Temperatures reached more than 34 degrees at the annual Blues, Brews & BBQs on Saturday. The ‘American Indians’ above took second place in the Fancy Dress competition. (Above from left) Danisa Bull, Savanna Adams, Emily Tibbs and front, Tara Beleski, and Bonnie Fenwick.

By Damian George Blues, Brews & BBQs organiser Graeme Boon says he will look at shifting the date of next year’s festival to prevent it clashing with other popular events. Mr Boon says the idea is one of many which will be discussed as part of a debrief in a month’s time, following dwindling crowd numbers in recent years. “There’s a few things we can look at, one of those is the timing,” he says. “It’s a matter of getting a spot that’s not competing with other things. We’ve always clashed with the sevens in Wellington which hasn’t done us a lot of good either ‘cause there’s a lot of similarities with people who

attend that event and ours.” He says organsiers will also discuss the overall content and format of the show, with a particular focus on attracting some bigger bands. “But there’s a whole lot of increased costs that comes with that obviously. Until we’ve gone through it all, we can’t really say. “We did have a good content of blues this year - half played blues and half didn’t, which is about the perfect split.” He says this weekend’s lower turnout, which was about 600 less than last year, could also be attributed to issues outside the organisers’ control. “One of the key factors this year is severe economic stress

with lots of people - it doesn’t matter who they are, and that has an affect. “We’re pretty pleased with how this year went, considering the reduced numbers and how the behaviour was. We got good feedback from people that attended and stall holders, and people were pretty happy.” He says there were a few people that misbehaved, but that was bound to happen in an event of that size involving alcohol. On the plus side, there were no glass-related incidents and glass was well received by participants, he says. SELLOUT: This weekend we have the Wine festival. See page 5 for story.

NEW SCHOOL YEAR: With the 2011 school year now in full swing, Springlands School was among the first to welcome twins to its new entrant roll. Joseph and Thomas Coldwell were “thrilled” to begin school and were even happier to be in the same class. Photo by Celeste Lodewyk.

Butter factory sold By Celeste Lodewyk The New Zealand Transport Association has announced its purchase of the old butter factory property at the SH1 Alabama Road Intersection in Riverlands. The land and buildings were owned by Tracie and Peter Crispin who have been negotiating a sale with NZTA for a number of years. The price paid was approximately $640,000 plus GST, a NZTA spokesperson confirmed. Marlborough Roads manager Frank Porter said by purchasing this property, NZTA is helping to future proof this busy intersection for safety.

“This is a site that has seen a number of crashes, and the purchase of this property will give us greater flexibility to plan future safety improvements that will help to prevent further crashes,” he said. Already NZTA has removed

the hedge which has greatly improved visibility and safety for traffic making the right turn into Alabama Road. Future intersection improvements will be considered, however the timing for these is yet to be determined, Mr Porter said.

The AA is reminding motorists to be extra vigilant on roads as children begin returning to school. AA general manager of motoring affairs Mike Noon says children of all ages are prone at times to running out onto roads without looking. “The start of the school year is a busy and exciting time, particularly at drop-off and pick-up time,” he says. “New entrants have very few road safety skills and, with starting school, they also have less one-on-one supervision than they’ve possibly ever had before.” Mr Noon says older children usually have more road safety knowledge, but can be distracted chatting to friends, listening to iPods, or texting. He says parents should try to avoid parking on the opposite side of the road when picking up or dropping off their kids, as this can also lead to children running onto the road without looking.

Fresh produce proving popular Blenheim’s new fresh produce store appears to have hit the spot with locals, with the business reporting an “overwhelmingly positive” start to their Marlborough venture. Nelson companies Benge and Co Green Grocers and Guyton’s Fresh Seafood joined forces to open the shop on Grove Road last month, and have enjoyed a fruitful return so far. Guyton’s general manager Andy Leonard says he has received encouraging feedback from customers regarding the range of products, freshness and price, as well as location. “We thought it would be a good site in terms of access and it’s proven to be that way,” he says. “We haven’t really done a lot of marketing so we’ve just relied on our location being on one of the main streets in the town.” He says he is grateful for the support the store has received, and hopes it will continue to be a popular shopping destination.

By Damian George New Zealand Post is considering introducing self-service kiosks in stores throughout the country in an effort to shorten queues and speed up waiting times. New Zealand Post communications manager John Tulloch says he is aware of the delays caused to customers by the postal service and Kiwibank sharing the same building, and is keen to improve the service. “We’re as concerned about queuing as customers are,” he says. “What we’re looking at - and this is not just in Blenheim, but nationwide - is new technology. One of the aspects of that would be self-service kiosks, and we could potentially be trying some of those out this year.” The kiosks would enable custom-

ers to send parcels and packages using a touch screen, as well as buy stamps. He says the kiosks have been used successfully by various postal services overseas. In the meantime, “welcome and assist” desks are being introduced to handle simple postal enquiries without having to go to the counter. Kiwibank meeting rooms for people with in-depth queries will also reduce congestion, he says. “The good news is we are looking at solutions and how to solve this problem.” Customers in Blenheim will likely welcome the news, with a number of complaints coming from frustrated people held up at the Scott Street store. Regular visitor Frances White, who uses both the banking and

2 for postal services, says she is regularly delayed by having to wait for Kiwibank customers. Sometimes, you’re standing outside the door to get in,” she says. “There’s too much congestion having two groups of people trying to go to the same counter for different things. She says the number of tills available can often be cut from three to two when a Kiwibank representative needs to handle a confidential query in their office. “If you go to the post shop, you just want to go in and post something, but you can’t because you’ve got to wait for ages to do it. “I’ve heard everyone say it. Even when you’re standing in line, people are getting frustrated and walking out.”

Fate of hospital land awaits parliament bill The Nelson Marlborough District Health Board is awaiting the outcome of a bill in Parliament to remove the ‘reserve’ status from land around Waiaru Hospital in Blenheim. Removing the ‘reserve’ status will allow it to be referred to the Minister of Health Tony Ryall and other agencies for sale approval. The ‘reserve’ status was put on the Wairau Hospital land in 1928. The Board was told at a meeting last week that as this could take some time there was an option to sell the land to the Crown Health Financing Agency (CHFA) which would then oversee the process. This option would realise the benefits in this financial year

which is needed to keep to the DHB on track to the planned deficit, however there would be an estimated financial penalty of $200,000. Board Secretary Mike Cummins said, “As we have factored in the sale of this land to keep our planned deficit to $3.7m we want the best option for the DHB to realise this asset in this financial year. This may mean selling the Wairau block to the Crown Health Financing Agency.” There are a number of Government agencies who now want to capitalise on surplus land but find that the Reserves Act does not allow sale of land. Some sur plus land being

prepared for sale by Nelson Marlborough District Health Board has been approved for sale by the Minister. Minister Ryall approved the sale of land identified as surplus in the Nelson Tasman area however the land has yet to pass through the Treaty Settlement process and the offer back to previous owners. Treaty Settlement and offerback proposals for Nelson Tasman properties are now before Land Information New Zealand (LINZ). Mr Cummins said land not included in the offer-back or Treaty Settlement would be available for sale once the DHB proposal has been signed off by LINZ.

Inquiry into boat accident underway By Damian George A Maritime New Zealand spokesman says it is unclear what action it will need to take following a collision between a Dolphin Watch Ecotour boat and an Outward Bound cutter on Saturday. The organisation is currently carrying out an investigation into the accident in Queen Charlotte Sound, which left eight of the 11 people on the Outward Bound boat injured. The spokesman says Maritime New Zealand are unable to comment on an investigation once it has commenced. “We need to preserve the integrity of that process, and we just need to let it run its course really,” he says. “We always go into these things with an open mind. Only after the investigation has been conducted can we make any decision as to what we think the appropriate course of action is.” The eight injured were left floundering in the water before being rescued by the Outward Bound boat Matakana and the Dolphin Watch boat. The spokesman was not willing to say whether the accident was one of the more severe he had seen. “It’s certainly a serious incident. As to how it compares with others: every accident is a bit different, there are different circumstances and factors. We judge each one on its strength and what the circumstances are, so it’s a bit hard to make comparisons. “We are concerned when these things occur, that is why we have these investigations to determine why they happened.” The incident comes less than two months after an Australian tourist received severe lacerations to her leg when she slid and got caught in the boat’s propeller in the Marlborough Sounds. Maritime New Zealand was involved in the assessment of that incident also.

Sellout for Wine Festival

Twenty-eight years after the first Marlborough Wine Festival, organisers are preparing for another sell-out this weekend. Eight-thousand tickets went on sale for the iconic event. Event Manager Andrea Craig told The Sun on Monday, there were only a hundred or so tickets left. Andrea said ticket sales had really picked up in the last week. Wine Marlborough GM Marcus Pickens says the quality of the festival is renowned nationally and internationally. “There is nothing like the Marlborough Wine Festival anywhere else in New Zealand. Our wine, food and entertainment are world-class and combined with the stunning Brancott Vineyard setting, the festival is viewed as one of the must do events in the country.” Given this is the 28th Marlborough Wine Festival, the organising committee are honouring one of the stalwarts of the event. Gerry Gregg from Pernod Ricard was

one of the instigators of the Festival back in the 1980s. He was instrumental in the establishment of Festival being held at Brancott Vineyard and has been involved in the organisation for many of the past 28 years, holding the position of Chairman for well over 15 of those years. In recognition of his enthusiasm and support of the event, he will be a passenger on board a Nanchang CJ-6a, which will fly over the festival site on the day. Mr Gregg says he was “blown away” by the offer. Mr Gregg said it would be a totally different perspective for him, as for the past 28 years he has been heavily involved “on the ground” at the festival. “I just hope it’s not that fast that I don’t get the time to take some photos.” With 130 wineries based in Marlborough, the opportunity for visitors to try the very best of the region is one of the major attractions.

Family time: [from left] Jessica, Emily, Tasha and Adam Harvey enjoy Music in the Park at Seymour Square on Sunday.

Free music strikes a chord By Damian George Over 100 people turned out to enjoy the opening week of the 2011 Music in the Park event at Seymour Square on Sunday. Event organiser and professional DJ Glen Kirby says, although the hot weather may have kept some people away, he was pleased with the attendance, which reached 120 at its peak. Now in its second year, Music in the Park is an event aimed at families with young children, featuring music from the likes of Dean Martin and Doris Day, to Miley Cyrus and Kings of Leon. The idea is adapted from a London-based initiative, where multi-national company Bloomberg hired a professional DJ to set up camp in an inner-city park and entertain crowds in their lunch hour. “This smaller version is aimed at providing some musical entertainment for locals, and visitors who are looking for something to do on Sunday afternoons,” Glen says. This year, the event will also feature arts and crafts stalls, a children’s treasure hunt, dance competitions and music requests. Proceeds from the site fee will go to Plunket to help purchase new car seats. The event will continue every Sunday in February, and entry is free. Glen says he hopes, following the success of the first week, crowd numbers will build throughout the month.

Can tabs for Kidney Kids Sore fingers and stained hands are just a small price to pay when it comes to helping children on kidney dialysis, as Celeste Lodewyk finds out.

The Blenheim Beavertown Lions Club has been collecting and recycling can tabs since Wynnis Phillips, Dorothy Arcus, Kathy McIntosh, Rosemary Clark and 2001 and have helped to raise around $2000 Raewyn Thomas have been collecting can tabs since 2001 to raise for Kidney Kids. money for Kidney Kids. $2000 may not seem a lot, but when you consider

that it has taken 10-years and more than 700kgs to raise this amount, the efforts of the five women involved are duly recognised. To put this in perspective, one can tab equals one second in the life of a child on kidney dialysis. Over the past 10-years, the Can Tab project has raised more than $100,000 nationwide which assists children who are suffering from kidney disease or kidney failure. “This project is sometimes back breaking, long and hard, but we have a lot of fun, share laughs along the way and enjoy the fact that we are contributing toward something very worthwhile,” Kathy says. Wynnis Phillips, Dorothy Arcus, Kathy McIntosh, Rosemary Clark and Raewyn Thomas first began collecting the can tabs at the Blue Door before moving onto the recycling plant. Now that facility is no longer available to them, the group is now reliant on can tab donations from the public. A number of local schools, community groups, bowling clubs and caravan parks are already on board helping to collect tabs for the group. “If families, groups and organisations can collect the tabs off aluminum cans before throwing them out, we would greatly appreciate your help. “You can take them to the Blue Door or we can come and collect them from you,” Kathy says. If you have can tabs you wish to donate, contact Kathy on 577 9368 or Raewyn on 578 8896.

I can swim and could save myself if I needed to. Parents getting children swimming lessons is important.

I could swim with a struggle to save myself. Lack of supervision, it happens so quickly, people don’t realise potential danger in the sea. All children should learn to swim.

Yes I can swim well. People these days are taking risks, boating without a life jacket is such a sin. People need to be more aware of fishing on rocks.

Yes I can swim and have been able to from an early age. It’s really important to swim, people don’t realise just how much.

I personally think that I have the skills. The price of swimming lessons is just over the top for the young. Maybe parents can’t afford to pay for lessons.

Yes I could swim. I think it’s happening due to the lack of supervision on the parents behalf.

Letters to the editor Letters on issues of community interest are welcomed. Guidelines are that they should be no longer than 150 words. They must be signed and a street address provided to show good faith, even if a nom de plume is provided for publication. The editor reserves the right to

abridge letters or withhold unsuitable letters from publication. Send or fax them to the address on page two, or e mail them to news@blenheimsun.co.nz. Please note that your name and street address must also be provided in e mails.

Correction: The letter to the editor published in The Sun on February 2 entitled “Theatre Approval” was written by Brenda Green; not Colleen Mace, as printed.

MDC decision ratified The Editor, So the Environment Court has finally ratified MDC’s decision on Trustpower’s Wairau Valley Hydo Scheme. Wake up Marlborough and Malburnians, particularly the johnnie - cum - latelies who are now realizing the implications of the ruling by The Environment Court and expressing their shock/horror at the decision. You had the opportunity to have your say but you were too apathetic. You are now too late. You have been conned by a wealthy and cunning “ limited liability” company called Trustpower. The “illusory” temptation of cheaper power and a few jobs for tractors and front end loader operators has clouded your rational judgement. There is an old mountaineering song

called The Ballad of the Idwal Slabs (Idwal is in Wales) wherein you are requested to: “... steer clear of the places that sell you cheap braces - and the fellow that uses soft soap.” Trustpower and Mr Purches in particular, fit the bill perfectly. Shame on you New Zealand, and particularly the people of Marlborough, for being so naive and getting sucked in so easily. Now, the least you can do is wish those that have stood up against Trustpower and the present government and Judge Whiting and his commissioners their best wishes in their continuing efforts to reverse this unpalatable and wrong decision. As they say, the battle may be lost but the war is far from over. Cliff Smith

Thanks to Thirza - the perfect Valentine gift

75 Market St, Blenheim Ph/Fax 578 7897

The Editor, Three weeks ago we were approached by Thirza Davies who explained she was holding an Art Exhibition in her lovely garden over the weekend of 5th and 6th February. She said that she would donate 10% from the sale of any paintings to us at Alzheimers Marlborough. As everyone knows the weekend was extremely hot and humid, however Thirza sold several paintings and true to her promise we received a cheque from her today. We are very grateful to Thirza for firstly thinking of us as a worthy recipi-

ent and to the public who attended her Exhibition. A big thank you to your newspaper for featuring the Exhibition which I’m sure helped to make the weekend a great success. Our committee will be meeting soon to decide how best to use this donation and as always we will be eager to “make life better for all people affected by dementia” in our local community. Cheers Linley Wetton Office Manager Alzheimers Marlborough

Theatre is the future The Editor, It seems no one can remember the facts as printed and widely distributed from the start regarding the proposed new civic theatre project. I believe we are up to the third regurgitation of the information and, still, we get these strange assertions from people that appear to have no interest in the detail that doesn’t suit their particular rant at the time –including new councillors that haven’t done their homework!! Remember the details put forward regarding the Clubs of Marlborough building and the reason for its design on the west wall to accommodate another building? Yes - a hotel or theatre. Reference - Dalliessi and Co Clubs meeting minutes/memories when this was first raised. Less than 10% of the population using the Theatre? Check out the theatre days used per annum, and how many by local artists and /or other activities. The majority of the public against the theatre ??? You mean, surely, if at all, the slim majority of the people that must go off on inexplicable tangents, foregoing knowledge and/or truth in their letters to the editor. Anyone remember that the theatre is run by a non-paid group of Volunteers, and that us ratepayers of Blenheim have had to contribute nothing to its cost recovery by way of council handouts, rates, or concessions to date? Come on, Blenheim, the theatre is the future - if there are to be any white elephants in town, I guarantee the Clubs of Marlborough left to its own devices would be it. Noticed the average age of its disciples lately??? Yes, times have changed. Gordon Lang.

Thrilling response to Havelock fishing competition

PUCKER UP: Krystina Dury’s fishy kiss with this snapper landed her the Fishiest Photo prize at the Havelock Fishing Competition over the weekend.

By Celeste Lodewyk More than 250 avid anglers including adults and children descended upon Havelock over the weekend for the inaugural “Havelock Fishing Competition” event. The local motor camp was packed full for the weekend and businesses all benefited from the visiting numbers. Commenting on the event’s booming success were main organisers Richard Glover, owner of Bow To Stern and Pat Copp, skipper of Last Resort. “It was a fantastic weekend and we are thrilled with the response which saw over 100 boats participate including kayaks through to 50ft launches. “We’re so glad it all went to plan as we spent a huge amount of time and care organising this event and have been careful to keep it as an event which promotes sustainable fishing,” says Richard. Highlights of the entries included the 133kg shark caught by Allan Randell, and the 3.050m long shark caught by Alan Rander. Standout entries in the kids section were Tiana Williams with her “Most Unusual Fish” jelly fish entry, while

Dean Strawbridge took out two prizes with his Heaviest Kawai and Longest Spotty entries. There was also a duck hunt around the sounds with 24 plastic ducks hidden in locations from Havelock to Ketu Bay and a cryptic clue list. This was very popular with kids of all ages who enthusiastically searched the Sounds for them. Live entertainment was well received beginning with a fishy quiz held in the Havelock hotel on Friday night, Karaoke on Saturday night and a range of events and entertainment on Sunday afternoon to support the weigh in. A live band was well received by the audience along with a tug of war display between the Fire Brigade and Tasman Makos team members. St Johns Ambulance had a display & sausage sizzle & Marlborough Marine Radio gave out information on VHF use and safety. “We are already planning improvements for next year’s event and would advise early booking as we will likely limit numbers to around 250 and include a cut off date for entries,” Richard says.

Sun Business Update

Love at first sight IntroducIng chI chI “Love at first sight” are the words used to describe Marlborough by Chi Chi Restaurant owners Matt and Aey Ubolpo. Last year Matt and Aey moved to Marlborough, attracted by the local wineries and stunning scenery to open their first ever restaurant – Chi Chi. Situated where Top Spot Restaurant previously resided, the restaurant reflects a warm and inviting atmosphere through its classy and modern décor. At the front of house Aey runs the restaurant along with a small team of waitresses, while Matt serves up a delicious selection of authentic Thai and Chinese dishes. As trained chefs with nearly 20-years combined experience, opening their own business was a goal they had worked toward for some time. “We came to NZ to study Western cooking and graduated from chef training in Taranaki. “For us food is a true passion and something we really enjoy and we aim to reflect this through our cooking,” Aey says. In ensuring nutritional value and authentic taste, Chi Chi does not use canned vegetables and all dishes are finely prepared without M.S.G. Chi Chi Restaurant is open for dinner seven days a week, and lunch from Monday to Friday.

Opening Hours: Lunch time: 11.30 am - 2.00 pm (Mon-Fri) Dinner time: 5.30 pm - 9.00 pm opened 7 days • Full Licensed & Byo • Takeaway available All the Chi Chi’s dishes are finely prepared without M.S.G. 35 High Street, Blenheim • Ph: 577 5188

A passion for classics By Celeste Lodewyk “I have turned my hobby into a business and work from home, it can’t get much better than that,” says Riverlands man Mark Stead. Mark owns Auto Restorations & Creations which he established in 2001. Using skills forged from a lifelong passion for classic cars and motorcycles, Mark has “loved every minute” spent on restoring old cars back to their former glory. “I have a great setup and the best part is that I can share this with my family,” he smiles. The business specialises in body re-builds on classic and vintage cars, the restoration of classic vehicles, custom made vehicles and children’s hot rods, modified vehicles, panel beating, painting plus much more. Mark’s sidekick, Chris Murphy is a face many have come to know when visiting the “Big Shed Customs”. Chris will soon be celebrating four-years working with Mark since completing his apprenticeship and moving into the position of painter and panel beater. With their combined wealth of knowledge

and expertise, Mark encourages anyone with a “project idea” to visit the Big Shed and have a chat about how Auto Restorations & Creations can help. One of Mark’s latest projects is his own pride and joy, a home built truck based on the original 1940 Ford Cabover. To date he has spent 1500 hours on the build including the use of seven sheets of panel steel for the beginning stages. Some of Mark’s past projects have included classic beauties such as a 1946 Jail Bar, MK II Jaguar, 1966 Mustang, 1978 Triumph Stag, 1968 HK Bathhurst Monaro, 1928 Plymouth Coup plus much more. For a more detailed list of past and current projects, check out the website www.autorestorationsandcreations. co.nz for photos and updates.

The North Group, directed by Patrick North recently purchased MD Freighting alongside Auckland based company Fluidex Transport Ltd.

New owners for MD Freighting By Celeste Lodewyk The North Group, headed by local businessman Patrick North last year expanded its operations after purchasing MD Freighting, based in Riverlands. The purchase was made alongside Auckland based company Fluidex Transport Ltd. The North Group now owns the general freight business, land and buildings while Fluidex has taken over the mussel freight and container

lifting side of the business. Patrick said after searching for an opportunity to expand the North Group’s current freight business, the sale of MD Freighting presented a great opportunity. “MD Freighting is a great addition to our existing Chiller Transport business and we plan to operate both freighting businesses from the Riverlands site later this year,” he said. MD Freighting will continue to operate under its name.

The Spiderman Pest Control A name known in many households, The Spiderman Pest Control now has a new face behind the name. Alan Robinson purchased the business from previous owner Walter McMurtrie on December 1, 2010 and has since continued to offer the same reliable, professional and good ‘local’ service. A builder by trade, Alan says after spending 15-years behind a desk in managerial roles, he began looking for a change of direction. “At the time I was looking to purchase a business and Walter was looking to sell so it was perfect timing,” he says. The Spiderman Pest Control has been servicing the whole of Marlborough and Sounds areas for around 15-years and specialises in the domestic and commercial management of spiders, flies, ants, cockroaches and rodents. Particularly rampant right now are cockroaches and white tails spiders, says Alan. “Cockroach infestations are unfortunately getting worse and worse, but The Spiderman Pest Control can help. Simply contact us today for a free assessment and quote.”

Your baby reads you From early on, your baby is watching your face and learning from your expressions all the time. Your baby is developing the important skill of reading faces and emotions – and you are the first and most important teacher around. With this in mind, you can: • Have fun interacting face-to-face with your baby. Let your baby see and learn about a wide range of emotional expressions. • Since your baby is ‘reading’ the emotions you express, try to provide clear examples of these emotions. Sometimes our faces might say one thing while our voices or actions say another. • Your face tells your child a lot about how you feel. Share the things you enjoy with your baby along with communicating what to avoid.

January sunshine hours down

PART TIME BUDGET ADVISOR The hours involved are two regular days per week 10am -3 pm and additional hours as required. The position involves working with clients, office reception, administration and data entry. Required skills are: •Confident Computer user •Good communication skills •Cultural awareness •Confidentiality •Excellent money management skills •Positive and non judgemental attitude •Ability to use initiative and plan work effectively A pre-requisite is attending our Basic Advisor Introductory Course, which is a 12 module course commencing 4th March, conducted on a Friday evening and all day Saturday, over 4 weekends.

If you thought it was a little cloudier than usual in Blenheim over the last month, you would be right. Figures issued by NIWA in its National Climate Summary show Blenheim recorded one of its lowest number of total sunshine hours in January since records began in 1947. The 217 hours recorded in 2011 is 45 hours below the average January total of 262. NIWA climate scientist Georgina Griffiths says the figures do not include data from January 31 but, even with a full day of sunshine, Blenheim would still be well behind its normal total. The relatively cloudy and coolish month was a result of the persistent easterly winds during the month, she says. Blenheim’s average afternoon temperature was also down slightly, from 23.8 degrees to 23.3. The highest temperature recorded was 30.5 degrees, on January 4.

Bible Answers... with Pastor Jeff Williams

Do you have a Bible question for Jeff? Email us your question at pastor@mbbc.org.nz or post it to us. Full confidentiality is assured at all times.

Q – Follow on from last week’s question about apparent contradictions in the Bible: Is it really important and/or necessary that we must have a PERFECT Bible? A – No – a Bible with mistakes is fine as long as you don’t mind having a God who is a Liar.

Is your God a Liar? Before you get too excited and answer No, how about another question: Is your Bible perfect? These two questions can not be separated because God’s written word is merely the record of his spoken words and therefore of his character and nature. Pretty much anyone claiming to be a Christian is aware that it is impossible for God to lie (Num 23:19; Heb 6:18) and that the Devil is the father of lies! (John 8:44) You should likewise be aware that GOD SAID all his words were perfect, pure and incorruptible (Prov 30:5; Psa 12:6; I Pet 1:23) – as such they can not be added to or taken away from without damage (Rev 22:18-19; Prov 30:6; Deut 4:2). All of this is true because our Bibles are not the words of men, but the words of God (I Thes 2:13). God gave these words to men through inspiration (II Tim 3:16) and keeps them for us today via supernatural preservation (Psa 12:7). In the New Testament, Jesus and all of the other NT writers believed that these perfect scriptures were something that was available and could be read, studied, believed and held in one’s hands – not once did they refer to the scriptures as something that could only be found in dusty manuscripts on library or university shelves that only those with training in original languages could have access to. Do you have a perfect Bible? We do! Our King James Bible has had God’s stamp of approval on it for the past 400 years in the English speaking world when it comes to revivals, missionary outreaches and bringing people to Christ; its manuscript evidence, internal consistency and position as the standard by which all other versions are compared point to something special going on here. It has been scrutinized to death by both lost and saved and has yet to yield up a valid error or contradiction that will hold any water. Its authority is reviled, hated and maligned…but it is still going strong in 2011 on its 400th birthday! Do you have an imperfect Bible that makes a liar out of God? Yes if you use an New International Version that claims Elhanan killed Goliath in II Sam 21:19. Yes if you use a New American Standard Version that teaches we have two Gods in John 1:18 or a New World Translation that teaches Jesus is another god in John 1:1. Many Christians have fallen sucker to the line that one version is “easier to understand” than another while completely missing the point that the Bible is IMPOSSIBLE to understand unless you BELIEVE it (I Thes 2:13) and ARE SAVED with the Holy Spirit living in you to help you understand it (I Cor. 2:12-13). No amount of new translations, revisions and scholarly blah, blah, blah will make scripture clearer – it is prayer, belief and reliance upon the divine Author of a perfect Book that allows those scriptures to come alive and become understandable!

Heritage Day visitors undeterred by heat By Celeste Lodewyk Despite the scorching heat on Sunday, around 1200 people visited Brayshaw Park on Sunday for the annual Heritage Day celebrations. Chairman of the Park Administrators Peter Tester said organisers were pleased with crowd numbers who braved the 33.4 degree heat to enjoy the variety of displays and entertainment on offer. One particular family had something extra special to celebrate, the 11th birthday of James Coburn - the youngest licensed driver of the Electric Model Train Club. James, pictured with younger brothers Andrew and Nicholas spent time chatting with the public and helping with live displays. Also supporting Heritage Day was the Rotary Club of Blenheim who organised the Taylor River Walk from the Riverside Amphitheatre to Brayshaw Park. Club member and organiser John May says this year’s walk showed an encouraging increase on last year’s numbers.

“There were many people who were defeated by the hot weather but we are still appreciative of the great response and sponsor support,” he says. Forty-one participants brought along their old Marlborough Walk certificates and were entered into the major prize draw. The winner Jenny Spall walked away with an electric heater donated by Placemakers. “Overall we feel we achieved our main goals, to bring more people along to Brayshaw Park and increase awareness of Heritage Day,” John says.

Junior karting on Saturday The second round of the Junior Yamaha section in the Marlborough Car Club’s Twilight karting series will take place in Blenheim on Saturday. The field will consist of around 30 drivers between 12 and 17 years of age from Blenheim, Christchurch and Nelson. One-man team hurting without LeBron Damian George There is an old saying in sport that one player doesn’t make a team. Judging by the current NBA standings, it would be very hard to convince a certain group of basketballers from Cleveland about the merits of that theory. A regular fixture in the top end of the competition’s Eastern Conference in recent years, the Cavaliers have suffered a fall from grace that surely can only be pinpointed to the loss of superstar forward LeBron James. It seemed unthinkable this time last year, even with James deciding to swap the Ohio snow for the Miami sun and surf, that this proud association would be footing the ladder with a disastrous record of 8 wins and 43 losses. In the last five years, they have not failed to make the playoffs, appearing in three conference semifinals, one conference final, and reaching the championship final in 2007. Granted, the regular season is not even halfway through, but even 12th-placed Washington - one place above Cleveland - are sitting five wins ahead of the Cavaliers, while eighthplaced Indiana have recorded 21 victories. James’ impact on the competition has been as huge as ever, and it is clear his former team are missing his scoring power a great deal more than a Miami side also boasting big name players Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. Those three players are all averaging more points a game than the Cavaliers’ highest scorer, Antawn Jamison, with LeBron third on the competition ladder at 26.1. In contrast, Jamison, scoring an average of 17.2 points per game, is 18th in the Eastern Conference, and 40th overall. Incidentally, Wade is only two places behind James on the overall scoring chart, netting 25.4 points a game, while Bosh is collecting 18.2. In a side who were already competitive, LeBron, who also leads the overall points/ rebounds/assists standings, is making them a genuine contender to stop the LA Lakers’ quest for a third consecutive title. There is another saying in sport: a champion team will always beat a team of champions. It seems that rule needs to make an exception for a talent like LeBron James. *Miami Heat are second in the Eastern Conference standings with a 37-14 record.

Record-breaking soldier honoured By Damian George A group of record-breaking former New Zealand soldiers, including Blenheim man Bill Pawson, have been honoured at their battalion’s 50th anniversary commemorations held in Auckland recently. Pawson, along with eight fellow soldiers, broke the record military time for walking 100 miles when they completed the trek in 31 hours, 15 minutes in the former Malaya in October, 1961. Of the 27 men who set out to complete the voyage, only nine crossed the finished line, and the remaining five of those men were on hand to receive a plaque from New Zealand Defence Force Lieutenant General Jerry Mateparae to celebrate the achievement. Fifty years on, Pawson says he only decided to take part in the trek to get out of participating in a parade for their Commanding Officer on the same day.

Former New Zealand Army soldier Bill Pawson, of Blenheim, displays the plaques commemorating 50 years since his record-breaking 100-mile walk. Left is the original, right is the anniversary edition.

“I volunteered to do the walk so I didn’t have to get my shoes all polished up and get my kit all ready,” he says. “But after, I wished I had have. She was a pretty tough sort of walk.” The group took a tenminute break every two hours during the walk, as well as a two-hour break after the first 50 miles. Pawson says the furthest the men had walked before they attempted the feat was just 40 miles, over two days. “The hardest part was trying to keep awake, and walking on gravel roads at night between the rut and the gravel was pretty hard too.” He says the record has since been attempted by a group of American soldiers and twice by New Zealand groups, but still stands today. “I think it will be broken one day but the guys will have to be awfully fit.” Around 70 soldiers from the battalion attended the ceremony.
