CANDIDATURE NATASHA FOR VPCB NADEEM

"Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others." —Jack Welch Dear IFMSA-Pakistan, I find myself standing once again at the precipice of dreams and ambitions, but if there is one thing that has never changed, it’s my passion to take on the world and achieve what I set my mind to. It’s a story I have told many times before: As a freshly minted member, I struggled just like everyone else to grasp the complex terminologies and structure. I yearned to make a difference but did not know how. I was restless to satisfy this innate desire to be a part of something bigger than myself, but I did not know where to start. Stephen Covey describes how each of us has inside of us a gate of change, one that only we can open from the inside. I agree for the most part, but I also believe that sometimes you can use some outside help. Every instance I moved forward in IFMSA was fueled by my motivation, but it would never have been possible without the unlimited guidance I was offered at every door I stopped to ask. IFMSA is not a home to me because of the opportunities, knowledge, and skills I have benefitted from. IFMSA is home because of the people. I have been privileged to have met some of the most well-capacitated individuals in our NMO, those who never hesitated to teach me something new, and those who dedicated their best efforts to spread what they knew to those who didn’t. I have been inspired by these individuals, and, in every capacity I found myself in, did the same for others in turn. In a world stricken by those who exploit, I have always considered it a personal mandate to reach out a hand of help. True success does not stem from material wealth or accomplishments, rather it is found in the relationships we nurture – in the impact we have on other people's lives. Indeed, true success is changing the world together, one helping hand at a time. This approach toward life arises from the core of who I am: my faith. My faith in the good, in the right, in the positive. I have faith in people. I believe in their untapped potential that – when given the right direction – can set them on their destined path, and help them fulfill what they were born to do. You see, very early on, I discovered something: I love to talk about IFMSA, but more than that, I love to teach others about it. As human beings, we have many hobbies ranging from public speaking to dramatics, all of which can find a place in a college in a society. IFMSA, however, stands out as it enjoys the privilege of representing the one identity common to us all: medical students. IFMSA calls us to own who we are, to step outside the circle of formal education, and embrace our profession. Medicine is a noble pursuit, but it is not one without sacrifice. IFMSA begins capacity building for future doctors early on enough that even an extra hour spent outside the conventional classroom to learn a skill can improve our competency as healthcare professionals.

CANDIDATURE NATASHA FOR VPCB NADEEM

For years, I have been defined by my work in SCOPH, and yet have still been in a position where I continued to work along all fronts in IFMSA. For years, I told myself I loved to “help” others. It is today that I have the word for what I have been doing all along – capacity building. I know only people can open their gates of change, but what if we taught them how? I'm content with the path I carved for myself in IFMSA. With the journey I have had, I feel ready to take on the leadership of the Executive Board. While some may think that working in a Standing Committee would limit us in our work, on the contrary, it has opened up doors for me in contributing to the development of our NMO. I always say that I left no stone unturned when it came to growing in IFMSA. I have worked locally, nationally, regionally, and even internationally to not only pursue my interests but to actually execute that one question always asked on application forms: how will you use the skills you have learned in your NMO? My answer has always been the same: I will share every strength and asset that I hold with every member. For the past four years, I have already been capacitating members as much as I can, and as many as I can, unfortunately, there are human limitations to what I can do and how much time I have. It is time for me to amplify my personal efforts into a structured plan that can capacitate medical students throughout IFMSA-Pakistan. From a Local Officer creating impact one activity at a time to a National Team member learning Activity Management to a National Officer who led in elevating the Standing Committee on Public Health in Pakistan, and now finally, I step forward to join the leadership of IFMSA-Pakistan. I am humbled to be presenting myself as the Candidate for Vice President for Capacity Building of IFMSA-Pakistan for the term 2022 – 2023. As someone who will be in her last year of medical school in the next term, this moment today is the culmination of my journey in IFMSA, and it would be a dream to serve the NMO in this way. I find duality in this role. Capacity building is the backbone of our NMO, no organization can work without sustainability, and the post of Vice Presidency is one that shapes the direction of leadership in IFMSA-Pakistan – a responsibility I do not take lightly. My work as the NPO taught me a lot about leadership and teamwork. Working with the SCOPH National Team has been one of the most fulfilling experiences of my life. It is why I feel confident in leading the VPCB National Team, as I know I can build upon my experiences. Joining the National Cabinet was no easy learning curve. As someone who did not have a handover or predecessor to guide me, everything I have learned has been from scratch. Nonetheless, I now recognize how I was elected for a Standing Committee that had regressed in development and lacked the sustainability other Standing Committees had. What I lacked in capacity, I made up for my motivation, working thrice as hard to observe, learn, plan, and execute.

CANDIDATURE NATASHA FOR VPCB NADEEM

My greatest fear has always been that I have not done enough, but today, I look back to where SCOPH was one term ago and know that, the efforts of my National Team and I, have been more than adequate to build a solid foundation that can be sustained in all future terms. Capacity building in our NMO especially due to the COVID-19 pandemic suffered. It is ironic that I am yet again taking up the challenge of bringing something back up from the roots. It is a challenge that does not intimidate me, but rather one that solidifies my conviction. I know that this is what I was always meant to do. Moreover, for far too long, our leadership has often been marred by instability, and I intend to apply my work ethic to secure the trust that IFMSA-Pakistan honours us with. I have built up a versatile portfolio, both within and outside IFMSA. My background in student body leadership, public speaking, organization, event management as well as conflict management has equipped me with the tools to step into the shoes of a leader who can navigate turbulent waters and execute the ever-demanding tasks required of a Vice President. Throughout the work of IFMSA, I have always felt a certain barrier to the opportunities available. International travel is a luxury, not most can afford, so most training opportunities remain limited to those who can. If someone cannot avail of such opportunities, then it is our responsibility to bring them to IFMSA-Pakistan. Accessibility and the desire to take everyone along with me, to leave no member under-capacitated is the driving force behind my candidature. The IFSMA motto “Think globally, act locally” is engraved in my mind with every initiative I take. I wholeheartedly believe in our ability to create a global impact with every step we take within this organization. It is time for me, to share this sanctuary with you all. I have been nurtured and taught by the most competent members of our NMO, and I consider it my responsibility to usher in a new generation of well-capacitated individuals. My vision is to establish a Pakistan where human beings are capacitated with the knowledge and skills to advocate for a radical transformation of our healthcare system. It all comes down to this single step: to take up the mantle of Capacity Building in IFMSA-Pakistan. IFMSA has shaped me as an individual. It allowed me to have a platform, to raise my voice, to make a difference, and to teach me how to make a difference. It is time for me to give back. There is no greater joy than sharing what you love, and this is one such calling – one I intend to help all of IFMSA-Pakistan answer.
