Dancers take over Photo and story by Kat Duggan Nearly 130 dancers will be in town from today, competing in the 35th annual Dance Festival for the Blenheim Dancing Society. The festival will run from today until Sunday, and will feature both ballet and modern dancing. Marlborough Dance Centre ballet teacher, Gemma Adams, said the competition was a chance for the dancers, aged between 4 and 18 years, to get out on stage in costume. Dancers from Blenheim, Wellington, Nelson and Christchurch will be competing in the competition. Two dancers from the modern or contemporary dance categories may also be nominated to go to the nationals later this year. The public is welcome to watch the dancers at the Marlborough Civic Theatre from 8am until 10pm today and Saturday and until 8pm on Sunday. Elly Molloy, 15, practices her Spanish Ballet classical variation dance, Don Quixote, ahead of this weekend's competition.

West End a changing trip By Emily Elliott Talented actor and musician Tom Knowles is back from London’s West End inspired and challenged. The third year Toi Whakaari student and Blenheim boy was given the opportunity to work with London’s musical theatre directors at the start of this year as part of his studies. Over the six weeks that Tom interned in London, he worked on seven of the 13 shows he saw. “I ended up doing much more than I thought I would. “I did massive shows and met the bigwigs of the industry.” Tom said he got to work on the arena world tour of ‘We Will Rock You’, and be around people like Bryan May and Ben Elton. “I worked with the musical director of Mamma Mia, and the day I finished working with him he won a grammy award,” Tom said. One of his highlights was when he sang alongside a 40 piece orchestra in St Pauls Church in Covent Garden. “I got my West End debut,” Tom joked. More than having fun, Tom learnt about how the industry works. “It gave me a good idea of what I need to do this year to get ready for a career in Musical Theatre.”

“It was all about making connections,” Tom said. He said he spent his days observing the shows, sitting in to see how it was all put together, and talking to the musical theatre director. When he wasn’t working on a show he would tour around London, and got the chance to go to Paris and Amsterdam. Now Tom only has four months left of his studies at Toi Whakaari, and is busy with his music in Wellington. He is doing weekly bar gigs with his duo band Wolfpack, hoping to raise enough money to go to Australia or L ondon next year. Tom finished f i l m i ng fo r a n American TV commercial last week, and is flying to Auckland to do studio recording next week. Although he can’t say who it is for, his sights are set on saving money and getting into Musical Theatre professionally. “I want to go back to London.” Actor/musician Tom Knowles.

High Street revamp in Picton By Glenise Dreaver “This is where the locals go to when they head to town. The post office, library, supermarket, doctors’ surgery,’ says David Oddie, as we discuss the upper High Street redevelopment. David is one of three district councillors for the Marlborough Sounds Ward. He and the Picton Business Group have been prime movers in plans to redevelop Picton’s upper High Street. Marlborough District Council approved the project last week following submissions on the draft of the annual plan. Lower High Street was redeveloped 15 years ago and there was an expectation at that stage that upper High Street would follow, David said. “It’s been a street of two halves since then.” The upper High Street was also a proposal from the North Marlborough Growth Strategy Plan,

although that suggested the moving of the fire station from High Street, not included in this proposal . David says the $420,000 project, to be done mainly by Marlborough Roads, is hoped to start in early 2014. It will feature improved roading design and footpaths with cobblestones, and also landscaping features. The draft design will go out for public consultation before work starts. “It addresses the critical need to generate business in Picton,” David says. That area, untouched during the first stage of redevelopment is “where Picton people go”. Concerns at council about the effect on Picton rates were allayed because, David said, they have earmarked the funds from existing budgets Of the $420,000 only $28,000 would be rated for. “We have gone to four different sources to avoid cost to ratepayers,”

Thieves active Police report that in the last week, there have been an increased number of burglaries in Blenheim, mostly to garages and garden sheds in the Whitney, Redwoodtown and Muller suburbs. They have received five complaints, in four of which garages or garden sheds were either left completely open or unlocked. Police want to remind people to be security conscious and to lock their houses, cars and garages. Items being targeted range from lawnmowers, mopeds and bikes, power tools and electronic items. Police are also reminding people to report all incidents and any suspicious behaviour.

Fun times ahead for new librarian Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk Children are forever asking their parents for new toys. When this happens what should they do? "Come on down to the Picton Toy Library and hire them for a very minimal cost," says new librarian Carol Marriott. The volunteer committee of the Picton Toy Library are particularly excited about the future as they are the first in Marlborough to employ a librarian. A grant from the Marlborough District Council has helped to fund her wages. This enables us to open the doors longer and provide "continuity", Carol said. "Initially the library was only open for 45minutes a week as it was reliant on volunteers. Now we are open Wednesday 2.30pm - 4.30pm and Saturday 9.30am - 11.30am which has already pleased many local families." Carol has had many years experience working as a support

person for community groups and describes her new role as "exciting and fun". "When new people come through the door we get excited and we hope to meet many more and to build our database," she said. Four years ago there were 4 families listed as members and now there are 35, a number which is increasing. "What we provide is really unique. Parents, grandparents and caregivers can come and hire many different toys, puzzles, dress-ups and ride-ons and have something different for their children to play with," Carol said. To become a member of the Picton Toy Library members simply pay a small membership fee and can hire toys from $1 to $3. "If you sign up with us and pay your subscription fees you can receive your first toy hire free to the value of $3. This is available until the end of June," Carol said.

There will be a public meeting held at the hall from 7.30pm where the committee will present the plans for consideration before they go any further. These plans have been drawn up in consideration of a recent survey carried out in Renwick in an effort to make the hall suitable to the community's needs. Committee chairperson Murray Newman said it was time to "air the plans" and gage the response from the community.

This has been advertised in the past years, public have attended, spoken on issues, submissions have been made, with council taking no notice whatever. When the same was advertised some years back, a friend and I

How would it have been if ANZ had been like banks in the United States, which allowed customers to act irresponsibly over mortgages

ANZ and the other big banks in New Zealand have acted responsibly, and therefore during the 2008 crisis New Zealand’s banks did not go under. These banks should be commended for managing the money of New Zealanders in a responsible way, and preventing personal financial loss by customers. Rural women win award for innovation By Glenise Dreaver The Blenheim Wairau branch of Rural Women NZ with its 12 members might be small by national standards, but the work they do has won one of the of the Rural Women of New Zealands most prestigious awards. The Lady Blundell tray was presented to the organisation by the wife of Governor General Sir Dennis Blundell and goes to the branch which has the most innovative idea. It is presented at the national conference, which this year was held in Christchurch in May. The branch’s idea has been to provide packs to some incoming patients in the emergency department at Wairau Hospital. Jocely Cresswell, secretary treasurer for Blenheim Wairau says

that people who are taken into the Emergency Department in a hurry sometimes have no personal effects. “No toothbrush, comb, soap, shampoo.” So members, supported with some items by local retailers such as Renwick Supervalue and The Warehouse, have for the last two years created emergency packs in stiff ziplock plastic bags. They are taken to the department a dozen or so at a time, and staff there let members know when they are running down. Staff are highly appreciative of the scheme. Staff comments when the Sun arrived to photograph the latest batch being handed over was “absolutely wonderful’, “a fabulous idea”, “so useful’.

The South Island’s ‘next top farmer’ awaits discovery Federated Farmers is encouraging South Island farmers to enter the 2013 Farmer of the Year competition. Federated Farmers president, Bruce Wills, said the Lincoln University Foundation competition is about finding the Mainland’s best farmer. “This competition is unique in two regards. For starters, it is open to all farmers whether they are apiarists or the growers of

zucchinis. Secondly, the competition for the first time ever will accept nominations of deserving farmers from third parties. “Many farmers are focussed on getting out there and just doing what they do best. As such, they can be reluctant to self-nominate so by allowing third-parties this right, it means the very best can be celebrated by us all.” The top prize for the competition is a

$20,000 travel grant, allowing the winner to travel overseas to look at other farming practices and technologies, he said. “It is about doing what Kiwis do best and that is to adopt and adapt best practice wherever it is found.” Lincoln University Foundation would also be offering four new category prizes in Human Resource Management, the Use of Technology, and Consumer Awareness

Marlborough girls make Capital team Two Marlborough hockey players, Emily Wallace and Libby SmithKapralos have been selected for the Capital under-18 women’s team for the national regions tournament in July. There are 18 players in the team, from the Wairarapa, Wellington, Nelson and Marlborough.

TASMAN TROPHY The only Marlborough premier rugby team left standing in the Tasman Trophy competition, Biddy Kates Central, will be playing against Nelson at Trafalgar Park in Nelson at 3pm this Saturday. The Wanderers (Brightwater) will be playing against Waimea Old Boys at Brightwater, also at 3pm.

Mid Winter Swim The Marlborough annual Mid Winter Swim will be taking place this Sunday in Picton this weekend. Due to the wet weather, the swim will be held at Shelley Beach, just around the corner from the foreshore. Shelley Beach is signposted from Waikawa Bay Rd.

Playing Russian roulette with the weather The day after the All Blacks demolished France at Christchurch’s AMI Stadium on Saturday, rugby officials must have been breathing a great sigh of relief. Heavy rain pounded Christchurch and continued on through Monday. Rain fell on Saturday, the day of the test also, but not enough to affect a majestic test from the All Blacks. If the match had been held a day later the players would have been forced to contend with a water-logged pitch with the likelihood of a mediocre match. Yet why was this test played in Christchurch, in the dark depths of winter when 320kms south, a flash covered stadium was available – Dunedin’s Forsyth Barr Stadium? Holding tests in open to the elements stadia in the depths of a New Zealand winter can be like playing Russian roulette. You don’t know what Mother Nature will dish up.

So why then was Dunedin not allocated the second French test in June and Christchurch the test Dunedin will host when the All Blacks play Australia in October? Was October too long to wait for the Cantabs? Anyway, as to Saturday’s test, it was clearly apparent that the French were out-coached, outthought, out-manoeuvred and out-played in every facet of the match. And to top it off the All Blacks ‘out-Frenched’ the French for flair. Remember that superb Beauden Barrett try under the posts in the match’s dying seconds! Before this magnificent final act, the French had managed to stay in the match until nine minutes into the second half. However, twenty six phases of hammering the All Blacks’ line had yielded them nothing. French first five Frederic Michalak had a sacrebleu moment, pushed the

panic button and tried a drop goal from quite a way out. We know the rest: A chargedown by Sam Cane and a try to Ben Smith. And that, ladies and gentlemen was more or less game over. Instead of possibly trailing 7-10, the French faced clawing back from a 17-0 deficit. They couldn’t do it the way the All Blacks were playing. After the weekend’s rugby, an Aussie coach from long ago Bob Dwyer had his bob’s worth over the ditch after the British and Irish Lions beat the Waratahs. Cheats was how Bob labelled the tourists and he had a swipe at us too. Said Dwyer: “It doesn’t come as any surprise they’re coached by a New Zealander (Warren Gatland) because they play outside the laws of the game as every New Zealand side does.” Thanks for that input Bob. He opined further that rugby was

That ardent promoter of Parker and of professional dwarf boxing, Dean Lonergan chimed in after the contest that a possible ParkerSonny Bill Williams fight was unlikely since Williams would “run like a little girl.” If this is Mr Lonergan’s level, Parker would do well not to have him in his corner.

Gymnastics comp this weekend Over 800 children from schools throughout the Marlborough District are competing in the annual Primary Schools’ Gymnastic Festival at the Marlborough Lines Stadium today. The festival will run from 9.30am to 2.30pm, and tomorrow the stadium will also be host to the Marlborough Gymnastic Championships for the weekend. Almost 500 competitors, an all-time record, will come from as far away as Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington, Nelson, Kaikoura, and Greymouth among other areas. The competition will involve gymnasts both recreational and competitive, ranging from beginner to senior level. The event is the first selection competition for those putting their names forward for selection in the Top of the South Provincial team for the National Championships to be held this year in Hawkes Bay in October.

On Saturday, from about 6pm, the Senior Women’s Artistic and Men’s Artistic will compete and spectators will be able to see some international level performances. Highlights for Marlborough should be a continuation of some good performances from local gymnast Anna Tempero in Women’s Senior International. Anna competed for Marlborough up until 2012 and this year has moved to Christchurch School of Gymnastics to pursue her dream of competing in Senior International. On the Sunday there is the Men’s Artistic Apparatus Challenges. Competing on floor and rings will be a former Marlborough gymnast, Matthew Palmer, a member of the New Zealand team at the last Commonwealth Games in Delhi. The competition will start each day at 8am, continuing on the Saturday until about 8pm and on the Sunday until about 3pm.
