Tattersalls' Craven Breeze-Up Sale O
nce again there were no new individual European records at the Newmarket Craven Breeze-Up Sale on Wednesday and Thursday evenings, April 14 and 15, but demand was very strong and Tattersalls were delighted that the average price there was second only to the highest ever, set in 2008. The catalogue this April was noticeably smaller than in 2009, but Tattersalls sold 96 two-year-olds during the two evenings, just 19 fewer than last year. Because of the smaller catalogue, there was a reduction of 10.6% in the turnover to 7,656,000 gns, which was almost a million gns below last April's 8,561,000 gns. However, as a smaller number of horses were sold, there was a welcome increase in the average price, which was the second highest ever and rose by 7.1% to 79,755 gns from last April's 74,443 gns and not too far below the 2008 record of 102,448 gns. The median of 70,000 gns equalled the record set in 2008, rising by 14.3% from last year's 60,000 gns. In spite of that, there were only 4 lots which fetched prices of 200,000 gns or over this April, compared with 6 last year and 16 in 2008. Edmond Mahony, the chairman of Tattersalls, commented "Turnover is down, as expected with a smaller catalogue, but both the average and median have risen, which is a tribute to the quality of the horses and the consignors. The market has been selective at times, but we have seen plenty of international competition at the top and the success of recent graduates has not gone unnoticed. The final figues compare very favourably with last year. The usual pre-election caution has not inspired confidence and, while the weakness of Sterling has definitely helped our overseas buyers, we continue to face challenges on the home front." Three of the four highest prices were for American-bred juveniles and the top was a bay colt by Elusive Quality from Mocklershill who sold for 400,000 gns on the Thursday, a considerable advance on last April's best of 260,000 gns. Earlier in the day, Elusive Quality's son Elusive Pimpernel had won the TATTERSALLS' CRAVEN SALE RESULTS Lots Lots Aggregate Average Offered Sold gns gns 2005 172 124 6,333,000 51,073 2006 175 147 10,736,000 73,034 2007 190 120 8,795,000 73,292 2008 158 116 11,884,000 102,448 2009 163 115 8,561,000 74,443 2010 139 96 7,656,500 79,755
Gr.3 Craven Stakes. Hugo Merry and David Redvers both wanted this colt, but from 300,000 gns onwards it became a duel between owner Andrew Tinkler (standing with Dwayne Woods) and Italian bloodstock agent Federico Barberini. At 400,000 gns, the hammer came down in favour of Barberini, who was representing agent Oliver St Lawrence and Fawzi Nass, a Bahraini who owns the nearby Aislabie Stud. St Lawrence said that the colt has been bought for a Bahraini friend of Fawzi Nass and that he would stay in Britain, though the trainer had not yet been decided. Bought for $150,000 at Keeneland by Willie Browne of Mocklershill, this colt is the first foal of Love Match, who scored five times in the U.S.A., including the Gr.3 Matchmaker Stakes at Monmouth Park, and is half-sister to stakes winner Love That Magic. Although he was the underbidder this time, there was quick compensation for Andrew Tinkler, who is the Chief Executive of the Eddie Stobart freight firm. Only four lots later, his bid of 215,000 gns made by Dwayne Woods was too much for agent Peter Doyle on a son of American sire Speightstown from Norman Williamson's Oak Tree Farm, a $160,000 purchase at Keeneland as a yearling. The colt's dam Affordability is a winning daughter of Unbridled and a half-sister to stakes-placed winner Favorite Times, while the third dam Angel Island won the Gr.2 Alcibiades Stakes at Keeneland and bred nine winners, including Sharrood, a top performer on both sides of the Atlantic, running second in the Gr.1 Arlington Million and third in the Irish 2000 Guineas. Andrew Tinkler and Dwayne Woods had already made their mark on the Wednesday, when they topped the day's trade with their bid of 210,000 gns for a chesnut colt by Shamardal from Kilminfoyle House Stud, outlasting Richard Hannon Jr. This colt is the first produce of Dream Shared, who was placed twice and is a half-sister by Fantastic Light to Into The Dark, winner of listed events at Newmarket and Ayr. Dreams carried off the Gr.2 Flying Childers Stakes at Doncaster and the Gr.3 King George Stakes at Goodwood. These two purchases brought up to 18 the number of 2-year-olds that Tinkler has in training in 2010 with Michael Dods in Co Durham. Last April, Yeomanstown Stud had topped this sale with a colt by Medaglia d'Oro and this formula served them well again this year with the only other juvenile to reach the 200,000 gns mark. They were paid exactly that price by agent John McCormack for a half-brother to six winners out of the Churchill Downs listed victress Western Dreamer, a Gone West mare who was also third in the Gr.1 Spinaway Stakes. Bought for only $90,000 as a yearling, he comes from a strong American family and McCormack had to see off first trainer Jeremy Noseda and then agent Peter Doyle to secure him. Mocklershill had their usual excellent sale, selling three of the top eight lots and receiving 190,000 gns from trainer Paul Cole for a son of Montjeu out of Healing Music, a mare by Bering who won in France and was second in a listed race there; she is a half-sister to Herboriste, a Gr.2 scorer at Calder, and the Gr.1 Hollywood Derby second Fast and Furious. On the previous day, Tom Goff of Blandford Bloodstock had paid them another 180,000 gns, outlasting French trainer John Hammond for the only yearling in the catalogue by the German champion sire Monsun, a half-brother to the listed-placed winner Foolish Ambition. Their dam Foolish Act is a half-sister by Sadler's Wells to Goodwood Gr.3 heroine Circle of Gold and to the dam of the St Leger star Rule of Law, while the third dam is the Irish 1000 Guineas victress Favoletta. Two other 2-year-olds each sold for 180,000 gns, first Malcolm Bastard's grey colt by Azamour out of Viva Maria, a winning sister to the speedy French filly Welcome Millenium and half-sister to two other listed scorers; this half-brother to two winners was bought by Turkish owner-breeder Ibrahim Araci, for whom he will be trained at Newmarket by Ed Dunlop. Last year Brendan Holland of Grove Stud paid 57,000 gns at Newmarket for a son of Shamardal out of the young Silver Hawk mare Love In The Mist and he now received 180,000 gns for him from agent Richard Frisby, who outlasted Katsohito Hirai of Eishin Farm in Japan. Love In The Mist is a half-sister to six winners including the Gr.3 Curragh Stakes victor Raphane, while the next dam is a sister to Caline, a Gr.1 winner at Santa Anita.

Tattersalls' Guineas Breeze-Up Sale here were not many real highlights when T Tattersalls held the fourth edition of their Guineas Breeze-Up Sale at Newmarket on April 30, the day before the race meeting which features the 2000 Guineas and the 1000 Guineas. Though the turnover was some way below last year, it was slightly larger than in the inaugural year of 2007, but the average was lower than in any of the three preceding years. All of the 146 candidates were required to breeze up on the Rowley Mile racecourse on the Thursday, the day before the sale. Nothing could approach the individual record of 470,000 gns set in 2008 and there were only two 2-year-olds who managed to reach six-figure prices, five less than 12 months ago. Trade was at a somewhat disappointing level, with only 83 of the 131 juveniles which appeared in the Park Paddocks sale ring managing to find buyers, though at least that was a better percentage than in any previous year. At the end of the day, those 83 had aggregated 2,149,500 gns, a drop of 23.8% from last year's 2,819,200 gns, while the average was 32.0% lower at 25,898 gns than the 38,097 gns of 2009. The median slipped back from 25,000 gns to 20,000 gns.
The comment from Tattersalls chairman Edmond Mahony was "There have been a number of positives to take from today's trade. As well as a top price which exceeded the 170,000 gns sale topper at last year's Guineas Breeze-Up, we were pleased that the clearance rate also significantly improved on last year." In 2009, three of the top five lots had been knocked down to agent Richard O'Gorman and he snapped up both the six-figure breezers this year. It was presumed that these purchases were made on behalf of Godolphin, as he is often their representative at these sales and also because both of the top two colts are sons of Invincible Spirit, whose son Vale of York won the Breeders' Cup Juvenile for Godolphin last autumn. The sales topper had been catalogued for the Craven Breeze-Up Sale two weeks earlier, but had to be withdrawn because of a slight injury sustained when leaving a van after his visit to the Rowley Mile and was now supplemented to the Guineas Sale as Lot 73A. Offered by Willie Slattery of Meadowview Stables in Co Tipperary, who had bought this Invincible Spirit colt for only 48,000 Euros at Goffs' Orby Sale, he was keenly sought by Andrew Tinkler and then

David Redvers, who offered 215,000 gns, but Richard O'Gorman then had the last word at 220,000 gns. This colt is out of the Canadian-bred Margaree Mary, a listedplaced winner by Seeking the Gold, who has also produced his full-brother Stevie Gee, winner of five races including the listed Champion Trophy at Ripon. The next dam is own-sister to champion Dark Lomond, who scored in the Gr.1 Irish St Leger, and is out of that wonderful broodmare Arkadina. Richard O'Gorman was in action again an hour later, paying exactly 100,000 gns to Thomas Whitehead of Powerstown Stud in Co Kilkenny for his half-brother by Invincible Spirit to four winners, among them Metaphoric, whose six wins include the listed Fenwolf Stakes at Ascot. The dam Virgin Hawk was placed in the U.S.A. and is a half-sister by Silver Hawk to Santa Anita stakes victress Island Jamboree, the dam of dual California Gr.1 heroine Fiji and also of Capri, who scored in the Gr.2 Grand Prix de Chantilly. This was another Orby Sale purchase at 46,000 Euros. Two American-bred colts took third and fourth places on the list, first Friarstown Stud's half-brother by Street Cry to Honolua Storm, winner of the Gr.3 Eclipse Handicap at Woodbine, out of a half-sister by Storm Bird to three stakes winners, from the family of Triple Crown hero Affirmed. He was bought for 76,000 gns by agent Bobby O'Ryan and will be trained by Ken Condon for Iona Bloodstock. Then Bobby's brother Robin, assistant to trainer Richard Fahey, spent 75,000 gns to secure Lynn Lodge Stud's colt by Mr Greeley from the family of champion Afleet Alex and he will join that Malton yard.
Tattersalls' July Sale T
here was a new individual price record of 460,000 gns at the Newmarket July Sale conducted by Tattersalls, which increased to four days from Tuesday to Friday, July 6-9. The turnover was larger than in 2009 but, despite the record price, the average was slightly down. The catalogue was considerably larger than last year, containing 816 entries instead of 732, but the 475 horses sold were only 37 more than last July's 438 lots. The turnover rose by almost 300,000 gns to 5,835,000 gns, an improvement of 5.2% from last year's 5,546,700 gns, but was still less than half of the 2006 best of 12,188,100 gns. However, because of the extra lots sold, there was a drop in the average price, though at 12,284 gns it was only 3.0% worse than last July's 12,664 gns. This was even further below the 2006 record of 19,564 gns and the median dropped to 6,000 gns from last July's 6,500 gns. One encouraging aspect of the July Sale was that
the 120 unsold lots were a few less than the 122 in 2008, with 79.8% of those offered finding buyers. The new record came on Thursday evening, when owner-breeder Paul Makin offered his 3year-old colt Business As Usual, trained by Michael Jarvis at Kremlin House Stables in Newmarket. Lightly raced and very good looking, Business As Usual had won two of his four starts, most recently a mile handicap at Newmarket at the end of May, in which he had defeated Ransom Note, subsequently the winner of the Britannia Handicap at Royal Ascot. Bidding started at 50,000 gns, but by 250,000 David Redvers and Anthony Stroud had both joined in, with Alastair Donald of Kern/Lillingston entering the fray at 360,000 gns. Redvers dropped out at 420,000 gns, the opening bid by Qatar trainer Ibrahim Al-Malki, who went on to 450,000, but had no answer when Donald offered a new July Sale highest of 460,000 gns.

Vendor Paul Makin lives in Hong Kong, so he will continue to watch the progress of Business As Usual, who goes to be trained there by John Moore and will probably be aimed at the Hong Kong Derby in March 2011. Business As Usual is a son of Invincible Spirit out of the Irish River mare Lesgor, a Groupplaced winner in France who has bred two other winners. The next dam Let's Sgor was the champion filly in New Zealand. Four other lots made six-figure prices, including two offered by Darley on the opening Tuesday, when the broodmares and fillies out of training are sold. They received 115,000 gns from agent Amanda Skiffington for their unraced 3-year-old filly Flag Day, a daughter of Pivotal and European champion juvenile filly Blue Duster, and she will go to John Deer's Oakgrove Stud. A little earlier, Charlie Gordon-Watson had paid 110,000 gns to secure the 4-year-old Cross Section, a half-sister by Cape Cross to listed winners Il Warrd and Coy, who was placed four times and had been covered in March by Dubawi. Her dam is a half-sister to the fine sprinter Diffident. Cross Section was bought for American breeder Bill McAlpin, who has horses in training with Luca Cumani. A couple of smart 2-year-olds dominated the trade on the Wednesday, when the Pastoral Pursuits colt Drawing Board, who had scored in his first two starts, was purchased at 115,000 gns by Bahrainis Ramzi Hassan and Jalil Al Mallah; his future racing will be in Qatar.
