Welcome to Bleach* Bleach* The Gold Coast Festival is an annual multiarts experience like no other. Presented over 12 days across stunning beaches, natural landscapes and unconventional performance spaces, Bleach* showcases the region’s creativity.

Hon Leeanne Enoch MP

A collaboration between Bleach*, Opera Queensland and Griffith University will see HOTA transformed for an outdoor spectacular of Verdi’s Requiem and feature over 150 performers in a powerful concert under the stars.

The Queensland Government is proud to support Bleach* through Arts Queensland and Tourism and Events Queensland. Bleach* 2019 invites curiosity and participation in an inspired line-up that will engage around 500 artists and delight thousands of Festival attendees. I invite you to be part of the excitement that is Bleach* The Gold Coast Festival 2019.

Minister for Environment and the Great Barrier Reef, Minister for Science and Minister for the Arts Contemporary, innovative and quintessentially Gold Coast, welcome to Bleach* 2019; a celebration of the city’s unique creativity, culture and worldfamous natural landscapes. The Queensland Government recognises that events drive Queensland’s tourism economy and we are proud to support this event through Tourism and Events Queensland’s Destination Events Program.

Thank you to the event organisers and volunteers who have come together to deliver the Festival. If you’re visiting the region, I encourage you to make the most of the world-class tourism experiences we have on the Gold Coast. I hope you come away from this year’s Festival with some great memories, here in Queensland.

Hon Kate Jones MP

Minister for Innovation and Tourism Industry Development and Minister for the Commonwealth Games

Mayor Tom Tate City of Gold Coast

Our world renowned Bleach* went ‘next level’ during the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

I have no doubt it will activate our senses and draw us in with music, contemporary performances and installations.

Festival 2018, celebrating art and culture from across Queensland and the world, made a huge difference to the overall experience for our millionplus visitors.

As Mayor, I am proud to be a part of the evolving arts and culture scene in our city, with the Evandale Cultural Precinct continuing to expand and flourish.

When you think of the cultural offerings of the world’s great cities, such as New York, Paris and London, they include amazing institutions and quirky little ones; theatres and opera houses; contemporary music, unexpected street performances and startling public art — and they permeate those cities and make them memorable.

See you at Bleach* The Gold Coast Festival.

This year’s Bleach* program has been designed to nurture a more personal vibe among its loyal followers.

Of course, you can have a taste of what’s on offer globally on your personal screens but nothing beats “being there” — the authentic experience of being in the presence of art that genuinely comes from the place and the people, and gives you a chance to

look into their inner world, and understand a little of who they are, how they see things, why they laugh and cry. At Bleach*, we are growing a national reputation for commissioning, making and presenting work that exemplifies this authentic experience — work that can only be made here, by these people, at this time. You just have to be there...

Acknowledgement of Country Bleached Arts acknowledges the country on which we work and present Bleach* The Gold Coast Festival. We acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land — the Yugambeh and the Bundjalung people. We give our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging.

With a rich history of storytelling and artmaking in this country, we are honoured to be working with our local Elders, who are guiding us to make art and tell stories of this land. We are privileged to have your guidance on this journey.

We honour the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people whose lands we now call our home.

Welcome to 2019 Bleach* The Gold Coast Festival — one year on from the historic staging of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games. The Gold Coast is growing and evolving, as we look toward a new generation of entrepreneurs and game changers. As the City Festival, we also move with the current, creating moments to inspire and invigorate our citizens and visitors to the Gold Coast, as we ‘turn the City on’ through incredible arts experiences. The 2019 program has something for everyone, as we bring together a curated program of remarkable local, national and international artists in April. Through a celebration of new beginnings, Bleach* 2019 heralds a new era for the City. To mark this occasion, we are presenting Verdi’s Requiem by Opera Queensland with the Queensland Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra to provide the dramatic score for this moment in time, with a one-night-only performance at the stunning HOTA, Home of the Arts, Outdoor Stage.

Message from CEO and Artistic Director Photo Credit — Art-Work Agency

Louise Bezzina CEO and Artistic Director

Broadbeach’s Centenary Park and HOTA, together with the return of Bleach* at Burleigh — running for the 12 days of the Festival — will become our major landmarks in 2019. Across the coast, our music program weaves throughout the stunning waterways, with Water Songs presented in private homes and spectacular waterfront parks across the City. Take a detour to Mudgeeraba Showgrounds for an exhilarating performance experience of Throttle by home company, The Farm. Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Board and staff of Bleached Arts; our Government partners with particular thanks to Mayor Tom Tate; the incredible artists that have been part of all the Festivals; all our corporate partners, volunteers and the community of the Gold Coast for the most incredible eight years. Bleach* 2019 will be the last Festival that I will deliver and I am so proud of what it has become after such humble beginnings when I started this journey in 2011. Bleach* will live forever in my heart and I wish you all a fantastic Festival. Gold Coast, this is your Festival! Be proud and celebrate this amazing City.

Verdi’s Requiem by Opera Queensland

7

OPERA | MUSIC | TICKETED

Presented by Bleach* and Griffith University, in partnership with HOTA, Home of the Arts, by Opera Queensland, featuring the Queensland Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra Verdi’s Requiem provides the perfect score for a monumental moment in time, taking the Requiem as a symbol of new beginnings for the City and the Festival. The Festival’s centrepiece production, this music is an invitation to gather and look within ourselves as the performance invites us to reflect and have hope. When Verdi’s dear friend, poet and national hero Alessandro Manzoni died, he was too grief-stricken to attend the funeral, so he composed a requiem to honour his memory. What emerged out of his sorrow is one of the most powerful works for orchestra and voice ever written. Sometimes referred to as “an opera in ecclesiastical vestments”, Verdi’s gift for dramatic writing is on full display in this remarkable score for almost a hundred musicians and a chorus of over sixty singers. Asking the grand questions of life, it takes the audience on an intense musical journey from the depths of profound despair to ecstatic hope — a transcendent work, once experienced never forgotten. We look forward to welcoming you at this once-ina-lifetime musical concert under the stars of the Gold Coast.

DANCE | TICKETED

Presented by Bleach* and City of Gold Coast Throttle is a B-grade thriller viewed from within the safety of your own car. Lit by your headlights, heard through your car radio and seen through your windscreen, this is a live-action drive-in with a difference, brought to you by Helpmann Awardwinning Gold Coast Dance Theatre Company, The Farm. A single pane of glass allows us to feel separated from the world outside. It absorbs road rage and shields us when we sing along to the car stereo, but what happens when we’re invaded in that bubble of safety? The Farm is a movement collective of like-minded artists, whose physical performances share the fragility and strength of the human condition. From traditional theatre and dance to outdoor installations, film and immersive theatrical experiences, The Farm’s leading-edge, critically-acclaimed works aim to defy all expectations and genres — as well as gravity. With co-directors Gavin Webber and Grayson Millwood both behind the wheel, The Farm brings this tyre-squealing show to a drive-in showground-theatre near you. Scream with delight, dive under the dashboard or grip the hand of your fellow passenger and ignite some fun-fuelled passion. Throttle is like nothing you’ve ever seen before! Buckle your seatbelts. Tectonic by Dancenorth

11

DANCE | INSTALLATION | FREE

Presented by Bleach*, City of Gold Coast and Griffith University Award-winning ensemble Dancenorth performs Tectonic, a dynamic examination of shifts: shifts in land and sea, time and tide, space and thinking. Featuring 180 fit balls half-buried in the sand, Tectonic is a confluence of sculpture, movement and sound, unfolding in a dazzling site-specific performance on the beach. Tectonic was inspired by conversations had with locals on tiny Poruma Island in the Torres Strait — about erosion, rising sea levels and the very real fear of disappearing into the ocean. The 180 balls represent the 180 people living on the island, as well as 180 degrees — half a globe — an island in the sea. With each fit ball acting as a mini trampoline, the adventurous stage design provides a literal springboard off which the dancers bounce, twist and weave across the sand, with the magnificent Pacific Ocean as the backdrop. The balls provide a large-scale interactive installation for the public. Tectonic brings dance outside and into nature. While we’re watching the performance, we’re also enjoying the glorious outdoor lifestyle of the Gold Coast. A multi-layered event, Tectonic is a highly physical contemporary dance spectacle, and an interactive installation.

Pyrophon Juggerna by Hubbub Music

21

INSTALLATION | MUSIC | FREE

Presented by Bleach* and City of Gold Coast Ahoy there, me hearties! Join us after sundown and be mesmerised by the melodious magic of a blazing ship-shaped flame organ in action. Experience the phantasmagorical, pyrotechnic riot that is Pyrophone Juggernaut. Setting sail on an ancient journey of musical discovery, using tools of their own making, this unique festival performance-art centrepiece conveys the allegory of an imaginary voyage. In a fiery tuned spectacle, actual flames make pipes sing and musicians are the hardened deckhands, who are driven by their captain’s relentless beat. Captain Steve Langton grew up in India, where early impressions of street festivals, music, and architecture conspired to influence his present fascination with happy chaos, rhythmic music and elegance in form. Based on a 250-year-old experimental musical instrument, Hubbub Music’s Pyrophone Juggernaut is the largest hand-operated, multi-octave fire organ in the world. Deep growls, atavistic moans and even choral-sounding timbres combine with epic bell chords, industrial drums and acoustic thongaphone bass. Share the excitement as the furnace-driven organ, accompanied by massive, tuned freight-liner alloy wheels, sub-frequency metallophones, fire-infused truck horns and a giant gong, create hypnotic, melodic rhythms, which erupt in the night. Pyrophone Juggernaut is a dazzling sonic inferno in the park. Shiver me timbers!

Performed by psycho-siren Leah Shelton (Polytoxic, The Brides of Frank), this f**ked-up outback Contiki tour is a frothing hot mess of black comedy, anti-burlesque, live art and Hills-hoist-pole-dance. Trapped inside a sweltering pulp film mash-up, Shelton trawls through the roadkill of the Australian national identity to reveal a litany of brutality and paranoia, drenched in sweat and beer. Australian performance artist Leah Shelton’s work sits in the sweet spot between cabaret, antiburlesque and live art. She creates wild, stylised, visually striking works, soaked in cult references and wicked humour. Terror Australis is a blood-splattered, lip-synched, utterly beautiful nightmare, packed full of urban myth, cultural tropes and goon.

Landing by Tanya Lee

Presented by Bleach* and Study Gold Coast An absurd swimming carnival, a desperate endurance act and a continuous relay in which the distance between Manus Island and Australia will be collectively swum. Through the murky waters of past and present immigration policy, participants will move both towards and away from the idea of home. Landing invites you to participate or spectate as swimmers physically experience distance and take part in a policy of exile — which underpinned Australia’s colonisation and is repeated today at offshore detention sites. Swimmers wearing island-shaped hats will plunge into the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre main pool, attempting to swim a distance equivalent to the ocean stretch between Manus and Australia’s mainland. Sign on and suit up or barrack in the grandstands. Let’s do the laps or cheer on the swimmers in a collective contemplation of home and the Gold Coast’s relationship with water.

Swimmers, spectators and their supporters are invited to join the artists and collaborators for a celebratory BBQ from 6:00pm on Saturday.

DATES Friday 26 April to Saturday 27 April DURATION 24 hours VENUE Gold Coast Aquatic Centre, Marine Parade, Southport ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Your swimming session will be for a one hour period. The event takes place in a full-size Olympic-length pool that is 50 metres long and 2 metres deep. Note — this event is a 24-hour durational event and will run from 6:00pm on Friday until 6:00pm on Saturday. Bleach* would like to thank the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre for their generous support of this project. Bookings for this free event are essential via bleachfestival.com.au

VISUAL ART | MUSIC | DANCE | FREE

Presented by Bleach* and City of Gold Coast A face-off between two dancers, ringed by the audience. A stage or an arena? Dancing or sparring? Welcome to Between Tiny Cities

.

Dancers Erak Mith from Phnom Penh and Aaron Lim from Darwin use the rituals, movement styles and language of their shared hip hop culture to explore both the dramatically different worlds that surround them and the choreographic links that unite them. Choreographed by internationally-renowned Sydney hip hop dance artist Nick Power and accompanied by the beats and sound design of Jack Prest, the work blends the raw, wild energy of b*boy battles with skilful improvisation and choreography, offering a crosscultural perspective on style, culture and locality. This project is the culmination of a four-year dance exchange between Darwin’s D*City Rockers and Cambodia’s Tiny Toones youth program. The two crews have travelled, trained, battled and performed together. Between Tiny Cities រវាងទីក្ុងតូច , is a physical conversation and celebration of contemporary hip hop dance. Between performances, the action continues with a live street art battle brought to you by Scribble Slam and DJs spinning tracks.

The Soldier’s Wife Illustration — Mel Baxter

Presented by Bleach*, City of Gold Coast and Currumbin RSL Our songs are a way of sharing our stories, of documenting our histories, tragedies and hopes. Music can transverse the feelings that sometimes cannot be voiced. This is at the very heart of The Soldier’s Wife.

DURATION 70 minutes VENUE Tuesday 23 April 6:30pm with the HOTA Choir Soundlounge , Currumbin RSL Thursday 25 April 4:00pm

Some of Queensland’s most highly regarded songwriters have undertaken a truly remarkable journey – to tell the stories of the women whose partners have served in conflict. Working with hundreds of women from varying backgrounds and conflicts – including 160 soldiers’ wives from the Gold Coast branches of the Australian War Widows of Queensland – the songwriters found the women’s stories all share similar themes: of love, loss, existence and, most of all, resilience.

stripped back acoustic performance

Join us for this deeply moving celebration of survivors, especially poignant in the lead-up to ANZAC Day, as The Soldier’s Wife presents new songs from local stories on the Gold Coast for the first time. Witness their stories and honour the incredible women who are our soldiers’ wives.

THEATRE | TICKETED

Presented by Bleach*, HOTA, Home of the Arts in association with WOW Australia Ghenoa Gela — little sister, daughter, granddaughter, comic, teacher, fighter, gold medallist, air guitarist, charmer, TV star, Torres Strait mainlander and walking political statement — has made a show. You are invited into the complex political, social, colonial and cultural expectations Ghenoa navigates every day. My Urrwai, supported by a stellar team, including director Rachael Maza and dramaturg Kate Champion, is a revealing reflection on and celebration of cultural and familial inheritance, and an unflinching comment on race relations in Australia. With no direct English word that translates its meaning, Urrwai is a combination of ‘my spirit, my style, my essence’ in the Kala Lagaw Ya language, indigenous to the Torres Strait. Laughter and deep reflection go hand in hand in this unique and intimate story told through movement and words. A recipient of the renowned Keir Choreographic Award and the Deadly Funny Melbourne International Comedy Festival Award, Ghenoa’s energetic autobiographical journey is funny, moving and, ultimately, enlightening.
