This is a relatively simple question with, unfortunately, a relatively complicated answer. Whether or not DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) is broadband really depends on how you define "broadband." Different people define the word in different ways for different reasons, and the word itself doesn't have any one single meaning. What Does Broadband Mean? "Broadband" refers to a data transmission method that utilizes a relatively wide (or broad) range (or band) of frequencies divided into separate channels. In simple layman's terms, this basically means that multiple pieces of data are sent simultaneously to increase the speed of the data transfer. A good analogy would be a water hose. Instead of trading in your garden hose for a fireman's hose (which can deliver a higher volume of water because the hose is bigger), you tie a dozen garden hoses together to deliver just as much water as the fireman's hose. In a broadband internet connection, your data transmission line isn't bigger-you just have multiple lines working simultaneously. So Is DSL the Same as Broadband? The confusion over whether or not DSL is the same a broadband comes from the equipment it uses. The average computer user today defines a high-speed internet connection as anything faster than a dial-up telephone modem connection with a data transmission speed of 56 kbps (kilobits per second). A dial-up modem uses a regular telephone line. A DSL modem also uses a regular telephone line. How then, people ask, can DSL possibly be faster than dial-up if it uses the same equipment? The answer is that, even though it is using the same telephone connection as a dial-up modem, DSL uses the telephone line differently. DSL delivers more data to your computer by using several different frequencies (or bands) simultaneously. Your telephone lines, for example, only use the lower frequencies (under 4 kHz) to carry your voice over the line. The higher frequencies, however, remain unused. DSL uses these higher frequencies, subdividing them into several different bands, each of which is capable of transmitting data simultaneously to your computer. Again, think of the garden hose analogy. By the technical definition of broadband data transmission, DSL definitely qualifies as broadband. But Is DSL the Same as Broadband Internet in Terms of Speed?

Whatever the technical electronics definition of "broadband" may be, the average person usually defines broadband as a high-speed internet connection. As we mentioned before, "high-speed" basically just means anything faster than a 56 kbps dial-up modem connection. By this definition, DSL still definitely qualifies as a broadband internet connection. Even the slowest DSL connection256 kbps-is over four and a half times faster than a dial-up connection. The fastest DSL connection-24,000 kbps-is over 428 times faster than dial-up. On the other hand, a more technically-minded person, such as a network engineer setting up a new intranet network in an office building, may define broadband differently, at a much higher rate of data transmission. In this case, a faster (and much more expensive) T-line or fiber optic internet connection would be required. A DSL connection, no matter how fast, just wouldn't be enough. In short, a broadband DSL connection is more than fast enough for a personal network or home office internet connection. For an entire office building, however, a DSL line probably wouldn't qualify as broadband. If you're just an individual looking for a home broadband internet connection for web surfing, internet gaming, or a home-based business, DSL should provide you with all the bandwidth and speed you need at a much more affordable price than industry-level broadband Tlines or fiber optic connections.
