EDITOR’S PIECE At the time of Bleeding Lovely issue four being published, a well known British Sunday tabloid had made itself public enemy number one in the UK. They practically upset the whole nation! They have a long history of upsetting high profile celebrities and politicians, but there was a kind of code of honour not to upset their readership, the British Public. Now they have stepped over the line, they are tapping into phone calls and dishing the dirt; an expression used when a newspaper, magazine or website publish stories that made up and full of lies. The latest news is that respectable companies are queuing up to cancel their advertising contracts with this paper. On the 6th anniversary of the July London bombing, they are getting ready to publish lies and rubbish about the heroes and members of the British public.

John Messenbird Editor

BLEEDING LOVELY

On lighter note we had some good news on the single and album front. On, Friday 15th July, Radio 1 (a British radio station) had the world premiere of ‘Collide’, Leona’s first single from Glassheart. By the time you read this ‘Collide’ will be out in the UK; due out the same week as this issue.

LEONA LEWIS FAN MAGAZINE

Bleeding Lovely magazine was born from the damage that they and their peers were doing to Leona Lewis' personal life and career. The Bunnies fought back for Leona! A year on this paper has ceased publication after 168 years. But Bleeding Lovely is still here for Leona, her Publishing Bunnies reporting the stories and news on our Princess and her Bunnies with truth and accuracy.

NEWS

GLASSHEART

‘Glassheart’ is the confirmed title of Leona’s third album. Find out more about it in this snippet from Leona’s ‘Digital Spy’ interview with Ryan Love, a fellow bunny.

BLEEDING LOVELY LEONA LEWIS FAN MAGAZINE

The album finally has a title - what can you tell us about Glassheart? "So the album is such a eclectic mix. I've really got to delve into every kind of music that I love, really try everything and make the best of everything. Because I love so many different genres, it's kind of hard to just pick one thing to do, so I just did everything!" Can you tell us about writing the track itself with Ryan Tedder? "'Glassheart' we wrote, I remember, when I was a little bit down. I went to Denver to hang out with Ryan - to see him and his family - and see if we could come up with something nice. I remember just not wanting to sing a ballad or anything that would make me more sad. I was like, 'Can you give me a song where I can just dance and jump around?', and he was like, 'What about this?' he played this beat and it was really hypnotic. So I was like, 'Yes! We have to do this'.”

Read the full interview here!

There's a lot of buzz about a track called 'Trouble' right now. Is this going to be the track to launch the album? "Yes, I think 'Trouble' will be the second single. I can't wait for everyone to hear it. I'm really excited about it. It's one that I really love." Have you finalised the album tracklist? "Not yet, but I'm almost there. I want to make a ten-track album. It's difficult to do that, but I think we're going to accomplish it. I want the strongest [tracks] and that's it - no fillers or anything. I want the strongest songs and I think we have them."

red or black?

Leona performed ‘Collide’ on ‘Red Or Black?’, a gameshow of chance where contestants choose between red or black to progress. During the performance, Leona performed with 24 dancers, all of whom had a briefcase with either a red or black lining inside. Afterwards Leona chose one of her dancers to open a case and reveal what colour was inside; red or black. Leona picked red, and those contestants who had picked red, went through to the next round!

leona in sardinia

On 30th July, Leona performed at a private event at Cala Di Volpe in Sardinia. She performed ‘Collide’ live for the first time, as well as 9 other songs!

G-A-Y

After the performance on ‘Red Or Black?’, Leona performed at G-A-Y, a nightclub in London. She performed ‘Collide’, ‘Bleeding Love’ and ‘Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)’ as well as premiering the title track from upcoming album ‘Glassheart’.

(multi) platinum hit

“A three time Grammy award nominated, and multiplatinum selling, singer-songwriter who defines modern music” was how Leona was introduced on ‘Platinum Hit’, a competition in which 12 singersongwriters compete through innovative songwriting challenges that test their creativity, patience and drive. The finalists were Sonyae Elise, Jes Hudak and Scotty Granger. Sonyae was declared the winner. Her song in the finale was called My Religion. Leona said she “got goosebumps” as she was listening.

5 years on

It has been five years since Leona’s first audition was broadcast on ‘The X Factor’ on 30th August 2006. Since then, she has broken countless records, performed in front of billions of people, sold millions of records worldwide, campaigned in support of several charities and even designed her own red carpet outfits. She has captivated millions of people and the Bleeding Lovely magazine team are proud of Leona and everything she has achieved. Here’s to the next 5 years!

From Thursday 4th August, a series of riots swept across the UK. The trouble started in Tottenham, and by the following Monday the riots had spread to Hackney, Leona’s home town. Leona expressed her displeasure via Twitter, urging people to stop the violence.

The ‘House of Reeves’ is resuming business at their other store in Croydon. The Bleeding Lovely team would like to wish them and their staff the best of luck with their future success.

BLEEDING LOVELY

The images of a furniture shop, ‘House of Reeves’, burning down were broadcast across the world. The business was established in 1867; it survived 2 World Wars but one of their shops was wiped out in 25 minutes during the riots. We hope all Bunnies who live in the affected areas, will do all they can to help their communities recover, and do Leona proud.

The Guid to Collide

DANIEL GRANDTIS’ REVIEW

BLEEDING LOVELY LEONA LEWIS FAN MAGAZINE

Three ingredients are essential to a massive song: a catchy melody, a unique music style and of course explosive vocals. There's only one song I can think of at the moment that meets these requirements. I guess you know which hit we are talking about.

6

Leona decided to head in another direction with her third album and reveal a new side of her shining personality. Our power belter intended to follow a music style which no one is doing right now (according to some interviews of hers). It's obvious: Leona has easily achieved this goal. Collide takes you back to the glorious 80s/90s without losing its modern touch. Retro also plays a decisive role when it comes to the visuals of this era. Leona looks stunning while posing in front of a tiled wall. A ray of light lightens up her beautiful face as wind blows through her full hair. Even though Leona has gone down a more uptempo route this time, she isn't directly following any trends and therefore showing artistic independence. You can only hear a tiny electro pop influence (which is very popular right now). It's more of a dance pop anthem with a strong piano riff. Miss Lewis has teamed up with upcoming hit-DJ Avicii and didn't rely on used up producers such as

WS AND REVIEWS! As you hopefully already know, Collide is Leona’s new single from her third album, Glassheart.

It is a dance-pop anthem based on a staccato piano riff. Collide has received rave reviews from the press. Select reviews have claimed that Collide is as big as Bleeding Love. It premiered on Radio 1 on 15th July at 4:25pm on Scott Mills’ show; the Afrojack remix premiered the same day on Annie Mac’s show. However, after Collide premiered, there was a some controversy surrounding the song. There were claims that the melody had been stolen from a DJ called Avicii. The case was taken to court but adjourned till the following Tuesday. The case was settled out of court; although most details are unknown, we know that it was agreed on Collide being a collaboration between the two artists.

CHLOE LEADBEATER’S REVIEW

The music video was shot on 27th July and premiered on 26th August. It already has over 3 million views on VEVO. The video is described as “a beautiful cinematic piece that” showcases “the natural beauty of ” Leona. The majority of the video features Leona on a beach, as well as having fun, surrounded by friends. It also includes several shots of the sky, as well as waves crashing into people. If you haven’t seen it yet, it is a must-see. A really stunning video!

JOHN MESSENBIRD’S REVIEW If you are expecting the standard Leona Lewis power ballad or rock cover you are going to be in for a surprise/ shock. Collide opens with a beat driven electronic dance floor sound and first Leona vocals tend to sound as if they’re processed and synthesised too much. But as the song gets going, her natural voice kicks in and you see that our Leona is back on form. This is definitely a departure from the usual Leona Lewis style. Bunnies will either love it or hate it, because it’s a bit like Marmite. Upon hearing Leona's vocal, all fans will love that part of the tune. This will win Leona credibility in the clubs and will bring new Bunnies hopping to the dance floor.

David Guetta. Collide basically consists of pure power belting. Her vocals perfectly fit the lyrics of the songs. She belts out "Crash into me! At full speed!" The first chorus is almost acapella, imagine what the live performances will sound like. In addition her lower register sounds very strong and is on par with her amazing high register. It's very difficult to win over new fans and fulfill the hardcore fans' wishes at the same time. No doubt that Leona has managed to do this with Collide. Some comments on YouTube go like this "I never listened to her music and cared about her but I just love Collide. Amazing". Let's make Collide a huge success by letting as many people as possible know about it!

The controversy doesn’t seem to have had an effect on the song’s performance. Collide is currently #6 on America’s Billboard Dance/Club Chart and looks set to chart in the top 5 in both the UK and Ireland this week. The song has even been played in Ibiza, the home of dance music. It has been playlisted on many radio stations including Radio 1 and Capital in the UK.

BUILDING A

Part 2

LEONA COLLECTION I know a lot of fans who have always wanted to start a Leona collection, whether basic or elaborate, but just don’t know where to begin. The key is to start out small and build up your collection; everyone has to start somewhere, right? I also know a lot of fans who already have pretty extensive and unique collections. I think I’ve seen it all; from signed socks to rare Japanese promotional CDs, and even stolen ticket stubs (you know who you are)!

There really are some truly insane dedicated fans out there. Not to blow my own trumpet, but I like to think that I have a fairly decent collection myself! This series of articles will explore all of the rare and wonderful items that will be right at home in your Leona collection. This second part will concentrate on promotional CDs released around the world, including the UK and Japan.

I have acquired all of my UK promo CDs from sellers on eBay. One thing I can say, is that you should wait until a couple of months after release before purchasing a promo CD, as the price will drop considerably. I’ve learnt from my mistakes; I paid around £20 for my Happy promo CD immediately after it was released, and now, 2 years on, they are

There are some great Japanese promotional CDs floating about, and if you can find them, they are even more rare than most. There is one item from the Spirit era which is very scarce. Pictured above, it is a custom fold-out digipak with built in biography booklet, and includes a Leona presentation movie and a Spirit promotional CD. It really is a stunning item and I’ve seen nothing else like it from Leona’s record labels; it’s one of my favourite items in my collection! Look out for part 3 in the next issue of Bleeding Lovely for more collection building tips!

The History Of

Female Vocalists The jazz era brought the first real stars of recorded music, as we would recognise as in the modern concept of ‘singing stars’. They had famous singers before, in the age of ‘Music Hall/Vaudeville Variety Theatre’ and even predating that with opera divas, as far back as the late 16th Century. But for the purpose of this series of articles, we will concentrate on female vocal stars who made it in the age of sound recording, 1900 to the present.

BILLIE HOLIDAY The first real female star was Eleanora Fagan, better known to the world as Billie Holiday; called ‘Lady Day’ by her close friend and top jazz saxophonist, Lester Young. Billie had a very distinct voice that could never be mistaken for anyone else. Her musical career started when she was just 17, at a night club called ‘Covans’ on West 132nd Street in New York. Her career spanned 27 years until her death in July 1959. Very rare in a time when America was very racially divided, she successfully worked with the top white orchestras. Billie Holiday was one of the first ‘divas’ in the age of sound recording.

Ella Fitzgerald

10

Ella (Jane) Fitzgerald was born on the 25th April, 1917 in Newport News, Virginia. She was known as the ‘First Lady of Song’ and had a recording career that spanned 59 years. Like many of her contemporaries, she was born into a deprived neighbourhood and had a bad family life of abuse. At first, she wanted to be a dancer but fell in love with the vocal sound of Connie Boswell; this lead her towards singing and a career in jazz music. Her first performance was at the Apollo Theater in New York on 21st November 1934. Ella sang many songs from the ‘Great American Song Book’. This is a list of many of the Jazz standards from the United States, from the early to mid twentieth century. In her lifetime, Ella won many awards (notably 13 Grammys), was presented with the ‘National Medal of Arts’ by Ronald Reagan and presented with the ‘Presidential Medal of Freedom’ by George H. W. Bush. Ella Fitzgerald died at the age of 79 years old in Beverly Hills, California in 1996.

NINA SIMONE

Nina Simone, or Eunice Kathleen Waymon, was a jazz, gospel and pop singer active from the early 1950s to the 1980s. Born in South Carolina on 21st February 1933, she first came to music as a classical pianist playing the music of Johanne Sabastian Bach. She later crossed over to jazz, gospel and pop. After 20 years in performing music she got more involved in the Civil Rights Movement.

Brenda Lee, or Brenda Mae Tarpley, was born on 11th December 1944 and is still alive and recording today. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, her recording career peaked between 1955 and 1963. Her musical styles range from pop, rockabilly and country. Her biggest international hit was in 1958 with ‘Rocking Around The Christmas Tree’ (later covered by British comedian Mel Smith, and British pop star Kim Wilde in the 1980s). 1960 saw ‘I’m Sorry’ chart internationally. By 1963, the music industry had moved on to the new sound of Beatlemania from Liverpool, UK and the surf sound from California. The birth of the sixties sound was in the making. Brenda Lee is still in the American entertainment industry. In 2002 she was voted into the ‘Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’ and also received a ‘Jo Meador-Walker Lifetime Achievement’. She was also inducted in to the ‘Country Music Hall of Fame’ and the ‘Rockabilly Hall of Fame’. In February 2009, she won a Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award for ‘Rocking Around the Christmas Tree’. Over 50 years after its release, it is still a holiday favourite in America; heard on Christmas movie soundtracks and making appearances on British television shows regularly. In her hayday, she was known as ‘Little Miss Dynamite’, not to be confused with Miss Dynamite, a British singer from the early 21st century (more on her later).

LEONA LEWIS FAN MAGAZINE

Julie London (Gayle Peck) was born on 26th September 1926. She was a jazz and ballad singer who reached her musical peak in the 1950s. She sang a song called ‘Cry Me A River’. Even though it has the same title as the Justin Timberlake song which Leona sang on The Labyrinth Tour, it is a completely different song. She later went into acting in films and television. Her acting career went on for 35 years, ending with her playing the role of Dixie McCall on the 1970s US TV show Emergency! She died on 18th October 2000 in Encino, California, aged 74.
