Helping out at the carpark A Grey Power initiative to assist driver familiarisation of the Alfred Street multi-storey carpark was held on Wednesday. Grey Power’s Colin Draper said older members were interested in having a training afternoon and he approached Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman to assist. On Wednesday Mr Draper, council community development advisor Lynne Reeves and Mr Sowman helped drivers accessing the carpark. “A lot of people are unsure how to use the (parking) mechanism and we’ll repeat this again,” Mr Sowman said. He expected another training session would be held late in January or early February next year. Clara van Wel and her dad Alex relax in Blenheim on Thursday.

Clara grateful

Story and photo by Annabelle Latz Clara van Wel has described last week as fun and positive, selecting songs for her album due out in March next year. Some of the songs she wrote at ten or eleven years old, may be earmarked for her debut album. The 15 year-old was working with two Sony producers in her home, and said they were all going forward in the same direction. Her unique style was rewarded last Monday, when her single Where Do You Find Love made top Kiwi artist spot in the New Zealand music charts. Clara wanted to thank Marlborough Girls’ College and the Marlborough community for all the support, and said taking number one spot in New Zealand music was surreal. Her single took third place last week in the overall chart, against international artists. “I didn’t really know what was going to happen, it’s not something I’m used to dealing with. It’s all a surprise.” Production work should start next month. Choosing the songs to best reflect the young musician, her inspirations, and her love for her homeland of Marlborough is the focus right now. “You have got to have the right order, and the story. It’s a whole journey and experience,

not just a bunch of songs on a CD.” Clara’s dad Alex said the two men from Sony had been fantastic, and understood they were keen to do as much of the production work here in Marlborough as possible. “They recognise there is a lot about Marlborough that has fed into Clara’s creativity.” Every decision making aspect has been run past Clara first. “They are not chucking me in a system, we are making our own mixing bowl,” said Clara. Clara received her new Toyota Corolla last Wednesday, but will have to wait until she can get her Learner Driver License to drive it, in August 2013. Alex said nothing has changed in the van Wel household for them, Clara’s mum Rachel and little sister Daisy. Alex admitted it’s quite fun being the rock n’ roll dad of a famous musician. “And I’ve really enjoyed working with the Sony guys. They are at the top of their profession but still laid back and funny.” Next year will involve clever time balancing, and the school has already voiced its support. “She is still a Blenheim schoolgirl, and that won’t change,” said Alex. “It’s a fun experience, I want it to stay this way,” said Clara.

Big spending for Boxing Day

By Robbie Parkes Families all around the country will be up bright and early tomorrow morning to open Christmas presents bought frantically and at the last minute, but as per tradition, the wallet will not be put away just yet. Often considered the biggest day for retail sales in New Zealand, Boxing Day, (December 26, and sometimes regarded as a ‘second Christmas’) will see prices slashed and bargains galore, in the last big splurge for the year. Boxing day can be seen as a good way of giving delayed Christmas presents if you are working within a budget. Despite hard economic times, the returns from Boxing Day sales last year showed strong growth on top of previous years. In December 2011, the value of Boxing Day Paymark transactions around New Zealand were up 6.9 per cent on

2010’s Boxing Day. A total of just under $106 million was spent across the country as Kiwis made their way to the shops on what is traditionally the most discounted day of the shopping calendar. Marlborough saw a 4.8 per cent increase in the value of Boxing Day transactions and a 5.1 per cent increase in the volume of transactions made. Furthermore, spending in the seven days was up 4.1 per cent on the same dates in 2011, a higher than average annual growth rate for the year. Marlborough saw a 3.5 per cent increase in the value of spending (in millions) in those seven days. The busiest shopping day so far this month was Friday December 7, with just over $164 million through the tills. Paymark processes around three quarters of all electronic transactions in New Zealand.

A traditional Christmas dinner for a family of four would cost $67.31, says Statistic New Zealand.

Cost of Christmas dinner As you fill your shopping trolley in preparation for Christmas dinner, get ready to pay a dollar or two more for those treats. Statistics New Zealand estimates you will be paying only slightly more to feed a family of four than last year, but over the past decade, the cost has increased by an average of $1 per year. Based on the November 2012 food price index, a barbecue dinner for a family of four including steak, chicken, salad, pavlova, and nibbles would cost an average of $64.74, or alternatively a traditional Christmas dinner of lamb, chicken, seasonal vegetables, pavlova, and nibbles for the same family would cost $67.31. In 2002, the same barbecue dinner would have cost an average of $53.65, while the price for the traditional dinner would have been $54.60. In the 10 years since Christmas 2002, the increase of around $11 for the barbecue Christmas dinner came mainly from price rises for porterhouse steak, salted peanuts, and sparkling wine. The traditional Christmas dinner increase of almost $13 came mainly from more expensive lamb and chicken. “Food prices fluctuate over seasons and years. While the overall cost of Christmas dinner has increased in the past 10 years, the prices of some items, such as strawberries and capsicum, have actually decreased,” said prices manager Chris Pike.

As for who will cook the traditional Christmas dinner, that job is likely to fall to women. Results from Statistics NZ’s Time Use Survey show that, on average, women spend 1 hour and 2 minutes in the kitchen a day, while for men, time spent in the kitchen is 28 minutes.

Banter with Santa Santa puts aside his Christmas preparations and travels to Blenheim for his annual chat with Sun reporter Celeste Lodewyk. Two weeks ago I received a tiny green envelope decorated with Christmas holly from the North Pole. Inside it contained a strange message. “Please place a cover across the entrance to the back of your building. That is where I will park my sleigh when we meet for our annual chat. Signed… Santa.” As per his instructions the Sun staff has done so and now we all eagerly await his arrival, so we can find out what all the secrecy is about. Right on cue we hear the scraping sound of sleigh on concrete and I race out to meet him. Opening the door for Santa, I reel back with shock before bursting out with laughter. Rudolph, at the head of the reindeer team snorts in embarrassment and looks away. They have all been shaved! “Oh… my…. gosh. What has happened Santa,” I exclaim. “I suppose I must explain,” replies Santa as he nervously looks around for onlookers. “Inspired by the many shave-off fundraising events in Marlborough during the year, myself and the elves decided to stage our own. “Only… I couldn’t shave off my beard as the children wouldn’t recognise me, so we shaved the reindeer instead,” he says bashfully. “Well at least you were keeping with the Christmas theme, the candy cane shaved patterns are truly unique,” I laugh. Walking through the Sun office Santa stops to greet each team member and commends them on their hard work throughout the year. “What a pleasure it has been to have two Sun Newspaper editions to read each week. What I have enjoyed the most is seeing more local faces and reading about their achievements, it certainly helps when Santa will visit the children of Marlborough late on Christmas Eve. writing Marlborough’s gift registry,” he smiles as he settles in correctly ahead of Christmas Eve, as we have a number “Depending on how busy the toy production line is next into the editor’s chair. of new buildings being built, so watch you don’t clip them year, they hope to perform when it opens,” Santa smiles. “And what a year it has been for Marlborough, don’t you with your sleigh,” I caution him. “Well Santa, thank you once again for visiting us here agree Santa,” I ask him. “I have already had a chat with Mark Elkington and at the Sun office and we all look forward to soon hearing “I must say, talent seems to be pouring out of this beautiful Andrea Boock and they have promised to leave me a those sleigh bells ringing out on Christmas Eve,” I say region. wee picnic basket of goodies on the roof of Pak n Save. as I hug him goodbye. “Olympic gold medals, international sporting achievements “They know not to skim on the chocolate biscuits,” he With his trademark grin Santa waves as he climbs on and young Clara van Wel winning New Zealand‘s Got Talent, chuckles. board his sleigh. what a thrill that must have been for her. “Speaking of new buildings,” Santa adds. “The elves “Ho ho ho, Merry Christmas Marlborough,” he shouts “I will be stopping by her house after this to collect a CD of are excited over news of a new theatre being built in out merrily. her music for my elves. Education & Care in a Home Environment

Food and nutrition have an essential role in children and young people’s achievement at all stages of education. There is evidence that young people’s food choices can affect their attendance and behaviour as well as their health. It is part of our service to provide an environment where students learn, and this includes learning to make healthy food choices.

Work on new theatre to start By Chris Tobin Work on the new $17 million ASB Civic Theatre will start on January 7. “We’re pretty rapt because we’ve been working on this since 2005,” the civic theatre trust chairman Kevin Moseley said. “Members on the trust have poured in 1000s of hours to get it to this stage.” Fulton Hogan will be on site on January 7 to undertake preparatory work. Marlborough building com-

pany, Robinson Construction Ltd will build the centre and has worked with the trust to make a few changes to the plans since being awarded the contract in September. “We’ve been able to make some modifications that will shave some costs which is great news for the trust,” Phil Robinson of Robinson Construction said. In February work is expected to begin driving into the ground a grid of 72 piles between the

Taylor River and the building site. This is an earthquake safety measure. The design of the new theatre also includes slips in bracing joints which would allow it to move in the event of an earthquake. The new theatre is being built on land next to the Clubs of Marlborough in Hutcheson St alongside the Taylor River. The project is expected to take 22 months.

Stop family violence

Blenheim lights up for Christmas Some Marlburians have gone to great efforts to decorate their homes with lights for the festive season. Shinning brightly, the houses are sure to light up your evening. There are approximately ten decorated houses in Blenheim, all are well worth a look. Take your family for an evening drive and get into the Christmas spirit. Pictured above is 21 Kim Crescent, and to the left, cnr of Redwood St and Cleghorn St.

A safe, caring and happy Christmas is the wish of Blenheim Police. This year’s campaign message is ‘Family violence is not okay, but it is okay to ask for help!’ Constable Bridget Taylor, Blenheim Family Violence Co-ordinator, urges people to report crime and take positive steps to change violent behaviour. “We are seeing more victims reporting family violence, but we need to keep this momentum going.” Last year Blenheim Police attended more than 60 family violence incidents during December or January. Police are working with partner agencies and community groups to reduce the workload on all the services associated to responding to family violence. Tips from Police for a safe Christmas include setting aside money to cover bills in January and February, not spending more than you can afford, not leaving valuables on display to tempt burglars, moderate alcohol consumption, don’t drink and drive, take time out, and to share child custody time. “Most importantly, if you have any fears of your own or your children’s safety, contact the Police immediately.” Agencies and phone numbers (Marlborough area) 24 hr Police Emergency 111 24 hr Women’s Refuge 03 577 9939 24 hr Victim Support 0800 842 846 24 hr Youth Line 0800 376 6333 24 hr Crisis Team (Mental Health) 0800 800 717 Family Violence. Ex-mayor suggests new library site By Chris Tobin Former Marlborough mayor Liz Davidson says an ideal location for a new library in Blenheim would be opposite the Queen Street park named in her honour which she opened on Thursday. “When I came here there were young people lying on the grass,” she said of the park shortly before she officially opened it. “It’s great for the central city and I can see a new library over there.” Mrs Davidson was referring to the Noel Leeming and No One Shoe building opposite the park, now known as Davidson Place, which is owned by the Marlborough District Council. “And we’d need a cafe in the

library,” she said. Mrs Davidson said she was humbled by having the park named in her honour. She quipped that her daughter had emailed her when she heard the news, saying: “Cool. We’ll be able to bury you there.” Mrs Davidson said the park was an important part in the revitalisation of central Blenheim and she rejected criticism of the development. “Any project of any significance has controversies and you’ll always have naysayers but when the project is opened, attitudes change. We had it with the heated pool in the 1980s and the stadium. You can’t satisfy everyone.” Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman said naming the park

for Mrs Davidson was richly deserved given her extensive work for organisations such as Women’s Refuge and her lengthy time on council. Mrs Davidson served 27 years on council starting with the Blenheim Borough Council in 1983. She was Marlborough mayor form 1995 to 1998. Mr Sowman said the major supporter of the park was Cr Terry Sloan who had been dubbed by council, ‘The Champion of the CBD.’ Mr Sloan thanked Craig Pocock of Craig Pocock Design, the main contractor Fulton Hogan, council staff and other workers for finishing the park in time for Christmas. The project had a budgeted cost of $477,332.

Walk this way By Annabelle Latz Walk your way to better health. It’s that easy. That is the message from Ray Boardman, trainer and director of Walk Yourself 2 Health. He said with 2013 around the corner, there is a good reason to make a new start to healthy living. Consistent exercise, combined with a healthy diet, is the key to gradual and long term weight loss. Walk Yourself 2 Health, which provides close monitoring and support, is designed for people struggling to take the first step, A Tanita Body Composition Scaleswhich measurebody composition, and a Garman GPS/Heart Rate Monitor watch, are both part of the start up package. It is established based on their ability and level of fitness.” Ray said the programme is about providing regular communication, creating the self confidence so people will want to continue their healthy lifestyles, and perhaps take up other sports too. “Taking weight off slowly is the only way for healthy long term success.” Ray said the risk of Type 2 Diabetes and coronary artery disease are reduced significantly with a change to a healthy lifestyle that includes exercise and a healthy diet.. He recommends getting active in groups is a great way to keep up enthusiasm. “The more that people get out walking in a group, the better it will be.

Slip on sun protective clothing, slop on some SPF 30+ sunscreen, slap on a hat and wrap on a pair of sunglasses. Australia and New Zealand have the highest rate of skin cancer in the world, so don’t let this be you.

Summer in New Zealand means getting outside and exploring at the beach, in the garden, and out in the great outdoors. Sue Campbell, National Child Safety Advisor at Plunket, reminds people that outside environments require safety safety precautions to keep young ones safe. “Little children are very vulnerable and very dependent on the good care and supervision of responsible and attentive adults,” she said. Plunket offers the follow adivce for being outdoors this summer: - Stay with a toddler or young child while they explore outdoors. - Some plants are poisonous and soil can also contain poisons. Teach your child never to put anything from the garden in their mouth. - Keep liquids in their original container. NEVER store poisonous liquids in soft drink bottles. - While insect repellents are invaluable to ward off annoying insects, they are not appropriate for children under two years old. Avoid applying to children’s hands as they can place them in their mouths or eye. - Putting away gardening tools when you are finished with them helps keep children safe. It is a good idea, if children wish to garden with you, to buy them their own special-sized, and child-safe, garden tools. - Do not leave buckets or other large containers of water where a young child can reach them and turn anything that could collect water upside down to prevent water collection. A child can drown in water as little as 4cm deep – the length of your little finger.

Story of Wairau Bar ‘internationally significant’ By Chris Tobin A n ex h i b i t i o n o n t h e historical Wairau Bar being held at Marlborough Museum is a hugely important one, says museum chief executive, Steve Austin. “It’s a unique story and is nationally and internationally significant,” Mr Austin said. New Zealand was the last major land mass to be inhabited by humans, he said, and scientific research has indicated the Wairau Bar was the first settlement in New Zealand. It remains one of the most important archaeological sites in the country. “It’s a little bit of a hidden story and one of the things the museum can do to help is present the scientific and technical information.” Working closely with Te Runanga a Rangitane o Wairau, the guardians of the bar, the museum has drawn from its collections to present an exhibition detailing the history of the bar. Also they have drawn on the scientific work undertaken by the universities of Canterbury and Otago. “In the last few years a lot of scientific information has come to the fore. We’ve tried to summarise that story so we can all feel we know how special the site is,” Mr Austin said Mr Austin said Wairau Bar was the site of the first human to be found buried in New Zealand. “A lot of the DNA testing showed four of the people on the bar had childhoods in Eastern Polynesia. The dating for the Wairau Bar is around 1250 and possibly earlier. “These are the first human r e m a i n s k n ow n i n N ew Zealand.

Marlborough Museum chief executive Steve Austin checks out a canoe dating back to the 1870s which is part of the Wairau Bar 1250AD exhibition.

“We don’t know what the arrival sites were, but this is the first settlement. We k n ow t h e s e p e o p l e selected this site because of its central location and the abundance of resources.” Mr Austin said, said as a result of DNA research, the actual departure point of the first arrivals in this country often referred to as Hawaiki, could be ascertained. “It’s extraordinary. Science shows all Maori people are descended from possibly 100 women, perhaps as few as 70.” Extensive archaeological work was done in the 1940s and 50s at the Wairau Bar which Mr Austin said was rather like “treasure hunting.” This approach had changed but he said there was still a lot of sadness for what happened in the past. The exhibition is open to the public and Mr Austin said a formal opening would be held early in the New Year.

The Wairau Bar site The Wairau Bar is a 19ha gravel bar where the Wairau River meets the sea at Cloudy Bay. Human remains and 2000 artefacts were removed from

the site in the 1940s for scientific research. Three years ago the Rangitane reburied 60 of their ancestors at the site.

Hopai Sports Day popular outing By Emily Elliott Many from the Nelson Marlborough region will gather for the annual Hopai Sports day in January. Held in the Pelorus Sound, the family sports and picnic day has been a favourite event for many families since 1920. “It’s one of the few family days left around the country,” Pelorus Sounds Sports Club president, Mike Gerard, said. “We get a lot of positive feedback. It’s something everyone age five plus can partake in.” Two of the major events of the day include the Hopai He Man race, and the giant game of Tug-o-War. There are also boat and jetski races, various water events, 3-legged races, egg and spoon races, sack races, and running races. For some extra fun, grandparents can get involved in the fun GrandmotherGrandfather races. “It’s a good day out in the sounds,” Mr Gerard said. Mr Gerard said one of his favourite aspects about the day is seeing the enjoyment

people get out of participating. “It’s great seeing people doing the old egg and spoon, and sack races. You don’t see that much anymore.” The Hopai Sports day remains a popular event after 100 years, with an average of 800 adults going each year, and an equal number of children. For those aged 12 and older, there is a small gate entry fee, which goes towards local charities. There is a sausage sizzle on the day, as well as a sweet stall, coffee stand, ice creams and drinks. Families are encouraged to bring along a picnic and enjoy the events the day has to offer. Wine and beer will also be served. The mailboat is offering water transport to add to the enjoyment of the day. “It’s an interesting cruise, and a great way to get there,” Mr Gerard said. Alternatively, the Hopai Sports Day can be reached by car. For more information, visit: www. pelorusnz.co.nz/hopai.

Molesworth open for summer

Mussels safe to eat Farmed New Zealand greenshell mussels and Pacific Oysters on sale at supermarkets and seafood retailers are delicious, nutritious and 100 per cent safe to eat. Aquaculture New Zealand chairman Peter Vitasovich has assured New Zealanders they can enjoy locally farmed shellfish these holidays with absolute

confidence. “New Zealand marine farmers operate one of the world’s strictest seafood quality assurance programmes, meeting the standards set by the New Zealand Ministry for Primary Industries, United States Food and Drug Administration and the European Union,” Mr Vitasovich said.

When the road through Molesworth Station re-opens on 28 December there will be some new attractions for visitors this summer - interpretation panels along the Acheron Rd and an East-West walking route are now in place. Facts, stories and interesting information about the Station’s farming history,

its rare and varied plants and animals and the current management of the Station are attractively displayed in shelters at over 10 sites along the Acheron Rd and Tophouse Roads. The new East-West route links the Kahutara River in Ka Whata Tu o Rakihouia (Clarence) Conservation

Park with the Sedgemere Lakes Area in the Molesworth Recreation Reserve. At least 5-6 days should be allowed for the East West Route. The unmarked route, which is suitable for trampers with a high degree of off-track experience and fitness does not require a permit.
