On behalf of the Fédération Equestre Internationale, it is my pleasure to welcome you to Las Vegas for another leg of the highly anticipated Longines FEI Jumping World Cup™ North American League 2019/2020. Over the next few days, we will have some of the world’s finest sport horses, and athletes showcase their talent as they chase precious FEI World Cup™ points. The USA, Canada and Mexico will once again be setting the scene of the North American League with 14 suspense-filled qualifiers of which eight count towards the overall standings. Our North American journey began in Langley (CAN), now we are here in Las Vegas prior to heading out to Guadalajara and Leon (MEX) and Wellington and Ocala, Florida, only to name a few; at each leg, we are guaranteed to experience top-level sport as athletes and horses brave courses of highest standards, set up by some of the best course designers in the world. Sixteen leagues, including the North American League, make up the highly successful and global FEI World Cup™ Jumping series which has been in existence since 1978; this season 108 qualifiers pave the road to the Longines FEI World Cup™ Jumping Final in Las Vegas, USA in April 2020. The format of the FEI World Cup™ series guarantees edge of your seat competitions whilst displaying the fantastic bond between horses and people; the trust, the communication, the hard work and the patience required. It is this bond which enables impressive feats of athleticism to be achieved and the core around which the whole FEI community revolves. This new season will once again be filled with fantastic sports moments, and I would like to thank Longines most sincerely for their vital contribution, which ensures quality competition and management throughout the series. Together, we are advancing the legacy of this tremendous series whose appeal continues to grow and stretch into new territories attracting many new fans along the way. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the Organising Committee and their partners for their vision and efforts at enabling this event and acting as a motor for international equestrian sport in the region. To the volunteer body and sponsors, as well as the athletes, the enthusiastic public and the media representatives, thank you for your dedication and loyalty; this would not be possible without you! In whatever capacity you have come here today, I wish you an enjoyable event, conducted in the best spirit of great horsemanship.

W H AT I S T H E F I N A L ? The Longines FEI Jumping World Cup™ Final, an international competition held in the spring each year, is one of the most important annual indoor championships in equestrian sport. Other equestrian events at this level, the Olympics and the World Championships, occur every four years. The series, which began in 1978, has sixteen leagues and sub-leagues with qualifying events in six continents and the Final is held at fabulous locations all over the world. In order to be one of the competitors at the prestigious Final in April of 2020, riders earn FEI World Cup™ points for their country of citizenship, by placing in qualifying classes recognized by the FEI. For those who come out on top, the ride to Vegas will culminate here at the Thomas & Mack Center in April of 2020. And like the qualifying events, but more so, it will be an event not to miss, filled with excitement, suspense, and often excruciatingly close competition, set within the framework of this most elegant of sports.
W H I C H C O U N T R I E S H AV E W O N ? Since the first FEI World CupTM Final 40 years ago, which took place in Gothenburg, Sweden, 25 different riders from 9 countries have won the prestigious title. Rescue is Only the Beginning... Celebrating 10 Years of Lifesaving Work! By: M. R. Rogers
N
estled on a cozy little ranch in Chino Hills, California, Red Bucket Equine Rescue is doing very big work. Red Bucket is a volunteer run 501(c) 3 non-profit organization that unconditionally serves the abused, starving, lame, sick, slaughter bound, and unwanted. With a growing national presence and some of the best results in the country, Red Bucket has recently celebrated their 10th anniversary of lifesaving work. Given that a recent UC Davis study cites that 70% of equine rescues close within the first three years, Red Bucket really has something to celebrate! The Red Bucket Mission has three parts. First, they save slaughter bound, abused, starving, desperate and
surrendered equines. Second, they rehabilitate and train them, giving them time to heal and regain trust in humankind... and in themselves. All of Red Bucket’s efforts are to fulfill the third and final part of their mission; to place the horses in permanent, loving, forever homes. When a horse comes to Red Bucket it receives a bucket, a name, the gift of dignity...and a promise that really means something. Red Bucket keeps its promises too, and they have saved hundreds of desperate horses, making a remarkable impact on those horses’ lives and on equine welfare. Every one of those horses has a story, and I have asked them to share a few: The Las Vegas National • 2 0 1 9

PLAYBOY (opening photo) His sire was one of the top performing barrel horses in the world. His breeder is known for pasture breeding a great number of horses every spring. The horses are rounded up, roped, branded and castrated in the field without the humanity of painkillers or sedation. The stunned horses are then tied behind a tractor and dragged in an effort to “halter train” them. Unbelievably, every spring the herd is culled and the “extra” and unwanted horses are intentionally sent to slaughter, all as a part of the rancher’s business model. We were fortunate to rescue Play Boy and his full sister Cover Girl, and continue the long process of rebuilding their trust and rewriting a painful and brutal beginning.
LIAM Shattered, starving and abused, Red Bucket rescued Liam from a shelter where he very narrowly escaped euthanasia. Liam was carefully re-fed, given the time in which to heal, and then provided with necessary training and ground manners. Liam has transformed into an athletic, kind and willing mount and was celebrated as the 100th Red Bucket adoption. Today Liam is very much a wanted horse and lives with his forever family and very own little girl, a poignant reminder of the importance of second chances.
ROULETTE In keeping with our passion for serving the desperate, Red Bucket led a rescue effort that impacted 31 feral pregnant mares, saving them from the anguish and brutality of slaughter. Consistent with our practice of saving as many as we can...and then one more, we were able to save a terrified baby whose mother had already been shipped. Roulette arrived at Red Bucket petrified, filthy, and exhausted. Dried mud and manure caked her matted coat and she shrank from our touch, trembling uncontrollably. Roulette was enrolled in Red Bucket “Charm Farm” and began the slow process of learning that people are kind and the world is safe. Roulette, a pleaser by nature, has just completed her under-saddle training and has emerged a confident, beautiful, willing horse. No longer alone and motherless, Roulette is well on her way to a forever family of her own.

LEGACY When a breeder died suddenly, he left a legacy of debt and two stranded horses headed for a kill auction. With great thanks to a generous donor and dear friend, Legacy has been given the gift of training and is proving to have a remarkable enjoyment for work. Perhaps even more notable is Legacy’s endearing personality and kind temperament. Legacy is in the final stages of his under saddle training in preparation for a forever home of his own.
TORNADO & PETEY Our donkeys, like our horses, come to Red Bucket for protection, safety and the promise of a loving, gentle life. Thanks to the remarkable women of Oatman, Arizona who chronicle, care for and serve as their guardians, we have been privileged to save four generations from the same family. Tornado came to the safety of Red Bucket and safely gave birth to Petey. Perhaps the greatest gift of all was providing Tornado a safe landing place in which to love and nurture her last foal!
DARCY & MATHE Darcy came to us feral, malnourished, terrified and very pregnant. We were able to rescue her from slaughter along with 31 other pregnant mares. Working through our rescue network, all of the mares were safely placed. Three of the mares came to Red Bucket and delivered their healthy and beautiful foals. We find irony in Darcy’s daughter, Mathe. Like our other foals, Mathe survived the very real threat of slaughter only to be born at Red Bucket, a wanted horse. A color known as grulla, Mathe is the rarest and the most sought after equine color. She is also beautiful, with flawless conformation and a kind and gentle temperament. Mathe has enjoyed a peaceful and playful childhood and will never know the horrific abuse and terror that her mother survived.
DURHAM, REYNOLDS & FOSTER Stunning and in excellent flesh, Durham, Foster and Reynolds were rescued from a slaughter auction where they were being sold by the pound. These majestic mustangs were given the Red Bucket promise of a second chance...and all three have been adopted into loving and devoted forever homes of their own, proof positive that nice things really do happen!
ECHO Echo is an all-too-familiar example of over-training, greed and commoditization. Echo stepped down from the racing world to the show world, and then stepped down again from barn to barn, with lots of expectations but without anyone listening to him...he was in pain. Today Echo is living his dream as a mentor and protector of donkey siblings Buffy and Joey, and enjoys a double stall, lots of turnout time and enrichment. He loves to be groomed, seems to relish positive reinforcement...and no force. Echo has shed his vitriol and pain and is enjoying a meaningful life as he awaits his forever home.

RED-DONK-ULOUS DONKEYS Because of their tenacity and sense of self-protection, donkeys are frequently victims of horrible abuse. Loyal, friendly, intelligent, empathic, compassionate, and “Reddonk-ulous”, the donkeys of Red Bucket are adopted into families as companions and treasured friends.
ANCHOR MAN Anchor Man is a definite dream come true and another example of the many horses facing euthanasia due to the tremendous cost of caring for and keeping horses. Oftentimes horses are prematurely put down rather than receiving the necessary diagnostics and required time to heal. Anchor Man is a stunning and well-bred Appendix Quarter Horse and is a gentleman and a pure delight to look at with a bit of a rascally personality. Thanks to the generosity of those who support Red Bucket, Anchor Man has a second chance at life and his new adopter will have the chance of a lifetime!
CLARABELLE Clarabelle arrived with a group of malnourished and very sick horses who we saved from a rescue group that had recently collapsed. The group was not providing enough food or basic care, and had unconscionably been participating in breeding. All of the horses were unhandled, semi-feral, and had alarmingly high fevers which required us to isolate them and implement strict biosecurity protocols. Once Clarabelle and the others were nursed back to health, Clarabelle was enrolled in Red Bucket “Charm Farm”. Initially untouchable and fractious, Clarabelle has been halter trained, received farrier care, and relishes human touch. As is our custom with youngsters, Clarabelle was enrolled in our mentorship program and partnered with a geriatric gelding who had the dual role of teaching Clarabelle how to be a good little horse and providing paternal nurturing. Clarabelle has embraced life as a wanted horse and is well on her way to a happy and safe life.
TASHA Today, Tasha has come a very long way from the distrusting, highly defensive and terrified filly that we rescued from slaughter. She has proven to be extraordinarily loving and affectionate, a real “girliegirl”, enjoying being groomed, pampered and primped. She has reclaimed her childhood...and her life...and is demonstrating intelligence and a desire to learn and love. Tasha has benefited by attending “Charm Farm” and has begun her under saddle training and will soon be ready for a forever home of her own.
THE REAL FACTS. We understand that “Rescue is Only the Beginning” • 130,000-150,000 American horses are slaughtered for human
DEAGLAN Deaglan is an increasingly familiar story of what happens when a horse gets stepped down without a responsible plan or a safety net for the horse. After a show career where he gave his all, and later the descent into life as a lesson horse – where he gave all that he had left – his owner, a self-proclaimed lover of the Hanoverian, sent him to slaughter after she had used up everything he had to give and copious amounts of Bute would no longer keep him sound. While Deaglan came to us injured and desperate, we found that there was nothing “broken” about him. He was a tenured and trusted professor in our Curry Comb Club and taught both new and experienced team members the “Red Bucket Way” of horse care, and quite possibly the definition of forgiveness. Deaglan’s legacy at Red Bucket is that of a beloved friend, trusted teacher, and true champion.
consumption each year. • 92.3% of horses going to slaughter are trained and in good condition. • 80% of first-time horse owners get rid of their horses within five years. • Thousands of rescued or adopted horses are returned to the slaughter or abuse pipeline because many rescue groups do not have a responsible plan for their care, training and future. • With many agencies, a high percentage of their donations go towards overhead and management.

ften the first to arrive at the barn and the last to leave, grooms work behind the scenes to prepare not just a horse, but an athlete, to perform at their best. The Grooms Award, Ltd. believes in recognizing the professional hunter/jumper horse show groom for their devotion, dedication, and love for the horse. Founded in 1998, The Grooms Award was first presented to the groom of the winning Grand Prix horse at the Pennsylvania National Horse Show in Harrisburg, PA. The trophy was named in honor of Moira Caffarey, who passed away unexpectedly in 1997, and cared for FEI Jumping World Cup™ Champion “I Love You.” The award soon gained national and international support, with contributions coming in from across the U.S., England, Ireland, France, and South Africa. In 2014, a second trophy, named after horse transporter George Hennessy, was added to the program. So today, two perpetual trophies – the Caffarey-Hennessy trophies – are presented to the winning groom. The Grooms Award, Ltd. strives to continue to reward Grand Prix grooms for their professional commitment. Here at The Las Vegas National, CSI3*-W, each of the FEI grooms with horses in the Longines FEI Jumping World Cup™ Las Vegas will be presented with tote bags filled with gift cards and other goodies from generous sponsors, as a thank you for their hard work and dedication. In addition, the groom of the winning horse in the class will be honored with trophies and more. A nonprofit 501(c)3 charitable organization, The Grooms Award, Ltd. has expanded to offer events at a handful of major horse shows each year. In 2019, events were held in Palm Beach, Devon, Lake Placid, Gold Cup, Del Mar, Harrisburg, Kentucky, and now, Las Vegas. Want to show your appreciation to a horse show groom? Go to groomsaward.org to donate today and take part in celebrating those who care for these amazing horses. #GroomsRock The Las Vegas National • 2 0 1 9
