PROOF IS IN THE BILLING: Chris Newcombe says he has nearly halved his power bill since changing to Pulse Energy.

Power bill halved By Damian George

Big raps for cricketer The rise of local cricketer Ben Wheeler.

A local man says he has nearly halved his power bill since switching to energy provider Pulse Energy from TrustPower three months ago. Chris Newcombe says his power bills have been “fantastically lower” since making the move, dropping from $250 a month to less than $150, and his usage has remained

largely the same. “I’ve had boarders here - I’ve had five people in the house at times,” he says. “So I’m not using any less electricity than I was before.” Mr Newcombe says the key to his saving has been the 15 per cent discount on weekend power usage he was offered by Pulse, which convinced him to switch retailers. “Because I was having a few people here

that were working during the week, they tended to use the most power on weekends, so that scheme suited me perfectly.” His move came just prior to the $15 million government fund released this month to promote to consumers the benefits of comparing and switching energy retailers. The dead seals also included 13 females and two bulls. Other live seals have injuries that suggest they were also struck. DOC South Marlborough Area Manager Dave Hayes said the condition of the dead seals suggested whoever was behind the seal attacks had carried it out over

TrustPower hits back By Damian George Electricity provider TrustPower has hit back at figures showing them to be the most expensive retailer in Marlborough, saying the accuracy of the data is questionable. The Sun last week published figures provided by energy comparison site ‘Switchme’, showing TrustPower to be nearly $15 more expensive on average than any other retailer. TrustPower community relations manager Graeme Purches says the company has so far refused to register with Switchme, citing “serious concerns about the accuracy of the site. “Switchme operates on the basis that retailers pay them $50 for each customer switched to them using the site, he says. “In other words, the more people that switch, the more money they make, so they have a vested interest in encouraging switching. He says TrustPower feel fellow energy comparison site ‘Powerswitch’

are more reliable, but can also be misleading. “Earlier this year, [electricity provider] Genesis got pinged by the Advertising Standards Authority [ASA] after its staff used Powerswitch to undertake a pricing comparison with TrustPower, which the authority found was grossly inaccurate. “I guess somebody should ask why the same does not apply to an operation such as Switchme. Mr Purches also says the figures ignored TrustPower’s cheapest rates - loyalty rates which approximately 65% of its customers are on. Switchme project manager Brett O’Donnell says the site receives commission when customers switch to some retailers, but not all. “The commission varies but is typically around $50 per signup, he says. “This is to cover the costs of our administration and support staff answering customer queries and processing signups. “Powerswitch offer the same service

with five year contract], TrustPower are still the most expensive retailer in Marlborough. “I personally stand behind the facts provided and can verify they are 100 per cent correct, he says. The Sun has spoken to three other energy companies registered with Switchme - Genesis Energy, Contact Energy and Pulse Energy - who all say they have no problem with the accuracy of the site.

as Switchme. However, they receive $1.5 million per year of government funding. The government this month released a $15 million fund over a three-year period to promote to consumers the benefits of comparing and switching retailers. It came after a ministerial review estimated consumers could save an average of $100 a year by switching to the cheapest available retailer. “So it is not just Switchme that wants customers to switch electricity retailers. Mr O’Donnell says TrustPower figures in the comparison were based on the ‘TrustPower Friends’ plan - neither the cheapest nor most expensive. “It is important to note that, even when we use TrustPower’s cheapest plan [Friends Xtra

Matt’s family begins to pick up pieces

Matt Heagney.

By Celeste Lodewyk Former Shapeshifters bar co-owner Kevin Robert King was convicted of manslaughter in the High Court at Wellington last Thursday. Mr King was found guilty of the death of 24-year-old Matthew Heagney last August much to the relief of his parents Pat and Pam Heagney. “At first the verdict didn’t make a difference to us, it wasn’t going to bring Matt back but as the trial went on we welcomed the outcome, Pam said. When the jury delivered their verdict Pam said one of her first reactions was surprise. “We were surprised. The trial could have swung either way especially as no other night club bouncer had ever been convicted, but overall Pat and I are happy with the outcome, she said. During the trial Pam said it was particularly upsetting that Mr King did not look sorry or show any remorse. “He has never given us an apology or shown any regret for his actions.

Matt was a very special person who didn’t deserve to have his life cut short, King has no idea what he has done to us, Pam said. Following Thursday’s verdict Mr King was released on bail until sentencing on February 9, 2011. Pam and Pat will be present at the sentencing. “We hope the justice system makes an example of him so it doesn’t happen to anyone else. We hope it makes the training of night club bouncers compulsory, not just any backyard training, she said. The Heagney family is now planning to put the trial behind them and begin to “pick up the pieces. “This has been really hard on our family and if it wasn’t for our friends and Matt’s friends we would never have got through this. “For us it’s something we had to see through. It’s been a hard two weeks so hopefully this can help us carry on, Pam said.

Woman urges landlords to be more vigilant...

IN A MESS: Local woman Sandra McNeilly wants to warn fellow landlords to be vigilant when choosing tenants.

By Damian George A local woman is urging people to be cautious when choosing who they let their properties to after her tenant trashed the house he was living in and took off without notice. Sandra McNeilly, who bought a house in Meehan Street with her husband at the start of the year, says the man had been “around eight to ten weeks behind on rent payment before eventually fleeing from the property. Among the items left in the filthy house were a slow cooker containing food which appeared to be days old, and a homemade ‘bong’ [marijuana-smoking device] which was filled with urine. Mrs McNeilly says she paid the

their tenants - the first person they signed decided he no longer wanted to move in on the day he was due to take up residence, while the two women that followed had to be evacuated for excessive noise. She says the damage from the latest debacle will take some time to repair. “First of all we’ve got to clean up - I’d say it’d take us about a week to get it habitable again. “Then it could easily be three weeks before we can get anyone in here, and of course there’s all the back rent. “I’d just say to people to be careful because this mess could be coming to your house.

price for being too trusting of people. “We kind of expected people to live how we do - pay their bills and pay their rent and live like a human being, she says. “But of course that was a very green view of the world. She says fellow landlords should see the warning signs and take action as soon as rent payments start to be missed. “We shouldn’t have given him the chance once he got behind. I think that’s the lesson - once they get behind, just pounce and don’t give them any second chances. It is not the first time she and her husband have had trouble with

judges they deserved to win a trip home for the Christmas period. In her pitch, Mrs Woolery says she “really wants to pull the leaves off the kowhai tree and make it rain kowhai leaves...take the kids berry picking the day before Christmas...and, most importantly, stock up on marmite. The 100 winners were due to arrive in Auckland early this morning. - The Sun will be catching up with Donna this week.

By Damian George A former Blenheim woman now living in California has won a trip back home to reunite with her family as part of Marmite’s ‘bringing home the Kiwis’ campaign. Donna Woolery was one of the 100 New Zealanders from all over the world to win an online competition set up by the New Zealand company to celebrate its centennial year. Marmite put the call out earlier this year inviting Kiwis living abroad to convince

from the Springlands School Choir and Tom Knowles along with PomPom the Clown, Ronald McDonald and of course Santa! This will be followed by the parade which begins at 2pm.

Recycling rules confusing

WHAT’S THE DEAL?: Local man Richard Winstanley is angered much of his recycling was not collected.

By Damian George A Blenheim man says rules about recycling need to be made clearer to the public after he returned home last Wednesday to find most of the items he had put out for collection were still sitting on the footpath. Richard Winstanley says he put out six plastic bags filled with various items he thought were recyclable, but was told by the council many were not. Among the items was an Avon hand cream which stated ‘please recycle’ on the back, yet the item was in fact not suitable for recycling. He says the information given to people about which items are recyclable

and which are not are confusing. “I thought anything that had that diamond [recycle] symbol on it was supposed to be recyclable, he says. “But apparently it needs to have a diamond plus a number. How many people know that!? The loose items were collected, but the plastic bags tied together with a piece of string were not, something which appears contradictory, he says. “The pamphlet they give you shows most of the stuff wrapped in plastic bags, but plastic bags can’t be taken. Marlborough District Council Waste Resource project manager Willi Borst says the information provided to customers is

adequate and does not need to be amended. “The leaflet clearly states the symbol needs to have a number one to seven in it. Most people are doing the right thing, she says. “The only reason we want the newspapers to be bagged is because on a windy day we don’t want them blowing around. “It was because there were plastic items in with the papers that we didn’t accept them. Hand creams are not accepted because they tend to still have contents in them, she says. “We can’t afford to have remnants in the plastic because when we make the bale we press the items and it makes a huge mess.

This logo is behind the confusion Richard faced when he attempted to recycle this packaging.

“Last year the most popular request was gaming equipment for boys and mobile phones for girls. We’re keen to hear what Kiwi boys and girls will be looking for under their Christmas trees this year, says Santa.

Val’s Christmas lights bigger than ever By Celeste Lodewyk Renwick woman Val Alcorn has just finished putting up 24,127 Christmas lights around her home at 6 Kowhai Drive. Last year Val says she put up around 17,000 lights but after exceeding 24,000 she is still putting bags of lights away. “I simply ran out of room, she laughs. Open to the public, Val has decorated her front garden with Santa

displays and various decorations and delights in seeing the looks on people’s faces. With sidekick Blaze by her side (Jack Russell), Val has been decorating the outside of her house for 15 years. “Every year it gets bigger and bigger and Blaze absolutely loves it when children come to view the lights, she says. As well as being open to the public for viewing Val has installed a donation box with

Val’s Christmas light display will be up for viewing until January 1 and she encourages people to come along to 6 Kowhai Drive at Renwick, and any donations made will be greatly appreciated.

Local company to build new i-Site Local building company Haack Construction has beat four fellow Marlborough companies to be awarded the building contract for the new Blenheim i-Site. Construction is scheduled to begin on January 5 next year, and is expected to be completed by June, in time for the Rugby World Cup. Destination Marlborough General Manager Tracy Johnston

says it is a great result to have a local company working on a project that is about showcasing the Marlborough region. “The new i-Site will allow us to present the region to visitors much more effectively, she says. “We are designing a space that will orientate and introduce visitors to Marlborough through maps, visuals and interactive displays. This

will create a platform to promote our region that is worthy of the experience visitors have when they come to Marlborough. She says the facility plays a pivotal role in encouraging more of the 1.5 million annual visitors to stay in the region. The visitor centre will continue to operate from the historic Railway Station until the new building is complete.

Awards a close call By Damian George Four first-equal prizes have been handed out to the winning entries in the schools category of the Marlborough Environment Awards, held on Friday. Awards coordinator Bev Doole says the standard of projects was so high it was impossible to pick a winner, so the four schools - Spring Creek, Springlands, Whitney Street and Fairhall - all shared the spoils, each pocketing a $500 prize. Spring Creek won the community contribution award for replacing a piece of waste land with an orchard, Springlands’ ‘eco hut’ won the school participation prize, while Whitney Street scooped the environmental benefit award for waste-reducing initiatives. Fairhall School won the sustainability and innovation award for a range of projects including raising money for dialysis patients and applying

“Instead of sitting inside all day with pen and paper doing reading, writing and arithmetic, you are all enquiring and exploring and using your imagination to learn about challenges to our environment and come up with ways to tackle these problems.

Sun readers have their say... Q: What power company are you with and are you happy with them?

Alan Rodgers Blenheim Trustpower. They are far too expensive. But unsure how to go to break the system.

Cherie Butler Blenheim Trust Power until I read the Sun article. It’s unbelievable what they charge.

Dailee Giles Blenheim Trust Power, and they are too expensive.

Lorna McMahon Blenheim Trust Power. Not happy with any companies, they all cost too much.

Shaitarna Gill Blenheim Trust Power, it’s too expensive though. Was with Contact until I moved house and it was already set up with Trust Power.

Tina Connor Blenheim Trust Power. Seems too expensive, but I need to look at other options.

What’s in a name? A brief history: Weld Street With Mark Stevenson First National

Letters to the editor Letters on issues of community interest are welcomed. Guidelines are that they should be no longer than 150 words. They must be signed and a street address provided to show good faith, even if a nom de plume is provided for publication. The editor reserves the right to

abridge letters or withhold unsuitable letters from publication. Send or fax them to the address on page two, or e mail them to news@blenheimsun.co.nz. Please note that your name and street address must also be provided in e mails.

What to embrace Weld Street is named for a man who may fairly be described as Marlborough’s most distinguished parliamentary representative. Sir Frederick Aloysius Weld (1823-1891) was a British aristocrat who emigrated and, along with his cousin Charles Clifford, became a sheep farmer at Flaxbourne. Weld and Clifford brought the first commercial sheep flocks to Marlborough and they are locally honoured for founding Flaxbourne, the first great South Island sheep run. He became MP for Wairau in 1853 but resigned in 1855. On May 21 1858, he again became Wairau MP. He was appointed as Minister of Native Affairs then Premier, resigning in 1865 amongst political turmoil and ill health. (He led the country at a time when there was huge resistance to the strengthening of central government centred in Wellington rather than Auckland, at the expense of provincial rule.) Later he served the British Government first as Governor of West Australia, then Tasmania and finally of Straits Settlements in Asia. The Encyclopedia of New Zealand describes Weld as “one of the founders of New Zealand nationalityâ€?. The entry quotes a description of him as “very tall, slim, and erect, with a handsome, whiskered face, a man of gracious manner and noble character ‌. though he had both ability and energy, he was too trustful to be a good judge of men.â€?

Today I also continued reading the bible column and letters to editor, and wanted to point out that pastor Jeff has only displayed a very unique closeness to God’s word and is sharing it with us. I do hope many of us here in Blenheim follow the verses through his columns to check what he is saying as he has claimed before they are not his own opinions but God’s and he is trying to convey what God’s word has to say in a small passage in his paid column. Some points I would like to make, homosexuality is not proper.

God made us who we are for a reason, not for us to just choose over our own design. The fact that we do choose over our basic design and try to be other than that proves God’s word true, and points out we are sinners, desiring that which is un-seemly. Society has destorted basic things of human nature over the years, hence we have forgotten what truth and real is - e.g. no one actually has to pay for murder anymore. NZ needs to embrace God’s word. T. Wilson

TrustPower gives discount I find it quite misleading the way the various power readings were shown in your newspaper dated 1.12.10. We are a retired couple on the lower user system with Trustpower, our winter heating is via a heat pump. With the benefit of Marlborough Lines Bonus (which is not just for Trustpower customers) our average monthly account was $128.

It appears obvious that Mr O’Donnell did not deduct the 5% Trustpower gives as a discount on the power used plus a further 15% discount on the total account if paid by the due date. I hope your readers have not gone rushing to change their companies after reading the published figures. Yours faithfully D Weston.

Swinging into action Local cricketer Ben Wheeler talks to Damian George about his rise so far. New Zealand cricket’s bowling stocks may look a tad depleted at the moment, but one local pace bowler is part of a promising crop of young bowlers in the region who may one day be the answer to a growing problem. Former Marlborough Boys College pupil Ben Wheeler has already made an impact on the New Zealand domestic scene, taking nine wickets in Central Districts’ first-round Plunket Shield win against Auckland last month, including a six-wicket haul in the first innings. The 19-year-old left-armer, along with fellow young quicks Doug Bracewell [20], Adam Milne [18] and Mitchell McClenaghan [24], has attracted the attention of former “I try to swing New Zealand bowler Shane Bond, the ball quite who has jumped on board as assist- a bit - swing’s ant coach of the probably the Central Districts team for this sum- best asset mer’s Twenty20 campaign. I have Wheeler says Bond has been invaluable in assessing how to bowl to different players, but it is Wheeler’s stock and trade delivery - one which has drifted from the international game over time - which carries the most cause for optimism. “I try to swing the ball quite a bit - swing’s probably the best asset that I have, he says. “I generally swing it in to the right-hander but I’m also working on one which comes back in to the right-hander aswell. His bowling approach has obviously worked for him thus far - he made his debut for the Marlborough team as a 16-year-old, before making his first-class debut for CD at the end of last season. That was on the back of taking the new ball for New Zealand at the Under-19 Cricket World Cup in Christchurch in January, where he took nine wickets as New Zealand reached the quarter-finals. He says having team-mates in the CD side

who are around the same age-group has made the step up a smooth one. “It’s awesome to have the good young mix that we have, and to have guys your own age to hang out with. “But it’s also good to have the older guys who can show you the ropes as well. Judging by recent New Zealand Under-19 alumni to have gone on to represent the Black Caps - Kane Williamson, Tim Southee and Martin Guptill among them - it is not unrealistic to think Wheeler may one day don a black cap. For now, though, he is concentrating on cementing a permanent spot in the CD side. “We have our regional coaches who we keep in contact with, who are always talking to the national selectors. I think they are keeping a close eye on the guys who have been earmarked. “But my aim at the moment is just to play as many games as I can and hopefully push for a contract with CD next season. He says the team have set some lofty goals for the current season, including retaining the Twenty20 title they won last year. “We obviously want to back that up and win a place in the Champions League again and hopefully improve from last year’s performance, he says. “But we also want to do well in the fourday stuff - we consider ourselves to be quite a good four-day side as well.

Ulysses club to ride for Christmas By Damian George More than 200 motorcycles will be making their way through Blenheim on Saturday as members of the Marlborough Ulysses Club collect Christmas donations on behalf of the Salvation Army. The bikers will travel from Woodbourne Tavern, through the town centre, and on to Blenheim School, where they will pass on the gifts to the Salvation Army.

Marlborough Ulysses Club publicity officer Murray Brooks says people can donate items either at the school, or stop the bikers as they pass through the streets. “We will also be stopping inside the town boundary incase any scooters or other bikers want to join in, he says. The club have been supporting the Westport Ulysses Club with their annual ‘toy run’ for the past 20 years,

but it is just the second time it has happened in Blenheim. They will also be selling specially minted badges for the event. Club coordinator Jane Laing says they are not are just looking for toys, but any sort of presents or even food which will help families over the Christmas period. The journey will begin at 1pm, and will be followed by a barbecue for all participants at the destination.

The fleet: Marlborough Ulysses Club coordinator Jane Laing [left], oldest member Brian Peters [82] and member Louise Pearce will be part of the club’s ‘toy run’ on Saturday.

A Precision Team For 10-years Precision Auto has been operating locally. Owned and operated by Stephen and Tamika Lewer, Precision Auto has been at its Auckland Street premise for three years, offering motorists a one-stop shop for almost anything auto related. “We are one of the closest general workshops to the central business district, meaning people can leave their car here and walk into town to do their shopping while they wait, Stephen says. “We are not only conven-

iently located, but we can do anything including engine overhauls, Warrant of Fitness checks and repairs plus much more. What’s more we have the franchise for Marshall Batteries and sell Kuhmo Tyres. Stephen’s history with the business dates back to the age of 16-years when he began as an apprentice. He trained and qualified as a mechanic before going on to run the workshop. After deciding on a change of direction, Stephen and wife Tamika purchased the business and expanded their team to include qualified

mechanics Michael Parkes and Chris Brew. Since relocating to Auckland Street, Precision Auto has had most of its equipment upgraded to incorporate an up-to-date diagnostic computer for modern electronic cars. So for repairs, overhauls or maintenance on any type of engine call in and see the Precision Auto team. “Whether you have a problem with a truck, trailer, boat, light vehicle wheel alignments and light engineering, contact us today and we will find the right solution, Stephen says.

Riverlands School support Jacqueline

Volunteer Jean Griffiths hangs up a message and bauble on one of the two Remembrance Trees at Centre Point Mall in Blenheim.

Want to remember a loved one at Christmas? The Blenheim Beavertown Lions Club is again running their annual ‘Remembrance Tree’ fundraiser for Hospice Marlborough. Located in the Centre Point Mall in Blenheim, two Christmas trees were set up on Sunday for the public to place a

special message in memory of a loved one. The cost is a $2 donation for a memory label and Christmas bauble, with all proceeds going to Hospice Marlborough. The trees will be up for two weeks, 10am to 4pm this week and 10am to 5pm next week, finishing December 18.

Christmas gift donations There is a pile of Christmas gifts at the Sun office growing by the day. Sun readers have been donating gifts to the Open Home Foundation in Blenheim which works with around 100 children aged from birth to 17-years. Simply donate a brand-new Christmas gift to the Sun office in 72 High Street, Blenheim, and we

will pass it on to less fortunate children who may not always have their own gifts to unwrap on Christmas morning. Anything from board games to trucks, torches, chocolates and dolls. We find that teenage boys and girls especially like deodorant, shampoo and soap sets so once you know that it’s easy to buy for them.

Role Reversal: Riverlands School student Nikki Barnes [left], teachers Abby Lyons, Roby Hurren, Blair Walker, Shirley Ramsay and Maree van der Burgh, and student Hannah MacDonald swap uniforms as part of a mufti day to raise money for Jacqueline Wyatt.

Riverlands School teachers and pupils swapped uniforms last Thursday as part of a mufti day organised to raise money for their injured student Jacqueline Wyatt. Jacqueline had been riding to the school with fellow student

Hannah MacDonald last month when she collided with a truck, and is now recovering in Auckland’s Starship Hospital. Principal Dave Parsons says the school raised nearly $400 on the day, which will go into a Westpac fund set up for the Wyatt family

following the accident. “This gives a chance for the kids to do something themselves, he says. “A lot of adults have had their chance to do things so this gives the children an opportunity to contribute.

Police were initially called to contain the 36-yearold offender after several complaints from motorists about him jumping out onto State Highway One and hitting their vehicles. Police say the man twice refused to drop his weapons when he was told, before hurling the stake at the dog handler, which struck him on the collar bone and left him unable to move his left arm. The man then attacked the dog which had been released to assist. A truck driver whose parked truck was earlier the target of the stake-wielding man restrained and handcuffed the offender while the officer was Police say it was initially suspected the officer had suffered a broken collar bone, but was later cleared. CELEBRATE THE COMPLETION OF OUR SMALL BREED DOG KENNELS!

T

Twisted Whiskers owner Ann Lowe has been mad about animals since childhood. It has been her dream to open her own cattery and small breed dog kennels and last year she realised that dream. Ann purchased a property at 803 Wakamarina Road in Canvastown last year and quickly began building her business. She converted an existing building into a specialized cattery with 10 pens and small breed dog kennels which has four pens, capable of housing two dogs each. On the property Ann has created a special garden

area where dogs can socialise and play. Inside the pens and kennels Ann plays piped background music for the cats while in the kennels dogs have a television which is played during the evening. “This helps to relieve stress on the animals by creating sounds similar to what they might hear at home, the background noises help to settle them, she says. Ann purposely caters for smaller dogs to allow plenty of interaction and safety from larger dogs. “I specialise

in the pampered pooch, she says. A qualified vet nurse with a background working for the SPCA and Victory Square Vet Clinic in Nelson, Ann has plenty of experience with animal behaviour and reading body language. “I have also worked in a puppy preschool training people to train their dogs. Working with animals has been a life long passion of mine and when this opportunity arose, I jumped at it, she says. In addition to the cattery

and kennels, Ann also hopes to incorporate out calls to small lifestyle blocks, house visits for people who’s cats are not vaccinated as well as taking in guinea pigs and rabbits in the near future. There are still places available for Christmas so Ann encourages pet owners to get in fast. “Inspections are welcome and I am happy for people to contact me for further information and enquiries, she says.

Scotch offers big city flavour What could be more blissful than relaxing with friends enjoying an evening drink and meal? Scotch Wine Bar & Bistro situated in the heart of Blenheim offers this plus much more along with a selection of Marlborough’s finest wines, boutique beers and an extensive food menu. Owned by Tim Thomas, Hamish Thomas and Josh Scott, Scotch Wine Bar & Bistro first opened its doors on December 13, 2008. With the aim of bringing a big city flavour to Blenheim’s bar scene, Tim and Hamish combined their ideas with Josh Scott of Moa Brewery. “Hamish and I have always wanted to open a bar and after identifying a gap in the market for a bar similar to what you

would find in the big city, we went for it. “Hamish and I have all done a lot of travelling so we had a fair idea of what we wanted to do. We did the interior and layout ourselves including Hamish who had particular input into the layout and interior design, he says. Aside from the drink list, Scotch Wine Bar & Bistro offers an exciting meal range using fresh, seasonal produce – much of which is sourced locally. “We have something to entice everyone including our popular tapas which are great to share with friends as well as our many exciting options including our signature dishes, home made Chicken Croquettes and the Salt and Pepper Squid. “We encourage people to try us out, our food is fantastic, he says.

Rapaura School wins ‘Makeover’ Rapaura School is one of just four schools from throughout New Zealand selected to receive a ‘Treemendous School Makeover’ next year. The refurbishment will see a 400 metre square area, which is currently a wasteland, transformed into an outdoor classroom which will attract local native birds and contribute to a children’s garden art programme. The garden will also enable the school to contribute to the local ‘Tui to Town’ project, in which the council is encouraging the creation of natural habitat to entice the Tui back to Blenheim. Principal Helen Williams says the school, which has a roster of just over 100 students, is delighted to win the makeover. “Planting a native garden will give children the knowledge and skills and we hope will foster the value of conservation and sustainability. The new garden is just one of a number of environmental initiatives the school is currently undertaking. It has recently registered with the Marlborough District Council to become an accredited ‘Enviroschool’ in 2011. The annual programme is a joint initiative by the Mazda Foundation and Project Crimson Trust, and Mazda Foundation chairman Andrew Clearwater says Rapaura School is a deserved recipient. “It is excellent to see schools such as Rapaura placing an emphasis on environmental education, he says. “We’re looking forward to visiting Blenheim in 2011 to transform Rapaura School’s grounds. The other schools chosen for the makeover are New Plymouth’s Spotswood Primary School, Napier’s Westshore School, and Epuni Primary School of Lower Hutt.

Little engine, big result By Celeste Lodewyk After a series of plaguing problems with wiring and a failed clutch press plate, Eastern States Saloon driver Shane Scott (47e) received the top placing out of five local drivers in the DHL Interislander South Island Speedweek. Shane was placed 17th overall on the points table which included 31 of the south island’s top saloon drivers. Alongside Shane, local drivers Paul Cambie, Robert Flood, Daniel Flood and Mark Pengelly represented Eastern States in the nine day series which ran November 20-28. After two bouts of mechanical and electrical failure at the beginning of the series, it was the generosity of Shane’s sponsors which enabled him to carry on through to the end. “When my brand-new clutch press plate failed in the second round at Dunedin I thought it would be over for me. But sponsors Anne-Marie and Andy Walters of ASAP came to the rescue and paid for a new plate and

the machine work. Without them I couldn’t have done it,” he says. During the series, all 31 drivers received the news of the Pike River Mine tragedy. They then rallied together to raise over $15,000 which they formally handed over to Mayor Tony Kokshoorn. “We all lined up on the infield and each shook the mayor’s hand. It was a very special experience and a brilliant thing to be part of,” Shane says. With the Speedweek over with, Shane is feeling “quietly confident” toward the South Island Saloon Car Title being held at Eastern States in March and is still contemplating the New Zealand Saloon Title in January. At the age of 34-years, Shane has been racing speedway since 2003. Beginning in the production class Shane went on to race saloons four seasons later. His current saloon car is based on a 1991 Mazda RX7 Rotary and for a little engine Shane says it goes great.

GOING FOR THE TITLE! SUPPORTING THE TITANS AS THEY CHASE THE NZ STOCKCAR TEAMS CHAMPIONSHIP

Titans to compete for NZ stock car teams title The Eastern States Titans won third place at the New Zealand Teams Championship in December 2008, a feat they hope to better this weekend.

it’s about the title The time has come for the Eastern States Titans stock car team to show what they are made of, says team captain Ricco Gray. The Titans will be traveling to Wellington this Friday to challenge nine of the country’s best teams for the 2010 Stock Car Teams Championship title. In December 2008 the Titans battled their way to third place much to the surprise of previous champions Wellington, Auckland and Palmerston North. “I think in the past they got a shock at how strong we are as a team and I believe with our form and dedication, we are good enough to get a placing - or win, Ricco says. The winner of the NZ Team’s Championship not only wins the title, but also wins the right to host it at their home track.

“It’s not about the prize money for us, it’s about the title and being able to have it here at Eastern States next year. “An event of that scale would be great for our club as well as the community, he says. At the beginning of November the Titans won the South Island Teams Championship, proving the team’s strength. “All of us have put in long hours, sweat and blood to get where we are now. Everyone is happy with their cars, we have a very strong team spirit and work together well on the track so there is no reason we can’t win, he says. Supporting the Titans is a group of sponsors and volunteers who have been working behind the scenes to get the team to Wellington this weekend. “Without our sponsors we wouldn’t be here or have the opportunity to

compete at any of the teams events, so a huge thank you goes out to them. “A big thank you to Jac and Fiona Lammas and team manager Tim Alexander, thank you for all your hard work, organizing and ongoing support. “To all our supporters who travel with us to help at all the events, thank you. And last but not least thank you to all our families who miss their partners and fathers during the speedway season, he says.

Fairweathers Magnum take out final Last Thursday night at Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000 some exciting games were contested in the various grade finals and playoffs of Marlborough Volleyball Club’s Fairweathers’ Competition. The A Grade final saw Fairweathers Magnum who had only dropped one set all season continue their winning form with a triumphant game over their nemesis Wayward Spikers. They took the winner’s crown for just the forth time in the last 13 seasons of play although contesting the final in just 8 of them. Wayward Spikers ensured an exciting game was played as two pretty evenly matched teams traded point for point throughout the first set stretching their opponents to fight for an extra 4 points before Magnum could finally sneak the two point advantage. Set score 28-26. With the first set under their belts Fairweathers Magnum set about building for the kill confidently sticking to their game plan and reaping the benefits with a fine second set win, 25-18. With the game won in the first two sets they didn’t ease off as they haven’t all season although Wayward Spikers tried but in vain to take at least a set in the third. They couldn’t, set to Fairweathers 25-22 and another good all-round performance. Fiafia were a no-show for their 3rd/4th playoff so The Boys took the bronze.
