Eighty gallons of soup By Glenise Dreaver Pete Hydes (pictured) of Blenheim decided to try growing large pumpkins this year. He left four on the vine (judging that a single 400kg specimen was not what he really wanted) . He has already dealt to the two smaller ones. One, a mere 41kg, was donated to the Salvation Army who made 80 gallons of pumpkin soup with it. (It was voted delicious too). The other was given in pieces. Two pumpkins were very large and the one he cut today, which was on display in his Queen Street service station, featured in The Sun in April, weighed 64.8 kilos. Surprisingly, it needed only a breadknife to cut. Half is to be donated to the Women’s Refuge. The other half, as well as the remaining giant, will be distributed in the community.

Johnson's Barge boat, Tawhai, has spent the past two months at Stanford Boat Builders being refurbished.

By Kat Duggan Johnson’s Barge boat, Tawhai, has been servicing the sounds for 46 years, and has spent the last two months being refurbished for the first time. Stanford Boat Builders have been busy working on the boat, giving it new fibre glassed decks, a new paint job, and “a major overhaul”, according to Stanford’s owner, Alan Stanford. Johnson’s Barge owner, Peter Johnson was also on the job, saying the boat was well overdue for the upgrade.

“My grandfather had it built in 1966.” “All it’s done its whole life is towed a barge,” he said. The revamp of the 46 foot kauri hull vessel should be finished in another two weeks, after which the boat will be ready for another 40 years on the water. “We’ll be gone before the boat,” Mr Stanford joked, and Mr Johnson agreed, “It will go for another 40 years, it will out see us,” he added.

Dave Hughes to the rescue It was on Wednesday evening last week that Blenheim contractor Dave Hughes got the call. Willy and Sue McDonald of Middlehurst station, who are friends and clients, were monitoring the weather forecasts and knew they would need his help. The couple run both merinos and stud cattle as do neighbours Steve and Maryanne Satterthwaite on Muller station. The predicted snow was already falling and they knew worse was to come. “And they knew what equipment I had,” said Dave. “I had done work like this before for them, but it was nothing like this.” So on Thursday lunchtime he loaded up his

John Deere 450J bulldozer and went to their aid. They were out on the ground by 7.30am on Friday and Saturday mornings, working through until it was dark until about 5.30pm. The days were spent trying to find animals and then open up tracks across the paddocks so they could be fed. It was tough going in the exceptionally heavy, wet snow, he said. The bulldozer is an open cab model, so warm clothes and snow goggles were vital. “Then you’re away,” said Dave. On Sunday, he opened up a track between Dave Hughes with his trusty 450J Muller and Middlehurst so they could get the carves out a track to enable snowbound stock in the Upper Awatere feed out to the stock. to be fed.

QSM for community spirit Jean Wilson’s gift of a bus shelter to the people of Blenheim is just the sort of community spirit that saw her awarded the Queen’s Service Medal in the 2013 honours list in early June. She is a regular attender at council meetings and during a meeting last year she found out that there was only enough in the kitty for the council to build two bus stops a year. “I thought ‘Why doesn’t someone donate some money towards this?’.” For Jean ‘somebody’ is never somebody else. So she went to Mayor Alistair Sowman, who was, she said, “absolutely delighted” at her offer. Jean took advantage of a holiday with family in Paraparaumu to take photos of bus shelters there and took them to David Craig, a finances and information supervisor at the MDC. “I showed the photos to him and Alistair and they then got pictures of similar shelters from suppliers around New Zealand.” Jean undertook to pay for the chosen shelter if council put down the concrete pad and sorted out “the whole rigmarole”

of consents to build it on her chosen site outside Wairau Hospital. “I was the school teacher there for 34 years and well remember that wait on the road in the rain waiting to be picked up,” she said. The model they wanted costed out at $4500, less than half the price of the standard shelters the MDC had been using. “Quite spacious and a good practical design,” Jean said of the aluminium and unbreakable glass structure. Fittingly, there is a plaque on the shelter marking Jean’s generous gift. She is hoping that service clubs might pick up the idea as well. “wo bus shelters a year isn’t much and it would be good to have others donated,” she said. Mr Craig said they now planned to use that model at other sites in Blenheim, while retaining the bigger ones at busy areas like Countdown supermarket. “It has been a worthwhile exercise,” he said of the hunt for value for money, adding that the shelter sites would be chosen in tandem with the rethinking of the Blenheim bus route now taking place.

Chefs prepare for major contest In August, Chateau Marlborough chefs Jamie Perrott and Tahi Thompsett will compete against the best in their field in New Zealand. They are competing in the New Zealand Culinary Fare, run by the Restaurant Association of New Zealand between August 18-20 in Auckland. It is, says Jamie, the biggest contest of its type in the southern hemisphere. He went last year, competing in the school’s section. This year, he’s making the big step in to the

80kph rule mooted Councillors were told at their meeting on Thursday June 27, that Marlborough Roads is now consulting on an 80kmh speed limit from the Grove Bridge through to Spring Creek. Marlborough Roads manager Frank Porter told councillors that if there was wider community acceptance, they were happy to promote this option. A brochure is being prepared with the expectation that Spring Creek and Grovetown residents amongst others, can make submissions. The New Zealand Transport Authority will make its decision based on those.

Grape spills Twenty one grape spills occurred during this year’s vintage at a total cost of $15,000. Nine occurred on the State Highway, mainly at the roundabouts of Alfred/Nelson and Redwood streets, and 12 occurred on the local roads. Four of those required significant clean up.

open grade. Tahia is competing for the title of Apprentice of the Year and is entering her pork belly dish, and her panacotta, in the open section. Jamie’s choice is roast lamb and a lemon and Greek yogurt dessert. If it sounds absurdly ordinary, don’t worry because there are a number of Top Secret ingredients that can’t be revealed at this stage. Last night, the dishes were unveiled at a $45-a-head fundraiser attended by family colleagues and friends. The money raised will go towards their expenses for the trip. Five crashes were reported on the Marlborough State Highway network in April, one of them a fatal motorcycle crash at the intersection of Long Valley Road and the State Highway.

Enviroschools growth Marlborough District councillors were told on Thursday that there are now 25 schools and kindergartens in the Enviroschools programme, which is 80 per cent of the total number in Marlborough. There are also 20 schools who have joined the children’s edible gardens programme.

International flair for revamped Farmers The doors have now opened on the 5000m of the revamped Farmers store, nearly a week before this was planned. There is a real international feel to the shop as customers enter through the revamped health and beauty section. It features, for example, a perfume wall that is over triple the size of the previous one. “The selection is now huge,” says the store’s Blenheim manager Karen Stevenson. “We’ve brought in the most coveted brands.... it’s so beautiful.” The cosmetics area also features the latest in design stands. ”The only four in New Zealand so far,” says regional manager Brett Shea. They have employed three new cosmeticians to help cover the Lancome and Shiseido brands that have been added to the store’s selection. Karen says however, that they are

not fully set up yet. “We are still shifting stock and there are still some tight corners.” The Grand Opening is therefore at least two months away and will include a refurbished homewares section. “You can sense the enthusiasm of the team is obvious as soon as you step inside the door. “They are just bubbling over with excitement and enthusiasm,” says Karen. “And the public is so enthusiastic too.” Brett says the “major” investment had come about because the store had been doing “too well’. “The size was compromising our range, and the opportunity to take over the mall area came up.” He and Karen are both very confident that the investment will pay off. “We’re very confident we’ll do well,” said Karen.

He says they have had a warm welcome to Blenheim. “People are really nice here.” Two jobs have been created so far, one a local man Brad Barton.

British beauty By Belinda Jackson Christchurch born and bred, Jim Fox came to Marlborough as a result of the earthquakes. It didn’t take him long to hear about Omaka Classic Cars and after visiting, he decided he’d like to help out as a volunteer host. Jim has always had a love of cars and has owned many in his time. It all started with a 1959 Austin A35, the first car he ever bought. He has fond memories of racing this 850cc around the original track at Ruapuna, challenging a mate and fellow member of the Canterbury Car Club to battle him over the quarter mile. Jim’s next car was a 1965 Morris 1100 which he recalls as a ‘good car’. One of his more vivid memories was driving from Christchurch to Dunedin in just four hours and then seeing the look on people’s faces when he told them! Another great achievement was the car managing to tow a MkI Consul on a flat deck trailer - not bad for just an 1100cc engine! Jim then went on to own various Toyotas, a loyalty born from his time working at the Toyota assembly plant in Christchurch from 1985 until it was shut down in 1996. His first was a 1978 Corolla and his last, a 1992 Camry wagon which he says he’s sorry he ever sold. The Camry had 240,000ks on the clock when he bought it and he added another 100,000k before it was sold. Hondas also featured among Jim’s cars. He bought three brand new Honda Jazz and sold each one at 8,000ks. Next was a Mazda 323 wagon which he owned for seven years and remembers ‘a lot of good times’! Jim then had a Hyundai Getz for twelve months before moving to Marlborough where it was sold and he now drives a Holden Barina. Not quite the ‘classic car’ maybe, but as Jim explains, “I’d love to own a classic car now, but with no garage I couldn’t look after it properly.” But as he points out, with his involvement

Volunteer host Jim Fox with a 1958 Austin Westminster A95 at Omaka Classic Cars.

at Omaka Classic Cars he’s able to immerse himself in them anytime! One of things Jim really enjoys about being at Omaka Classic Cars is the chance to meet interesting people. One particular chance meeting was with a man who had been with Walt Disney for 17 years and who was involved

in the making of the Herbie movies. Both were delighted to discover the 1968 Volkswagen Beetle in the Omaka collection is the same model as that used in the movie!

To chat to Jim or any of the knowledgeable volunteer hosts at Omaka Classic Cars, visit any day between 10am and 4pm. Entry is just $10 or free for children under 12.

Collins Septic Tank Services “You’ve got to have a sense of humour in this job,” says Noel “Smokey” Collins, a fully-licensed drainage contractor. It’s not everyone who would spend thirty years of their life cleaning out septic tanks, grease traps, disposing of winery waste, cleaning up after industrial accidents and fuel spills. “Anything that goes up a four-inch pipe, I can suck it up,” he says. “I do portaloos and long drops.” Though he admits long drops can be difficult. “People use them instead of rubbish tins and there can be anything in that.” He’s made some interesting discoveries in his time with false teeth, watches. shovels, rakes, even a five-foot stepladder once. There was also a Queen’s Award Medal. “I retrieved that for the customer.” “I’ve seen it all!” “I’m one of the longest-serving operators in the South Island, if not the longest.”

And Smokey has kept his trademark earthy sense of humour. It goes with him on all his jobs. He travels from the Rai Valley, to Kaikoura and Lake Rotoiti, French Pass and D’Urville Island. “I do all the Sounds by barge and road.” “And I react quickly to emergencies.” With five appointments for an interview for this ad cancelled because of customer emergencies, you know it’s true. “The customer’s my boss,” he says.

Crunch time for Crusaders After all the razzamatazz of a three test series between the All Blacks and France, Super Rugby kicks off again this weekend. Saturday’s match against the Highlanders is vital for the Crusaders who are placed sixth and chasing a place in the play-offs. Their next two matches will be at home but they will be tough; firstly, against the Chiefs and then the Hurricanes. If the Crusaders lose one of these three matches they can still make the play-offs; two losses and they’re gone. So they’ll be a tad nervous trotting out onto Forsyth Barr Stadium on Saturday. With only two wins in 11

matches the Highlanders will not be under a great deal of pressure and playing only for pride. Possibly too the Highlanders will still be pumped up after their big 38-28 win over the Blues last month. One worrying factor for the Crusaders is that, while admittedly without their stars, they lost in a friendly against the Hurricanes last Friday. By all accounts they put in a shoddy effort. Also back in action this weekend will be the Press Cup secondary schools’ rugby competition. Marlborough Boys’ College was unbeaten in the first round of this competition winning six of seven matches and drawing

the other after coming back from being 5-22 down to draw 22-all against Nelson College. They play Christchurch Boys’ High School at home this weekend and over the next few weeks will have trips to Christchurch to meet high-flying St Bede’s College and Christ’s College. Good luck to them. Fi na l ly, what do you think of boxer David Tua making a comeback against Alexander Ustiniov, a giant 2.02m Russian at Hamilton’s Claudelands Arena in August? In his prime Tua would have knocked this guy into the middle of next week. Tua is 40, still overweight in spite of six months tough training and how can he

Chris Tobin expect to be in ring shape if he has not been having regular fights? The last time he fought was nearly two years ago. His story is following a path too often trod by professional boxers. He’s won and lost a small fortune. Instead of sitting back enjoying the fruits of his hard labours in a grim, unforgiving sport, he’s hard-up, fighting only for money and with his formerly explosive ring skills sadly diminished.

Nina donates cheque to RDA Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk Stars in Your Eyes 2013 winner Nina McCollum presented her winnings to the Marlborough Riding for Disabled on Wednesday, the charity she nominated to receive $1000. Assistant head coach and horse manager Amanda Bashford gratefully accepted the cheque which will fund medical training for coaches.

"We have an international coach who specialises in para-equestrian coming to Blenheim to train our coaches on how to work with different disabilities. "We have 75 people come through here every week from as young as 14months through to their 50's so it's important that our staff have this training. Thank you to Nina and to the Stars in Your Eyes show," she said.
