Transfer charge ‘disgusting’

By Chris Tobin Charging $145 for a patient to be transferred less than 100 metres from Wairau Hospital to Hospice Marlborough is “appalling, disgusting and ethically wrong,” says Blenheim woman Marita Winstanley. Mrs Winstanley said she was reluctant to speak out about the matter but so many Blenheim people were upset about the charge it was time someone did. “I’m doing this because my friend just lost her son. She said one of the worst things of the whole nightmare was getting rung early in the morning by the hospital to find out if they (the parents) could pay $145 to move him from A and E to the hospice. “I think it’s immoral.” She said St John who did the transfer and made the charge were becoming unpopular because of it. Mrs Winstanley said five years ago she and hospital staff had transferred her mother from the hospital to the hospice and no charge was imposed. Continued page 2

By Chris Tobin St John has apologised and refunded a $145 fee it charged a Blenheim family for transporting their son less than 100 metres from Wairau Hospital to Hospice Marlborough. This follows a story The Sun published on March 22 in which Blenheim woman Marita Winstanley said she was appalled and disgusted with the way her friend had been treated. The hospital had rung early in the morning to find out whether the family could pay St John $145 to move her son from A and E to the hospice. St John billed the family for this amount. “It's settled for my friend and her son and it should be settled for anyone else in the future,” Mrs Winstanley said. “If not I want to know about it. “My friend said if it had been a standard $80 charge and if they had not been rung the same day to say her son would die it wouldn't have been so bad.” Continued page 2

‘If it’s legal, I’ll sell it’ By Chris Tobin Owner of Blenheim store Boots’n’All, Andy Hall, who sells legal synthetic cannabis products, believes the public are getting only half the story regarding them. “People are calling any synthetic cannabis K2; that’s incorrect. The only one of our smoking blend products causing issues is K2 Black which we’ve agreed to no longer stock.” K2 Black will be banned nationally from May 9. Body recovered Police and search and rescue volunteers searching for missing Nelson woman Jasmine Taringamoa Gotty recovered her body from the Pelorus River shortly after 2pm on Wednesday. Miss Gotty, aged 24, has been formally identified and her next of kin notified. A post mortem examination was conducted yesterday morning. Her body was discovered downstream of the Pelorus bridge near Totara Flat. The site was blessed by a local kaumätua. Police investigation into the circumstances surrounding Miss Gotty’s death are continuing. They thanked the Marlborough Search and Rescue volunteers for their assistance.

Special Olympics fundraising day By Kat Duggan The Marlborough Special Olympics Community teamed up with Specsavers Blenheim yesterday, to raise funds for local Special Olympians. The funds raised will be used to help get the Marlborough special Olympians to the National Summer Games in Dunedin, in late November this year. Specsavers got on board for the cause, hosting a fundraising day, with a two for one barbeque deal, three raffles, including one for two pairs of Specsavers glasses, and a Jellybean Guessing game. Staff at the optometrist store got in the spirit of the day, dressing up in 1960’s themed clothes, and all funds from services including cleans, repairs, fittings and adjustments on Thursday would also be donated to the local special Olympians.

A third Marlborough man also graduated from the 2013/01 Air Force recruit course on Friday, April 19. Jason Pilar was born in the Phillipines, however he has lived in Picton since 2005, where he attended Queen Charlotte College for some of his high school years. Mr Pilar started his trade training in Avionics on Monday.

Harrington’s brewery is yet to decide whether it is going to open a permanent bar in the old Podium building on Market Street, in Blenheim. A spokesperson for the Christchurch-based brewery, John Bentley, said it was still early days for the business, who are currently gauging interest in the building. “We haven’t decided [if we’re going to stay here], it’s early days, so we don’t know yet,” he said. Mr Bentley said the bar, which has been running in the earthquake-prone building since March, has had average success so far. Harrington’s owner, John Harrington, said they were going to give it some time, and talk to the owner of the building, Axel 2000 about rental prices, before making a decision. The current building will be demolished on July 1, and replaced with a new building, which was also going to house two retail sites.

Ever since Rogernomics deregulated and handed over control of most of NZ's big assets to rich fat cats like Michael Fay who just got richer, the care and safety of workers has lagged behind. Ordinary workers have been suffering ever since, in the pocket and health wise. Pike River, Cave Creek. Remember them. They're examples of cost cutting which cost lives. This week forestry workers had a

big service for those who had been killed in their industry. Since 2008, 23 workers have been killed in this industry in New Zealand.Only two days before this service, a forestry worker had been killed up round Rotorua by a falling tree. Junk mail Dear Ed, I am wondering if there are any rules and/or penalties regarding no circulars or no junk mail signs on letter boxes. I emailed one real estate agent who I saw delivering in my letter box, and said that no circulars included advertising from them – he emailed back asking which house I lived in so he wouldn’t put a sold flier he was about to distribute and I told him – just look for the letter box with the no circulars sign on it. A couple of days later there was a flier from this guy. Today we received another real estate flier in our letter box from another real estate company. I was wondering how many others with the same sign on their letter boxes are also getting annoyed

with this. Are there rules and/or penalties around this issue? April a month of two halves Apr i l 2013 was a month of extremes, in terms of sunshine hours and rain, according to Plant & Food scientist Rob Agnew. Mr Agnew described the month as having two distinct halves, between April 1-15, and April 16-30. The first half of the month recorded average sunshine hours and temperature and well below average rainfall, while the second half was overcast with well below average sunshine, well above average rainfall. 94% of the months total 102.5mm of rain fell between April 16 and 30,

with total rainfall for the month being 199% of the long-term average for April of 51.4 mm. April recorded 153.2 h o u r s sunshine for April, 81% of the long-term average for April, of 188.1 hours, 61% of the months total sunshine hours were recorded from April 1-15. The mean temperature for the month was 1.3°C above the longterm average for the month, at 14.7°C, days were warmer, and nights cooler during the first half of the month.

Betty McNabb- fisheries advocate Betty McNabb, one of Marlborough's foremost advocates for the Marlborough Sounds, its recreational fishing and sensible fisheries management, recently passed away. A member of the Marlborough Recreational Fishers Association, she along with another stalwart Des Boyce, were made life members at the last annual meeting of the organisation. Des Boyce said Betty’s contribution was immense. “Betty’s outstanding contribution to the marine environment and fisheries management of the Marlborough Sounds is an inspiration to us all,” he said. Betty was the Pelorus Boating Club’s fisheries officer and representative for many years. She was a foundation member, past committee member and life member of the Pelorus Boating Club. This led to her representing

recreational fishers' interests on many committees. She was a foundation member of the Ministry of Fisheries’ Top Recreation Forum and for many years represented Marlborough on it. A long-time member of TASFISH Betty also served for many years on the Ministry’s Liaison Committee, Scallop Enhancement Company Committee and the ministry’s Ma-

rine Farm Advisory Committee. In late 2002 Betty was elected to a Marlborough fishery steering committee which eventually led to the formation of the Marlborough District Council’s supported group called ‘Soundfish inc’. “Her fisheries experience and general knowledge of the MS was an invaluable contribution in the formation of Soundfish,” recalled Des Boyce. Betty made countless submissions to government fishing management matters and Resource Management Act marine farming applications, personally attending many hearings to present her submission. On the very recent and controversial King Salmon application she was making her views known. Yet Betty was retiring not seeking accolades and just wanting to get recreational fishing fairly treated. Vibrant violas With the nights starting to get longer and the temperatures dropping, it feels like autumn has finally arrived. And with a new season only a few weeks away, now’s a great time to plan your winter garden. Why not embrace the winter blues (and yellows and creams and apricots...) by choosing violas? Violas do, as the name suggests, come in violet, but also a whole load of other great colours and combinations, which will brighten up any garden over the colder months.

They have a love of wide-open spaces so they’re perfect for growing along your crazy paving or patio. You’ll also often see them in hanging baskets. And with the rain that’s finally arrived in some parts of the country, and the still warm temperatures, it’s a perfect time to plant. These petite plants like pots, so why not grow them around the outside of your potted shrubs or citrus trees? Just make sure you use a good potting mix to provide all the nutrients they need. Nurture their love of space and, in particular, good air circulation, by keeping your pots away from places like under the eaves of your house. This will help prevent them getting downy mildew. Violas also look fantastic in borders around spring bulbs or roses – particularly as the roses go dormant and lose their leaves. Once you’ve decided on the perfect spot to plant, simply dig in a balanced fertiliser, such as nitrophoska blue. Then plant your seedlings in small holes, about 20cm apart. Your vibrant violas should bloom in about four to six weeks after planting. Once they’ve arrived, it’s a good idea to pick off the dead heads to encourage them to flower longer.

Too good to let go The Vanden Plas Princess 1100 was launched in 1963 as a luxury variant of the BMC ADO16 (British Motor Company, Amalgamated Drawing Office project number 16). Production of the Princess 1100 and subsequent 1275 and 1300 models ended in 1974 with 43,741 examples produced. One of these examples is at Omaka Classic Cars and belonged to Marlborough family, the Latters. Mrs Moana (Mona) Latter purchased the car brand new on a trip to the UK in the late 60’s and it was then shipped to her in Kaikoura. Mrs Latter’s grandson, Tim, remembers the car well. “She was a great driver – never slow. I remember her helping us move house from Kincaid to Kekerengu with her car loaded up and she was right up behind me all the way!” Tim says that his grandmother was a real car enthusiast, something that Noel Enright, salesman for High Street Motors knew only too well. “Noel would come and see her every couple of years to sell her a new car. My father didn’t like that much!” In the mid-seventies, the recently launched Honda Civic caught Mona’s attention and she called up Leo McKendry of High Street Motors to see what he’d give her for the Vanden Plas as a trade against a new Civic. After agreeing a price on the phone, Leo drove the new Civic to Kaikoura and drove the Vanden Plas back to Blenheim. About half way home he decided to keep the car alongside a few other interesting models he’d acquired. Mona lived to 101 and drove up to the age of 94, when she voluntarily gave up. For her last twenty years she lived with her sister who lived to the age of 103. They shared a cottage on the family’s farm in Kaikoura with a permanent companion who took take care of them. Her three sons, John, Richard and Edward,

who farmed a third of the property each, never imagined they would be paying the upkeep on the cottage for so many years! (Edward was an MP and represented the Marlborough electorate from 1975 to 1978 when he retired due to ill-health. He is the author of ‘Marching Onward’- a history of the 2nd Battalion (Canterbury, Nelson, Marlborough, West Coast) Royal

New Zealand Infantry Regiment, 1845-1992 and The Battalion, published in 1992 about the Nelson Battalion of Militia). Mona did The Press crossword every day of her life until the last few months. She and her daughter would race to call each other every morning depending on who had finished it first. The Princess Vanden Plas was purchased

from Leo MeKendry by Ron Stewart in the late nineties and is one of about 60 cars currently on display at Omaka Classic Cars. The collection showcases vehicles from the 1950’s to the 1980’s – a time of carefree, wild, individual design oozing with charisma, chrome and large grilles and offers an unmissable insight into both Marlborough and New Zealand motoring.

Boys' college focuses on safety

SI sheep dog trials start Monday

Marlborough Boys' College held a farm bike safety course recently. Peter Kemp, the college's Gateway coordinator, said a number of short courses had been held this year to prepare students for employment. “Not only do they enhance their employment prospects but it is hoped it will reduce the number of accidents on the job as well as during leisure activities. “Preparing students for the workplace is part of our job and we want them to curb the boys’ instincts to take risks,” said Mr Kemp. “We take safety seriously”. The country’s leading shepherds and sheep dogs are coming to Marlborough to compete in the Tux South Island Championship sheep dog trials starting on Monday. Nearly 300 shepherds and 450 dogs will be in the championships which run from Monday through to Friday. The championships will be held at Meadowbank Station on Meadowwbank Rd off Taylor Pass Rd. Marlborough ploughmen performed well in the New Zealand Ploughing Championships held at Lincoln recently. Ash Murdoch placed fifth overall in the vintage NZ championship. In the CASE IH conventional ploughing Ian Woolley finshed second overall. On the first day stubble ploughing section he was equal first on the same points with M. Dillon and on the second day in the grass section he was sixth. This Saturday a Silver Plough qualifying event will be held at Woolley's property on Craven's Road from 11am to 3pm. The winner will represent Marlborough at the NZ 2014 final which will be held in Marlborough. Preparations are well under way for the vintage and horse team ploughing event to Straight furrows: Ian Woolley competing in the NZ ploughing championships at be held in Marlborough on May 18/19.
