CHURAKI An epic music production inspired by the story of Churaki; an Aboriginal man heralded as the Gold Coast’s first surf lifesaver. Churaki, a Goodjingburra man, performed the first documented act of lifesaving on the Gold Coast in 1911. This was one of many daring rescues he carried out in the early 1900's as the surf bathing craze took hold. A heroic story, largely unknown, The Spirit of Churaki honours a rich lineage of saltwater people, a spirit of generosity, a deep connection to country and cultural obligation. Starring an extraordinary line up of legendary Australian musicians under the musical direction of Brian Ritchie (Violent Femmes) and cultural collaborator Kyle Slabb (Banaam) with evocative visuals by renowned artist Vernon Ah Kee, this production is a musical collaboration united by the spirit of the surf. Presented as a full night of entertainment, The Spirit of Churaki rides the perfect wave between traditional ceremony, the ancient sounds of Aboriginal language and compelling music theatre, closing with a cyclonic set by Australian surf rock legends, The Break.

A DIFFERENT KIND OF
ACTIVIST Aunty Joyce Summers is an Elder and activist with a passion for education. How do we change attitudes in terms of appreciating and embracing our Indigenous culture?
We have to get educated and place ourselves where we can make a difference.
I see it as coming through the school system. Our kids and nonIndigenous kids, they're the future of this country, so you have to let them know about past events, things that did happen but they should never be allowed to happen again, and about the history of our people, the history of their people. We were more than just black fellas running about in the bush naked. We were more than that. We had a society that worked for us and a culture that worked for us. I'm not what you call an ... well I am an activist, but I'm an activist in a different way. I can get on my soapbox if you like, but I try not to. I do cross-cultural training and my son says when I start getting carried away, he just says, "Mum, Mum, Mum." We're there to give the facts and to teach, not blame people. Just to teach and give them the facts and
they can make up their own minds. Our job as cross-cultural trainers is not to say, "You people did it." because those people didn't do it. It's not those people. The younger (Indigenous) ones seem to want to embrace different cultures these days, so our younger ones have to be reminded that the freedom that you have today comes at a price. A lot of people had to fight for the right to walk the streets without being hassled, without having people having a racist attitude. Even to have our own recognition as being Australians in this country. Now that Churaki has been recognised as someone who is an identity and being the first lifesaver is something that I think should always be remembered. Tell us about your involvement in The Spirit of Churaki project?

It’s a pretty complicated brief because it involves having to delve into the local stories of the Aboriginal people and in particular the Aboriginal music, but also the visual aspects of it, and the philosophical aspects of it. How it ties into the Gold Coast history, in general. Also, how it ties into the Gold Coast surf culture and surf life. It's a pretty elaborate story to tell. And then to do it in an artistic way and not make it too didactic, it's gotta be entertaining. And it has to have musical power. Kyle Slabb is the elder of the Fingal mob and he's also a really good musician. He told us the stories, the mythology of the area, some of the historical figures.
together and singing, chanting in their language, some of the precolonial stuff. Gradually people just started playing the other instruments. I had my Shakuhachi (flute) and some of the other people had bass guitar, drum set. And within about twenty minutes, it was revved up into this kind of chant with really jazzy improvising on top of it. At the end of it everybody was like, looking at each other… "Oh, that's cool." And then Kyle said, "I didn't know that we could mix the two." That was the break through.

That's why I love dance so much, because it's not necessarily language based. Someone who's participating in the work will literally be looking over and seeing another community member that they would otherwise have no connection to, so that's the space where they can meet.
We have so much opportunity to be in our bodies in our daily lives in Australia with so much potential to really live a dynamic, kaleidoscopic creative culture.

INFLUENCES ON THE ROAD TO
I grew up with a strong sense of adventure. I did a lot of hitchhiking and caught my first and only freight train when I was 15, it was too dirty for me. I actually wanted to be a writer and won some prizes at school, but I never thought of myself as a performer because I was far too introverted a personality. When I left school I knew a guy whose girlfriend was a dancer and she encouraged me to start. At the same time I’d get ribbed when I played sport for looking “like a ballet dancer”. I guess I was in some way graceful, but it was only a hobby. After leaving school I did some ballet classes, the teachers were encouraging but I never took it seriously. Instead I went hitching all over the country and I was really fortunate that I had a stepmother

who worked for Pan Am. She got me a free standby airfare to America. I hitched over there too, I was a travel bum. I’m very aware now of how those years shaped me. I work in dance and physical theatre, but the stories I’m interested in are based in human experience. It was partly a curiosity that came from some of my hitchhiking experiences because you’re meeting people all the time. All sorts of people. You have a very quick moment where you share something special and intimate in the exchange because, often, you’re a confessional. They’re really weighted exchanges.

Kyle Slabb is a musician and Indigenous spokesperson for The Spirit of Churaki, bringing cultural principles to the heart of this artistic creation. What cultural knowledge and practice informed the creation of The Spirit of Churaki performance?
Music’s always been a voice for Aboriginal people and lots of other people to be able to put forward ideas and ideals.
The land is the centre of identity for Aboriginal people. It's at the heart of the whole cultural framework. That's the beginning of everything for us. Everything comes out of that — language, our law and ceremony. Churaki’s a hero and he’s actually actioning a cultural principle as a person that belongs to that land — you have a cultural responsibility to look after people that come into that space. His father recognised that and Churaki executed it. I think Churaki really is a symbol of that for us. As Aboriginal people, we come from a cultural framework that is actually inclusive and brings people into it, and to actually be able to share that and express it through The Spirit of Churaki I think is definitely an invitation. He is a real person and he's an ancestor of a lot of the people in our community so when it comes to telling someone else's story, there are cultural protocols and considerations we had to make.

But yeah, overall I'm excited that people understand there's a good contribution our people have been making for a long time, and still are making to society. That's probably largely gone unrecognised over the years. Music’s always been a voice for Aboriginal people and lots of other people to be able to put forward ideas, ideals and philosophies that might be a bit counter cultural at the time. One of the things that was in the back of my mind (with this project) was how far can we go away from our traditional expression before we start to lose what that expression is, because that expression is about singing the land. We sing the story of the land, we sing the heart of the land, we dance that story. When we're looking at different contemporary expressions, how much can we add, and how much can we go away before we lose that?

TIDE
Based on the wildly successful work from 2015, Tide sees two performers risk it all to remind us all that we are nothing without each other. Two office workers carry on their duties in an office built on a sandbar. During low tide, they stand safely on sand, but as the tide rises, water submerges the desk and its contents. For 49 hours, without food or supplies, these two fearless performers put themselves at the mercy of both the tide and the compassion of the community.

EXPERI ENCES Dr Corrina Bonshek is influenced by nature to create a sense of peace and spaciousness in her music. She is the composer and creator of the interactive musical experience, Song to the Earth. What influence does nature have on your work? Nature has a lot of very pleasing patterns and I think inherently music is about patterns; rhythmic patterns, harmonic patterns. There's big structure patterns and small structure patterns on many different levels. I'm very lucky to be living here on the Gold Coast now, and my composing room in my house looks over a bush strip and there are Parrots and Cicadas all around me while I'm writing. For any creative person it helps to be surrounded by sounds and images that inspire you.
When I'm writing music, time stands still. When I listen to a piece of music that I'm really engaged with and really touched by, I'm not really thinking about anything else, just being in the moment. There's something timeless about that, like a little window into the eternal. The thing that I'm really trying to create in my music is a sense of peace and awareness of the moment. I'm interested in creating transformational experiences in my sound. I like to take people on an experience that connects them to their heart and gives them a sense of spaciousness inside themselves.

Meditation is something that I do every day and composing is something that I like to do everyday too. I think both keep me balanced and happy and contented. I don't know if that's a journey towards something; it's more about a state of being.

How bird watching opened Lawrence English’s ears to the sonic multiplicity of sound.
My father was a keen bird watcher, an interest he introduced me to. When I was young, he would take my brother and I to the old port of Brisbane, which was, in the eighties, an overgrown wilderness.

I became fascinated with one particular bird, a Reed Warbler. It was very difficult to spot as it was well camouflaged. After many failed attempts to catch a glimpse of the bird, my father said to me “Put the binoculars down, just close your eyes and listen to where the bird is.”

It was this moment that I had my first memorable sonic experience. In that instance, I recognised the implications of sound as a way of knowing the world; that there are multiple senses we have at our
disposal. What that experience demonstrated was we all can navigate the world in a variety of ways. I think what I find really interesting about sound is the idea that it doesn't function like light. Light travels in a straight line- it's a linear spectrum. Sound is fugitive, it's promiscuous, it's always coming around corners, it doesn't behave in linear ways. The other thing for me that I really find powerful about sound as a medium to work with is that it requires you to be present and attentive to it. The moment sound is appreciated by us, it’s gone, we can never listen to it that way again. So there's this constant extinction of sound I think is simultaneously both harrowing and beautiful. Big ideas are rarely presented so intimately…
It has been said over and over that the Gold Coast is a transient tourism town, but exactly who are the half-a-million locals who call the GC home? In this extraordinary performance experience from acclaimed Berlin-based theatre company Rimini Protokoll, you’re invited to meet them. Home Visit Australia sees 10 every day locals open their private residences to complete strangers, inviting an intimate audience of just 15 people to become part of a living room performance that interweaves personal stories and the big issues affecting modern day Australians.
You can host Home Visit Australia in your own home, or be a guest in a stranger’s private apartment. Each performance takes place in a different home, and thus becomes part of an ongoing conversation and growing global legacy of Home Visit from across the world. Home Visit Australia is an entertaining and performative show, Rimini Protokoll brings all the big ideas in a playful way together with the lived reality. Voting results and group pictures from all of the home visits are anonymously collected at homevisiteurope.org. The results can then be compared online as part of an ever growing archive.

Setting up shop at the Gold Coast’s iconic Burleigh Beach, is Bleach* Jnr and Super Souvenir. This is our pop-up theatre for the young and young-at-heart to let their imaginations run wild across an ocean of exploration and dreamy possibilities on the Easter weekend. Join Dr Walrus at The Whale’s Tale as he sets sail to solve the mystery around why Manilayo the Humpback Whale is feeling down. Take part in slapstick routines, crazy dances and an outrageous auction with an evil shark in the quest to help Manilayo get back to the deep blue.
Next, journey with longboarding pro Lucas Proudfoot on an epic adventure as he brings to life his most vivid childhood memories through Indigenous music and interactive performances at The Proud Foots Book Show. Travel the world with new-found friends, Pat the Wombat, Koolaz the Koala and Billy Blue the Bluetongue Lizard with the help of a magical globe and join in a musical exploration of different cultures around the world. With all kinds of workshops by Active and Healthy and drop-in activities galore, it’s a full family date out by the sea at Bleach* Jnr.

SYMPHONY AT PARADISE POINT
Taking centre stage at Paradise Point this festival is String Symphony; a large-scale interactive sculptural installation by Spare Parts Puppet Theatre; Australia’s renowned puppetry company. Created by designer and puppet maker Leon Hendroff, String Symphony is a unique, shared, multi-sensory experience for all ages. Witness a symphony of strangers join forces to bring to life a giant handwoven puppet — made from more than a kilometre of rope and 600 LED lights — and experience the magic as they become connected as one. As the sun sets, watch their creation twinkle in the night sky in an awe-inspiring display of connection, community and collaboration.

A giant illuminated puppet is suspended within a network of ropes, ready to wake from its slumber. The mysterious sound of a harp is adrift on the autumn breeze. A virtuosic violinist and a dazzling acoustic guitar trio play with abandon. The scene is set for a symphony of strings…
Between shows, enjoy a curated music program inspired by the puppet’s soaring strings. ELSKA creates an alluring and truly unique sound, combining her soulful voice, percussive harp beats, and poetic lyrics. Cadence, starring veteran guitarist James Diamond alongside Brendan Huxley and Alex Bielby, serves up a dash of flamenco, a punch of blues, an ounce of funk and a pinch of country. Emma Beau’s indie, alternative vocal capability, combined with multi-instrumental virtuosity, sets the stage alight.
