Wired vs wireless. The age old question when it comes to technology; especially when installing a surveillance system. For many applications wireless can be a beneficial and a superior way to go; with surveillance installations however, wired still holds the advantage. Depending on your situation we can look at a few benefits and downfalls to each to help make a decision between the two. Wireless Surveillance Technology Benefits 1. Installation is vastly easier with only transmitters and receivers to install, and no wires to run. 2. Better suited for less technologically adept people as it is easier to install and maintain. 3. Works in applications where running a wire would be near impossible. 4. Provides quick mobility and the ability to remove and move your surveillance equipment to a different spot when necessary. Disadvantages 1. Interference can arise due to other wireless equipment such as cordless phones and cell phones. Although interference free devices such as 900MHz and digital signal products are being released. 2. Limited number of cameras can be used in the same frequency range. Limits wireless solutions to smaller applications. 3. Fewer features than wired solutions. 4. Wireless solutions still need power at all ends of the equipment. This means you will still need a power supply or battery to get power to your device, and this almost makes the point of wireless moot. Wired Surveillance Benefits 1. No need to worry about interference as you would with wireless equipment.

2. You can theoretically install and maintain as large and expansive a surveillance system as you want. 3. Direct connection to your DVR and other recording equipment; instead of installing a receiver. 4. A wire can run the power and video signal to and from your camera almost anywhere; where as a wireless solution needs to be rather close to a power source. 5. Wired surveillance equipment generally has more features and capabilities than their wireless counterparts. Disadvantages 1. Installation can be on the tricky side; especially if you want to make it clean and professional looking. You may incur some extra costs having someone install it for you. 2. You have a lack of mobility and ability to quickly adjust and move your equipment around. A quick rule of thumb is that for lower end equipment needs and small applications; a wireless solution is acceptable. For larger applications with multiple cameras and large system requirements; a wired surveillance system will have the advantage.
