For years I’ve been trying to expand my horizon beyond a landscape architect. Graphic designer, coder, installation maker, movie maker, researcher, dreamer, photographer... My deep interest in coding and technology leads me to a path of digital world. In there, I discover my true love for visualizing and digital art.

Fairy tales span millenniums and cultural boundaries with their special way of communicating complex ideas through simple, yet fantastical means. They are the first form of narration we are acquainted with as children. They are usually told or read by a person we are close to and trust, and they speak to us about situations and worlds that are foreign and distant, yet understandable. Fairy tales are our gateway to significance, to making sense of the intricacies of the real world we get to know as we age. They present us with problems and with ways in which they are dealt with by their protagonists, who often have to prove themselves in the course of the story, or are called to choose their friends and to identify enemies, or must find the resources in themselves to overcome whatever situation they are called to act upon. They are paradigmatic of experiences we haven’t yet had, decisions we haven’t yet made, feelings we haven’t yet felt, but surely will. Without us being cognizant, they are our first training in logic, in empathy and in creativity.

I met a cat. It can’t be true. Well at least not in my neighborhood. Usually a cat lives in the upper-class neighborhoods like Upper side or near the mountain where the Buddha stands. My neighborhood is filled with slums, disease and violent. A cat will never come here. For thousands of years, we human beings had been fighting against each other, for religious, civil rights, gender, resource and so on…Until cats came along and put all these dispute into an end. Cat became the ultimate symbol for everything. The scale of our cities started to change to adapt cat’s lifestyle.
ShiChen Portfolio
Vertical structure is preferred, and strings are everywhere for cats to walk on. Tons of litter were dumped in suburban area. Farmlands were transferred into catnip fields. To be adopted by a cat, a catnip field is a must-have. And the waiting list is already endless now. I am still working my way up to gain my first catnip box. For those who cannot afford buying a field, you can purchase a laboratory catnip box with lower fee. Sometimes, they are still attractive to some domestic cats. And now there is a cat standing in front of me. I looked at her perfect, turquoise peaceful eyes, thinking about how to start a conversation without scaring her away. That is when I heard the voice.
2018
ShiChen Portfolio 2018
“Human being No. 13594652, agree for adoption?” “To hell yes!” What just happened? “Man, he’s lucky” “Wow that almost never happened!” “A cat would never adopt such a loser!!” Before I realized, I am finally a decent human being with a cat and I can walk with my head held up high. Now I’m gonna show her my first box. “Meow~”
ShiChen Portfolio
From there, after two days and three nights road trip, we arrive at Minty Heaven, the rose-colored town everyone talks about, well exposed to the moon, with these Paw305 scattered around a tower which we couldn’t tell it real or a mirage. “I cannot believe you don’t know our little Minty for the past of your 26-year life.” “Uh, why am I supposed to know it? Well I mean, whatever this world is trying to convince me to believe, I don’t believe...” “But you should believe your eyes. Here it is, the world’s most profitable catnip industry, known across the universe. You’ve heard of Sweet Tooth or Minty Bucks, right? “
2018
ShiChen Portfolio
“Sort of. I usually don’t care about those kitty stuff… but they have commercials everywhere…” “Their product line starts here. Right in front of you.”
2018
We walk towards the core tower, which I prefer not to call it a tower but a vertical miniature city. I can see these Paw305 are constantly producing bags and bags of beautiful processed catnip, and they are ready for direct purchase. The little drones are buzzing above my head, watching over the growth and health of the vast catnip field which sprawls to the edge of this town.
ShiChen Portfolio
“But I have to tell you, Minty Heaven is famous, but in a notorious way also. Individual catnip trading was once banned a couple of years ago due to a news A journalist from Meow Times tried to dig into this big industry in Minty Heaven to make it to the headline. So, this guy disguised as a laid-off white collar and applied to work here in the industry. Guess what he found?” “Stoned cats?” “Seven years ago, the government purchased 843 acres vacant land south-east of Minty Heaven. That area is supposed to be high-density residential in the city’s zoning plan. The old mayor wanted to propose more affable housings there to accommodate millions of people who are homeless or nearly homeless in the city.
2018
ShiChen Portfolio 2018
But these are only some in-house decisions, the public don’t know anything about it. Unfortunately, the mayor was found dead in his own house a few weeks later. It was a big news.” “I still remember that news. But how does it affect catnip industry?” “Minty Heaven purchased the 843 acres right after our poor mayor died. And that is what you see now, 843 acres of endless catnip farm, with thousands of cheap labors working here for our LORD cats.” “I thought you like Minty Heaven?” “It’s complicated. As far as I know, the loss of home for those people did result in many problems. Afterwards the city can’t be any dense and crowded anymore.”
ShiChen Portfolio
“And greedy.” “Agree. And hopeless.” I still remember the awe and what I see when we enter the core tower. Every building is highly compacted. They are plied together in a weird or chaotic but somehow organized and efficient way. Every possible planting space is occupied by catnip. Basically, catnips are everywhere. Stoned cats are everywhere. The rosy light makes me dizzy, I have to leave.

ShiChen Portfolio 2018
I was brought up in a Meowism family. My parents told me the luckiest thing in their life ever is to be adopted together by an elegant noble Irish cat. “Wait a second… why isn’t the luckiest thing to have you born?!” “That’s my question too!” “What’s the story then?” “It was not fair for my parents that the Irish cat kept adopting more and more people. They are competitive. They are difficult. You know what shit usually goes on between high school girls. It’s kind of like that.” “Absolutely.” “My parents were in charge of providing food and catnips for their cat every day. In other words, they are the proud CEOs – chief entertainment officers. Purchasing catnips wasn’t an easy thing in their time since there weren’t many catnip industry out there like Minty Heaven.” “I can guess what happened to them. They felt bad because their lord wasn’t happy about not having catnips every day with meal? And they were forced to leave the family? “
ShiChen Portfolio
“Exactly. After they left the cat, they had me. They can’t afford living in the Upper side anymore, but they still desire to live in a neighborhood where there are many cats. That’s why we moved here near the buddha year ago. Now you can see, they are helping with building this gigantic cat buddha here.” “It is a job?”“Not really. They volunteer to do so, there are hundreds of people working with them now. They get donations from people living in the Upper side.” “I don’t understand. Your parents could have got decent jobs in the city. They are smart people.” “It’s their belief. They choose to believe that they want to believe. I can’t believe this Buddha is still under construction for all these years. It is the Mecca for Meowists!” “Maybe they choose to believe what this world wants them to believe.” “No debate.” 2018
ShiChen Portfolio 2018
“Welcome, my followers. Now brief me the latest update” “No. 13594651, all normal. Perfectly submissive. Clean litter box every two days. Catnip, once a week” “Eligible for purge?” “Negative.” “Good, stay on watching.” “No. 13594652, Meowism, Poor economically performance. Low human self-control. Selfabuse tendency. Filthy, Slow and lazy” “Eligible for purge?” “…Positive” “System process and proceed” “Meow” …
ShiChen Portfolio
I had this dream last night. I woke up in a cold place, surrounded by millions of cats. They look exactly the same, like half-finished stuff animals. It was so real that I can even feel the little paws and tails sweeping over my face, but they are so cold and I couldn’t move. This emotionless voice and series of numbers keep haunting in my head. “Eligible for purge… eligible for purge… for purge… purge…” “13594652, 13594652, 13594652, 13594652, 13594652…” …… “Wake up, my people. Welcome back, No. 13594652.” I slowly opened my eyes, “may I ask a question my lord?” “Meow.” “What is the ultimate answer of universe?” “42 probably.” 2018

In order to understand cities better, we need to shed light on the dark side of them and understand why rational planning is contested. While we know that the traditional goal of city planning is to form generalized rules and impose order to all, the informality challenges this top-down process. But they do have unique historical and economic driving forces behind. Here I take no stands on whether this activity should be brought under a formal system, but by understanding the logic and norms governing these processes from a landscape architecture perspective; we might be able to redesign them to better fit in the context.

Photos of tourists lounging in lawn chairs in the middle o Times Square made headlines in the summer of 2009. The cheap plastic chairs quickly collapsed, unable to keep up with the demand to occupy the street at “The Crossroads of the World.” The scene deftly transformed the symbolic meaning of the road, telling a story of western culture awakening to the idea that walking, biking, and lounging in the street is not only healthier and more productive than choking in traffic, it’s more fun. Defining the future of roads is also a formidable challenge. They are interdependent amalgams of geology, hydrology, climate, vegetation, paving technologies, sinage and lighting systems which encounter neighboring land uses, demographics, and circulation patterns. A proposal that affects one aspect of the system has to anticipate the implications across the entire corridor. Our thinking about roads must scale.

Tanja Waterfront - Morocco Mikyoung Kim Design Tanja, Morocco Professional Work
Portfolio
Tanja is a famous tourist city in north Morocco. Here, we are trying to design an active and beautiful waterfront for this city. Meanwhile, the design language we use is meticulously considered to represent both Moroccan and Islamic culture. In this project, I was designated to design the waterfront tower which is considered as one of the signature structure in this project. Also, during the SD phase, I did an Islamic pattern study through grasshopper.
The complexity and variety of Islamic patterns used evolved from simple stars and lozenges in the ninth century, through a variety of 6- to 13-point patterns by the 13th century, and finally to include also 14- and 16-point stars in the sixteenth century. Through Grasshopper, we may recreate this pattern through mathematic rules. More than that, more variations may be created through the introduction of attractors and repulsive elements.

Industry is an object of fascination because it captures so many sides of the modern story, good and bad. The dock workers, the engineers, the inventors, the capitalist titans and labor organizers, strikes and political movements, rapidly growing cities and squalid working conditions and the rise of a working class, environmental changes and rivers on fire and policies to protect water and air—it is all there. But rarely is this story told from a landscape perspective. That is what we have attempted to do here. A landscape perspective offers a unique and potent framework for understanding the histories, values, and possible futures of industry, especially now as the pace of environmental and social change seems to only accelerate This report and the research herein attempt to lay out a framework for (a) understanding/interpreting the Port of Baltimore and (b) developing a distinct design language for a re-imagined Baltimore Museum of Industry campus. It includes primary research, secondary research, and design projection. It brings to the surface the hidden beauty of the Port of Baltimore and the sublime scale of its industrial operations. It describes the Port and its terminals as a set of logistical relationships, as cultivated/domesticated landscapes, and as evolving ecological, economic, and social processes. It offers a design vision that speaks to all of these things. In doing so, the Baltimore Atlas of Industry celebrates Maryland’s industrial legacy and shows how innovation is and can fuel progress.

What if the zoo is part of your everyday life? What if the zoo is where story happens? What if the hippo is your secret tree hole? We blend the zoo into the urban context, and merge people’s daily route into our site. By connecting its north and south, the corridors we proposed provide multiple shortcuts. People who live nearby can take the zoo paths every day to work, school and other destinations. The zoo is no longer a place that you only go once, it is a place where you walk by every day and make stories happen. It is your secret garden. You would build a true connection with the animals. They are no longer just trapped animals, but your life savers. Kids that get bullied in the school will become friends with the baby bears on their way to school. Girls who just start a whole new life in this city will treat giraffe as her first new friend to lash about her boss, work and her loneliness. Old couple who barely see their kids will visit the baby hippo as their new “kids”. Hopefully, we will all find our missing parts of life in this zoo.
