The thyroid gland is the butterfly-shaped gland that is situated in front of your neck. It is an essential gland of the endocrine system. The thyroid gland is responsible for all the cells consumption and use of energy. It regulates your growth, sexual development and body metabolism. When problems occur in your thyroid, you have chances of developing heart diseases, becoming infertile and obese. You may also get the very rare chance of developing thyroid cancer. Thyroid cancer is an uncommon type of thyroid disease. The causes of the disease are not exactly known by doctors, but it starts with the rapid multiplication of cells in the thyroid gland. However, certain risk factors increase a persons chance of developing the cancer. When you are exposed to these risk factors, you are prone to developing thyroid cancer. The risk factors of this disease are: - Radiation. Exposure to too much radiation increases your risk of developing thyroid cancer. Xrays used to treat enlarged tonsils, head and neck problems, and acne are sources of radiation. - Genetics. Your family history is a risk factor of thyroid cancer. You are more prone to the cancer if there had been cases of thyroid cancer in your family. The condition is called familial medullary thyroid cancer. Histories of goiter in the family also increase your risk of the cancer. - Gender. Females are thrice more likely to develop the cancer than men. - Age and Race. People above the age of forty are more prone to developing the disease and African Americans have a far higher rate of thyroid cancer than other Western countries. There is some evidence that this may be caused by lifestyle/diet issues. It is always best to make sure that you have enough iodine in your diet so that your deficiency of iodine does not lead to a thyroid disease. You should know that the symptoms are not obvious and visible early on, but as the cancer progresses; the symptoms will become more obvious They can include: - A lump formed in front of your neck. Abnormal cells grow and develop lumps in the thyroid gland that enlarges the gland itself. This is the first symptom of thyroid cancer. - Difficulty in speaking with a normal voice. The lump in your gland can cause your voice to be

hoarse. Hoarseness is a symptom of the cancer. - Experiencing a difficulty in swallowing or breathing. Your airway may be blocked by the nodules in your thyroid, making it difficult for you to breathe. - Consistent pain the throat and neck. If you experience any one of the above symptoms, please seek the help of a medical professional to get the best treatment for you.
