Thank you for picking up BL!SSS Magazine. As I write this intro, 2007 is coming to an end, and I’m blown away that our fourth issue will soon be burnt onto some DVD’s and on it’s way to the printer. Turns out it was a great year for the birth of our new mag. We’ve had an amazing response from everyone that has come in contact with BL!SSS thus far, and we plan on keeping that vibe flowing into the New Year. We have a bunch of new brands coming on board with us in 2008, and we’re excited to have their presence in the mag. People keep asking us if we’re ever going to run an action cover, and to be perfectly honest with you I’m not sure. I can say that for now we will continue to feature artists in the magazine, and show their work on our covers. In fact, we’ve got some great artists lined up for future issues, and we’re really looking forward to working with them. Our friend Randy Noborikawa did this month’s cover. His work is insane and we’re honored to feature his paintings in the mag, and especially on the cover. This issue is holding the goods once again. As far as surfing goes, Daniel Russo caught up with Jamie O’ Brien for us, Tom Carey hooked up with Mitch Coleborn, and Nelly gave us some photos from a mainland Mexico trip with the Vans crew. I’ve been working with Nelly for years now and it’s nice to be back in business with our favorite, clove smoking Nor-Cal photographer. We’ve got a bit of skate and snow for you as well. There are interviews with Chris Gregson and Harrison Gordon, and we have 10-pages of Zach Hooper’s take on the snow world. The list goes on, so you’re just going have to take a look for yourself. Happy Holidays from the BL!SSS crew, and thanks so much for all the support thus far. - Nick Kalionzes

MAMMOTH OPENING DAY
JUNK IN THE TRUNQ
Though the snow was little, our spirits were high as we left a firing south swell in Southern California to head for higher elevations and the opening weekend of Mammoth Mountain – The official kickoff of the snowriding season in Southern California. Like years past the snow gods held out on us again but we gotta give props to Oren and the Mammoth crew for working with little to nothing and making sure there was something for the masses to ride. The weather was picture perfect and as always the parties kicked off in full Mammoth rager style. Capko’s gig at Whiskey Creek saw many of our shred brethren in attendance and more then one legend was spotted cutting the rug. When Saturday rolled around so did the weekend warriors and with that we hightailed it out of town.

You know that funky, foul odor that creeps up from the back of your ride and takes over the life of your car. That’s your wet, rotting, smelly wetsuit and towel from the surf session last week when you forgot to take it out of the back. No wonder I can’t get a chick to come home with me. But all that is about to change since the boys at Trunq hooked us up with their newest wet/dry storage containers, complete with changing matt and locking lids. Now my ride can go back to smelling like the same old gas station pine tree air freshener that I love so much.
Panda Bear
VANS WATCH From the folks who brought you the original skate shoe, Vans have been pumping out some damn nice looking watches as of late. I’m not talking about just one or two either, they got a whole line and they’re coming out strong. This one here, Check Face, reminds me of the original checkered Vans from back in the day. You can check out the whole selection the next time you’re at Tilly’s, give ‘em a gander.
Person Pitch : Paw Tracks This record came out in March but just found its way into the BL!SSS offices recently. This spaced out pop gem by Animal Collective member Panda Bear aka Noah Lennox is full of tripped out beats, samples and airy melodies. While these are great songs don’t go looking for quick pop hooks as the tracks “Bros” and “Good Girl/Carrots” are both over twelve minutes long. I know a guy who used to have a ritual called Brian Wilson Wednesdays. He would lie in bed all day listening to records and drinking beer. If there was ever a record to soundtrack those days this is it.

RESIN8 YOURSELF

Got a visit from some of the Hawaii Resin8 crew this past month. And for all of those who don’t know, Resin8 is a fairly new surfboard company producing the highest quality, lightest epoxy boards I’ve seen in hell of a long time. They were nice enough to drop off a couple of sticks for the BL!SSS boys to sample and we were definitely impressed. And why wouldn’t we be, with big names like Sam Egan and Eric Arkawa there’s really no way you can wrong. Check out all the shapes and future board technology at resin8usa.com.

ART BASEL MEETS BLISSS
NEWER TECHNOLOGY Now that we got all systems firing on Leopard I found out everyone had to have an external hard drive to utilize the Time Machine. Sweet. So in my scramble to accommodate everyone in the office without breaking the bank I found another jewel for all you computer techies out there. These Newer Technology miniStack V3 are the perfect solution. With up to a terabyte of memory, FireWire 800, multiple hub stations, and for about half the price of several others you just can’t go wrong.
The Color Fred Bend To Break : Equal Vision After listening to this solo record from Fred Mascherino, former guitarist and co-vocalist from Taking Back Sunday, it isn’t hard to believe that with his departure, the end of TBS may be near. These songs don’t fall far from the formula that has made the last two TBS records so successful. If anything the vocal performances are better and the songs are bit less intense than those records. You’ll definitely recognize the vocal style and a lot of the arraignments of the songs. A fun record especially if you were a fan before.
Seems like we are blessed with so much talent in our tiny little BL!SSS office that it’s straight amazing. Always on the media tip and sporting the shortest dolphins shorts money can buy, our Creative Director Madsteez is headlining an art show during the famed Art Basel in Miami this month. This IS the show of all shows in the art America world, where painters and payers rub shoulders in hopes of finding something that catches their eye while filling the pockets of the finest starving artists. With that said let’s hope Steezy boy doesn’t sell too many of his paintings otherwise we may accepting applications immediately.

EXTENSIONS OF YOU
COLUMBIAN DEVIL BREATH
And you thought there was only cocaine in Columbia. Turns out the good folk at VBS.TV have found yet another reason to make the trip down to the jungles of South America. Always pushing the limits, the Vice crew sent a team down to figure out the truth about the scariest drug on this planet, scopolamine. I kid you not when I say this is one VBS special you will not want to miss. I don’t want to give too much away so head on over to the website (www.vbs.tv) and check it out, it’s some seriously heavy shit.

Holy people. I’ve been to The Light Gallery (formerly The Pinch) a few times before but never, ever have I seen so many people packed in to this place at one time. Seriously, like sardines in a can. It was great; good beverages, good people, and tons of awesome art by the likes of Teddy Kelly, Kristi Mcknight, Tyler Alexander, Danielle Catte, Morgan Hill, Greg Byers, James Lugo, Todd Swanson and Justin Ruiz. If you were there you had a blast, if not, we’ll keep you posted on upcoming events.
KENWORTHY WEDDING Always gotta give senseless plugs to the ones that make our existence possible and there’s none other I’d rather give love to than the Kenworthy family. Always backing what we’re up to and never hesitant to let us know when we’re outta line, it’s good to see photo extraordinaire Jason Kenworthy and his lovely wife Sarah exchanging their vows. Married last month on the beautiful island of Kauai, don’t think for one second his photography career is slowing down as your sure to see plenty more to come from Jason in the near future.
In early November Burton, Analog and Gravis opened a new store in Osaka Japan that has yet to be rivaled by any competitor in the land. While most companies pop open shops in Tokyo (they already have one of those) the new store is located in the uber cool city of Osaka in the district with only the finest of shops. But the brick and mortar building isn’t what was so interesting, the real story here is about the turnout for the store opening. Team riders from all brands including the likes of Rizal Tanjung and Trevor Andrew met with Kalani Robb and Kassia Meador who were all overshadowed by Aarto Sari and Shaun White. Their super celebrity status that these athletes carry in the US is nothing compared to the fan-fare that flies when they make the scene in Japan.
PLASTISCINES
ANALoG RULES JAPAN TRAVIS “FATHEAD” RICE
You know how when you were a kid you always wanted the biggest effing poster you could find - Always plastering your entire bedroom walls with months of surf and skate pullouts. Nowadays, like everything, we’ve got ‘em super sized, and not just the baseball and football players of yesteryears. That’s right, Fathead has been making a big push in action sports market and have just added the likes of Travis Rice to their roster. These larger than life decals make perfect gifts for that lil brother or nephew that you struggle to shop for. Feel free to head on over to fathead. com and check ‘em all out.

Hourglass : Mute/Virgin Records The second solo record from the Depeche Mode front man sees him deliver a darker and far better offering than D Mode’s last studio album that was released in 2005. This collection of songs was written and produced by Dave along with Christian Eigner and Andrew Phillpott who are also members of Depeche Modes touring band. The album showcases all the reasons you like Dave with his deep, tortured vocals over buzzing electronic beats. Listen to the single “Kingdome” and make sure you check out the creepy video for the song.
RVCA SIGNS KALANI DAVID Ever since Kalani David was born he has been shredding on the ramp, in the water, and on the track. This kid is only nine years old, barely waste high, and is absolutely phenomenal. Spending the winters on the North Shore of Hawaii and summers wherever he can surf, skate, or ride, Kalani is truly an icon in the making. But don’t think he’s going unnoticed. Recently signed to RVCA and getting more airtime than some veteran celebrities, little Kalani David is already well on his path to being your next favorite superstar.
$10,000 FOR A KICKFLIP? Yup, that’s right. The crazy kids over at Volcom have put up ten grand for the first person to land a proper kickflip on a surfboard. Their contest is up and running, but before you gear up your jet ski you’d better type your little fingers over to Volcom.com/kickflipoff to read all the rules and regulations ‘cause this here contest is only for a real proper kickflip. You can also check out some near-makes and upload your own failed attempts at youtube.com/kickflipoff.
BJ PENN WILL KICK YOUR ASS! I don’t know too much about Ultimate Fighting or Jujitsu or whatever, but I do know that BJ Penn is a badass mofo and that he’ll kick your ass anytime he wants. BJ just spent some time training over on the islands and happened to hang out with the RVCA crew, doing some instore appearances and signed a ton of autographs with the boys. I’m gonna stop right there before I try a lame attempt at a witty joke and end up embarrassing myself and eating my meals through a straw for the next six months. We ain’t got nothing but love for them BJ’s.
THE STANDARD SNOWBOARD SHOW
ASG Win Us Over : Volcolm Entertainment Thank god metal is coming back. This record fast-forwards metal straight back to some serious grunge. Tons of guitar rifts and vocals that pay hommage to Layne Stayle. The cool part about this record is that the songs are not metal length meaning they hit hard, fast and loud.
Anything but standard, FUEL TV’s The Standard Snowboard Show has been airing some of the best snow footage I’ve ever seen. And with the lack of snow locally it’s just what I need to get my snow fix before Jack Frost finally decides to cooperate. With featured riders including Danny Kass, The Jackson Brothers, Mark Landvik, Mitch Reed, Chas Guldemond, Jeremy Jones, Mason Aguirre and Mads Jonsson you know it’s gonna be legit. Airing every Tuesday night at 8:00 pm you’re not gonna want to miss a single episode.
HONESTY IS THE NEW BLACK GO HOME CRYING TO MAMA There’s a lot of new clothing companies popping up these days and to tell you the truth, most of them won’t stand the test of time. One that has caught our eye this month is Momma’s Boys from San Clemente. Check out their stuff, at www.xmxbx. com which ranges from mens, womens and some especially cool kids clothing that will make sure your little one never gets beat up in preschool.
GABE KLING X JAGUARS

While most WCT’ers were using their off time to train and hone their skills at their home breaks, rookie Gabe Kling took to Alltel Stadium to watch his home team, the Jacksonville Jaguars, get spanked by the Indianapolis Colts. Regardless of the outcome, Sir Klingon was having a grand old time with fellow Florida surfers Zander Morton, Eric Taylor, Jimmy Wilson and Jody Davis. All were sporting their Kling-inspired custom DVS Jaguar Shoes, donning teal from head-to-toe and they even managed to get a little pre-game airtime on ESPN’s Monday Night Countdown. Though disappointed with the loss Gabe stated that the Jag’s completely redeemed themselves by taking down the Chargers a few games later.
Snow art has come a long way in just a short period of time and more and more galleries are popping up on the regular. The latest temp gallery I just had to check out went down at “The Artery” in “The Camp” this past month in Costa Mesa. Great stuff, with renowned artists Chad Carothers, Joe Polillo, Joe Singer, Justin Lovato, Liz Davis, Rob Mack, Shawn Miles Carney, and Alex Funderburk everyone was entertained.

Words: Matt Patterson :: Photo: Courtesy ASP Tostee Mick Fanning wins the world title and breaks the streak! Over the last seven years the surfing world has waited with baited breath as world titles have been on the line and battled for amongst a handful of uber-qualified athletes. However, the only two guys to bring the hardware home in this millennium have been our two favorite suspects: Kelly and Andy. Until now, that is. For the first time since Occy’s remarkable comeback in 1999 an Australian has won the world title, broke the Kelly and Andy streak and officially announced to the world that the backfield of the WCT can take down these two world champions. Mick Fanning came out of the gates this year with a focus that hasn’t been seen before. Mick won the first event of the year at Snapper Rocks and never let go of his lead. He wrapped up the title in Brazil this year and will cruise into Hawaii with the world title all locked up as the rest of the crew battle for position in the Pipe Masters. Now that Fanning has won a world title, we shouldn’t expect him to slow down anytime soon. In fact, now that he has seemingly “figured it out”, it’s likely that he will find his place on the podium in a large position of next years events too. Another likely candidate to go on a run like Mick’s is the everpresent Taj Burrow whose campaign for the title started early like Mick’s but could not quite keep up. Now that Mick has broke down the barriers that separated Andy and Kelly from the rest of the pack – it’s a pretty good bet that Taj will come out of the gates next march much the same way Mick did this year. The ASP is certainly more fun to watch, follow and root for than any other organized action sports category, and with super heroes like Mick on the rise, it will definitely be even more entertaining next year.

Interview with Bob Hurley regarding “Hurley Recommends” Kiosks How do you think the “Hurley Recommends” kiosks will be beneficial to Hurley. Music makes the world a better place. If we can be a small part of that, we benefit. How do you feel about the titles that are being put into the kiosks (Avenged Sevenfold, the White Stripes, Tegan and Sara, Bless the Fall, etc)? These are bands that are changing the status quo. People with ideas and passion.... they have something to say and they need to be heard. We recommend them because it is great music that you can sing along to and stomp your feet to. How will this change the music industry? The music industry has changed forever. Since all the music is free, it’s really tough for young bands to make it. Music has contributed so much to Hurley... now Hurley is giving back to music. What are you thoughts on this? Music inspires us and brings people together. We feel good about connecting people and inspiring people. There aren’t many places for kids these days to purchase music. Do you think having these kiosks will be advantageous in getting awesome music into the hands of kids, and will eventually draw kids to Hurley? Well, our mission is to be a microphone for youth and to give them power. Use our talent for good not evil. We love having the positive energy and the optimism around, so I hope so. What would you like to see happen with this project? What would be the ideal outcome? Hurley has had a long-standing relationship with music so; it only seems natural for a project like this to occur. It would be really cool if we were able to work with our friends that own stores to connect bands with kids... and kids with bands. Active will be the first retailer to participate in the “Hurley Recommends” program. Why were they chosen as the first to be involved? Active is so progressive. Shane and John just get it. They love their customers and we love them. First and foremost, Active and Hurley have always been about the kids. Working with them on stuff like this is incredibly inspiring. Active rocks!

Words: Matt Patterson :: Photo: Jeffery Jones The action sports world has produced countless bands from the athletes that participate as professional surfers, skaters and snowboarders – usually with similar results; lackluster performances and contrived stage acts. However, all that’s changing. For the first time in a long time a truly interesting indystyle band has emerged from the Orange County scene and made a mark for themselves despite the fact that they are fronted by a professional surfer. Maybe that is just the reason they’ve had this success. The front man, Alex Knost, isn’t really a pro surfer. He’s an artist who surfs. And backed by a competent band whose commitment is truly unquestionable. The recent success that the Japanese Motors have had comes in the form of signing a record deal with Vice Records. The label bears the same name of its parent company, Vice Magazine. Other bands on the label include Bloc Party and the Black Lips, so it’s safe to say the Motors are in good company. If you missed the Japanese Motors at the Vice party at ASR, or haven’t yet been lucky enough to see them at one of their So Cal venues, then now is the time to drop everything you are doing. Put away your pre-conceived ideas about what a band with a pro surfer front man once were – and go see these guys. You will not be disappointed.

Age: 20 Sponsors: Volcom, Adio, Spy, Vestal, Dakine Home: Wurtulla, Sunshine Coast Years surfing: About 10 Hello there Mitch. The inquiring minds over at BL!SSS want to get into your tiny, inferior brain. What’s your weird ass up to? Just been cruising at home for about a week now, getting on the sip with the boys. Going to Hawaii next week so it’s just been sick to have a couple of weeks at home. You’re killing it over there on the Junior Pro scene right now, correct? Um sorta, the end of the year wasn’t as good as the start. I won the Australian Pro Junior Series and I just found out yesterday that I won the ASL Hottest 100. So I’m pretty stoked. How come hardly anyone has heard of you over in the States? Haha, I don’t know, maybe blame that one on Mikey G. Hopefully now that I won the Juniors, Volcom will start helping me build my profile over there in the States. What the Junior season like for you? Who were you competing against? Probably my biggest threat was Julian Wilson, he ended up finishing 2nd. Between the two of us we won 7 out of the 11 contests throughout the year. Heath Joske has been ripping this year also. Are there any Americans you compete against? Yeah I did the Pro Junior at Lowers this year and last year. As well as the Lost Pro Junior in Huntington Beach a couple of times, so I have competed against heaps of the guys over there. How’s the competition level over there compared to the U.S.? Um… in Australia the Junior series is pretty much your main goal from when you turn about 17, so I think everyone is a lot hungrier for the win. Whereas in the States, there are not as many comps and it’s not as big of a deal if you win the series. A lot of the guys from over there would rather do the QS events. How do you think you rack up against some of the heavy hitters on the QS? Well I did a few of the QS events this year so I kinda know what to expect. It’s going to be fuckin’ hard! I get a main round seed into the comps here in Oz so that will definitely help out for the first half of the year. Where the fuck is Maroochydore? It’s pretty much in the middle of the Sunshine Coast, it’s where I used to live but I just moved down the Coast a little bit to Wurtulla. All the towns around here have hell Abo names. Are there any waves up there or do you surf the Great Barrier Reef? Haha, I have never been to the Great Barrier Reef but we get a few fun waves around here through winter and usually around when the Quiky Pro is on. It’s pretty lame though, almost as bad as Newport. You had a rough break at DBah this year with your car getting broken into. Tell us a little about it.
56
Yeah, I was on my way down the Coast to a Junior event and I just stopped at DBah for a quick surf but when I came in my car was gone. It had about 7 or 8 boards in it plus my laptop and shit so I was pretty rattled. Every surfer knows how drunk you Aussies like to get. What’s your excuse? Even if we don’t want to get drunk, everyone just cooks ya and tells you that “you’re not very Australian,” so it’s pretty hard not get drunk all the time. Tom Rudd tells us you turn into the Spawn. Who is the Spawn? He’s like this evil, evil thing that lives inside me waiting to get out at any chance he gets. “The Spawn of Satan,” he’s not really scared of anything and very destructive. When I wake up in the morning I have no idea what he’s gotten into until I look in the mirror and I will usually have a black eye or some shit. It’s heavy, I hate him. I’ve always known you as weird Mitch for how creepy you get. Is there any correlation? Nah, I’m just a bit of a creep. Living next to the Gold Coast, do you enjoy “Schoolies Week?” Yeah, it’s the most amazing thing ever when you’re about 16 or 17. Everyone
“I wake up in the morning I have no idea what he’s gotten into until I look in the mirror and I will usually have a black eye or some shit”
has just graduated so they all go down to the Goldy for the week and hire out units right on the beach and get really, really drunk and have lots of sex. Its sick! Little bit old for that now though. You had a pretty good run in Cali this last May. Tell us about it. Yeah it was fun, I like going over there around that time for the Volcom contest. We got a couple of waves and I won the air show, got a bit of coin so I was stoked! I can’t remember it all but I know you shot yourself in the hand with my CO2 pellet gun afterwards. How’s your hand feeling? Haha, that was heavy, I still have a bit of bone floating around in my finger and a perfect little scar on my arm. I’ll show ya in Hawaii. Tell us about your good mate Tom Rudd. You guys act like you’re married. What’s up with that?
Yeah we traveled a lot on the Junior Series together but I haven’t really seen him much this year. He is a mad frotha and I think he is into guys. Did you cry when the Crocodile Hunter died? I know I did. Nah, I didn’t cry but I know it was one of the heaviest things I ever heard. They just had Steve Irwin day Yesterday. It was all over the news and shit. Are you planning on spending anytime in Hawaii this year? Yeah, I’m actually heading over next week for about a month so hopefully I will get some waves. What else is on tap for ’08? Just try and do a few trips at the start of the year, try and get some photos and footage together then pretty much just hit the QS. What do you want to tell people about Mitch Coleborn that we already haven’t covered?
Probably heaps of shit but I don’t really know either. Are you single? No, sorry ladies. Any fetishes? Just bestiality, no big deal. What do you like to do for fun? Just party, go and see live shows and go to festivals and stuff like that. Alright Mitch, all fun aside do you have any last words? When in doubt, go the brown. No. Like what would it read on your tombstone? Rat poison only kills rats.
Eighteen is my new favorite number. Come to think of it, it always has been. At eighteen years old I moved out of my parents house. At eighteen years old I bought my first, and last, pack of cigarettes. At eighteen years old I walked into a tattoo shop and got some fresh ink and I thought I was so cool. But most importantly, this months’ Super Taste, Danielle, is (drum roll please)… a whopping eighteen. That’s right, legal, single meat. Which is the same reason why sixteen is my favorite number when I’m in Hawaii, but that’s a whole other story. Regardless, when you see Danielle cruising the dangerous streets of Corona Del Mar this summer feel free to hit on her because… she is now eighteen years old.

“Chris is one of those new breeds of hot boys on wheels.” -Clifford Unsworth, Destructo.
Interview: Rob Brink Intros to interviews are boring and cliché. No one ever writes good ones anymore. Basically, if you suck at interviewing, or the person you interviewed is a turd, a great way to cover that up is to write a clever intro. Like, I’d sit here and tell you some stuff about Chris Gregson and how good he is on a skateboard and what a cool cat he is. Or maybe even get real abstract and write something completely unrelated and pass it off as “cryptic art.” But why would you want to hear me say it when I just spent an hour on the phone with him and you can read about it for yourself, right? So Chris, I found six different Chris Gregson MySpace pages. Why do you have so many? Are you serious? I have one. But I don’t make my own MySpace pages. Did you do the one with the Regina Spektor music on it? Uh, no. I have like some sweet like banjo music. Oh, I see. You’re the one named “Fagasaurus.” That’s me! What can I say? This other one says “Crusty Chris. My name’s Chris Gregson and I’m tall. I would do anything in my power for
Jesus Christ. Jesus loves you. Thanks for nothing.” No. That’s not mine. Why are people making up fake Gregson profiles? Do you think people starting these are just making fun of you? Probably. That’s what I would do. There’s another one that says your interests are “I do nothing. All day I just sit at home in a dark corner.” (Laughs) Are you serious? Yeah, and then it says that your favorite book is the bible, and, that you’d like to meet, Carmen Electra. And it says you’re 41 years old.
It says I sit in a dark room all day? Yeah, and your headline quote is: “It’s Friday, I’m in love.” Then there’s the Chris Gregson fan site. It has three friends. Hey, what can I say? People want to be on my fan site page. Yeah, but one of ‘em is MySpace Tom. One of ‘em is you and the other is your friend Rebecca. That doesn’t even count. You have a fan page with no fans! How come I’m not in your top friends? Cause, you’re not. Why are you called Crusty
Chris? When I went to school everyone found out that I didn’t wash my hair for a while and started calling me that. It’s just stupid. I stopped washing my hair and then like, I started getting all these like weird scabs on my scalp one time. Has that ever happened to you? No. I just don’t wash my hair really. It’s just like, whenever it’s clean, it’s like it just falls in my face, and I can’t do anything with it but when it’s dirty, I can just do whatever I want with it. I can just, it doesn’t like fall. It just stays wherever I put it.
F.S Flip Disaster Revert
Do you ever put product in it? No. It’s just like, grease. Do you know how obsessed with your hair you are? You tell me when you’re gonna dye your hair and cut your hair. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but you’re way into your hair. Admit it… Yeah, cause it’s annoying. Whenever it’s blonde, it’s super blonde, and everyone calls me Sunshine, so everyone’s like, “So you’re trying to be Sunshine again?” I’m like, “Yeah, I guess so.”
Feeble 14 Irvine
And where’d the name Gay Danzig come from? Oh my gosh, I dunno, Clifford.
When we went to Arizona like for the Phoenix am contest. He asked what kind of music I listened to and I’m like, “I dunno, like music with girl singers.” And he was like, “You need to listen to some Danzig. Your hair looks like Danzig. So, from now on, if you don’t listen to Danzig. I’m gonna call you Gay Danzig.” So I think that’s where it came from. And then everyone just started calling me that. Actually just you did, and Clifford. So which nickname do you prefer? Crusty Chris, Sunshine or Gay Danzig? (Laughs) I don’t like any of ‘em - I don’t care. Call me whatever.
If you’re worried about any sort of gay reputation I would go with the Crusty Chris. “Sunshine” is kinda gay. Kinda gay? Are you worried about people thinking your gay? No, I don’t care if people think I’m gay. I know I’m not gay, so let them think what they think. The same way people think I’m gay, I’m pretty sure they’re gonna think you’re gay. Probably, but you’re not gay, you’re … wait, no, cause you know, in high school, no one thought I was gay. You said everyone thought you were gay.
Yeah, you’re right. You just got me. Yeah, so I’m a little ahead in the ranks. Are you as tall as me? I dunno, like 6’3. Oh, you’re gonna get taller than me dude. I’m like 6’4’ 1/2, 6’5. I hope I don’t get taller. I hate being tall. But you’re still a growing boy. Are you still a virgin, saving it for marriage? Since you’re into like religion and stuff. Yeah, at least that’s what I wanna do.
Wallie into Bank It’s pretty rad that you can get a whole interview out of your six MySpace pages. I’m kind of against MySpace. I don’t like it, but it’s just one of those things… you kind of have to have one. You don’t have to, but once you get one, it’s addicting, like Starbucks. You into green tea? No! That’s disgusting! I can’t even drink those Arizona green teas, they’re not coffee. Everyone probably thinks you’re gay cause you like green tea. Get coffee or something! Don’t go to Starbucks and get green tea!
Dude, but when I’m 60 and your 60, I won’t have cancer, and you will, cause all my green tea is gonna fight off all the cancer. Yeah, but I’m hopin’ not to get cancer. Hoping? You think that’s gonna work? But actually, you can pray at church to not have cancer. You have that advantage over me. Yeah, seriously, you’re screwed! Do you still like go to church with Figgy and all those dudes?
Yeah. I try to on Sundays. Recently I haven’t been able to but we’ve been going on Thursdays to this place called the Sanctuary. It’s Sumner’s church, and Christian Hosoi and like a bunch of skaters go there. It’s pretty sick. Do you still not curse? No, I don’t curse! If I gave you a hundred bucks, would you say a curse word? For a hundred bucks? I have like less than five dollars in my bank account. Are you serious? Of course I would.
So, if you say the word “fuck” right now, I’ll give you ten bucks next time I see you. No, I don’t want to. ‘Cuz I know you won’t give me ten bucks! I’ve never given you a reason not to trust me. I’ve blown you up. You’re sketchy, I don’t know. I could just see you doing this so when this comes out you can have me saying a cuss word. That’s what you want. So, you invented the RobBrink.com stake team. How did that idea come about?
Seriously, you owe me. We were in Amsterdam and it was me, Figgy, and a bunch of people— the crew that we skate with. And you gave me Brink stickers before I left and like the captain of our team was like “What’s Brink?” And I was like, “It’s Rob Brink!” And I went and put it on my list of sponsors for the contest and they announced it. I pretty much told you that I started a skate team and you didn’t really have a say in it. Now everyone wants to be on! Collin Provost, David Loy, Figgy. It’s like, all the rage with the Irvine kids.
Dude, Irvine’s so sick! Everyone hates on me for being so psyched on Irvine but they’re just jealous cause they don’t live in Irvine. Dude, I’m so psyched on Irvine! I don’t do anything else besides skate. And there’s like so many spots so why leave Irvine if I don’t have to? Tell me your obsession with crails. (Laughing) When am I gonna stop doing crail grabs? Probably never! Take it to the next level! How am I supposed to take a
crail grab to the next level? Crail grab the mega ramp or something? Well maybe try like kickflip crail down some stairs or like lipslide crail, down the handrail, or like a feeble crail. I was doing 5-0 crails the other night out at etnies park. That was sick! Tell me about IrvineSucks. com Yeah, it’s sick. I do blogs. There’s this guy Nick that does
the whole site, and this other guy Richard Bacon who has his own blog thing, and they’re both Irvine filmers. That’s actually who we skate with all the time. But it’s all local spots and every local skater in the local skate scene and stuff. It’s the hot thing in Irvine. If you’re on that you’re like legit in Irvine. (Laughs) Seriously. My friend Joey was like, “My goal in skating is to be on IrvineSucks. com.” Wow. Ok, I’m done with you. Cool man. Killer interview!

Zach Hooper is a pain in the ass. He made me write this. Now look at the damn pictures and then slap yourself in the face. Then call Zach (970-319-9084) and buy framed copies for your living room, bitch. Why photos? Ever since I was a little kid I just enjoyed looking at photos and trying to figure out how they made it happen. My family wasn’t that well off with money so it took me a while to get my hands on a camera but as soon as I did it was like magic. Your entire surroundings at that moment are locked in time forever for your viewing pleasure and they just might carry on well beyond your time here. I think that’s pretty cool and that also makes history. Right? Southern Colorado, it’s pretty different huh? It is a lot more different than here in Aspen that’s for sure. I actually started my snow career down south in Durango, CO, which is more

Goals as a photographer? To beat Zimmerman out of his cover shot streak. A staff job that pays well with a company I believe in. The ability to upgrade my photo equipment every year and ultimately have mastered my craft well enough so I am the most sought after photographer ever; whether it be National Geographic or Playboy. Favorite trend in snowboarding (any time period)? Baseless low backs and t-bolts on twin boards.
Least favorite trend? Leash laws. Did it ever make any god damn sense? Snowmobile, chairlift, or hiking and why? Chairlift yes, but on your own hill, hiking only when I need to but snowmobiling is just the tits for me. There is nothing like that smell when you ďŹ re her up in the morning. You let your sled heat up and sputter out the cold from the previous night as you rap with your crew about the mission at hand. up in the grill. Your buddies behind you and your off at 90 mph! People from the chairlift are watching you from afar with envy and hikers are choking on your god given right as an American citizen. Then you arrive to your destination after riding wheelies, high marking huge peaks, jumping everything, rallying through creek beds and then its time to shred. It just doesn’t get any better than snowmobiling into the unknown.

Who has a better eye, you or your brother? (Aaron Hooper is a filmmaker for Burton) This is such a typical question that all my friends love to aim at either me or my brother, otherwise stirring the pot if you will Kyle. If you knew my brother and I you would know that we can be a very volatile combination at times but that doesn’t change the fact that I love the kid to death. The way I look at
it is that Aaron is very good at knowing what is the illest angle is for lining up his shots with a motion camera and then match that with his edits and it’s a whole other monster. We both have very similar styles on capturing snowboarding but I think that it just works different when you have a motion camera in your hand versus a still camera. However, for some photographers they shoot like they are making a movie by just holding down the shutter and firing a hundred shot sequence. I pride myself on just taking one frame per photo so I guess to answer your question I think that I have a much more skilled eye at knowing where I want the action to stop. Photographer role models? photography or life. His lighting is absolutely amazing and then he just brings such a carefree attitude to the table that I try and take notes from. Blotto has basically been my business/financial/equipment advisor while trying to come up in this game of greats like Jeff Curtes. Dean Blotto Grey just has a super unique approach to getting the shot. Every time I think I have enough equipment and that I am the man I just go hang out with BLT for a minute and get grounded real fast. Contests? Good or bad? Contests don’t mean shit! Not to us soul shredders. Best place in Colorado to ride? Aspen, Colorado don’t ya know… Why haven’t you moved to LA, Whistler or Salt Lake, like all the others photographers? I tried Whistler for two years and if you don’t have a green card sponsor, Canada doesn’t want you to be there for too long. Great people and good times though, eh?! Salt Lake? Well let’s just say that I like to visit. As for LA, I like to be there in the summer, well a little

more south is this place called Newport Beach. That place is my home away from Aspen and if there were still orange groves everywhere I might just still be living there full time. I just love Aspen, it’s a great community of people and one of the only mountain towns that you can actually make money at year-round. So all you girls that are looking for a good mountain town to live at, try Aspen. There is no shortage of men. When is a picture just right? When you take it. What do you like about your photos? I like that they’re photos of my friends having the greatest time ever doing what we love. What don’t you like? Liars, cheaters, people without souls, selfishness, dudes that own dump trucks, snowler bladders and shellfish. What’s next? The end.
By: Daniel Russo I drive down to Pipe from Pupukea Park on Kam Hwy walk into Jamie’s yard to check the waves. “It’s flat, no waves. What should we do?” says Jamie. His friend Brian looks over with a big grin and says, “You know what we’re doing today Bill.” “Let’s dive, I think the spot could be holding. Russo you want to go? You know how to use tanks and go 100 feet down?” asks Jamie. “No worries,” I say, “Don’t worry about me, just show me the basics. I can keep up”. Jamie replies, “Let’s go grab my ski at my V-Land house.” So we leave his beachfront house to go to his second house to pick up his ski and dive gear. What most people don’t know is that over the past five years, Jamie has been doing some smart investing with all those contest checks. And why is he doing this you may ask? “If I don’t I will be just like everyone else here who grew up on the North Shore - pushed out by someone looking to buy a house out here just because they have the money and then rent it out or turn around and sell it for even more. I’m just really fortunate to be in the position I’m in and looking out for my future.” So we hook up the ski, load the gear into his Tacoma and head to Haleiwa harbor. As we drive I ask him how he’s feeling about his surfing these days. “I’m just very comfortable right now and I have no stress, I just got back from the biggest swell of the summer in Tahiti, towed Chopes for the first time and watched my friends get barreled out of their minds. Now I’m heading for a dive, life can’t get much better than that!” As we load the ski into the water he mentions next week he should have a second ski from Etnies to go along with his Red Bull one. We head out the harbor with our full suits on and the tanks on the back of the ski – it’s a no brainier life is good these days for Jamie. As Jamie and Brian look for their drop zone I get my tank and fins on. No spear gun for this dive. I can’t tell you what were looking for but it’s modern day treasure hunting! We work are way down slowly letting our ears pop until we

reach the bottom. I can’t tell you anymore about what we’re doing down there because I was sworn to secrecy never to tell. After about 20 minutes we make our way back up get to the ski and take our gear off. What did we find? I got ..., Brian got... but Jamie ends up being the most productive. He has the largest and most colorful ones. We all joke about how he got bit by an eel a couple months ago doing what we just did on the Westside. An eel almost bit off his left middle finger while he had his hand in a cave. “I pretty much thought it was gone but the doctors fixed me up nicely. It canceled a trip to the Philippines I was planning on doing but that’s ok, I got barreled enough in Tahiti and I spent some time in Japan with my girlfriend. I got to see some really good setups and found some potential for new spots.” Now he’s laughing because the ocean is hooking him up now after almost loosing his finger a couple months prior. After two more dives we call it a day. We head back to his house to unload the ski and gear. I noticed a bunch of grass dug up in his yard and Jamie mentions that it’s from the pigs up the valley. His V-Land house sits right next to a riverbed and has one of the best-landscaped yards on the North Shore thanks to his dad Mico. As we make our way back to his Pipe house we cruise down Kenui Rd. When we pass a very well known house at pipe he slows down, rolls down the window and yells, “That’s my house now but the bank owns it. It’s going to be weird living in a big
house and not my little studio I’m at now.” Just when we’re about to call it a day I realize my truck has been stolen. I just bought a ‘85 Toyota pickup. I’ve only had it for one week and some one steals it right in front of Pipe. It just goes to show that living on the North Shore is still rough and if you’re not careful shit can hit the fan really quick. But if you’re one of the lucky few like Jamie and you play it smart you can live a great life on the North Shore of Hawaii.

DJ Wade was watching the real cops in the crowd and grabbing his NWA record so he could play “Fuck the Police”, but we had to subdue him from doing it despite how boyishly excited he was getting. In the meantime, Schaefer, Clements, Rob and the rest of the Damn Am crew were dressed up as the cops from Reno 911 and trying to assert some sort of authority over the throngs of kids that swarmed the course. The place was packed with the best Am’s from all over the country and world for that matter, and despite what the girls would say, size did not matter in this case; some of the smallest guys to enter the contest were dominating the rest of the field. With that, move over you lazy fuckers, because the little guys are coming for your job, get to work or beware.
Nihilist has been on rampage for the last several years. They have risen through the ranks and become a favorite of skateboarders and dirts from around the globe. They came to Damn Am this year, set up on the centerpiece, and unleashed their fury while the best trick went down. The party tent’s inhabitants were in the front lines, pumping fists and pounding beers for the entire set.
Scott Decenzo got slipped into the contest last minute. He was a worthy addition, and landed himself in the finals. This switch frontside hurricane shows off why his switch skating propelled him to victory.
The little man from Illinois brought in solid lines and proper form all weekend long. Chazz Ortiz, kickflip backlip.

Louie Lopez has been coming up hard over the last year, turning heads everywhere with consistent skating and tech bangers. He did this kickip boardslide shuvit in his run. Ryan Decenzo is one half of the wonder brothers from Canada. Smooth and technical skating like this nollie heelip over the pyramid left him in 3rd place.
Schaefer and crew dressed up as the Reno 911 posse on Sunday. Here he does his best Sergeant Dangle representation.
I don’t know much about Ricky Webb, but I do know that he had proper front feebles down the rail on lock.
Donovan Piscopo was one of several little buddies to make it to the finals. He skated the entire course and had these stylish crailblunts on lock.
Manny Santiago sprained his ankle on Wednesday night before the contest started. With the help of Advil, ice and a couple days off, he was able to skate the contest and make the semi cut. He was throwing these 360 flips in his runs.
Luan De Oliveira came in hot from a victory at GVR a couple weeks before. He was probably the most talked about kid in the contest, as everyone was wondering how an unknown guy came in and took out everybody at the Etnies event. At GVR, he did not let anybody down. He packed the most technical lines of the contest, which included switch 270 frontside 360 heelflips. Had he stayed on during the finals, he would have likely walked away with the victory.
Axel Cruysberghs was at Damn Am again this year. Though not much larger than last year, his skating was highly improved. He had bigspin frontside boardslides locked down in every run. Here he shuvits out of one as well.
Interview: Scott Richards
Is that your real name? No, it’s just a catchy alias. It fits well with the current work and is easier to remember than Randy Noborikawa.
Better late than never. So when do you paint now? Well, the only remaining hours left are from 6pm till the next morning, so that’s pretty standard. I enjoy my sleep disorder.
What’s the first thing you remember drawing as a kid? Some kind of fucked up hot rods and big space battles, maybe some messed up Star Wars figures as well.
How do you start working? I usually come home from work, eat some Taco Mesa, bang on the drums for a while and do as many pull ups as I can. By that time it’s 9 or 10 pm. I hate starting - hate, hate, hate it.
When did you start to become serious about painting? Last year. No, I’ve been painting and drawing all my life and went to school and the whole bit, but didn’t quite have the confidence to rely on painting for a livelihood. I’ve had a creative job for the last five years working for Quiksilver and that’s splendid, but now it’s time to paint what I want to paint. Took me a while eh?

You seem to have a Latin flavor in your work, can you explain that? I’ve always liked the big Latin artists: Frida Kahlo, Orozco, Siqueiros, Posada, Day of the Dead, etc… I love the homebuilt altars and the “naive” feel they’re built with. My work is somewhat based on kitschy pop icons, but with a bit of a twist to them.
Are you Mexican? No, I’m a mutt of Philipino, Hawaiian, Caucasian, you know. Where did you come up with the idea to use neon in your paintings? I’ve always loved the effects of neon, ever since I saw Vegas. It can be soft and subtle or gaudy as shit. I studied neon in San Francisco for a while at school. It was one of the few places you could learn. I was able to work with David Svenson, a pioneer in glass. A crazy guy, but cool. So I got hooked on it. Some people aren’t ready for it, they don’t get it, or understand it. Fuck it, I like it, it’s different. Tell me about the two way painting. How did you come up with that? I went to this amazing museum in Melbourne. They had an exhibit of illusions throughout history. I saw that style of painting from the 1800’s, real inspiring and clever. I said, “I’m doing that.” So do you travel much? I was fortunate to work with a creative team that spans the globe. I’ve been able to see some beautiful places like Brazil, Peru, Australia, Japan, London, Barcelona and Milan. It’s hard to come back here. Do you do all the wood working also, like on the luchador cabinet? No. My pal Alec Dressel, a fine wood smith, helped me construct that nightmare. I drew it up and did some basic cuts, but he did the technical stuff. He’s a maniac. He was George Michael for Halloween.
“I want to get a microscope and look at stuff like back in 6th grade.
Did you shape the boards too? Hell no, they are shaped by Eric Christenson, a good friend of mine. He is an amazing shaper. He keeps his stealth profile by riding bikes as much as he shapes surfboards, as depicted by his logo. Seriously, he’s a master craftsman and he lets me design wacky tails. So you get help from people from time to time? Absolutely. I know my limits. You wouldn’t want to see me behind a planer. I also get help from one of my teachers, Kunio Ohashi. He is a master at neon. He built an amazing neon ceiling installation in Eddie Murphy’s house. What do you do for fun? I have ADD. I’m all over the place – I play music, keyboards, Latin percussion. I love bikes, surfing, video games, you know, the same old shit. Doesn’t everyone have a million interests? Actually, I want to get a microscope and look at stuff like back in 6th grade. Put the wonder back in the small things in life. Um, ok. Any shows coming up? In early 2008 I will have a show at the LAB in Costa Mesa. Also, Evocal in Costa Mesa. That’s a great spot and you should check it, the best thing to happen to this damn town. Cheers to Brett Walker. Inspiring on a weekly basis. How do we see your stuff in the future? Just look for the bright lights or giant ice cream cones. www.elsugarskull.com www.ecsurfboards.com

What do you get when you mix tropical ocean water, scorching hot sand, swell out of the southwest, pounding beach breaks, Edgar’s Hotel, hotdogs from Willie’s, Myspace only available in town, surfers from the Vans team, other surf dudes from various locations on the planet and one of the best/hardest working surf photographers in the world? That’s simple: another Mainland Mexico adventure with Nelly, the Vans team and friends. The crew consisted of your basic staples for a Mainland Mex trip. We had our Hawaiian Pipeline Posse representatives, Kalani Chapman and Mikey Bruneau joining us from the North Shore of Oahu. Glad to have them considering it looked like Pipeline and Backdoor almost everywhere you looked out there. Unfortunately the spit counter broke after a few days so we never actually found out the totals for the week. Coming from Southern Cal we had the heir to the No Fear thrown and young upstart Britt Galland.
126
Nathan Fletcher
Also from So Cal, although he spends little time there due to the lack of huge hollow waves, we had the world famous extremist, Mr. Nathan Fletcher. A permanent fixture was the semi local crew originally from the States, but residing there in Mex to eliminate having to fly down when the swell comes up as well as figuring out how to check on their jet skis when Brian Connelly wasn’t around to tow them down there in the hurricane chaser. Connelly actually did show up later in our trip when the swell came up big. He followed the swell from the Tahiti where he had been continuing his ventures to, “keep his eyes from drying.” The “step off this crew” actually didn’t come across like that, considering I was able to hitchhike a couple rides out to the line up as well as a few step-off runs for myself. In the step off corner we had (a gentlemen who had already earned the right from years of paddling into huge pits to step off at will) the one and only Mighty
Hopper
Matt Rockhold
Morcs (Todd Morcom), who had recently relocated to mainland in pursuit of constant gaping pits. They’re just too hard to find in good old Florida. Then we had full time mainland local and big wave legend hell man, Greg Russ (who the year before happened to paddle into one of the biggest barrels I have ever seen on footage and was held down for two waves). Hopper, not because he hops the shoulder that’s for sure (who is not actually related to the Beschen brothers but I can see where the resemblances in there surfing styles could cause that misunderstanding), was also on the trip. And on the down low coming out of the pit and causing more “who was that guy” calls than anyone ever was Justin from San Diego. Rounding out the crew was, oh yeah baby yes you guessed it - any time you have one Dave Nelson you’re going to have a Santa Cruz entourage to follow. Accompanying Nelly to help document the trip we had a Mr. Luke Ogden. He is a master photographer that worked in the skateboarding world for years. There wasn’t a question that anybody could ask about photography that Luke Russ Smith
didn’t know. Behind the video camera we had Graham Nash who is the go to guy for video. He is currently working for Vans so you can check the webcast on this trip at vans.com. The Santa Cruz surfers included big wave legend and still flaring like a freshly fired off flair, Peter “The Condor” Mel (still a favorite to win the Mavericks contest considering he is hands down the best out there). Out of this world and quite possibly out of his mind, look out Jim Carey we had the head baby Hercules himself, Mr. Homer Henard. As well as the big man with big hands and for sure the hardest working professional in the sport of surfing; and yes I wonder myself folks how does that big man soar like that with such grace, Matt “Rocky” Rockhold, along with the youngest on the SC Crew but not to be out done by anyone with the two barrels of trip Nick “Ricky Ram” Lamb. We also had the Smith Brothers, little boy Russ and myself, T-hog. Unfortunately, after only one day of surfing on the trip, Russ did a floater to fin shin slice that most likely needed 30 stitches as opposed to the six that Nick Lamb
the young Mexican doctor who looked like he was filling in for his old man that day. Russ stuck it out hoping to surf but ended up just hanging on the porch playing the guitar, but thank God he did. Without Russ playing the guitar the smash hit song, “Cialis Boner” wouldn’t have been created by Homer on this trip. Homer along with the Baby Hercules Boys hit the road this month to perform the hit single at all the hot venues. “Cialis Boner Raining Down on You,” go Herns!
So for me to remember the day-to-day happenings on this trip just couldn’t happen. I have stared into the sunset one too many times to remember all that. But some of the highlights definitely stand out. Willie’s for Dinner We ate almost every meal at our hotel right on the beach. Although the food is really good at the beach it got to the point where the boys wanted to get out and head to town for a change of scenery and maybe a change in comida. Here I am thinking we are gonna head to some place kind of fancy. You know, maybe some surf and turf. I was hoping to get a lobster or something. So we are driving down the strip and I’m looking for a restaurant and Nelly keeps talking about some place named Willie’s. Willie’s sounds good, that works for the crew and I. So we start to slow down and I am looking for the sign that says Willie’s on some building, but I can’t find it. The car stops and Nelly jumps out saying that we are here. We all get out and start to follow Nelly and before we can get to a restaurant
Brian Conley
Homer Hernard
to get seated we stop in front of a hotdog cart on the street and Nelly says to us, “Hey everyone this is Willie!” Apparently Willie is the owner of a hotdog stands that happens to be one of the best hotdog stands I have ever been to. We all dug in, eating two to three dogs each. It wasn’t steak or lobster but it hit the spot. Willie’s secret, well he wrapped all the dogs in bacon. My Brother Russ always said he would eat about anything wrapped in bacon. The truth is anything wrapped in bacon just tastes better. I stand by it and so does Willie. We frequented the cart often for the remainder of the trip. Myspace Withdrawls Going to town was something we did often to break up the monotony of the all day affair at the beach. There wasn’t much to do down at the beach besides surf all day or at least until the wind started to blow. Then all there was to do was sit there and look at the blown out ocean until the afternoon air show began staring Nathan Fletcher. I attempted to go surf with Nathan during these air shows but to tell you the truth they are far more fun to watch from the beach due to the fact that Nathan is hands down the best air show pilot out there. I mean way out there, at least ten to twelve feet out there. The guy boosts these airs that would hurt

an average human and tries to land them. The mind-boggling part is that he not only tries to land them but he occasionally succeeds in doing so. As soon as the air show was over we all would head to town. Once in town no matter where we were or what we are doing we would loose a few guys that would go running off immediately if not sooner. At first I didn’t notice but after the third or fourth time of having to hunt the same guys down when trying to head back to the beach I wondered where and why they disappeared so quickly. Well as we all know the MySpace epidemic has and is spreading rapidly. (It seems to be a good networking tool and a way to keep in touch with a lot of people at once. But what happened to good old emails? There are still carbon copies to send email messages to more than one person.) At the beach with no MySpace in site, while
friend requests lie in limbo and others friends networks grow faster than there own, it’s hard to handle for some. The whole MySpace thing seems like a way to stroke your own ego while selling yourself to others that will potentially want to stroke it along side you. Are all of these millions of friends truly your friends? Anyway some people are really into it and as soon as the car slows down in town they would break into full sprints to the nearest internet café with a internet connection faster than dial up to get there fix. Whatever floats your boat? Just stay out of MyPersonalSpace.com with MySpace.com and get in the car when it’s time to get back to the beach. In the meantime I’ll be getting barrelled while you’re trying to find your next potential girlfriend, gotta love mainland.

Harry is on point. Watch Harrison on a snowboard and a skateboard and you will be blown away. Ever since we were little kids, he has always made everything look perfect, fun and easy. One of my favorite times/earliest memories with Harry was when we were probably 15 years old up in Mammoth. We got wasted and he puked in the sink and clogged it up. I will never forget the shit grin smile on his face and the chunks in the huge beard he usually has and even had then. Nothing is ever too serious, just always
a good time. He’s always into going anywhere and on any adventure having fun with his friends. Whether we are 14 years old, out skateboarding all night, or ‘young adults’ living together and snowboarding, Harry has always been a huge influence. I don’t even know what to write, I just want to read his interview already - One of the most bad ass, smartest, fun to watch, best friend ever! How old are you and where are you from? I am 19 and from Woodland Hills, Ca.
Where did you grow up snowboarding? The first time I went snowboarding was in Mammoth, but I spent most of my time snowboarding at Southern California resorts.
with you a bunch and the Spedale brothers, Joe Carter, Tucker.
What was the closest place for you to go snowboarding? Mountain High was an hour and a half away.
What are your hobbies outside of snowboarding? I would say skateboarding and hanging out with my friends.
Who did you grow up snowboarding with? I snowboarded a lot with Chad Tarbel when I was really little and Kyle Lapicallo. I snowboarded
How do you feel about snowboard contest? Um... I think that they are good in some ways, but mostly bad in everyway.
What influences your everyday life the most? Probably the weather.
What makes them good what makes them bad? I think snowboarding doesn’t need to be a contest and I try not to think of it as any kind of contest. I don’t like that there is pressure to do better then other people.
Do you think that your love for skateboarding affects the way you look at and ride your snowboard? Definitely. I think that skateboarding is probably the most influential thing to me.
I know you really like movies, what kind do you like the most? I like movies with good music. Skateboard related. And I really like Wes Anderson movies. He is good at making them.
What aspects of snowboarding interest you the most? I really like to hit jumps and get in the air. I think rails are really fun too. I like the halfpipe a lot. Is there anything you wish you were better at? I wish I was really good at
halfpipe. I want to be good at that someday. Maybe when I’m a grownup I will figure it out. I just want to do big airs a lot. Who helps you out in snowboarding? Ride gives me some snowboards and Ashburry makes good goggles. Airblaster is giving me some clothing, Flux gave me some bindings, El Bandido makes a good face mask, and Ambiguous hooks up cool jeans. Anything else I get from Valsurf. If you could go anywhere on
any trip tomorrow, where would you go? I would like to go somewhere tropical and there should also be a skatepark and drinks. Pretty much anywhere with my friends. Was it hard growing up in the city and not being able to go snowboarding all the time? It was really frustrating, but I think it helped me to appreciate it more since I didn’t get to go as much as other kids did. Do you have any long-term goals in life? Anything you
would want to do in the next 80 years? I want to snowboard and skateboard as long as my body will let me. I would really like to be 40 years old and still snowboarding and skateboarding often. I don’t need anything super crazy, just to hang out and have fun. Are you a virgin? I was. What kind of music do you like? I really like rock ‘n roll music.
Do you like to read? I like to read, but I would have to be pretty bored to start reading. I have a book called ‘Spliffs’ that I like to read.
people are into that but your style of dress shouldn’t determine the way you act or how you talk, but it seems to be that way for some people at least.
What do you think about snowboarders who try to look like they are gangsters? I think that anybody who is trying really hard to look a certain way is probably not that cool. I think that people that try to look like they’re from the ghetto are just as silly as the people who try to look like they are a gypsy or a rock ‘n roll star or something. I don’t care if
What do you think about video parts? It’s number one on my list of things to do before I die right now. What makes you want to film? So that I can have something to look back on when I’m really old. And I would like to be able to show my parents what it is that I
really do, and what I love at this point in my life. What is more impressive double corks or switch straight air grabs? Tweaked switch grabs. You want to thank anyone? Brandon Richards, Sickles, Jon Francis, Jesse Grankowski, Lance Haker, my Mom and Dad, my little brothers, everyone who tries to help me out and all of my friends.

Thankfully, an amazing documentary film named for the infamous tribe and released worldwide by Berkela Films, is bringing the city’s captivating story to select venues across the country. Narrated by Russell Crowe, the film traces the tale of Kobe, Sunny and Jai Abberton - and includes murder, deceit, fighting and lots of intense surfing action. Screening primarily in and around trade shows and conventions catering to the films core audience, the movie hosted a blow out gala at the Spreckles Theater during ASR this past September in San Diego. Packed with action-sports celebs including Danny Way, The Weatherly brothers, Rene Rene and Christian Hosoi, the film has met critical acclaim from audiences in Las Vegas during the Magic Tradeshow at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino and to a full house of East Coast’s elite surf community and media at the Surf Expo in Orlando. The film also walked

away with two awards at this years Surfer Poll & Video Award including Best Documentary and Best Wipeout, for Richie Vas’ wipeout at Ours. Berkela Films, a Hollywood based production outfit with an exclusive distribution partnership with the newly revamped VAS, is the perfect company to bring the film to American shores. Run by partners Jason Bergh and Sal Masekela, the Berkela team has a firm understanding of how to market and present this unique production. While its primary viewer ship is likely to consist of people with a direct connection to surf culture, Bra Boys is actually a compelling documentary that can ultimately appeal to the masses with a storyline that’s as visually stimulating as it is entertaining. Screenings will continue across the globe leading up to a full theatrical release in March 2008. Check http://www.braboysfilm.com for updates, info and film schedules.

Bone fakie // Famous Team signing away for the kids that came to support the cause November 3rd 2007 was a wonderful day for skateboarding. Skateboarding gave back and in a big way, $100,000 big! Skateboarding gave over $100,000 to The MakeA-Wish Foundation (www.wish.org) to grant wishes for kids with life threatening illnesses. Not some huge ass corporate sponsor, like a drink company or a cell phone company, just skateboarding. This all started in ’97 with a simple demo to raise enough money to make at least one wish come true and 11 years later we’ve raised enough for 80 wishes. That’s $400,000 in 11 years! Unfortunately, every three months we have about 100 kids that need wishes, just in the Houston area alone! Now, why is it important to help make a wish come true for a kid? It offers hope, hell it gives hope, to children that have a life threatening illness. There are so many other organizations that help pay for medical treatments and housing for these families, but Make-A-Wish (MAW) goes to the child and gives them something to change the pace of life. A life that includes chemotherapy, spinal taps, evasive surgeries, hair loss, limbs lost, and living in the hospital for years; basically stealing their childhood away. MAW is there to offer that hope. This year in addition to the $100,000 raised MTV helped grant a wish at our event! Young Kasie wanted to be an actress or meet Ryan Sheckler. She got both! She got to be in an episode of the Life of Ryan show while attending one of the most amazing skateboard demos! Skateboarding giving back, yes we did that! It was our best year yet and I am looking forward to an even better event next year. Thanks goes out to Jeff Taylor & Chris Miller at Adio Footwear; everyone at South Shore Distributing; the Zumiez crew; Jim Thiebaud at Spitfire Wheels, Seamus at Zoo York, Jamie Thomas at Fallen shoes; all the riders that showed up and skated; all the companies that came out and had a booth, bringing riders and product to give out; lastly all the companies that sent product to help make this happen. The first Hurley/Cycle Zombies Motorcycle rally, skate jam & BBQ a few Sundays ago was a big blow out with bells and whistles, hot dogs were burning and zombies were shredding. There were a ton of wicked choppers, cafe racers, triumphs, bobbers, and a guy with a black eye who rode a Vespa up. Meatballs band “Smiling Face Down” was playing the live tunes, and people were showing up with boards strapped to the bars of their bikes ready to go slash & crash.

This summer was supposed to be about sending out resumes, and looking into career opportunities, instead it was chemo vs. radiation, and over 20 days at the luxurious Hoag Hospital Oncology floor. Adam decided immediately after being diagnosed that he wanted to start a foundation that would help raise awareness about Testicular Cancer; and with that the Back on the Board Foundation was born. Licensed by the state of California, the foundation is a “pay it forward” kind of deal. Meaning the foundation is established to help Adam with his medical expenses, and when he is well he will carry on as head of the foundation. The next person that receives assistance will, in turn, agree to help two other people with testicular cancer, when they have recovered.

“We saw the Newport screening as a perfect opportunity to give back to a fellow Newport surfer and friend in need,” says film producer James Lugo. “We reached out to our surf community for help and the response was overwhelming.” ShoresCrew turned their movie screening at the Lido Theater into a huge benefit night with all of the proceeds going to Adam’s foundation. The night included the a sold out screening of Water Tried to Kill Me, a gigantic raffle with surfboards, snowboards, wetsuits and all kinds of goodies from the over two dozen sponsors. The night ended on a high note with a performance by The Pricks. The benefit brought in over $1,500 for the Back on the Board Foundation. Interview: Tim Bergevin
Words: Tim Bergevin It’s been a tremendous year for Grizzly Bear. By being one of the most experimental acts in the use of not only instruments both electronic and traditional, but also vocally. They have garnered much Indie credibility and also praise from mass media. Touring since the end of 2006 supporting the album “Yellow House”, the band has circled the globe and been a main stay on the U.S. and European festival circuit. November saw the band release the EP “Friends” which consists of alternative versions of songs from the “Yellow House” record as well cover versions of GB songs by artists such as CSS, Band of Horses and Atlas Sound (Deerhunter’s Bradford Cox’s solo project). Talking with drummer Chris Bear (his real name) about the band you can tell that as great a year it’s been, it’s nice to be home. “It definitely went by quick. I look back at where we are at and what we were able to do and I feel honored and privileged. I think that also makes us want to work really hard.” With the release of the “Friends” EP and with lots of time to enjoy while not on tour, they are finding time to finish projects that have been neglected like guitarist Daniel Rossen’s other band “Department of Eagles” which has been sitting waiting to be finished for over a year. “We are working on Dan’s stuff
152
and we are also just working on starting to get some new Grizzly Bear songs together. It will probably be a slow process,” as Chris laughs, you can tell he is serious about the band taking their time. “We are going to be mellow about it and not put any time constraints on it.” Bringing in the artists to do the covers for the EP was not a hard task, “Warp Records had heard that CSS was interested in doing a cover and then some other people were as well so they wanted to put out an EP of people doing our stuff. But we also had a lot of stuff that had developed out of us playing live a ton so we thought it would be cool to document that as well.” That “stuff” turns out to make the bulk of the EP with new versions of tracks representing more of how the band delivers its songs live. Live is really the best place to start with Grizzly Bear. Yes the records are rich with amazing melody and vocal harmony but to see it in person is another story, “I don’t know if people know what to expect when they come to see us. If we tried to do everything true to the record live we would have to have a choir.” Without the choir the four members of the band make an impression and are not to be missed.
Photo: Marc Lemoine :: Interview: Tim Bergevin It’s odd going to an amphitheater for what I can now refer to as an “adult” show. Walking in with a bunch of people who you can tell have not been to many shows for awhile or ever was never more apparent than minutes into Ms. Feist’s set when the cat calls of “sit down” begin. All of this is fine with me but only because Leslie Feist is that good. Having the pedigree of not only being a member of Broken Social Scene, she has been roommates with Peaches and provided guest vocals on numerous albums. While many people are just finding out about her here in the States, she has won two Juno Awards in her native Canada as well as having a Platinum record there. Standing behind her Guild Starfire guitar with her long hair, bangs and dressed perfectly in a knee high dress and stockings, she instantly has the crowd singing along while her voice floats over them. Switching from piano and guitar she is a complete show woman who knows exactly how to handle a crowd. She has the entire audience eating out of
154
her hand as she divides them in half trying to have them sing soprano pitched “ahh’s”. When this fails the band launches into the first single, “My Moon, My Man” off her latest record “The Reminder”. Backed by a band including a horn section, she holds her own on guitar during a heartfelt set. She playfully calls the Gibson an “impossible room” due to its large size and then immediately asks the LA Times, “please don’t quote me on that.” It’s then that she launches into the song that has broken her here in the States to the excitement of all those new fans in attendance. “1234” is a great song and you can’t argue with the power of being the featured artist in an iPod commercial. Thankfully there is more to Leslie Feist than just the hype of this ad. As she walks off the stage to a venue that is still packed and cheering wildl, you can only hope that this will bring some of those people who sat down the whole show out to more concerts. And who knows, maybe they will even stand.
