WELCOME Welcome to the Blenheim EquiSports show season! Following an amazing 2016, we have expanded our existing programs and added some new ones as we continue striving to provide top quality competition in a world-class setting. Our sincere thanks go out to the competitors, owners, trainers, parents, grooms, and sponsors for their endless support.

From world champion hunters and pony riders to World Cup™ jumpers and equitation riders, Blenheim is pleased to offer competitive options for every horse and rider. We support USHJA programs including the World Champion Hunter Rider Series, USHJA International, National and Pony Hunter Derbies, the USHJA/WCHR West Coast Hunter Spectacular, the second inaugural USHJA Hunterdon Cup Equitation Classic – West and new this year the USHJA 3'3" Jumping Seat Medal. The USEF Junior Hunter National Championship – West will also be a part of summer in Del Mar again this year. We celebrate our young horses and riders—the future of our sport—with the Interactive Mortgage U25 Developing Rider Series, the Young Jumper Championships Western League Final, and the Interactive Mortgage Horses 10 & Under Futurity Series and Final. Our new Young Hunter program mirrors the young jumpers, offering the same plethora of opportunities for 5, 6 and 7-year-old hunters. With free entries, discounted stall fees, and a Fall Championship, this promises to be a great season for developing young horses. Throughout the season, awards will be presented to top open, junior, amateur, children, adult and pony riders, offering prizes of quality equestrian products from our top name-brand sponsors. With a record number of participants in 2016, and prize money for the Final topping $60,000, the popular Markel Insurance 1.40m Grand Prix Series and Final returns. We look forward to culminating another great year with the Markel Insurance Final as well as the Longines FEI World Cup™ Jumping Las Vegas and more in November. We continue to honor the bright future of our sport by offering competition on grass fields in beautiful southern California settings, creating a special environment for growth and learning. It is our privilege to host events where the enthusiasm and the skill that riders at all levels bring to the equestrian community converge. We welcome you to our show season, The Blenheim EquiSports Team

U25 SERIES IS BACK AND BIGGER THAN EVER Exclusive to Blenheim EquiSports and the HITS Desert Circuit/National Sunshine Circuit Program, the Interactive Mortgage U25 Developing Rider Series will offer more prize money and more qualifiers during the 2017 season! Offering $112,500 in prize money and 20 qualifying events, the Final will once again be held at the Las Vegas National Horse Show, produced by Blenheim EquiSports, in November.

U25 EXPANDS Last year, in addition to the qualifiers at the Blenheim EquiSports horse shows, The Interactive Mortgage U25 Series expanded to include two additional qualifiers at the HITS Sunshine Series. Participation in the Series doubled, illustrating the importance of offering this opportunity to young riders stepping up to the next level.

2016 $25,000 Interactive Mortgage U25 Final Winner Nayel Nassar

You are getting to have the experience with top course designers, alongside the top riders, but at the same time you are only competing with your own age group. It’s the best of both worlds, from the experience aspect and the competition aspect.

The Series is open to all U25 Riders from the beginning of the calendar year in which they reach the age of 16 until the end of the calendar year in which they reach the age of 25. Amateur classification is not a factor for entry.

U25 Rider Morgan Dickerson

The year culminated in Las Vegas where nineteen under twenty-five riders competed in the $25,000 Interactive Mortgage U25 Final. After a five horse jump-off, it was Egypt’s Nayel Nassar aboard his up and coming Holsteiner mare Acita that couldn’t be beat. Blenheim EquiSports would like to thank Interactive Mortgage and the DeLong family for their outstanding commitment to the sport - it is exciting to see the expansion of the U25 program. Morgan Dickerson was the Series leader going into the Final

MARKEL INSURANCE GRAND PRIX SERIES IN ITS FOURTH YEAR Back by popular demand, Blenheim EquiSports will host thirteen of the sixteen qualifiers of the 2017 Markel Insurance Regional Standard Grand Prix Series. Exclusive to Blenheim EquiSports and Langer Equestrian Group, the qualifiers are open to all. The Final will be held at the Las Vegas National Horse Show in November. 2016 HIGHLIGHTS Last year’s season saw a record total of 167 competitors vying for an invitation to the Markel Insurance 1.40m Grand Prix Series Final in Las Vegas. Superb horse and rider pairs, challenging courses and super fast jump-offs attracted large and enthusiastic crowds.

$61,850 Markel Insurance 1.40m Grand Prix Series Final Winners Michelle Parker and Cupilor

Twenty-five of the top point earners in the series competed in the Final in Las Vegas. With eleven clean in the first round, including riders Tina Yates, Eric Navet, and Nayel Nassar, Michelle Parker and Cross Creek Farm, Inc.’s Cupilor pulled out all the stops to clinch the win. Parker won the first qualifier of the season (with Vancouver 45) and finished in the top eight in nine of the year’s qualifying classes. As the series leader going into the Final with 441 points, it was a well-earned victory.

Tina Yates won the last qualifier and was 2nd in the Final

Blenheim EquiSports would like to thank Markel Insurance for supporting show jumping on the West Coast.

Peter Petschenig was 3rd in Series points and finished 3rd in the Final

With $65,000 in prize money offered through the season, including $20,000 allotted for the Final, this program has attracted some of the brightest up-and-coming equine stars.

YOUNG HORSES EXCEL IN 2016 Wrapping up the fourth year of the series with the $20,000 Interactive Mortgage 10 & Under Futurity Series Final in Del Mar, title sponsor Gregg and Evette DeLong of Interactive Mortgage were on hand to present the award to Bjorn Ikast and his nine-year-old Supernatural. By leaving a stride out of the combination, Ikast and Supernatural galloped through the timers just about a quarter of a second faster than runner up Nayal Nassar and Dee Jee.

“

I think that it is very important that the up-and-coming horses get the chance to prove they are nearly ready to move up, and for them to win some money, too.

“

GET TO Davin Malmqvist

KNOW…

Davin Malmqvist Katie Frank Jeff Gilbert Janet Fall

Where did you grow up? “I grew up in a couple places. I was born outside of Toronto, Ontario, and lived there until I was four or five years old, then my family moved to Calgary. When I was almost nine years old, my family moved to Cobham, Surrey in England. That is where I started riding. I was eleven when my family moved back to Calgary, where I have mainly lived to this day.” – DM Katie Frank

“I grew up in Beachwood,Ohio very close to the Chagrin Show Grounds, where the first Grand Prix was held in the U.S.” – KF “I grew up in a house surrounded by orange groves in Redlands, California, about halfway between LA and Palm Springs.” – JG “I grew up in Northern California.” – JF

When did your career in the horse show world begin?

Jeff Gilbert

“I am not 100% sure as to the exact year. I was boarding at Spruce Meadows. My horse had an injury and there was an indoor show that weekend. I asked if they needed any help, and found myself behind a microphone. I believe that was around 1995. It just kept going from there.” – DM

Janet Fall

“I started in my first small show in 1959 and on from there...” – KF “I started riding when I was six, showing western horses when I was eight, and competing at national shows when I was twelve. I was honored to be asked to retire my greatest horse “Copper” at the Del Mar National Horse Show where we had enjoyed much success. At the retirement ceremony in 1976, Alan Balch, then manager, ask me if I wanted to work a horse show. I worked my first show that year at the Forum International Horse Show as a Ringmaster. That was over a thousand contracts and 40

years ago. I quit competitive riding to continue a full-time career in producing, managing and officiating horse shows. I found my career to be too time consuming, so I sold my last horse when I was twenty-five. I was lucky to manage some great shows back in the day including Indio, Santa Barbara, Flintridge, Huntington Beach and Showpark. I still manage a few, but today I am happy to be an announcer for some of the country’s greatest organizations like Blenheim.” – JG “Started in 1977.” – JF

When was your first show with Blenheim? “Honestly I do not remember. I believe it was over ten years ago at one of the August shows in Showpark.” – DM “My first show with Blenheim was as a Steward when I first returned to California, shortly after planes flew into the World Trade Centers on September 11, 2001.” – KF “I have been a team member around here for nearly twenty years!” – JG “I think my first show with Blenheim that I remember was the 2000 Olympic Trials.” – JF

What is one of your favorite memories from a Blenheim show? “This has to be one of the toughest questions to answer as so many of my favorite memories from my career have been at Blenheim shows over the years. Don’t get me wrong, I have favorite memories from other shows too. There is one memory that stands out in my mind: prior to the Grand Prix, there was a special ceremony where Susan Hutchison was so deservingly inducted into the Show Jumping Hall of Fame. It was truly an amazing moment.” – DM

The beautiful grass field and packed stands at the 2000 Olympic Trials held at Blenheim. A favorite memory for many!

“There are SO many. I think that when Coach Robert Ridland was honored following the success of our Olympic team in Rio was so very special. There are so many more that it’s hard to think of just one thing. If pressed, it would be the Olympic Trials and the “Road to Athens.” Blenheim has helped make West Coast show jumping special for all H/J disciplines with Scarlett’s Speed Derby, and the great

USHJA International and National Hunter Derbies, not to mention watching the many Medal Finals hosted.” – KF “My favorite memory was being there for the start of Blenheim’s grass hunter fields, one of the fantastic, unique offerings only Blenheim has. The show hunter was made for the grass and the pace of the field, and the great riders shine the brightest while answering the challenges. On Blenheim grass, I have been honored to announce and present some of the most famous hunters and hunter riders in the world. I am lucky now to work with some of the largest hunter shows in America, in Wellington and at Capital Challenge, but I’m never more excited than when I pick up the mic at the Pacific Hunter Field and announce a ninety score to one perfect partnership on what I call “America’s greatest stage on turf.” There is no place like home and Blenheim is like family to me. ” – JG “For sure, the 2000 trials were a favorite memory; the transformation of the field was amazing.” – JF

What have you done outside the horse show world? “Prior to what I currently do for a living, I was an Account Manager in the Commercial Markets for the Royal Bank of Canada.” – DM “I loved college and wanted to incorporate Sports Psychology into my life, using cognitive behavior modifications for riders specializing in mental fear for Amateurs. Although my research was not significant to the degree of alpha necessary for my Ph.D., I continue to explore how these simple techniques can be helpful. I swim, surf a bit, and also make simple jewelry and greeting cards as a way to nurture my artistic side.” – KF “Everything and nothing. When I was young, I won a Clio award for advertising in local radio. I used to do comedy gigs and impressions at a local club to relieve “pressure.” A radio guy asked me to produce some commercials based on my “voices,” and they were very successful. After the award, they offered me a full-time job but I turned it down! I have never held a civilian job – I have literally been in the horse shows all my life.” – JG “I have seen the colors change in Denali while camping in the back country, fly fished the Madison River in Montana, and zip lined over Gatorland in Florida. It is a wonderful life.” – JF

BLENHEIM EQUISPORTS

If you could vacation anywhere, where would you go? “This actually is another tough question. In 2016, I spent thirty-six weeks on the road in hotels, so I really enjoy going home. I would like to go anywhere where there is fantastic diving. Bora Bora would probably top that list of places I would like to go, but then I would also love to do some Antartic diving.” – DM “I love the water. I would return to Maui anytime.” – KF “I collect antiques and art, and love history, so next I would like to go to Greece. I have been all over Western Europe but not Greece. Of course, I would have to stop in Paris again on the way. I am a hopeless romantic, and great food, art, and history in one place is paradise for me. I also have a room dedicated to John Wayne and my many friends in the horse business have made donations to it over the years, it’s unreal.” – JG “Right now, I would like to go to Ethiopia to help my friends at Uryadi’s Village.” – JF

What makes you smile? “I would have to say horses make me smile; well, dogs too.” – DM “Esmerelda. My dog and all the special people I get to be with.” – KF “My loves. My life partner Ylva Aberg, who is the massage therapist in the concession area at Blenheim. A Swedish immigrant and proud American, she has a toy hauler and takes it to all the shows. My gifted daughter Hannah Grace who works at Children’s Hospital Denver. Our dogs: a Corgi and two rescued Cocker Spaniels. Horses, wild animals, all things nature, and as my Facebook friends know: the beach! From Carlsbad Beach to Palm Beach, my life is a beach.” – JG “Making someone else smile.” – JF

USHJA INTRODUCES 3’3” JUMPING SEAT MEDAL FINALS ON BOTH COASTS NEW EQUITATION FINALS MODEL THE USEF SHOW JUMPING TALENT SEARCH Based on the popularity of the USHJA 3’3” Jumping Seat Medal over the last two years, the United States Hunter Jumper Association is pleased to announce the series will include Finals on both the east and west coasts for the 2017 competition year. The Capital Challenge Horse Show and International Jumping Festival at Blenheim will host the respective Finals. Riders qualify for the USHJA 3’3” Jumping Seat Medal Finals when they have accumulated a minimum of 10 points in a USHJA 3’3” Jumping Seat Medal class from Dec. 1 of the current competition year to 60 days prior to the Finals. Riders may not cross-enter into the USEF Show Jumping Talent Search Finals. Qualified riders may choose to compete in either the East or West Finals.

We have watched with excitement as this program has grown over the last two years. We hope that by offering these finals we give riders a preview of what to expect in the Talent Search. Encouraging great equitation at every level is so important, no matter what you hope to accomplish in this sport.

Robin Rost, USHJA Joint Equitation Task Force chair

The Finals consist of three phases: Phase I (Flat Phase), Phase II (Gymnastics Phase) and Phase III (Jumping Phase) that will be held over two days. The Capital Challenge Horse Show will host the USHJA 3’3” Jumping Seat Medal Finals - East on Sept. 29 and 30 at Prince George’s Equestrian Center in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. The International Jumping Festival at Blenheim will host the USHJA 3’3” Jumping Seat Medal Finals - West on Sept. 23 and 24 at the Rancho Mission Viejo Riding Park at San Juan Capistrano, California. “We very much appreciate Capital Challenge and Blenheim EquiSports stepping up to host this test year, so we can evaluate the needs of our membership,” continued Rost. “These two venues provide the perfect atmosphere to showcase this exciting opportunity.”

Riders may qualify for the Finals by earning a minimum of 10 points in USHJA 3'3" Jumping Seat Medals offered across the country. Louise Taylor/USHJA Archives

Phase I and II will be conducted on the first day, and the second day will wrap up with Phase III and if necessary a work off and any additional testing. Phase I will include no more than 10 riders at a time who will be tested on the same flatwork elements at the walk, trot, and canter, including the collection and lengthening of stride at a trot and canter. Riders may also be asked to perform more advanced flatwork such as a counter canter, turn on the haunches, shoulder-in and leg yield. In Phase II, riders will be asked to perform three of the Standard Gymnastics Exercises similar to those in the specifications for the USEF Show Jumping Talent Search Finals. Phase III will be held in a jumper ring and feature a course of 10-12 jumper-style obstacles set at a height of 1.0m with spreads up to 1.10m (triple bar up to 1.15m). The course will include one double and one triple combination or three double combinations. The course will also include a dry, above-ground Liverpool. The time allowed will be calculated at 350 meters per minute. A work off is required for all riders within five points of the leader following the completion of Phase III, and the work off will consist of a shortened course with a tight time allowed. Additional testing may be required. For more information, including the full specifications, visit ushja.org/jumpseatmedal.

Beck works as an assistant for Chestnut Hill and Beverly Jovais in Petaluma, CA. A graduate of the University of San Francisco, Beck was a working student for Lumpy Kilham, Neil Jones and she joined Jovais at Chestnut Hill in the summer 2013.

The Emerging Professional Grant Runner-up recipient, earning $3,000 of Blenheim EquiSports horse show credit, is Alexandra Biederman, the assistant trainer for Ginnie Bryant at Equites Riding Club in San Juan Capistrano, CA. Having formed a syndicate to purchase a horse, Biederman has a chance to compete in her first Grand Prix classes this season. All those who reviewed the applications felt that two awards weren’t enough. Expanding the program, Blenheim EquiSports decided to award two additional grants of $1,000 of horse show credit to both Stephanie Nagler, assistant to Cha Cha Jago of Jigsaw Farms in Brentwood, CA, and Bailey Fuller, assistant trainer at Lucy Alabaster’s Sweetwater Stables. “Through hard work, perseverance, and the help of many generous people, I have built a reputation for myself that I’m proud of,” Beck noted in her application. “Showing is an exciting part of what we do, but I know it’s not just about winning ribbons and getting to ride nice horses. It’s about doing right by the horses and students while continuing to learn so you can be the best horseman you can be.”

INTRODUCING THE AMERICAN TRADITION OF EXCELLENCE EQUITATION CHALLENGE BLENHEIM JUNE CLASSIC III TO HOST INAUGURAL EVENT, PRESENTED BY WHITETHORNE

After months of careful planning, Whitethorne is pleased to announce the all-new American Tradition of Excellence Equitation Challenge. This unique, three-phase class is open to all riders of all ages, both juniors and amateurs, and will debut this summer at the Blenheim June Classic III. Prizes include a $10,000 cash prize for the winning trainer and a new saddle for the winning rider. Highly renowned professionals Bernie Traurig and Stacia Madden will judge, but there’s more. Mentors will be available, such as Karen Healey, who will serve as Technical Delegate, and Tonya Johnston, who will provide Mental Skills Coaching. Georgy Maskrey-Segesman of Whitethorne, who is responsible for the creation of the class, sought to bring more educational opportunities to the West Coast equitation world. After delving into competitive dressage herself, she noticed the lack of feedback available to equitation riders. She feels that the written comments received after a dressage competition detailing each movement and what needs to be improved are a priceless source of instruction and motivation. She aims to give West Coast riders a chance to explore what the judges are looking for and gain knowledge while competing. “It is my gift to all the people that want to do equitation – whether it’s an adult-amateur who wants to learn more, or a junior planning to go east, or a parent who wants to know more about the discipline,” she said. “I’m looking for it to be something enjoyable and educational; something that people can walk away from saying, ‘Wow, that was a great experience. I want to do it again.’” Maskrey-Segesman noted that Healey was instrumental in discussing ideas throughout the development and in coordinating this first year’s high profile judges. Notably, Traurig will be

judging the ASPCA Maclay Medal Final at The National Horse Show in November. Phase One will consist of a Hunter Derby type track set at 3’3” designed by Healey and Mauricio Garcia. The two judges will produce one score that will be announced in addition to providing commentary that will be logged and shared with each competitor upon the conclusion of the phase. The second phase in the evening will feature a video presentation: “Equitation - an American Tradition of Excellence” followed by a Q&A between the judges, trainers, and riders. Tonya Johnston will also present “Mental Preparation for Medal Finals.” Scores of 60 or higher will be invited to Phase Three, in which they will once again jump a Hunter Derby style course. Johnston will be available to riders during the course walk and throughout this phase for counseling and strategic planning. Similarly to Phase One, scores will be announced and notes taken. Upon adding the scores from the first and third phases together, the top 6 riders will be called back for additional testing. Work-off scores will not be announced - simply noted on the comment card in addition to more comments. A press conference open to all will follow the additional testing during which the judges will comment on the final round, work-off, and final placings. Blenheim EquiSports is thrilled to offer this threephase opportunity to equitation riders and trainers. For further details, visit showpark.com for the Summer Prize List. Note that stalls will sell out quickly, so make your summer show plans soon!
