Council clean-out

October 13, 2010

“I knew there was a groundswell for change. But I didn’t realise I would lose over half the district council, says Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman. “It’s certainly not business as usual, he says of the elections that saw him lose eight of the thirteen-strong council. Two members, Jill Bunting of the Blenheim Ward and Andrew Barker of Wairau Awatere, had stood down. Another four of the seven Blenheim councillors have been replaced, as have both the former Picton Ward councillors, leaving just five of the previous team. Continued Page 4.

3rd Term Alistair Sowman is moving into his third term as Marlborough’s Mayor. He was first elected to the position in 2004, having served one term as a councillor from 2001.

How to reach us

MOTHER of all jet boats unveiled Continued from Page 1. John Derry, who is also the boat’s owner, says the MOTHER jet boat is all about delivering massive amounts of energy and MOTHER Energy Drink delivers a MOTHER of an energy hit, so the partnership is the perfect match. They will be involved in the Kaiapoi ITM 2010 New Zealand

Jet Boat Marathon, which began on October 11, and still has 5 race dates to run. “The MOTHER jet boat is an amazing piece of machinery to get behind and drive and I’m stoked MOTHER Energy Drink could get behind me to make this thing happen. John Derry says he named the

world-class MOTHER jet boat in tribute to his father, who coincidently was the first New Zealander to break 160kmph in the water. “The MOTHER jet boat is named “Going Places after my father’s record breaking boat. Hopefully with a MOTHER of an energy hit behind me, I will break some records too!

Delina Shields, Marketing Manager - Still Beverages, Coca-Cola Oceania, says “Partnering with a boat containing a massive jet engine is the perfect match for MOTHER Energy Drink which is all about delivering a MOTHER of an energy hit. We’re very proud to be working with John Derry in bringing it to the New Zealand public.

John Derry was proud to unveil the first New Zealand owned turbine jet boat - one of only two in the world - at the Blenheim Boat Show yesterday. The MOTHER jet boat is named “Going Places after his father’s record breaking boat, and while his father enjoyed slicing the water at 160

kmph, John Derry’s boat has the ability to reach in excess of 200kmph. After 35 years of boating with the family and 12 years of racing, John’s had great success in one day events, but is still chasing a marathon win – something he hopes will be possible with this new boat.

Married to Hayley, with an eight-year-old daughter, Chloe, and new baby due in November, John Derry’s family enjoy boating in the Marlborough Sounds, putting the next generation in good stead to continue the Derry family’s legacy on the water.

John Derry, pictured right, is a regular jet boater, with a family history steeped in the sport. His father, Blue Derry was the first New Zealander to break 160 kmph in the water and got John involved in jet boating from a very early age. This need for speed is something that has transpired into his own life, now owning and bringing the MOTHER jet boat to Blenheim in an unprecedented New Zealand first. It’s a partnership that has taken things to the next level, with MOTHER Energy Drink delivering a MOTHER of an energy hit in the powerful form of New Zealand’s fastest jet boat.

Voters demand change

Jamie Arbuckle.

David Dew.

Eight new councillors in shake up Former mayor Leo McKendry was surprised there were more than three changes in the Blenheim Ward. He also considers the Picton sitting councillors hard done by, “especially when you consider the amount of capital works being done in Picton. You only have to look at how the landscape has changed in the last two years. There certainly was a mood for change in Marlborough, He stands by his opinion (The Sun, July 28) that once you have been mayor you should get out of council altogether – and that two terms is plenty for any councillor. It is very easy when you have been there for two terms to forget who put you there and whose money you are spending. ‘You become so involved with council and carried away with your own enthusiasm. That’s natural he says, but after three terms it becomes more of

can also step up. I mean, going to university is a steep learning curve too. Asked his opinion on deputy mayor, he said: “It is important for the Mayor to have someone whom he can work with and lighten the load with the number of mayoral engagements. “Jenny Andrews has handled this position exceptionally well over the last three years and she should continue. Leo McKendry.

a problem. “We need fresh ideas and faces. He believes sitting councillors were not listening to the public, and younger people voting may have also contributed to the cleanout. The incoming council has a lot of business skill he says. “David Dew was made finance chair in his first term in council, so I am sure other new councillors

New councillor “stoked by result “I’m stoked says new Marlborough District councillor Jessica Bagge. What a great result....I’m excited about the results and the chance to work with such a great team. She thanked all her supporters and voters, saying that expectations were now high. “Our mandate is clear. It’s up to us to deliver - together we’ll take Marlborough into the future! Jamie Arbuckle was, on Monday’s preliminary count, still the top-polling candidate. With 1417 votes, he was just 12 ahead of Jenny Andrews on 1405. He attributes the change to the old council being out of touch. “The new council must listen and show action to the hardship the

recession is causing. “Rates must be controlled by cutting council spending. Public perception of the council culture must change. It must be seen working for the people of Marlborough not against them, he said. Deputy Mayor in the last council Jenny Andrews said she was “humbled to be re-elected. I look forward to working with our new and returning councillors. “For those who were unsuccessful my admiration to you for standing. “To those who had served us in the past, it was an honour to have worked with you and you will not be forgotten. She thanked the public for their support. Continued PG 4.

Council clean-out Continued from PG 1. The focus for voting change had been on older members, he said. Mr Sowman was pleased with his own provisional majority of almost 4000 when the second stage of results came through on Monday morning. That was “pretty steady in comparison to 2007 when 4467 votes were cast against him when he was opposed by two candidates. Rates had proved to be a major election issue. A zero rates increase, or close to it, had been suggested. We will look at that. The level of transparency of council decision-making had been raised by some candidates. That had been taken on board, though he felt it had been an overstated issue. “The vast bulk of council business is conducted in open forum. But very few members of the public come to meetings. Sometimes no one. Two successful candidates had raised the methyl bromide issue in Picton and, Mr Sowman said, “I’m opposed to it as much as anybody. But we don’t have the

Mayor Alistair Sowman.

ability to say ‘That’s it’. “It’s really tough. They were waiting on the ERMA report due out in late October-early November. “It may be a question of legal use. If we did ban it under current rules, the forestry industry could well challenge the decision. Mr Sowman was not concerned about councilor roles on commitees, saying that while experience was lost, there were new opportunities. “They bring varied skills. There are two solicitors there for example. The resource consent hearings

process could be challenging, as Jill Bunting, who trained as a commissioner, had gone. He said council had also lost all three of their trained and experienced chairs in Liz Davidson, Cliff Bowers and Tom Harrison. Training would be offered to new members however. An informal meeting of councillors is set for Friday October 22, and the first full meeting is on Thursday October 28. Before then, Mr Sowman has to meet each new councillor individually and discuss their background and experience before the committee roles are allocated. “It’s like presenting their CV. Then he would present his recommendations to council. They would also need to talk about their promises on the hustings, their aspirations and what was practical. He also has to recommend a deputy mayor. Despite Jamie Arbuckle, the unsuccessful mayoral contender, being the highest polling council candidate, Mr Sowman says it would be very hard to ask a firsttime person to be deputy mayor.

Voting numbers The second progress report on voting in the Marlborough District Council election, released on Monday October 11, are as follows, in order of vote count. Mayoralty: Alistair Sowman 10,775, Jamie Arbuckle 6790. Blenheim Ward: Jamie Arbuckle 1417, David Dew 1404, Jenny Andrews 1401, Terry Sloan 1323, Jessica Bagge 1315, John Leggett 1249, Graeme Taylor 1232. Marlborough Sounds Ward: David Oddie 897, Trevor Hook 871, Graeme Barsanti 813. Wairau-Awatere Ward: Peter Jerram 2036, Francis Maher 1196, Geoff Evans 1053. The final result, with special votes counted, is expected to be released on Thursday October 14.

Candidates stoked Continued from PG 3. “Please continue to contact me if there is a problem. I will do my best to help. Returning councillor David Dew also thanked voters, saying they had clearly voted for change. I think my policies picked up on their aspirations for council. Now on with the job. “Change is here and I’m sure the new council will deliver. New councilor John Leggett agreed on the clear message for change, saying however, he had met some very capable candidates during the lead up who missed out. I am very grateful to the people

who supported me. I intend to be successful in the role. David Oddie, top-polling candidate in the new Marlborough Sounds Ward, said it was sad for the two losing Picton Ward councillors. “Their hearts were in the right place. But there was a general move for change. He did not attribute that to nay particular issues. “I think they were just not seen as listening to the community on various issues. He said his primary role would be to work for the community. I want to see decisions in the ward being more community-driven than council driven.

Fashion show for breast cancer Do you love fashion, fun and socializing? If you do then the Beaver town Blenheim Lions have a real treat for you. On October 20 the Marlborough Convention Centre will be hosting a Fashion Show in support of Breast Cancer. Convener for the fashion ‘extravaganza’ is Carol Taylor who says the highly anticipated event is held every two years. “We do this fashion show to both help

raise awareness and fundraise for breast cancer, and all proceeds stay locally, she says. Modeled by the Beavertown Blenheim Lions ladies, the fashion show will have everything from sports, day, evening and night wear as well as mother-of-thebride clothing and wedding dresses. Tickets cost $20 and are available from Jean Jones, Euro Fashion, Janes Boutique, Stirling Sports and Bella Donna Lingerie. “Tickets are selling fast so make sure

you don’t miss out on a great night, Carol says. ABOVE: Sue Stichbury, Lena Milne, Rosemary Clark, Carol Taylor and Kay Pont are a few of the hard working women behind the Beavertown Blenheim Lions Fashion Show in Support of Breast Cancer on October 20. The fashion show will showcase sports, day, evening and night wear as well as mother-of-the-bride and wedding attire.

Vineyards battle light frost “It’s a wonder the earth didn’t take off with the amount of wind machines active yesterday morning, laughed Omaka Springs Estate vineyard manager Richard Shepherd. There were a many tired faces out in the community today after frost fans, helicopters and many other frost busting efforts began in the early hours of Tuesday morning. Temperatures were reported to have dropped as low as -1.9 in some rural areas as Jack Frost paid a brief visit to Marlborough.

Mr Shepherd said out of the seven wind machines throughout Omaka Springs Estate, only five were activated last night. “I was out at 3am this morning as temperatures dipped as low as -0.5degrees and -1degrees, though they didn’t stay at that point for long. “We are lucky however where we are situated as there are other vineyards surrounding us with their wind machines active which keep the air marching down the valley, he said.

Forrest Estate Wines vineyard manager Tim Alexander said for them, temperatures got down as low as minus 1.4 degrees which prompted the use of wind machines in North Bank and Brancott areas. At Saint Clair, owner Neal Ibbotson said they had the wind machines going on Monday night, though the frosts were not particularly heavy in their vineyards. “It’s too early to tell if there is any damage, but we don’t expect any. “It is possible in other areas

of Marlborough there could be some damage though. Warmer weather has been predicted for the remainder of the week, however many vineyards will be remaining cautious through to the end of November. “I wouldn’t mind betting that we may get a couple more scares before the end of November, you never know with the weather pattern we are having. We have had them as late as that, Mr Shepherd agreed.

Privates Michael Douglas and Steve Rastid of the 2-1 Battalion, Bravo Company on a training mission from Burnham Military Camp.

Army takes over Havelock By Celeste Lodewyk On lookers couldn’t get enough of the action last week as the New Zealand Army swooped upon Havelock and Woodbourne as part of a military exercise. After evacuating participating Havelock homes and businesses, the Sun caught up with Privates Michael Douglas and Steve Rastid of the 2-1 Battalion, Bravo Company from Burnham Military Camp. Standing guard on Main Road, Havelock both men were armed with guns loaded with blank rounds and the necessary equipment to deal with an emergency evacuation of civilians.

The exercise began October 10, with troops being dropped off at Woodbourne where they secured the fire station and set up an evacuee camp before travelling to Havelock to set up an informal camp. Throughout the four day exercise troops had to respond to a range of emergency events including the evacuation of participating Havelock residents from their homes and businesses. What’s in a name? A brief history: Hope Drive With Mark Stevenson First National

Smith Street is believed to have been named after Mayor Mr C. T. Smith, whose first year in office was 1939. The drums of war were starting to sound and in February, Mr J.V. Irving was elected president of the newly-formed Defence League. By March, there were newspaper pictures of the latest British fighter plane, the Vickers Supermarine Spitfire. Also in March, council spent ÂŁ2158 on unemployment relief wages. By May, Blenheim was suffering from drought with 84 points of rain reported in five months. In June that year, Blenheim recorded the second highest air movement figures in New Zealand with 21,093 arrivals and departures. Proudly sponsored by...

Well done new councillors Congratulations to Jamie Arbuckle and the other new councillors for speaking out and being elected. The people have spoken; democracy has cast her vote in Marlborough and around NZ. We all need to respect the democratic process and its clear message, to those who were cast aside is change! No longer business as usual. Democracy George Washington said is of the people by the people for the people. If these councillors vision and passion on which they were elected doesn’t suit some of the beaurocracy two things it represents the people’s vision and second we elected the

councillors not the beaurocrats to govern and represent us. If change is coming at local government it is in the rejected processes and systems. It’s in the mindsets of people who were not elected. We have all experienced the results and voted accordingly. Our future in this country lies with embracing our youth and the needs of a new generation, without forgetting our traditional values. You are elected to serve the constituents not the systems. Serve the people and you will be a success despite your supposed inexperience. Michael Mooney

Picton Wine Festival For five years the Picton Wine Club has been matching some of the best wine the region and country has to offer with magnificent morsels from Picton’s Le Cafe. Now the club is gearing up for the first Picton Wine Festival, to celebrate its anniversary in style. Sixteen wineries will present their top drops on November 5, at the Mercure Hotel, with free tastings and excellent knowledge about the wines on offer. Le Cafe’s Peter Schoni will recreate some of his best wine match morsels, for guests to taste. Anyone over the legal drinking age is welcome to celebrate with us. Club members are encouraged to bring friends.

The presenting wineries have all previously shown their wines at a club tasting and will let us taste their new releases, as well as some of their special wines. A wine glass and complete list of wines available for purchase will be issued on arrival. Wine pourings and finger food are included in the ticket price. Tickets for the event, at $25, must be pre-purchased from Sounds Connection, London Quay, Picton or by calling 03 5735337. Local restaurants are offering special dinner prices for those who attend the festival; bookings are essential. Any profits from the event will be donated to the Marlborough Hospice.

Dear Ed, I just read an e mail, under the heading “Guarantee of free beach access dropped from new Bill that if “If the Marine and Coastal Area Bill goes through by the end of summer, the public will no longer have the guarantee of free access to any area controlled by Maori. Prime Minister John Key has dropped that fundamental guarantee from his new Bill. “That means iwi will have the right to charge fees for fishing, surfing, boating, swimming and all beach related activities in claimed areas. “ I urge everyone no matter whether Maori ancestry or not, to make a submission. Are not we all Kiwis? Apparently full details on how to put in a submission on the Bill can be found on the website at www.CoastalCoalition.co.nz. Kiwi Kenneth

Have music, will travel Anne and Rob Barrer talk to Glenise Dreaver news@blenheimsun.co.nz

A

At the start of 2010, NMIT programme leader Anne Barrer was made redundant from an academic career that had spanned thirty years of her life. What seemed like the end of all she had known has now turned into the start of something very different as she and husband Rob extend themselves as internet-based musical entrepreneurs. The overseas odyssey began when Rob, “farmer, sculptor, musician, artist and househusband wrote a song called “Annies Blues which was sung at her farewell. “It was an inspiration for me, said Anne. “The lyrics suggested that I travel (“Been in this old town too long!) and “Dip my toes in the ocean of pure delight! Jim Mora from Radio New Zealand heard about it, and featured Anne on a show. And on Thursday last week, the couple “dipped their toes as they left on a month-long global journey. In their luggage is the laptop, along with the three CD’s that Rob and the couple’s sons Leo and Jake have put together. “We are celebrating their completion by taking them around the world. The first port of call was the IAC (Independent Artists Community) internet music conference held in Santa Monica, Los Angeles between October 9-10. This is to be followed by the Womex International Music Trade Fair in Copenhagen starting on October 27. “The overseas trip is also a chance for us to take hard copy CDs to industry promoters in the States and Europe as well as networking with our host site managers and our USA artists. “We will also be meeting other online musician friends in London. Their three CDs are, she says, the result of three years hard graft: “Writing, composing, arranging, recording, engineering, etching, burning, and promoting plus design and artwork, and promotion through online radio stations and various websites. Her own role till now, she says has been “more the groupie. “Rob has always supported me in my career. Now it’s time for me to support him The adventure had begun quietly when, in 2006, Rob, a singer/songwriter and guitarist, went on a Creative NZ funded hui held at St Arnaud for Top of the South Artists. Anne said he networked with other artists and gained some skills there, learning to use the internet to distribute his art and music. When Rob came home, he established three websites. The first was myspace, progressing to a domain silverwoodstudio.net, then spreading to Indie host site iacmusic.com, Youtube, Reverbenation and ezfolk. Anne said these sites gave Rob the chance to promote the original Folk, Blues, Rock and World Fusion music of his sons Leo and Jake and their musical friends.

Anne and Rob Barrer: starting a new life.

“Through trial and error (he basically taught himself how to put himself out there!) he learnt how to include videos and slide shows. “These gave his largely American and European listeners a taste of organic New Zealand sounds with visual images of original kiwi art, and the South Island’s wilderness and coastlines. While the money earned has never been great, creative success followed this early work, with Rob and the boys winning three Indie IAC Golden Kayak Awards in 2008. This was a catalyst for more recording and the creation of

20 internet radio stations playing the latest Indie music from around the world, promoting different genres and including New Zealand and Australian emerging artists. When they get back there is going to be the pressing need to earn a real living. “Our accountant will like to hear that! says Anne. But with the recording studio that Rob has set up already functional, they will be looking at ways of using that in some way. “Whatever it is, it’s something fulfilling we will be doing together.

Bank and Trust help By Celeste Lodewyk The National Bank Blenheim and Life Education Trust Marlborough have joined forces to help Marlborough kids achieve their full potential by encouraging them to learn more about how to manage their money. In time with the school holidays last week, Harold the Giraffe was joined by bank staff in hosting ‘fun days’ with a sizzling BBQ and range of activities outside The National Bank Blenheim. Kids were thrilled to be up close and personal with Harold who delighted the crowd with hugs and waves. The fun day was an opportunity for those involved to promote both money saving and the educational programmes offered by the Life Education Trust. Between September 20 and October 17 The National Bank will be donating $5 to the Life Education Trust for any savings account opened for customers aged 18-years and under. Money raised is going directly into the Marlborough Life Education Trust, helping the Trust fund much needed resources to Belinda Murray, Harold the Life Education Giraffe, support educational programmes for local Claudia Murray, Karen Glassford, George Murray, Nic Murray, Louisa Devoti, Ava James and Cassidy Hall. children.

“It has been the strong community support and customer loyalty which has got us here.

This is the message from Havelock Four Square Supermarket owners Grant and Christine Fisk. As of October 9, Grant and Christine have been celebrating 10-years of being in business. “And what better way of marking the occasion than rewarding our customers, Christine smiles. The husband and wife team moved their family to Havelock with the intention of purchasing their first business. Originally from Wellington, Christine admits it took a little time to adjust from leaving the city life behind, but have loved every minute of their time in Marlborough. “We were welcomed with open arms by the community who have ever since continued to support

us, Havelock is a fantastic place to be, she says. Since purchasing the business, Grant and Christine have been slowly building up the business to incorporate a greater range of products. “We have made a point of keeping the stock levels high, even through winter. At times it has been a challenge to manage this through the quieter times but we feel the business has done well, they say. Going the extra mile, staff put together and deliver grocery orders from Sounds residents to the Mail Boat three times a week. What’s more, customers who arrive by boat and shop at the supermarket are personally driven back to their boat with their groceries. “It’s all about helping people

out, making it easier for them to do their shopping and giving them with a memorable and pleasant experience, Christine says. Grant and Christine also strongly believe in giving employment opportunities to students. “There are many people in the area who have had their first job with us, Christine laughs. The Havelock Four Square Supermarket serves the Rai Valley, Canvastown, Havelock and Okaramio and the Marlborough Sound’s Keneperu Sound areas. The supermarket provides a full supermarket range including wine, beer, household items, health & beauty, fresh bread daily, fresh fruit, vegetables and meat, fish bait and tackle, and is an agency for New Zealand couriers and the only Lotto outlet between Nelson and Renwick.

Fit grannies on grass By Celeste Lodewyk The streets of Blenheim will be alive with the sound of marching feet this Friday as more than 500 South Island leisure marchers descend upon Blenheim for an eventful weekend. A total of 41 teams including three of our own will spend the weekend performing as part of the annual South Island Leisure Marchers Day.Fun Seekers Leisure marcher Val Alcorn says the public is in for a great show.

“We will be street marching this Friday from 3pm starting at Number One Shoe Warehouse and finishing at the Clubs of Marlborough. “Then on Saturday the event gets underway at the Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000 at 9am where all 41 teams will be marching, she says. The public is invited to attend Saturday’s marching event at the stadium, entry is free for all. Leisure marching is made up

of New Zealand wide teams of ‘mature’ ladies which meet at various events hosted throughout the country. “We are also known as fit grannies on grass, Val laughs. MARCHING:Representatives from the three Marlborough leisure marching teams; Shirley Roughan of Kon Tiki, Val Alcorn or Fun Seekers and Pam Wadsworth of Blenheim Belaires.

New start and sad ending The new President of the Marlborough Multicultural Group (MMG), Stuart Greif, reports that the Group is still serving the Community even after more than 20-years. Its’ aims and objectives are to promote acceptance of difference in culture, religion, and tradition within New Zealand in the spirit of multiculturalism. The Group works closely with the Migrant Centre and provides a focal point for new migrants once they no longer need help from the Migrant Centre. The Group, made up of unpaid volunteers from several nationalities organizes social occasions throughout the year to which the public at large is invited to attend.

The next social occasion is a potluck dinner on October 30. Contact Stuart 5796476 for further details. The MMG last week was saddened to learn of the death of one of its founders, Mrs. Elsie Walker at the age of 89-years. Elsie is the English equivalent of Else. Else was born in Duesseldorf, Germany in 1920 and was educated in Austria. Her parents as well as Else were determined anti-Nazis who hid Jews. Both her parents ended up in Concentration Camps, where her father died. Her mother survived and lived for another 14-years. Else later migrated to the UK after

Picton spirit shines in kids project By Celeste Lodewyk Putting together 30 shoeboxes of gifts and necessary items for underprivileged children has been a fun and rewarding project for a group of Picton women. For the third year in a row, Margaret Harris, Rachel Barrat, Lauraine Young and Gyllian McDonald have been getting together once a month to make 30 Christmas gift boxes as part of Operation Christmas Child. On Monday Margaret delivered the boxes to the Sun office, adding them to the growing pile of generous donations from the community. With six categories for gift ideas, the group purchased and handmade items such as clothing, school books, toys, jewellery and hygiene products to name a few to be sent away overseas to underprivileged countries. “Our kids get so much here in New Zealand, says Margaret. “These kids would love receiving a gift as simple as a ball or bag of marbles; it’s all about

GENEROSITY: Picton woman Margaret Harris (pictured) is one of a group of four who organised for 30 gift boxes to be donated to the National Shoe Box Collection.

making them feel loved and remembered at Christmas time. Concentrating on ages 10-14-years, the number of gift boxes has grown each year and the group hopes that next year will be bigger and better yet again. “Between us we split

the cost of the boxes which are around $25$30 but if we can get more people involved next year we can make even more, she says. “It’s such a rewarding thing to do and it’s the love of god in our hearts which inspires us to do this.

the war, where she met her husband, Ken. They migrated to NZ in 1972. She will be sadly missed.

INTRIGUING: This unusual looking hand tool belongs to local man David Turner. Mr Turner has owned it for many years and after giving it a clean up, he wants to know what it is. If anyone knows the name, use and origin of this tool, they can contact Celeste at the Sun office on 5777 868 or celeste@blenheimsun.co.nz

Shhhhhh... The Baby Whisperer is coming By Celeste Lodewyk. The Baby Whisperer is coming. Thanks to the efforts of three local business women, Sharlene Poole (New Zealand’s Baby Whisperer) will be coming to Blenheim for one night only, Thursday November 4. Sharlene is a postnatal advisor, offering parents nationwide her guidance and advice to help make their first twelve months a more comfortable and enjoyable experience. Cherubs Childrenswear owner Lynda Butt was fielding numerous inquiries for Sharlene’s Baby Whisperer DVD, and after contacting Heavens Above Personal Assistant and Events Co-Ordinator Carol Jacques, the decision was made to try

and source the DVD. An instructional DVD titled Sharlene Poole Baby Whispering Newborns 0-3 months, outlines techniques that she teaches in her one on one sessions with newborns. After some communication with Sharlene’s support staff by Carol, Heavens Above is now the exclusive Blenheim stockist of the DVD. What’s more, Carol along with Lynda and Educarents Blenheim Co-Ordinator Miranda McFarlane have organised for Sharlene to hold a seminar evening. The DVD will be available for purchase and proceeds from sales on the night will be donated to S.A.N.D.S Marlborough as the ladies

chosen local charity. As well as the seminar, tickets are also being sold for private sessions with Sharlene. Five have been offered and only three remain. Tickets for the seminar cost $25 single, $40 double and can be purchased from Cherubs Childrenswear, whilst tickets for the private sessions can be purchased by contacting Carol on 021 202 4878. For more information contact Carol at songbird.c@gmail.com. RIGHT: Carol Jacques, Miranda McFarlane, Lynda Butt and eight month old baby Genevieve Thomas are excited to announce an up and coming (one night only seminar) - The Baby Whisperer.

In memory of our babies By Celeste Lodewyk. “An angel opened the book of life and wrote down my baby’s birth. Then she whispered as she closed the book -too beautiful for earth. Author unknown. Dealing with the grief of losing a baby is not something that ends at a fixed point in time, the message for this year’s International Baby Loss Awareness Week. Sadly Marlborough families are affected every year by the

loss of a baby or infant. To commemorate the memories of past and present losses there will be a public memorial service held at the Cloudy Bay Riverside Chapel on Friday October 15 at 6pm. The public service is being organised by Sands Marlborough and aims at encouraging families to bring along a photo, poem or item in memory of their babies. Sands (Stillbirth and Newborn

Death Support) is a non profit voluntary organisation which provides a support network made up of parents and families who have already experienced the death of a baby and can offer advice and most important - a listening ear. International Baby Loss Awareness Week takes place from October 9 to 15 every year in honour of the babies and infants who die across the country each year.

Local man Pete McKechie was driving home one night, considering his future career options when he decided to action a life-long goal of becoming self employed. With experience working in different areas of the engineering and automotive industries, he set about using his skills and knowledge to form Motor-Kanix and Light Engineering Ltd. This was five-years ago and looking back, Pete is pleased with the business’s growth and development. “I built this business from scratch, Pete explains. “There was a niche in the market for heavy vehicle wheel alignments in Marlborough so it began as a mobile service from home.

“As time has gone on my clientele base has increased and demand for added automotive and engineering services grew, so I opened the workshop on Main Street over a year ago and it has been going from strength to strength ever since, he says. Originally from Dunedin, Pete was only young when he moved to Marlborough and made it home. During the past 12-years Pete has worked in heavy fabrication and auto repairs and servicing. He has also worked for large companies such as Beaurepairs and Mag ’n Turbo. After brief intervals living away from Marlborough Pete returned with the intention

of one day becoming self employed. “I started the business with a heavy transport wheel alignment system and from there have diversified to incorporate a 24 hour mobile repair and breakdown service, light engineering work and general auto repairs, he says. “Since having the workshop I have really enjoyed meeting new people and prided in providing a good and reliable service, so people will come back, he smiles. Motor-Kanix and Light Engineering Ltd also stocks a wide range of products including large brand names Exide Batteries, Alf Lubricants and Ryco Filters plus much more.

Golf club open for business and fun The Marlborough Golf Club at Fairhall has the premier 18-hole golf course in Marlborough, says club spokesperson Paul Eden, right. “Some might argue, but we believe that’s true. “It’s also the oldest – over one hundred years old. He says the green is now in great condition after a very difficult and wet winter. “The course is in great condition and it’s an ideal time to start golf. We’d like to see more people playing here. Their almost-new $700,000+ clubrooms will be a great drawcard for new members and casual players to the course he says. Several initiatives, including a summer membership fee and the chance to play nine-hole twilight golf between 5-6pm as from November 17. You don’t have to be a member to play said Paul and there are some “very, very social events, like the annual business house competition. Teams of four play for twelve weeks from November 19.

Wairau Rowing Club celebrates 100-years Celebrating a significant milestone this year is the Wairau Rowing Club. Marking this occasion the club will be hosting weekend celebrations on November 19, 20 and 21. To make this celebration a true success, present members are calling for former club members to register for the centenary. Celebrations will begin with an informal evening get together on November 19 at the Marlborough Convention Centre. A picnic and regatta will be held on the River at the Club Sheds the following day and offers a great opportunity for past and present rowers to engage in a row over a 350m course and reminisce about how good we all were. Later that night a formal dinner will be held at the Marlborough

Convention Centre where presentation of ‘Red Coats’ will be made to Club members who have recently won New Zealand Championship titles. Guest speaker will be Mahe Drysdale who will have just competed at the World Rowing Championships at Karapiro. The weekend wraps up with brunch at the Rowing Club on Sunday morning. Cost for the weekend is $165. The Wairau Rowing Club was established on the 27th July 1910 by early settlers of the Grovetown and surrounding area. Today many descendants of those founding fathers are proud members of the Wairau Rowing Club. Organisers say despite their best efforts to contact some of the 400 former club members, they are still missing contact details.

“We are hoping word of mouth will spread the news of our celebrations. For more information contact Sharon Williamson on 578-4459 evenings or Marilen Hegglun on 579-2922 evenings.

The birds were released from Oamaru on Saturday 9th at 7.45am. There were 87 birds competing, but due to the nasty weather Shirley Morrison’s and J. and G, Peart’s birds did not arrive at all on the race day! Results: 1st D. Dredge, 2nd Morrins Hollow, 3rd C. Kirkwood, 4th J. Webb, 5th A. Jones, 6th S. Kirkwood
