Wow, wow, wow! #1 “Best talent ever”, says audience at Stars in your Eyes

Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk “Shell shocked”, were Nina McCollum’s words to describe how she felt when she won the 2013 Spring Creek Lions and Districts Stars in Your Eyes talent show on Friday night. Nina was judged first place followed by Larissa Raukawa as Duffy and Vicki Downes as KD Lang in second equal placing. The Blenheim ballet dance teacher performed as Kate Bush singing Wuthering Heights to a cheering crowd. “I had only started singing lessons eight months ago with Con O’Brien and it was my first time performing onstage, so I went into this competition more for the fun and not expecting to win. Nina wins Stars in Your Eyes as singer Kate Bush Continued from page 1 “When they called my name I was shell shocked. I honestly thought one of the other contestants would win, the calibre was so high and their performances were brilliant,” she said. Some of Nina’s friends who at-

tended the show commented to her on the cheering and applause she received during her performance. “I just thought they were a rowdy bunch,” Nina laughed.”But it is lovely to know they enjoyed it. Judging the contestants were Duncan Mackenzie, Kevin Moseley

and New Zealand entertainer Jackie Clarke which contributed to 60 percent of the vote, and the public had the remaining 40 percent of the vote. Nina has nom inated the Marlborough Riding for Disabled to receive her prize money of $1000.

Chamber of Commerce under fire over assets sales stance Marlborough Mayor Aistair Sowman has taken the step of sending out a media release critical of the area’s Chamber of Commerce. This follows the chamber’s submissions last week on the draft annual plan. He was, he said “alarmed” by some of the content, particularly the chamber’s doubts about the wisdom of Council retaining public assets. “It would be helpful to know if this is the widely-held view of Chamber members,” said Mr Sowman. The submission urged the Council to review the merit of continuing to own assets that were not core infrastructure. That included ownership of forestry, commercial property and residential land. The Mayor said the Council’s assets fell into two categories; those of strategic importance to the region, including the port and airport, or those generating good returns, like forestry, which help fund big projects. “I don’t favour selling off Marlborough’s family silver,” he said.

Mayor Alistair Sowman.

Mr Sowman said he hoped people understood that the Chamber represented just one sector – the business community - while the Council’s responsibility was to work in the interests of all ratepayers and residents. “For example, either Mr (Brian) Dawson (chairman of the chamber) or the Chamber itself is advocating more

Trusted for generations

salmon farming in the Marlborough Sounds. Understandably, it sees the issue from a business perspective rather than as part of the total regional picture.” He said some of the accusations made in the chamber’s initial draft which did not go to council simply did not stand up. “I think wiser heads at the Chamber may have realised that an intemperate attack on Council was neither fair nor constructive,” he said. Mr Sowman said it was unusual for an organisation to submit a draft submission but there was no rule against doing so. “Council staff and some senior councillors have spent quite some time with the Chamber developing their understanding of council financial forecasts, in particular the Long Term Plan projections. The projected rate rise for the next year was 4.6 per cent in the Council’s Long Term Plan but the actual proposal now being considered is 2.2%.” “The Chamber had initially tried

to suggest the Council’s tight rein on spending now would lead to greater rate increases in the next he said. “That’s an erroneous contention on the Chamber’s part. “I was pleased to hear the Chamber acknowledge the work the Council has done for business progress on Marlborough, on Clifford Bay, for the coordination of events and on water quality. “I note too that its leaders said they would prefer a constructive and collaborative relationship with Council.” Business and council needed a collaborative relationship and, he said, it would be in the best interests of the Marlborough business community if a good working relationship could be maintained between the District Council and the Chamber of Commerce. The relationship was too important to allow it to fail. “There should be a healthy tension over some issues but overall Marlborough was too small to have anything other than a collaborative relationship.”

New face at the Sun The face of Simon Byrne, the Sun’s new advertising sales representative, is well-known in Blenheim. Not just because of his 15 years in retail in the town, but because of his heavy involvement in the local music scene. He is the founder of the Chilli Dogs, now a partnership between himself and Picton hairdresser Nigel McDonald. For the last ten years, the two have been well known here, both of them playing guitar and doing vocals. “Our voices blend well and we’re just about inside each other’s head. It’s one of the strengths of what we do.” Recently they have had one very talented addition with 17-year-old drummer Thornton Church. “Watch out for that name. You’re going to see it up in lights one day. “He’s incredibly talented and I suspect we’ll only have him for a short time.” Simon describes their work as “contemporary, high energy rock and pop”. It’s proved a powerful mixture. They’ve never had a problem with bookings. For the last six years, there’s been a fortnightly spot at the Cornerstone, plus every Friday night at Chequers for six and a half years. There are also gigs for weddings and corporate work. “We perform at a lot of wineries for those. Nice venues.” He comes from a musical heritage. His father Ian was an RNZAF aircraft maintenance engineer who spent years playing

Body found The body of a 28-year-old man was found in a Arthur Street house in Blenheim on Monday. A post mortem examination was completed on the body yesterday, which found no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death. The man’s name had not yet been released, as police were still trying to contact his family. The matter has been referred to the Coroner.

trombone in both the RNZAF band and the Blenheim and Districts Brass Band. Simon followed in his dad’s footsteps and his early musical training was with both those bands. The rest of his education was more of a chore and he recalls it with a slightly shamefaced grin. “I basically went to eat my lunch. “I was always best at the creative side and at one stage I was thinking about technical drawing as a career.” Instead he chose retail, first in Blenheim then

in Wellington for fifteen years, where he also worked at Caltex Oil. It was family that brought him back, though his dad and his mum Jocelyn have since shifted to Tauranga. However, he says, his “beautiful daughter” Ellen still works here, though she will be leaving soon to train as a registered nurse. It’s safe to say though that music, and now - of course - his job at the Sun, will still hold him firmly here.

Rates increase less than forecast By Kat Duggan Marlborough ratepayers will have an average rates increase of 2.16 per cent from July. The increase comes after the Marlborough District Council this week approved the 2013-14 annual plan, with the spending programme at 0.03 per cent less than originally forecast. One hundred and twenty two public submissions to the draft annual plan were considered by councillors, of which a large number were rejected.

Marlborough’s secondary schools and the Marlborough Migrant Centre were among those rejected for the annual plan. Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman said these requests were rejected because in both cases ratepayers were being asked for support because central government funding had been cut. “Councillors felt, some of them very strongly, that no matter how good the cause, councils should not be expected to meet central government responsibilities.”

Super Liquor

He said he had committed to working with both organisations to explore other possible funding sources. Mr Sowman said moderation had been evident from the outset, with a realistic level of requests for council spending and a restrained response from councillors to those requests. “Nevertheless we had some good robust debate around the council table and I am confident that the public will understand the reasons where we have de-

cided to grant new funding,” he said. An operating grant of $100,000 for the new Civic Theatre was also removed from this year’s budget as it is not required until the theatre opens. A number of submissions either supported existing Council direction or planning already under way. A variety of other submissions were referred to Council committees for further consideration. See these on page 5.

In the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board area, there has already been a record uptake of influenza vaccinations. By the end of May, 39,760 Nelson Marlborough people had received the vaccination, compared with 32,860 for the whole season ending August 31, 2012. However, an NMDHB spokesperson says while many at-risk patients eligible for free vaccination have taken up the vaccine many have not, though the option is still available. Influenza vaccination is free for all people 65 years and over, pregnant women, or those who have a medical condition that puts them at risk of complications from influenza.

Surgeon to head review group Bryan Thorn, an orthopaedic surgeon from the Bay of Plenty and past president of the Orthopaedic Association of New Zealand, has accepted the role of Chair of the Top of the South Review Group. Initially there will be three core services reviewed to give us the best framework for district-wide services: these are Orthopaedics, General Surgery and General Medicine. Mr Thorn will take up the position of Chair in early August. He will also lead the review of Orthopaedic services. A spokesperson for the Nelson Marlbourgh District Health Board said they were currently talking to people who were suitable to lead the review of General Surgery and General Medicine across the district.

From left: Colin King, MD, Tony Cronin (St John), Ian McNabb (CEO Post Marlborough) and Dick Chapman (president, Coastguard Marlborough)

Father Joe Keenan and St John Chaplain Derek Harding on Saturday blessed the new Coastguard craft at an official ceremony held at the Ogilvie-Lee Emergency Centre in Picton.

New rescue craft launched On Saturday, some fifty people gathered at Coastguard Marlborough headquarters in Picton to celebrate the blessing and “launching” of their newest craft The 6.8m Naiad is now named “Port Marlbrough Rescue” to mark that organisation’s suport for Coastguard over the last 15-20 years said Coastguard Marlborough president Dick Chapman. It was purchased to supplement the work of the much larger Interisland Rescue craft as it can be put on a trailer and taken by road to such places as Havelock and Port Underwood. That option means that, depending on the nature of the call-out, it will be a faster and

more cost-effective choice than the bigger vessel. The blessing of the boat with its two 150hp Mercury outboards, on its trailer, was undertaken by Father Joe Keegan and St John Chaplain Derek Harding. Then Kaikoura MP Colin King well and truly christened Port Marlbough Rescue with a full bottle of Deutz poured liberally over the prow. If there were any disappointed faces as the last drops drained away, it was well-hidden in the general air of celebration. Dick Chapman also used the opportunity to announce that fundraising for the new dedicated rescue vessel planned for the Sounds will begin in earnest in August, though

attendees were told they could not leave without donating $5 each before they went. Coastguard and St John work closely in this area with a high percentage of calls being medi-vacs. The purpose-designed 14m Naiad will allow for the treatment of injured and ill patients under cover by the St John paramedic team, who have to work on the deck of the current craft. Dick said the estimated cost was between $1.2m to 1.3m. They had already found nearly $100,000 and expected to get about $150,000 to $180,000 from the sale of the old boat, with the remainder of the money still to be raised.

School support staff recognised By Glenise Dreaver Support Staff Day is celebrated in schools throughout New Zealand today, June 12. It marks the level of support provided for children by those who help provide a caring school community and who add value to the work of teachers. Their role is sometimes, though not necessarily educational. Support staff include caretakers, administrative staff, library staff and teacher aides who work in classrooms with groups of children, or who offer one to one teaching across the curriculum.

Karen McKeown is one such worker. She runs the library at St Mary’s School and also teaches individual children. “I love this work. I love reading and I love to bring out the passion for reading in children.” Karen holds a Teacher Aide Certificate from The Open Polytechnic of New Zealand and wants to do more to increase her knowledge in specialist areas. Gaylene Kelly is also a teacher aide at St Mary’s and says of the job: “It’s quite a challenge. It’s become a passion for me that children feel good about themselves.”

A chance for members of the public to speak ‘briefly and respectfully’ in an open forum before Council committee meetings is an idea worth trying Marlborough district councillors have agreed. The idea was raised by Margaret McHugh of Picton during public submissions to the Council’s annual plan. Although public interest had not been sustained when this opportunity was done in the past, Mayor Alistair Sowman said he had discussed the matter with his three committee chairmen and believed it would be good to trial it in the next term.

Public voice to be heard in council Most councillors felt it was worth considering although some were dubious about the likely level of interest or whether it would accurately reflect public opinion, he said. “I suspect we might end up with a few regulars, not necessarily a diverse range of opinion. But it would be a chance for people to raise issues directly with council.” Mr Sowman said the process would require some disciplines. “Councillors would be there to listen not talk, and the emphasis would have to be on brevity without personal criticism.”

Growing Great Kiwi Kids in Marlborough

FotRrA FamRs hLpNg oT MalOrUgH Kis At Fonterra, we think one of the best ways to look after New Zealand’s future is to look after our kids. That’s why together with our 10,500 Fonterra farmers we are doing our bit to help out kids all around New Zealand by sharing what we do best. Through the Fonterra Milk for Schools programme, kids will have the goodness of milk with calcium for healthy teeth and bones and protein to build muscle when their growing bodies need it the most.

This term, the programme is rolling out to schools in Marlborough. Kids in years 1 – 6 in schools that sign up will be offered a pack of Anchor Lite UHT milk every school day.

By the end of Term 1 2014, every school in New Zealand with children in Years 1 – 6 will have the opportunity to offer free milk to their kids. The programme is voluntary so schools and parents can choose whether their children take part.

Fonterra Milk for Schools is our commitment to caring for New Zealand’s kids.

As part of the programme schools also receive the following; 1 2 3 4

Marlborough Schools are a step closer to receive Foundation for Youth Development (FYD) programme, Kiwi Can, thanks to local business Sanford Ltd. Picton School will be the first school in the Marlborough region to start receiving the FYD programme, after Sanford came on board as a foundation sponsor. Kiwi Can is a primary school programme which teaches essential life skills and values like resilience, respect, integrity and manners in schools around New Zealand. Alister McCosh, Principal of Picton School said “We are excited to have the opportunity to work with the FYD in implementing the Kiwi Can programme in Picton School in 2014. The Kiwi Can values and life skills programme closely aligns with our school’s core values of respect and responsibility. These are values that we want our children to take with them when they leave school,” he said. FYD Marlborough Regional Manager Kelvin Watt is looking forward to building on the success of the FYD programme Project K which has been running in Marlborough for the last four years. “The commitment from Sanford’s is a great start to raising the funds we need to introduce this programme. We are hoping the combination of

nationally supported and proven youth development programmes delivered locally will encourage other Marlborough businesses to get behind this initiative.” Kiwi Can is a school wide programme in which each pupil attends a lesson hosted by specially trained Kiwi Can leaders once a week, every week of the school year. It's not just the Marlborough lifestyle that attracts 2Degrees dealer Sean Zhao says opening a Blenheim office is part of his broader strategy of expansion in the South Island. Photo provided.

Blenheim shop part of wider strategy 2Degrees is establishing a base in Blenheim because, says franchise holder Sean Zhao, it is part of his wider strategy to offer South Islanders access to the group’s services. He and his business partner Alex Su opened a shop in the Northlands Mall in Christchurch in October 2012. The Blenheim shop on the corner of Market and High streets is next, due to open at the end of this month. Invercargill is to follow two weeks later and Wanganui is to be opened in early August. Sean says that about half of the 2Degree shops are owned by dealers like himself. He and Alex Su are building on from the first base they established, a

dealership in Karangahape Road in May 2011. Sean says this programme of expansion makes them the biggest dealers in the 2Degree chain. It has all happened very quickly, given that Sean arrived here from Shanghai as an English langauge school student only in 2001 at the age of 19. He followed up with a year of study at Massey in a foundation course that prepared him for study in the Bachelor of Business degree he gained in 2005. Though he moved into retail afterwards, he said: “ I always wanted to go into this industry.” That happened and he spent four years with another telco before branching out on his own.

There is an African charity who focuses in educating women. It sounded like a good charity. There are also a lot of good New Zealand charities like Life Education Trust

I would donate it to the Cancer Society and the SPCA.

Red Cross, Foundation for the Blind, Guide Dogs, SPCA, Starship. I wouldn’t donate it to an overseas charity as there is enough poverty and need in New Zealand which would benefit from it.

Braille and the Cancer Society.

Traffic Cops Dear Ed, Like a correspondent to the "Sun" last week, I got hauled up by a traffic cop for a very minor offence. Like the earlier writer, it was in Lee Street too. Likewise the cop's manner was terse, unfriendly and officious. No warning, just a fat fine. If the police want to earn respect then like anybody else they need to earn it by a courteous manner. Come to think about it, traffic cops are public servants, paid by the taxpaying public, "Passive Driver"

Thanks Dear Ed, It was a pleasure to read such a well constructed and sensible letter by Ian Allen (June 7) in reply to Colin Geertson's letter of May 31st. Thank you Ian for saying what needs to be said. Dianne John

Matariki Dear Ed, For a province that is steeped in Maori history, I am finding it difficult to learn about Matariki, which was on 9 June. It seems no one is interested. Thanks to T.V. One, who ran a short mention, I have a rough idea now. Better luck next year, I Hope. Laure Ham Eds note: Matariki is the Maori name for the small cluster of stars also known as the Pleiades or the Seven Sisters, in the Taurus constellation. In

New Zealand it comes into view low on the north-eastern horizon, appearing in the tail of the Milky Way in the last days of May or in early June, just before dawn. Matariki signifies the Maori New Year. Historically, different Maori tribes celebrated Matariki at different times. Some held festivities when Matariki was first seen in the dawn sky; others celebrated after the full moon rose or at the beginning of the next new moon.

Dear Ed, I have read the discussion on cats over the last week or so and it would be wise for all to Google and read about "Toxoplasmosis" especially the perpetually persistent cat lovers. For townies cats are pets but they are the same as ferrel cats and can carry the parasite called Toxoplasmosis which is only transmitted by cats. When a cat defecates, the disease is excreted and can live in the soil for up two years. Toxoplasmosis when caught by

humans is causing brain dysfunction. Toxoplasmosis may cause flu-like symptoms in some people, but most people affected never develop signs and symptoms. For infants born to infected mothers and for people with weakened immune systems, toxoplasmosis can cause extremely serious complications. I am in full support of Colin Geertson and Gareth Morgan and others in their stance against cats. Southerner

Accommodation Dear Ed, In reply to Michael Baines letter published on Friday May 31, we totally agree with his comment about so called cowboys damaging our tourism industry. However his comment should not be confined to accommodation providers. We also agree that it is important that all providers work together for the benefit of the sector. However it is misleading to imply that bed and breakfast operators and holiday homes are not paying their fair share of taxes but motels and Youth Hostels are. Income taxes apply equally to all accommodation businesses. However when it comes to local body and tourism charges then we pay much more relative to our size. As regards to complying with Council regulations and building codes then we are required to meet these too. Those of us who belong to our local Bed and Breakfast Associations and/or the NZ national organisation aim for the highest standards which include compliance with Health and Safety requirements. Members are assessed before joining. Our market is a different one from motels and youth hostels. Bed and breakfast accommodation providers are at a higher level of personal service and look to innovation in the services we provide to our guests. At a government level we are recognised for our points of difference. Gary S Riggs Convenor Picton and Sounds B&B Association

Dear Ed, I suggest Ian Allen (Letter to the Editor, Fri 7th June, 2013 – Sun) gets his facts correct before he SLANDERS a person’s good name. Colin Geertson did not write a letter about King Salmon – nor has he ever done.

An apology is in order Mr Allen. I think you should direct your anger to the person who did write the letter, “Scorpio” and didn’t have the guts to sign it with his/her name. Mrs C.A.Geertson

Sports ace and mentor Mark Grammer of Blenheim has been described as a “multi-sport ace”. Glenise Dreaver caught up with him in one of his rare quiet moments and found the description fitting. Mark has represented New Zealand three times in triathlon - Lausanne 2006, on the Gold Coast in 2009 and last October in Auckland. An enthusiastic member of the Marlborough Triathlon and Multisport Club, he also belongs to the Cuddon Cycling Club and his family's shift from Auckland in 2003 was largely fired by the hour and a half of daily commuting. That was wasted time, time that could be spent doing other things, like training. "It becomes a bit of a lifestyle thing," he said. "And it's fair to say I'm a little bit obsessive." His enthusiasm for the sport is extending to planning a triathlon festival" in Picton in November. "The Picton foreshore is perfect for a triathlon. And we have conditional approval from council for an open water swim off in Picton." The next step, he says, is to find a sponsor. "A well-organised event in Picton could grow very large, and Picton is currently way under-rated as an event destination." While his public profile is as a successful athlete in his own right, Mark's commitment to sport also extends to mentoring and supporting young athletes in the region. "There's an element of giving something back with it." So there is support for the junior tri squad which works from Stadium 2000 on Friday nights. "Sixteen or 17 kids." There is also his commitment to Marlborough junior cycling. He and Lance Spencer share the responsibility of taking a squad of under 17-year-olds for training on Monday and Thursday nights, racing on Saturday and out for a bunch ride on Sunday. Despite the heavy schedule, the group has grown from half a dozen last year to close to twenty five this year. In the summer school holidays, there was also a group of 21 who went to a week-long Junior

Cycling Development Camp organised by Mark and Lance. In the last holidays there was a mountain bike skills camp, with a second to be held in October. Most of the students in the cycling squad are preparing for the South Island Secondary Schools Cycling Champs in July. It's not just a matter of taking them out in the road though. There are safety considerations and both he and Lance have had to gain traffic management qualifications. Plans for events also have to be approved by Marlborough Roads. Cycling can be brutal, he says, as you are basically riding at high speed "in your underwear". "And it can be bit of a shock to parents to see their kids riding at high speed and at close quarters on the track at Athletic Park." Because of that, they hold first aid courses specific to kids'-based cycling. "The first thing we teach them is 'Don't panic!'. They are also taught CPR and exposed to different scenarios. "Important life skills." Endurance solo sports like triathlon and cycling are, he says, "quite difficult" for a kid. "In team sports if you're not as good it gets hidden. "But all athletes have to get used to losing more than they win, that’s just the nature of sport" Adult support is therefore very important. "And most kids need a dedicated nutter at some stage in their lives." Mark had one himself, the inspirational Pic Parkhouse, father of Commonwealth gold medal swimmer Janie Parkhouse. In an introduction to the self discipline needed for high level sport, as a teenager he would get up at 5.30am every morning to go to swimming, and then swim again in the afternoon. "I've been doing that all my life it seems."

“Most kids need a dedicated nutter at some stage in their lives.”

Blushing brides set for show

Nineteen blushing brides will be parading in their wedding gowns this Saturday as the 2013 Beavertown Blenheim Lions Bride of the Year Show kicks off for its 11th year. The show is considered a very special time for the brides who enter as they relive their wedding day by getting back into their gowns and having their hair and makeup done again. This year's show has 19 brides entered who are coming from all over the country to participate as they’ve for one of the top placings and the ultimate prize of winning the title of 2013's Bride of the Year! Organiser Carol Taylor and her committee have been working hard behind the scenes to organise this event which attracts people from in and round the region to either take part or be part of the audience. "We really love it and on the day of the show all the hard work pays off and it runs smoothly," said Carol. For many of the brides there are plenty of nerves before the show but once they are out on stage, they instantly shine," said Carol. "Some of the brides say they have more nerves before the show than they had on their wedding day," laughed Carol. "We have some really beautiful brides and some

even more stunning gowns so this year's show is really going to be fantastic." The generosity of local businesses is evident in the calibre of prizes donated for the show. They include stunning jewellery from Michael Hill Jewellers and McCormick & Co Jewellers, travel and accomodation vouchers, beautiful homewares, beauty products plus much more. There are six categories in the show including first, second and third place, audience choice, Miss Photogenic sponsored by Les and Katrina Whiteside and a $300 cash Lucky Bride draw sponsored by Bernadette Thomas. Without the immense generosity of local businesses, the show would not be as successful as it is, said committee members. "We are so grateful for the lovely gifts given to brides and we are very lucky to have such wonderful support from the community," said committee member Sue Stichbury. Each year proceeds from the show are donated to local charities. This year Alzheimers Marlborough, Marlborough/Nelson Rescue Helicopter and St Marks A&D Treatment Centre.

Six award winning filmmakers will be in Blenheim next Wednesday, to inspire and support the next generation of local filmmakers. The Inspiring Stories Trust will be travelling the whole country on its third annual New Zealand road trip running film workshops, community film screenings and on-road production. The workshop, aimed at secondary school aged aspiring filmmakers will be held in Blenheim next Wednesday, May 19 at REAP house on George St. The workshop aims to develop storytelling, camera, editing and project

development skills, and support young people to use the powerful tool of film to tell their stories and the stories of those around them. There will also be a film screening at the Marlborough District Library on Wednesday evening, which is open to the public for a small koha donation. The film screening will show a variety of short films from New Zealand and around the world ranging from 2 to 20 minutes. The initiative is supported by a number of organisations, including the NZ Film Commission. “The New Zealand film industry is

growing, and that means we need to identify more and more talented people and help support them to have successful careers. It’s fantastic to think the Inspiring Stories team could be finding the filmmakers of the future,” said Graeme Mason, New Zealand Film Commission CEO. Last year nearly 1,000 people took part in road trip events, run in more than 30 locations nationwide. More information about the workshops and screenings schedule can be found on the Inspiring Stories website – www. inspiringstories.org.nz.

All business owners have their own individual needs, whether that’s finance, investment or insurance. It’s something Commercial Manager Graeme Andrews understands well. With over 30 years banking experience Graeme and his team work to ensure their customers have direct access to banking expertise.

“Our customers always have someone to contact on direct dial within the team which is important to business owners.” Supporting Graeme is Commercial Account Manager Bruce Kelly and Commercial Assistant Rachel Madsen, who have been involved in commercial banking for a number of years. The team is further strengthened with specialists from across the bank, including Asset Finance, Merchant Services, Treasury Solutions, and a recently created Transaction Banking division.

ASB Blenheim has specialised in Commercial banking for six years and Rural banking for two years onsite. Heading the Rural team is Senior Rural Manager Matt McCormick who has been in banking nearly 30 years and is supported by assistant Robyn Breen. Andrew Trolove joined the rural banking team in 2011 to manage and help grow the viticultural side of the Rural Banking division in the Marlborough region. For both Matt and Andrew, farming has played an integral role in their lives including work as registered farm consultants and valuers. “Because we are both personally involved in farming and viticulture we live it, we don’t just talk about it. “Our products and services are backed up by decades of banking experience which is something we are very proud of,” Matt said. the Kids say t darndes things...

Rather than being a comment, this was a funny moment with my one-year-old daughter Mackenzie-Rose. We were at Couplands Bakery and I got some money out to pay for our purchase. Mackenzie took the money and receipt off me, then next minute she threw the receipt away and kept the money. I think she’s going to be one smart kid lol. DESIGN & BUILD SPECIALISTS

Designers wanted Marlborough students with a flair for design are being invited to take part in this year’s Design Distinction Awards (dDawards) this weekend. Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) Arts and Media Programme area leader David James said the dDawards were a great opportunity for students who are excited about design to show-off their talents. “Challenge yourself and your mates and put yourself against other design students

from around the country. It’s a chance to show us your style, have fun and win some fantastic prizes. For anyone interested in a possible a career in design, this is a brilliant opportunity.” The awards are a collaboration between NMIT, UCOL and the Eastern Institute of Technology, and were created as a design challenge for secondary school students in the Polytechnics’ respective regions. Based around the V48Hour

Film Festival format, the dDAwards involve designing marketing collateral for a local cause or event. Competing designers must submit a digital copy of their work for judging within the tight 48 hour time limit. Because the awards were so keenly contested last year, the three schools have introduced a tertiary category for this year’s competition. All submissions will be judged and graded, with bronze, silver and gold awards

in each region for both the Secondary School and the Tertiary categories. Prizes include iPad minis, and an ultimate designer weekend for two, including tickets to the Semi-Permanent Design conference with three nights accommodation and air travel. The competition will take place from June 14 - 16. Participants must be 16 years or older and can register through the website www. ddawards.ac.nz.

Last week the Marlbough District Coucnil posted information on its website about which assets it owns. This follows submissions made by the Marlborough Chamber of Commerce on the draft annual plan, asking council to review the merit of continuing to own assets that were not core infrastructure. The list includes 4321 ha commercial forests (jointly owned with Kaikoura ratepayers and managed by a joint committee, Marlborough Regional Forestry) returning $2m profit in 2012. Approximately 34 ha of sub-dividable land at Taylor Pass Road is owned, along with 535 hectares of land under vineyard leases. Commercial sites in the Blenheim CBD include the Scott Street site, occupied by Kathmandu and the Queen Street/Civic Theatre block. All shares in Marlborough Airport Ltd are owned, held through MDC Holdings Ltd. The website says that income from these key assets has helped to meet the cost of the region’s infrastructure; “the amenities and facilities that would otherwise have to be paid for through rates (or not be built).” “In the last five years, the income from your assets has helped to fund or provide amenities and services for ratepayers, including Marlborough’s new emergency management centre (civil defence) in Wither Road, improvements to Renwick’s sewerage scheme, Picton’s sewerage upgrade, Stadium 2000 Aquatic Centre, Marlborough Convention Centre, Erosion control work on the Wither Hills, Picton’s Endeavour Park, the CBD Redevelopment, redeveloping Picton’s foreshore, development of cycle and walkways on the lower Wither Hills and the purchase of Lansdowne Park. It says, “If these projects had been funded by debt, rates would be approximately 6 per cent higher than they are today. “Instead, thanks to our public assets, Council can meet the cost of improvements and community amenities – without incurring unnecessary debt or significantly raising rates.”

Blenheim Rowers take out top club

The Blenheim Rowing Club had another success at the South Island Masters Rowing Championships, held on the Wairau River over Queens Birthday Weekend. The club’s 14 competitors won 13 events and four trophies, including the trophy for most points, as well as top club overall for the second year running. One hundred and sixty participants from all over New Zealand competed in the regatta,

ranging in age from 30-81 years. Each of the Blenheim rowers took home a gold medal or first place, including the competitions eldest participant, Brian Hutchison. Blenheim Rowing Club masters coach and spokesman, Kevin Taylor, said the weekend had been very successful. “There was some excellent racing, very competitive with some very close finishes.” He said there were a number of standout per-

formances from the Women’s Quad of Cynthia de Joux, Sarah Lissaman, Fiona McKay and Karmyn Ingram; the Women’s double of Cynthia de Joux and Sarah Lissaman; The mixed double of Geoff Boyce and Sarah Lissaman; and Geoff Boyce in his single skull. Boomtown boot camp a success By Kat Duggan The Boomtown Brawlettes roller derby league hosted a roller derby boot camp over the weekend, for about 25 skaters from around the country. Skaters from Christchurch, Wellington and Nelson came to Blenheim for the two day event, held at Stadium 2000. Boomtown Brawlettes assistant coach, Matt “Mow Down” Brown said the boot camp, which was the first they had opened up to other leagues, had been a lot of fun. They spent the first morning practising drills, and learning from Wellington’s roller derby coaches Tough Bikkies, and Bubble O’Kill. The Wellington league, Richter City, is one of the top teams in New Zealand. “A highlight was that our very own Renee “Hand Renade” Edwards got the award for the most improved player on the first day,” Mow Down Brown said. Christchurch’s “Atomic Squirrel” won the award for most valuable player. Mow Down Brown said the Brawlettes were hoping to attract some more interest to the sport in Blenheim, so they could host more games

and events. They will be hosting a “fresh meat” skater intake this Sunday, which is the beginning of a 10 week learn to skate course for those interested in taking up the sport. For the first time in Blenheim, men too are being invited to come along and join the fun.

School gymnastics festival and Marlborough championships Over 800 children from schools throughout the Marlborough District will compete in the annual Primary Schools’ Gymnastic Festival in Marlborough Lines Stadium on Friday June 21 from 9.30am to 2.30pm. To follow this, the Marlborough Gymnastic Championships will be held over Saturday and Sunday June 22-23. The event will also be held at the stadium, with a small door entry charge to help offset expenses. Almost 500 competitors, an all-time record, will come from as far afield as Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington, Nelson, Kaikoura and Greymouth and other areeas. The competition will involve gymnasts

both recreational and competitive, and from beginner to senior. The event is the first selection competition for those putting their names forward for selection in the Top of the South Provincial team for the National Championships to be held this year in Hawkes Bay in October. On the Saturday, from about 6pm, the Senior Women’s Artistic and Men’s Artistic will compete and specators will be able to see some international level performances. Highlights for Marlborough should be a continuation of some good performances from Anna Tempero in Women’s Senior International.

Anna competed for Marlborough up until 2012 and this year has moved to Christchurch School of Gymnastics to pursue her dream of competing in Senior International. On the Sunday there is the Men’s Artistic Apparatus Challenges. Competing on floor and rings will be a former Marlborough gymnast, Mathew Palmer, a member of the New Zealand team at the last Commonwealth Games in Delhi. The competition will start each day at 8am, continuing on the Saturday until about 8pm and on the Sunday until about 3pm.

Mens roller derby is slowly taking off in New Zealand, with the first NZ Mens team taking on Australia in August, of which Matt “Mow Down Brown” is a part. The skater intake will be held from 1pm on Sunday at College Park on Stevenson St and no skating experience is necessary.
