Walkway washed out

Runner Lindsay Tilbury looks at the blown out section of walkway alongside the Taylor River

By Chris Tobin A section of the Taylor River walkway blown out by heavy overnight rain on Sunday night is part and parcel of being in a flood corridor, says the Marlborough District Council. Terry St John who is caretaker at the Blenheim Kart Club alerted the Sun to the three metres of track that had been gouged from the popular walkway which is greatly used by walkers, joggers and cyclists. “The big culvert pipe was blocked with rubbish and and it’s blown out again; the same thing happened six months ago. “In the old days guys would clean the drains out.” The council’s rivers and drainage engineering manager Geoff Dick said this part of the walkway had been gouged out in August last year also. Look good, feel better Marlborough women undergoing cancer treatment had the opportunity to “look good, feel better” on Monday, when a group of volunteers spent the day pampering them. The day included a lunch, and a make over by volunteers, who also coached the cancer sufferers on how to deal with the side effects of their treatment. Look Good Feel Better is a free service provided by volunteers, which aims to provide women who are undergoing cancer treatment with the tools they need to look good on the outside, and feel better on the inside. Attendees were taught how to apply make-up to help camouflage the loss of eyebrows and eyelashes, as well as skin fluctuations, and wig and turban use. The women were also given a gift bag of skin care and cosmetics, which are donated by the Cosmetic Toiletry and Fragrance Association of New Zealand. Look Good Feel Better is a registered charity which began in America in 1987, and relies on self funding and community donations to pamper over 3000 women in New Zealand each year. The charity is endorsed by the Cancer Society of New Zealand, and the Cosmetic Toiletry and Fragrance Association, who donate more than $2million per year.

Tasman rugby coach and former All Black Leon MacDonald cut off Amber’s dreadlocks before Alan Gibbons shaved her head in front of a large crowd. Amber had grown her dreadlocks for 17 years before having them shaved off for charity. There were plenty of nerves as the cutting began but afterwards Amber said, “It was totally worth it”. Floodwater blows out part of walkway Continued from page 1 “It’s the capacity of water through that lower section of the Wither Road extensions. “We had it all cleared out last August and it’s all maintained. It’s simply the water has exceeded the capacity of the culvert.” He said to install a bigger culvert was expensive and he added that these events had to be expected given that the land was part of the Taylor River flood corridor. Repairs would be undertaken during the next few days. Mr St John said he was concerned for the safety of the walkway’s users. “It took weeks to restore the last time and it’s a blind corner. “You get people coming through at night and guys ride there after work. I see their headlights coming down there.”

Quake near Kaikoura A 4.5-magnitude earthquake struck north of Kaikoura yesterday morning. The quake, which hit at 7.23am, was centred 25km north of the town at a depth of 26km. It was moderate in intensity, GNS Science reported

Post mortem completed

Marlborough Boys' College’s front field was flooded in Sunday night’s storm.

Lakeside at boys’ college Photo and story by Kat Duggan Being in a low lying area of town has proved painful for Marlborough Boys’ College once again, after students and staff were greeted with by a new lake after the holidays. Large volumes of rain which fell in the region on Sunday night and Monday morning caused the front field at the school to be entirely submerged in water. College deputy principal, Michael Heath, said it was not unusual for the field to get waterlogged, apparently due to the location of

the school. “I’ve been told that it’s because it’s one of the lowest points in town, and all the water runs down to this point,” he said. “It’s annoying because it means it can’t be used, but it clears pretty quickly.” Mr Heath said fixing the field was always on a list of things to do, but it would be an expensive operation. “It’s been waterlogged twice this year, but I’m not sure about [the last time] before that. To have the whole field under water is not an

annual event or anything.” The flooding of the field had disrupted the first XV, who were set to play on the field this weekend against Timaru’s Roncalli College, in the Press Cup competition. “It’s been really inconvenient for training, but with the forecast it looks like it [the field] will be okay for the game on Saturday,” Mr Heath said. The game kicks off at 12pm on Saturday. See Blenheim flood photos, page 14.

A wet, wild time in Marlborough By Kat Duggan Marlborough had a wet and wild night on Sunday, with rolling thunder and lightning, and more than 60mm of rain falling in some areas. Marlborough District Council assets and services manager, Mark Wheeler, said in the 12 hours to 10am on Monday morning, Blenheim had received 60mm of rain, with 66mm falling in areas just south of Blenheim. “Rainfall like that only happens between a

two and a 10 year period, so it was reasonably heavy,” Mr Wheeler said. “There has been some localised flooding around town. It hasn’t been a real major event, but just a nuisance really.” Blenheim chief fire officer, Rob Dalton, said the storm kept the Volunteer Fire Brigade busy in the early hours of Monday morning, with seven callouts from 3am. “It was a bit hard to pump water out of a garage when it’s pouring in just as quickly, it wasn’t very exciting stuff, we just went

and did what we could to help out,” he said. Mr Wheeler said the ponding was clearing pretty quickly, with the only major road disruption being on State Highway One, with slips between Blenheim and Seddon. According to the New Zealand Transport Association website, flooding and rock falls had caused the road between Welds Pass and Seddon, south of Blenheim, to be down to one lane on Monday morning, however by 4.30pm on Monday afternoon the road had been cleared.

The Government is to invest more money into organisations providing budgeting advice and support. “In recognition of the good work budgeting services do to help people manage their income, an extra $1.5 million has been allocated for 2013/14,” Paula Bennett, Minister for Social Develop-

Paula Bennett

ment Associate Minister of

Housing said. “The funding is in addition to $8.9 million provided by Government in 2012/13 and will relieve pressure on the sector in the short term,” said Mrs Bennett. This will be followed by a strategic review of the funding model for budgeting services in late 2013. MSD contracts with

152 budgeting services. “It is time for a review of the funding model for budgeting services, but in the meantime $1.5 million will relieve some of the pressures,” Mrs Bennett says. Applications open on Monday May 13 and close Friday May 24 with providers notified by May 31.

Call for shooters to act responsibly Some duck shooters should act more responsibly, Marborough Sounds resident Malcolm Adams believes. Mr Adams contacted the Sun to express his disappointment about an incident on a walking track at Anakiwa from the weekend. The duck shooting season started on Saturday. Mr Adams said on Sunday he and his wife went for a walk on the track and saw a man in a grey ute with a kayak on the top. This man pulled the back of the

vehicle down and got inside and drove away as Mr Adams came

on the scene with his wife and two dogs. A short distance away Mr Adams came across a dead swan, paradise duck and three other ducks that had been dumped over a bank. “I’m not accusing the man but it’s more to do what was done to these birds. Shooters shoot for food not for the fun of killing.” He said children and families went on the track and seeing the dead swan and other ducks was “not a good look.”

Runaway located in Wairau Valley A Southland teenager who ran away with a 50-year-old man has been found with him in Blenheim. Police called for public help to find Willow Perkins, 14, after she ran away from an Invercargill residence last Wednesday with 50-year-old Nightcaps man

John Barrett. It was the second time they had run away together. Willow and Mr Barrett had previously disappeared together for about two weeks, but she had voluntarily returned to her father’s house on April 27. Senior Sergeant Bruce Terry,

of Invercargill, said police had located the pair in the Wairau Valley, about 40km southwest of Blenheim, on Monday. They had been notified of Willow’s whereabouts by a member of the public. Inquiries into the matter were continuing.

Pay rise coming for mayor, councillors If re-elected in October's local body elections, Marlborough district mayor Alistair Sowman can expect a pay rise as will district councillors. The Remuneration Authority, which sets judges and central and local government politicians' salaries, has proposed a new system for councillors' salaries, which would see the salary set by the authority, rather than a pool from which individual councils draw on. Under this proposal, the mayoral salary would increase $4550 from $119,000 to $123,550. Mayor Sowman has $4284 deducted from his salary to cover any private use of a car provided as mayoral vehicle. Councillors' base salaries would rise $5000 from $28,000 to $33,000 a year. Councillors chairing committees

Alister Sowman

would increase from just under $42,000, to $49,500. Authority chairman John Errington said in the report the proposals came out of a two-year review. The recommendations would be implemented after the elections at the end of this year. The authority had yet to finalise

the salaries because it was still consulting on the amount councillors would receive for extra responsibilities, such as chairing committees. The Remuneration Authority, which sets the pay for city, district and regional councils, has increased the national pay pool by 8.9 per cent, meaning councillors in some councils would pocket rises of up to $16,000 after this year's elections. Local Government New Zealand chairman Lawrence Yule said elected officials were finding it increasingly difficult to hold down other employment. "If they're to give up other career options, or significant family life, or significant other things they're doing, then they do have to be properly remunerated."

Three caught in under-age sting Three retailers sold cigarettes to an under-aged volunteer in recent controlled purchase operations carried out in Nelson and Marlborough Nelson Marlborough Public Health Service (NMPHS) put 17 retailers to the test in operations carried out in Marlborough and Tasman earlier last week. Controlled purchase operations are conducted by Smoke-Free

Enforcement Officers using an underage volunteer to ensure tobacco retailers comply with the Smoke-free Environments Act 1990 which prohibits the sale of tobacco products to persons under 18 years of age. Public Health and Oral Health Service Manager, Stephanie Read said, “We are disappointed that we got three sales during this operation. All three sellers will be

sent an infringement notice with a maximum fee of $1000.” “Retailers are made aware of their legal obligations throughout the year so we are very saddened that some retailers still continue to sell to people under 18 years of age. “Our volunteers were 14 and 16 years of age, if asked they are required to be honest about their age. It would have been a simple matter of asking for ID.”

Rock, mineral club to celebrate The Marlborough Rock and Mineral Club Inc. will be celebrating its 40th anniversary next weekend. The club, which has over 50 members, holds regular field trips, and will be going to Totara flat on Sunday, where the club held its first ever trip. As well as the field trip, celebrations will begin on Friday, with a wine and cheese night, and Saturday with a dinner, and a time for members to share their stories of their time with the club.

“There’s been a lot of hard work by the members over the years, and the rock collection is museum quality. The members are very generous with their time and knowledge too,” said long time club member, Kath McIntyre. “Members now are benefiting from the hard work of older members, who put together a great clubroom, and the workshop,” she said. The club collects rocks and minerals from around all of New Zealand, as

well as internationally, and they also hold regular workshops in their work room, which houses grinders, drills and microscopes. Anyone interested in joining the club could go to the clubrooms, at 28 Arthur Baker Place, Blenheim, on a Sunday to enquire. The anniversary celebrations are open to anybody who wants to come along, however they are asked to contact Kath first, on 03 577 5218, by May 16.

Environmental Awards field days The Marlborough Environment Awards field days are underway, showcasing projects and innovation from locals dedicated to going the extra mile to protect the environment. Marlborough Environment Awards coordinator, Bev Doole, said the field days add value to the Environment Awards. “It’s a chance for the winners to show what they do and share their experience, and it’s a chance for the public to have a look behind the scenes and see the good things being done in Marlborough for the environment,” she said. The field days have been running since late April, with the next one being held today, beginning at 12.30pm, at the Onamalutu Reserve, featuring Marlborough Harvesting Ltd., who won the forestry award for overcoming many challenges to log a difficult site, while still protecting waterways and

native bush. Two field days would be hosted on the final day, next Wednesday, May 15, both showcasing innovation from local wineries to preserve the environment. From 9am until 12pm, Business Innovation Award Winners, Yealands Estate Wine would be showcasing their sustainability innovations in the vineyard and winery, as well as their extensive landscaping and plantings to enhance water-collection ponds. In the afternoon, from 1.30pm next Wednesday, Fromm Winery will be demonstrating how they grow quality grapes in a dry climate, with minimal irrigation, using techniques which won the winery the Winegrowing/Horticulture Award for 2013. All of the field days are free, but bookings are required. Small Novopay overpayments wiped

Steven Joyce

Minister Responsible for Novopay Steven Joyce yesterday announced the Ministry of Education will not be seeking to recover small overpayments to school staff that are uneconomic to recover. “In order to assist the recovery of the system and clearance of the overpayment backlog, I have taken

the pragmatic decision that the ministry should not seek to recover a number of smaller overpayments that would take up a lot of time for little benefit to any party,” Mr Joyce said. “Since Novopay went live in August last year there have been thousands of school staff around

the country that have received overpayments as a result of errors with the payroll system. “Recovering the smaller overpayments would’ve cost the Education Ministry more money than the amounts that have been overpaid and slow down the clearance of the backlog.”

King Salmon named runner-up New Zealand King Salmon has taken second place in a contest for The Worst Transnational Corporation operating in New Zealand. The ‘Roger Award’ contest named after politician Roger Douglas, architect of controversial economic policy Rogernomics in the 1980s, was organised by Campaign Against Foreign Control of Aotearoa (CAFCA) and GATT Watchdog, both Christchurch-based groups. At a function in Wellington last Wednesday, the Roger Award organisers named Taejin Fisheries as the 2012 winner because of its “cheap, unorganised slave labour”. King Salmon was named equal runner-up with Rio Tinto Alcan NZ Ltd, owner of the Tiwai Point Aluminium Smelter at Bluff. The judges said marine farms were problematic in an area like the Marlborough Sounds, as they were an industrial activity, generating noise, odour, traffic, lighting, damaging habitat, affecting water quality, and constituted a privatising of public water space”. Locals objected to its major expansion plans, which were prohibited by the Marlborough District Council; the Government sent the case to the newly created Environmental Protection Agency as a matter of “national significance”, and it gave the go ahead for half the requested new salmon farms. “This move to sabotage local democratic processes is a particularly insidious one,” said the judges.

Marlborough Youth Week success By Kat Duggan Marlborough has started national Youth Week well, with eight you organisations receiving $43,000 from the Canterbury Community Trust. One of the organisations, Foundation for Youth Development (FYD) Marlborough, will be using the money to continue to fund youth programme, Project K, and also get a new youth programme, Kiwi Can, up and running. FYD regional manager, Kelvin Watt, said the organisation had been ‘stoked’ by the donation. “We’re stoked with that [the donation], it’s a really great helping hand to run the programmes,” he said. The organisation would be running a “Drop Your Boss” fundraiser this Sunday, May 12, from 11am, where 16 local employers would be abseiling off the Alfred St Carpark Building, as part of Youth Week 2013. Mr Watt said the money raised this weekend will be added to the $15,000 donation from the

Canterbury Community Trust, to keep Project K, a 14 month programme targeting Yr 10 students with untapped potential, going in the region, and to kick start Kiwi Can, an energetic and interactive life skills and values based programme that has proven very successful in primary schools in other areas throughout the country. Canterbury Community Trust chief executive, Louise Edwards, said the applications received clearly show a commitment and dedication to ensuring the wellness of youth. “We were impressed with the range of ways organisations are tailoring their services to truly meet the changing needs of young people in Marlborough,” she said. Other Marlborough organisations which received donations were CANTEEN, Girl Guiding, Kaikoura Youth Council, The Boys Brigade, The Girls Brigade, Wairau Youth and Family Trust, and The Scout Association of New Zealand.

Focus on road safety this week

SPCA animals in town a success Marlborough SPCA bought the animals to town on Saturday, and the day was a success, with two offsite adoptions, and many donations. SPCA centre manager, Kate Horrey, said the organisation had found homes for two cats, and raised over $100 in donations during their four hours in the forum. “It was very successful, there was a lot of interest and feedback from people saying we should do it again,” she said. The SPCA is holding another offsite adoption this Saturday, at the Seddon supermarket.

Road Safety Week started on Monday and runs until Sunday, and Associate Transport Minister Michael Woodhouse is encouraging all road users to think about safe driving and to take extra care around cyclists and pedestrians. Road Safety Week NZ is promoted by the road safety charity BRAKE with the support of government agencies, and coincides with United Nations Global Road Safety Week that this year is dedicated to pedestrian safety. “It’s great to see government agencies working with the community to promote road safety, and Road Safety Week is a good example.” Mr Woodhouse said Road Safety Week also complemented the good work the Government was doing through the Safer Journeys Action Plan, which is seeing good results. “Road Safety Week comes as the 2013 road

Sun readers have their say... with the WORD on the Street. Q: Do you like the new light-proof Anchor milk bottle?

Charlene Anderson Blenheim

Pj Bibby Blenheim

Ant Franz Blenheim

Lyn McQuillan Blenheim

Sue Parish Blenheim

No, first of all you can’t tell what’s in them. They should have a little strip down the side so you can see what’s in there.

Yeah, there’s no real difference in the milk, as a barista we haven’t lost or gained anything through the new bottles.

No, you can’t see where your milk is for a start, and it’s triple the cost for recycling, and triple the cost to buy them, I had no complaints with the old ones.

It’s early days, but yes, I think I like them because they seem to be doing the job they are said to be doing, keeping the milk fresh and they are recyclable.

No, being in the cafe scene, you can’t see how much milk is in the bottles and when you’re busy you think you are picking up a full bottle, and it’s empty. We prefer the old bottles.

Global warming Dear Ed, My compliments on your report of Lord Monckton’s evening address on global warming. It was accurate and not slanted like the disparaging one in another newspaper. What is disturbing is the one-eyed zealotry exhibited by the adherents to

the faith of castastrophic anthropological global warming. They deny rational debate and name call with “deniers” and “sceptics” being their favourite verbal abuse! The fact is temperatures have not risen for 15 years. Ken Lloyd, Blenheim

Pumpkin thieves Dear Ed, Recently, there were a couple of articles in the papers of thieves stealing from the school childrens garden plots. Boy! I know how that feels. The Marlborough RSA Welfare grew a large pumpkin patch this season and last week, 1st May, much to my surprise, while nearby here were the neighbouring neighbours (a young blonde lady & partner with short-cut brown hair) both stealing the pumpkins to feed themselves, when they should have been for the welfare and needy of the RSA. The young man came back and asked “can I help you” as though I wasn’t meant to be there. To this I replied back and told him who the pumpkins belonged to and what

they were meant to be for, but that wasn’t to be as there were only about 1/2 a dozen greeny ones left. Personally, I feel these neighbours who help themselves (they know who they are) should turn around and give the RSA Welfare Fund a generous donation for what they did. Caught Red Handed

Dear Ed, I couldn’t believe how heavy the rain that fell on Sunday night was. As a newcomer to Blenheim I was amazed with how much flood water gathers in the main part of town down near the bridge not far from Raupo.

Emily Sandford Blenheim Yes, I’ve found that it makes the milk really nice and creamy, so for making coffee, yeah, it’s really nice.

This is the second time I have seen it like this in the last four or five weeks although it wasn’t as bad this time as it was on that earlier occasion. Why do the banks of the Taylor River overflow so much and so easily? Newcomer

Urban sprawl Dear Ed, In response to the ‘Urban Sprawl’ letter to the editor. I wish also to join the correspondents Tony Orman, Paul Ham, Ralph Mason, as I have made objections to,in the past, of the folly of Marlborough District Council (MDC) rezoning good farmland. It would appear that MDC are on a path of destruction - they destroyed a good toilet block, replaced it with a very inconvenient costly replacement, destroyed good Clubs of Marlborough grounds, made it into one shambolic mess, and to say nothing about the colossal expense by shifting trees, etc and the ongoing upkeep cost to the ratepayers. ( Also, ten years ago, MDC were paying out $500,000 per year to Consultants) O Lawrence Secretary, Marlborough Concerned Citizens Inc

Sucked in Dear Ed, It’s particularly sad the amount of people sucked in by Lord Monckton’s spreading of misinformation and blatant disregard for the environment. In Taranaki, he called wind farms a “fashion statement”, obviously clean, renewable energy is just a conspiracy manufactured to... who knows?! It can’t be good though! Tin foil hats everyone, stat! Monckton’s spouting of absolute rubbish on Radio NZ, and all his recycled arguments have been thoroughly debunked by respectable scientists with appropriate qualifications. If you are happy to blindly believe the ramblings of a hilariously controversial student of classical architecure, and it’s something you feel the need to share with others, don’t. PLEASE do some research and not spout the rubbish you heard from this charlatan. In response to Roger Coombes letter (May 3rd), polar bears are a protected species. In the very link you cited, the apparent increase of polar bear cubs was attributed to climate change! You only need to look at the WWF website to get a good picture on the threats polar bears are facing. Whether you “believe” in climate change or not (in spite of overwhelming scientific evidence), this is our country, our only planet, just shrugging your shoulders and saying “well this English git told us it wasn’t our fault” is short sighted and childish. We should be encouraging renewable resources, taking advantage of recycled products and utilising our real scientists recommendations and studies to create a more sustainable future. Sincerely, Matt Brown

one on one with the Sun

‘I keep driving myself’ Losing his right arm and right leg when he was a young man was a traumatic experience for Steve Tiplady but he has got on with life. Sun reporter Chris Tobin caught up with him. Life can change in a split second. For Steve Tiplady that happened back in the 1970s when he was 20, living in Lincoln and working for an engineering firm P & D Duncan Engineering in Sockburn, Christchurch. “I was really hard working and into the rural life, relief milking, haymaking, as well as having a fulltime job,” he recalled at his Spring Creek home. But that changed early one evening when a woman driver cut a corner and ploughed into Steve who was riding a motorbike. “I lost an arm on the car bonnet and a leg on the road,” he says. “It took me a year to get over it before I could pick up. You go through times where you didn’t respect your life. “My father gave up work to look after me and eventually we came out the other side.” The turning point was Steve’s getting involved with the Canterbury Paraplegic and Physically Disabled Association. “I was very lucky a friend believed in me; she took me under her wing and got me involved with the disability sector.” Paraplegic and disabled sport was then starting to gain a profile and Steve took up shooting with air weapons and competed in indoor bowls, swimming and table tennis. He mixed with prominent paralympians such as Roly Crichton and the late Graham Condon. “Then I got onto the committee, then I was president and then I got into the welfare side of it.” He also returned to work in an office job in Christchurch. However, it was not all plain sailing. He was made redundant. “Everyone thought I’d end up at the bottom of the barrel but I went into real estate. I was married by then and had one child with no secured income.” Selling real estate in the eastern suburbs of Christchurch based in New Brighton, he made a success of it. “I sold very well. They used to call me ‘the Harcourts miracle man’.” He bought a dairy as well and juggled running this business with selling houses and commerical properties. The work demands placed pressure on the

Jewellers of Distinction

marriage and after the couple lost a child through cot death, further strain was placed on the relationship. He and his wife separated. “I was married to a pager; I was never home.” He met Sandra, who lived in Marlborough, and this prompted his move to the region 17 years ago. They are still together and have a son. Steve sold advertising for Radio Marlborough for a period as well as for Community Diary and enjoyed the outdoors life in the region with boating, diving and fishing. Then he ended up working for Workbridge and the CCS. “I was supposed to do 38 hours (with Workbridge) but it blew out to 60 hours. If I see a need you can’t finish at 5pm.” He believed in gaining an understanding of a client and their needs – a time consuming process but one he says is vitally important. “People don’t care anymore. They’re just doing their job and they’re employing these people with doctorates who have no hands-on experience.” He became disillusioned working in government departments which seemed mainly interested in getting people off their books. And his health was not good. ‘I’ve got a lot of injuries through 30 years of being like this; I’ve a shoulder that won’t rotate. I’ve had a triple heart bypass. A lot of these ongoing issues forced me out of work three or four years ago.” These days he uses his knowledge of the disability sector, of dealing with departments such as ACC and Work and Income, to voluntarily help others who are asking, “what do I do, who do I see?” Health-wise Steve is battling pain a lot of the time. “I have real bad days but I’m fully functional. I won’t give up and sit in a wheelchair. “I keep driving myself.”

Being 100 percent locally owned and operated, Tony says staff can offer expert servicing of anything from radiators and cooling systems through to associated parts and accessories. And now that winter is here, the Radiator Services team is encouraging motorists to call in and have their antifreeze checked and heaters repaired before the cold really sets in. By buying locally, Radiator Services can guarantee their customers receive the right advice on what they need. “There are a lot of people who purchase parts over the internet, thinking they are getting a cheaper price. “But in some cases the parts are wrong, don’t fit or require further work which will cost more in the long run,” he says. For the right advice, personal service and professional guarantee on all their services, call in and see the team at Radiator Services today.

Quality and workmanship are not the only things that Cantwell Joinery & Window Centre of Blenheim prides itself in. “There is also the satisfaction of knowing that your business is locally owned and operated and has the backing of the community,” says owner Ian Cantwell. Don’t let the bed bugs bite Most children can remember their parents tucking them into bed at night and saying; “Sleep tight, don’t let the bed bugs bite”. The truth is, the bed bugs are probably biting as these tiny, wingless parasitic insects are becoming more and more common throughout New Zealand. The worrying thing is, many people may not be aware of the presence of bed bugs because they do not have a reaction to the bites. Bed bugs hide in cracks and crevices during the day before coming out at night to feed on blood. They are attracted to our body heat and carbon dioxide from our breath. When they bite, they inject their saliva which contains anaesthetic so we don’t feel it, although some people will wake up with itchy, inflamed and reddened marks on their skin. To rid your home of bedbugs, you will need to search for evidence of

bedbugs such as adult bugs (3-5mm), nymphs (small as 1mm), blood smears that look like tiny black ‘ticks’ or ‘crosses’. A1 Drycleaning and Laundry on High Street in Blenheim specialises in the killing and removing of bed bugs. Owners Lianne and Mike Budny provide an in-home service where they use specialised equipment to first test for bed bugs before killing and removing them from mattresses. The test involves placing a Ridamite treatment sample cloth on the mattress. Because this cloth is black you can see what is picked up off the mattress, including the bed bugs. “People are amazed at what is picked up and what has been sitting on their mattresses,” Lianne says. Their Ridamite treatment first kills then picks up bed bugs as well as dust mites and dead skin cells. “This is also beneficial for asthmatics and elderly,” she says.

Bed bugs feeding on people can cause reactions on the skin.

keeping those ‘nasties’ away from your home...

Explosion of rats Householders are being warned about an explosion of rats after a long, hot ‘summer of love', with home invasions already happening and even more on the way once it turns cold. The nationwide problem has been identified by a Marlborough's Andy McAslan of McAs Pest and Weed Control and Carpet Cleaning. He said the lengthy hot weather has meant a population explosion because of the perfect breeding conditions. More have been breeding and fewer drowned in their burrows by rain. Now they are invading people's houses nationwide in a hunt for snug homes.

Creepy crawlies invasion By eradicating your fly problem, you will be removing a food source for many spiders including the White Tail Spider. Creepy Cockroaches There are cockroaches which prefer to live outside, and although unpleasant, they generally stay out of the way. There there are inside cockroaches which can invade any room, including the kitchen where we prepare our food. These are a difficult pest to eradicate but the trick is to draw out the egg laying adults and kill them. Menacing Mice Rodents a re a problem all year

round, but particularly more so in winter. This is because they are mammals and like us, they like shelter, warmth and food. Sometimes it takes more than some tempting peanut butter to catch mice, so to really tackle this proble you need a professional who has the expert knowledge in locating and clearing out the whole nest.

Scary Spiders The White Tail Spider is a nasty little critter which, unfortunately loves to hide amongst our clothing and shoes, especially if they have been left lying on the floor. Even though the temperature has dropped, the White Tail Spider can still be seen inside houses as they seek shelter from the cold and prey on common house spiders. One classic sign that White Tail Spiders are living in your home is that there are few cobwebs and no other spiders to be found. Frustrating Flies That annoying buzzing sound that persistenly bugs you... it could be from Cluster Flies. These are large, slow moving, hairy, flies around 10-15mm with a dark gray to black non-metallic abdomen. In autumn and early winter the adult flies will move into homes and other buildings to survive the winter and not only prove to be a nuisance, but also a hygiene risk.

the Kids say t darndes things...

My daughter got a bit cheeky to me so I told her off. She said, with her hands on her hips; “I’m not scared of your voice, when you growl at me it only hurts my ears.” She was quick to run to her room soon after though! I think her cute angelic halo has slipped down around her ankles. Scott Send in your child's funny comments to our weekly "Kids say the darndest things" column to celeste@blenheimsun.co.nz

Chris Downs

“Making a difference” encompasses Christobel Downs’s approach to workplace health monitoring. With a background of A&E/Ambulance nursing, it was a natural progression to become involved in the prevention and education side of workplace accidents. In 1996 Chris established “Safety & Health Services” working part-time on her business as well as being Wairau Hospital’s Occupational H&S Adviser, a role she left in 2010. A Registered Nurse, her many qualifications include a Post Graduate Diploma in Occupational Health Practice from Otago University. Chris’s main area of focus is workplace health moni-

toring including hearing, respiratory, chemical exposure, lifestyle health checks, pre-employment assessments and Drug Testing. Passionate about the importance of education she always explains results in user friendly terminology and produces comprehensive reports to the client firms. The second focus area is ergonomics (fitting the man to the work environment). She undertakes workplace assessments on factory production lines as well as computer workstations. Her holistic approach ensures the client is aware of “fitness for work” as well as work environment safety. Chris also runs in-house training sessions, including manual handling. Finally, a focus on practical H&S Plan writing for businesses – the more worn the folder the more she likes it! Chris works from home as well as visiting her client firms over Marlborough and Nelson and can be contacted on 021 140 2828.

Pamela will be specialising in Senior Transport and has had a great response from seniors who don’t drive or may still drive but have lost the confidence driving around town and even night driving, the need to just get out of the house, meet friends and still have a wine or two out. Pamela offers a “no rush” personal service and support to surgeries, hospital, supermarkets, movies. Outings for tea/coffee or lunch or any event seniors care to attend. Also knowing

that your Local Chauffeur will be waiting for you at the organised time. YLC can take up to 3 passengers per trip and encourages seniors to share the trip as discounted travel compares favourably with council mobility fares and especially passengers from outer areas. Seniors can now say ‘YES’ to any event they wish to attend. Even FREE Return Trip incentives. For more information and the official launch date: call, email or visit the website to discuss your specific needs. We will be operating in Blenheim, Renwick, Rapaura, Grovetown and Spring Creek areas. www.yourlocalchauffeur.co.nz

Emily Watson Local woman Emily Watson combines her passion for fishing and water sports with her management skills as manager of Henderson’s Ltd situated on Grove Road in Blenheim. “This is a diverse and interesting industry to be part of and the reason I took up this position after completing a Bachelor of Commerce Degree and Masters in Entrepreneurship at the University of Otago. I certainly get to practise all that I learned on campus”. Blenheim born and bred, this is Emily’s

tenth year at Henderson’s and her third year as manager. Her product knowledge has been built up over this time as has her rapport with her loyal customers. “You would be surprised at the huge variety of products we sell, and if we don’t have what you need, we will source it for you”, she says. John Henderson began his business in 1999 specialising in all areas of the fishing industry, with everything from ropes, inflatable boats and kayaks, through to chemicals, oils, pool and spa parts. “I originally planned on taking the job for two years but I am still here because it continues to challenge me and the business keeps going from strength to strength. I am not sure if I would find those challenges anywhere else”.

The highlight of owning a bouncy castlehire service is seeing the faces of children “light up”, says BounceWith Us co-owner Julie McKay. Julie, along with partner Billy Hebberd has owned Bounce With Us for nearly six years, supplying bouncy castles for a wide range of events throughout Marlborough. “You can imagine how fun it is owning a business like this. There’s nothing better than seeing how happy our castles make people

and hearing the positive feedback,” she smiles. Bounce With Us currently has 12 bouncy castles for hire, one of which is ideal for the “young at heart”, and two bubble machines. All castles can be delivered anywhere in Marlborough, indoors or outdoors as long as there is access to electricity. “Our castles are definitely available during the week as well, not just weekends,” Julie says. “We support local events including the up and coming Marlborough Parent Centre Parent and Child Expo”. Discount offer: From April 1 through to August 31 we offer 10% off hire, terms and conditions apply.

Hazel Pink Hazel Pink, of local beauty salon, Facial Attraction, has recently finished a course in a new beauty treatment, Dermal Micro Needling, or Dermal Rolling. The only business in Marlborough offering Dermal Rolling, the treatment is designed to stimulate natural collagen production, resulting in a range of benefits. Dermal Rolling is perfect for restoring skin tightness in early stages of aging, speeding up the reduction of pigmented marks, thickening the skin, smoothing fine lines, and reducing the

appearance of scarring and stretch marks. Dermal Rolling can be done on all parts of the body, after an anaesthetic cream is applied, and is advantageous because it is not painful, with a short healing period, and is cost effective. Hazel is highly skilled in her field, having owned Facial Attraction, for the past nine years, and also working as a beauty therapy tutor at NMIT. Her other services include waxing, tinting, facials, massage, reflexology, make-up, manicures, pedicures, ear piercing, spray tanning and eyebrow threading. Hazel works from home, in Redwoodtown, and appointment is essential. Call Facial Attraction today, on 03 579 2299.

said; “It was totally worth it”. Money raised will be going to the Marlborough branch of the Child Cancer Foundation.

DOMINION SALT LTD Salt Works

PROCESS OPERATOR Dominion Salt is New Zealand’s largest producer and refiner of processed salt products. It supplies major industry (dairy, pulp and paper, tanning, food etc) and specialist markets (pharmaceutical, animal health) with 25kg and 1.2tonne packs. This site runs 24 hours, five days.

Happy with that ref? Central halfback Wayne Young questions the referee in Saturday's WaitohiCentral clash.

Waitohi clinches top of table game A crunch match to decide which team ended the Marlborough premier rugby on top after the first round ended with Picton's Waitohi beating Central 24-17. With five wins under their belts Waitohi now sits on 23 points in the competition ahead of Waitohi 21, followed by Moutere (15), Harlequins (8), Renwick (5) and Awatere (5). In the Waitohi-Central match the Picton team had an extraordinary start when wing Eugene Taylor scored only seconds into the game.

First five Daniel Hawkins, who ended the match with 14 points from the match, converted from the sideline. Central responded quickly with a try by Tom Mu which was converted by Gareth Smith and then Waitohi slotted a penalty to lead 10-7. However, going into the break it was Waitohi which led after gaining ascendancy that brought a try to Smith. He converted his own try. However, the match took on a different aspect in the second half when Waitohi came out hissing. Flanker

Manu Mataele scored and Hawkins landed two more penalties. This drew the score out to 21-14 and it meant Central, after having led, had to play catch-up. With 10 minutes left on the clock it looked possible after Smith was successful with a penalty but Waitohi finished the stronger and Hawkins put the final nail into Central's coffin with a penalty kick which made the final score 24-17. Other premier results were: Moutere 39, Harlequins 37; Renwick 23, Awatere 21.

Applications are invited for this position responsible for operating the solar salt refinery and packaging plant at Lake Grassmere. Chance for MacDonald

Sun sport

With James Parson's neck complaint keeping him out for the next two weeks and All Blacks veteran Keven Mealamu causing concern after limping off early in the gritty 18-17 win over the Stormers last Friday, Tasman hooker Quentin MacDonald may be last man standing in the Blues' hooking stocks. At this stage, with converted prop Tom McCartney the only other cover in the squad, that looks likely to arrive in the No 2 jersey on Saturday night against the Rebels in Auckland. "I thought Quentin was outstanding," Blues coach Sir John Kirwan said of the hooker's 57-minute cameo against the Stormers at the weekend. MacDonald turned out for Blenheim's Central side in the opening match of Marlborough premier rugby competition this season against arch-rivals Harlequins. Central won that match 46-10.
