When members of your family seem to require an internet connection every now and then because of some school assignments, research, or just plain and simple email, then it might be really a good idea to install a home network at your location. Having such a system would enable all to be connected to the net and doing their individual stuff simultaneously. However, before you install that system, it might be a good idea to first know its advantages and disadvantages. One clear benefit of a home network system is, naturally, you get to share the single internet connection that you have. With a network, your teenage son may play that online game which he had been hearing for a long time, while your teenage daughter simultaneously surfs the myriads of social network sites on the Internet. At the same time, your spouse can continue to work on that work-at-home business while you also get to do your research online. Another advantage is the relatively affordable cost of a home network. Just try to imagine if each of the four computers at your house has its own internet connection, you would be paying for a service even though the computer that connects to it is off. With a network, you get to pay for only a single service connection though there are four computers that utilize this connection. Sharing files and resources would now be a cinch with a home network system. Need a file that resides on your spouse's PC? With the proper electronic permission, you can always get it without physically going to that particular computer. Your printer finally ran out of ink? No problem. With such a network system, you can always print at your son's printer even if the location of that printer is several feet away. Family time has never been so enjoyable and fun with a network system installed at your location. You and other members of the family can play multi-player or online games during your free time. This makes for a great weekend activity for the whole family. One distinct disadvantage of a network system is that it sometimes slows down your Internet connection. Just imagine if you have a 1 megabyte per second speed and four computers would be using it, that speed would be divided by four which only gives each computer a quarter of the supposed speed. Another disadvantage is that if a member-computer of that home network has a virus, there is a possibility that the same virus will spread on to other computers on the network. A home network system has also its pros and cons. If you plan to install a network at your house, try to determine the benefits that you and your family will get while taking cognizance of any disadvantages. If the benefits outweigh the disadvantages, there is no reason why you should not

get into home networking.
