We offer a warm welcome to all those who are joining us for the first time at the South Point Equestrian Arena and are happy to see all returning riders and fans here at The Las Vegas National CSI4*-W. This unique location offers the wonder and intensity of show jumping, all under the same roof as a hotel, spa, and much more. The Blenheim EquiSports team is proud to be one of 14 events that comprise the Longines FEI Jumping World Cup™ North American League (NAL). The NAL has injected an unmistakable element of excitement into North American competition, and that enthusiasm played a role in our decision to once again make the show a CSI4*-W, as well as increase the prize money for the feature event, the $135,000 Longines FEI Jumping World Cup™ Las Vegas. The Longines FEI World Cup™ is a global series with 110 qualifying events in 14 leagues across the world. At the end of the qualifying process, 14 athletes from the NAL (Canada, the United States, and Mexico), will have earned a place among the world’s best, to compete in Göteborg, Sweden for one of the most coveted trophies in the sport of show jumping. The 2017 Longines FEI World Cup™ Final in Paris, France was a tremendous event, with American Beezie Madden taking home the title and trophy for the second time in her career. Those competing on Saturday in the Longines FEI Jumping World Cup™ Las Vegas will be earning valuable qualifying points toward this goal. Luxury watchmaker Longines, our prestigious Title Sponsor and Top Partner of the FEI, is the Official Timekeeper and Watch for the North American League, and provides a dedicated time-keeping team and data handling service for each of the fourteen legs. As a major supporter of the sport of Show Jumping worldwide, this invaluable timekeeping service is just a part of their contribution to elevating our sport. As always, we are thankful to our loyal partners, sponsors and competitors. We truly appreciate and would like to extend our gratitude to the owners, volunteers, and grooms, as well as the officials, the suppliers, the media, the staff working behind the scenes, the corporations, the charities, and all who make these events successful. A HORSE WILL TAKE ME THERE

“Whatever good things await me along the path of my life, a horse will take me there.” — Mary Frances Looke

T

wenty-four-year-old “Francie” Looke has learned some simple truths early in life - make good choices, keep the path clear of debris and ride a horse to keep you grounded. A recovering addict, Looke has experienced the highest ‘highs’ and the lowest ‘lows’. She shares her story without hesitation, not only to reinforce her own recovery but to encourage others to do the same. Like many other young riders who compete in the ‘under 25’ classes, Looke is an emerging equestrian pursuing her passion, moving up the ladder to successfully compete in the 1.50m grand prix classes and beyond.

Requiring commitment, concentration and perseverance, Looke states the cycle as train, improve, compete and repeat. However, to achieve success in that seemingly simple cycle calls for learning from the ups and the downs and to persevere. She credits the horses for sticking by her, being her connection to earth and inspiring her to stay on track, in and out of the saddle. The journey to becoming an accomplished rider is full of ups and downs, humbling yet rewarding. Although each rider has their own path, that intense aforementioned focus required to achieve goals in partnership with these magnificent animals, and to win, is what drives these

athletes. With a deep appreciation of both the horse and the rider, Looke and her family are also avid supporters of FEI show jumping on the West Coast.

THE LOWEST LOWS Just six years ago, Francie was hospitalized with nerve damage from years of substance abuse, and feared she may never sit on a horse again. “The only thing worse to me than the prospect of life without drugs and alcohol was the thought of never riding again.” It was then that Francie was admitted to a wilderness therapy program and has been sober ever since.

The Las Vegas National • 2 0 1 8

7

Shortly after leaving the wilderness program, Francie moved to California where she met Trevor Martin, a man she spent several years adventuring through life with. Together, they shared countless memories, hiked many miles and experienced the highs and lows of a relationship. Suddenly and much too soon, Trevor lost his life in a speedflying accident on Mount Whitney. “I cried every day for a year. During this time, I stopped riding. I tried a few times, but I was unable to establish the mindbody connection required,” Looke noted. “But my friends, my horses, were there with me throughout. As time passed, the tears became fewer and I felt my heart heal. After months of processing the grief, I emerged with a new mental focus.”

HORSES AS HEALERS Looke knows her equine connection gave her the mental and physical strength to pull through the depths of addiction and death of a loved one. “I was able to turn to my horses and find strength and solace in the bond we have.” She competed in her first U25 class, at 1.45m, in May of this year and continues to aim high. “Riding requires complete mental focus. That’s one of the things I love about the sport is that when I am on the course everything slips away. It’s pure meditation.”

Francie explained, “I’ve had, and continue to have, triumphs. I’ve had, and continue to have, defeats and setbacks. Through it all, I’ve learned to fight. Our triumphs are often shared accomplishments. We don’t get anywhere alone. Likewise, we shouldn’t blame ourselves for our defeats and setbacks.” Looke has possibly experienced more triumphs, tribulations, and tragedies than someone twice her age. Horses have and continue to be a guiding light. “Without my horses my life was empty. My passion and love for horses is what drove me to get sober. My love for horses and riding inspired me and gave me strength. It continues to do so.”

P AY I N G I T F O R W A R D Although Looke has endured hardship, she is aware how lucky she is to be where she is today and continues to seek a bright tomorrow. “I am truly grateful for the opportunity I have been given and don’t ever want to take it for granted.” The Looke family, and their company, Walter Oil & Gas Corporation, have chosen to support the growth of top equestrian sport. They will be the presenting sponsor of this year’s Longines FEI Jumping World Cup™ Las Vegas.

“Blenheim Equisports is doing everything they can in order to make the sport attainable to as many people as possible and for interest to grow,” Looke said. “We don’t have as many FEI events as Europe or the East Coast. I am excited to do my part and help build up the West Coast in this regard and give other riders a chance to find their place in this incredible sport.” Looke also sits on the board of the Park Place Foundation, a non-profit founded by her trainer Hillary Ridland to support teens and young adults battling with addiction and mental illness as they journey into adulthood. She shares her story of addiction and loss, courage and vitality, with others to help them rise above their tribulations. Looke may not always know the way, but she knows who will take her there. “In my own personal life, a horse has always shown me the way. So, for now, I think the best thing for me to do, is to follow my horse.”

Ride to Göteborg The best show jumpers in the world, both human and equine, are on a quest to land one of approximately 50 places at the Longines FEI Jumping World Cup™ Final to be held April 3–7, 2019, in Göteborg, Sweden. Fourteen of those places will go to North American athletes as they ride to Göteborg through a series of North American League qualifiers held in the USA, Canada, or Mexico.

W H AT I S T H E F I N A L ? The Longines FEI Jumping World CupTM Final, an indoor competition held in the spring each year, is the single most important annual International Championship in equestrian sport. The series, which began in 1978, has sixteen leagues in six continents and has been held at fabulous locations all over the world. In order to be one of the competitors at the prestigious finals in the spring, riders earn FEI World CupTM points for their country of citizenship, i.e. USA, Canada or Mexico, by placing in classes recognized by the FEI. For those who come out on top, the ride to Göteborg will culminate in Göteborg, Sweden. And like the qualifying events, but more so, it will be an evening filled with excitement, suspense, and excruciatingly close competition, set within the framework of this most elegant of sports.

Getting to Know the Woman Behind Morning Star Sporthorses K

arrie Rufer, of Morning Star Sporthorses, owns her own farm in Sacramento, CA, takes care of and prepares her horses herself, and then meets her coach, Enrique Gonzalez, on the road. First and foremost, Rufer ensures the horses are fit and feeling good. “At the shows, we jog the horses each morning, and after every show, we do full clinical exams on the horses,” explained Rufer. “At home, they stay fit by spending a lot of time out of the arena, usually by being ponied by our resident saintly western horse, GP. Even my stallion gets ponied. It’s a great tool to keep their minds sound and their fitness levels high.”

Fast forward a couple of decades and now she is vying for the chance to compete at the 2019 Longines FEI Jumping World Cup™ Finals on her horse, Georgie d’Auvray. “I didn’t realize I wanted to compete at this level until the last couple of years. We did a couple of qualifiers last year but never intended on fighting for a spot to go. My horses have been in great form this year, thanks to all the hard work that goes into managing their health and fitness,” said Rufer. “I’d love to give qualifying for the World Cup a real shot this season.”

F LY I N G H I P P O

TRAILBLAZING

George, her World Cup mount, is special in his own way. “We call him the ‘Flying Hippo’ because his conformation isn’t that of a textbook show jumper. But what he lacks in conformation, he makes up for with how much effort he gives me,” Rufer said fondly. “He is an absolute love. He enjoys spending most of his day napping, where he lets me lay on him while he sleeps, or out in his paddock. He is the most gentle, kind, and sweet horse in my stable.”

“No one in my family has ever been involved in horses, so it was just by chance that I sat on my first horse on a ranch when I was three years old,” Rufer noted. “I started riding Western but then switched to dressage. When my dressage instructor noticed that I spent more time jumping the horses in and out of the dressage arena than practicing 20-meter circles, he suggested I give show jumping a try.”

The pair hit a groove at the end of last year and continued that journey through WEF, Spruce Meadows, Thunderbird and now the fall qualifying circuit in California. “Every day presents new challenges, some that we sail through and some that knock us down to the ground. Knowing that I can always join George while he’s napping in his stall at the end of the day is the truly special aspect of our relationship.”

As far as preparing her horses for the show ring, Rufer rarely jumps. “I spend a lot of time doing flatwork and work with poles on the ground to help increase the elasticity of the horse’s stride. It’s an odd day to see a full course set in my arena and if there is one, we don’t typically jump over 1.30m (4'3").”

WORDS OF WISDOM As many top horsemen would say, the horse comes first. It is the same for Morning Star Sporthorses. “I think it’s crucial to appreciate what’s really important about this sport: our relationship with the horses who allow us the privilege of riding them.” As for her riding career, Rufer takes it one day at a time. “If I feel confident that I can reasonably tackle a new challenge, I’ll do it. If not, I patiently wait until that confidence comes. At the beginning of the year, I began riding with Enrique Gonzalez at WEF, and he’s been a great friend and mentor to help me believe that I was ready to step up to the next level. And now here we are!”

Although his career highlights now include a number of Olympic and World Championship medals and international accolades, Farrington claims his most memorable victory was in 2006 when he won his first 5* Grand Prix. At that time, he thought he actually had a chance of making a career out of show jumping. Photo © McCool Photography

Will Simpson Will Simpson holds a prestigious place in the history of show jumping as the anchor rider who clinched the gold for the U.S. Team in the 2008 Summer Olympics. He started riding at age 11, when his mother signed him up for lessons with his sister, thinking maybe he could be a cowboy. But after seeing jumpers for the first time, he was hooked. Simpson has a way with sensitive horses and has taken several mounts to the winners circle. He is looking to take his current horse to Sweden where Simpson would compete his fifth FEI Jumping World Cup™ Finals, and his first since 2004.

Rescue is Only the Beginning... Celebrating 10 Years of Lifesaving Work! By: M. R. Rogers

N

estled on a cozy little ranch in Chino Hills, California, Red Bucket Equine Rescue is doing very big work. Red Bucket is a volunteer run 501(c) 3 non-profit organization that unconditionally serves the abused, starving, lame, sick, slaughter bound, and unwanted. With a growing national presence and some of the best results in the country, Red Bucket is preparing to celebrate their 10th anniversary of lifesaving work. Given that a recent UC Davis study cites that 70% of equine rescues close within the first three years, Red Bucket really has something to celebrate! The Red Bucket Mission has three parts. First, they save slaughter bound, abused, starving, desperate and

surrendered equines. Second, they rehabilitate and train them, giving them time to heal and regain trust in humankind…and in themselves. All of Red Bucket’s efforts are to fulfill the third and final part of their mission; to place the horses in permanent, loving, forever homes. When a horse comes to Red Bucket it receives a bucket, a name, the gift of dignity...and a promise that really means something. Red Bucket keeps its promise too, and they have saved hundreds of desperate horses, making a remarkable impact on those horses’ lives and on equine welfare. Every one of those horses has a story, and I have asked them to share a few: The Las Vegas National • 2 0 1 8

retained his tail, stood amongst them; starving, defiant, mustering fury without the energy or ability to hold his own head up. While Finbar’s ribs faded, he clung, committed to his anger, for a long while. Today, nearly ten years later, 48 of the horses rescued that day - including Finbar - have been adopted into loving, devoted forever homes. Finbar slowly shed his vitriol and anger, replacing it with joy, affection, and an authentic happiness; grateful...and once again glorious.

Finbar Before

THE REAL FACTS.

FINBAR Fifty starving horses stood in filth; not a blade of hay in sight, the scarce, shallow water squalid and undrinkable. The scene resembled a graveyard of desperation, with vacant, helpless eyes, untreated festering wounds, and bones protruding through hide that appeared to be stretched over skeletons. The majority of the suffering were once beautifully bred Irish Thoroughbreds, victims of a breeding scandal and human greed. Several others had been “collected” at local racetracks to be sold for meat. The horses stood in hopeless despair, their tails long ago chewed off in a dire attempt for sustenance. Finbar, the leader and the only stallion who had

ROULETTE In keeping with our passion for serving the desperate, Red Bucket led a rescue effort that impacted 31 feral pregnant mares, saving them from the anguish and brutality of slaughter. Consistent with our practice of saving as many lives as we possibly can...and then one more, we were able to rescue a terrified baby who

Roulette Before

Roulette slowly began to trust that she was safe, and her gentle-natured personality emerged. We enrolled her in Red Bucket “Charm Farm” and began the slow process of teaching her that people are kind and touch is good. This last spring, in preparation for the promise that we made to her, Roulette began her under-saddle training. A pleaser by nature, Roulette has emerged a confident, beautiful and willing horse.

Clarabelle Before

had been separated from her mother and mixed in with frantic mares. Roulette was petrified, filthy and exhausted when she arrived. Dried mud and manure caked her matted coat and she shrank from our touch, trembling uncontrollably. During those first several weeks, it seemed as though every time we peeked in at our little orphan she was asleep, curled in a little forlorn ball in the corner of her stall.

CLARABELLE Clarabelle arrived with a group of malnourished and very sick horses who we saved from a rescue group that had recently collapsed. The group was not providing enough food or basic care, and had unconscionably been participating in breeding. All of the horses were unhandled, semi feral, and had alarmingly high fevers, which required us to isolate them and implement strict biosecurity protocols. Once Clarabelle and the others were nursed back to health, Clarabelle was enrolled in Red Bucket “Charm Farm”. Initially untouchable and fractious, Clarabelle has been halter trained, received farrier care, and relishes human touch. As is our custom with youngsters, Clarabelle has also been enrolled in our mentorship program and partnered with 32-yearold Casey, who has the responsibility of teaching Clarabelle how to be a good little horse. Clarabelle will be trained in preparation for the promise that was made to her, a loving family of her very own.

neglect, and obscenely overgrown feet made every step to our awaiting trailer an agonizing event. Once safely home and with a great sense of urgency, we assembled our team of caregivers. Starting with an immediate nutrition plan of round-the-clock monitoring and re-feeding every two hours, we began the very careful process of providing nourishment and restoring health. Due to the severe nature of her hooves, our veterinarian partnered with our farrier, and working from radiographs, utilized a tree saw to reduce the tremendous growth of hoof that impeded Mira’s ability to walk even the shortest distance. We were profoundly grateful to rescue our beautiful Mira, and honored to serve her as we reclaimed her dignity and life. Mira is a very strong representation of why we will never stop

saving and serving the desperate.

MIRA Red Bucket responded swiftly to an urgent call about a hoarding situation that had reached the tipping point of implosion. In dismantling the operation and finding safety for all horses involved, Red Bucket brought two of the most damaged victims home to the safety of our little red ranch. The horses had spent two decades in the growing absence of even the most basic care. Nutrition, farrier, dentistry, and veterinary care had been ignored altogether. We held our collective breath loading the little mare, Mira, as her malnutrition,

BLOTZER

Mira Before

Sometimes the act of rescue is arduous and has the side effect of nail biting. In the rescue of Blotzer, we also held our breath while trying to locate him and bring him to safety. Blotzer came from a lifetime of repeated abuse, and after one too many violent hits to the head, his cornea was perforated, causing his eye to collapse. He was dumped in a dry riverbed; bleeding, terrified, and in insurmountable pain. An eye injury of this type is one of the most excruciating injuries that a horse will experience. In Blotzer’s case it was the worst that

our vet reported ever seeing! He suffered without veterinary care or pain relief for over two and a half weeks until we could finally locate and rescue him. He arrived in a terrified state, covered in visible saddle marks, dried sweat, and a painfully traumatized face. He submerged his poor swollen muzzle in a fresh bucket of water, seemingly unable to quench his thirst. Our veterinarian arrived promptly, and Blotzer began his first day as a treasured resident and valued horse. He quickly developed a sweet tooth (especially for carrots and butterscotch candies) and an incredibly affectionate nature. His initial care required multiple bandage changes daily, and we would emerge from his paddock drenched from his repeated licking, nuzzling and kissing. It has become impossible to pass his paddock without his adorable whinny for attention...and touch. He is making great progress with his physical healing, and what is most remarkable is Blotzer’s innocence and ability to forgive and trust. While he has lost the sight in his left eye, we have been able to save the globe, and much more importantly, we have saved Blotzer.
