Transfer charge ‘disgusting’

By Chris Tobin Charging $145 for a patient to be transferred less than 100 metres from Wairau Hospital to Hospice Marlborough is “appalling, disgusting and ethically wrong,” says Blenheim woman Marita Winstanley. Mrs Winstanley said she was reluctant to speak out about the matter but so many Blenheim people were upset about the charge it was time someone did. “I’m doing this because my friend just lost her son. She said one of the worst things of the whole nightmare was getting rung early in the morning by the hospital to find out if they (the parents) could pay $145 to move him from A and E to the hospice. “I think it’s immoral.” She said St John who did the transfer and made the charge were becoming unpopular because of it. Mrs Winstanley said five years ago she and hospital staff had transferred her mother from the hospital to the hospice and no charge was imposed. Continued page 2

By Chris Tobin St John has apologised and refunded a $145 fee it charged a Blenheim family for transporting their son less than 100 metres from Wairau Hospital to Hospice Marlborough. This follows a story The Sun published on March 22 in which Blenheim woman Marita Winstanley said she was appalled and disgusted with the way her friend had been treated. The hospital had rung early in the morning to find out whether the family could pay St John $145 to move her son from A and E to the hospice. St John billed the family for this amount. “It's settled for my friend and her son and it should be settled for anyone else in the future,” Mrs Winstanley said. “If not I want to know about it. “My friend said if it had been a standard $80 charge and if they had not been rung the same day to say her son would die it wouldn't have been so bad.” Continued page 2

By Kat Duggan Star Dance Academy is holding a ‘Bak 2 Skool’ party for 11 to 17-year-olds tonight, which has been entirely organised by the young dancers at the academy. The dancers were given the challenge of organising a local event on Monday, by academy founder and international director, Stayz Raukawa, as a part of the Star Dance Academy Leadership training week. The group of about 20 12 to 16-year-old dancers came up with the idea of organising a disco, and then set about organising and promoting the event. “We didn’t know we would be running an event, Stayz told us on Monday, and we had to do Megan Powell, front centre left, and Gemma Lewis, front centre right, have been working with the all the organising and promot- rest of the Star Dance Leadership Camp dancers this week to organise tonights back to school disco. ing,” said young leader Megan Powell, 16. St John apologises for error Continued from page 1 The apology and refunding were made by St John's operations manager in Tasman, James McMeekin. Asked why he had apologised, Mr McMeekin replied: “Because there was an error; there's a clear misunderstanding where charges go. In this instance a wrong code for billing was used and sent out, this has since been waived along with an apology been given.” He said he was in talks with

the hospice and hospital regarding charges for transferring terminally ill patients. “Someone has to pay but the question is who. When you look at the movement of terminal patients there are nine variations.” He said the $145 charge was “incorrectly coded”, but there would still have been a charge. “Part charges to patients or health care providers are made by St John to help cover a shortfall in funding” Mrs Winstanley said Mr Mc-

Meekin had contacted her. “He contacted me in response to the public attention and bad publicity; they were getting lots of calls and emails. “He couldn't justify or give details of how their charge comes about.” Mrs Winstanley has laid a complaint with the Nelson Marlbrough District Health Board complaints committee concerning her friend's experience. She is still awaiting a response.

Dreads to come off Blenheim woman Amber Win says she is not nervous about former All Black Leon MacDonald cutting off her dreadlocks tomorrow, which she has been growing for 17 years. She will be shaving them off tomorrow at the Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000, at 4.45pm, as a fundraiser for the Marlborough Child Cancer Foundation.

‘If it’s legal, I’ll sell it’ By Chris Tobin Owner of Blenheim store Boots’n’All, Andy Hall, who sells legal synthetic cannabis products, believes the public are getting only half the story regarding them. “People are calling any synthetic cannabis K2; that’s incorrect. The only one of our smoking blend products causing issues is K2 Black which we’ve agreed to no longer stock.” K2 Black will be banned nationally from May 9. Mr Hall was annoyed by comments made in Wednesday’s Sun by youth worker Roy Ramsey regarding K2 who, to Mr Hall’s knowledge, had not been in his shop for a number of years. “The people who come to us for these products are adults with Andy Hall with some of his legal high products. photo ID. They buy them so they can enjoy them without breaking the law. “We call them (synthetic cannabis) smoking nabinol), the illegal component of cannabis.” Mr Hall said he had stocked synthetic cannabis blends. Yes, they contain synthetic cannaboids but they do not contain THC (Tetrahydrocan- for 15 years, either as tablets or smoking blends.

“I give them (the public) the choice of a legal substance over illegal substances. “A large number of our customers use these without ill effects and I deal with a large number. If customers follow our advice of how much to use and do not mix it with alcohol or prescription drugs, they’re alright. “Of all the customers we’ve sold to, only an infinitesimal number have come back saying they’ve had side effects.” Mr Hall said synthetic cannabis was not designed for everyday use and he enforced an R18 rule in the area of his shop where the products were sold. “I’m 100 percent behind the Government’s decision to require products to be tested to be safe; that’s a good thing.” Mr Hall said alcohol was having a far more devastating effect on society than synthetic cannabis. “For me it’s about offering a product as an alternative; as long as it’s legal we’ll sell it until, if or when, the Government bans the stock.”

Body recovered Police and search and rescue volunteers searching for missing Nelson woman Jasmine Taringamoa Gotty recovered her body from the Pelorus River shortly after 2pm on Wednesday. Miss Gotty, aged 24, has been formally identified and her next of kin notified. A post mortem examination was conducted yesterday morning. Her body was discovered downstream of the Pelorus bridge near Totara Flat. The site was blessed by a local kaumätua. Police investigation into the circumstances surrounding Miss Gotty’s death are continuing. They thanked the Marlborough Search and Rescue volunteers for their assistance.

Special Olympics fundraising day By Kat Duggan The Marlborough Special Olympics Community teamed up with Specsavers Blenheim yesterday, to raise funds for local Special Olympians. The funds raised will be used to help get the Marlborough special Olympians to the National Summer Games in Dunedin, in late November this year. Specsavers got on board for the cause, hosting a fundraising day, with a two for one barbeque deal, three raffles, including one for two pairs of Specsavers glasses, and a Jellybean Guessing game. Staff at the optometrist store got in the spirit of the day, dressing up in 1960’s themed clothes, and all funds from services including cleans, repairs, fittings and adjustments on Thursday would also be donated to the local special Olympians.

A third Marlborough man also graduated from the 2013/01 Air Force recruit course on Friday, April 19. Jason Pilar was born in the Phillipines, however he has lived in Picton since 2005, where he attended Queen Charlotte College for some of his high school years. Mr Pilar started his trade training in Avionics on Monday.

Purchase offer being considered

By Chris Tobin One possible buyer has come forward to purchase the Marlborough Express building and land on Arthur St, Blenheim, and others have expressed verbal interest. Kelvin Fowler of Fowler Homes and Mainland Residential Ltd said he believed his offer was the only one received by the owners Fairfax NZ when the sale deadline ended on Tuesday. “I’ve put my expression of interest in and we’ve given them five working days to come back to us with yes or no.” However, the real estate agent handling the sale, Grant Baxter, said there had been other interested parties. “Verbal interest has been shown both in Blenheim and outside. I’d rather say negotiations are going on. It’s a bit sensitive.” He said the matter was now “in Fairfax’s court” and they were considering options. However, to Mr Fowler’s knowledge his was the only serious offer received which he found surprising since the building and land had been advertised for sale nationwide. “We’d demolish the building and put it into residential. It’s already zoned residential.” He said demolition would be expensive. “Getting rid of materials is where the expense comes.”

Early predictions of an outstanding vintage have proven true for Brancott Estate, the pioneers of the original Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. They have successfully completed harvest ahead of Autumn rain, and with fruit that bears all the characteristics of the region. “The season has been so dry until now and this has delivered a sensational vintage for Marlborough” said Patrick Materman, chief winemaker for Brancott Estate. “While we’ve enjoyed the sunshine, it hasn’t been a particularly warm season, tracking around the long-term average in terms of growing degree days. “This, combined with the lack of rain, is a real positive for vineyards. The dry conditions mean pristine fruit development and allow us to make harvest decisions based on optimal flavour development, while the relatively cool temperatures ensure the aromatic expression and balance of natural acidity that has made Marlborough famous.”

While still going through ferment, Mr Materman said Brancott expected some rich and flavoursome wines to develop from 2013. “Sauvignon Gris also excelled in the cool, dry, sunny conditions and Pinot Noir looks tremendous after a long, even ripening period which has resulted in great colour development and fruit maturity.”

Harrington’s brewery is yet to decide whether it is going to open a permanent bar in the old Podium building on Market Street, in Blenheim. A spokesperson for the Christchurch-based brewery, John Bentley, said it was still early days for the business, who are currently gauging interest in the building. “We haven’t decided [if we’re going to stay here], it’s early days, so we don’t know yet,” he said. Mr Bentley said the bar, which has been running in the earthquake-prone building since March, has had average success so far. Harrington’s owner, John Harrington, said they were going to give it some time, and talk to the owner of the building, Axel 2000 about rental prices, before making a decision. The current building will be demolished on July 1, and replaced with a new building, which was also going to house two retail sites.

Fish On Drains Dear Ed, April 12th - “Fish On Drains Challenge.” Great photo of cooperation between schools! Congratulations St Mary's Envirogroup and Marlborough Boys' College who will pass on the challenge to hammer blue fish on top of drains to remind us to take rubbish home and not let it drop for it ends up in the drains. Marlborough Girls' College is the next to be challenged. Marlborough District Council you deserve credit for the idea and to Springlands

School hammering success. Our great environment needs our help. Drains free of rubbish means rivers have fine fish and seas are less polluted. Can we pick up those rubber bands on pavements? That will stop them being wrapped around gills, or swallowed by fish. Before putting a plastic bag in a public bin knot it around the middle to help it to resist the wind. Fine future enviro carers. Beth Sowden, Blenheim

Worker safety Dear Ed, Why don't the media write more and put on TV more about worker safety? Ever since Rogernomics deregulated and handed over control of most of NZ's big assets to rich fat cats like Michael Fay who just got richer, the care and safety of workers has lagged behind. Ordinary workers have been suffering ever since, in the pocket and health wise. Pike River, Cave Creek. Remember them. They're examples of cost cutting which cost lives. This week forestry workers had a

big service for those who had been killed in their industry. Since 2008, 23 workers have been killed in this industry in New Zealand.Only two days before this service, a forestry worker had been killed up round Rotorua by a falling tree. What a bloody disgrace. Imagine if 23 politicians had been killed in the line of their work! Makes sense for ordinary workers to head for Australia. Better pay and better work conditions. Bushman

Junk mail Dear Ed, I am wondering if there are any rules and/or penalties regarding no circulars or no junk mail signs on letter boxes. I emailed one real estate agent who I saw delivering in my letter box, and said that no circulars included advertising from them – he emailed back asking which house I lived in so he wouldn’t put a sold flier he was about to distribute and I told him – just look for the letter box with the no circulars sign on it. A couple of days later there was a flier from this guy. Today we received another real estate flier in our letter box from another real estate company. I was wondering how many others with the same sign on their letter boxes are also getting annoyed

with this. Are there rules and/or penalties around this issue? Philbert Ed’s note: According to the Marketing Association, there are no rules regarding letter box signs as such, however there is a National Code of Practice for the Distribution of Unaddressed Mail, which was introduced in 2006. A member of the Marlborough Recreational Fishers Association, she along with another stalwart Des Boyce, were made life members at the last annual meeting of the organisation. Des Boyce said Betty’s contribution was immense. “Betty’s outstanding contribution to the marine environment and fisheries management of the Marlborough Sounds is an inspiration to us all,” he said. Betty was the Pelorus Boating Club’s fisheries officer and representative for many years. She was a foundation member, past committee member and life member of the Pelorus Boating Club. This led to her representing

recreational fishers' interests on many committees. She was a foundation member of the Ministry of Fisheries’ Top Recreation Forum and for many years represented Marlborough on it. A long-time member of TASFISH Betty also served for many years on the Ministry’s Liaison Committee, Scallop Enhancement Company Committee and the ministry’s Ma-

rine Farm Advisory Committee. In late 2002 Betty was elected to a Marlborough fishery steering committee which eventually led to the formation of the Marlborough District Council’s supported group called ‘Soundfish inc’. “Her fisheries experience and general knowledge of the MS was an invaluable contribution in the formation of Soundfish,” recalled Des Boyce. Betty made countless submissions to government fishing management matters and Resource Management Act marine farming applications, personally attending many hearings to present her submission. On the very recent and controversial King Salmon application she was making her views known. Yet Betty was retiring not seeking accolades and just wanting to get recreational fishing fairly treated. Gardening

Vibrant violas With the nights starting to get longer and the temperatures dropping, it feels like autumn has finally arrived. And with a new season only a few weeks away, now’s a great time to plan your winter garden. Why not embrace the winter blues (and yellows and creams and apricots...) by choosing violas? Violas do, as the name suggests, come in violet, but also a whole load of other great colours and combinations, which will brighten up any garden over the colder months.

They have a love of wide-open spaces so they’re perfect for growing along your crazy paving or patio. You’ll also often see them in hanging baskets. And with the rain that’s finally arrived in some parts of the country, and the still warm temperatures, it’s a perfect time to plant. These petite plants like pots, so why not grow them around the outside of your potted shrubs or citrus trees? Just make sure you use a good potting mix to provide all the nutrients they need. Nurture their love of space and, in particular, good air circulation, by keeping your pots away from places like under the eaves of your house. This will help prevent them getting downy mildew. Violas also look fantastic in borders around spring bulbs or roses – particularly as the roses go dormant and lose their leaves. Once you’ve decided on the perfect spot to plant, simply dig in a balanced fertiliser, such as nitrophoska blue. Then plant your seedlings in small holes, about 20cm apart. Your vibrant violas should bloom in about four to six weeks after planting. Once they’ve arrived, it’s a good idea to pick off the dead heads to encourage them to flower longer.

May Gardening Tips

Edible flowers Did you know as well as being pretty, many flowers are pretty tasty too? People have been growing and eating flowers for centuries. In fact the parts we usually eat of broccoli and cauliflower are actually large flower heads. Most of the things to watch out for when eating flowers apply to eating any plants, but it’s always worth being careful. So before you tuck into a blossoming meal, read these tips: Don’t harvest any flowers that might have been exposed to animals (particularly dogs and cats). Don’t eat flowers from the side of the roads - they might have been exposed to carbon monoxide from cars and trucks Don’t eat any flowers that look like

Don’t eat flowers from any areas (like public parks) where you don’t know what they might have been exposed to. If you’re not sure whether a flower is edible or not, DON’T eat it. Redeveloped campus to help girls achieve Rangi Ruru Girls’ School is consistently in the top 3% of New Zealand schools for academic achievement. Importantly we add value to each individual’s achievement – helping girls achieve their personal goals. To help foster this learning environment, Rangi Ruru is undertaking an exciting and ambitious campus redevelopment. ‘Project Blue Sky’ is a significant redevelopment of the entire 10 acre site, creating a learning environment designed specifically for girls. By the end of October this year we will have opened a new science building comprised of seven dedicated

science laboratories; a new library and IT hub; and a new student services building. By the February 2014 we will have added new music, dance and drama buildings. If you would like to hear more about our campus redevelopment, Julie Moor, Principal of Rangi Ruru is hosting an informal occasion in Blenheim. These small gatherings are one way we are connecting with our communities outside of Christchurch. Julie will be talking about boarding, the advantages of single sex education, and academic achievement in a girls’ school.

Too good to let go The Vanden Plas Princess 1100 was launched in 1963 as a luxury variant of the BMC ADO16 (British Motor Company, Amalgamated Drawing Office project number 16). Production of the Princess 1100 and subsequent 1275 and 1300 models ended in 1974 with 43,741 examples produced. One of these examples is at Omaka Classic Cars and belonged to Marlborough family, the Latters. Mrs Moana (Mona) Latter purchased the car brand new on a trip to the UK in the late 60’s and it was then shipped to her in Kaikoura. Mrs Latter’s grandson, Tim, remembers the car well. “She was a great driver – never slow. I remember her helping us move house from Kincaid to Kekerengu with her car loaded up and she was right up behind me all the way!” Tim says that his grandmother was a real car enthusiast, something that Noel Enright, salesman for High Street Motors knew only too well. “Noel would come and see her every couple of years to sell her a new car. My father didn’t like that much!” In the mid-seventies, the recently launched Honda Civic caught Mona’s attention and she called up Leo McKendry of High Street Motors to see what he’d give her for the Vanden Plas as a trade against a new Civic. After agreeing a price on the phone, Leo drove the new Civic to Kaikoura and drove the Vanden Plas back to Blenheim. About half way home he decided to keep the car alongside a few other interesting models he’d acquired. Mona lived to 101 and drove up to the age of 94, when she voluntarily gave up. For her last twenty years she lived with her sister who lived to the age of 103. They shared a cottage on the family’s farm in Kaikoura with a permanent companion who took take care of them. Her three sons, John, Richard and Edward,

Tim Latter in his grandmother Mona’s old Vanden Plas Princess 1100

who farmed a third of the property each, never imagined they would be paying the upkeep on the cottage for so many years! (Edward was an MP and represented the Marlborough electorate from 1975 to 1978 when he retired due to ill-health. He is the author of ‘Marching Onward’- a history of the 2nd Battalion (Canterbury, Nelson, Marlborough, West Coast) Royal

New Zealand Infantry Regiment, 1845-1992 and The Battalion, published in 1992 about the Nelson Battalion of Militia). Mona did The Press crossword every day of her life until the last few months. She and her daughter would race to call each other every morning depending on who had finished it first. The Princess Vanden Plas was purchased

from Leo MeKendry by Ron Stewart in the late nineties and is one of about 60 cars currently on display at Omaka Classic Cars. The collection showcases vehicles from the 1950’s to the 1980’s – a time of carefree, wild, individual design oozing with charisma, chrome and large grilles and offers an unmissable insight into both Marlborough and New Zealand motoring.

Boys' college focuses on safety

SI sheep dog trials start Monday

Marlborough Boys' College held a farm bike safety course recently. Peter Kemp, the college's Gateway coordinator, said a number of short courses had been held this year to prepare students for employment. “Not only do they enhance their employment prospects but it is hoped it will reduce the number of accidents on the job as well as during leisure activities. “Preparing students for the workplace is part of our job and we want them to curb the boys’ instincts to take risks,” said Mr Kemp. “We take safety seriously”. So far this year there has also been a safety course on quad bike safety, From left: Isaac Godsiff, Kerry Miles the Agribusiness tutor, Troy Mathieindustrial safety and first aid. son and Nicholas Capill.

The country’s leading shepherds and sheep dogs are coming to Marlborough to compete in the Tux South Island Championship sheep dog trials starting on Monday. Nearly 300 shepherds and 450 dogs will be in the championships which run from Monday through to Friday. Marlborough Nelson Sheep Dog Trial Association president Paul Newton, of Havelock, said a lot of work was required to get the championships up and running. He said among the Marlborough contestants who

could figure highly in the huntaway were Mike Forsyth of Ward with his dog Chance; David McPherson, also Ward (Hobb) and Trevor Gibson, of Blenheim (Rusty). The championships will be held at Meadowbank Station on Meadowwbank Rd off Taylor Pass Rd. Judges in the various sections of the championships are: Long Head (Bruce Douglas, Otago), Short Head & Yard (Stuart Henson, Wairarapa/Southern HB), Zig Zag Huntaway (Rod Coulter, Southland), Straight Huntaway (Mark Haynes, Wanganui)

Kilted Kiwi becomes a Lion

Premier Rugby The Marlborough premier rugby draw for this Saturday is as follows: 12.50pm Harlequins v Moutere (Lansdowne Park 1); 2.35pm Awatere v Renwick (Seddon Domain); 2.35pm Central v Waitohi (Lansdowne Park 1).

Broken neck doesn’t stop McKendry Penrith league player, Kiwi Sam McKendry, played for nearly quarter of an hour with a broken neck on Monday night’s game against Parramatta. Preliminary scans have confirmed McKendry suffered a fracture of the C6 vertebrae during the first half of the game at Centrebet Stadium, after which he played on. McKendry will see a specialist on Friday to confirm the extent of the damage, which is thought to have him sidelined for a minimum of six weeks.

New Zealanders continue to bolster the ranks of overseas rugby teams. The latest in the long line is Sean Maitland who has been named in the British and Irish Lions to tour Australia. Maitland impressed me when he played for the Crusaders. He had size, speed and a good step. A lucky break could have given him a black jersey. Instead he went the way of others who became Kilted Kiwis – Sean Lineen, John Leslie, ‘Chainsaw’ Laney, Glenn Metcalfe and Gordon Simpson. And he has gone a significant step further and

become a Lion and now faces the interesting prospect of playing against his cousin, the controversial Quade Cooper, during the Oz tour. Maybe I over-estimated Maitland, but I thought when he left to take up a contract in Glasgow he was one who got away. Speaking of rugby, a player now nearing the end of his career (he’s 34) has been brought into the Makos squad for this season’s ITM Cup – big, bruising Samoan No 8 George Stowers. The announcement of his inclusion has been welcomed. It will be interesting to see how he

goes. Too often we’ve seen players trumpeted as coming wonders who end up not performing to the level expected . Meanwhile, there’s been more drug controversy over the Tasman in recent days with further allegations of sports people taking illegal performance enhancing drugs. Never heard of them before but apparently peptides are the latest illegal drug of choice. Besides elite athletes, body builders and people keen to hold back the clock and take some antiaging treatment have been known to use them. A report from Auckland

The event consisted of 12 races in four and a half days, starting on Monday April 22, going through until Friday April 26, with a late start on Thursday to mark Anzac day. The results of the local sailors were as follows: Gold Fleet: Taylor Burn 9th, Henry Gibbs 24th, Hamish Clark 29th, Alistair Gifford 31st, Callum Radford 37th, and Liese Belgrave 49th. Silver Fleet: Nico van Beek 5th, Nicholas Gardiner 6th,

says these peptides have also been seized by New Zealand Customs so it’s seems highly likely they’re being used by someone, somewhere around the country. But here in New Zealand the major sports organisations say that compared to what is happening in Australia, we’re squeaky Chris Tobin clean.
