to our Keeping/Staying Safe Module As an integral part of our seven available modules, the ‘Keeping/Staying Safe’ section provides children with the opportunity to explore potential risks and dangers in a variety of situations. Wherever children are, at home, school, in the locality, near water, railways, or roads, there is an element of potential danger. Ofsted inspections consider whether pupils are able to assess and manage risk appropriately and keep themselves safe.

Learning outcomes for this module: All pupils will... • be able to identify potential dangers in different environments • be able to follow rules for and practise simple ways of keeping safe and finding help • be able to use simple skills and strategies which will help them maintain their personal safety around other people PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic education) provides an ideal platform for teaching and learning about risks and keeping safe. Teaching children to keep safe or become safer is about giving them the opportunity to recognise and communicate their feelings whilst enabling them to develop the strategies to avoid or manage situations which place them at risk. Concepts such as ‘taking risks’ and ‘being at risk’ are not easy for younger children to understand and can best be explored through opportunities that focus on risky behaviours in other people. Together with full lesson plans, the video clips in this module provide such opportunities.

Following our most recent consultation with the PSHE Association, we are pleased to introduce our new Learning Journal resource. At no extra cost, every child will now receive a Student Learning Journal alongside their individual Activity Workbook.

Learning Journals offer more opportunities to assess each child’s progression throughout the modules. This resource allows children to log their learning for each module, providing a perfect assessment record for external organisations to view.

Medpacs are practical bags which have been specially designed for storing and carrying medicines safely and securely and come complete with a Photo ID Card for easy identification in any situation, and a Treatment Card to write all the essential information required to administer the medicine. Medpac is the brainchild of Jayne Tarrant, a mum who saw a need for such a product when her own daughter was diagnosed with a condition that required her to carry emergency medicine with her at all times. Not able to find a product to fulfil the need, Jayne set about designing and sourcing a product that would work in many situations. Jayne explains “I wanted to find a solution that was durable, hard-wearing, easy to find in an emergency and affordable and I believe that Medpac has achieved these objectives.

Effective Training to Support Leaders and Deliverers of PSHE Education Effective leadership, management and delivery of PSHE requires confident and trained teachers and professionals. The National PSHE CPD Programme, established by the DfE in 2002, has been built upon established PSHE, health and education expertise. The National PSHE CPD Programme team, based within Babcock 4S, have been managing and delivering the programme, in association with the University of Roehampton since 2006. In this time the programme has supported teachers, HLTAs, Police, SRE professionals, Youth Support Service and School Nursing teams nationally in the development of their subject knowledge, understanding, proficiency and confidence in PSHE education.

Ofsted have reported that, “PSHE subject knowledge had been improved by teachers and school nurses achieving the National PSHE CPD Certificate.” Participants are overwhelmingly positive and enthusiastic about the programme and the way in which it enables them to develop needs based, high quality PSHE, whilst making necessary links to whole school approaches to safeguarding, SMSC, British values, mental health, emotional literacy and behaviour. “The course has made a huge difference to my practice and my confidence leading it. I have been asked to support two other schools in the local area with their PSHE. Amazing!!! All this has happened since I handed in my essay! It really has opened so many doors for us.” PSHE Lead Currently recruiting for courses in London, Surrey and Leeds beginning academic year 2015/2016. Courses also available nationwide.

David was extremely fragile, having been seriously bullied over a prolonged period. Why was he bullied? Partly that he was quiet, a bit chubby, not sporty, and liked to do academic work. Fear and worry about being constantly beaten and verbally abused made him ill. He dropped out of school and spent all of his time in his room, often with the wardrobe pushed across the door. Luckily, David found help through Northleigh House, an organisation funded in part by the Ben Cohen StandUp Foundation. David is now recovered and his exam results assured him a place at a local college, where he now studies full-time. The Ben Cohen StandUp Foundation raises awareness of the long-term negative effects of bullying and provides support to those organisations doing work on the front line to stop it. Your donations and fundraising activities can help people like David.
