MESSAGES The day this issue hits Issuu.com is the day that Bunnies Worldwide shall rejoice, as today is the fifth anniversary of Leona Louise Lewis winning the X-Factor 2006. In this time she had grown from a shy wallflower bud awaiting to bloom. A quite 21 year dreamer from Hackney in London, an ordinary inner-city British suburban area that was going to witness a Hollywood/Disney type fantasy story. As the bud opened to reveal a glowing Princess. At 26 years of age Leona has matured in to the most sophisticated lady in pop music. Half a decade later she spellbounds Bunnies (Her fans) with a journey of magical excitement, we celebrate her achievements and suffer her hardships, but the it the job of a true Bunny, to be behind her in everything she does.

Five years ago today Leona won the X-Factor.... (That’s if you are reading this on the day of publication, the 16th December 2011.) …. she nail it with her rendition of ‘A Moment Like This’, a song written for the winner of the 2002 American Idol, which Kelly Clarkson won. Leona’s version was reported to of out sold the rest of the UK Top 40 put together & had at the time became the fastest selling download track of all time. A beautiful (In looks and personality) girl had won the hearts of the Great British public. The following year saw her conquer the World with Bleeding Love then the album Spirit. After performing live around the Globe and winning admirers in country after country on to the Beijing Olympic Games then back home to the Hackney Empire (See article about this fantastic venue in this issue) & finally on to the Labyrinth Tour, on stage across the UK & Ireland and on DVD/Blu-ray in living rooms across five continents. To me this DVD stands out of my more than any of the best Hollywood 3D Blockbusters.

John Messenbird Editor

Well, it’s that special time of the year. No, not Christmas. It is 5 years since Leona won X Factor. It has flown by really quickly. In those 5 years, we have seen Leona grow and grow and her voice has continued to be the soundtrack to many of our lives. She has done many huge things, like performing at the Beijing 2008 Olympics Closing Ceremony and singing the theme song for the highest grossing film of all time Avatar, and done lots of work for charity. She has also done many things for her bunnies, by tweeting them, following them, doing a tour, doing a UStream or simply meeting them. On behalf of all the Bleeding Lovely Magazine team, thank you Leona for everything you have done. Keep on using that phenomenal voice. Lots of bunny love and hugs from the founder of Bleeding Lovely Magazine!

5 YEARS OF LEONA 2006 was a normal year. That was until a certain 21-year old auditioned for X Factor. That 21 year old is Leona. She sailed through the live shows. Every week she gave her best and stunned with her vocals. She even managed to sing really well when she had laryngitis on the show. Then it was the 16th December 2006. Leona and the other finalist Ray Quinn were on stage, waiting for the result. Kate Thornton said “The winner of X Factor 2006 is” It seemed like a long wait then came the result. “Leona!”. Leona instantly broke down in tears and was lifted high by her fellow finalist Ray. She was speechless and couldn’t believe what had happened. From then on, she soared to superstardom, breaking many records along the way. She has performed at many big events. Here’s to the next 5 years!

THE LEONA FACTOR

Leona has been busy performing on not one but two X Factors. She performed Run on X Factor Germany and Run is still in the German chart after about 92 weeks. Leona performed her new single Hurt from her new EP, Hurt: The EP, on UK Factor and got a standing ovation from all 10,000 people in the arena and the four judges. She stole the show, as usual.

Bunnies take over Twitter

After the stunning X Factor UK performance, Leona trended in the UK and worldwide. She had 5 out of 10 trending topics related to her. Bunnies well and truly took over Twitter that night.

Queen Leona

Leona performed at the Royal Variety Performance this month. She last performed on this show in 2008. Leona sang Hurt, from the new EP out now on iTunes!

Glassheart delayed

Glassheart will now be released next year, rather than this November. Due to Leona being really inspired and wanting to record more songs. It will be well worth the wait.

Leona is Hurt

Leona has released her amazing new EP called Hurt:The EP. She did this as a gift to fans to say “Thanks for being patient and waiting for Glassheart.” More details can be found in the review.

BLEEDING LOVELY

Leona has released her amazing new EP called Hurt:The EP. She did this as a gift to fans to say “Thanks for being patient and waiting for Glassheart.” It contains three songs: Hurt (Nine Inch Nails) , Colorblind (Counting Crows) and Iris (Goo Goo Dolls). Hurt has a dark piano riff running through it and later has drums and guitars added to it. Leona’s vocals are haunting and powerful. This song truly shows off Leona’s vocals. Iris is a slower version of the normal song but it really works because mixed with Leona’s vocal, this song really tugs at your heartstrings. Within a few seconds of listening to this song, I was in tears. Colorblind is also an absolutely stunning song, and overall, these are Leona’s best covers yet and give you a taste of what’s to come with Glassheart.

THE JOURNEY OF

BLEEDING LOVELY LEONA LEWIS FAN MAGAZINE

L

eona Lewis' musical journey started at a very early age, by the age of 13 she was already singing to a packed theatre. You have probably seen the YouTube video of Leona singing Celine Dion's 'And My Heart Goes On' at the Hackney Empire. Leona had entered many singing contests from an early age including talents and big national karaoke contests. She had already gained experience working in recording studio. As she would spend all the money she earn as a waitress in a Pizza Hut restaurant on studio time and vocal coaching. During her school years Leona attended the Brit School in Selhurst in Croydon, London. The Brit School's class registers read like a who's who of modern British Pop music, She would commute for three hours there and three hours back each day. Her dream was to sing for the people who would later become her Bunnies. By 2006 the dream was like it was coming to the end of road and Leona was destined for an ordinary 9 to 5 job. Then her boyfriend at the time had entered her into the UK talent show the X-Factor. Leona just sailed through the auditions blowing the pretenders and karaoke wannabes to oblivion. Simon Cowell had taken Leona under his wings as her mentor. Simon who has became known for telling the truth with contestants talent or lack of it, has made him unpopular with the press in the UK and US, he just tells the truth! If someone rubbish at singing he says so, but if they are good he also says so. With Leona he knew she was very special, and he could only have admiration for her, he had nothing but praise for Leona. Even the other judges Louis Walsh & Sharon Osborne, rival mentors had not a bad word to say about Leona in their praises. The next stage was to convince the Great British public, she did! And they took her to their hearts and fell in love with this beautiful young woman from Hackney. The rest of the World was to follow and the Bunnyhood was to be born, more on that later. On the 16th December 2006, the final of that year's X-Factor Andi Peters (British TV Presenter/Host) was at the CD pressing plant in the North of England as the results were being totalled up. Kate Thornton (The Show's compare), I then just remember Kate shouting 'L-E-O-N-A !!!', fireworks exploding and Leona's name flashing up on an electronic display behind the stage. Andi Peters did the countdown and the press burst into life and 30 seconds later the first copy of A Moment Like This sung by Leona Lewis appeared on CD and the start of the career of the first woman every to win the contest. The song out sold the rest of the UK Top 40 put together. Leona had became an instant Star, in demand on every entertainment TV going in the UK. Leona only 21 years old at the time, still couldn't believe it neither could I. I was truly in love with this girl. The following year it went quite, till October then 'Bleeding Love' was released. This was to be the big one that

would shoot her to International Fame, country after country around the World Bleeding Love was to conquare the Number One spot. On the 28th March 2008 the unthinkable was to happen, when for 21 years no British female vocalist had achieved a Number One in the US and no British act in the 21st Century at that stage. Mariah Carey was ready to become America’s Number One and Leona then leap over her and pushed her into the number two position. Leona Lewis was Number One in the World’s largest music market! I was near enough running on the ceiling in disbelief. Spirit was released and it was received with critical acclaim, everyone loved Leona. Around 2009 the time of Echo the media had latched on to Lady GaGa & Rhianna and they fell out of love with our Leona Lewis but this just made her loyal fans grow fonder of her. This was sadly the the time of the book signing incident. When happy Bunnies formed an orderly queue outside the Waterstone’s book store in central London. I had waited for six hours to see our Leona, it was like a party chatting to fellow Bunnies about their Leona Experiences. Then 45 minutes after I got to see her and talk to her, a so called fan walked up to her and attacked her. Leona got punched in the head by some weird idiot. For me this had ruined a perfect day, I felt so sorry for all those Bunnies who had queue for hours and never got to see the beautiful Leona Lewis.

BLEEDING LOVELY

Things started to look up for our Music Bunny, a new boyfriend called Dennis Jauch , one of her Labyrinth Tour dancers. Involvement with the Hopefield Animal Sanctary in Brentwood, Essex. Leona had always had a love of animals as they give her so much in life. A new E.P. Called ‘Hurt’ and an album, ‘Glass Heart’ to follow next year plus the Hackney Big Weekend festival for the Olympics, things are now starting to go Leona’s way and I plus many others are truly Happy Bunnies. Here’s to the next five years of Leona Lewis!

2011: To a young woman who creates DREAMS !

LEONA LEWIS FAN MAGAZINE

The Labyrinth Tour was just months away, and some of the mainstream media took it upon themselves to stab Leona in the back, they had instantly made themselves an enemy of every one of Leona’s loyal Bunnies. During the time of the Tour Leona’s long term boyfriend had call it a day with their relationship, the tabloid press went in for the kill on this and then criticised the Tour itself. These hacks were reporting that Leona’s show was stiff and lacking any life. On their Blackberries & iPads they wrote a lot of rubbish that only convinced the real Bunny that they were making it all up whilst down the pub instead of being at the O2, or any of the other fine venues that she had taken the show to. As I file this report, it was pure Bunny Heaven, professional and an amazing spectacle of ‘Sound & Vision’. I know because I was there at the O2 on the 14th June plus the thousands of Bunnies who were having the night of their lives.

HOPEFIELD

W

BLEEDING LOVELY LEONA LEWIS FAN MAGAZINE

hat do you think of when someone says animals? Cute fluffy rabbits, dogs, cats and much more. You think of people lovingly taking care of them, becoming part of the family. But there is a negative side to this. Some people abandon their pets or whatever animal they have. This could be because they can’t afford it or have moved house. The animals are left to starve and some eventually die.

8

But there is a place that rescues these animals and brings them back to full health. Hopefield Animal Sanctuary is an animal sanctuary that cares for many different animals including horses, donkeys, goats, sheep, pigs, chickens, geese, ducks, cats and many small animals. The sanctuary is based in Brentwood, Essex. However, this sanctuary is threatened with closure because of lack of funds for the winter season. In the winter season, animals need more food and the buildings need to be strong so the animals can keep in the warm. Recently they have had support from the X Factor 2006 winner Leona Lewis, who is now a patron for Hopefield. She first visited Hopefield because her manager, Nicola Carson, who is from Essex, had heard of it. Leona is an avid animal lover . She says “My mis-

sion at Hopefield is to make sure these animals can continue to live here, that they can live comfortably and safely, that we can build Hopefield into a sanctuary that will educate people on animal welfare and continue to save more animals in need. The immediate mission is to raise £100,000 by Christmas. A big ask but one we can achieve by each just doing whatever we can for these animals that deserve some love!” On Sunday October 9, there was a sponsored walk which Leona, her manager Nicola and many other people attended. They managed to raise £14,000. It’s a great amount but Hopefield still needs your help. You could organize fundraising events, do a sponsored run, walk or something else. You can donate online at www.hopefield.org.uk Not only do they need money, they also need materials such as roofing, fencing, feed, hay, lighting, timber, business supplies - anything that you or anybody you know could supply would be well received. Their address is Hopefield Animal Sanctuary, Sawyers Hall Lane, Brentwood, Essex, CM15 9BY For further information regarding fundraising, sponsorship or events please contact Lianne Angliss at lianne@ hopefield.org.uk or Nicola Carson at nicola@hopefield. org.uk. Please help Hopefield to help unwanted and mistreated animals lead a better life.

MY SONG WISHLIST

N

ot only has Leona established herself as a multi-millionaire recording artist, she is also commonly known for delivering exceptional live vocals. Our shining star has developed new skills over the last few years which result in explosive on-stage performances. Leona has gained much confidence and emerged from the best vocalist To the best singer with amazing Worldclass talent, a term which is true for Leona because she both shines in and outside the studio.

Overall I prefer Leona hearing live because she is the only one who hits my heart directly. You can't resist being taken into another world, when you get to hear every single nuance of her voice. Her breath, the amazing shifts between softness and power and of course the emotional energy. there is a bunch of songs I would like to hear live from Leona someday. “Crying is beautiful”, “ How everything you are” & “Stay”: These three song have one thing in common. It's pure and raw singing just accompanied by pianos and strings.

BLEEDING LOVELY LEONA LEWIS FAN MAGAZINE

What fascinates me is Leona's pure emotion she puts into them and the natural build-up. I can also imagine her doing an even more laid-back acoustic version of these songs. This trio also enjoys great popluartity among Leona's fan-community (her Bunnies). Stay is the most requested one though. The chance of hearing these songs live is very slim, since they didn't get an official release. Echo and Spirit offer some real diamonds which include “My Hands”, “You don't care”, “Yesterday” and “Here I am”. Leona is the master of making every song her own.

10

Her ability to even take on huge hits and make

them sound as good as the original or often even better is unique. The reason for it is simple. Leona uses her voice (and her range) as an instrument in order to convey emotions. I have never heard Leona over sing a song, she is the only vocalist for me who doesn't do that. I am into dramatic ballads (just like Leona herself). “The Power of Love” (Frankie), “All Out Of Love”, “My Heart Will Go On”, “Somewhere Out There”, “The Rose”, “Stay” (by Hurts), “Hard To Say I Am Sorry”, “In The Arms Of An Angel”. I could spend days but these came to my mind immediately. Everytime I listen to these songs, Leona comes to my mind with her beautiful vocal tone. Recording songs from the XFactor days would also make us fans happy. This would showcase how much Leona has improved since then. I keep watching her performances from 2006. I already know them by heart but never get bored of them. Christmas is just a few days ahead. There is nothing better than listening to Leona's Christmas medley including “All I Want For Christmas Is You” & “Oh Holy Night” to get you in the Christmas mood. “Silent Night” or “Ave Maria” would be breath-taking for sure. We can often see Leona's opera influences get through but we actually didn't hear her sing opera yet. “Nessun Dorma” or “Time To Say Goodbye” are my personal choices. What about you?

by Daniel Grandits

ou may ask 'What is this all about, Leona and all the Bunnies?' The answer to this is late one night, earlier this year Leona was putting Melrose to bed - her pet rabbit she saved from being a man's dinner, she paid for him to be fed and took the rabbit off his hands and gave her a loving home - Leona was saying good night to Melrose whilst chatting to fans on Twitter (I was there on the night!) then she said 'I'm tucking my bunnies in for the night, sweet dreams' to her fans.

Whilst watching the movie 'Watership Down' and now reading the book, I can see where Leona is coming from. After talking to fellow fans, oh that should be

And just think, any of you Bunnies born in 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987 or 1999. You are a Bunny in more than one way, these are the years of the Rabbit in the Chinese Zodiac. 2011 is also a Rabbit Year, the year this all started. If you want to read more about Bunnies, I will be doing an article about the animals themselves and Watership Down for the April 2012 Issue, Easter Bunnies anyone!

BLEEDING LOVELY

Then the name Bunnies stuck, we all started calling and referring to each other as Bunnies. Other singers give nick names to their fans, Pixie Lott calls her fans 'Crazy Cats', Lady GaGa's 'Little Monsters' and Michael Jackson's are 'Jacksonians'. This is nice as it makes the Artist and fans relationship more personal. This all started at a party Leona attended on New Year's Eve last year in Miami. She wore a pair of rabbit ears.

Bunnies from the Leona Lewis Forum, Facebook and Twitter Groups, they remind me of the characters out of Watership Down. Intelligence, creativity and having great problems solving abilities and most important loyalty to each other. So if you are ever in a field or meadow and you catch sight of a rabbit in the distance thumping its back legs on the ground - just think it could be like you - A Leona Lewis fan tapping its feet to Collide.

The History Of

Female Vocalists Part 2

The jazz era brought the first real stars of recorded music, as we would recognise as in the modern concept of ‘singing stars’. They had famous singers before, in the age of ‘Music Hall/Vaudeville Variety Theatre’ and even predating that with opera divas, as far back as the late 16th Century. But for the purpose of this series of articles, we will concentrate on female vocal stars who made it in the age of sound recording, 1900 to the present.

DORIS DAY

BLEEDING LOVELY LEONA LEWIS FAN MAGAZINE

Doris Mary Ann Von Kappelhoff was the birth name of Doris Day. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio on 3rd April (Same Birthday as Leona Lewis, just different year.) 1924. She had mainly performed jazz music at first in the 1940’s but then her career took her in to acting in the movies by the early 1960’s she returned in singing but doing the current style of ballads that had its origins in the fifties. Her last major release was “Move Over Darling” re-recorded by British TV Star/Singer Tracey Ullman 20 years later in 1983.

12

She had won many awards and not just entertainment industry ones but awards from Presidents for her services to her country (United States) for things as diverse her role as Entertainer to Animal Welfare Campaigner. Doris is in semi-retirement and owns an animal sanctuary in California. The big surprise came when a new album she release charted in the UK in September this year, due to be released in December in the U.S.

Helen Shapiro Hales from Clapton in the London Borough of Hackney (Yes Leona Lewis country!). Born in 1946 her grandparents were of Russian/Jewish origin. Even though her family were to poor to afford a record player, she had shown an interest in music from an early age. She was in the same school band as Mark Field, he later found fame in the Seventies in the T. Rex under the name Marc Bolan. Helen’s career only lasted a couple of years between 1961 and 1962. Her style was truly of its day, the end of the fifties era. By 1963 music had gone through a revolution. The Beatles had given Britain a sound that it could call its own, up to then British music sounded American, taking all its inspiration and styles from the US. Helen Shapiro carried on performing in the clubs right until 2009. As well as doing various acting roles on TV and in films. Her biggest hits are ‘Don‘t Treat Me Like A Child‘, ‘You Don‘t Know‘ & ‘Walking Back To Happiness’. Despite have her first hit at 15 years old she sound more mature due having a warm deep voice, a bit like the modern singer Adele.

Billie Davis Born in Woking, Surrey, England as Carol Hedges on 22nd December 1945. She got her stage name from a combination of the names of two American entertainers, Billie Holiday (See last Issue of Bleeding Lovely, The History of Female Vocalists - Part 1) and all round Mr Nice Guy Sammy Davis Jr. Davis was an Engineering Secretary when she won a talent contest back in 1962, her first hit was with Mike Sarne (Michael Scheuer). But her big hit was Tell Him in 1963 followed by He’s The One. Billie had became a style icon of her day sporting the trade mark 1960’s fashions including the Bob hairstyle, Mini skirts/dresses and the knee length boots that were made famous by Honor Blackman in The Avengers. In the late 60’s she had a hit with P.P. Arnold’s Song Was born in Kentucky but raised in Cincinnati, Angel Of The Morning, she continued to record into the Ohio. Her musical journey started around 1967 singing 80’s and is very popular in Spanish speaking countries. with Johnny Thunder and she had a few minor hits as a solo artist in her native country , the United Stated. In 1973 Ruby recorded the song ‘I Will’, she was getting noticed in her home country. After re-recording this song four years later it unexpectedly went to number 4 in the UK Charts making her an International artist a decade after she started out. A couple of more British hits followed like ‘Come To Me’, ‘I Won’t Mention It’ in 1978 and ‘Baby Lay Down’ in 1979. 1980’s came and Ruby Winters disappeared off the radar, but not without leaving some memorable songs from my teen years and you can still hear her YouTube.

SPOTLIGHT ON HACKNEY EMPIRE

F

BLEEDING LOVELY LEONA LEWIS FAN MAGAZINE

or a while I had wanted to go & see in side the Hackney Empire, then the opportunity presented it's self. On Saturday 17th September the theatre opened its doors to the public to have a look around as apart of London's Open House Weekend, this is where some of the finest buildings open up and allow any member of the public to inspect their architecture on guided tours for free. Even though the event is mainly for architecture fans I thought I would still go along because the building's connections with a certain young lady that I'm very fond of. Leona Lewis had done her first ever public performance on that very stage, singing the Celine Dion ballad 'My Heart Will Go On' from James Camaron's Titanic, a movie director who would later borrow Leona's vocal talents for the Avatar.

14

Leona's connections didn't end there however, you can see the stage & auditorium in the opening shots of the 'A Moment Like This' video, you Leona looking stunning in a long black dress with those gorgeous golden corkscrew locks of blonde hair and singing into the vintage microphone with chandeliers before it cuts into her X-Factors auditions. And talking about the X-Factor, it seemed like the whole of Hackney’s population was in the building. When Myleene Klass was presenting the piece for the show on local fans support. Upon arriving at the Hackney Empire, I waited in a very modern cafe area where our guide met us then took us outside to see a huge sign saying ‘Hackney Empire’ added in September 2005. Even though the originally built in 1901 by Frank Matcham, in what is known as the ‘Edwardian Era’ here in the United Kingdom, so called because it was the time of the reign of King Edward the Seventh (1901 - 1910). Despite the two parts of the building being constructed over a century apart they don’t conflict with each other, they just look like two separate buildings that compliment each other. Our guide said it could be seen from the air as your approach London City Airport, he joked that he was even reminded of work before he even had a chance to get off the plane. We were escorted to the original box office where

the posh (rich) people would enter, they had a Commoners (poor people’s) Entrance at the side of the building for cheap seats. Inside the hall there was scrolls painted on the walls with the names of famous classical composers. The Baroque style deco was discovered at a later renovation, after it had been plastered and painted over in the 1960's. We then told to ascend the impressive staircase and entered into the auditorium where there was a show being rehearsed for a performance later that afternoon. This was for a tribute show for a young man stabbed to death on the streets of Hackney, the performance was to bring the community together and to show the World that like everywhere else Hackney is a place with a majority of its people are good people, and from what we heard very talented as well. This rehearsal proved to be a real treat as this showed us that the theatre is still the centre of a lively community. It is very much a place for young people, the Hackney Empire is just as much a part of areas life in the 21st Century as it was in Frank Matcham's time. Next up was we was taken up in the lift (elevator) five floors to the ‘Gods’, in the Empire you can see where this name comes from because it is so high up, then upon looking up you are greeted with what looks like a dome painted in really dark mid-night blue with stars shimmering in it. This believe it or not is part of theatre’s air conditioning system. As you know from your old school science classes that hot air rises up, and this is exactly how it worked cooler air would enter from the lower levels of the auditorium and rise up then escape through the starry sky light. Towards the end of the tour we were taken outside and around the back to see the stage door and the original stage door where on view is the step in a hole in the modern wall. There is also a Hackney Empire 2, a new building where they do bang up to date theatre with the latest 21st Century digital media and drama workshops for young adults & children. A Brief History The Hackney Empire was built for Music Hall Va-
