HISTORY’S BIGGEST CRIMES ALL THE GORY DETAILS

WELCOME TO BLOODY SCOTLAND 2017! We are delighted to announce the programme for our sixth festival in historic Stirling, featuring a truly international line-up of some of the biggest and most exciting names in crime fiction.

politician Vince Cable and deputy chief constable of Scotland, Iain Livingstone.

The weekend kicks off in the grandest style with a gala opening in the Great Hall of Stirling Castle with the launch of a Bloody Scotland short story anthology, the award of the McIlvanney Prize and a stunning torchlight procession from the castle to the Albert Halls. It is, of course, a castle fit for royalty and luckily, we have just that in Ian Rankin and Val McDermid, the king and queen of Scottish crime, who both celebrate 30 year anniversaries with special events.

There is a quiz, a play, forensics, the Scotland-England crime writers football match, a late-night gig from the Fun Lovin’ Crime Writers, a live podcast and Crime at the Coo. There continues to be a discount for local residents, tickets for the unemployed and this year we have improved disabled access and are providing a mini-bus between venues for those that need it. On the subject of venues, we are delighted to add Allan Park South Church hall as a new venue. Located at 41 Dumbarton Rd, Stirling FK8 2LQ and only a very short walk from the Albert Halls.

Other leading authors on the programme include the fabulous Lynda LaPlante, Chris Brookmyre, Peter May, Karen Rose, Mark Billingham, Chris Carter and Ann Cleeves. There are also familiar names such as actor Douglas Henshall,

The festival could not happen without its sponsors, most notably Bookdonors, Creative Scotland, Stirling Council and most recently Stirling Gin. Our thanks to them but most of all to you, the reading public. This is your festival.

CRIME IN THE SPOTLIGHT Bloody Scotland is continuing its drive to support new authors by letting them share a stage with the biggest names in the business. Before the Albert Halls events, emerging writers will have the chance to read from their work. Spotlight authors have gone on to great things, not least Graeme Macrae Burnet who ‘opened’ for Ian Rankin before being shortlisted for the 2016 Man Booker Prize. This year the Spotlight prior to the Val McDermid event will be used to announce the winner of the New Female Crime Writer Award launched by Virago in association with The Pool. Sponsored by The Open University Scotland

Thirty years.

ONE LEGENDARY DETECTIVE. As a Social Enterprise, with a strong ethical focus, Bookdonors is delighted to be able to support the excellent work of Bloody Scotland. We wholeheartedly endorse their initiatives to widen public access, and to support emerging and established authors alike.

Ian Rankin

Ian Rankin will be interviewed about 30 years of John Rebus, by Mark Billingham, at 20.45 on Friday 8th September.

Bookdonors trades on-line in used books for the benefit of people, charities and the environment with 100% of sales used to fulfil our social missions. Each month we collect over 600,000 used books from Charity Shops across Scotland. Reusing these books means each year we divert over 2,000 tonnes of books from landfill. In turn that allows us to employ 32 people, many of whom might otherwise be excluded from the job market.

We hope you enjoy the free books we are distributing. If, however, you have already read the book, please come to our stand and we will gladly swap it for any title that takes your fancy. Whilst you are there we encourage you to speak to some of our staff that are assisting at the festival this weekend, to hear their individual stories too. Building Plots: Bloody Scotland Louise Welsh, Doug Johnstone and E.S. Thomson

SUN 10TH // 12.45PM—1.45PM // GOLDEN LION BALLROOM // £8 / £7

SUN 10TH // 12.45PM—1.45PM // ALBERT HALLS // £10 / £9 Twelve of Scotland’s best crime writers have produced an anthology of short stories inspired by the country’s most iconic sites and structures. Compiled by Historic Environment Scotland, these include the Forth Rail Bridge, Maeshowe on Orkney, Bothwell Castle and St Peter’s Seminary at Cardross. Three of the anthology’s authors, Louise Welsh, Doug Johnstone and E.S. Thomson, will talk about their chosen location and the connections that exist between Scotland’s people and places.

Join two gifted storytellers at the very top of their game as they explore connections both Celtic and criminal. The latest from Scotland’s Denise Mina, The Long Drop, is an extraordinary and unsettling account of the meeting between murderer Peter Manuel and the father of the family he has slaughtered. Both of Irish author Liz Nugent’s first two novels, Unravelling Oliver and Lying in Wait, have been number one bestsellers.
