By Chris Tobin A section of the Taylor River walkway blown out by heavy overnight rain on Sunday night is part and parcel of being in a flood corridor, says the Marlborough District Council. Terry St John who is caretaker at the Blenheim Kart Club alerted the Sun to the three metres of track that had been gouged from the popular walkway which is greatly used by walkers, joggers and cyclists. “The big culvert pipe was blocked with rubbish and and it’s blown out again; the same thing happened six months ago. “In the old days guys would clean the drains out.” The council’s rivers and drainage engineering manager Geoff Dick said this part of the walkway had been gouged out in August last year also. Look good, feel better Marlborough women undergoing cancer treatment had the opportunity to “look good, feel better” on Monday, when a group of volunteers spent the day pampering them. The day included a lunch, and a make over by volunteers, who also coached the cancer sufferers on how to deal with the side effects of their treatment. Look Good Feel Better is a free service provided by volunteers, which aims to provide women who are undergoing cancer treatment with the tools they need to look good on the outside, and feel better on the inside. Attendees were taught how to apply make-up to help camouflage the loss of eyebrows and eyelashes, as well as skin fluctuations, and wig and turban use. The women were also given a gift bag of skin care and cosmetics, which are donated by the Cosmetic Toiletry and Fragrance Association of New Zealand. Look Good Feel Better is a registered charity which began in America in 1987, and relies on self funding and community donations to pamper over 3000 women in New Zealand each year. The charity is endorsed by the Cancer Society of New Zealand, and the Cosmetic Toiletry and Fragrance Association, who donate more than $2million per year.

Tasman rugby coach and former All Black Leon MacDonald cut off Amber’s dreadlocks before Alan Gibbons shaved her head in front of a large crowd. Large volumes of rain which fell in the region on Sunday night and Monday morning caused the front field at the school to be entirely submerged in water. College deputy principal, Michael Heath, said it was not unusual for the field to get waterlogged, apparently due to the location of

the school. “I’ve been told that it’s because it’s one of the lowest points in town, and all the water runs down to this point,” he said. “It’s annoying because it means it can’t be used, but it clears pretty quickly.” Mr Heath said fixing the field was always on a list of things to do, but it would be an expensive operation. “It’s been waterlogged twice this year, but I’m not sure about [the last time] before that. To have the whole field under water is not an

annual event or anything.” The flooding of the field had disrupted the first XV, who were set to play on the field this weekend against Timaru’s Roncalli College, in the Press Cup competition. “It’s been really inconvenient for training, but with the forecast it looks like it [the field] will be okay for the game on Saturday,” Mr Heath said. A wet, wild time in Marlborough By Kat Duggan Marlborough had a wet and wild night on Sunday, with rolling thunder and lightning, and more than 60mm of rain falling in some areas. Marlborough District Council assets and services manager, Mark Wheeler, said in the 12 hours to 10am on Monday morning, Blenheim had received 60mm of rain, with 66mm falling in areas just south of Blenheim. “Rainfall like that only happens between a

two and a 10 year period, so it was reasonably heavy,” Mr Wheeler said. “There has been some localised flooding around town. It hasn’t been a real major event, but just a nuisance really.” Blenheim chief fire officer, Rob Dalton, said the storm kept the Volunteer Fire Brigade busy in the early hours of Monday morning, with seven callouts from 3am. “It was a bit hard to pump water out of a garage when it’s pouring in just as quickly, it wasn’t very exciting stuff, we just went

According to the New Zealand Transport Association website, flooding and rock falls had caused the road between Welds Pass and Seddon, south of Blenheim, to be down to one lane on Monday morning, however by 4.30pm on Monday afternoon the road had been cleared.

Assault at court A 39-year-old male beneficiary was arrested at the Blenheim District Court at 5.10pm on Monday for assaulting the court security guard. The male was waiting to receive his court papers after appearing before the court on another matter. The man had just finished urinating on an internal wall of the court when the guard walked into the holding area. He struck the guard on the head with a magazine he was reading. The man will reappear in the Blenheim District Court on the May 13. The guard did not suffer an injury as a result of the assault.

Call for shooters to act responsibly Some duck shooters should act more responsibly, Marborough Sounds resident Malcolm Adams believes. Mr Adams contacted the Sun to express his disappointment about an incident on a walking track at Anakiwa from the weekend. The duck shooting season started on Saturday. Mr Adams said on Sunday he and his wife went for a walk on the track and saw a man in a grey ute with a kayak on the top. This man pulled the back of the

A short distance away Mr Adams came across a dead swan, paradise duck and three other ducks that had been dumped over a bank. “I’m not accusing the man but it’s more to do what was done to these birds. Runaway located in Wairau Valley A Southland teenager who ran away with a 50-year-old man has been found with him in Blenheim. Police called for public help to find Willow Perkins, 14, after she ran away from an Invercargill residence last Wednesday with 50-year-old Nightcaps man

John Barrett. It was the second time they had run away together. Willow and Mr Barrett had previously disappeared together for about two weeks, but she had voluntarily returned to her father’s house on April 27. Senior Sergeant Bruce Terry,

Pay rise coming for mayor, councillors If re-elected in October's local body elections, Marlborough district mayor Alistair Sowman can expect a pay rise as will district councillors. The Remuneration Authority, which sets judges and central and local government politicians' salaries, has proposed a new system for councillors' salaries, which would see the salary set by the authority, rather than a pool from which individual councils draw on. Under this proposal, the mayoral salary would increase $4550 from $119,000 to $123,550. Mayor Sowman has $4284 deducted from his salary to cover any private use of a car provided as mayoral vehicle. Councillors' base salaries would rise $5000 from $28,000 to $33,000 a year. Councillors chairing committees

would increase from just under $42,000, to $49,500. Authority chairman John Errington said in the report the proposals came out of a two-year review. The recommendations would be implemented after the elections at the end of this year. The authority had yet to finalise

the salaries because it was still consulting on the amount councillors would receive for extra responsibilities, such as chairing committees. The Remuneration Authority, which sets the pay for city, district and regional councils, has increased the national pay pool by 8.9 per cent, meaning councillors in some councils would pocket rises of up to $16,000 after this year's elections. Local Government New Zealand chairman Lawrence Yule said elected officials were finding it increasingly difficult to hold down other employment. "If they're to give up other career options, or significant family life, or significant other things they're doing, then they do have to be properly remunerated."

Blue skies welcomed for trials Wet weather turned to sunny skies yesterday for the 250 competitors and their dogs competing in the South Island sheepdog trials at Meadowbank station near Blenheim. The competition started on Monday and will run through to Saturday.The trials have been held at the Grigg family’s Meadowbank property every five years since 1937. This year’s event coincides with the family celebrating 100 years on the property.

Rock, mineral club to celebrate The Marlborough Rock and Mineral Club Inc. will be celebrating its 40th anniversary next weekend. The club, which has over 50 members, holds regular field trips, and will be going to Totara flat on Sunday, where the club held its first ever trip. As well as the field trip, celebrations will begin on Friday, with a wine and cheese night, and Saturday with a dinner, and a time for members to share their stories of their time with the club.

“There’s been a lot of hard work by the members over the years, and the rock collection is museum quality. The members are very generous with their time and knowledge too,” said long time club member, Kath McIntyre. “Members now are benefiting from the hard work of older members, who put together a great clubroom, and the workshop,” she said. The club collects rocks and minerals from around all of New Zealand, as

well as internationally, and they also hold regular workshops in their work room, which houses grinders, drills and microscopes. Anyone interested in joining the club could go to the clubrooms, at 28 Arthur Baker Place, Blenheim, on a Sunday to enquire. Environmental Awards field days The Marlborough Environment Awards field days are underway, showcasing projects and innovation from locals dedicated to going the extra mile to protect the environment. Marlborough Environment Awards coordinator, Bev Doole, said the field days add value to the Environment Awards. “It’s a chance for the winners to show what they do and share their experience, and it’s a chance for the public to have a look behind the scenes and see the good things being done in Marlborough for the environment,” she said. The field days have been running since late April, with the next one being held today, beginning at 12.30pm, at the Onamalutu Reserve, featuring Marlborough Harvesting Ltd., who won the forestry award for overcoming many challenges to log a difficult site, while still protecting waterways and

native bush. Two field days would be hosted on the final day, next Wednesday, May 15, both showcasing innovation from local wineries to preserve the environment. From 9am until 12pm, Business Innovation Award Winners, Yealands Estate Wine would be showcasing their sustainability innovations in the vineyard and winery, as well as their extensive landscaping and plantings to enhance water-collection ponds. Minister Responsible for Novopay Steven Joyce yesterday announced the Ministry of Education will not be seeking to recover small overpayments to school staff that are uneconomic to recover. “In order to assist the recovery of the system and clearance of the overpayment backlog, I have taken

the pragmatic decision that the ministry should not seek to recover a number of smaller overpayments that would take up a lot of time for little benefit to any party,” Mr Joyce said. “Since Novopay went live in August last year there have been thousands of school staff around

the country that have received overpayments as a result of errors with the payroll system. “Recovering the smaller overpayments would’ve cost the Education Ministry more money than the amounts that have been overpaid and slow down the clearance of the backlog.”

King Salmon named runner-up New Zealand King Salmon has taken second place in a contest for The Worst Transnational Corporation operating in New Zealand. The ‘Roger Award’ contest named after politician Roger Douglas, architect of controversial economic policy Rogernomics in the 1980s, was organised by Campaign Against Foreign Control of Aotearoa (CAFCA) and GATT Watchdog, both Christchurch-based groups. At a function in Wellington last Wednesday, the Roger Award organisers named Taejin Fisheries as the 2012 winner because of its “cheap, unorganised slave labour”. King Salmon was named equal runner-up with Rio Tinto Alcan NZ Ltd, owner of the Tiwai Point Aluminium Smelter at Bluff. The judges said marine farms were problematic in an area like the Marlborough Sounds, as they were an industrial activity, generating noise, odour, traffic, lighting, damaging habitat, affecting water quality, and constituted a privatising of public water space”. Locals objected to its major expansion plans, which were prohibited by the Marlborough District Council; the Government sent the case to the newly created Environmental Protection Agency as a matter of “national significance”, and it gave the go ahead for half the requested new salmon farms. “This move to sabotage local democratic processes is a particularly insidious one,” said the judges.

Marlborough Youth Week success By Kat Duggan Marlborough has started national Youth Week well, with eight you organisations receiving $43,000 from the Canterbury Community Trust. One of the organisations, Foundation for Youth Development (FYD) Marlborough, will be using the money to continue to fund youth programme, Project K, and also get a new youth programme, Kiwi Can, up and running. FYD regional manager, Kelvin Watt, said the organisation had been ‘stoked’ by the donation. “We’re stoked with that [the donation], it’s a really great helping hand to run the programmes,” he said. The organisation would be running a “Drop Your Boss” fundraiser this Sunday, May 12, from 11am, where 16 local employers would be abseiling off the Alfred St Carpark Building, as part of Youth Week 2013. Mr Watt said the money raised this weekend will be added to the $15,000 donation from the

Canterbury Community Trust, to keep Project K, a 14 month programme targeting Yr 10 students with untapped potential, going in the region, and to kick start Kiwi Can, an energetic and interactive life skills and values based programme that has proven very successful in primary schools in other areas throughout the country. Canterbury Community Trust chief executive, Louise Edwards, said the applications received clearly show a commitment and dedication to ensuring the wellness of youth. “We were impressed with the range of ways organisations are tailoring their services to truly meet the changing needs of young people in Marlborough,” she said. Other Marlborough organisations which received donations were CANTEEN, Girl Guiding, Kaikoura Youth Council, The Boys Brigade, The Girls Brigade, Wairau Youth and Family Trust, and The Scout Association of New Zealand.

Road Safety Week started on Monday and runs until Sunday, and Associate Transport Minister Michael Woodhouse is encouraging all road users to think about safe driving and to take extra care around cyclists and pedestrians. It’s early days, but yes, I think I like them because they seem to be doing the job they are said to be doing, keeping the milk fresh and they are recyclable.

No, being in the cafe scene, you can’t see how much milk is in the bottles and when you’re busy you think you are picking up a full bottle, and it’s empty. We prefer the old bottles.

Pumpkin thieves Dear Ed, Recently, there were a couple of articles in the papers of thieves stealing from the school childrens garden plots. Boy! I know how that feels. The Marlborough RSA Welfare grew a large pumpkin patch this season and last week, 1st May, much to my surprise, while nearby here were the neighbouring neighbours (a young blonde lady & partner with short-cut brown hair) both stealing the pumpkins to feed themselves, when they should have been for the welfare and needy of the RSA. The young man came back and asked “can I help you” as though I wasn’t meant to be there. To this I replied back and told him who the pumpkins belonged to and what

they were meant to be for, but that wasn’t to be as there were only about 1/2 a dozen greeny ones left. Personally, I feel these neighbours who help themselves (they know who they are) should turn around and give the RSA Welfare Fund a generous donation for what they did. Caught Red Handed

In the very link you cited, the apparent increase of polar bear cubs was attributed to climate change! You only need to look at the WWF website to get a good picture on the threats polar bears are facing. Whether you “believe” in climate change or not (in spite of overwhelming scientific evidence), this is our country, our only planet, just shrugging your shoulders and saying “well this English git told us it wasn’t our fault” is short sighted and childish. We should be encouraging renewable resources, taking advantage of recycled products and utilising our real scientists recommendations and studies to create a more sustainable future. ‘I keep driving myself’ Losing his right arm and right leg when he was a young man was a traumatic experience for Steve Tiplady but he has got on with life. Sun reporter Chris Tobin caught up with him. Life can change in a split second. For Steve Tiplady that happened back in the 1970s when he was 20, living in Lincoln and working for an engineering firm P & D Duncan Engineering in Sockburn, Christchurch. “I was really hard working and into the rural life, relief milking, haymaking, as well as having a fulltime job,” he recalled at his Spring Creek home. But that changed early one evening when a woman driver cut a corner and ploughed into Steve who was riding a motorbike. “I lost an arm on the car bonnet and a leg on the road,” he says. “It took me a year to get over it before I could pick up. You go through times where you didn’t respect your life. “My father gave up work to look after me and eventually we came out the other side.” The turning point was Steve’s getting involved with the Canterbury Paraplegic and Physically Disabled Association. “I was very lucky a friend believed in me; she took me under her wing and got me involved with the disability sector.” Paraplegic and disabled sport was then starting to gain a profile and Steve took up shooting with air weapons and competed in indoor bowls, swimming and table tennis. He mixed with prominent paralympians such as Roly Crichton and the late Graham Condon. “Then I got onto the committee, then I was president and then I got into the welfare side of it.” He also returned to work in an office job in Christchurch. However, it was not all plain sailing. He was made redundant. “Everyone thought I’d end up at the bottom of the barrel but I went into real estate. I was married by then and had one child with no secured income.” Selling real estate in the eastern suburbs of Christchurch based in New Brighton, he made a success of it. “I sold very well. They used to call me ‘the Harcourts miracle man’.” He bought a dairy as well and juggled running this business with selling houses and commerical properties. The work demands placed pressure on the

marriage and after the couple lost a child through cot death, further strain was placed on the relationship. He and his wife separated. “I was married to a pager; I was never home.” He met Sandra, who lived in Marlborough, and this prompted his move to the region 17 years ago. They are still together and have a son. Steve sold advertising for Radio Marlborough for a period as well as for Community Diary and enjoyed the outdoors life in the region with boating, diving and fishing. Then he ended up working for Workbridge and the CCS. “I was supposed to do 38 hours (with Workbridge) but it blew out to 60 hours. If I see a need you can’t finish at 5pm.” He believed in gaining an understanding of a client and their needs – a time consuming process but one he says is vitally important. “People don’t care anymore. They’re just doing their job and they’re employing these people with doctorates who have no hands-on experience.” He became disillusioned working in government departments which seemed mainly interested in getting people off their books. And his health was not good. ‘I’ve got a lot of injuries through 30 years of being like this; I’ve a shoulder that won’t rotate. I’ve had a triple heart bypass. A lot of these ongoing issues forced me out of work three or four years ago.” These days he uses his knowledge of the disability sector, of dealing with departments such as ACC and Work and Income, to voluntarily help others who are asking, “what do I do, who do I see?” Health-wise Steve is battling pain a lot of the time. “I have real bad days but I’m fully functional. I won’t give up and sit in a wheelchair. “I keep driving myself.”

Two exhibitions at Millennium Two new exhibitions open at Blenheim’s Millenium Art Gallery on Friday. The first features the work of Kobi Bosshard, who has been called the grandfather of New Zealand contemporary jewellery. The exhibition includes a selection of his jewellery from private collections around New Zealand and overseas. Mr Bosshard will give a talk at the art gallery at 2pm on Saturday. His exhibition runs through to June 9. The second exhibition titled Negotiating This World is a selection of work by established New Zealand contemporary artists from Marlborough and elsewhere encompassing a range of media. Among the artists featured are Marlborough-based wildlife artist Nicholas Dillon, JS Parker, Marianne Jury, Briget Bidwill and others. The exhibition runs until June 16. Kobi Bosshard

Friday May 3: On Friday afternoon a 40-yearold male beneficiary was arrested in Picton on a warrant to arrest issued by the Blenheim District Court for Failing to appear. Shor tly a f ter at 6 :15pm a 28-year-old male was arrested on Colemans Rd after he was found playing in the traffic and when attempts failed to calm him down and to get him back inside his address he was arrested. a 24-year-old male of no fixed abode could not talk and give his details to Police. He was released when sober. Later that night at 11:10pm a 19-year-old male student was arrested and held in custody to appear in the Blenheim District Court the following morning for breaching his bail conditions.

Region left water-logged after deluge Blenheim and Marlborough were left water-logged on Monday after torrential rain fell overnight on Sunday. The cost of repairs to roads in the region has been estimated at around $30,000.

Don’t let the bed bugs bite Most children can remember their parents tucking them into bed at night and saying; “Sleep tight, don’t let the bed bugs bite”. The truth is, the bed bugs are probably biting as these tiny, wingless parasitic insects are becoming more and more common throughout New Zealand. The worrying thing is, many people may not be aware of the presence of bed bugs because they do not have a reaction to the bites. Bed bugs hide in cracks and crevices during the day before coming out at night to feed on blood. They are attracted to our body heat and carbon dioxide from our breath. When they bite, they inject their saliva which contains anaesthetic so we don’t feel it, although some people will wake up with itchy, inflamed and reddened marks on their skin. To rid your home of bedbugs, you will need to search for evidence of

bedbugs such as adult bugs (3-5mm), nymphs (small as 1mm), blood smears that look like tiny black ‘ticks’ or ‘crosses’. A1 Drycleaning and Laundry on High Street in Blenheim specialises in the killing and removing of bed bugs. Owners Lianne and Mike Budny provide an in-home service where they use specialised equipment to first test for bed bugs before killing and removing them from mattresses. The test involves placing a Ridamite treatment sample cloth on the mattress. Because this cloth is black you can see what is picked up off the mattress, including the bed bugs. “People are amazed at what is picked up and what has been sitting on their mattresses,” Lianne says. Their Ridamite treatment first kills then picks up bed bugs as well as dust mites and dead skin cells. “This is also beneficial for asthmatics and elderly,” she says.

Explosion of rats Householders are being warned about an explosion of rats after a long, hot ‘summer of love', with home invasions already happening and even more on the way once it turns cold. The nationwide problem has been identified by a Marlborough's Andy McAslan of McAs Pest and Weed Control and Carpet Cleaning. He said the lengthy hot weather has meant a population explosion because of the perfect breeding conditions. More have been breeding and fewer drowned in their burrows by rain. Now they are invading people's houses nationwide in a hunt for snug homes.
