealed a bone chip in the knee. He will see a specialist today, but will probably need surgery this week followed by an estimated three to four weeks recovery. A best-case scenario would see Missere miss only half of Riders’ remaining ten games and Wierzbicki returning in time for the last couple of regular season games, but neither is guaranteed to play another game this campaign. “In all my years in the BBL, I can’t recall a team that, so late in the year, has been hit with such a double-blow,” admitted Coach Rob Paternostro. “But we do have some good players who are still around and more importantly we have a bunch of guys that have been very resilient all year. “Those two players have really dictated
how we’ve played in the past couple of months. We are going to have to play in certain ways that we haven’t done before and try to figure out how our guys can play without these two important players.” Riders entered the month level in fourth spot in the Championship table, their highest position at the start of March since 1991 and only the third time in BBL history they had held such a lofty spot at that time of year. “I am proud of what we’ve done, but it is a long, long year and we have a lot of time to make another impact on the season. I have confidence in the guys. Sure it hurts. Saturday night was the most hurtful loss of the year, but as I said to the guys afterwards, ‘nobody is going to feel sorry for us, we just have to find some new ways to get it done’,” added Paternostro. Rockets win National Trophy A DOMINANT FOURTH period paved the way for Reading Rockets to win the EBL National Trophy with a 74-56 victory against Manchester Magic. The Rockets were ahead by four going into the final quarter, but outscored Manchester 20-6 in the fourth period to extend their winning streak to 29 games. With the National Cup already won, and the EBL Division One title virtually sealed, Dave Titmuss’ side can now look at a clean sweep and the possibility of a perfect season. American forward Ryan Lohfink collected the Most Valuable Player award, finishing with 16 points, six rebounds, two assists and a steal for the Rockets in 29 minutes of action. His team-mate Rich Welings drained five threepointers on the way to 19 points, while David Watts added 15 and both Terell Smith and Simon Kearney chipped in with eight points apiece. Magic’s Tanner Adu led all scorers with 20 points and nine rebounds, with Steve Boonham scoring 12 and Brandon Kimbrough ten. Leading 54-50, Rockets opened the fourth period scoring through Watts, and
quickly extended the lead to 60-50 before an Adu free-throw with 7:05 remaining got Jeff Jones’ side off the mark for the quarter. That proved to be only a temporary respite for the Magic as Welling drained a three-pointer to give Rockets a double digit lead again. Gill scored from downtown to reduce the Reading lead to seven with 4:48 remaining, but incredibly that proved to the last time that Manchester would score as Reading poured in the final 11 points of the game. Carl Latham-Henry poured in 32 points as Leopards moved up to second place in EBL Division One with a comfortable 108-84 victory against Derby Trailblazers at Wodson Park, on Saturday. The 26-year-old Englishman drained all three of his three-point attempts and scored 11 of his 18 two-point efforts in 37 minutes of action, and dished out eight assists to give the Big Cats their tenth league win of the campaign. Hrvoje Pervan finished with a 19 point, 11 rebound double-double, while Gareth Laws (14), Leigh Greenan (13), Russell Jordan (11) and Ronnie Baker (10) n double figures for the home side.
Ex-Eagle sets up ABA team For a BBL legend and the Newcastle Eagles are playing a part in helping to put pride into a city that wants to further strengthen its strong community and showcase its talents across America. Enter TJ “The Daddy” Walker, the new owner-coach-player of the Modesto Bearcats, the newest franchise in the American Basketball Association (ABA) after being
formed in June, 2008. This weekend, ‘Big Dad’ will use all of the experience he picked up during his glittering career in the BBL to tip off the biggest basketball challenge of his life to date. Especially when it comes to using basketball to make positive changes. He explained “We get a bad press when it comes to basketball but the city loves it.”

Team GB handed tough EuroBasket draw CHRIS FINCH’S TEAM face their biggest challenge yet Great Britain have been drawn against reigning world champions Spain in next year’s EuroBasket finals in Poland. GB will also face former Yugoslav nations Serbia and Slovenia in a tough opening group in Warsaw. “There’s no doubt about it, we’re clearly in the toughest group,” said GB coach Chris Finch. “It’ll be our biggest challenge so far - no doubt.” Only the top three teams in the first-
round groups will advance to the second phase of the tournament. Last summer’s heroics in winning their qualifying group meant Finch’s team reached the European finals for the first time in 28 years. They need to show consistency at the top European level to convince world governing body Fiba they are worthy of a host’s spot in the 2012 Olympics. They will need some serious shot blockers and help defense, but it also provides the chance to pass the ball to other players. BasketBall magazine 09

The former Eagles playmaker is planning to reward Paul Blake and the Eagles for the
opportunity and support he was given during his time on Tyneside by offering some of his most talented players to his former club. “We are looking forward to starting the season on the 7th and I have a few guys that have already showed me that they can play at the BBL level and higher.” explained Walker. “Hopefully the Modesto Bearcats will be a feeder to the BBL” “We are looking forward to starting the season on the 7th and I have a few guys that have already showed me that they can play at the BBL level and higher.” explained Walker. Tigers win first BBL title Everton Tigers won their first ever BBL title on Sunday, as they defeated the Airwaves Plymouth Raiders 103-49 in the BBL Cup Final at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham. The game produced the largest ever winning margin in a Cup Final and Tigers the most points by a winning side. Iʼve found the reason why point guards donʼt block shots... It’s because they don’t want to. What’s the point of going to block a shot when you’ll likely miss and your player gets the followup tip-in, even if he’s a well-respected three point shooter? Ummm.. leave it for the big men - like Pops

B ace Pops Mensah-Bonsu uses perfect timing and athletic ability to ensure his feared reputation as a shot blocker is taken seriously when players try to shoot over him At 6’9” and with a vertical leap of 40”, London-born Pops Mensah-Bonsu likes it when the opposition goes to the basket softly; because in return he kindly blocks their shot – and gets their ‘weak stuff outta there!’ Pops, 25, is an explosive leaper and once played for the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks. With his jumping skills and basketball experience, his ability to make players think twice before they shoot has gained Great Britain (alongside teammate Luol Deng) a place in the European Championship basketball finals in Poland later this year. Pops has mastered the art of blocking shots by springing from the floor quickly to deflect the ball before its downward flight and he doesn’t react to opponents’ pump fakes, which players do to get defenders in foul trouble. He plays with top Spanish side DKV Joventut, where he currently denies anybody easy lay-ups!
‘reject’ and ‘check’ other people’s shots with ease. Keep reading... STEP 1. Firstly, the shot blocker must have good timing and be able to accurately judge when a player is about to take a shot. This allows the defender the chance of blocking the shot on its way up or at its highest peak.
HOW TO BLOCK SHOTS EFFECTIVELY Ever wondered how players like Pops Mensah-Bonsu and NBA’s Marcus Camby

STEP 2. If the ball is touched as it is coming down, a goaltending penalty will be called and the basket will automatically count, therefore, you must also have quickness. If an opponent has an easy lane to the basket, you’ll need quickness to go along with your timing to get over and block the shot.

you the advantage when attempting to block their shot. STEP 4. The defender must not touch the offensive player’s hands or otherwise a foul is called. A good shot blocker will keep the ball in play. As glamorous as it is to send a guy’s shot into the first row, if you can block the shot, gather the ball and pass it out to your teammates, it’s more productive than just blocking the shot out of bounds.

Team GB go for gold at EuroBasket With Luol Deng, Pops Mensah-Bonsu, Nate Reinking and Andrew Sullivan all lined up to play in Poland, Britain’s chance for glory is now Brixton boy: Deng will show leadership as GB need to get past Spain
Difficult times They need to show consistency at the top European level to convince world governing body Fiba they are worthy of a host’s spot in the 2012 Olympics. It’s going to be difficult but there’s no reason to be scared of anybody But the draw in Warsaw, in which GB were e of the fourth seeds, did them few favours in their quest to establish themselves among the European elite. World champions Spain are arguably the best team in Europe at the moment. They reached the last EuroBasket final two years ago and won
an Olympic silver medal in Beijing. Slovenia regularly qualify for the European finals and came close to securing their first Olympic berth earlier this year. Third seeds Serbia were world champions in 2002 and won the European title five times from 1989-2001. “They’ve been down but they’re on the rise again a bit,” noted Finch.“They seem to be going in the right direction. It’s going to be difficult but there’s no reason to be scared of anybody.” Great Britain have received a pretty decent draw and could even qualify from their group if they get some luck Great Britain will open their EuroBasket campaign in Warsaw against Slovenia on 7 September and will play Spain and then Serbia in the next two days.

If they make the top three in Group C, they will qualify for the second phase in Lodz against the three best teams from Group D. The final phase of the tournament - the last eight - will be played in Katowice from 18-20 September.
“If Ben Gordon had stepped up to play for Great Britain, who knows how good this team could have been? Fingers crossed for now, though” If Great Britain can reach the second phase, they will stand a good chance of making the 2010 World Championships, by virtue of either a qualifying spot or as one of four other teams Fiba will invite.

B coach Chris Finch knows his team have to deliver. Great Britain have been drawn against reigning world champions Spain in next year’s EuroBasket finals in Poland. GB will also face former Yugoslav nations Serbia and Slovenia in a tough opening group in Warsaw. “There’s no doubt about it, we’re clearly in the toughest group,” said GB coach Chris Finch. “It’ll be our biggest challenge so far - no doubt.” Only the top three teams in the first-round groups will advance to the second phase of the tournament. Last summer’s heroics in winning their qualifying group meant Finch’s team reached the European finals for the first time in 28 years.

Brown was asked if he would like to coach 28 BasketBall magazine
France but he replied no, although he would “like to give a helping hand”. Veteran forward Florent Pietrus of Pamesa Valencia, who missed last summer’s campaign while he rehabilitated his knee following an operation, says that no matter who takes the reins, France will be a force to be reckoned with.
BasketBall magazine: We really enjoyed watching you play for France at the last two EuroBaskets and at the 2006 FIBA World Championship. You weren’t able to play last summer when France finished second in their qualifying group to Turkey. Are you going to play for France again?
Pietrus: Of course, of course. We have a nice oppor tunity. We lost the qualifications last summer and we have only one chance to get to the European Championship (EuroBasket). I hope that everyone will be there to help France qualify. Italy will be a tough team to beat in your group, though. Yes, I think it’s going to be between us and Italy, but I think we have a good chance to make this European Championship. There is one other matter. Who is going to be the coach? I don’t know. Up to now, we don’t know. But it doesn’t matter. What is more impor tant is July 5 when we star t the preparations and like I said before try to get to the European Championship.
Stand and deliver: GB’s Pops goes up high for the putback
You have played in Spain for a long time. How do you like the basketball in the country’s top flight, the ACB? It’s great. For me, it’s one of the best championships in Europe because after the NBA, every NBA player goes straight to Spain. That makes the level higher. That’s why it’s important for us in the EuroCup and winning this game (against Azovmash) because we have an opportunity (to win a trophy). In the ACB, it’s going to be tough to play against such teams as Tau, Barcelona. This (EuroCup) is our competition, so we have to give 100% to achieve something.
Question Time
Is the NBA the best basketball league in the world?
The NBA is one of the greatest basketball leagues in the history of the game. I say ‘one of ’ because of the 2004 Olympics, which saw the USA fail to reach the basketball finals and come in a woeful and unexpected third place, especially given the talent of the squad that included Allen Iverson, Tim Duncan and LeBron James, who all captured our creative imaginations regularly with their fantastic skills and b-ball tricksThe Olympics put the NBA in check and reality of world basketball has spoken. I still feel that the USA can still dominate the Olympics and continue their Dream Team run, particularly as the players of the NBA continues to impress and the general tenacity of the game leaves me in awe. But until the American players of the NBA win another Olympic gold medal, I’ll still label the NBA as ‘one of ’. In the meantime, however, the NBA has brought its fans more entertainment than probably “Can Tony Parker be enough to assist any other sport, and its frequent display of quality drama does not disappoint. France through to the EuroBasket And the 2006 Playoffs once again Finals – we think not, but many proved the intensity of basketball can people have doubted them before” be extremely high and this year saw the

When fans at Miami are wearing all white, the Dallas owner, Mark Cuban is getting fined obscene amounts of money and Damon Jones is still capable of hitting the money ball, it makes you realise why you’re glued to the screen and why you enjoy the game in the first place. You may not say their silly phrase, ‘I love this game’ but it’s something that is easy to agree with. And with that all said and dusted, let’s see if the talent of the NBA can manage to follow form and remind the world at the 2008 Olympics that its league is not only ‘one of ’ but is truly the greatest in the world. “If a business fails to progress because itʼs underachieving, itʼs not the sponsorʼs fault – itʼs the CEOʼs!” A cash cow During the 2007 America’s Cup, yachting fans accused Bertarelli, the owner of the Swiss team, of bad form in “purchasing key members of the New Zealand team”, or effectively buying up the best of the opposition. Why? Well, probably because he could. Biotechnology tycoon Bertarelli, 42, is one of Switzerland’s richest men. His Swiss team has won yachting’s prestigious America’s Cup twice on the trot — beating New Zealand by just one second in a dramatic finish last year. Bertarelli, who was born in Rome, makes it into our list with his blonde wife, Kirsty, a former Miss
United Kingdom from Staffordshire. Last year she created a special clothing range to show her support for the Swiss team and she is regularly to be seen smashing Moët against a new boat. Also a songwriter, she helped write the All Saints No 1 hit Black Coffee in 2000, which was about her husband. The couple have three children. When they were dating, Kirsty tried to demonstrate that she could cook. She recalls: “I brought a chicken home and put it in the oven, only to find that his chef had also put a chicken in the oven — so we had an argument about whose chicken should be in there. As the chickens were flying around the kitchen, Ernesto said, ‘I don’t care whose roast chicken it is, I just want to have some dinner!’ Anyhow we now have two kitchens, one for me and another for the chef.” Bertarelli prefers to stay out of the limelight and drink beer in a London pub rather than quaff champagne. By the age of 31, following his father’s death, he was running Serono, . Back in 1947, Serono’s researchers discovered a natural hormone, urinary gonadotropin, which could be used to treat infertility. To ensure good quality material, they turned to the nuns of an Italian convent, with the Vatican’s blessing. The Genevabased company became the world leader in reproductive treatments B

aving a sponsor is like having an older brother – they’re always there for you. Or so, they should be. You’ve got a great business plan and you’re destined to make money but it doesn’t work out. Oh, well... (The rest is not real copy... just rich men!) Abramovich, 41, may have spent £578m on Chelsea since he bought the London club in 2003 but he has not lost his appetite for business outside football. The Russian made his fortune in oil but now has a £200m stake in the gold mining group Highland Gold, a smart move with the precious metal hitting $1,000 an ounce. He also has a stake worth £6.2 billion in Evraz, one of Russia’s largest steel group s. His £150m divorce settlement last year made little impression on the Abramovich fortune. The success story started when, with Boris Berezovsky (qv), he bought the Sibneft oil operation for about £120m. When it was sold in 2005 for £7.5 billion, most of that went to Abramovich. Forbes values him at £11.57 billion while Russian business magazine Finans goes for £11.83 billion. We settle for a mid-point of £11.7 billion.

ot real copy: ‘The traveling rule has not changed. What has changed is the common use of the jump stop as an offensive move. Officials and coaches are having difficulty determining the difference between a legal and illegal move. The key to making this determination properly is first finding the pivot foot. Then, if the player moves a foot or the feet in any direction in excess of prescribed limits while holding the ball, a traveling violation has occurred. Countermoves are vital to a back-to-thebasket player. If the defender knows where you plan to turn or what shot you are looking to create, he can “sit” on the move and cut it off. Great post players have at least two counters to every move, but they get to the counter by first trying to execute the original move. When the defender repositions to cut off that move, the countermove is immediately executed. The proper counter is one that takes the best advantage of the defender’s new positioning. The key to the turnaround jump shot, a staple in NBA games, is the leg drive and the follow-through. Since the player’s body flow is taking him away from the rim, he must use his legs and get a strong follow-through to ensure the ball reaches the target. Most players use a high release point to 32 BasketBall magazine
ensure the ball gets over the defender’s hands, but Elton Brand relies on bringing the ball slightly behind his head on his release. Players who grew up playing the post while a bit undersized often resort to this style, but they don’t make the shot nearly as often as Brand. Smaller guys, like Dwyane Wade and Kobe Bryant, usually fade away on the release, demanding an even stronger leg drive and follow-through. Kevin Garnett KG is so quick that the defenders must react quickly to his moves, setting him up for the easy counter. And his release point is too high for defenders to block his shot. HOW TO MASTER THE TEAR DROP
Chicago Bulls’ ace Ben Gordon may not be the tallest player, but he still leaves defenders flat-footed with his ‘tear drop’ move

he ‘tear drop’.The shot was given the name because the ball drops down from the high point of the arc like a falling tear drop. Britishborn Benjamin “Ben” Gordon (born April 4, 1983) is a one of the few NBA players who successfully uses this move to take away the defender’s timing to try and deny the shooter access to the basket. The shot is also called a runner or a floater. Gordon has perfected the shot to the point where defenders not only fear his reputed three-point shooting accuracy (he once went 9-for-9 in a game)

Chantelle: I played basketball a bit with my father when I was young, but I started playing for a youth team when I was 14. Why did you want to play in the US? I was playing for England U16s at the European Championships, and a scout asked if I’d thought about playing in the US. I decided to give it a go, went to high school and then on to university. power hop to further back the defender up. This will make the opposition play honest, especially when you suddenly leap forward and step inside the painted area of the key. Step 3. As the distance between your shooting hand and the basket is ever-changing, you will need to anticipate this change in distance before letting the ball go and adjust your shooting power accordingly. Step 4. Your defender should still be standing on the ground, which then allows you to shoot the ball with use where necessary. B
How was it like leaving home at 16? It was scary because I’d never been away by myself before. During pre-seson, we get up ay 6am and do weights. The I have lessons from 8am till midday. We also have individual workouts from 1-3pm. What are your hopes for the future? To do well in my education and then play in Europe. I would love to play in Spain. B
