Picton sculler strikes gold Continued from page 1 “He’s not that big, he’s only 5ft 10 now.” Michael watched the big race last Thursday evening at Oxleys Rock Hotel in Picton, with a packed out room of local supporters. “He nearly gave me a heart attack when they were so far back during the race.” Michael said the taller rowers in the other crews had longer reaches, but not the power to follow through the ﬁnal 500 metres.” “When they were getting their medals, he [Joseph] didn’t even come up to the shoulders of the joker next to him!” The following morning Michael discovered an answer phone message on his home phone.

“There was a lot of gobble. At ﬁrst I couldn’t work out what it was, then I realised it was Joseph and his brother and his mum.” Michael’s message to his Olympic gold medal winning grandson is simple. “Well, it’s just well done, that’s about all I can say.” Picton Rowing Club captain Keiran Gaudin said the club and whole community is still buzzing after Joseph’s magic result. “We have to make the most of these things,” he said. Kei r a n hop e d t h a t Jos e ph’s performance would spark inspiration for young potential rowers in Picton. “There can never be too many kids involved in sport around here, especially rowing.”

Keiran thought the feeling of self belief could filter to all ages and sports in Picton after watching their local sports hero Joseph row his way to gold alongside Nathan Cohen. “You don’t have to be from a big school or a bit city to do well at sport,” he said. No final decision has yet been made for how to celebrate Joseph’s achievement, who arrives back in New Zealand on August 15. It was a great Olympic campaign for the rowers in Marlborough, from medals won and from personal achievements. Fiona Patterson and double sculling partner Anna Reymer finished fifth in the A Final. Robbie Manson’s quad finished in seventh place, after winning their B

Final. Sean O’Neill and his four finished ranked 11th in the world. Louise Trappitt was unfortunate to suffer a broken oar with her quad in their first race, but a fantastic effort in the B final gained them a seventh overall finish. Marlborough’s rowing coach John Robinson, whose womens’ pair Juliette Haigh and Rebecca Scown claimed bronze, was John’s first Olympic medal as coach. Marlborough’s Michael O’Keeffe, performed solidly as goalie for the Olly Whites. He produced a solid effort between the posts to keep his side to a 1-1 draw with Egypt.

Flooding repair work begins Clean up work has begun following extensive flooding in the region last week. Marlborough District Council rivers and works staff were out with the heavy machinery on Monday, beginning the repairs, but Rivers manager Geoff Dick says it’s likely to be up to six months before the tidy-up is complete. “The initial cleanup will only take a week.” It is the repair and replanting work for landowners that will take longer as they will want to assess the damage and see the different options they can take, he said. The majority of the damage caused by the recent heavy rain has been along the path of the Omaka River which chewed into its banks all the way from Tyntesfield bridge down past Renwick. Fences were taken out, road seal lifted, and at least two vineyards were flooded, putting a hole in the stopbank.

“We’re underway with the channel clearing now, pulling out the tree trunks and other debris, and in places realigning the river back to its channel. “ “If you look at the Omaka itself, it’s very similar to the 2008 floods.” There is probably a bit more damage this time around, even though it was a bigger flood last time, said Geoff. “It wasn’t a huge flood, it was just up for a long time.” Because the rain was situated in the hills behind Blenheim, most of the damage was outside of town, he said. The Taylor River floodway coped with the floodwaters, the storm drains became blocked and had to rely on the pumps, which were effective, said Geoff. Working overseas could create issues By Les Whiteside In last Friday’s Sun we highlighted Colin Murrays story about his pension being stopped. In New Zealand every person over the age of 65 is entitled to the NZ pension. However if you have worked overseas, there may well be complications. For example in Australia the pension is “means” tested. Unlike NZ, you can be a millionaire and still get the pension, in Australia you cannot. Colin Murray had his meeting with Work and Income

on Monday and the Sun can confirm Colin’s pension has been reinstated. The Sun has been told the process is under review. Which means, well we are not too sure, except to say this is a national issue and Colin has lodged a review of the process and the effect on pensioners. The local ofﬁce in Blenheim doesn’t have the knowledge to deal with any issues involving the pension. In Colin Murrays situation a case worker was sent from Wellington.

Like Colin he is also having problems dealing with three countries to ensure he receives the NZ pension. Margaret Becker who worked in Australia for twenty years, has never had a problem receiving her pension.

After two reviews, I just ring Centerlink in Australia, she told the Sun. A local businessman having worked for a short time in Australia got his accountant to write to Senior Services and managed to get the situation sorted after a few anxious moments. And yes he will have to ﬁll out these forms again in two years. Welcome to the pension!

A drum of weedkiller spilled onto St Leonards Rd in Blenheim on Monday morning, causing a temporary road closure. Three 200 litre drums fell off the back of a turning truck, with one breaking and spilling. The drum, labeled Acres G450, contained the herbicide Glyphosate which has the same active ingredient as Roundup weedkiller, but with a higher concentration. The road was opened again at about 3pm.

New record for latching on There was a strong display of breastfeeding awareness last Friday when a new record was set at the annual Big Latch-On. Taking place at the Clubs of Marlborough, the region’s eight Latch On included 52 breastfeeding mothers at the 10.30am countdown, beating last year’s record of 44. The Big Latch-On was held in conjunction with the World Breastfeeding Week, (August 1-7). Catherine Randall from Renwick was back for her second time participating in the celebration, with three month-old Cooper. Seven years’ ago she took part with her daughter Jaimee.

Catherine said it has grown a lot in popularity. “Last time we were all in the Plunket Rooms, there weren’t that many of us.” Sina Holden from Blenheim was celebrating for the second year in a row, breastfeeding 15 monthold toddler Maia, and was nine-months pregnant. “It’s been really good bonding, and it’s so accessible.” Organiser and Marlborough’s Breastfeeding Co-ordinator Huia Crosby was thrilled to see even more mothers than last year, and thanked the midwives. “We have a new Marlborough record!”

Paying vet bills for SPCA By Annabelle Latz Healthy animals do not come cheap, and the SPCA is no exception. Vicky Green has helped the SPCA in Renwick with many of its fundraising ventures, and this time she is organising one herself. On Tuesday August 21 there will be a fundraising dinner/auction at Bamboo Garden Restaurant, and Vicky wants to raise money for better equipment and veterinary treatment. As an owner of a former SPCA cat, Vicky is very aware of the funding need. She said early community support for the dinner’s auction has been really positive. “Everyone has been really supportive and generous.” It costs thousands of dollars every year to vaccinate, de-sex, de-ﬂea, worm, and treat the hundreds of animals that are brought to the SPCA every year. So far this year, 421 animals have

He is healing up well, thanks to the work from Springlands Vet Centre. Peter Ehrlich from Springlands Vet Centre said vaccinating animals is also very important when they are in close spaces. “It’s a high cost, but we try and keep costs down.” All costs incurred at the SPCA are covered by community support. “People should realise that when they get an animal from here, it’s generally in good condition. The SPCA does a great job setting someone up with a healthy animal right from the start,” said Peter. An ‘unallocated’ amount of money will be needed, which will require a loan, after recent funding cuts made by the New Zealand Transport Agency. New discount store By Robbie Parkes The Redwoodtown Hospice store has been a pillar in the opportunity shop community, and a new concept aims to help the cause. A neighbouring shop, vacant for some time is currently being ﬁtted out to set up a discount store, expected to open next week. Manager Marlene Weatherall said the current business, Deja Vu, sells at the top end of the opportunity shop market. “Consequently we give away a lot of saleable items to other charities.” The low cost items donated to the shop will now be sold in the new discount store to cater to the more needy people in the community. “Our prices will be kept very, very low.” Deja Vu has been running for the past seven years, and two years ago knocked down the wall and moved into the space next door, and the idea has kept growing.

“The generosity of the public and the policies we had put into place has made the store really good in raising funds for Marlborough Hospice.” By supporting the shop with goods, the public are supporting the hospice, she said. It takes around 40 volunteers to run the current setup, and it will take another 20 to run this one, said Marlene. Most only come for a few hours, she said, but part of the idea is to increase the number of people volunteering. They have received racks from Red Hot Fashions, counters from the old garden centre down the road, and a free paint job, but the store still needs more ﬁxtures and ﬁttings. Lots of ladies have come in to give a hand with the new venture, and a few husbands have been brought along too, said Marlene. “The volunteers are so loyal to this shop, and they put in much more than they should.”

Blocks of land to the western side of Blenheim are being considered for future residential expansion. Marlborough District Council is revising its South Urban Growth Strategy, a planning project to ﬁnd suitable land which could be rezoned to meet the needs of long-term population growth. Work is being done to identify, investigate and prioritise alternative urban expansion sites after geotechnical evaluation indicated that

several proposed growth areas on the eastern side of the town would be prone to liquefaction risk in the event of an earthquake. Letters have been sent to all property owners advising that the Council may be interested in rezoning their land. Council staff will be available to meet any interested parties to discuss these issues on August 28 and 29. Appointments may be made by contacting the Council.

It’s ridiculous to get rid of car parks for a park when we already have plenty close by. Why can’t it stay the way it is? There are plenty more useful things the money could be put towards.

King Shag populations Rates increase 26% in 4 years Dear Ed, Claims by our opponents that King Shag populations need protecting from our plans deserve close examination. The fact is, the King Shag is not in danger and never has been from salmon farming. This is according to a report seemingly prepared by SOS’s own scientiﬁc advisor Rob Schuckard. The reports says, (King Shag) “numbers appear to have been stable for at least the past 50 years — and possibly over 100 years — which would suggest a long-term balance between recruitment and mortality”. Dear Ed, I own an average house in Blenheim my rates were $1754.58 in 2007, four years later in 2011 my rates were $2208.74 this is an increase of $454.16 or 26% in the four years. My rates this year 2012 will be $2315.07 an increase of $106.33 or 4.8%. Our mayor who appears to have no control over what goes on in Council said in the Sun on 8th June that rates had risen by an average of 3.5%. After striking a rate the Council has reported in the Express on 23 July they are considering raising a loan of

2.46 million dollars to pay for further projects, one being roading. Was this additional expenditure considered in the annual plan process and if not why not. Loans have to be paid back resulting in rate increases next year. As for Mr Dew who is saying let’s get off our backsides and do the work. Is this the same Mr Dew who campaigned in the last local body elections that he would not support rate increases. I think the people of Blenheim should consider his broken promises at election time in 2012. Rate Payer

bitumen and that sort of thing. These costs have gone up by even more than the CPI. Times are tough for everyone and we try always to make very careful decisions about our infrastructure work. But if we hold back too much, it just creates even bigger costs for a future council and ratepayers. Trying to smooth out these rising costs is one of the reasons councils take out loans for some work; it spreads out big capital costs over a long period, reducing the up-front expense. Roading–our Council’s single biggest cost- is a good example where this is done. The proposed upgrades of Middle Renwick Road will have no impact on rates as they will be funded by other savings we have made in the roading area. While I can’t comment in detail on this anonymous ratepayer’s personal situation, I have examined one sample Blenheim property where rates this year will be about $2200 and have risen by $562 since 2007. It’s pretty clear to see why this has happened: • $50 increase in GST imposed by central government. • $193 for water supply upgrade to meet the new standard imposed by central government. • $108 for an upgrade to Blenheim’s sewerage system. • $30 for rubbish collection including kerbside recycling. • $181 for general rates and charges. Remembrance finds reward By Robbie Parkes T he Ma rlboroug h RSA ha s recognised Olivia Sheat not only for the respect she has shown her greatgrandfather, but for her hard work and success too. Marlborough RSA president Ernie Thomson presented Marlborough Girls’ College head girl Olivia Sheat with a cheque on Friday to go towards her future studies. Her great-grandfather fought at Passchendaele in Belgium during World War One, and she wore his medals during the ANZAC day ceremony at Blenheim School this year, where she also sang. “And the RSA stands in appreciation of that,” said RSA vice president Peter Slape. “There’s nothing a retired serviceman appreciates more than seeing a young person wearing medals.” It used to be frowned upon, but it is now seen as a huge mark of respect

for a descendant to represent them this way, he said. “Olivia is the perfect example of the younger generation paying tribute to those who served overseas by excelling at what she does.” “She didn’t get where she is by sitting down and doing nothing.” Olivia has been highly successful in singing and music, and recently returned from a trip to South Africa with the New Zealand Secondary Students’ Choir. She said it was a real honour to have this kind of recognition and community support. “It’s quite special because it’s something that has been handed down and treasured.” She said her great-grandfather would have been proud for her to wear his medals. The money will go towards her courses at Victoria University in Wellington next year.

Creating a buzz Retirement never means you stop succeeding in life, and Jean Coombe is proof of that, as Robbie Parkes ﬁnds out. Leaving her job as a veterinary nurse to retire with her husband John, Jean became bored with home life and sought a new venture. She was allergic to the chemical face creams you would normally ﬁnd. “All the products I bought really did affect me, and consequently I started making my own.” That is where The Honey Collection was born. The Blenheim business produces and sells various types of health products made from natural ingredients, all including honey, now exporting all over the world. Jean and John, with their children Hilary and Nick moved to New Zealand in 1961, from Australia, and Britain before that. Following her retirement, Jean began researching formulas, doing extensive background work on “what is good for this, and what is good for that.” She eventually produced a plain honey face cream which she sold to craft fairs and gave to friends, but that was only the beginning. “Before I knew it, I already had a market.” Jean introduced a Royal Jelly product and a healing cream to the range which included natural ingredients such as Manuka Honey and New Zealand Ti Tree Oil. They were living in Brown’s Bay in Auckland at the time, and soon expanded on the concept. “I had this brilliant idea we would do a craft show.” Jean set it up, and that grew so much that they had people coming from all over the country to

attend, it even became a twice a year event. The family sold their house 10 years ago and left for the South Island, where they still are today. By that time, Jean was selling her products to a range of health shops and businesses. A Chinese man with a view to export had approached Jean, a concept that was daunting at ﬁrst. But, her son Nick and his business partner were looking for a new venture and said they would help her with it. “This is how it started.” Initially, Jean thought her son was not the type for this; he was an outdoorsman, boatie and a duck shooter. “He had a beard at that stage and he was looking quite rugged, but, he proved me completely, and utterly wrong.” “Before I knew it, the place was up and running and he was the sale representative for all of the North and South.” The kitchen sink and Kenwood were soon retired for a more industrious future, a factory on Grove Road, which is still there. “From there, it just went.” “Now it’s really going well and they’re getting new ideas every week.” She said of the whole experience, she is most proud of Nick. “It’s so good from my point of view, I had the idea and started it, and he went ahead with it.” “He’s astounded me.” Despite handing over the reins at this stage, Jean is still coming up with new ideas for products.

Where the volume of water doesn’t matter, like sinks or tubs that aren’t regularly filled up, flow control aerators for taps cost little and can halve the volume of water used while still giving good pressure. • Check your hot water temperature. During winter most New Zealand families spend the majority of their time indoors, and for that reason, your home’s environment and its effect on our health are more important than ever. One of the biggest problems is that our houses are too cold. This can lead to dampness, mould and respiratory illness. This is a particular issue with older homes, but not all new ones are exempt. Numerous studies have shown that insulation and effective heating can make a signiﬁcant difference. How does the temperature of our houses compare with world standards? The World Health Organization recommends a minimum indoor temperature of 18°C, and ideally 21°C if babies or elderly people live in the house. The average daily indoor temperature in the winter for most New Zealand houses is just 16°C. How do cold houses affect health? If house temperatures fall below 16°C, the risk of respiratory illness increases. This is because cold houses are also usually damp, which can lead to respiratory symptoms. Richard John Seddon (above) was born at School Brow, Eccleston, near St Helens, Lancashire, England, on 22 June 1845. His father was Thomas Seddon and his mother was Jane Lindsay. When young he had been a fine athlete. A man of just under 6 ft in height, with exceptionally powerful chest and arms, he ran to fat in middle age, but retained his youthful agility to a degree that was remarkable in view of his corpulence. He was a mighty feaster with little regard for moderation in eating and drinking, and during the last 10 years of his life his weight was never far short of 20 stone. The reform that became most closely identified with Seddon personally was the Old-age Pensions Act 1898, partly because of his determined promotion of it over several years against strenuous opposition, and partly because underlying his interest in it was his long-standing concern for the welfare of ex-miners on the West Coast.

Shelter trimming made easy Tidy hedges, shelter belts and trees will soon be a very familiar feature of the wider Awatere district. Hamish Blackwell, of H Blackwell Contracting, will be hard pressed to ﬁnd much spare time now, with the recent purchase of his shelter tree trimming machine. It will compliment his successful digger contracting business he already operates in the Awatere region. His new machine is capable of topping over 40ft from the ground up, comfortably cutting branches six inches in diameter. Being 4WD, the machine will operate on uneven, soft and wet surfaces, providing a fast and economic method of trimming shelter belts, hedges and tree tops of all sizes and types. Hamish already predicts one of the

busiest spring seasons he has had in a long time, due to the exceptionally wet winter postponing some of his digger work, but said the new addition to his business will take care of any quiet days. “I saw it as an opening, a bit of a spin off to my business.” Requests are already coming in strong for its service. Regular maintenance prevents overhanging branches damaging farm fences and threatening contact with power and phone lines. Hamish said there has been a lot of local enthusiasm for his new business venture. “When I get the machine out of the shed there is always curiosity and interest - hopefully a sign of good things to come.”

The grand old bridge of Seddon Right: The new road bridge officially opened in November 2007. Alongside is the old road/rail bridge which is still used by the railway.

The Awatere Valley includes Dashwood, Seddon, Lake Grassmere, Ward, Wharanui and Molesworth Station. The Awatere (meaning fast flowing) River is a large river flowing through Marlborough. Flowing along the trace of the

active Awatere Fault, it runs northeast through a straight valley to the west of the Inland Kaikoura mountains. It flows for 110 kilometres from its source in the mountains to reach Cook Strait close to the town of Seddon.

The original road/rail bridge was completed in April 1902 and ofﬁcially opened on the 10th of October 1902. The day was declared a public holiday in Blenheim and 1500 people travelled to Seddon for the opening. The opening ceremony was carried out by Sir Joseph Ward, Acting Premier and Minister of Railways. The town of Starborough was renamed Seddon at this ceremony. The bridge was designed by Peter Seton Hay and built by the contractors Scott Bros of Christchurch

for £22,500. The addition of the wind barrier increased the price by a further £1,118. Building began in April 1899, taking three years to complete. In comparison the new road bridge cost about $15,000,000 and took HEB Smithbridge less than two years (including the approach roads) to completion. The wooden decking was removed from the old road bridge partly because of the danger to pedestrians and cyclists and the annual cost of inspection was deemed to be too high.

Edible gardens sprouting By Robbie Parkes The green-thumbed students from Spring Creek School are on track to creating their own edible garden. The school entered the Tui School Garden Challenge, a national competition that received 300 entries on opening day. The aim is for students around the country to help create an edible and sustainable garden for their school, with prizes up for grabs for the best gardens. The ﬁrst 200 to enter won a garden starter pack from Tui and Mitre 10 Mega, and the Marlborough school was amongst that group. Glenda Doppenberg runs the programme as well as classes teaching the kids about healthy, sustainable ideas every Friday. “We’ve done basically 99% of our own fundraising because the fact we’re such a small school.” For the past 6 months the students have been raising money to build a new garden enclosure. It will be a 9.2m long, by 4.6 m wide enclosure, and weather permitting, will hopefully be built the weekend after next. Glenda said a huge part of the idea is that the kids are learning about these concepts, which seems to be working. “They absolutely love it, a lot of

the children have adopted having gardens at home too.” “We want them to grow up and not think peas just come out of the packet.” Over 30 students from two of the older classes at the school are taking part in the challenge. The children have introduced their own composting system, are exploring different ways of recycling, and the new garden will run completely off collected rain water. “We’re making a difference, and to the kids that is gigantic.” Glenda said the support from Mitre 10 Mega has been amazing. The Spring Creek Playcentre are also on board with the edible garden idea, and have been working hard on their own projects.

Time to massage Story and photo by Annabelle Latz Plenty has changed since Lin Heywood began her trade as a massage therapist. It was 25 years ago when Lin completed a Diploma in Swedish and Remedial massage from her Picton home. And she is ready to give her business a new lift. Lin’s husband Mike had a bad back, and also suffered a heart attack when he was in his mid thirties, so Lin was inspired to both help him, and take her skills into the community. “Interest was steady, but it was early days in Marlborough for that kind of thing.” She also completed a course in Naturopathy. Lin continued being loosely involved in the industry, until life changed dramatically four years ago when Mike was hospitalised in Blenheim after an early onset of Alzheimer’s disease. Lin spent endless hours by his bedside, before he passed away just before Christmas, aged in his late sixties. “This is now giving me another focus. I was sitting here twiddling my thumbs, dwelling on things.” Lin is still involved in the Alzheimer’s Society, praising the support she received when Mike was being treated. “As long as I have the time, I’ll be there to help them now.” Lin has recently completed a refresher course in Swedish and Remedial massage. “When I started off it wasn’t totally unheard of, but it wasn’t that well known. I think now there is a bigger awareness for therapy like massage.” A popular complaint from people is sore shoulders, necks and backs, while some people like relaxing massages. “I adjust the touch to suit the person’s build and needs.”

• 1/2 chicken, chopped into pieces, OR 4-6 chicken pieces, thighs, breast, or drumsticks • Optional vegetables: 1-2 cups chopped eggplant, bite-size pieces, 1.5 cups cherry tomatoes • Generous handfuls of fresh coriander, basil, and slivers of red chili for topping JUNGLE CURRY SAUCE: • 1/2 onion, thinly sliced • 3-4 Tbsp. galangal OR fresh ginger, thinly sliced • 1 Tbsp. green peppercorns (these come packed in a jar with vinegar available at most Asian/Chinese food stores)) • 2 Tbsp. fresh or frozen lemongrass, minced

• 6 cloves garlic • 6 kaffir lime leaves, cut into slivers with scissors (available frozen at Asian stores) • 1 Tbsp. chili powder (regular North American type from your supermarket) • 1-2 fresh red chilies, OR 3/4 to 1 tsp. cayenne pepper, to taste • Juice of 1/2 lime • 2.5 to 3 Tbsp. fish sauce • 1/2 to 1 tsp. shrimp paste OR 1 additional Tbsp. fish sauce • 1 can coconut milk • Optional: 1-2 tsp. palm or brown sugar, to taste

Method 1. While this curry is traditionally made in a wok (by simmering the meat in the sauce), I find it’s easier in the oven where it won’t burn or dry out. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. 2. Place all curry sauce ingredients in a food processor. Process well to form a sauce. *Re: shrimp paste: If you paste is very thick/dry, only 1/2 tsp. will be enough. If it’s moist and falls easily from a spoon, add up to 1 tsp. For smaller choppers: Add only a little of the coconut milk - just enough to keep the blades moving. The rest can be added later, along with the chicken. If you don’t have a food processor or chopper: finely mince the ingredients and then stir all together in a bowl with the coconut milk to create the curry sauce. 3. Place the chicken in a casserole dish and pour the curry sauce over top. Mix together. Cover the curry and place in the oven for 1 hour. If adding

vegetables: Remove curry after 45 minutes and add your vegetables, then return to the oven to bake for 15 more minutes. 4. Check the curry after 1 hour, ensuring the chicken is well cooked. If needed, return to the oven for another 10 minutes or until chicken is well done. 5. Before serving, stir sauce well and do a taste-test. If not salty enough, add a little more fish sauce (1/2 Tbsp. at a time) . If not spicy enough, add more chili or chili sauce. If too spicy, add a little more coconut milk or plain yogurt. If too sour for your taste, add a little more sugar. 6. Serve right in the casserole dish, or for more formal occasions, scoop the curry into a serving bowl or onto individual plates. Top with generous amounts of fresh coriander and basil, and thin strips of fresh red chili. Also, a small ‘branch’of green peppercorns can be added as a pretty garnish. Serve with plain rice or my Easy Coconut Rice. ENJOY!

Warning to NZ about GE New Zealanders should ask searching questions about genetic engineering said an Australian farmer at Blenheim’s Farmers Market on Sunday. Julie Newman, West Australian grain farmer and a member of the Western Australian grain council said the Australian experience was that advocates for genetic engineering lacked credibility. “The promotion was littered with lies as to beneﬁts, full of false promises and failing to tell farmers and the public of the high risks and the serious market risks since many consumers don’t want a bar of GM.” She said the promotion for introducing GE in Western Australia had been a deceitful col laborat ion bet we en departments and politicians in conjunction with commercial interests. GM produced canola did not sell well because of market resist a nce. Conse quent ly

canola’s price had to be dropped $50. In one case legal action has been taken by a farmer whose crop was contaminated by a neighbour’s GM crop. Victorian canola farmer Bob Mackley also spoke telling of his farm that was contaminated with a neighbour’s GE canola. In one case in Western Australia, organic farmer Stephen Marsh took Supreme Court action to sue his neighbour for economic loss as a result of the ﬁrst farmer’s loss of organic certiﬁcation and therefore loss of income from the crops that he grew on his land. Introducing Julie Newman and Bob Mackley, Green MP Steffan Browning said there was a “planned, quiet but steady push” to bring GE into New Zealand. The introduction was being done with GE ryegrass. Steffan Browning said GE would erode New Zealand’s “clean 100% pure” image, a vital brand for exports.

Now ranked world number 52, she was seeded fifth for the last weekend’s tournament in New Plymouth. Beating the tournament’s fourthseeded rival world No. 45 Amanda Landers-Murphy in the quarter finals, 3-2, Megan continued to the semi-finals against the tournament’s top seeded Waikato’s Jonelle King, losing in straight sets, after a solid battle. Jonelle won the tournament. Megan was representing Canterbury Women’s in the national teams competition, which was being played on Monday and yesterday, where her team finished third.

Renwick join Golden Oldies By Robbie Parkes Who says rugby is a young man’s game. Even with their sporting days behind them, a lot of older men are eager to hit the field and enjoy a cold beer afterwards. The Woodbourne Tavern Renwick Valley Vandals played their first official game in the Golden Oldies rugby grade on Sunday. The idea behind it is that men 35 and over can get out for a fun game without all the competitiveness that could leave them injured on the sidelines. It has been going for 11 years in Marlborough and Ray Haggland of the Marlborough Musseleers has been involved for six of those. “It’s all a bit of fun, no one ever wins,” he said. The Musseleers faced off against the newly formed Renwick side,

Many helping hands for Sophie Gilchrist Story and photo by Annabelle Latz

Rachel Chisholm has been keeping her hands very warm and busy at Springlands Lifestyle Village, in a bid to raise money to help Sophie Gilchrist. Sophie, five years’-old, from Renwick, has been living at Ronald McDonald House in Christchurch with her mum Michelle, and dad Bryan for nearly a month, after being diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in Wairau Hospital on July 9. Rachel, 97 years’-old has been putting her many decades of crocheting and knitting to excellent use, and has put forward a number of scarves and hot water bottle covers, for people to purchase with a donation. “I want to wish the Gilchrist family all the best.” Rachel always has “something on the go,” with her craft, including rugs which she gives to family and friends. Come into The Sun, and on the front desk is a number of pieces to purchase, thanks to Rachel, to help Sophie. Michelle said the family has been “blown away” by the community support in Marlborough.

Sophie Gilchrist “People we don’t even know are willing to help in any way.” Michelle said the family is staying positive. Sophie is still receiving her weekly chemotherapy at the Christchurch Hospital Children’s Haematology Oncology Centre. Tomorrow Sophie has her ﬁnal bone marrow aspiration, which is the removal of a small amount of this tissue in liquid form, for examination. “It’s going to be a big few days,” said Michelle.

Sophie has been enjoying talking to her big sister Izabel on the phone. “Sophie is doing really well. Whenever we’re going to the hospital she is very relaxed about the whole situation.” Michelle and Bryan are conﬁdent with the knowledge of a 90 per cent recovery rate from this form of cancer from healthy children like Sophie, and Sophie’s positive response to the chemotherapy. “At this stage, it’s going okay,” said Michelle.” The Blenheim Pippin Unit, which is run under the Girl Guiding New Zealand organisation, is holding a Bike-A-Thon on Tuesday September 18, and all proceeds will go be given to the Gilchrist family.
