Let’s help our Sophie By Annabelle Latz A fun action-packed school holiday was the suspected cause for Renwick’s Sophie Gilchrist’s lack of energy. Her parents Michelle and Bryan never expected Leukemia would be the reason. On July 9 Michelle decided to take five year-old Sophie to the doctor. “I was concerned with her tiredness,” she said. Sophie was referred for blood tests straight away. “An hour and a half later we were told the diagnosis.” She was diagnosed with pre cursor B Acute Lymphloblastic Leukaemia, which affects her blood. Platelets were flown to Wairau Hospital that afternoon, as Sophie was very unstable. The following morning she was flown to Christchurch with her dad Bryan, and sent straight to Ronald MacDonald House. Continued page 2

By Annabelle Latz Joseph Sullivan will be going back to where his rowing career began this Sunday in Picton, when his home town puts on a welcoming ceremony for their Olympic legend. As long as the weather plays its part, Joseph will be rowed to the ceremony by Picton Rowing Club junior members, to London Quay where the public celebration, arranged by the Picton Rowing Club, will take place, at 1pm. He will arrive at the foreshore, aboard a coxed four, on the “Sea Lion”, the Picton Rowing Club skiff in which Joseph began his training as a young teenager. Because of recent wet weather, and more forecast for the weekend, the paved area was a better alternative compared to the water-logged foreshore. Speeches will take place, and the Queen Charlotte kapa haka group will also perform. Picton Rowing Club member Mitchell Mackenzie-Mol, 17, will be one of the junior rowers to row Joseph in. Robinsons’ to build theatre
The tender to build Marlborough’s new $17 million ASB Civic Theatre has gone to a local construction company. Marlborough Theatre Trust chaiman Kevin Moseley announced yesterday Robinson Construction Ltd of Blenheim as the preferred tenderer. “We’re delighted the most competitive tender is from a Marlborough firm and we’re pleased Robinson Construction will be building what will undoubtedly be a showpiece for Marlborough,” he said. Four companies tendered for the project – two from Marlborough and two from outside the region. Mr Moseley said to ensure the tender process was fair and even, the tenders were handled by project managers who then came back to the trust with a recommendation. Robinson Construction chief executive Phil Robinson said his firm was delighted it submitted the successful tender. Continued page 2.

Clara, you beaut By Robbie Parkes “I think things are going to be a little different, but it’s good different. It’s everything I ever wanted,” says Clara van Wel on how her life will change following the win everybody is talking about. With nearly one million viewers across the nation watching, Clara was crowned the winner of TV ONE’s popular television show, New Zealand’s Got Talent on Sunday night. Talking to The Sun yesterday, Clara said she does not think the reality of the win will ever set in. “It really is just a dream experience.” She admits the past couple of days have been extremely “crazy,” with her conducting interviews, recording songs, and meeting lots of different people. While the success may influence her immediate future, the Blenheim schoolgirl is staying grounded. “I’m still Clara,” she said. She intends to remain in Marlborough and finish school, but obviously her future in music is still a major focus. “Next year we’ll start working on an album hopefully, all that is pretty wicked.” She said the ideals instilled in her by her family has helped greatly. By Chris Tobin To start a newspaper from scratch and to make it a success is no mean feat but it is something Les and Katrina Whiteside have achieved with the Blenheim Sun. And this week is a time for them to celebrate as the Sun, Marlborough’s biggest circulating newspaper, marks 10 years since it started. Les says they arrived in Blenheim from Christchurch just over 10 years ago with just two objectives. “We came for the lifestyle and to put out a weekly paper – nothing more.” It helped that, as Les adds, they were passionate about newspapers. 2012 an eventful year for mayor By Emily Elliott The year 2012 brought many challenges to the Marlborough District Council, however the highlights have far outnumbered the hardships. Marlborough Mayor, Alistair Sowman, said this year had some big pressure points, such as King Salmon, the Clifford Bay proposal, storms and floods, economic stress within the community, and local government reforms. One of the major themes of 2012 was building up community resilience. “I tried to get people thinking and build up links within the community. “We promoted partnership between the council and community, as well as new ways of thinking - smart and connected,” Mr Sowman said. Some of the councils more serious work was focusing on the Long Term Plan and budget.
“My public call for stringency in the face of tough times did seem to strike a chord,” said Mr Sowman. “I emphasised the need to trim Council’s short term spend - which is what we did.” This year was also the year of property revaluations - an external review
which had a very big impact on rates. “A major speech early in the year was ‘Rethinking our Future’, calling for us to think about value-based growth and understand the virtues of being ‘small and smart’,” Mr Sowman said. The Council progressed with community facilities, namely Sheps Park, Endeavour Park and pavilion, opening the Aquatic Centre and installing WiFi into Picton and shortly, Blenheim. A key highlight was celebrating the success of Olympic gold medal rower, Joseph Sullivan. Mr Sowman believes 2012 was a tough year for the local government, as it came under attack from the central government. He is thrilled that the Marlborough District Council acquitted itself as well as, if not better, than most other councils. “Fiscally, we are in a very strong
position - we are low in debt and strong on assets. “People of Marlborough can be assured that their resources have been exceptionally well managed,” Mr Sowman said. For 2013, Mr Sowman wants to see Marlborough moving forward with new business opportunities. “We want to keep the lid on budgets - we have the first signs of the local economy recovering but there is still a long way to go.” External forces will continue to be in play in 2013, with King Salmon and Clifford Bay. “Both are issues where the central government’s will plays an enormous part. “My role is to try and get the best results for Marlborough.” The local government elections are also in October.
Big Marlborough promotion in Auckland Marlborough food and wine producers together with Destination Marlborough will be promoting the region in Auckland during February in the award-winning restaurant The Grill by Sean Connolly. The four night Marlborough Dinner Series is a one-time event which celebrates a selection of the very best of the region’s world-class fresh produce and spectacular wines – meaning Aucklanders will get a taste of the region in their own celebrated city eatery, The Grill. Destination Marlborough’s general manager Tracy Johnston believed the Marlborough Dinner Series was a great way to broaden Aucklanders’ knowledge of the region’s special flavours. “The world tells us we produce some of the best wine and food around and we’re keen to share it. We envisage this event
will inspire more Aucklanders to head straight to the source. “With five daily non-stop f lights between Auckland and Marlborough they can be landing in the heart of New Zealand’s largest wine growing region in just over an hour, and be sitting in a winery restaurant moments later.” Four Marlborough wineries have joined Destination Marlborough to showcase their finest drops, with one taking centre stage each day. Each accompanies a fabulous four course menu consisting of Marlborough food producer ingredients including Ora King Salmon and Cloudy Bay Clams, to name a few. Guests can take their pick from the best of the best with wineries Hans Herzog Estate, Nautilus Estate, Seresin Estate and Hunters Wines, each signing up for an evening to feature
their wines, matched alongside Marlborough’s finest produce. The campaign has been developed by Destination Marlborough to build the awareness of Marlborough as an attractive holiday destination in New Zealand’s largest city with the intention of encouraging more Aucklanders to visit the region. Air New Zealand has joined the campaign to highlight the schedule which includes up to five non-stop daily services between Marlborough and Auckland. Already the airline has increased the capacity between Marlborough and Auckland by an average of 8% between January and April 2013, due to some up-gauges to larger aircraft flying the route. Marlborough New Years honour recipients
QSM goes to Picton man By Chris Tobin “A bit bewildered really,” says Picton man Peter Bugler (right) to the news that he has been awarded a Queen’s Service Medal in the New Year’s honours list. Mr Bugler has receive the award announced yesterday for his services to cycling tourism, particularly for his starting the Youth Hostel Association of NZ’s Geriatrix Cycle Touring Group. He was recognised recently also
with an award from the YHA, an organisation with whom he has been a volunteer for 45 years. “I thought that was enough; I’m not really into getting awards. I knew that a group of friends were making an attempt but hadn’t got a response and thought it had gone by the wayside but it hadn’t.” Mr Bugler started the Geriatrix Cycle Tour Group in 1994. The YHA commented: “What
Peter has achieved is to make cycle touring feasible and affordable for many older people for whom the logistics and cost would otherwise be beyond their means. This has improved their quality of life and provided them with a sense of adventure and achievement that would otherwise have been inaccessible to them.” Mr Bugler ran 40 different groups until his retirement this year.
Two dames, six knights Services to NZ-Nepal relations recognised Two dames and six new knights were named in the New Year honours list yesterday. Justice Judith Potter (services to the judiciary) and Wendy Pye (business and education) have become Dames Companion of the NZ Order of Merit. The knights are equestrian star, Mark Todd; well known philanthropist, Owen Glenn; the Kaiwhakahaere (chairperson) of Te Runanga o Ngai Tahu, Wiremu Solomon; the president of the NZ Court of Appeal, Justice Mark O’Regan; the chairman of Allied Press, publisher of the Otago Daily Times, Julian Smith; and the former mayor of Waitakere city, Bob Harvey.
St Arnaud’s resident John Gully who has been organising youth trips to Mt Everest since 1988 receives a QSM in the New Year’s Honours. “I’m a bit surprised since there are a lot of people in the district who’ve done more in my view like doctors who have given their time,” he said. Mr Gully’s award is for services to New Zealand-Nepal relations. His Youth to Everest expeditions have been operating to Mt Everest since 1988, helping with cleaning up the area and reforestation projects. Since starting up, 900 youth had gone on the treks. “They go into Nepal and we’ve had a good representation from Marlborough.” He said the young people came home
changed by the experience. “They get a total immersion into a fabulous culture and return with a greater appreciation of life here. They see the Sherpas have a very hard life and realise that their life here (in New Zealand) isn’t so bad at all.” Mr Gully said youth who had gone on the treks were returning as leaders, one of them a doctor. Projects Mr Gully has been involved with include leading volunteer efforts to propagate 10,000 snow and drought resistant pines in the Khumba Forest after it was subjected to heavy deforestation and establishing the Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee which removed several thousand tonnes of waste from the Everest region.
Another award for Joseph Sullivan The Pride of Picton (and Marlborough) Olympic gold medal rower Joseph Sullivan has received another major accolade to cap which has been an unforgettable year for him. Like his double sculls partner Nathan Cohen, Sullivan has
been made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to rowing in the New Year’s honours list. The pair caught the attention of all New Zealand with their storming finish in the double sculls to claim the gold medal at the
London Olympics this year. Sullivan took out Marlborough Sportsman of the Year this year also – for the third time and is a life member of the Picton Rowing Club. Sullivan is compiling an impressive list of achievements.

International Award sparked global interest By Emily Elliott CarbonScape is attracting global attention since winning a major international award last month. The Blenheim based company received NZ$150,000 after placing runner up in an international green technology contest in New York last month. Since returning to New Zealand, Chairman Nick Gerritsen has said there has been a renewed interest in the business. “Things are looking quite exciting. The business has become a commercial activity”. Mr Gerritsen has said that the award has opened up many new opportunities to network globally. The business has had to take a fresh look at what they can do on a global basis. “The award means we can walk in and be part of a family that companies
such as the Clinton Fund, Greenpeace, and the World Wildlife Fund are also a part of.” CarbonScape is the first New Zealand company to win the award, which has placed Marlborough on the global map. “It’s a reflection of the reputation New Zealand has. We’re about reducing carbon emissions within a key industrial factor,” said Mr Gerritsen. The award has also provided CarbonScape with verification. The judging process was done in two steps, by those with expert knowledge. “There’s a level of comfort and appreciation that we’ve proven that what company is doing is great.” “Right now we’re in the process of turning the company into a business. We have exciting national and international interest,” Mr Gerritsen has said.
New Pak’nSave closer The New Year will bring a new supermarket for Blenheim with Pak’nSave on track to open around Easter. Applications for 150 general jobs at the 6000 square metre store which is being built in Westwood Ave, Springlands, opened in November and closed on December 21. Earlier in the year the store received over 150 applications for seven management positions.
Present owner/operators of New World in Freswick St, Mark Elkington and Andrea Boock, will take up the new Pak’nSave which is being build by Robinson Construction of Blenheim. The new owner/operators of New World Blenheim will be Ashley and Melanie Shore who have been operating a Four Square store in Fairlie for four and a half years. They will take over New World on January 21.

Airport terminal expansion ‘future proofing’ By Emily Elliott Marlborough Mayor, Alistair Sowman, says he is looking forward to extending the existing Airport terminal. The conceptual plans have been drawn up, and a questionnaire carried out through the month of November, asking airport users about parking, among other things. “It’s just a proposal at this Mayor Sowman. Brian Dawson. stage,” Mr Sowman said, “but said, “unlike other airports, at the moment large aeroplanes regional airports struggle to can’t land there.” An ongoing debate is whether make money.” Blenheim Airport doesn’t have to expand the existing airport, or build a new terminal, at the south the stores others do to generate the revenue needed to help pay. side of the runway. Despite this, both Mayor SowOne main challenge is how man and Chamber of Commerce to pay for it and where to get the money from. Mr Sowman General Manager, Brian Dawson
believed the expansion is “looking to the future”. According to Dawson, the expansion is about future proofing. “We need to take a positive look at the future, not only for the next 5-10 years but for the next 20.” Dawson believed in the potential of having meeting rooms and lounges such as the Koru Club in an expanded terminal. He said the airport needed to have resources that applied to the typical traveller, and made travel easy. “Of course there are limitations, but we need to make the most of space. Its about future proofing not only Marlborough, but the Marlborough tourism industry.”

Clever Clara Young singer songwriter Story and photo by Annabelle Latz Local musician Clara van Wel had the crowd smiling and swaying in February, rocking in June, and cheering as loud as they could in December. The fifteen year-old headlined Classic Hits Winery Tour in February at Villa Maria Estate, with her little sister Daisy in the front row, with favourite fan status. In June Clara won the Marlborough Smokefreerockquest for the second year running. Her dream of becoming a professional musician came true at the end of last year,
when she took the title of New Zealand’s Got Talent. Her single Where Do You Find Love then took top spot on the New Zealand music chart in mid December, dropping New Zealand’s Got Talent’s Jason Kerrison with his band Opshop and Never Leave Me to number four. Her single was third most popular song overall in New Zealand that same week, behind Macklemore with Ryan Lewis and Will.I.Am with Britney Spears. Despite the sudden fame and faster pace of life, Clara has taken it all in her stride, and is still the humble Marlborough
Girls’ College student she has always been. “It’s fun. It’s stuff I like doing so it’s all positive.” Clara has always thanked the community, her friends and her family, for all the support and encouragement. She has one main message for anyone with a dream. “Never listen to anyone who tells you you can’t do it, because it’s not their life. It’s worth trying, because you will probably regret it if you don’t.” Clara is working on her debut album this summer, and it should out on the shelves in March 2013.
Sophie the brave star Sophie Gilchrist has been an extremely brave six year-old this year, and her family and the community are so proud of her. The Renwick School pupil was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in July. Since then, after spending a lengthy stint in Christchurch, based at Ronald McDonald House while undergoing weekly chemotherapy treatment at Christchurch Hospital’s
children’s cancer ward, she then returned back at home in Renwick with her mum Michelle, dad Bryan, and little sister Izabel. Sophie has continued her treatment at Nelson Hospital. Thousands of dollars has been raised for Sophie this year, through community and school efforts for cake sales, recipe book sales, raffles, auction dinners, and more.

Dear Ed Re: Christmas in the Park. On reading the news item/review of Christmas in the Park (Sun, December 19) we were disappointed that no mention was made of the wonderful musicians from Tempo (Today’s Emerging Musicians Performing Onstage). These multi-talented young people are all musicians in their own right who perform regularly in the Tempo concert series and came

together especially for the Christmas in the Park concert forming a 17 voice choir and accompanied by an 11 piece orchestra with vocal soloists and were the opening act of the evening performing three contemporary Christmas carols. These were beautifully sung and a reminder to us all of the true “reason for the season”. Thank you Tempo. Jocelyn & Harold Ricketts

New theatre in progress By Emily Elliott Construction of the new civic theatre is underway, with hopes of completion by August 2014. Theatre chairman, Kevin Moseley, has said, “We’ve been hanging out for this.” According to Mr Moseley, a lot of time would be spent preparing the site and laying foundations. “Like with any house, it will be a while before anything will pop out of the ground,” he said. Phil Robinson, of Robinson Construction, who has been contracted to build the new theatre, said the construction would start slowly, and the number of people working on the site would vary. “At the start there may be 10 to 12 people there. “Near the end - three to four months before completion - we’ll have more people on site. “At peak there will probably be about
60 people.” Mr Robinson said construction was going to schedule so far. Mr Moseley is returning to fundraising as progress on the theatre continues. “The more we fundraise, the better the end project will be.” Both he and Mr Robinson were looking forward to seeing and using the finished theatre. “Thousands of people have helped with this in many ways, it will be great to see it used by the community,” Moseley says. “We’ll be able to look back on the project and see something we started a long time ago reach fruition, as well as see the community use it.” Mr Robinson believed at the end, “We’ll have a fantastic facility that we’re all proud of.” Construction is taking place beside the Kevin Moseley, Phil Robinson and Peter Mark. Variety - The Children’s Charity is currently seeking applications from families and child-related organisations for funding to be considered for distribution during its 23rd annual Variety Bash. Application forms are available online at www.variety.org.nz or by phoning (09) 520 4111. From 9-15 March 2013, the Variety Bash, a convoy of 25 quirky vehicles, will travel to Waipukurau via Waiouru and Onga Onga; Picton via Wellington; Hanmer via Blenheim; Kaiapoi, and Christchurch before finishing up in Kaikoura.
The Bash mission is to distribute grants to, and raise money for, Kiwi kids in need, as well as bringing magic and fun to the schools and communities it visits. “We urge families, schools and child welfare organisations from the areas we visit and surrounding districts, to get their grant applications to the Variety office before 31 December 2012, to be considered for presentation during the 2013 Bash”, said Jodi Preston-Thomas, Bash Event Manager. Applications are considered by Variety’s Grants Committee and funds are granted to those projects the committee considers will make a tangible difference to improving the quality of life of sick, disabled and disadvantaged Kiwi kids aged up to 18 years.
Examples of items that may be considered for funding include specialised trikes, sport/play/art and cultural equipment, and customised equipment for children with special needs. Applications should be received by Variety by 31st December. Arts and theatre in Picton Story and photos by Annabelle Latz A bit of drizzle and overcast weather only put a slight dampener on the Picton Performing Arts and Street Theatre Festival. Held on December 22, Nelson Square was filling up with partakers and action by midday. The event involved stalls, puppet workshops, circus workshops, the Annual Koromiko Great Egg Race, and the Picton Street Theatre Extravaganza. Both locals and those from further away attended the festival, with some staying at nearby camping grounds. Tyas Hawkins, owner of the Picton Campervan Park, said things are fairly busy at the moment, but the real influx starts after Christmas. Selma Lasseuer, owner of Parklands Marina Holiday Park, said bookings are on par with other years, and also said things to pick up after Christmas Day. “It will get very busy on Boxing Day and December 27,” she said. Special thanks to Sounds Air, ITM Picton, Fresh Choice Picton, Crafar Crouch and Jugglers Rest Backpackers for the support.

A Golden Year Marlborough’s own Olympic champion has had a life changing year after winning a gold medal at the London Olympics in August. The world champion rower talks to Emily Elliott about what has changed, winning Marlborough Sportsman of the year, and his plans for the future. From the small New Zealand town of Picton, Olympic rower Joseph Sullivan has trained his way to victory. Always told he was too short to be a successful rower, he and his double sculls partner, Nathan Cohen, powered through the last 250m of the Eton Dorney race course at the London 2012 Olympics. The rower grew up in Marlborough, and believes he wouldn’t be where he is today without having rowed with ‘the boys’ from Picton Rowing Club. Having spent most of his teenage and young adult life training, he has been enjoying a well deserved break since returning from London. “I’m really enjoying the time off at the moment - I haven’t had a break in 12 years! I’m just making the most of it.” Mr Sullivan has been seeing a lot of his family, and has enjoyed having a social life again. When asked about his training, Mr Sullivan laughed and said he probably wasn’t doing as much as he should be. “I’m doing cross training at the moment - a bit of kayaking and cycling.” As for how often, Sullivan said he was training about three times a week. “It’s pretty basic at the moment. Just enough to keep me fit.” Which is something Mr Sullivan knows about. The athlete was awarded Marlborough Sportsman of the Year for the third year last month. He is the only other athlete to win the award three times, alongside the likes of All Black Alan Sutherland and rower Duncan Grant. Mr Sullivan said winning the award means a lot to him. “It’s such a great honour to win that. There are some great names on it, and it’s such an honour for my name to be on it alongside theirs.” Winning the title was a great way to top off the year and have his efforts recognised. Since he returned to New Zealand, Mr Sullivan has had to get used to publicity. “Everything has changed! I used to be able to go down the street without
anyone knowing who I was. Now people see me and want a photo or something signed.” When Mr Sullivan first returned from London, his weeks would involve doing interviews, going to business meetings and talking at schools. The athlete was only home three nights a week. Now days, Mr Sullivan’s typical week includes going to a few events and talking to schools. “They don’t teach you this side to winning a medal.
It takes a bit of getting used to,” he said. Mr Sullivan said it’s getting easier, a good thing considering he may be in for another Olympic gold. While the star is planning on going to the 2016 Olympics held in Rio de Janeiro, he is also keeping his options open. “I’m definitely planning on Rio, but four years is a long time, and a lot can change in them.” When asked if he would be racing with rowing partner Nathan Cohen again, Mr Sullivan was unsure. “I’m going for any boat I can get into!
There are a lot of young people who are really good, and I have to compete for a seat against them. If they beat me, they deserve it.” While Mr Sullivan said it would be awesome to be in a double again, he doesn’t know what will happen. Mr Sullivan will keep his hopes and his training high, getting back into the swing of full training by early next year. He will be training with the New Zealand Squad again, doing what he is told to do, he joked.

Best blushing brides It was a good thing Mel Greenwood decided to enter the Beavertown Blenheim Bride of the Year 2012 show, as she came out title winner. She admitted she only entered the show to ‘have fun in her dress’ and she and her husband Hamish were shocked when she was called out as winner. Show organiser Carol Taylor said this year’s show, the 10th anniversary, was ‘outstanding’ and the toughest yet to judge. “Each of the girls looked spectacular and had groomed themselves from head to foot, and in my eyes they were all deserving brides.” 1st: Mel Greenwood (nee) Shearer 2nd: Francesca Thornley (nee) Muollo 3rd and Miss Photogenic: Della Offord (nee) Edwards Audience Choice: Rachel Bishell (nee) Cooper Lucky prize cash draw donated by Bernadette Thomas: FROM LEFT: 2nd: Francesca Thornley (nee) Muollo 2nd, 1st: Mel Greenwood (nee) Shearer, Audience Choice: Rachel Bishell (nee) Cooper, 3rd and Miss Photogenic: Della Offord (nee) Edwards. Jewel of a ship in Picton The Diamond Princess docked in Picton on the first day of the year. At 290 metres long, and boasting 18 decks, the ship cruises around New Zealand and Australia, Asia, India, Africa, and Alaska. The ship has just over 1,200 crew members, multiple swimming pools and fitness centres, a casino, nightclub, many fine restaurants, lounges
and bars, and even a golf course. The ship spent the day in Waimahara Wharf Shakespeare Bay, Picton, from 8am-5pm. The Diamond Princess has been sailing since 2004, and docks into Picton a few times each year. This is a good opportunity to take a look at the beauty before it heads off for another adventure.
Ma rlbu r ia ns Sa ra h M illa r, and Laura Donnelly have been recognised for their community efforts over the past two years as part of the Girls’ Brigade Queen’s Award programme. Sarah and Laura, along with other young women from around New Zealand, were recently presented their Queen’s Award Certificates from Her Excellency, Lady Janine Mateparae at Government House in Wellington. At a dinner function for the recipients and their families. The National Commissioner, Glenda Wederell, then presented the young women with their Queen’s Award badges. The Girls’ Brigade Queen’s
Award is a two year programme of demanding work which includes six months voluntary community service. Sarah completed her community service at Blenheim playcentre, while Laura did hers at Joy Ministries in Blenheim. They were also involved in other community events and activities. Open to young women aged from 15 – 25, the programme rewards them with an international award of the highest merit and recognises qualities of leadership, dedication and excellence in areas of community life. Time for new money resolutions By David Kneebone, Sorted spokesperson Reducing debt makes it into the top five most popular New Year’s resolutions, along with losing weight and getting fit. As you contemplate your money resolutions for 2013, it’s important to make sure you have the basics sorted. Spend less than you earn If there’s just one rule for managing your money, this is it. If you’re living from pay to pay, and not reducing your debt or growing your savings, you need to take control with a money plan. A good place to start is to track your spending over a couple of weeks or a month – then use that to create your budget. You might be surprised where your money goes. Decrease your debt If you have dumb debt – that is, high-interest debt like on a credit card or store card which could be avoided – your priority should be to get rid of it as fast as possible. List your debts in order of their interest rates and put as much as you can towards the one with the highest rate. Once you’ve paid that off, put the extra money towards the next debt
with the highest interest rate. It’s the fastest way to become debtfree – providing you avoid taking on any new debt! Start saving If you haven’t saved regularly before, starting a savings habit might seem hard. The trick is not to worry about starting small – even $20 a week will grow quicker than you think. Review your budget and see what you can afford to save regularly. Open a savings account and set up an automatic payment that goes into it as soon as you get paid. Making savings automatic will help you build a long-term habit. As well as saving for the short-term, make sure you’ve set some long-term savings goals, like saving to buy your first home and for retirement. Plan for the unexpected Nothing disrupts a well-planned budget like unforeseen expenses like major car repairs or medical bills. Saving up for an emergency fund is an important goal. Ideally, you should aim to save up the equivalent of three months’ expenses. It can be challenging to save up this amount – but every little bit helps.
Portrait exhibition An exhibition of 45 portraits is being held at Blenheim’s Millennium Art Gallery on the corner of Alfred and Seymour streets. The portraits come from the biennial Adam Portraiture Awards and include Blenheim
artist Mieke Hilhorst’s portrait, Douwe 1929-2009 (Josepha Hilhorst) which won the personal choice award at the exhibition’s original showing at the National Portrait Gallery. The exhibition runs until January 27, 2013.
Maori Health jobs cut from 14 to six Maori mental health jobs in Marlborough have been cut from 14 to six as part of the Te Rapuora service’s closure. Nelson Marlborough District Health Board Maori health director Harold Wereta said recently there were eight [fulltime equivalent] jobs across Maori mental health. S ix of those were based in Marlborough - two in alcohol and drug services, two adult community support workers, one child and youth community support worker and one clinical specialist. Nelson-based health provider
Te Kahui Hauora O Ngati Koata will be the lead provider of kaupapa Maori mental health in the region after December 31. It will be supported by Te Hauora O Te Awhina in Motueka. They will deliver community-based alcohol and drug services and employ community support workers for adults and young people. Te Rapuora employed 14 staff to deliver their mental health services. New staff numbers were determined by a review of client case-loads and on the advice of Te Rapuora, Mr Wereta said.
Run for a crown
Above: Peter Dick will be competing in the King of the Withers running race, January 5, and admits it will be tough. Left: Susie Aviss will compete in the Queen of the Withers running race on January 4, during her off season from her duathlon training.
Story and photo by Annabelle Latz The King and Queen of the Withers running race is on Saturday January 5, and the effort to receive the crown is a big one. Peter Dick and Susie Aviss will be two of the runners competing in the 10km. “No matter how fit I am, I’ve always found it really tough,” said Peter, a farmer from Spring Creek. The race was first held in 1977, and was for male runners only. Peter first ran in 1992, the year it was opened up to females. It used to start in the town’s centre, and be in the evenings. It now starts in the morning, and is all in the Wither Hills. “It’s an awesome tough course.” Peter, who was the first Marlborough finisher in the St
Clair Half Marathon this year, said it is a great event to kick start the year, and it is always good to see a big mix of walkers and runners taking part. Susie Aviss is in her off-season for duathlon training, but said running this race was a good way to start the year. She currently holds the record for the fastest woman, (2006), and first competed in the event 15 years ago. “It’s quite good to see how the fitness is going around Christmas.” Susie, who has represented New Zealand for duathlon numerous times, said it is not an easy race, due to the steepness of the uphill and downhill, and the heat. “It’s the sense of achievement, and surviving it.” Her advice to walkers, hybrid
and running competitors is not to start too fast. “If you have all the hills behind you and you still feel strong, you are going to be okay. But if you still have the hills in front of you and you are feeling tired, you might be stuffed!” Enter as an individual, part of a business team or as a married couple, in the walk, hybrid or running section. The course starts from the Rifle Range car park, heads up towards the Quail stream car park, crosses over Quail stream, eventually hitting the ridge and rotary lookout, past the twin tanks, downhill on the Reservoir Ridge track, along the Upper Harling Park track, towards Quail Stream car park, once more across the Quail stream footbridge and downhill all the way back to the finish.
Be careful near railway lines KiwiRail and the Chris Cairns Foundation are warning people to take care around railway lines this holiday period in light of recent statistics showing that people are continuing to take unnecessary risks around the railway. There have been over 230 reported cases of trespassing on the rail network this year. This includes people crossing tracks at places other than a level crossing and walking across or jumping off rail bridges. So far this year 19 people have died on the rail network. This includes 15 people who were trespassing, one death in a vehicle level crossing collision and 3 deaths at pedestrian level crossings. It is very disturbing to see the number of pedestrian deaths said KiwiRail general manager

people and warn them that a train is approaching,” he says. “People need to remember that trains are quiet, they move faster than they appear, and they take a very long time to stop. “At all times, and especially over the Christmas holidays, we are urging people to take care and be aware around the railway, to always obey the signs and make sure the lines are clear of trains before they cross the tracks.” Chris Cairns Foundation manager Megan Drayton says it is pleasing to see a decline in the number of vehicle level crossing infrastructure and engineering, collisions this year, but warns people not to become complacent Rick van Barneveld. “We are reminding people that around the holiday period. “We’ve had 13 vehicle collisions they should only ever cross tracks at legal pedestrian level crossings. so far this year, and that has the And warning signs are there potential to be the lowest figure for a reason – they are to protect since 2003,” she said.

sports talk
When to retire and when not? How long should sports people stay at the top before calling its quits? I’ve given this topic a little thought in the quieter holiday moments prompted I suppose by the news just before Christmas that Olympic champion sculler Ma he Drysdale has committed to another four years and will have a crack at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. The news was greeted ent husia st ica l ly, i f not jubilantly, by the rowing fraternity. Yet, given his age (he’s 34), it’s a gamble. There was once a school of thought which stated that an athlete should go out on top. If the athlete’s name was to be forever remembered in a golden, triumphant light, then they should retire when they were at the pinnacle of their
careers. This philosophy harks back perhaps to the amateur era when many sportspeople had to balance their commitment to sport with careers. Yet there is still some credence to this ‘retire at the top school,’ particularly when the financial pickings in a sport are lean. And one of the most depressing sights in sport has to be seeing a previously great champion struggling and under-performing. To b e c om e Oly m pic champion is the summit. It could be argued that’s one reason why the middle distance runner Peter Snell was voted New Zealand’s greatest sports star of the 20th century. He retired aged 25 as a world recordholder and reigning Olympic champion. He went out a winner. Of course some sports are
Chris Tobin chris@blenheimsun.co.nz
different, namely those in which competitors can earn a healthy living and where their performances do not decline at a rapid rate. Golfer Bob Charles went on winning for decades. And the equestrian ace, craggy-faced Mark Todd, Sir Mark now, equestrian’s rider of the 20th century, has forged a career of epic proportions from Olympic champion way back in the 1980s to Olympic medallist at the grand old age of 56. In his case, horses helped. Yet someone like Val Adams could end up becoming our best ever Olympic repeating champion. Still relatively young at 28, she could be at her real peak come Rio in 2016. Will that be the same for Mahe Drysdale? He’s taken a gamble.
