Now for a moment, consider your home, when we say that the two computers in your home are interconnected, it is done by local area network, but if we say that the computer in your home is connected with the computer in London or any far off place, we would call it Wide Area Networking or WAN. You can also say, WAN is set of numbers of LAN's. A device called router connects LAN to WAN. Internet is the biggest application of WAN. We are accessing data via internet from all over the world. We share things, we send emails, we engage in voice conferences, video conferences all through wide area network. Like LAN, a sole body or single organization do not own WAN's. It usually has collective ownership. Above were the two basic and major types of computer networks; however, there are some small types of networks as well. LAN based on Wi-Fi wireless network. This technology is usually used in restaurants, university campuses, hospitals, organizations to provide wireless internet. A device called wireless modem is used to access Wi-Fi Internet. Many of laptops and latest mobiles has this built-in feature to access Wi-Fi. Metropolitan Area Network This is a type of network that is used in cities. Single entity such a government body or large corporations usually use this.
